charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Carry is also charged with possession and attempt to transfer an AK-47-like automatic rifle, while Correia is charged with possessing and attempting to transfer a restricted handgun. The trial is

scheduled to span more than three months. In her opening statement to the jury, Saettler said the police agent who agreed to work closely with RCMP is John Garry Shank, a man with a heroin habit who spent time in federal jail.

Shank was arrested by RCMP in November 2009, after he walked away from a halfway house while on parole. Police found him with a loaded machine gun in his trailer. Saettler said his parole was revoked and he was sent

back to Kent Institution. While in jail, “something astounding happened,” Saettler said — Shank agreed to work with police as an agent. The prosecutor said at various times Carry, Adams and Correia conspired with the police agent to kill Mahon. Shank wore a recording device — a wire — in a number of meetings.

It has now been 11 weeks since Peter Moody and Susan Bond encountered a grizzly sow and her cubs about 40 minutes from their home on LD Ranch Road, north of Kimberley. The attack left Peter and Susan with multiple lacerations, bites and puncture wounds on their heads, arms, legs and torsos. The injuries put them in hospital in Cranbrook and Calgary for a total of 12 days. They have been at home since early December.

After attack, long healing process begins Continued from page 1

Peter is recovering well, with the scars on his head and arms becoming less noticeable. He still has difficulty focusing his left eye, near where the bear swiped him, and will be consulting an opthamologist. A massage therapist is treating a lower back problem resulting, he thinks, from the bear’s weight on top of him. Still, he recently began driving into town during daylight hours, and since the New Year has been getting out most days to do a short loop around the house on cross-country skis. Susan was more severely injured and her recovery is progressing more slowly. The right side of her face — eye and cheekbone — was badly damaged, and required reconstruction by Calgary plastic surgeon Dr. William de Haas. Her facial scars have healed exceptionally well but her right eye needs more healing time and remains closed. Dr. de Haas also repaired her left arm, which was cut

badly below the elbow, and right leg, which was deeply gashed above the knee and had the hamstring severed. Wounds on her arm have healed; the leg is taking more time. But she manages to get around the house with a cane and even gets outside for walks down the driveway with the aid of ski poles. And she’s working with physiotherapists to get the knee and leg back in shape.

“We’ve talked about being out in the bush again and we both recognize that we are fearful. I think it will take an effort to get back outside.” Susan Bond Susan says she is learning to temper her early expectations of a fast, painless recovery with the realities of the healing process.

“I’m learning that in terms of recovery for the kinds of injuries I have, two or three months is not a long time,” she said. “I’m now hoping that by spring I’ll be seeing better and walking unaided. I am a patient and I have to be patient. “Some days it’s difficult but what keeps us going is the huge and amazing outpouring of concern and support from our family, from friends, even from acquaintances,” Susan said. “They drive us to medical appointments, shovel snow, plow the driveway, bring meals, run errands. It’s so heartening to be the recipient of that kind of affection and good will.” Peter says that even while they were in hospital, his son Guy would sit by their bedsides with his laptop and read daily email messages from friends. “It made a real difference for our mental health to know that people were rooting for us.” Both of them can’t say enough about the care they have received.

“From the moment the ambulance arrived, we’ve had outstanding medical care,” Susan said. “It kicked into high gear for us and it hasn’t stopped. Home care, physio, referrals to specialists — it’s all there when we need it.”

enjoy hiking as much as she did before, Susan was hesitant. “Right now I’d say no, but it’s not something I really have to deal with until I can walk properly. We’ve talked about being out in the bush again and we both recognize that we are fearful. I think it will take an effort to get back outside. Our friends and neighbours have said that when the time comes, we’ll go out in a group.” “One of the things the psychologist at the Foothills talked about was taking baby steps,” Peter said. “My son Guy said that a baby step is looking out the window when you get home, and just enjoying the view. Another baby step is walking outside the house. Another is skiing around the garden. Another will be venturing out a little further.” Another aspect of dealing with the experience is to learn from it. Peter and Susan have been reading books and articles, meeting with knowledgeable people and examining their own responses to try to understand why the attack happened where it did, and if there was anything they should have done differently. One thing they have learned is that the situation they walked into was almost certain to result in a bear attack. “Everything we’ve read recently says the combination of a close sudden encounter with a grizzly sow and cubs feeding on a carcass is the most dangerous scenario in bear-human encounters,” Susan said. “As CO Jared Connatty told us, ‘You guys had a triple whammy that day.’ “We had no warning. There were no tracks, no ravens circling over the carcass. The creek was making noise. We weren’t talking. We came upon the bears suddenly, at very close range, and they had been feeding on their deer kill.” In his analysis of the attack, Conservation Officer Connatty noted: “The two victims approached the location from the east along the north shoreline of Mather Creek and as a result had little to no

indication of bear presence until the confrontation occurred on site. “The offending bear(s) were bedded either directly west or slightly northwest of the attack site just inside the fringe of the dense riparian cover as the two victims came within close proximity of the food cache. “With dense bush cover limiting visibility and the sound of running water masking other noises, the two hikers unknowingly confronted the bear(s) within close proximity, instigating a surprised/defensive response by the sow. “It is concluded that the sow grizzly was responsible for the attack and the following being the reasoning(s) for the response: 1) A reactionary response to a surprised encounter; 2) A defensive response with regards to protection of cubs; 3) A defensive response with regards to the protection of a food source.” With this in mind, no history on the bears, and the knowledge that the sow and cubs had left the area, the team of East Kootenay COs who investigated the attack decided not to pursue the animals. Susan and Peter agree with that decision. They believe the bear was only doing what instinct told her to do, and was only as aggressive as necessary. “In the bear’s defence, as soon as she saw we weren’t a threat, she left us alone,” said Susan. “It wasn’t an off-the-cuff decision not to kill her,” Peter said. “The COs determined the bear’s behaviour was predictable. It seemed she checked me out and saw I wasn’t resisting. She went back over to Susan, had one last go at her, then backed off. Her behaviour was defensive, not predacious. “She was doing what she had to do,” Peter said. “It happened. Let’s move on. The beautification project at the Elizabeth Lake entrance to the City of Cranbrook will be completed by late spring, the City of Cranbrook announced. trance has been in place for many years. Administration is provided a budget for the project, by approval of Council. From there, Administration works with staff and stakeholders to flesh out the project, and works with various levels of government and other potential funding bodies like Columbia Basin Trust to apply for grant funding if it is available. In the case of the Elizabeth Lake entrance, Administration expects the need for additional funding to complete the project as proposed, and has submitted the budget request to Council for

discussion and deliberation during the 2013 budget process. “If Council believes the process needs to be reviewed, then that is something we need to take to Administration,” Stetski said. “What is most important is that the updating of the west entrance at Elizabeth Lake will create a much more welcoming first impression of the City of Cranbrook and hopefully entice visitors to spend more time in our community.” The next budget meetings are set for Thursday, Feb. 14, and Monday, Feb. 25, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at City Hall.

Les Miserables hits the McKim stage For the Townsman

Somewhat timely with the release of the major motion picture of the same name, students of all ages have been rehearsing in the McKim Theatre since school began in September putting together an elaborate musical production of “Les Miserables” (Music/Claude-Michel Schonberg, Libretto/ Herbert Kretzmer). Set in 19thcentury revolutionary France it tells the life story of ex-convict “Jean Valjean”, played by Gustaf Hagland, and his struggles for redemption as he is pursued by the menacing guard and police constable “Javert”, played by baritone Gaëtan Boué. Adapted from the novel by Victor Hugo the audience is introduced to the various people affecting Valjean’s life and how the political situation of the times made life an ethical gauntlet of daily survival. It is a poignant and touching, yet exciting story complete with romance, black comedy and epic battles. We caught up with the youngest principle actor/ singer Declan Armstrong (age 9) to get the “skinny” on some of the behind the

scenes goings-on. Hi Declan, can you tell us a little about the character you’re playing? Declan: Well, his name is Gavroche and he is kind of a thief/beggar, but he is also involved with the revolutionaries. What’s the best part of playing Gavroche? Declan: I love that my character dies. To be Gavroche I have to feel like the king of the world in order to play his character well, which is fun. How much time have all you guys had to put in to get the production ready? Declan: We have had to practice a lot at home and at the school with Mr. Heyde and Mr. McCue. We practice three times a week and at home. At home I have a practicing ritual that involves listening to the song on the cd and reading the script at the same time. I sing with the CD and the script to memorize it. We are now practicing dress rehearsals with the orchestra. Has doing the play given you an appreciation for people living in France at that time? Declan: I am glad that I did not live during that time, during war and

during a time where people smoked and everything was scrubby and dirty. I am very lucky. You perform with many others in the production. What can you tell us about them? Declan: The actors and singers all can sing really well. The chorus is awesome and the principles are great: Gustaf, who plays Valjean is very good at blocking and acting; Gaëtan plays Javert and he is a very good singer; Blake Sharpe (Thenardier) and Jordan Anderson (Mme. Thernardier) both have awesome characters. They add comedy to the show. Connor Klassen (Marius) and Aria Siega (Cosette) harmonize well. Devin Fikis (adult Eponine) has an awesome voice; Jessica Gareau (young Eponine) is very good at character and Emery (young Cosette) has good character and expression. The show runs from February 13-16 at 7:30pm at McKim Theatre with an extra matinee on Saturday, February 16 at 2:00pm. Finance Minister Mike de Jong rejected NDP criticism of his government’s sale of Crown land Thursday, and promised an update on the disposal of up to 100 properties when he presents his pre-election budget on Feb. 19. De Jong’s comments came after NDP leader Adrian Dix and finance critic Bruce Ralston visited one of the few properties whose location is known, a large vacant lot in Surrey that was bought in 1998 as a possible future hospital site. Ralston said the government has counted on raising $475 million in 2013 and more than $200 million the following year through asset sales, to help balance a 2013 budget after the current one ends in the red by $1.4 billion.

It’s not good public policy.” De Jong said the Surrey property is an interesting choice, since a new Surrey Memorial Hospital is under construction adjacent to the old one. The site at Highway 10 and 152 Street was bought for $6 million and is currently

assessed at $25 million. “It just makes eminent sense that the Crown would divest itself of that asset, and place it back in the private sector and allow it to begin generating economic activity and jobs,” de Jong said. De Jong added that asset sales are nothing new to the B.C. government, where old school sites are often sold in order to finance new

schools in new locations. He repeated his promise that the next budget will be balanced, and said an update on asset sales will be released then. Dix said the land sales and surpluses from Crown corporations such as BC Hydro will be used to give the appearance of a balanced budget, which will not be fully debated before the legislature adjourns for the May 14 election. De Jong confirmed that the legislative session will run for 19 sitting days, starting with a throne speech on Tuesday, Feb. 12 and adjourning on March 14. Legislation to be presented includes a lengthy bill to reinstate the provincial sales tax on April 1, measures to allow a senate election, and legislation to create a new senior’s advocate.

Richard III and other tyrants Y ou can hear them shouting it in the horrible mobile-phone footage of the mob killing the wounded, befuddled Muammar Gaddafi: “Not the face, don’t touch the face.” They weren’t feeling sorry for the dying dictator of Libya. They just wanted to make sure that his corpse was recognisable. A lot of people would not feel safe, and some other people would not give up fighting for him, until they were sure he was really dead. They probably yelled the same thing while they were killing King Richard III on a battlefield near Leicester in 1485. He had only been on the English throne for two years when Henry Tudor came back from exile and overthrew him in the Battle of Bosworth, but it was essential that many witnesses saw and recognised his corpse. Otherwise there would be endless rebels claiming to be Richard and trying to overthrow the new king. In fact, we can be pretty certain that the men who killed Richard III were indeed ordered to spare his face, because they have now found Richard’s remains under a car-park in the centre of Leicester. His face is pretty much intact, even though the rest of his skull is a mess. You have to be sure that the old dictator is dead before you give your allegiance to the new dictator. They initially suspected it was Richard III because they were digging up the carpark to examine the foundations of the medieval Church of the Greyfriars, which is where he was buried. They were further persuaded because the skeleton’s spine was twisted by scoliosis in a way that would have made him look hunch-backed, as every account says that the last of the Plantagenet kings did.

Then they did a computer reconstruction of what the skull would have looked like with flesh on it, and used 3D printing to built up a plastic model that closely resembles near-contemporary portraits of the king. And finally they matched up his mitochondrial DNA with that of Canadian Michael Ibsen, who is descended from Richard’s sister, Anne of York. Yup, it’s Richard III — and here’s how he died. There is a fist-sized chunk gone from the base of the skull where a heavy, Gwynne sharp-bladed weapon, Dyer most likely a halberd (basically, an axe at the end of a pike) had sliced right through the bone and into the brain. Just below it is a smaller hole, probably made by a sword, that penetrated the bone and entered the brain. Either wound would have killed him in less than a minute. There are about a dozen other wounds, most probably inflicted after he died, but only two small ones on his face. A mob of foot-soldiers — the people who killed him were using infantry weapons — enthusiastically took part in the slaughter, but they left him recognisable. It all fits with the accounts that he was unhorsed in a cavalry melee and then surrounded and killed by Tudor infantry. “A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!” William Shakespeare has him cry as they close in, and that has the ring of truth. So Henry Tudor became Henry VII, to be succeeded by Henry VIII, the closest that English history has ever come to a Stalin figure, and then by “Bloody Mary”, and then Queen Elizabeth I (“Good Queen Bess”), while Richard III became Shakespeare’s most monstrous villain, plotting and murdering his way across three of the Bard’s best-known plays.

It was all pro-Tudor propaganda: Shakespeare, who wrote most of his plays during Elizabeth’s reign, was not fool enough to question the legitimacy of the Tudor dynasty, or to praise its enemies. We don’t know whether Richard III was really as bad as Shakespeare painted him, but he was undoubtedly pretty bad, because they all were: medieval politics was ruthless and bloody. The temptation is to say that nothing much has changed. Gaddafi was also a monster and a killer, and he died in about the same way (except for the horse). History just repeats itself in different clothing, and things are as bad as they ever were. The temptation should be resisted. Violence still works the same way it always did, but there is far less of it around. Even allowing for the great wars of the last century, the proportion of the population that dies violently now is ten times lower than it was in medieval times. Tyrants still get overthrown violently, but more of them are removed by non-violent means, and there are fewer of them around anyway. Nor are they just succeeded by other tyrants. After Gaddafi’s death, Libya held free elections, and it now has a normal civilian government. One that has a lot of work to do to restore order in the country after 42 years of Gaddafi’s tyranny and incompetence, to be sure, but it is making progress. There’s that dirty word again: “progress”. We’re not supposed to believe in that any more. What about terrorism? What about the “structural violence” of capitalism? “Progress” smacks of cultural imperialism, and even worse, it’s naive. Okay. You go and live in the 15th century. is remembered as one of the most stunningly heroic, stupendously pointless and ultimately disastrous cavalry charges in the history of modern warfare. That day in October, 1854, when, among others, the horseman of the 8th Hussars Light Brigade charged pell-mell down the field at Balaclava to try to retake British cannons captured by the Russian army. And what has that to do with our fair city of Cranbrook, you ask? Well, it’s about the odds. If not for a military whim, the odds would have been six to one in favour of our town making its scheduled appearance on the map at the proper moment. You see, there is good reason to believe that our founding father, James Baker, was to take part in the cavalry charge that saw 673 horsemen attack and some 120 die — roughly one out of every six. It has been recorded by reputable authors over the years that James, serving in the Light Brigade at the time, was reassigned to General Raglan’s staff at the last moment and therefore missed joining his fellows on their fateful ride into history. Instead, he lived to tell the tale — which he apparently rarely, if ever, did — and went on to found our present day community, but that is getting somewhat ahead of the story. James Baker, one of seven siblings, was the youngest of four brothers born to Samuel Baker and Mary Dobson. Although ultimately less acclaimed than his brothers Valentine and Samuel Jr., he certainly contributed his share to the propagation of the Baker family name. This is readily apparent in and around our town of Cranbrook when you observe Baker Mountain or tour the Baker Hill heritage district looking at the dense shrubbery or contemplate the slow dissolve of Mt. Baker School or stop at the Mt. Baker Hotel for a beverage, or walk by the Baker Home in Baker Park and wonder, perhaps, how it is that a city park went from a 125-year-old historic green-space to a senior’s housing development or drop into the Baker Hill Dental Clinic (if they take drop-ins) or the Baker Hill Heritage B & B or the Mount Baker RV Park or the Bakery department of your local supermarket which is possibly the only thing in Cranbrook that isn’t somehow related to James Baker, even though it theoretically is. James Baker is such an integral part of our community that we have erected a statue in his honour on Baker Street (Cran-

Ah well, it is a statue and, if nothing else, those of us historically inclined and overly imaginative might envision James’ brother Sir Samuel sitting astride a much larger elephant (except it was a camel) as he makes his way through the wild African jungle on his journey to discover Lake Albert above the Nile. Or perhaps his brother Valentine as he sits astride his elephant (except it was a white horse) leading his men into battle. Or perhaps his grandfather Valentine riding an elephant (except it was a small 1-gun British sloop) to confront a much, much larger French frigate of 342 guns which the little ship soundly thrashes to great acclaim throughout the kingdom and to the complete mortification of the French captain and crew. Or perhaps Captain Vancouver’s navigation officer Joseph Baker, great-uncle to James Baker, who, upon his trusty elephant (only it was the ship “Discovery”), spots a rather large outcropping in Washington State which his captain promptly names “Mt. Baker”. You see, in terms of English history the Baker family has been around for a long time and have largely been associated with aristocracy and money and large land holdings and wise business dealings and numerous adventures and occasional scandals and many books on how to improve things such as the British Army and

Abyssinia and wild beasts and Turkey (the country, not the bird) and a whole lot more. So, even though our only civic statue is in memory of a rogue elephant (no offense to Cranbrook Ed, who certainly deserves the recognition) it may, with a little imagination, represent more than that. Perhaps we may imagine James himself astride the elephant as he headed up the heights of Balaclava to join blundering British commander Lord Raglan in observing the flower of English youth ride blindly and brilliantly into death and chaos for God and country and minimum wages. James may have thanked his lucky stars on that particular day. He may have thought, “Now that I have miraculously escaped that brew-up I will go on to study at Cambridge and eventually travel to the wilds of British Columbia to start a farm that will become a town that will become a city that will become the subject of this article.” In truth, he stayed on in Crimea fighting with the army for a time, along with his brother Valentine and joined briefly by his brother Samuel but not by his brother John, who settled more or less permanently in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) to oversee one of the large family plantations, but we are getting ahead of the story yet again. In fact we are so far ahead of the story that we will have to give it a week to catch up. janusthenandnow@shaw.ca

CHAMPIONS: A young Cranbrook hockey team went to Spokane with nine skaters and one goalie, and played in a 14-team tournament last weekend. The boys won their three games with 31 goals for, and four against. They were scoring machines, with a relentless forecheck that ground the other teams down. They met another undefeated team from Trail in the final. No other team had scored on them in the tourney, so they felt pretty good - until they met the Purple Nurples. The team lit up their opponents with five goals, and won the tourney with a 5-1 victory. The boys carried themselves like perfect ambassadors the entire weekend. After hearing stories from his older brother about Ryan McGill, Kootenay Ice forward Jordyn Boyd is getting the first-hand experience this year. Jordyn’s older brother, Dustin, played four seasons in the WHL with the Moose Jaw Warriors, and got selected 98th overall in the third round of the NHL draft by the Calgary Flames. He eventually made the jump into the AHL when he was 20 years old in 2006 and played under McGill with the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights. The elder sibling by eight years, Dustin stuck with McGill for the franchise’s relocation to Illinois, which changed into the Quad City Flames, before graduating into the NHL with the Calgary Flames. McGill joined Dustin for a bit of the 2009-10

season as an assistant coach in Calgary, before the latter was traded to the Nashville Predators for a draft pick on deadline day. Dustin is now over in Kazakstan, playing for Barys Astana of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Jordyn, 18, admitted his older brother didn’t pass along any stories about his former coach, but told his younger sibling to expect an intense personality. That intensity has started to manifest as the team gets closer to the post season and guns for a playoff spot, which is just one step up in the rankings. “He’s pretty intense about it right now,” said Boyd, on what McGill is telling his players. “He doesn’t want us goofing around as much. He wants us to be focused for practices and games and he just wants us to work as hard as we can

It was against Spokane that Kootenay’s run of seven straight wins began after the Christmas break, before it was snapped by the same opponents two weeks later. “They’re a highly

skilled team, really fast and they’ve got a couple of offensive defencemen that we got to be aware of, jumping in the rush,” said Boyd, “so we just got to do what we did against Lethbridge—keep the game as simple as we can and just stick to the basics that Ryan tries to get us to perform out onto the ice, and if we do that, we should be able to come out with the win.” Spokane had a fourgame losing skid snapped with a 5-0 win against the Rockets on Wednesday, but will head into Cranbrook for only one road game before heading back down across the border. Petan piling up points for Portland Winterhawks Scott Sepich Canadian Press

PORTLAND, Ore. It’s not a big shock that a member of the Portland Winterhawks leads the Western Hockey League in scoring. What is rather surprising is the name at the top of the list. Many hockey observers expected the spot to be occupied by St. Louis Blues prospect Ty Rattie, whose 57 goals and 121 points last season were more than anyone returning to major junior hockey this season. Instead, it’s Rattie’s teammate, Nicolas Petan, who’s piling up huge numbers in his second year with the Winterhawks. Petan, a native of Delta, B.C., has recorded 36 goals and 94 points in 54 games for a Portland team that’s ranked No. 1 in the CHL and has a 43-8-1-2 record. Not bad for a guy who mostly served as a fourth-liner as a 16-year-

old rookie and failed to record a point in 22 playoff games last season. Petan’s meteoric rise has taken the five-footnine, 165-pound centre from off the NHL draft radar to a potential firstor second-round selection this summer. And to think, Petan nearly played soccer instead of hockey. “I had to make a choice when I was 11 to go with one sport or the other,” Petan said this week. “I felt at that point that I wanted to just go for it with hockey.” The decision has paid off so far, as the 17-yearold Petan continues to climb the draft rankings. A big January included a goal in the CHL Top Prospects Game and WHL Player of the Month honours. He dismisses concerns that his size might make it tough to rise into the first round of the draft.

“I don’t think it’s a defect for me,” Petan said of his frame. “It’s actually been working for me, because I can work on things like getting stronger legs and creating more speed that help me get around the bigger guys.” As far as the draft goes, Petan has played second fiddle to Winterhawks teammate Seth Jones, who’s considered the top draft-eligible prospect this year. The attention paid to Jones has brought some extra exposure for Petan, and scouts are raving about his improved speed and determination compared to last season. “It was just about coming in after a hard-working summer and making that effort pay off,” he said. As a 16-year-old, Petan spent some time early in the season centring a line with Rattie and current Calgary

Flames forward Sven Baertschi. But when the Winterhawks made some trades to acquire veterans, he found himself on the fourth line. Petan did contribute a respectable 14 goals and 35 points as a rookie, but went without a point in a post-season run that ended with a loss in Game 7 of the WHL final to Edmonton. Petan now plays with Brendan Leipsic - who is a similar size - and the slightly bigger Rattie on a line that’s perhaps the smallest in the league, but also the most dominant at even strength. Petan’s plus-54 rating leads the WHL, and he’s on pace to threaten the Portland franchise record of plus-75 posted by Andrew Ference in 1997’98. Leipsic (92 points) and Rattie (75 points) are second and fourth in the WHL in scoring, respectively, and each member

of the trio seems to know where the others will be at all times. Their chemistry is astonishing for a group that hadn’t played together until this season. “The three of us started staying after practice and working on our passing and just developing a familiarity with each other,” said Petan. “Our physicality isn’t quite there, but we make up for it by playing mentally strong.” Though skill is his clear strength, Petan would rather talk about the strides he’s made defensively - something that’s earned him regular shifts on the penalty kill this season. In the most recent off-season, Portland coach Mike Johnston challenged Petan to elevate his defensive game to earn more ice time in key situations. It worked, and Petan credits Johnston for pushing him to become

a better all-around player. Johnston was suspended for the rest of the season as part of sanctions handed out by the WHL against the Winterhawks in late November. The league charges that Portland provided illegal benefits to players in past seasons, and banned Johnston from all contact with the team through the post-season. The team was also fined $200,000 and docked nine bantam draft picks over the next five seasons. The Winterhawks have admitted to the violations, but dispute the heavy-handed punishment for things like providing flights for families to come watch their kids play in person. “It was a shocker when we heard about (the sanctions),” Petan said. “We were a bit quiet about it at first, but eventually we turned it into

The East Kootenay Volleyball Club has handed out scholarships to local volleyballers Sam Scott and Scott Bedell in recognition of their contributions to the sport within the club and the community. Recipients must display dedication to the club through athletic abilities, leadership skills, commitment to coaching other age levels and attend a post-secondary institution as a full-time student and volleyball athlete. Sam played six seasons with the EKVC and has started to take on a

coaching role. Sam played with the College of the Rockies Avalanche in the 2009-10 season and traveled to Brazil in 2011 to coach beach volleyball to underprivileged children. He missed the following season due to a medical emergency that required surgery, but has been able to work towards a full recovery and returned to beach volleyball last year. Currently, Sam is in Calgary playing libero for SAIT. During his time with the EKVC, Sam coached two seasons of indoor volleyball and took a team to a silver medal performance at nation-

als. He also obtained his Level Two coaching certificate last summer in order to coach beach volleyball at the upcoming B.C. Summer Games. Scott Bedell played with the EKVC for five years, starting in U14 and eventually earned the Rich Wayling Memorial Scholarship. He was also named Mount Baker Secondary School’s best overall male athlete during his high school years. Scott currently plays for the College of the Rockies Avalanche, but helps out with fitness with the EKVC and looks forward to coaching when he can.

Thomas chose to take this season off following the NHL lockout and was suspended by the Bruins after he didn’t

report to training camp last month. The 38-yearold goalie is in the final season of a four-year deal that counts for $5 million against the salary cap. The Islanders have plenty of room to fit Thomas’ salary on their cap, and this deal provides financial flexibility for the Bruins. Boston was up against the upper salary limit of $70.2 million, with Thomas’ sala-

WASHINGTON — New research pinpoints how the torch passed from one dominant creature on Earth to another, from the brutish dinosaur to the crafty mammal. Two studies published Thursday in the journal Science better explain the Earth-shaking consequences of a catastrophic cosmic collision 66 million years ago when a comet or asteroid smashed into the Gulf of Mexico.

The crash seemed to end the reign of the dinosaurs. And it gave way to the age of mammals that probably started with a cute squirrel-like critter and eventually led to us, the researchers report. “I think it’s fair to say, without the dinosaurs having gone extinct, we would not be here,’’ said Paul Renne, director of the Berkeley Geochronology Center, who led the research on the dinosaurs and cosmic crash. The dinosaurs’ disappearance “essen-

tially releases the little timid mammals to become the big guys.’’ Renne demonstrated how the timing of the cosmic crash exquisitely matches the disappearance of the slow-footed dinosaurs of Jurassic Park fame. His findings provide more evidence for the theory that an extraterrestrial crash was most responsible for the extinction of dinosaurs. Scientists have long thought that there were 200,000 years between the big crash and the

Scientists don’t know how long it took for the large non-avian kinds like Tyrannosaurus Rex to die off. The second study painstakingly details the family tree of the most predominant type of mammal, those that give birth after a long gestation period. The researchers propose that the first such mammal was a shrewish critter slightly bigger than a mouse with a nasty set of teeth. And it first popped in the world a little more than 65 million years ago — just after that cosmic crash. When an asteroid or comet hits Earth and kills off the dinosaurs, it’s both a tragedy and an opportunity, said Maureen O’Leary of Stony Brook University and lead author of the mammal study: “In some sense, we are a product of that opportunity.’’ O’Leary’s team looked at 4,541 different characteristics of mammals still around and extinct and traced their DNA and their physical features back until it seemed there was a common — and hypothetical — ancestor. “This isn’t something that is just a guess; this is something that is a result of the analysis,’’ O’Leary said. “This thing had a long furry tail. It had a white underbelly and it had

brown eyes.’’ It was smaller than a rat, but bigger than a mouse and likely ate insects. That first mammal evolved over the years into all sorts of different types, eventually including bats, whales, elephants and primates like us. “Boy, did a lot happen in about 200,000 years,’’ said study co-author Michael Novacek, curator of paleontology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Unlike the slow-witted dinosaurs, which weren’t known for their ability to adapt, mammals in general are more intelligent and can adapt well, O’Leary said. Scientists examining ancient plants had already estimated that just before the dinosaurs died off world temperatures plunged by about 10 degrees Fahrenheit, ( 3.4 Celsius)causing a loss of many species. Then when the asteroid or comet hit, material spewed into Earth’s atmosphere causing temperatures to spike, before dropping again. Princeton University scientist Gerta Keller, who has been one of the most vocal critics of the impact theory, said the new work still doesn’t resolve her doubts. She notes it only looks at soil in Montana. Renne said there are no impact records anywhere else that are different from what he found in Montana.

Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I lost my beautiful daughter to suicide six months ago. A strong and able firefighter, she was also extremely active in her community. Naturally, I leaned on my mother for consolation, but I didn’t find it. Instead, my mother was distant and uninterested in my pain. It was an effort even to get her to attend my daughter’s memorial service. She said it would be hypocritical to go, because she hadn’t spoken to my daughter for years. I can’t recall what hurt my mother so much that she decided never to speak to my daughter again. Now she says she doesn’t want to hear from me until I am feeling better. I am well aware of my mother’s inability to talk about things that cause her pain. However, I don’t believe pushing me out of her life solves anything. My mother told me she doesn’t approve of the way I expressed myself angrily to people who claimed to be friends of my daughter but proceeded to spread ugly lies about her past. In my grief, I confronted these people and protected my daughter as any parent would have. My mother told me to get mental health assistance, and she refuses to speak to me. I sought advice from a psychologist, who said I seem very aware of everyone’s feelings and there is nothing wrong with me. I simply need time to heal. She thinks my mother is acting unreasonably. Not only did I lose my only child, but I also lost my mother when I needed her most. Is there anything I can do to make her understand how painful this is? -- Heartbroken Dear Heartbroken: Our deepest condolences on the loss of your daughter. Your mother sounds incapable of showing sympathy or providing consolation. She may also be feeling guilty for never having reconciled with her granddaughter, believing that there was plenty of time to do so. We cannot make your mother a more compassionate human being. We can only recommend that you get grief counseling and find support through The Compassionate Friends (compassionatefriends.org) at 1-877-969-0010, an organization for parents whose children have died. Dear Annie: My parents have always favored my oldest brother. My other two siblings and I all feel this way, so it’s pretty much a given. My parents and I have never had an easy relationship. While I’ve obeyed their rules, maintained their standards and respected their wishes, I have never conformed to their ideals, so I’ve been branded as “rebellious.” When I confronted them about their favoritism, they absolutely denied treating my brother any better than the rest of us. They also told me I have a rebellious heart. How can I make them realize that they do indeed show favoritism, and that I am not rebellious? -- Tired of Favoritism Dear Tired: Those are tough challenges and will likely take a while to accomplish. Parents are reluctant to admit when they favor one child over another and often don’t see it. And it takes time and effort -- from all of you -- for parents to alter their perceptions of a child’s “nature.” Talk to your parents politely and calmly. Explain that you aren’t looking to be confrontational. Ask them to tell you more specifically what they need from you so you can work on it. We hope the honest question will open their minds and allow the relationship to improve. Dear Annie: I got a kick out of the comment from “Midwest Cook,” who exempted Brussels sprouts and sauerkraut from the “required” list of kids foods. Admittedly, sauerkraut can be hard to make appealing, but Brussels sprouts can be cooked in chicken broth to make them delicious. Our kids still request them. Grace ain’t pretty: we want what we deserve

’ve often thought that the good news just isn’t fair. In other words, before it’s good news, it’s bad news. Why? Because it’s so totally what we don’t expect. We expect fair, and we get generous. We expect justice, and we get compassion. We expect “getting what you deserve,” and we get grace. Those words—generous, compassion, grace—sound great in general, but they’re not really what we want in life. We like to be able to earn our way, so that we’re not beholden, and we can control how things work in life. Or if there is grace in the world, it’s good if we’re the ones getting the grace. We’re not crazy when others get grace. They need to earn their good fortune. Nothing gets at this better than a story Jesus tells in Matthew’s gospel. This is what life is

like when God’s in charge, says Jesus. An employer goes out at 6 am to hire day labourers to work in the vineyard. They agree on the usual daily wage. At 9, the owner goes out again to hire more workers. The owner repeats this at noon, at 3 pm and again at 5 pm. At 6, when the day’s work is done, the workers come to collect their pay. He starts with those hired last, and gives them a full day’s wage. The ones hired at the beginning of the day notice this, and begin rubbing their hands in glee. Imagine the bonus they’re gonna get. But when the owner pays them the agreed wage, they begin to grumble. “These last guys worked only an hour, and you gave them the same pay as us. That’s not fair.” The owner replies, “I haven’t done anything wrong. I paid you what

we agreed. Take your wage and go. If I choose to be generous, that’s not your business.” You can find the story in Matthew 20: 1–16. Is that fair? Well … no. It really isn’t. It’s too easy to say that the owner represents God, and God treats everyone this well. If you put yourself into the story, and identify with those who’ve been working all day long in the hot sun, you quickly sense how incredibly unfair the whole thing is. Wouldn’t you feel resentful after working all day and seeing someone else get the same amount of money for working just an hour? And that’s the problem with grace. It’s not fair. We live most of our lives expecting that the world is fair. Grace messes with all that and introduces an instability that is nearly intolerable. If those who only

In a new survey of young people in 17 countries - 1,000 respondents per nation, mainly in their 20s and 30s Canada ranked among the lowest on the planet when it came to frequency of fun. Canucks reported just 9.9 days per month in which they truly had a good time, ahead of only the French, Belgians, Russians and Poles, who claimed 9.7, 8.8, 6.7 and 5.3 fun days, respectively. Topping the list of pleasure-seeking nations was Argentina, at 14.8 days per month, followed by Mexico (13.7), Turkey (13), Spain (12.9) and Germany (12.1). Americans followed closely behind, at 11.7. “While all the Mexicans and Argentinians are out dancing in fountains, Canadians are tucked safely at home with a glass of warm milk,” said Peter Freedman, a spokesman for Badoo.com, which conducted the survey. Italy, the U.K., the Netherlands, Brazil, Switzerland and Thailand were also among the nations whose report-

ed fun days topped those of Canada. Their average numbers spanned 10.2 to 11.6. “When research shows that even the Swiss are having more fun than you, it’s an alarming sign,” said Freedman, laughing. The online survey isn’t scientific; the sample is limited to users of the social network and isn’t statistically representative of each country’s population. But its sheer size offers an interesting snapshot of how generations X and Y are approaching leisure time - not to mention the correlation between temperature and joie de vivre. Freedman, himself a Canadian, admits to spending “a lot of time sighing heavily into a cup of coffee.” “There’s an old joke that asks, `What do Canadians do for fun and excitement?’, to which the answer is, `Leave Canada,’” he said. “I always thought it was cruel slander but our study suggests there may be something to it.” The 17,000-person poll was fielded online among Badoo.com users in December 2012 and January 2013. No margin of error is stated.
