The SaySo Expression Society is getting into the swing of Valentine’s Day by playing host to Kamloops blues band Sabrina Weeks and Swing Cat Bounce. Powerhouse singer and frontwoman Weeks said the band had the date available and was eager to play at the Culture Club on Granite Avenue after receiving a warm reception there in July. “Last time we played there, there was such a good energy and the audience was really engaged, so we knew we really wanted to play there again,” Weeks said over the phone from Toronto, where she is performing in an Etta James tribute concert. “Everyone was really good to us, and we felt so valued.” The band will play some tunes from its new album Got my Eye on You, which will be released on March 2. Weeks said she will bring tickets to sell for anybody who wants to go to the album release party at Kamloops’ Plaza Hotel.

The ASK Wellness unwanted winter wear drive was so successful that the organization still has bags and bins of jackets, mittens, toques, scarves and shoes to give to anyone in need. Three bins of shoes and winter accessories are overflowing beneath a stocked coat rack by the centre’s entrance, and at least two more garbage bags full of donated items await in the kitchen for their turn to be displayed and picked up by community members in need. The centre started collecting winter wear in late November and continues to hand out items. “It was overwhelming,” ASK Merritt Director Bobbi Parkes said of the community’s donations. “The community is listening, responding, and helping those in need.” She said hundreds of people come through the door to
the centre at 2151 Granite Ave., but not all Merrittonians are aware that some of their community members are in need of basic necessities. “Food is a given,” Parkes said. “We’ll take any food that people have to give, but we deal with a lot of people with chronic health issues. Living on a limited income and being able to eat a nutritious, wellrounded diet is close to impossible. The Boosts or Ensures go out quite fast. That’s a big thing.” Brambles Bakery and Cafe gives day-old bread to the centre, which freezes and redistributes them to people in need. ASK also collected leftover food from the community Christmas dinner in December and packaged it in individual portions to give to people without enough food. Parkes said bus tickets, grocery gift cards, toiletries, blankets, towels, and sheets are

Expression Society, a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing the various talents of people in Merritt through open mic nights and special performances. Directors Mil Juricic and Ewa Derek-Skotnicki said the society is trying to recoup from debt accumulated after a rocky start that included a nine-month hiatus from holding events because of issues with the venue, but they wanted to offer Merrittonians an exciting event to raise the money.
“This will hopefully help us, and it’s a chance for Merritt to have another look at these guys,” Juricic said. “But we’re not in it to make money. We’re just happy if we break even.” Derek-Skotnicki said supporting the local music and arts scene with monthly open mic nights fosters a community feeling among attendees. “When people come to the Culture Club, they know each other,” she said. “It’s comfortable and it’s safe. It’s more like a fam-
ily.” Juricic said that community feeling is captured by the Culture Club’s intimate and welcoming setting. “Where can you go, even in a big city, to try your stuff out on an audience? You can do that here, and I think that’s the charm of it,” Juricic said. “You can practice and do just one song, or read poetry, or do anything to get a kind of bounce back from the people about your ideas.” Juricic added that a lively local scene is attrac-
tive to outside acts as well — which is what happened with Sabrina Weeks and Swing Cat Bounce. “We’re trying to bring some of this stuff to Merritt because one of the things we promised for SaySo is, if we can get enough of a following, then we could attract to Merritt what people would normally go out of town to see,” Juricic said. The show starts at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Tickets are available in advance from Country Bug Books and Gifts.

Nearly one year after the First Responder program launched in Merritt, the fire department is set to receive protection from disease exposure, the B.C. government announced on Thursday. The initiative will also help protect ambulance services and others involved in emergency response. The Emergency Intervention Disclosure Act is set to come into effect on March 2, after its approval last May. The initiative was drafted to address the heightened risk in emergency services of coming into contact with people’s bodily substances. President of Ambulance Paramedics of BC
Bronwyn Barter said the legislation will help. “[We] are proud of the work we provide to British Columbians every day,” he said. “This is an important step for B.C.’s paramedics.” If an emergency worker comes into contact with someone’s fluid, a court order can be issued to obtain a sample of the person from whom the contact was made. Without the sample, the worker could face months of uncertainty about whether they have come into contact with a communicable disease. “In the last year, we’ve heard how important this legislation is to our first responders,” Minister of Jobs Pat Bell said in a release. “These people put their lives on the line to save

A new poll has found 61 per cent of B.C. residents oppose Enbridge’s proposed Northern Gateway pipeline, while support is at 35 per cent. And the Insights West online survey found opponents of the project are more entrenched — 38 per cent are strongly opposed, compared to just 11 per cent who strongly support the new route for crude oil across northwestern B.C. to Kitimat. “The negative side has continued to build momentum,� said Insights West president Steve Mossop, citing a hardening of opinions against Enbridge in a series of polls since last spring. “Opinions are becoming much stronger,� he said, likening the Enbridge issue to
the crystallization of public opinion against logging in Clayoquot Sound in the 1990s. “It’s a bit of a snowball effect,� Mossop said. “And it becomes very difficult to change a very entrenched position like that.� It’s a different story in Alberta, where the survey, which polled 512 B.C. residents and 562 Albertans, found 75 per cent support the project. Respondents in both provinces agreed by large margins that the pipeline will create new jobs, support economic growth and create new capital investment. But environmental concerns — the risk of ocean spills as well as pipeline construction impacts on land — trumped the economic benefits for most B.C. residents. “Even the nega-
