❚ EMERGENCY RESPONSE

City approves emergency plan with RDKB

JIM HOLTZ

For the Grand Forks Gazette

Grand Forks city council approved an emergency management agreement (EMA) between the City of Grand Forks and the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary. The EMA allows streamlined co-operation between individual municipalities and the regional district, including the sharing of resources, manpower and equipment, in times of disaster or emergency. All participating municipalities agree to contribute resources to other municipalities or the regional district on request, while reserving the right to maintain adequate resources for their own anticipated needs. In addition, the plan calls for the municipality requesting assistance from others to reimburse those municipalities providing the extra assistance. Grand Forks Mayor Brian Taylor said, “It’s a great deal for us; by co-operating with the region we can ensure that when there is an emergency, we can respond with all the resources that are available. There is no loss for us and there is everything to gain.”

Grand Forks Fire Chief Dale Heriot agreed. “It’s going to be of great benefit to the city. It gives us more help and variety of resources and especially in the event that we have to open up an emergency operations centre; regional district personnel would give us a hand in case we have a big event. That just helps the citizens of the community get the work done much quicker and more efficiently.” The EMA establishes very clear procedures for emergency response, including the chain of command. “It’s actually much better,” Heriot said, “Because you are not going to get all the confusion between agencies.” Both Taylor and Heriot believe that the financial burden on municipalities and local taxpayers will also be eased under the plan in case of largescale emergencies. “When we declare an emergency, the province kicks in for a lot of the cost for that when we are working as a co-ordinated regional effort and so the provincial help removes much of the burden on the taxpayers,” Taylor said. Heriot said, “As long as we have a task number through Emergency Management BC, then we can recoup a portion, or possibly all of the funds, that we had to lay out.”

Both feel the city and its residents should be pleased with the agreement. “Whether it is a flood or a fire,” Taylor said, “or even when we have major accidents on the highway where we have to bring in resources from outside of the city, it is nice to know that those resources are available when we need them.”

Grand Forks and the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary have entered into an emergency management agreement, which will allow for streamlined co-operation between the two.

z INFRASTRUCTURE

Trails society to use $56K grant on project JIM HOLTZ

For the Grand Forks Gazette

The TransCanada Trail Association has awarded the Grand Forks Community Trails Society $56,000 to put toward work on the trail from Grand Forks to Christina Lake. In a presentation to city council on Feb. 4, society treasurer Mary Ann Westaway said that the money was earmarked for the engineering work that would be required in preparation for paving the 17.5 km trail. “The plan is for the trail to be three metres wide, though that will depend on the engineering report,” Westaway told the Gazette. She added that the Grand Forks Community Trails Society hopes to have Phase 1 (beginning at 68th Avenue and continuing up until Nursery Trestle) complete by summer. The remaining Phase 2, from Nursery Trestle up through east end of Gilpin Grasslands Provincial

Park and Phase 3 from the provincial park to Cascade Gorge Trestle, will be completed once additional funding can be arranged. Westaway said, “We’re soliciting someone to do an environmental assessment of the trail as well.” When asked about the city’s involvement in the trail, Grand Forks Mayor Brian Taylor said, “I think what we are going to see next is that (the community trails society) will be asking the city to consider paving up to the new landing and parking lot at Roxul, which is basically the city limit. I think there will be a strong lobby to have the city pave that section as a demonstration, to show how effective it is to link our existing paved trails to that kick-off area (of the TransCanada Trail).” When finished, this portion of the TransCanada Trail will allow pedestrian, equestrian, and bicycle travel. Those with disabilities who require electric scooters will also be accommodated, Westaway said.

Transfer stations on land illegally, to close by early-May

KARL YU

Gazette Editor

Unattended waste transfer stations at Texas Point and McRae Creek Road at Christina Lake on the East Lake Road right-of-way will close by May 1. Alan Stanley, Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) director of environmental services, made the announcement last Thursday at an Area C town hall meeting and cited a number of concerns for nine such transfer stations across the RDKB, including the fact that some were illegal. “We started doing our due diligence and looking into these transfer stations and what we found is, to everyone’s amazement, is that we actually had no permits to be on any of these nine unattended transfer stations. They were all on Crown rights-of-way and to occupy a Crown right-of-way for any purpose you have to have a permit for works within a right-of-way,” explained Stanley. “We found that we had no legal permission to be on any of these.” He said that the RDKB looked into keeping the stations where they were but there were a lot of obstacles in terms of obtaining legal permission to keep the unattended sites. Stanley said that generally there is permitting for pipes and sewers within a right-of-way, not an unattended garbage bin area and added that it was also hard to maintain the stations as items such as microwaves and tires were being left at the sites. “We went through every one of our sites and found just absolute nightmares in terms of public and staff health and safety. We found things like propane tanks thrown into the bottom of the bin with car batteries thrown on top of them and

this was ongoing and these sites were cleaned up on average two, sometimes three times a week,’ Stanley explained. “It was just this ongoing maintenance issue.” There are new regulations to build transfer stations, such as fencing and buffer zones, things Stanley said couldn’t be done in the Crown rights-of-way. “Our options were extremely limited in terms of what to do with these things,” said Stanley, adding that the RDKB board has struck a policy that creates a preference for staffed facilities with every person within the district being within a 30-minute drive of a staffed facility. “We applied that to the existing system and it turns out that there are a number of, what we would call, extraneous transfer stations that are closer than 30-minute drives to the nearest staffed facility – both Texas Creek and McRae Creek are inside 30-minute drives to the Christina Lake transfer station,” he said. Grace McGregor, RDKB Area C director, said that the two stations were put there for boat access users but in actuality was being used by others as well. “What it boils down to is that everyone else in the area was paying to either take their garbage or have it picked up. The boat access people were supplied with a bin, which was being used by numerous other people, not just the boat access people,” McGregor said. In addition to the two at Christina Lake, transfer stations at Bridesville, Westbridge and Jewel Lake will be closed as well. Stanley said that a report will be forwarded to the RDKB environmental services committee tomorrow, recommending approval of communications plan to notify affected residents of the May 1 closure.

z Our View

Go to final Bruins game of season The Grand Forks Border Bruins close their 2012/13 campaign with games against the Ghostriders in Fernie on Friday and then with an afternoon home game against the Spokane Braves in Grand Forks Sunday afternoon. While the community won’t see any postseason hockey, the players have been visible in the community helping out at some of the Grand Forks and District Public Library’s Fabulous Friday events, the Grand Forks Rotary Club’s Halloween Bonfire and Black Press and the Grand Forks Gazette’s Reach-AReader literacy campaign last fall. Local players Brandon Savaia and Tyler Van Camp said that they love it when Grand Forks Arena is full and that is why everyone should make it out to the team’s final home game Sunday to support the team in its last game of the season. If you look strictly at the standings, see this season’s 8-39-0-3 record and the team sitting at the bottom of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Neil Murdoch division, it’s easy to say that it was another bad season but that’s not the case. Consider, the team went 1-49-0-2 last season and it was blown out in a number of games with only 106 goals for and 455 against. This season, Grand Forks Border Bruins’ head coach and general manager Nick Deschenes has the team playing better than it has at any point last season. The team is able to compete for most of its games. While the team seemed out of its element on a number of occasions last season it doesn’t this season and at a home game against Revelstoke, where there was a big crowd, the team managed to win 7-4, so why not pack Grand Forks Arena for the last game of the season? It will be the last chance to do so until September when the season starts again. The players have been working hard and it is showing with eight times as many wins as the season previous and whether you believe it or not, a rabid crowd can make a difference between a win and a loss as players can feed off the energy. And if that isn’t enough to convince you to cheer on the team in its final home game, Roxul is sponsoring the game and there will be free admittance to all. A packed arena would mean a lot to the players and it might even contribute to a win.

With the fishing derby at Wilgress Lake, a junior and senior boys basketball tournament at Grand Forks Secondary School and a hockey tournament at Grand Forks Arena this past weekend, it didn’t make sense for me to take the long weekend off for Family Day. But even though I spent Monday at the office, this doesn’t mean that the inaugural long weekend in February wasn’t welcomed – if not for me, for other workers across the area and province. The second annual Wilgress Lake Fishing Derby even got to add an extra day thanks to Family Day Monday. It has been suggested by some that western culture has too many vacations and holidays but the long weekend only sees one day off and it is so welcome.

z Yu Speak

KARL YU

Premier Christy Clark always seems to be drawing fire in one way or another and while some say the institution of Family Day could be an election ploy she is right when she says there was only one holiday between New Year’s Day and Easter previously, which meant there was anywhere between two or three months without some extra time off, depending on when Easter falls. And while that might not seem like a lot, for the person who has to work full time, it is way too long to be working straight without some kind of break. It’s not

easy, working to pay the bills, and going through the daily grind week in and week out can eventually wear a person out, which is why the Family Day long weekend is so needed for workers. My only complaint is that while the provincial government said that it consulted with people to decide which day to make Family Day (the second Monday in February), the other provinces in Canada that celebrate it (or another February long weekend) have it on the third Monday of February. Which means if you want to visit family in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, Manitoba or Prince Edward Island and time the long weekend in unison, it won’t happen. Nevertheless, there is a long weekend in February and it is a chance to recharge the batteries and it’s better than nothing.

LETTERS z CHILD CARE

Lack of funding for special needs children Editor: I want to raise awareness about the lack of funding for children with special needs in our communities. Did you know that Early Intervention and Supported Child Care Services have not received an increase in funding in the West Kootenay Boundary area for almost eight years? Yet the number of children with special needs continues to increase every year! Wait lists are growing, services are consultative, shared support seems to be more the norm and children’s special needs are not met for a ridiculous amount of time. As a parent of a child accessing these services, I feel this is unacceptable. Rather than investing in our children, our future, they are choosing to spend money elsewhere. What’s truly disheartening is that some children have to wait 18 months to two years for certain services, which in some cases totally defeats the purpose of early intervention!!! In essence, service need outweighs service ability and it’s not fair to make children and families wait for services that could potentially change a child’s development.

In some cases, families have to settle for the bare minimum that doesn’t optimally address their children’s needs, whereas other children seem to have “fallen through the cracks.” It’s imperative that the province shows more of a commitment to investing in the early years. Early Intervention and Supported Child Care Services should be seen as essential services. Decades of thorough research indicate that children’s earliest experiences play a critical role in brain development, especially in the first three years of life. High quality early intervention services improve outcomes for children, families and communities, and can reduce the incidence of future problems in learning, behaviour and health status. Overall, intervention is likely more effective and less costly when it is offered earlier, when the brain is most capable of change. I’m sure our region’s story is not unique. I encourage others to engage in advocacy efforts in this regard. We need to let the government know that investing in ALL of our children, regardless of ability, should be at the top of its agenda – ALWAYS! Laranna Androsoff, Grand Forks

z WORLD POLITICS

Withdraw support

Editor:

z OPINION Feb. 6, 2013 issue of the Grand Forks Gazette) I want to add my short words to a very serious subject. I commend S. Ewasyn for coming forward with very tangible questions concerning Canada, Britain and the U.S.’s continued support of Israel’s occupation of Palestine as a whole. The amount of money pumped into the Israeli government annually by the west is staggering! Why is it that we as sovereign nations continue to allow our peoples to suffer massive poverty, crumbling infrastructure and almost non-existent job markets while billions, I repeat billions flow annually to one of the most powerful countries in the Middle East? What is it that we receive in return for our support? War-mongering and aggression that’s what; all on our dime! This is a country that refuses to sign on to the nuclear nonproliferation treaty! A country that threatens each and all of its neighbours without cause! A country that flaunts international law with smug contempt! I for one say no more! We as a people must stand against this apartheid situation in Palestine! If Israel refuses to meet its neighbours on a level playing field, refuses to adopt compassionate and diplomatic governance then we must withdraw all support! Violence and hate beget violence and hate. When will we learn? Ben Sorelenson, Grand Forks

Demanding more for your health care

In November, I held an MP forum in Princeton, Keremeos and Osoyoos. The main concern in Princeton was health care and the loss of 24-hour ALEX ATAMANENKO emergency service at the hospital. It might be interesting for people to know that the federal NDP is organizing public consultations on the future of free, universal health care in our country. The consultations will focus on four priority areas: improving access to prescription medication, home and longterm care services, the role of health care professionals and how to assist all Canadians in leading a healthier life. As NDP health critic Libby Davies stated, “We can work together with Canadians, health care professionals and the provincial and territorial governments to determine what changes are needed to adapt our health care system to the 21st century.” I hope to get Davies to our area in the new year as part of her Canadian tour. At the Princeton forum, Ed Staples, vice-president of the Save Our Hospital Coalition, gave an excellent overview of health care in Canada as part of his presentation. The following is part of what he said: “The founding principle of health care in Canada is equality. This principle gave us the Canada Health Act, which provides for equal access to quality health care regardless of who you are, where you live, or how much money you make. Unfortunately, this principle is under attack at both the provincial and federal level. These attacks come in the form of budget cuts justified by the alarmist message that health care costs are unsustainable. “Sustainability rationale is a myth. As a percentage of Canada’s Gross Domestic Product, health care spending has remained steady at between four and five per cent since 1975. “In solidarity with the BC Health Coalition, Princeton’s Save Our Hospital Coalition opposes any erosion of the Canada Health Act’s principles of universality, comprehensiveness, portability, accessibility, and public administration. We are against user fees, privatization, corporatization, and any other barriers to equal access to health care.” In 2004, federal and provincial first ministers signed a 10year Canada Health Accord, identifying several priorities for health care reform in Canada, including:

z In the Spotlight

• reducing wait times and improving access; • home care; • primary health care reform, including electronic health records; • health research and innovation, and, • accountability and reporting to citizens We need all provincial, territorial, and federal health ministers to create a new Canada Health Accord that first and foremost recognizes the values of equality and equity of health care for all Canadians. Public health care is affordable and sustainable. It is privatization that we can’t afford. According to the BC Health Coalition, renewal of the Health Accord in 2014 must be based on predictable, sustainable federal funding that includes a six per cent escalator for a full 10 years. Commitment to a federally financed Canada Health Transfer equalization formula will ensure we continue to build a fair, accountable and cost effective public health care system that provides high quality care.” “Unfortunately, the federal government has made it clear that they will not be taking these steps unless Canadians demand that they do.” – Alex Atamanenko is MP for the B.C. Southern Interior

Stewart: trades program successful

JIM HOLTZ

For the Grand Forks Gazette

At the Jan. 21 School District 51 board meeting, Grand Forks Secondary School Principal Scott Stewart presented a summary of the first year of the district’s trades program: Pathways, which Stewart deemed a success. Twenty-four students took part in the program which was divided into two sections or pathways. Stewart said that most of the students took advantage of the opportunity the program offered to complete certificate training that would help them find work. Among the certificates the students achieved were Food Safe, World Host, Workplace Hazardous Materials Safety System (WHMIS) and forklift operator. “We have indications from a number of employers,” Stewart said, “that with those certifications it gives kids a leg up in the hiring process.” In answer to questions concerning the future of the program and how it was viewed by other students, Stewart said, “We have a lot of kids now who have seen what their friends have participated in and they’re kind of anxious to get involved.” Stewart hoped that the board would continue to provide funding for the program. Though districts have been given the authority by the Ministry of Education to establish their own school schedules and timetables, the same criteria that have been used in the past will be applied next year in SD51. Superintendant Michael Strukoff said, “So a Labour Day start, end of June finish, two week breaks at spring and Christmas and all our weeks will be four day weeks.” Student numbers Board member Vicki Gee asked if it was possible to get anecdotal reports that gave reasons for students dropping

out of school. Further discussion revealed that the number of students leaving was not high and that the reasons varied from families moving, to job opportunities, to decisions to home school. Board chair Teresa Rezansoff indicated that the high schools monitor their own students and try to determine reasons for leaving but that because there have not been any trends in that direction, there was no action required at the district level. 2012-13 financials Secretary-treasurer Jeannette Hanlon provided the latest budget figures, indicating that the 2012-2013 school year will have balanced revenue and expenditures exceeding $16 million. Items that had not previously been figured into the budget included a drop in the number of international students, costs related to the Fundamental Skills Assessment, increases in medical and health benefits, and the costs of an anti-bullying campaign. Gee asked for a review of the budget process, indicating that she felt a need for more information on programs and other budget items before they are simply either included or excluded from the final budget. Other members expressed satisfaction with the past process. The board determined that after a decision yesterday (Tuesday) about realigning the grades to include a middle school (result was not known at press time), the board would then be able to meet with the district’s administrative officers to begin the budget process, followed by altering or re-establishing strategic planning goals and then beginning the consultation process with teachers, CUPE and the general public. Information concerning the school board and SD51 can be found on their website.

How to establish a budget Resolutions abound come the dawn of a new year. Fitness and finances tend to dominate many people’s resolutions, with the goals of shedding a few pounds and saving more money both being popular resolutions. For those whose focus will be on finances in the coming year, establishing a budget for the new year is a good place to start. The following are a few tips for men and women that should help them plan budgets for the new year and reach their financial goals over the next 12 months. • Start with your income. How much money is being brought into the household will go a long way toward determining your budget. The first month of the year, when people will receive their earnings statements from the previous year, should provide a clear-cut picture of just how much income the household is generating. Once you have that information, you can begin to establish a budget. • Make a list of your bills. Knowing what’s coming in is important when establishing a budget, but so is having a firm grasp of what’s going out. Make a list of all of your monthly expenses, from the big ones like a mortgage payment to the smaller ones like how much you spend on a cup of coffee each day. When making a list of these expenses, make note of the day bills are due each month. This can help you determine which weeks of each month you’ll be able to save more money and which weeks you will need to tighten your belt and pay existing bills. Such knowledge will help you establish a budget. • Make a list of anticipated expenses. Some expenses are there every month. Others are those you expect, such as home improvement projects you plan to finance in the coming year. Make a list of these anticipated expenses. This may involve taking some inventory of things around the house, such as any appliances that may be on their last legs, bigger issues like a roof that may need to be replaced or a bathroom you finally plan to remodel. Once you have compiled this list, research how much each project figures to cost you. This should give you an idea of how realistic each project is for you, and whether or not you will be able to tackle multiple projects in the coming year. • Don’t forget about debts. Many people plan a budget more to get out of debt than to save for a rainy day. When establishing a budget for the year ahead, calculate how much debt you’re currently carrying. Though you can do so if you prefer, it’s best to exclude existing installment loans like a mortgage or a car note from your list of debts. Though those can be considered money you owe, they are more in line with the monthly expenses you need to live than credit card debts you simply need to get rid of. If your debt is considerable or even small, see if there is anything you can remove from your list of monthly expenses (i.e., cable television or streaming video subscription) so you can devote that money to eliminating your debt. In addition, those with considerable debt should prioritize ending that debt over projects you want to tackle that aren’t exactly necessities. For example, if your kitchen is outdated but still safe and functional, postpone the kitchen remodel until you have eliminated your debt. • Decide where you can cut costs. Chances are you’re establishing a budget because you have a specific financial goal in mind or because you examined last year’s financial statements and realized you fell short of your savings goals. So you likely know you need to cut some costs, and part of establishing a budget is deciding which costs you can cut. Some of the more common ways people cut costs at the dawn of a new year includes deciding to dine out less, canceling a cable television subscription or removing premium channels from their package, driving less to save money on fuel and forgoing store-bought coffee for java they make at home. Each of these budget cuts can lead to substantial savings over a full year, and none of them are life-altering to the point of lowering a person’s quality of life. • Include savings into your budget. Living on a budget is not always easy, especially for those people who are not used to doing so. Include weekly, bi-weekly and monthly savings goals. If you stick to this plan, you will have something to show for your financial discipline at the end of each month, and light at the end of the tunnel can be a motivating factor as you adapt to living on a budget.

Did you know that the penny has disappeared from circulation? Do you have pennies that are hanging around the house, in your wallet, or at the bottom of your purse? Would you like to find a good use for those pennies? For decades Canada has been polio free, but many Third World countries still have a long way to go to achieving this goal. The Rotary Club of Grand Forks, part of the worldwide Rotary International organization, is collecting the steel coins for its Pennies for Polio campaign. Thirteen cents buys one dose

of polio vaccine for some person in a Third World country where polio is prevalent. On Feb. 2 at the Christina Lake Winterfest, the Rotary Club of Grand Forks was selling its famous kettle corn. A group of Winterfest attendees emptied their wallets and purses of unwanted pennies and the club collected 497 pennies. That will buy approximately 38 doses of polio vaccine. Way to go, Christina Lake. There are penny jars at numerous Grand Forks businesses, including the Grand Forks Gazette’s office. During the month of February, fill the jars of your unwanted pennies, and the Rotary Club will put them to very good use. The penny may be out of circulation but it can still be very valuable. Let’s give the penny a great send-off! Help us eradicate polio in our world.

The Grand Forks Peewee rep hockey team fell short of its goal of winning a home tournament this past weekend at Grand Forks Arena, settling for third place. The team started off tournament play well enough defeating the Tier 3 Summerland Jets by a final of 4-1 on Friday and followed that up with a pair of blow-out wins on Saturday – the peewee reps defeated the Tier 3 Columbia Valley Rockies 13-2 in the morning and then beat the Tier 4 Cranbrook Ice 14-0 that same evening. But according to coach Darryl Turner, the team thought things would be just as easy in a knockout round game against Semiahmoo on Sunday, which ended in a 4-2 loss for the Grand Forks team. “We started out really well and we cruised through the round robin portion,” Turner said. “Good teams have to learn how to win and you learn a lot more from a loss. Our team went in thinking, expecting to win that (Semiahmoo) game and I think we fell behind. We dominated the second half but dug too big of a hole and

couldn’t come back.” Turner gave credit to Semiahmoo saying it was a good team that knew how to clog up the neutral zone. “They knew how to get their sticks in the passing lanes, deflect the shots,” he said. However, Turner said that it’s better to lose now as opposed to during the upcoming Peewee Tier 4 B.C. Hockey Championships in Grand Forks in mid-March. “We can learn from this an keep building and moving forward; it’s a good learning experience,” Turner explained. “We just talked about this in the dressing room and said, ‘Remember this. Learn from this.’ Experience is everything and if you can learn from that and just key and get ready and not give anyone a free pass, we’ll be OK. We just need to remember these ones we let slip away and the season’s full of peaks and valleys and hopefully this will jump-start us and have us in the right direction.” The Tier 4 B.C. Hockey Championships will go from March 17 to 22 at Grand Forks Arena and volunteers are still needed. You can contact Turner at darryl.turner@sd51.bc.ca for more information on the tournament or to lend a hand.

With the season winding down, the Grand Forks Border Bruins earned their eighth win taking down the Spokane Braves 3-2 in OT on Saturday night. Forward Jacob Jeske netted his first hat trick while goalie Dallas Varey made 36 saves to earn his first win with Grand Forks. Grand Forks head coach and GM Nick Deschenes said he is telling players to finish off on a high note. “We haven’t beaten Spokane yet and they were a team that we were chasing for a playoff spot,” Deschenes said. “To

With goalie Dominic Stadnyk feeling ill Varey started again and Nathan Cory, Connor Bowen, Jackson Purvis and Coleton Dawson scoring in that game. “Against Castlegar it was David vs. Goliath,” Deschenes explained. “We had a tough travel back from Spokane so we got out of the gates slow in the first, but we came back in the second

They are a veteran squad trying to win it all and we are in the early stages of rebuilding, but I believe we narrowed the gap with them this season,” he said. The team will be in Fernie to play the Ghostriders on Friday and the finale for the 2012/13 season will go Sunday at 2 p.m. at Grand Forks Arena. Roxul is sponsoring the game and admission is free.

Grand Forks Secondary School senior basketball team guard Jason Usselman is in his final year as he is in Grade 12. Prior to a home tournament game against J.L. Crowe on Friday (an eventual 55-46 win), he sat down with the Grand Forks Gazette for a chat about a number of basketball-related topics Gazette: Talk about changes you’ve seen with the team over the last few years. Jason Usselman: I’ve been playing with most of this group since Grade 8. We’ve built pretty good chemistry. We’ve had our ups and downs. Gazette: Talk about the team this year. Usselman: We haven’t been do-

ing as good as we should be but we’re hoping to change that for zones. Gazette: Talk about the team’s strengths. Usselman: We’re pretty good at driving and taking it to the hoop but we really don’t have an outside shot. Gazette: Talk about your strengths. Usselman: I’m a pretty good ball handler and pretty good at taking it to the hoop too. Gazette: Talk about your weaknesses Usselman: I’m kind of selfish and my outside shot isn’t that great. Gazette: If you were to pattern yourself after a National Basketball Association player, who would it be? Usselman: Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers).

The Grand Forks Secondary School junior boys’ basketball team took part in a home tournament this past weekend (it was a junior and senior boys tournament) but lost 60-46 against J.L. Crowe (on Friday), 66-32 to Summerland and 71-41 to George Elliott Secondary from Lake Country, B.C. The latter two games were on Saturday. “Throughout the tournament I feel we probably played to our level,” explained head coach Jason Hayashi. “As

the season has progressed, I’ve seen a lot of improvement in terms of the players’ skills but as a team we’re just not quite cohesive enough and we still need to clean up our fundamental play, our passing and reduce our turnovers.” The junior team had to get up bright and early for the game against Summerland as tip-off was at 8:30 a.m. and that had an effect in the game against Summerland, where the team committed numerous turnovers. “I think we were probably getting tired,” Hayashi said of the turnovers. “We do have more players on the team but a couple of them

couldn’t make it today and I think we were just getting tired, our minds were getting lazy and we just made bad passes and weren’t taking care of the ball.” GFSS junior player James Gow took the blame for some of the turnovers against George Elliott and agreed that fatigue did play a factor. “It was (exhaustion) and fatigue that made it so we couldn’t concentrate properly,” Gow said. “Everybody was tired. Quite a few of the turnovers were me and it again, I was too tired to be able to concentrate properly and make good decisions.”

The Grand Forks Secondary School (GFSS) senior boys’ basketball team ran the table with a 3-0 record, winning home tournament this past weekend. The senior boys defeated Trail’s J.L. Crowe 55-46 on Friday before defeating Nakusp 58-38 on Saturday morning and then Mount Sentinel 56-40 on Saturday afternoon – the tournament didn’t have a playoff and was best strictly on win-loss record. GFSS guard Jason Usselman led the team in scoring against Crowe with 18 points while Damien Rougeau (21 points) and Max Nicholson (16 points) were leading point-getters against Nakusp and Mount Sentinel respectively. GFSS senior coach Michael Wirischagin was happy that his team took first place and while he said the team started strong, he wished it would finish that way too. “All three games we came out hot. We didn’t necessarily hit all our shots but we were able to limit our opponents from scoring,” Wirischagin explained. “We got a cushion in all three games and we didn’t play so well in the second quarter. In the first two games, I’d say we played better first halves, than we did second half’s, especially in our second game, we didn’t play a good second half at all, in fact if you were to add up the points, we probably (were outscored) in the second half.” The senior Wolves’ head coach did think the team finished the tournament strong with its win over Mount Sentinel, saying that the win was

more of a complete game from the team. Wirischagin lauded Usselman and Rougeau as players that stood out throughout the tournament and also was pleased with Nicholson’s play in the final game. “Maxwell Nicholson is a heart-and-soul type of guy and he went out there and he played at both ends and he made his opportunities. He went to the right spots, he got the ball and he put it in the hoop,” said Wirischagin. “I think in (the Mount Sentinel) game, we played a really solid, full game,” Nicholson said. “I think this was my best game for sure because I was doing the flex cuts. It wasn’t all me at all. I was just in a good spot for the offence to get all its baskets – that’s why I scored.” Wirischagin was concerned the two games on Saturday would affect the team’s energy level and planned accordingly. “I don’t think the (two games) did affect us. I thought it would but ultimately, I don’t think it made much of a difference, maybe near the end of the game but I also called the timeouts to give our team an extra break,” he said. “I thought it would’ve played more of a factor but ultimately I don’t think it did. The team has a tournament in Kelowna next.

Robbie was raised in Squamish, B.C. He worked as a tug boat operator in his younger days. In 1975 Robbie married Sharon Dodd, and settled on the “ Ranch “ up the North Fork. Once moving here, Robbie became a faller for 20 plus years. Robbie was a strong, proud cowboy who had a zest for life, love of his family and animals. There aren’t many cowboys that could ride his horse into a bar and get away with it year after year. He had an amazing personality that touched many. Robbie always had time for his friends, quick visit on the street or over coffee. He never turned down the chance to exchange stories, through the past few years when he showed his true grit and strength right to the end. Robbie was an active member of the local horse and wildlife club. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and rancher. He was one of the last true cowboys. He is survived by wife Sharon and children: Jody (Steve) and Jason (Jasmine), and five grandchildren: Emma, Ty, Blake, Marissa and Miranda. Sister Diane (Ken) Vanderberg and his nephews and nieces. Memorial of Robert McPherson will take place at 1:00 p.m. on February 16, 2013 at Christina Lake at the Community Hall. The family would like to thank the wonderful support and care from the staff at the Hospital and Silver Kettle. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Heart and Stoke Foundation.

In loving memory of

Barbara Oakes (1950 - 2013)

Barbara Lynn Oakes of the Crowsnest Pass, Alberta, passed away at the Crowsnest Pass Health Care Centre while surrounded by her loving family on February 5, 2013 after a long and valiant battle with cancer at the age of 62 years. Barbara was born on March 18, 1950 in Campbellton, Restigouche County, New Brunswick to parents Bill & Joyce Nichol. Barbara grew up in Charlo, New Brunswick and graduated from high school in 1968. After marrying her loving husband, Jim Oakes, in 1972, their journey together took them to Thompson, MB, Princeton, BC, Grand Forks, BC and finally Coleman, AB. Along this journey, Barb touched and impacted many people in a positive way: as a friend, a bank teller, a secretary within the mining industry and a secretary at an elementary school. She truly loved her work with the school and looked forward to helping any child that was in need. Barbara will be sadly missed by her loving husband Jim; her loving sons, Andy (Tanya) and Tim (Tari); her cherished grandchildren, Emily, Abby, Hunter, and Ryder; her parents, Bill & Joyce Nichol; her sisters, Brenda Nichol and Margaret (Fenton) Yeo; her brother-in-law, George Oakes; her sistersin-law, Jessie Baldwin, Grace Sellick, Barbara (David) Cool and Grace Oakes; as well as her nieces, nephews, extended family and numerous friends. She was predeceased by Jim’s parents, Allison & Ethel Oakes; her brothers-in-law, Aloysius (Vera) Oakes, Delbert Oakes, Nick Baldwin and sister-in-law, Pat MacLeod. The Memorial Service honouring Barbara’s life was held on Friday, February 8, 2013 at 10:00 am at Fantin’s Funeral Chapel with tributes provided by the family and prayers led by Rev. Janni Blegum. Condolences may be registered at www.fantinsfuneralchapel.ca. Donations in memory of the late Barbara Oakes may be directed towards the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation, “Palliative Care Program” (Bag 1, Blairmore, AB T0K 0E0). Fantin’s Funeral Chapel entrusted with arrangements. (403) 562-8555.
