Foul play not suspected in student death On Sunday, February 3rd at 8:35 in the morning the Cranbrook RCMP responded to a call from EMS advising of an unconscious male
behind the Baker Street mall. When the officer arrived, the male was already in the ambulance and being transported to the East Kootenay
Regional Hospital. The person who reported the incident told police that he has been walking behind the Baker Street mall and came upon the young man who was laying on the ground. When he couldn’t wake him, he called 911 and covered him with a blan-
ket. Police were subsequently advised that the man died later in the morning. The young man was determined to be 19-year-old international student Conrad Antonio, who was attending the College of The Rockies. The RCMP in
assistance to the Office of the Coroner, have investigated the death and foul play is not suspected. The Cranbrook RCMP continue to assist the Coroners Office with their investigation and are asking for anyone who may have seen Con-
rad between Saturday, February 2nd and Sunday, February 3rd, 2013, to call the Cranbrook RCMP at 250-489-3471 or the Coroners office at 1-888-991-2111.

mitted $200,000 per year for the next three years to the Elk Valley Community Directed Funds (EVCDF) Program to support initiatives that provide socioeconomic benefits to the Elk Valley. The EVCDF Committee, which will oversee the Program, is made up of Regional District of East Kootenay Elk Valley Directors Lois Halko, Dean McKerracher, Mike Sosnowski and Chair Mary Giuliano along with community members Dan Savage, Michael Hepher, Troy Tobin, and John Baher. “We held our first meeting earlier this month and one of our first steps was to authorize the preparation of a Request for Proposal to prepare the Elk Valley Community Priorities Plan,” explains EVCDF Chair Giuliano. Once a consultant is hired, community consultation will be a key component in the research and development of the Priorities Plan, which will identify the priorities of the Valley and outline criteria to assist in selecting or developing projects. “What makes this Program unique is that is aimed at valley-wide projects as opposed to community specific ones and I believe this gives us a wonderful opportunity to work collaboratively toward common goals for the Valley as a whole,” adds Giuliano. The EVCDF Program is the second program of its type in the East Kootenay. The Columbia Valley Community Directed Funds Program was initiated in 2012 and CBT President and CEO Neil Muth says, “We’ve been talking over the years about ways to support communities to make their own decisions about using CBT money to fund the priorities they have set. This is a new way to support people across a number of community boundaries to work together to shape their future.” The EVCDF Committee is a standing committee of the Regional District of East Kootenay. The RDEK administers and operates the Elk Valley Community Directed Funds Program in accordance with the Contribution Agreement between Columbia Basin Trust and the RDEK. For more information on the Program or the Committee, contact Committee Chair Mary Giuliano at 250-4232233 or by email mary. giuliano@fernie.ca.

Carolin Hockley, Captain of the Wal-Mart 3183 MSP Team presents a cheque for $1,200 to Joeleen Mann, RN with help from Laura & Oliver Cardwell, Jen Gregory, Donna Grainger (EKFH) and Richard Webb.
Plan aids Toy Closet Wal-mart Canada has recently initiated a new associates program entitled My Sustainability Plan (MSP) through its stores across Canada with a focus on reducing waste and energy and to drive the growth and availability of sustainable products and choices. The plan is based on three pillars – my planet, my health and my life. Each Wal-Mart store has a MSP captain, Carolin Hockley, along with the members of the Cranbrook MSP team, also set some personal goals and sustainable initiatives which included recycling, eating healthy, quitting smoking and more. The 383 Cranbrook team made up of Carolin, Brad, Deb, Richard, Shelley, Judi-Lynn, Sharita and Sandy decided to focus on eating healthy and also decided to include a component of raising money for the East Kootenay Regional Hospital’s Pediatric Toy Closet. The MSP team hosted an in-house Build a Salad event. Wal-mart associates made a $4 donation for “all you can eat” salad and also had a chance to put in an entry to win a surprise bag of sustainable items valued at $50 - $70. The event raised $600 for the toy closet. Wal-mart Canada made a matching grant resulting in a contribution of $1,200 in funds and an additional four boxes filled to the brim of stuffies, stickers, bubbles and assorted toys. Toys in the toys closet are given to kids to take home after a stay at the hospital. The items are new and the closet offers something for every age from 1-18 years. The pediatric nursing team monitors the closet and utilizes the funds to upgrade items as and when

3 Facts you need to Know About...
The Importance of Creative Thinking... 1. On January 30th at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Minister Bill Bennett announced “Creative Futures”. The program will focus on opportunities for youth across all of BC to engage in arts and encourage creative thinking. 2. The new program will fund six new programs: youth attendance at events featuring professional artists; after school sports & arts activities; bringing artists into schools; student co-op working arts opportunities; scholarship opportunities; artists in classrooms. 3. The $6.25 million new funding raises overall arts funding to the highest level EVER in BC. The creative industries in BC generate $4 billion in activity and employ ten’s of thousands of British Columbians. Economies with a strong component of creativity are successful economies. This is an investment in BC’s future.
Tips to treat knee injuries Sore knees are a common complaint for British Columbians of all ages. Sore knees are often caused by a sudden injury, like a twisting motion that can tear the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), but can also occur through routine overuse. BC’s physiotherapists want to share their Physio-4 for knee injury, 4 tips on how to treat knees, to keep British Columbians moving for life. “The knee joint is made up of bone, cartilage, ligaments and fluid. Muscles and tendons help the knee joint move, so when any of these structures are injured, there will be knee problems and that will result in pain and difficulty moving,” says Suzanne Thompson of Kootenay Therapy Center. “If you have pain in your knee either from overuse or through a sudden injury, your physiotherapist can work with you to minimize long-term damage and help you to heal faster.” 1. Correct muscular imbalances. Most overuse injuries of the knee develop gradually due to muscular imbalances and poor movement patterns. Your physiotherapist can show you corrective exercises to address the muscle imbalances and improve the way you move. 2. Strengthen your hips. Strengthening your hips and improving core muscle strength will reduce the risk of adversely loading your knee joints. Stretching the muscles that attach into your hips/knees/ankles will also minimize compression of these joints. Your physiotherapist can show you how. 3. Protect your joints. If you have any degenerative changes in your knees (eg osteoarthritis) your physiotherapist can show you how to protect your joints during activities of daily living, prescribe exercises to improve the strength of supporting muscles, advise you on safe forms of exercise, and assess your footwear. 4. Correct movement patterns. Poor movement patterns during sports (eg incorrect landings during jumping) greatly increase the risk of traumatic knee injuries. Your physiotherapist can teach you how to move properly and minimize this risk. The Physiotherapy Association of BC created the Pysio-4 to share the expertise of its members with fellow British Columbians. Each month, on movingforlife.ca 4 tips are provided to treat specific health or physical conditions that will help keep British Columbians moving for life. BC’s physiotherapists want British Columbians to know that if they are injured or in pain, a physiotherapist can help. After all, they are the healthcare professionals physicians recommend most. To learn more about how physiotherapists keep British Columbians moving for life, visit movingforlife.ca Physiotherapists are the rehabilitation specialists recommended most by physicians. They are university-educated health professionals who work with patients of all ages to diagnose and treat virtually any mobility issue. Physiotherapists provide care for orthopedic issues such as sport and workplace injuries, as well as cardiorespiratory and neurological conditions. AS Canada’s most physically active health professionals, BCs physiotherapists know how to keep British Columbians moving for life.

Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to fill all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. Five Year Financial Plan Bylaw
Within Council’s policy direction and key objectives, the Budget process is guided by the Finance and Computer Services Department and spans eight City departments. Each department is responsible for overseeing a multitude of programs that keep City operations running smoothly. Once the City’s Senior Management team completes their review following both the policy direction and priorities of Council, the Budget is presented to Council and the public in a series of open budget meetings. Council debates the issues presented and directs Administration on final Budget decisions. The process begins in early fall of each year and wraps up in March or early April of each year, when Council adopts the Financial Plan Bylaw. Visit our website and click on ‘Bylaws’ for more on all of our City bylaws.

Is tax software worth it? Are you thinking about buying an income tax software program to help you complete your next tax return? Before making a decision, you might want to consider something: they are indeed much easier to use than the printed forms, but they are still only recommended for individuals who have simple tax profiles, such as having only one source of income. Tax software is great for simple returns, but never hesitate to use a professional when in doubt. accounting or computer experience. The interfaces are user-friendly and reliable instructions and advice are provided for each step. At the start of the process you will be asked to reply to a questionnaire that will determine your profile. Any credits or deductions you have a right to will be determined by this questionnaire and will be taken into account when you reach the appropriate section, depending on your situation. Several income tax software programs are available in stores, although they all work in much the same way. Which one is the best? It’s really a matter of taste. While some programs use icons to
improve the interface and show your progress, others rely on checklists. You can ask for help at any time. A representative from customer service at the company who produced your chosen software program will talk to you directly if you have any questions regarding the program itself. For questions regarding your particular tax return, you will usually be referred to the appropriate provincial body or the Canada Revenue Agency. However, care should always be taken on tax returns and you shouldn’t hesitate to consult a professional tax specialist when in doubt. Valentine’s Day on February 14 gives us an opportunity to show our spouses, family and friends how much they mean to us. Often we look at giving small presents as a token of our affection, but there is the question of what to give. Chocolates or a bouquet of roses? They only last until they are eaten or the blossoms fade away. If you want to make a more lasting impression, give your loved one a splash of colour to brighten the dark winter days in the form of a flowering plant. There are many popular choices for all the special people in your life. Roses might be the ultimate symbol of love and beauty. In the miniature form, roses can give people years of pleasure. As an indoor plant, they need some extra care – namely enough water and several hours of direct sunlight every day. They can also be transferred into your garden. Everything about these roses is smaller, from the foliage to the flowers. They are actually bred to grow into compact plants with equally small flowers. If you want to keep the mini rose indoors, but it has outgrown its tiny pot, then all you need to do is repot it into a larger container with sterilized potting soil. Be careful not to disturb the roots too much when repotting. Once repotted, the rose will first be busy growing new roots, but within a month or so, you should start to notice new growth appearing. At that point you can begin fertilizing your mini rose to encourage more growth or even flowering. Planting your mini roses outside in the garden, may be the most environmentally friendly thing to do with your Valentine’s Day gift. Choose a sunny, well drained location for your plant. Roses prefer areas that have good air-flow, and while they can be subject to a few bugs and diseases, these can usually be treated fairly easily. If you are planting multiple mini roses, please remember to space them about 12 inches apart to allow airflow and sufficient room to grow. Ensure that no other plants you place near the mini roses crowd or shade the mini roses. Mini roses planted in the ground also need a regular watering and fertilizing program in order to maximize the blooms. They prefer fertilizer in early spring, when they start to bloom, and again at the peak of their bloom. Roses like to be fed regularly, but stop fertilizing the mini roses in the garden when you cease fertilizing your other perennials, as they too need time to shut down for winter dormancy. Adding some mulch around the rose in order to help it with protection for the winter is also strongly recommended. If you are looking for a fun plant for a special person that spells out friendship and happiness, there are many options as well. There is the primula, one of the first messengers of spring, that comes in many vibrant colours. Gerbera daisies also come in many bright colours and their large heads closely resemble those of sunflowers. African violets, with their clusters of blossoms, speak of a delicate and innocent love. Traditionally their blooms come in varieties of purple, but over time, crossbreeds have resulted in white, pink and even yellow flowers. This plant is easy to multiply and share and thrives indoors. With their blooms in hues of red, pink, orange and white, hibiscus flowers have been a popular symbol since the Victorian era - then and now, the flower speaks of delicate beauty. Orchids symbolize luxury, beauty and strength and with their abundance of blooms, this exotic looking plant is sure to warm every heart. So send a floral message to those you love and make their day with the gift that keeps on growing. Till next time... happy Valentine’s Day! Submitted by Tara

Experience as a Family ■ Try something new this Family Day. It might be as simple as agreeing that everyone observe a no-technology or TV day. If you find your gatherings often involve all the adults sitting around visiting while the youngsters play among themselves and the teens segregate away from both you and the little ones, you’re probably not alone. A family gathering can be a wonderful opportunity for family to hear the latest on jobs, trips, hobbies and health, but if you find your gatherings following the same tedious patterns where one or two family members dominate with the same old stories, this is the year to change it up. Consider adding new experiences to the plans, and making a new and fun tradition out of them. Here are some ideas to get started: Get out and enjoy our beautiful outdoors – no matter what your weather. If you live in a snowy region of B.C., organize a hayride, snowshoe trek, sledding time or ice skating at a community rink. If you don’t have snow in your area, you can travel to find it or consider planning a bike ride, a hike or even hitting a minigolf course or a driving range. The idea is to bring everyone together in a family activity you’ve never done before.
restaurant. Not only do you experience a new menu together but everyone in your group can sit together and enjoy the meal. B.C. has a widely diverse cultural make up and ethnic restaurants are part of that. Make your Family Day gathering a retreat for all – consider getting your family out of the house and turn your gathering into a festive retreat. Many venues have activities for all ages to enjoy, from winter outdoor fun to refreshing spa services. Think of how much fun it would be for your whole family group to take a yoga class together. Host a family talent show – Everyone has a special talent in your family, so encourage them to bring their talent to your gathering. If you’re really ambitious set up an area to be used as a stage and arrange chairs for audience members. Many living rooms have dimmer switches so play with lighting and lamps so the performance area is in the spotlight. You might want to rent a popcorn machine or ask family members to bring along some treats and snacks. By bringing new activities to your family gathering this year, you’ll be creating many new memories to share in the future, as well as making the event much more enjoyable.
Plan a meal away from the house – Instead of cooking for the gathering, plan a formal brunch or dinner at a new
FAMILY DAY 2013
Play together ■ There is nothing like the fun and innocence of childhood. Whether it’s a game of kick-thecan with the neighbourhood children or building a tree fort in the backyard, some of our best memories are playful. Board games are a great indoor activity, and Family Day is a great time to dig out some of your old favourites like Monopoly and Clue, and maybe try out a few new ones that are geared towards family fun. Your local toy store will have a wide range of options, along with other family-friendly entertainment such as puzzles and books. Set up a card table, get your favourite puzzle out and spend hours putting together the pieces. Finishing a complicated puzzle will also give your kids a sense of accomplishment. If you’re looking for something a bit more high-tech, your game console or computer is a good place to start. Video games have come a long way from the classic Super Mario and Donkey Kong, and you may discover that your kids have a much larger technical knowledge than you do. They might beat you at Wii Sports but it will make for a
great story! Getting outside for a game of tag or basketball will check off two things on your list: play and exercise. Taking a trip to a local playground or field will give you hours of entertainment for a low cost. Pack a picnic as well for an entire day of fun. Practicing your batting or pitching will also get you ready for the upcoming sports seasons, or maybe compete to see who can run the fastest to the swings. This year, Family Day is a time to make memories, spend time together and maybe learn a thing or two. Whatever the weather is like outside, you have plenty of options for having fun at all ages.

FAMILY DAY 2013
Create together ■ One of my favourite memories was creating an enormous piñata in preparation for a multi-family holiday. We blew up a huge bouncy ball and covered it with papier mache. Our children and those of our friends were young so after my young sons painted the ball white, I drew a score of cartoon characters, shapes and funny animals all around it. Filled with age-appropriate, small toys, puzzles and treats, the big white ball became a major activity for everyone in our three-family group. Every age took turns colouring in the shapes through-out the day, knowing when it was completed the ball would be strung up. The anticipation and excitement was heightened because the reward came with activity and was not immediate. Creating something as a family can mark an important time in your family history. It captures the age and ability of your children, your interests and a point in time. By working together on a project your family can develop new skills, collaborate on something truly memorable and enjoy what each family member brings to the endeavor. Think about all the things a family
could create together – a family album complete with stories, mementos and funny or poignant memories. Your family might be old enough to handle something more ambitious like preparing a garden, building a dog house or designing and painting a family recreation area in your home. Technology puts an amazing array of tools in the hands of today’s families. You can plan, write, film and edit a movie with your everyday computer and smartphone technology and software. Even more fun is sharing your family creation with friends around the world. You might even suggest a film festival by inviting families to create their own film and have a “popcorn premiere” to show them all. Searching online will uncover an astounding number of crafts and projects you could tackle as a family. It can be as simple as building and flying a kite. Or you may look for something you can recycle or re-purpose into a creative new item – whether a work of art or function. It’s bound to make your family members proud environment stewards as well as treasuring your time and project as a family.

Share together ■ Bringing together your extended family can create a highly memorable and valuable life event. They say “it takes a village to raise a child” and many would agree especially in today’s world of working parents and latch-key kids. The support, experience and interest of your extended family can have a significant impact on your immediate family. Regardless of your definition of ‘extended’ family, bringing together those with whom you share history with can have lasting benefits not just for you and your children but for those you invite to share your day. It is common in today’s world to have older children in nuclear families reach their teens before meeting extended family members. Geographical isolation is common for middle-class families who move based on occupational opportunities while family branches retain their independence. Family Day is the ideal occasion to hold family reunions to re-establish and integrate a stronger family connection. This allows your children to connect with extended family members and to share a better sense of their heritage and belonging. Don’t forget to include senior members of your family. Family reunions and relationships inspire seniors to stay active and pursue their well-being. Studies have found seniors feel revitalized when they spend time with families. Your children will benefit from hearing their oral history and that’s an inspiring experience that won’t always be available to them. Another way to celebrate Family Day is to gather your extended family and friends around something you care about. It might be a shore clean-up, a family walk or a garage sale. You might volunteer at a foodbank. Food is often central to gatherings and with everyone contributing to a family meal afterwards, it becomes a great way to share B.C.’s first Family Day.
