Heeding a call to action

‘Amazing response’ to call for replica rail station sponsors, donors By Jennifer Lang A heritage railway station is gradually taking shape in Cloverdale, where volunteers and sponsors have been climbing on board what’s been dubbed the People’s Railway, set to launch this May. A recent sponsorship campaign for building materials, labour and cash to construct and complete Cloverdale Heritage Station has been an unqualified success, says Allen Aubert, secretary of the Fraser Valley Heritage Railway Society. The FVHRS has spent the past decade working to return an original B.C. Electric Railway car to the original line. Twenty four sponsors for the Cloverdale Station building project signed up, meaning virtually no more are needed at the moment – just a landscape supplier who could

provide conifers for hedging, topsoil and someone to dig it into the ground, Aubert said. “Everything else is pretty nearly spoken for. The actual response has been amazing.” Thanks to such generous support, the replica station will be solidly built, but will

also have the so-called extras, like heritage-style windows and doors plus otherwise budget-busting flourishes

that will make the building a showpiece in the historic Cloverdale town centre. He believes the sponsorship campaign has gone smoothly because the project sparks imaginations, particularly once construction began in late November, under some of the wettest skies imaginable. “It’s something to see and touch,” he said. “I guess seeing is believing for some people.” The walls are now up, the roof is on, as is the platform where passengers will board the weekend service – all volunteer operated – between Cloverdale and Sullivan Station at 152 St. and 64 Avenue. It’s part of an overall project in partnership with the City of Surrey and the Southern Railway of B.C., with the assistance of B.C. Hydro. Cedar shingles have spruced See INAUGURAL / Page 11

Mom wants province to cover IVF costs Money was an issue when the Busches sought fertility treatments, so Misty risked conceiving twins

The Busch twins were born prematurely.

By Jennifer Lang For Cloverdale mom Misty Busch, the hardest part of giving birth to premature twins was having to leave her babies at the hospital the end of every day, even though they were in good hands. Misty’s baby boy and girl were born with a low birth weight and feeding complications that required several agonizing weeks in the neo-natal intensive care unit.

“It was horrible leaving your babies at the hospital,” she says. The twins were born at just 33 weeks, after a difficult, high-risk pregnancy plagued with problems. Twins are more likely to be born prematurely, setting them up for a higher risk of complications and long-lasting health impacts such as developmental delay and cerebral palsy. Just 12 weeks after she’d conceived

Tests show smart meters WE HAVE MOVED! accurate, BC Hydro says NOW OPEN AT BRICKYARD STATION! Cases of higher costs mostly due to human error, catchup bills By Jeff Nagel BC Hydro officials say it’s extremely unlikely that smart meters are driving up the power bills of some households this winter. Smart meter program spokesperson Cindy Verschoor said testing has proven the new wireless meters to be extremely accurate. “Last year we had 169 customers who were absolutely convinced their meters were not reading accurately,” she said, adding Hydro pulled them out and had them tested at Measurement Canada’s facility in Burnaby. “Every single one of them came back as accurate.” Anyone can request such a test and watch as it’s conducted – the homeowner has to pay $100 if it turns out to be accurate, while Hydro covers the cost if it’s outside the accepted one per cent margin of error. In the last 18 months since smart meter installation began, Verschoor said, there have been six cases of smart meters malfunctioning, leading Hydro to adjust four bills downward and increase the other two. “It’s extremely rare,” she said, noting 95 per cent of BC Hydro’s 1.9 million customers now have smart meters. Verschoor spoke after Cloverdale’s Vernon Keller complained his bill doubled in the latest winter period now that he has a smart meter (“A Bad Case of Smart Meter Regret,” Feb. 7). He said he’d go back to an analog meter if he could. Keller said a friend with a camp-

Now, onto the story that has everyone talking. Dozens of people shared our Feb. 7 photo of crocuses blooming in Cloverdale with friends (especially those in Eastern Canada, where a major winter snow storm was brewing) via our Facebook page. “Yay!!” Exclaimed one commenter. “I loved February in B.C.,” added another. “This is the time of year when all the rest of you wish you lived in THE Vancouver. In May, H we will reverse that, however.” “The beauty of love,” added a third, in Russian! (Turns out there’s a translate option.) TH

Oil and water The ALR and the Port Authority are on opposite sides To the editor; Re: ‘Metro Wants Port Banned from using ALR Land,’ Feb. 7 In the movie Do The Right Thing, by Spike Lee, an Italian restaurant meets its maker when it takes on the largely black community in which it lies. In the end, the “right thing” is for the Italian owner to show some respect for the black community in which it exists by placing some local celebrities on the wall, to add to the currently Italian-only pictures. In Canada, while we largely claim we want to “do the right thing,” when it comes to the environment, often our political leaders fail to hear the calling. To wit: while a vast majority of Canadians recognize global warming is something requiring action, our federal government continues to give it lip service. Doing the right thing ends up being a smoke and mirrors game. And yet, now, Metro Vancouver is demanding the federal government “do the right thing” and rein in the Port Authority of Vancouver by limiting the power of the port to unilaterally proclaim land in

the Agricultural Land Reserve usable for industrial development. The Port Authority, having the power to side step the usual review process regarding ALR applications, has been saying all the “right things” about wanting to protect ALR land, yet its vice president for corporate responsibility Duncan Wilson seems to speak with forked tongue in saying; “The industrial land that’s left in the Lower Mainland is insufficient for the future of our economy.” “Doing the right thing” means not having it both ways. Something has to give. While our economy is driven by corporate development, in the end, without a safe and viable ALR our food base is unsustainable...without which, no amount of economic development will result in our society “doing the right thing.” Not for us and surely not for future generations requiring an environment in which the growth of food must be environmentally sustainable for our society to survive. ‘Ultimate’ volunteers lauded By Jennifer Lang Together, they logged more than 20,000 hours last year serving their communities at public events like the Cloverdale Rodeo and Halloween Costume Parade, along with helping deliver anti-crime programs that help make Surrey safer. And on Jan. 31, the Surrey RCMP and the City of Surrey held a special ceremony honouring the city’s “ultimate volunteers” – the 86 women and men who serve as auxiliary constables. Karen Summers and Jason Pooni, Auxiliary members based out of the Cloverdale/Port Kells District 4 community office, were among those recognized. Summers was honoured for her 20 years of service in Surrey, while Pooni received a provincial award for serving more than 500 hours. “Since the 1960s, officers in Surrey have had the special privilege of working alongside these dedicated men and women whose commitment to public safety is unmatched,” Surrey RCMP Chief Superintendent Bill Fordy said at the ceremony. Fordy described the auxiliary constables as an integral part of

the detachment’s crime reduction strategy. Their role helps strengthen the bonds with the community and encourages the public to get on board crime prevention initiatives. The auxiliary constable program in Surrey is the largest in the country. In 2012, Surrey’s auxiliary constables volunteered at 40 local events. A/Cst. Lelan Sheldan served an impressive 884 volunteer hours. Mayor Dianne Watts also had

Trying to pave the way for others From page one

sought help, Misty was one of the youngest patients seeking help at the fertility clinic at UBC hospital. Two prior tubal pregnancies meant it was inadvisable, possibly dangerous, for Misty to conceive through conventional means. In IVF, an egg is fertilized outside the body, and implanted. Determined to add to their young family, Misty underwent two rounds of IVF in order to conceive, an exhausting process and an expensive one. Like many couples struggling with

infertility, she and her husband opted to transfer two embryos at one time – in hopes of boosting the odds that the expensive medical procedure would be a success, even though the decision carries certain risks. Each attempt costs between $8,000 to $10,000 – with no guarantees that it will work, Misty says – and involves medical appointments, egg retrieval, and embryo transfer. The procedure isn’t presently covered by the province in B.C., but for Misty and Kevin, a young couple just starting out, it was worth it, even if the quest to conceive put other dreams like buying a house on hold. “I had the rest of my life to have a house,” says Misty. “I didn’t have the rest of my life to have a child. To me, it was a no-brainer. My drive to be able to have children was much more than it was to be a home owner at that moment.” Misty recently stepped forward to lend her voice to a campaign launched by the Infertility Awareness Association of Canada

calling on the province of B.C. to publicly fund single embryo transfer IVF. “I consider myself lucky. I’m trying to pave the way for others,” she says. The province of Quebec has already adopted the policy, which proponents say will lead to fewer complications

Multiples are more than 17 times more likely to be pre-term.

- Infertility Awareness Association of Canada for mothers and babies, and will save the health care system money by reducing multiple births. A report commissioned by the association released last week suggests B.C. could save $78 million in healthcare dollars in the first five years if it agrees to fund single embryo transfer IVF. One in six couples suffer from infertility, says Misty, who points to the results of a survey the Infertility Awareness Association released in December that found 73 per cent of British Columbians agree the province

should provide public funding for IVF. Multiples are more than 17 times more likely to be pre-term, require a caesarean section, and need postdelivery care. With that in mind, Misty says if she had it all to do over again, she would choose to have one embryo

implanted during her IVF procedure. Some clinics make it standard practice, she adds. “They’re trying to get you a healthy baby, and a healthy pregnancy. A multiple pregnancy isn’t necessarily a success,” she says. At the time, the Busches didn’t have tons of money to keep “throwing into this” so they decided – as do many other couples trying to conceive through IVF – to have more than one embryo implanted at one time. “I decided to put back two embryos based on the fact of how expensive it was,” she explained. “We’re talking eight to 10,000 dollars per try.” The provincial government so far says funding IVF isn’t in the budget, but she remains hopeful that will one day change. “The government’s concern is what these procedures will cost and taxpayers are asking why are we pay-

ing for people to have children.” By creating more awareness around the issue, she hopes the public will realize it makes financial sense and is the right thing to do because infertillity is ultimately a health issue affecting so many. It’s been five years since those harrowing days and nights when the twins were born. Now five, they are healthy and happy. For the past three years, Misty has co-led an infertility support group in Ocean Park. They meet at the library in Ocean Park every third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. “I find we’re a very unique group. We have a place for people to come and talk. We also give them the resources to deal with their infertility.” Along with peer support, participants find resources, and learn from guest speakers – from reflexologists to Chinese medicine practitioners and, recently, a reproductive endocrinologist. When she was going through IVF treatment, Misty says she’d look at a photo album of success stories in the medical lobby at UBC. Knowing that it had worked for other people gave her hope. Providing hope to other couples is an important aspect of her work at the infertility support group. “For these women this is very painful. For husbands, too. It’s heartbreaking.”

Pay raise for bus drivers Coast Mountain Bus Co. drivers and other unionized staff will get a four per cent pay increase over the next two years under a new contract ratified last week. The three-year deal provides no retroactive wage hikes for the first year – the old contract expired last March – but gives two per cent raises in 2013 and 2014. The new collective agreement was ratified in an 88 per cent vote by members of two

Canadian Auto Workers locals who work at TransLink’s bus subsidiary. It covers more than 4,700 transit operators, mechanics, maintenance and SeaBus workers, running to March 31, 2015. CAW local 111 president Don MacLeod said the deal ensures no concessions for workers while complying with the net-zero government mandate for other public sector unions in the first year.

MacLeod said the union also negotiated improvements to bus scheduling running times to improve service and address its concerns about pass-ups, overcrowding and lack of night bus service. He said the union will continue to work with TransLink to reduce fare evasion as well as violent attacks on bus drivers. The annual pay increases will add at least $6 million in each of the next two years to

Rolland rocks the USA By Jennifer Lang Surrey’s MacKenzie Rolland is back from a recent varsity lacrosse event in Oregon where her team – the Devils – were the talk of the tournament. And not just because they were the only Canadian team at the University of Oregon event. Thanks to an undefeated 11-game record she credits to teamwork and strong defence, the Devils were able to win the varsity championship title at the almost all-American event. The success is sweet for Rolland, a Grade 12 student who’s played boy’s box lacrosse for most of her career, and only re-

cently made the switch to girls’ field lacrosse. Playing midfield in Oregon, Rolland was a major contributor on the scoreboard as she made her third appearance at the tournament. The Canadian team was comprised of nine players from Maple Ridge, Ladner, Port Coquitlam, Burnaby, New Westminster, and Rolland from Surrey. Each participating team received coaching from a current player on the U of O team. Rolland intends to pursue lacrosse at the NCAA level next fall, along with attending post secondary school.
