Tax credit for first-time home buyers
Clever Cooks
Kamloops-Thompson-Cariboo MP Cathy McLeod reminds everyone buying their first home to take advantage of the First-Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit, which helps make the transition into home ownership more affordable. First-time home buyers can face additional expenses, such as legal fees, land transfer taxes, and other costs involved in buying a family home. To help make this dream a reality, McLeod says the federal government created the First-Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit to support families as they make the leap into home ownership. “If you or your spouse or comCATHY mon-law partner MCLEOD bought your first home this year, you can claim an amount of $5,000 on your income tax and benefit return. The amount only applies if you did not live in another home owned by you or your spouse or common-law partner in the year of acquisition or in any of the four preceding years. “Equally important, if you or a person related to you is eligible for the Disability Tax Credit, you can claim the credit even if you are not a first-time home buyer, as long as you are purchasing a house that is more accessible or better suitedpurchase to the your of GE Café major appliances*. needs of the person with a disability.” In its first two years alone, more than 550,000 Canadians claimed the First-Time Home Buyers’ Tax Credit, which resulted in more than $2.5 billion claimed. Skiing followed by high tea
Arlene Jongbloets Free Press
100 Mile Nordics Society is hosting a special afternoon of skiing at the 99 Mile Ski Trails, Feb. 11. Skiing will be followed by a high tea at the day lodge and it’s just for women.
The ladies can hit the trails at 1 p.m. and ski as far and as long as they wish. People should bring their own skis, but the lodge does have a limited supply of rental equipment. The cost to join in on the fun is a cash donation for the 100 Mile House & District Women’s
Centre Society. The event is open to all women with all levels of experience, including Nordics members and non-members. Coaches will be on hand to help and offer tips. For more information, contact Lauren at 250-791-7291 or e-mail her at brucelauren@ shaw.ca.
Nominations sought for volunteer awards K a m l o o p s T h omp s on - C ar i b o o MP Cathy McLeod suggests all of her constituents show their appreciation for extraordinary volunteers in their communities by nominating them for a Prime Minister’s Volunteer Award. A total of 17 awards are given at both the regional and national level. The regional component recognizes individual volunteers or groups of volunteers,
businesses and not-forprofit organizations. The national component is divided into two categories: one for lifelong achievement and one for new volunteers. Award recipients will be recognized at an award ceremony and can identify an eligible not-for-profit organization to receive a grant for $5,000 (regional award) or $10,000 (national award). However, to receive an award, poten-

Ottawa hands reserve authority to B.C. By Tom Fletcher Black Press
British Columbia’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) project is to be built on Haisla Nation reserve land, and now the province will be able to regulate its industrial and environmental terms. Federal Aboriginal Affairs Minister John Duncan announced new regulations on Jan. 22 to replace federal authority on reserve lands with B.C. regulation. That means the B.C. Oil and Gas
Commission can regulate the project, proposed by Apache Canada and Chevron Canada on Douglas Channel near Kitimat. “This has been a long process, but everyone’s delighted,” Duncan said in an interview from Vancouver after the announcement. “There have been no delays to the actual project because they’ve been operating under some interim agreements with the province in terms of permitting.” The B.C. Without such changes, provincial building codes and environmental laws for burning, emissions and water and land use do not apply to reserves. Government and industry engage on world-leading spill plan Thirteen key stakeholder organizations, including representatives from the railway, petroleum, transportation and business sectors, are met faceto-face on Jan. 22 to begin building what will become a madein-British Columbia, world-leading spill response plan. Foundational to the discussion will be the provincial government’s recently released policy intentions paper (www. e n v. g o v. b c . c a / e p d / codes/spr_eep/response. htm), which outlines how government will work with industry to establish the spill response regime that deals with all hazardous materials spills that may occur on land in B.C. The Jan. 22 meeting was the first of several discussions between government and industry to lay the groundwork for future policy development. The Ministry of Environment receives approximately 3,500 notifications of environmental emergencies per year; this includes oiltank leaks, home-based oil spills, overturned tanker trucks, oil and fuel spills on water, rail accidents and chemical spills. While approximately 90 per cent of these are considered minor, the projected increase in the movement of hazardous materials throughout B.C. necessitates a wellco-ordinated response and preparedness plan. Environment Minister Terry Lake says the intentions paper highlights the need for policy change in support of a full polluter-pay system where
the costs associated with a spill rests with business and industry and not taxpayers. Among the topics discussed will be spill management in neighbouring coastal jurisdictions that include key concepts, such as industry funding into government program budgets and spill response funds, increased emergency-response staff and membership in a collective spill-response organization. Representatives from each of the 13 stakeholder organizations will then be given an opportunity to give direct input on the content of the paper to government. They include the

The industry organizations represent the sectors responsible for the transportation, storage, and use of significant volumes of hazardous materials,
which present risk to public safety and the environment should a spill occur. Engagement and discussion on the intentions paper will continue between ministry staff and industry representatives. Comments received in these meetings, as well as through the web-based consultations, will be
summarized and posted on the ministry’s website. A land-based spill prevention and response symposium is planned for March 25-27 in Vancouver, where spillresponse experts from around the world will give presentations and discuss best practices to build and shape B.C.’s policy going forward.

War Amps marks 95 years and 1.5 million keys returned to owners
The annual key tag mailing to British Columbia residents is now underway by The War Amps, which has recently achieved two significant milestones – its 95th anniversary and 1.5 million sets of keys returned to Canadians. The theme of this year’s mailing, “There from the Start” touches on how the association was there for returning First World War amputees in 1918, and has continued to serve amputees across the generations up to the present day. Public support of The War Amps key tag service allows the association
to continue to be there from the start. Key tags protect any keys, not just car keys, and are more vital than ever with the extremely high replacement cost of keys and remote devices. Each key tag has a confidentially coded number. Should the keys be lost, the finder need only call the tollfree number on the back of the tag, or deposit them in any mailbox, and the keys will be returned to the owner by bonded courier. The War Amps receives no government grants. For more information, or to order key tags, call toll-free 1-800-250-3030 or visit waramps.ca.

Central GM Novice hockey team players Miriah, left, and Trey Pacheco participated in Sonic Cram event held by Central GM on Feb. 2. All six teams that attempted the challenge to “cram” 15 teammates and a coach into a small car won three free pizzas.
Central GM crams in a Sonic event Central GM sponsored a Sonic Cram event for all teams in the Novice house hockey tournament in 100 Mile House on Feb. 2. Central GM sales manager Mike Cole says teams were invited to go to the dealership after their games to bring along one coach and their hockey gear (except skates and sticks). Each participating team won a pizza party for attempting to “cram” 15 of its hockey players into a Chevrolet Sonic – each of them fully dressed in their hockey gear – along with the coach and a gear bag. It was all a lot of fun for the teams and for the spectators, Cole says, adding the staff had a great time, too. “The team had three minutes to complete the task, and with loud music playing and parents cheering, it is an energy-bursting experience.” While all six teams were winners and received a certificate to enjoy three, free large pizzas for their efforts, the team with the most players squished into the small car is from

100 Mile House. The Canadian 2 for 1 team outperformed the rest when it “crammed” 17 players, two coaches and a team manager (20 people) into the Sonic. Other local hockey teams participating in the Sonic Cram included 100 Mile Central GM and 100 Mile Invis, competing with visiting Novice teams from Lac la Hache, Lillooet and Quesnel. Cole adds he chose Canadian 2 for 1 Pizza when purchasing the certificates because it is a fellow sponsor that supports minor hockey in 100 Mile House.

Family Day!
10
Celebrate BC’s first Family Day Monday Feb 11 Eat together ■ Family Day is the ideal time to bring your family
‘back to the table’. Given the increasingly busy schedule of every member of the family, eating together has been a casualty of our hectic days. Whether you’re together in your home, on a minivacation or enjoying a local restaurant, there are numerous benefits to eating together. Sharing a table means sharing your day, sharing your undivided attention and sharing conversation. It is a chance to give extra attention to your children and teens. Family meals foster warmth, security and love, as well as a sense of belonging. The way that you act at the table becomes a model for your children. They learn from your appreciation of the meal and your social skills - especially when outside the home. Table manners are social skills and leading by example makes it easier for parents to teach without lecturing. Using family meals as a way to sample new menus can be both fun and a great learning experience. By giving family members input and the opportunity to choose the menu, it becomes an ideal way to expand their horizons on a wider range of foods and cultures. It also can lead to healthier choices as well as developing an open mind for experiencing new things. A way to get more out of a family meal is to engage the family in menu selection, shopping and preparation. You can begin this at a very young age giving children age-appropriate tasks like stirring ingredients, washing vegetables, tearing lettuce and setting the table. As your children grow they can take on more key responsibilities and the pride that comes with preparing a special family meal. This teaches your children cooking skills, nutrition and appreciation for the effort of meal preparation. It can also provide a great source of accomplishment and sense of self-sufficiency. Plan to make your Family Day special by including all those who make up your family. Pay tribute by making your meal special and so memorable you’ll want to ensure you do it more often.
Explore together ■ There is no better province to explore than British Columbia and no better family bonding experience than sharing the thrill of a new discovery or experience. Day trips can create remarkable family memories. They offer a wonderful way to spend time together and learn more about where you live. The variety of experiences available to families is different in each region of this spectacular province you might decide to explore close to home or venture to one of the other regions in B.C. over the Family Day weekend. Whether taking SkyTrain, BC Ferries, driving, or hopping a flight, there are many ways to invest in a day of discovery. Travel is just one aspect. To maximize the experience families should involve everyone in the planning. By planning ahead you and your whole family can experience a worthwhile outing and make every aspect fun. Create a list of activities or venues and assign a rough budget for each. Allow family members to weigh in on their preferences and discuss what they would like to see, do or learn at each. You might decide to stay in a hotel and be a tourist in your own hometown. Kids or youth can map out the sites and activities,
creating a family agenda including selecting the points of interest, lunch and shopping as well as enjoying the amenities your hotel might offer. It’s the perfect way to free up everyone from everyday tasks and roles. Researching history, attractions, museums, parks and markets can teach valuable lessons and it helps children to plan within a budget. This way they are part of making important decisions, appreciate both the effort and cost of outings and will be more enthused about an agenda they helped develop. Be sure to capture your family time by taking photos, saving literature or purchasing a memento. This can lead to great family discussions about what each individual enjoyed or learned and starts you planning for future family explorations.

FAMILY FUN DAY
Family Day 2013
Activities the whole family can enjoy If you wake up to a cold and snowy day and it’s too snowy to play outside, family members can have a lot of fun together. Here are some fun indoor activity ideas:
Board games Dust off Monopoly, Scrabble and whatever other board games you’ve forgotten in the closet. Pour some hot cider and let the fun begin.
Fondue Dig out the fondue pot and have everyone help put together a fondue. It’s always fun to spear some tasty goodies in the fondue pot, while sitting in front of a crackling fire.
Sock puppets Go through the sock drawers for a handful of orphan socks. Get some yarn, buttons and big fat needles.
Special meal Go through the pantry and fridge to see what kind of yummy, creative meal you can all come up with. Everyone should have a hand in the preparation and cleanup, as well as the eating. Picnic lunch Pretend it is summer and have a picnic lunch on a blanket in the middle of the living room. Bring out all the stuffed animals for a touch of the outdoors. Do a puzzle Take out that 1,000 piece puzzle, spread it out on the kitchen table and dig in.

Are you prepared for a power outage? In the winter months, storms hit British Columbia more frequently. This increases the potential for power outages. BC Hydro suggesting six steps to ensure you and your family are better prepared. • Know the number to call when the power goes out. To report an outage, call 1-888-POWERON (769-3766) or *HYDRO on your mobile phone. Automatic notification will be available through smart meters once all the meters have been installed and the system is fully operational over the next year. • Have an emergency kit ready and easily accessible. The kit should include: flashlights, a batteryoperated radio, extra batteries, a corded telephone, warm clothing and blankets, a firstaid kit, non-perishable ready-to-eat foods, and a copy of your emergency preparedness plan. • If there is an outage,
turn off all appliances and electronics, especially electric heaters. When power is restored, power will rush to all items left in the “onâ€? position, which can cause the system to overload and possibly cause a second outage. • When the power is out, turn off all lights except one inside the home and one outside. The inside light lets you know when the power is back on and the outside light lets BC Hydro crews know. In future, smart meters will automatically let BC Hydro know when the power has been restored. • Make note of BC Hydro’s mobile-friendly website on your smart phone. The site provides updates on when power will be restored. • If you see a fallen power line, stay at least 10 metres away at all times. Never go near or touch a fallen line. Report fallen power lines with the exact location to BC Hydro. For more information, visit www.bchydro. com/outages.

treatment have resulted in more people living after cancer today than 30 years ago. Between 2000 and 2004, of those diagnosed with cancer, 83 per cent of children and 63 per cent of adults were alive five years later. That compares to only 48 per cent of children and 46 per cent of adults diagnosed between 1970 and 1974. Myth 3 – Cancer is a lot more common now. Although the actual number of people now diagnosed may seem much higher than a few decades ago (24,000 cases in 1970-74 compared to 63,000 in 2000-2004), the increase in cancer cases is primarily due to population growth. Myth 4 – Most cancers are hereditary. Most cancers are actually not due to a hereditary risk. Only five to 10 per cent of cancers are related to an inherited gene mutation. The PSO Dry Grad 2013 Hockey Game fundraiser event at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre on Jan. 31, saw strong participation from the Grad Class of 2013, teachers and local members of the RCMP.
Students give teachers a lesson in hockey Arlene Jongbloets Free Press
The PSO Dry Grad 2013 Hockey Game between grads and teachers raised slightly more than $1,700 for upcoming Dry Grad celebrations, and it entertained an audience of more than 200 people. The fun-packed game
took place at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre on Jan. 31, with 29 Grade 12 students from Peter Skene Ogden Secondary School (PSO) taking on a mixed squad of 18 PSO teachers and members of the local RCMP. Rather than the usual three periods of play, the game featured four frames of 15 minutes each. Event spokesper-
son Myra Newstead says it allowed three periods of action for all of the students and a special fourth quarter, which featured only the most skilled players on the student team, including Brett Harris and Reece Forman who play for squads in the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League elsewhere in the province.
