The Castlegar Rebels picked a good time for a great weekend. The Rebs knocked off the surging Beaver Valley Nitehawks twice in a row, 4-2 Friday and 2-0 Saturday, and then crushed Grand Forks at home 10-4 Sunday for good measure. The three wins, combined with the losses by BV as well as Nelson, clinched top spot and home ice advantage throughout at least the first two play-off rounds for Castlegar. “It gives you a bit of a mental edge heading into the play-offs but more importantly it’s having a good weekend and getting the wins,” said Rebels’ head coach Steve Junker. “Obviously, if you can get first place it feels good and it’s good for our confidence. It does give us home ice which is a big thing. “More importantly it was about getting our games together. I thought our guys played well. We had good showings from a lot of guys. We were missing some guys that

were up in Junior A.” Goaltending was a strong point on the weekend for Castlegar particularly against BV with both ‘tenders, Connor Beauchamp and Jordan Gluck, playing well. “Our goaltending was excellent,” said Junker. “They were two tight games as was expected as they always are with Beaver Valley. It was nice to come out on top.” The weekend started off with a home tilt against the ‘Hawks in a game that would set the tone for the weekend. The Rebs picked up

late first period goals by Quinn Klimchuk, unassisted, and Stuart Walton, assisted by Jeremy McGregor and Brenden Heinrich, to take a 2-0 lead. Taylor Stafford brought the visitors to within one at 18:37 of the second, assisted by Ryan Edwards. Walton’s second goal, assisted by Dylan Bowerman and Travis Wellman, put the Rebs up by a pair a minute later. Wellman then gave the Rebs a commanding three goal lead at 2:10 with a power play marker assisted by Aaron Petten and Walton.

Nick Perez closed out the scoring at 12:11 of the third, assisted by Connor Brown-Maloski and Dan Holland. Saturday the teams travelled to Fruitvale for the rematch. Beaver Valley pounded the Rebels with 44 shots, but goalie Connor Beauchamp stopped every single one to pick up the win and first star honours. Scoring for Castlegar were Jamie Vlanich assisted by Hunter Jenerou and Diego Bartlett, and Walton, assisted by Riley Ostoforoff and J.R. Krolik. “Friday night

Gluck played excellent. He made some key saves early in the game to keep it 0-0,” said Junker. “We were able to score late and keep the lead. Saturday in Fruitvale, (Beauchamp) was solid all night. No real rebounds. He controlled the play. We were short-handed a number of times and he made some big saves. One that anyone who was there would remember, at the last minute we had a wide open net and he didn’t give up on it and made a huge save. Both goalies played extremely well.”

Despite back to back bruising battles with Beaver Valley, the Rebels had plenty left for Grand Forks on Sunday afternoon at the complex. Castlegar jumped out to a 5-1 lead after one period and cruised to the 10-4 bashing. Darren Medeiros led the home squad with a hattrick. Stuart Walton added a goal and three assists. Aaron Brewer and Bartlett each had a goal and two assists. Other Rebel scorers on Sunday were Petten, Wellman, Kane Roberts and Vlanich. Jordan Gluck stopped 24 of 28 GF shots in net for Castlegar. “With the big rivalry against BV there was a concern of a letdown against Grand Forks,” said Junker. “Tired legs being the third game of three days and playing a non-play-off team; there is a tendency to do that (letdown). Grand Forks is playing much better lately and they’re not an easy opponent. We got into some penalty trouble and let them back into the game...

Hearts Gone Wild sells out for Hospice Society

Craig Lindsay

Castlegar News Reporter

With young hearts and older hearts alike checking out the chocolates and fashions, the Hearts Gone Wild fundraising event was another successful venture by the Castlegar Hospice Society. The event, which was hosted by Chances Gaming

Centre on Saturday, was a complete sell out and raised nearly $1,500 for hospice. “It was a grand time had by everyone,” said Suzanne Lehbauer, executive director of Castlegar Hospice Society. “We sold out of every one of our 150 tickets. “It was a fun evening filled with chocolate, champagne, a

lingerie fashion show by Fashion Foundations and more chocolate.” There were several prizes up for grabs at the event. The biggest winners of the evening were Charity and Dared Szeles who won airfare for two to Vancouver courtesy of Pacific Coastal Airlines. Hearts Gone Wild was the first Valen-

tine’s Day weekend event for Hospice and after the success of this year’s event will become an annual occasion. “We’re definitely going to be doing it again next year,” said Lehbauer. “People thought it was just fantastic. It was so much fun. “The chocolate fountain and all the desserts were just

It won’t be as soon as hoped by many, but Castlegar may still be included for new WestJet turboprop service sometime in 2013. A number of B.C. communities got the announcement on Monday that WestJet will commence service with it’s new “Encore” brand, those included Fort St. John, Nanaimo, and Victoria/Vancouver. by choosing to launch the service in the west. Communities across the land had indicated a desire to be chosen. Mayor Lawrence

Chernoff said he remains confident in the pitch made back in June 2012 by a committee including himself, touting the eligibility of the West

Kootenays for the new service. Asked if he was disappointed by Monday’s news, the mayor said, “Absolutely not. There’s another round

coming later this year. They (WestJet) say they have another five announcements… for five more cities. No, we’re not out of the running by far. It’s really great because they moved west.” A response to an email sent to WestJet’s media department had not arrived as of press deadline, but Castlegar’s top elected official was customarily upbeat on the issue. “I think it’s only a matter of time,” he concluded, “before it gets here.”

Anyone who’s not invigorated at this time of year might be related to Rip Van Winkle, and that’s okay, they’re just missing out on a lot of the action and interest that’s picking up almost everywhere someone may care to look. Family Day is behind us, hockey in particular is hitting the apex and expecations are high in all kinds of levels from pee wee to collegiate. Sports fans in Castlegar are serious and they’re being rewarded this season with the KIJHL Rebels and BCIHL Saints dominating their respective circuits. No, it’s not the NHL but many would say, using desire and intensity as measuring sticks, it’s better. One thing’s certain, love it or hate it, when the gloves are dropped in a junior hockey game there’s nothing minor-league about what follows. It’s the price these young men are willing to pay for their teammates. Soon there will be playoff action at the Castlegar Community Complex and that means a packed house... children to seniors... all showing up in support of their squad. So what if they may not be a hardcore hockey fan... their friends and relatives probably are and that’s where they’ll be. Is the snack bar at the complex among the top dining destinations east of Vancouver? Or does it just seem like it when the home team is in action? Whatever the case, reservations are not required, just a game ticket. We want to hear from you.

Spots in Time - Gord Turner

Valentine sweets with a twist Recently, I was watching a re-run of the 1970s “Happy Days” television program. In that session, Mrs. C was telling a story about the time Mr. C was courting her and bought her a five pound box of valentine candy. Mr. C calmly declared that he never ever bought her any valentine candy. And I say, why not? It’s only a few times a year that we buy gifts for our spouses, our partners, or our lovers. So, why not on Valentine’s Day? Valentine’s is a particularly good time for buying a gift because the focus is on love. For a day or two, you get to think about your loved one in a distinctly different way. So, besides a five pound box of chocolates in a heart-shaped box, I’ve thought of a few different gifts as possibilities on the day of love. In the past, I have usually given valentine chocolates or flowers. But this year, I want to do some lateral thinking and move outside the chocolate box and beyond the flower vase. I was thinking we could set up a little treasure hunt for our cherished ones. We could give a little gift of one or two foil-wrapped chocolates on the 14th, and with it would be a note Craig Lindsay Reporter

for the next little gift—and so on. The final note would lead to a special gift hidden in her lingerie or his boxer shorts drawer perhaps. For heaven’s sake, don’t hide her gift in the laundry basket or his gift beside the snow shovel. When is the last time you wrote your partner a love note? Way back in your courting days? Twenty years ago? So why not buy some expensive notepaper and recreate one of the love-notes you once wrote when she or he was your “dearest” or “darling.” Alternately, you could write a love letter telling him or her what you love about them now. Using email or texting a message doesn’t count, but go for that if you’re shy about using notepaper. Remember, you need to say some of the love words that once flowed easily from your lips. Giving a gift of a trip on that special day could spin off into additional pleasures. If you’ve often talked about a trip to a Caribbean paradise and never got around to it, here’s the chance to rekindle your love. heart-shaped box. A brief overnight trip to Ainsworth Hot Springs would work just as well for the love-dance to enter your partner’s eyes. A gift a friend of mine gave to her hubby on Valentine’s Day was the promise of a bubbly bath together. She gave him a special erotic card with a handwritten note about the “let’s bath together” idea. Along with the card were scented soap bubbles and a splendid bottle of champagne. Before she let him into the bath area, she lit candles and told him to leave the lights off. Another friend of mine asked his partner to play hooky from work on Valentine’s Day as he had a surprise for her. He took her to a massage parlour where he had booked full-body couple massages for the two of them. He told me it was the most exciting thing they’d done for awhile. Unfortunately, he kept falling asleep. If you and your partner have children, a neat gift could be a lock for the bedroom door. And when you’re hidden away comfortably ensconced in your lover’s arms, then you can taste chocolate lip to lip. Happy Valentine’s Day! Sandy Leonard Production

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Time to pick it up The Millenium Poopway aka “The watch your step walkway” is potentially one of the nicest features of Castlegar. Unfortunately it is so full of poo there that I no longer take my dog for fear of illness. At her advanced age the immune system is less strong, mine too. The south parking lot hasn’t been stocked with pick up bags since November. I stopped by city hall to ask that bags be stocked at the park but have not seen any there yet. Maybe handy bags and trash bins won’t make people pick up but at least provide means and incentive. The walk along Nelson Lake front is equally bad or worse. The Vancouver Sun ran a great article on why it is so important to pick up after our dogs.

The article (originally taken from Maple Ridge Times) was published Sat. March 24, 2012 in the Breaking News section page A7 titled: “Cases of potential fatal canine disease have spiked, vets say.” Why is picking up important? Parvovirus is on the rise and it kills dogs, especially puppies. “In outdoor conditions parvovirus can withstand freezing and last up to seven months in the environment. The resistant bug can live for months under the right conditions it has been known to survive on rugs, furniture, even food containers.” Having your dog vaccinated each year and picking up after your dog will aid in preventing this potentially lethal virus from spreading. Our cherished older dogs are more at risk because of their weak-

ened immune systems. Humans are at risk too. According to the Mayo Clinic web site; “Parvovirus infection is a common and highly contagious childhood ailment — sometimes called slapped-cheek disease because of the distinctive face rash that develops. Parvovirus infection also has been known as fifth disease because, historically, it was one of five common childhood illnesses characterized by a rash. Picking up after your dog is not only a regulation under local bylaws, it is the responsible thing to do as a pet guardian and a member of the community. Like most things that are really important it’s simple and it only takes a moment of conscious thought and action. -Deborah Wilson, Castlegar

Pass Creek Road - a mess! Concerned residents of Pass Creek have been meeting to share views of the condition of the road which is considered hazardous and in urgent need of an upgrade. Traffic on the road has increased as the population has expanded while the road upgrades have not kept pace and have been piecemeal at best. School buses with approximately 70 riders per day, emergency vehicles, and logging trucks compete for space on what many consider a substandard road. In the past year the Pass Creek Fire Department expressed concerns to the Regional District about the slow pace and quality of repair work to Pass Creek Road; that repairs were completed in a ‘band-aid’

fashion; and noted the danger for Pass Creek Fire Department truck/crew trying to negotiate parts of the road when meeting oncoming traffic. The lack of room for pedestrians makes it very dangerous to walk, cycle or horseback ride. Communication has been opened with Ministry of Transport and Highways and some information sharing has taken place. If you feel you share the above concerns, petitions to sign will be located at the Pine Tree Market, Johnny’s Grocery and Gas, Mohawk, Curves, the Castlegar Recreational Complex and Kootenay Liquidators. If you travel Pass Creek Road for family, personal or business reasons sign the petition — however the petition can only be signed once. On behalf of concerned residents, – Laurie Paulsen, Castlegar

Castlegar chartered accountant honoured submitted

VANCOUVER – Castlegar’s Jack Yolland, FCA has been honoured with a fellowship by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia (ICABC). The fellowship (FCA) designation is awarded to chartered accountants for contributions to the community and service to the profession. Jack Yolland became a CA in 1949, and joined Campbell, Shankland and Imrie as manager of the firm’s office in Trail. In 1960 he

became the firm’s senior partner, and brought in two new

partners to form Yolland, Soligo & Byers. The firm now continues as Soligo & Associates. In 1969, Yolland accepted a teaching position in Selkirk College’s business administration (BA) department, and for the next 18 years he taught accounting and other business courses—the exception being a year’s leave in 1975, when he completed his MBA from the University of Western Ontario. He received an Excellence in Teaching Award from the College in 1982, and retired in

1989. Notably, while serving as BA department chair from 1979 to 1984, Yolland obtained approval for Selkirk’s accounting courses to qualify for the CA and CMA designation programs. Throughout his career, Yolland was committed to representing CA members in the B.C. Interior, and for over 17 years served on several ICABC committees. He also volunteered with the Interior CA Club and the Okanagan and Kootenays CA Clubs. In the community Yolland has been a

charter director of the Kootenay Society for Handicapped Children in Creston, and helped develop the Trail Youth Hostel. He was also a member of the Trail Rotary Club for 20 years, organized tax clinics to support local seniors, and contributed to the Rossland Light Opera, both onstage and off. Today, Jack continues his membership with Castlegar Senior Citizens, his 22 year role as a “Snow Host” at Red Mountain Resort, and his 25 year involvement with the BC Seniors Games Society.

MP takes part in Russian mission CRAIG LINDSAY Castlegar News Reporter

Southern Interior MP Alex Atamanenko returned to Castlegar recently after a week in Russia as a member of the Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum. Atamanenko was one of 26 Canadian delegates to the forum which took place in Vladivostok from Jan. 27-31 and included 328 participants from 23 different parliaments throughout the world . “There’s an organization called the Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum which encompasses some 28 countries of the Asia Pacific region and they meet on an annual basis,” said Atamanenko. “This year the meeting was held in Vladivostok in the far east of Russia. Our leader Tom Mulcair asked me if I would be willing to be one of the representatives of our party on this inter-parliamentary group.” Being able to speak Russian was a big advantage for Atamanenko during the mission. Also on board for the forum from Canada were two members from

4.3125” x 4” www.castlegarnordic.ca Southern Interior MP Alex Atamanenko alongside Senator JoAnne Buth at the Asia-Parliamentary forum in Vladivostok, Russia last month. Submitted

Atamanenko’s NDP party, one from the Liberals, three from the Conservatives and three senators. “This was new to me. I’d never done anything like this before,” he said. “The agenda was basically official greeting. We were hosted by the equivalent of the Russian Senate. There was an opening ceremony with greetings from a representative of Russian leader Vladimir Putin. We then broke off into plenary sessions.” The delegates discussed several important topics including political and security matters, economy and trade, and regional cooperation. “During these plenary sessions on these topics, countries put

up a speaker to speak on an issue that normally reflects their government policy,” said Atamanenko. “There were also countries that before hand prepared resolutions.” Adopted resolutions included those relating to combating terrorism, drug trafficking, human trafficking and organized crime; the middle east process; and the middle east peace process. Also attending the meetings were representatives from Aghanistan, Kazakhstan, and the United Nations who attended as guests. “It’s hard to measure what the outcome is,” said Atamanenko. “There’s the package of resolutions that will be given to

each country. It could be reflected in the policies of governments. I think the biggest thing is that you have parliamentarians from 28 countries meeting and talking and sharing information whether it’s in the official sessions or the break-up groups or socially during the cultural events. I think it’s a really good thing. It builds bonds. There are people here who have been going to these things for years.” To illustrate his point, Atamanenko relays the story of meeting a parliamentarian from Mongolia who is coming to Canada this year. “I’m hoping to maybe host him in Ottawa,” he said. “To keep in contact. So that’s great.”

Hearing tests don’t hurt. If you need the TV volume louder, feel confused at parties, ask people to repeat themselves often, shy away from meeting new people because you might not understand them, have trouble hearing on the phone...You may have a hearing problem. Get it checked soon. Brain injury is the greatest killer and the greatest cause of disability under the age of 45, surpassing all other causes. You don’t have to lose consciousness to sustain a concussion which causes a change in the chemistry within brain cells which can impair brain function. Don’t take a “knock in the head” for granted. Even a mild brain injury can last a lifetime. Get medical help right away. To discourage Australians to quit smoking, the government started mandatory new packaging law on Dec 1 last year. The packages are blank on the back and have anti-smoking messages on the front like “Smoking causes blindness” or “Smoking causes cancer” with appropriate graphic pictures accompanying them. The price of a pack of 25 in Australia is around $20....Another motivation to quit. Historically, people died from maladies we don’t hear much of today. Everybody likes, and needs clean stuff… clothes, of course… but even the items you’d never dream of trying to put in a washer and dryer are crying out for a cleaning treatment too. How do you suppose fine jewelry and specialized instruments get a first rate cleaning? Chances are it’s the kind of unit Maryann and Richard Cooney are bringing in to Soap & Suds Laundromat in the Kootenay Crossing shopping centre. The couple who has just taken over the business is investing in a high-end piece of hardware to add to the appeal of the facility. the Castlegar area are unbelievable. This is the unit for that large assortment of items that are, otherwise, a problem to clean. “This will allow us to go above and beyond… offering our customers more than the regular washers and dryers,” said Richard at the spotless enterprise last weekend. “One of the biggest things we’ll be doing is (window) blinds. It’ll do pretty well any object that you can’t put in a washing ma-

chine… like skates.” Other candidates for the ultrasonic treatment are items so dirty you wouldn’t want them in a regular machine, your own or otherwise – firefighters’ turnout gear is an example… hockey and other sports gear, too. “Sometimes firerestoration companies have them. They’re just a pain to clean but this will do it in a heartbeat.” The idea is not new, in fact Richard pointed out that various auto repair shops have smaller versions of the unit for cleaning auto parts, like pistons… rings… etcetera, with a solvent. “Ours is used with a water-based detergent.” Remember Soap n Suds when you have a specialized need for cleaning, and also when a modern and smooth-running traditional washer and dryer meets your needs. Provincial

LNG ‘Prosperity Fund’ launched

FEBRUARY 14

PUZ Z LE C ROS S

TOM FLETCHER Black Press

VICTORIA – Premier Christy Clark kicked off the preelection legislature session Tuesday with a pledge to establish a new fund from natural gas exports to support social programs and pay down debt. The main purpose of the “British Columbia Prosperity Fund” will be to pay down debt, starting in 2017 when the first liquefied natural gas facilities begins to ship LNG for export from the northern coast to Asian markets. It will be funded by a new tax on LNG exports, as well as corporate taxes and natural gas revenues. The new fund is patterned after Alberta’s Heritage Fund, set up decades ago as a legacy for Alberta’s oil and gas revenues. The B.C. fund would receive an estimated $100 billion from LNG revenues over 30 years, based on an assumption of five LNG production facilities exporting gas from the KitimatPrince Rupert region. The plan was presented in the throne speech delivered Tuesday by Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon, to open a four-week legislature session leading up to the May 14 provincial election. The key task for the B.C. Liberal government in that session is to pass legislation returning the provincial sales tax to B.C. effective April 1, and the speech hinted at relieving that tax as one use for the new fund. “Whether it is eliminating the provincial sales tax, or making long-term investments in areas like education or vital infrastructure that strengthen communities – these are the kinds of opportunities the B.C. Prosperity Fund can provide,” the speech says. The government

estimates that if B.C.’s LNG mega-project develops as expected, and all of the fund’s revenues are directed to debt reduction, B.C.’s $56 billion debt could be paid off within a decade. The prov-

ince currently pays about $2.5 billion a year in interest on the debt. There has been a rush of international investment interest in northeastern B.C.’s shale gas de-

posits. Companies include Mitsubishi Corp., Shell Canada, China National Petroleum Corporation and Petronas, a transnational gas player owned by the government of Malaysia.

Entertainment Van Django Quartet has intense musical experience to share SUBMITTED

An exciting foray into a dynamic genre is being made available to music lovers in Castlegar and the West Kootenays. On Sunday, February 24 the Kootenay Gallery presents the Van Django Quartet as part of the TD Bank Sunday Concert Series. Van Django is an acoustic string ensemble made up of four of Canada’s most talented and eclectic musicians; violinist Cameron Wilson, guitarist Budge Schachte, guitarist/ cellist Finn Manniche and bassist Brent Gubbels. Van Django’s music is punchy, driving

and rhythmically inventive, combining a wealth of musical influences while maintaining their roots in the gypsy jazz made famous by the 1930’s Quintet of the Hot Club of France.

“Attending a Van Django concert is the most fun you can have sitting down with your clothes on.” Nick Lehr, Djangofest Northwest Since the group’s formation in 1998, they have toured extensively in Canada as well as international forays to the USA and

Europe. The group has had repeat performances at Djangofest Northwest (DFNW) in 2008-2010 sharing the stage with gypsy jazz luminaries such as the John Jorgenson Quintet, the legendary gypsy jazz guitarist Romane and his group and the Marc Atkinson Trio. Perhaps Nick Lehr, director of Djangofest Northwest, summed it up best describing Van Django when he said: “In an increasingly crowded niche, Van Django is a standout act. With a clever mix of contemporary standards, classical ditties, rock homages and solid originals they effortlessly whip

the audience into a joyful frenzy. “Attending a Van Django concert is the most fun you can have sitting down with your clothes on.” This concert will take place at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, February 24 at the Kootenay Gallery located adjacent to the Doukhobor Discovery Centre on Heritage Way across from the Castlegar Airport. Tickets are to be sold at the door for $15 general admission and $12 for Kootenay Gallery members. For more information call 250-3653337 or visit www. ko ot e n ay g a l l e r y @ telus.net

Growing up in Castlegar, Dallas Sauer dreamt not of playing in the NHL, but instead performing on the silver screen. The 21 year-old is currently in the third year of a three year program at Studio 58 at the Theatre Conservatory at Langara College in Vancouver. “I didn’t start sacrificing sports for it, committing to acting, until I was in grade

10,” he told the Castlegar News. “In grade 4 at Kinnaird Elementary I had a teacher that had us perform dramatic scenarios in class. That was what really got me started. I remember we did improv scenes where the guys dressed up as girls and the girls as guys. She (Mrs. Walter) was my biggest inspiration.” Sauer and his classmates are currently performing the Broadway musical “Spring Awakening”

said. “So our school was really lucky to get the rights to it because it’s such a big show and our school d o e s n’t have a ton of money. Dallas Sauer on stage in Vancou- It’s going ver. is about the coming of age of the characters. Sauer plays Moritz Stiefel, an angst-riddled German teen who is just beginning to learn about love and life. “When the singing starts it becomes very contemporary,” Sauer said. “We do punk rock songs and such. It’s about the characters venting and getting everything out that they can’t get out in society in 1890s Germany because it’s so repressed.”

The three week run of the play finished up on Feb. 24. Sauer will graduate in April after performing an original one man play which is compulsory for all students. “It’s been a blast,” he said. “It’s the most fun time I’ve had doing theatre in my life.” Upon graduation, Sauer will be looking at hiring a film agent and getting into movies. “I’ll start working my butt off auditioning for films and stay

creating theatre with all the contacts I’ve made at this school.” Sauer appears in the local film The Change Agents which will be playing at the Brilliant Cultural Centre on Feb. 16 with doors opening at 6 p.m., show at 7. I haven’t even seen it yet because it hasn’t appeared in Vancouver, but it’s supposed to be really good, says Sauer. “The director has submitted it to the Vancouver and Toronto Film Festivals.”

Local artist launches studio specializing in decorative concrete SUBMITTED

Winlaw, BC – Local artist Brett Pope is officially launching Molded Stone Studio to fill a demand created by the design trend towards

decorative concrete in the West Kootenays. Located in Winlaw, Molded Stone creates one-of-a-kind functional concrete pieces with artistic and sculptural intention

for home owners and commercial applications. Local materials, sand and aggregates, primarily quartz and granite, are used for the studio’s unique pre-casting tech-

niques. “We create beauty in the home in the form of functional, every-day objects like bathroom vanities, fireplaces, furniture, stair-treads, architec-

tural details, countertops, and commercially in the form of front desks, bars, wallpanels, front entrance areas, and water features,” says lead studio designer Brett Pope.

Graduating from the Kootenay School of the Arts in 2000 majoring in Mixed Media and Bronze Casting, Pope has 16 years of experience working with three

dimensional forms using sculpture and assembling found objects, in addition to experience in construction doing foundation work to roofing. Prior to launching the studio Pope spent the six years focussing on the uses of decorative concrete and training under Fu Tung Cheng – one of the founders of the decorative concrete movement. Concrete features offered by the Molded Stone Studio are influenced by Cheng’s unique knowledge base. For example, the integration of back splashes, false fronts, sinks, drain boards, trivets, inlays and other personal details into the functionality of day-to-day objects. “Molded Stone Studio is excited about new applications which are now coming onto the market for use in pre-cast concrete projects,” says Pope. “One recent revolution in decorative concrete is the availability of lightweight concrete.” Known in the industry as Decorative Fibre Reinforced Concrete or Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete (DFRC / GFRC), this product permits largescale pieces without the usual seams that would normally be necessary due to weight constrictions. “We gave Brett some objects that we wanted to be part of the countertop and we were so pleased with the innovation and creativity around how he integrated them what he came up with was really awesome,” says Chloe Sage. “We were able to incorporate accents into our countertop that made it into an original piece of art that is functional and inviting to the touch,” Dale Johnson. Visit Molded Stone Studio’s online portfolio for a glimpse into the stunning possibilities of customized concrete design at www.moldedstone.ca.

A Tale of Two Viewpoints

Job numbers holding strong over Jan. ‘12 Govt. of BC submission VICTORIA - Despite an overall national drop in employment, primarily in full-time positions, British Columbia’s economy remains stable. As British Columbia starts the new year, most of its regions are recording steady job gains over this time in January 2012. Employment is up from a year ago in the Vancouver Island and Coast region by 11,200; Lower Mainland/Southwest by 10,600; Kootenay by 1,800; Cariboo by 1,100; and the Northeast by 1,100. Declines are recorded in the Thompson Okanagan and the North Coast Nechako regions. B.C.’s average hourly wage rate in January was up by 2.2 per cent compared with

January 2012, moving B.C. to third in Canada behind Alberta and Saskatchewan. The average hourly wage in the province now stands at $24.28. Employment among youth (aged 15-24) increased in January by 1,700 jobs. Men (over 24 years old) also fared well by adding 4,400 positions. The forestry, fishing, mining and gasextraction sector continues to experience steady growth over this time last year showing a growth of 5,100 jobs. In addition, the professional, scientific and technical services are up 11,400 from last year. Since January 2012, B.C. has added 1,800 jobs, as a result of a gain of 31,900 fulltime positions combined with a loss of 30,100 part-time positions.

2012 Year in Review: • The British Columbia economy added 27,700 full-time positions in 2012, increasing overall employment by 17,700. Part-time positions declined by 10,100 over the same period (December 2011 to December 2012). • B.C. ranked fourth in Canada for full-time job creation behind the provinces of Quebec, Ontario, and Alberta from December 2011 to December 2012. • Of all the job gains made between December 2011 and December 2012, women account for the majority. Employment for women climbed by 14,700 while employment amongst males increased by only 3,000 over the same period.

Jobs Plan “a colossal failure” - Cummins

BC Conservative Party press release LANGLEY - “No amount of taxpayerfunded television advertising can hide the fact that Christy Clark’s ‘Jobs Plan’ has been - and is - a colossal failure,” John Cummins said on Feb. 8, responding to the newly-released Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey for January. “Over the last year, 15,500 British Columbians have been forced out of the province’s labour force - either seeing their jobs disappear, or giving up hope of finding employment,” the leader of the BC Conservatives observed. “It’s as if the entire populations of Comox - or of Prince Rupert, or Dawson Creek - over the last 12 months had simply disappeared from the work force.”

One year ago the number of British Columbians in the provincial labour force which is the combined number of employed workers, plus those actively looking for a job - stood at 2,467,400. Last month that number had dropped to 2,451,900. (All numbers are seasonally-adjusted.) The BC Liberal government has spent an estimated $15 million in recent months to advertise the alleged success of their economic and fiscal policies. However, in September 2011, when Clark unveiled her JobsIt’s Plan, the to numtime ber of British Columplace bians withyour a jobad! was 2,294,500. Today’s Statistics Canada report shows that the comparable number for January 2013 had grown to just 2,297,600.

Both Stanley Humphries Secondary girls teams were ungracious hosts to Grand Forks on Tuesday evening as the juniors won 5338 and the seniors picked up their second win of the season

49-43. For the juniors it was a slow start filled with plenty of missed shots in close against the Wolves. But the Rockers hung in and eventually pulled away with their strong rebounding and passing. Svetlana Hadikin led the team with 20 points and 15 re-

bounds. Rebekah Liszt added 12 points and six assists, while Rachael teBulte chipped in with seven points and 12 rebounds. “Our first quarter was a little rough. We didn’t have much of a lead,” said Liszt. “The last three quarters we stepped it up and

ended up with a good lead.” The Rockers had a short bench with only seven players available but everyone stepped up and contributed, said Liszt. “With the number of players we had our passing was pretty good and running our plays and helping each other,” added the grade 10 point guard. “Our defence wasn’t as strong as we’d like. We played okay man to man half court but we need to work on our rotations.” The seniors started slowly as well as they battled back and forth with an athletic GF team. Strong performances from Liszt with 19 points, Alyssa Christianson and Rachael teBulte with 10 each, would lead the older team to a 49-43 victory.

The win was the first league win for the senior girls team. Liszt and junior teammate teBulte were brought up to the seniors to give them six players against Grand Forks. The two found the pace a little quicker and the players a little bigger. With 10 minute quarters as opposed to eight minute quarters in junior, stamina definitely plays more of a factor at the senior level. “It was much more exhausting. There’s much more running,” said Liszt. “But it’s good. It helps us learn more things.” The key to the comeback win was patience and hard work, said Liszt. “We were down a couple. We just made sure we stayed on our checks and used the backboard when we shot.”

Saints topple visiting Vikes SUBMITTED

Selkirk College won its fourth consecutive game and moved closer to clinching their first B.C. Iintercollegiate Hockey League regular season title on Saturday, topping the University of Victoria by a 4-1 score at the Castlegar Rec Complex. Goals from Dylan Smith and Thomas Hardy gave the Saints a 2-0 lead after 20

minutes, while a power-play tally from Mason Spear extended the lead in the second. The Vikes got on the board with three minutes remaining in regulation when Eli Wiebe beat Selkirk starter Chris Hurry off a scramble at the top of the crease, but the Saints iced the win with an empty netter from Hardy. “Tonight wasn’t a great performance but we did enough to win,” says Saints head coach Jeff Dubois.

“The energy level wasn’t where we want it, but coming off a couple of big wins last weekend that was perhaps to be expected. We’ll want to get better heading into our final six games.” Selkirk’s next game is on Saturday versus Eastern Washington University at the Castlegar Rec Complex (7:30 p.m. faceoff ). The teams will complete the homeand-home series on Sunday at EWU in Cheney (3 p.m.)

Rebels recap Continued from P. A1

...after we had scored some first period goals. We eventually closed them out and it was the end of an important weekend for us. Definitely at this time of year is when you want to be coming together.” The Rebels finish off the regular season this weekend with a home and home against Nelson. Although the games are meaningless for Castlegar as far as inter-division standings go, you can bet they’ll want to send a message to the struggling Leafs. An-

other point, though, would capture first place overall in the KIJHL and home ice throughout the entire play-offs. The teams play in Castlegar Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the complex and Saturday in Nelson at NDCC at 7 p.m. Any questions about resting players for the play-offs

like his San Antonio Spurs counterpart Gregg Popovich are quickly dismissed by Junker. “We’re looking to win hockey games and end on the right note,” he said. “We’re not really looking at the standings. I know if we take care of our business the standings will take care of themselves. We want

to work on what needs working on. If we hope to be successful we’re going to be playing Beaver Valley or Nelson so this weekend is a big one. There are no more easy weekends. You try not to look too far ahead to the play-offs, but at the same time we need to get ready for Spokane.”

HAUGEN, Douglas January 22, 1938 – February 2, 2013 It is with heavy hearts that we have to say farewell to Douglas Gregg Haugen who passed away peacefully in his sleep. He was predeceased by his mother, Lilly Haugen (Wilson) in 2010. Doug’s love remains with his children, Charlene, Kim (Nick), Doug (Mercedes), his beloved Angelita and half siblings Doug, Jo-Ann and Dana Norris. He will be lovingly missed by his grandchildren Derek, Chris, Aliza, Elise and Michelle. He will be remembered by his former wife, Rozelie. Doug lived a full and rich life despite having suffered a spinal cord injury 43 years ago. Doug loved classic cars, participating in riflery in the BC Special Olympics and was known to have an insatiable appetite for watching the Barrett-Jackson Automobile Auction on TV. Doug will be remembered for his passions in life – family, boating, car shows and the lottery. A Memorial Gathering celebrating Doug’s life was held on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at 12:00 Noon at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Delta, BC, with a reception that followed. Doug’s burial took place at Boundary Bay Cemetery at 2:00 pm, 856 56 Street, Tsawwassen, BC. In lieu of flowers, if so desired, the family would appreciate donations be made in Doug’s memory to autonamiclaboratory@ICORD.org or krassioukov@ICORD.org, a world leading health research center focused on spinal cord injury. Condolences may be offered to the family at: deltafuneral.ca (go to obituaries and tributes). “We’re gonna miss that smile”. Delta Funeral Home (604) 946-6040

Ronald Oliver Staudinger Ronald Oliver Staudinger of Castlegar BC passed away peacefully Saturday February 2, 2013. Ron was born in Sylvan Lake Alberta on March 4, 1926 to Hilja and Onni Staudinger. Ron had the opportunity to experience several places to live as a young man as his parents lived in different places like Rocky Mountain House and Rossland, eventually settling in Castlegar. Of all of life’s experiences, Ron’s most passionate experience was meeting the love of his life, Vera. Ron and Vera were married in 1949. They were soul mates from the beginning until Vera’s passing in 2007. Ron attended school until grade 8 but life’s experiences taught him so much more. He served in the navy, at an early age, as a Submarine Detector. It was during the Normandy invasion that Ron was wounded. The scars were reminders both physically and emotionally. He saw the greatness in the country that he lived in and it was a reminder of why he served in the war and the scars were his Diploma and Graduation. After the war, Ron worked various jobs like taking samples at a mine in Uranium City, helping to build an oil refinery in Edmonton, working at a coal mine in Alberta (this was where he met Vera) and eventually working at Cominco, separating silver and gold. Ron had hobbies such as fishing, travelling, golfing and hunting. Ron enjoyed getting together with family and friends. Their home was always open to anyone who stopped by. Ron in survived by several family members who loved him and his other “family” at Talarico Place. Ron dedicated much of time to being at Talarico while Vera was there and then the family of caregivers at Talarico took care of him. Everyone is so grateful for the care that Ron received and a big thank you to all the staff, not just for the care but for the love they all showed towards Ron & Vera from their hearts. He was predeceased by his brother George. By Ron’s request, there will be no funeral service. Ron was a dedicated Legion member and also at his request, a get together was held at the Royal Canadian Legion, branch #170 in Castlegar where a toast was made in his honour. Cremation has taken place. Both Ron and Vera will be laid to rest together at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be sent to Talarico Place, 709 10th Avenue Castlegar, BC V1N 2H7. Sarah Greenwood of Castlegar Funeral Chapel in Care of Arrangements. “Until We Meet again”

Happy Valentines Day Ron & Vera together again in love.

Mary Plotnikoff Sadly the family of Mary Plotnikoff of Robson wishes to announce her passing at Castleview Care Centre on Saturday, February 2, 2012, blessed with 85 years of life. Mary was born in Trail on May 23, 1927 to parents Dorothy and John Lazareff. She met and married Bill Plotnikoff and they had 3 children, Dianne, Nadine and Gerald. Mary worked for many years as a receptionist for the local optometrist, Dr. LeRoy. She loved travelling, gardening, cooking, sewing, playing cards and spoiling her family. Mary was a lifetime member of the Auxiliary to the Robson Volunteer Firefighters and a member of the Robson Senior’s Group. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Bill, in 1964 and her daughter Dianne Plotnikoff in 2001. Left to mourn her loss is her daughter Nadine (Allen) Henne, son Gerald and grandchildren Travis (Shannon Neigel) and Alana Henne. Funeral Services were officiated by Ken Siemens at Castlegar Funeral Chapel on Thursday, February 7, 2013, with interment in the Robson Cemetery and lunch in the Robson Church. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Auxiliary to the Robson Volunteer Firefighters, c/o Sharon Taylor, Box 204, Robson BC V0G 1X0, or a charity of your choice. Mary’s family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Vasil and all the staff at Castleview Care Centre for the care and kindness they provided their mother during her stay there.

Rizzotti, Dixie RIZZOTTI Dixie (Nelson) was born on November 25th 1938 in Nelson, B.C. and passed away on February 2nd 2013 in the Trail Hospital after a lengthy illness. She is survived by; children Giovanni (Leona), Dwayne, Rocky (Colleen), Collene, Ricky, Monica, Correne Morrell (Randy), Ricardo; 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; as well as her sisters; Ardene Palumbo (Clarence), and Deniese Garray (Amil). She is predeceased by; husband, Johnny (19 days ago); Daryle (Son), brother Ralph Nelson (aka-Sparky). Dixie was born in Nelson, B.C. It was in Trail at age 17, that she met Johnny Rizzotti and they married on January 8, 1956. They lived in various places early in their marriage, then settled and lived in the Castlegar area the rest of their married life. Dixie was 57 years a devoted wife to Johnny. The biggest joys in her life were her 9 children. She loved to sew, to knit, to quilt, and best of all the loved to cook. Dixie was best known for those weekly spaghetti dinners every Sunday. You were always welcome. And you haven’t lived until you tasted one of her delicious pies. She will be dearly missed. The Rizzotti family would like to thank everyone for the love and support that has been shown to them through the past month of losing both Johnny & Dixie Rizzotti.
