PCSS play a reminder of Anne Frank and Holocaust

Erickson group seeking history for new book BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff

BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

When the Prince Charles Secondary School drama club presents Anne Frank and Me from Feb. 21-23, the audience will be in for much more than an evening of entertainment — the play offers a stark reminder of not-so-distant history by showing the real-life story of Anne Frank and the Holocaust. “It’s a story of humanity, and how people have been mistreated,” said director and drama teacher Brooke Douma. “It was obviously wrong the way all those people were treated. It’s something that should never be forgotten so history doesn’t repeat itself.” Anne Frank and Me, which has a cast of mainly Grade 9 students, takes place in two time periods. It begins in 2013, with Nicole, played by Zoe Fenrick, and her friends studying The Diary of Anne Frank for school. “They’re learning about Anne Frank in school, and some of her friends don’t believe the Holocaust happened,” said Douma.

Five years into the project, it’s time to wrap up the information gathering and publish the Erickson history book, says organizer Sharon Brennan. Brennan met with a committee that includes a dozen or more volunteers last week to outline plans to finalize the project. “We keep getting the comment, ‘We didn’t know you were collecting information on the history of Erickson—we didn’t know what was going on,’” she said. That response has puzzled volunteers, who have participated in parade floats, held a two-day celebration at Erickson Elementary School, had an information booth at the fall fair and set up displays on Canyon Street during last year’s Blossom Festival. Perhaps it’s because Erickson has no community centre that it is difficult to get people to focus on activities in their neighbourhood, she admitted. The volunteer committee, which has amassed submissions from families during its time in existence, would like more details about families and, especially, on See ERICKSON, page 3

Erickson history book needs submissions

From Page 1 Erickson business history The conversation turned to listing businesses that some of the long-time residents remembered—Telford’s Store, the train station, The Spot, Fountain Grocery, Strawberry Inn, SunKee Farms, Ledbetter’s Garage, The Candle Factory, Truscott’s Honey Farm, Erickson Shopping Centre, Samuelson’s Cartage and Murphy Coal and Cartage among them. Poultry farms, mill and mine sites, a dray business, machine and welding shops, Rainbow Equipment, Littlejohn’s fruit stand and campground (which used to sell tulips, gladioli and apple boxes, one sharp mind recalled), Woods Dairy, Mensinger’s Garage and the

Bide-a-Wee Camp were all mentioned. “We do have a fair amount of information,” Brennan said. “But we are still trying to collect stories, photos and tales of interesting incidents.” “Did you know that Clark Gable once stayed at the Bide-aWee?” Creston Museum manager Tammy Hardwick asked, smiling. No one at the meeting did, and she promised to dig up more on the story. Other interesting stories are out there. Like the one about Erickson men commuting by train to work at a World War II prisoner of war camp near Lethbridge. After the war, a released prisoner built a home on property adjacent to that of one of the guards.

“We are going to accept stories until April 1st,” Brennan said. “And we would like to invite anyone interested in volunteering to join us to help gather information and do interviews.” Submissions, she said, don’t need to be polished prose, ready for print. Committee members will happily make sure the editing is done, if they can just get the information in written form. To make sure your family history is included, the following outline is presented as a guideline for submissions: •Family name? •When did it move to Erickson? •Where did it come from?

•How many people came? •What property was purchased and size of property? •Previous landowner? Amount paid for land? •Did the property have existing buildings? •What kind of work did family members do? •Who were the neighbours? •Did your family have school children? Where did they attend school? Who were their teach-

ers? •Any additional information? •How many of the family remain in the Creston Valley? •Where have other members gone? Submissions can be mailed to Sharon Brennan at Box 9, Erickson, BC, V0B1K0 or emailed to ericksonhistory@live.com. Photos can be dropped off at the Creston Museum and Archives.

Area B director John Kettle, who was recently re-elected to his second term as RDCK board chair, has been given another vote of confidence by the Kootenay East Regional Hospital District Board. As he enters his sixth year in the position, Kettle said he is grateful for the support. “I appreciate the support of my fellow directors in re-electing me as chair,” he said last week. “One of the big projects for which this hospital district has been advocating is a new intensive care unit for the East Kootenay Regional Hospital (in Cranbrook),” he said. “The board is focused on making this project happen and has committed $8 million as our 40 per cent share. I am looking forward to continuing our work with Interior Health on the ICU and other projects for the good of our residents.” Kettle said the hospital district has been lobbying for a new ICU by bringing in provincial cabinets ministers and showing them the aged facility. He credited Cranbrook MLA Bill Bennett for working with the hospital board to promote the project. “We always ask them, ‘Would you like to be treated here?’” Interior Heath has not yet approved the construction and Kettle said a decision was unlikely until after the provincial election in May. The KERHD taxes Kootenay area residents for a share of capital costs only, and Kettle said the announced $8 million portion will not result in a tax increase for 2013. “Now we await a response from Interior Health,” he said. “They have known about our commitment for six months now. We need this unit desperately.” Kettle said his board had also

Elkford Mayor Dean McKerracher has been re-elected as Acting Chair for a second term. “I thoroughly enjoyed my first term as Acting Chair and am looking forward to another dynamic year working with Chair Kettle and the entire Board,” says McKerracher. The Kootenay East Regional Hospital District provides up to 40 percent capital funding for acute care facilities in the region for equipment and facility construction and renovation. The Hospital District extends beyond the boundaries of the RDEK to include the Towns of Golden and Creston, and the portions of the Regional Districts of Central Kootenay and Columbia Shuswap surrounding those municipalities.

PUBLIC MEETING

Scam artists have been out in full force on telephones and the Internet recently, the RCMP learned last week. Last Wednesday, Creston police were brought into the picture when a local female reported she was the victim of an on-line “secret shopper” scam. She had signed on to an Internet invitation earlier, Cpl. Monty Taylor said on Monday, and received a cheque in the mail. “She said she took it to her bank and was told it looked legitimate, so she deposited it,” he said. Soon after, she was directed to send three of her own cheques via Western Union to New York addresses. As well, she was told to visit a Walmart store, buy $100 worth of merchandise, then fax some forms reporting her experience. When the complainant got a call from her bank that the cheque had bounced, she put a stop payment on her cheques, but some had already been cashed. Investigating officer Cst. Dave Skretting called several phone numbers associated with the scam. In one conversation, a female said she wanted to call him back using a blocked number, then hung up when he refused. In another call, a male with a thick accent said what he was doing was legitimate, then attempted to recruit Skretting into the scheme, saying he could make $10-20,000 a month. “You would be calling me ‘sir’, you would be making so much money,” he said. “We could work magic together.” The investigation continues.

From page 1 Following an accident, the setting shifts to 1942, where Nicole finds herself in a family resisting the Nazis. She eventually meets Anne Frank aboard a train headed for the Auschwitz concentration camp. With events such as those decades in the past, it’s more important than ever to make sure no one forgets. “The generation that lived through the Holocaust is starting to die off,” said Douma. “A lot of kids in today’s generation, and even my generation, don’t know who Anne Frank is.” “People should know about the Holocaust, because even though it was a horrific event, it’s part of our history,” said Fenrick. “The farther in time we get away from it, the smaller impact it has on people. … I believe that doing a play based on the Holocaust is a great way to teach people about it,

while adding humour and familiarity to it, as well.” Anne Frank and Me, by Cherie Bennet, had its Off-Broadway premiere in New York in 1996, and was adapted into a novel in 2001. It has since been a popular production for regional and community theatre groups — which is hardly surprising considering the impact the story has had on the cast. “The most important thing I’ve learned from this play is that no matter what hardships you face, the most important thing to remember is to have faith and never lose hope,” said Fenrick. “I also learned how important family is, and to treasure the time you have with them.” And it’s a show that will have an impact on people of all ages. “It’s a story about family, faith, hope and love that allows you to feel as though you are in another world,” said Fenrick. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors, available at Creative Fix, Black Bear Books, cast members and PCSS. Each performance begins at 7 p.m.

Tax credit eases caregiver expenses (NC)—Although being a caregiver to a loved one at home can be a rewarding and enriching experience, it can also be a serious challenge for any family— particularly financially. In 2007, Statistics Canada estimated that more than 2.7 million Canadians were providing eldercare to a friend or family member. Though some caregivers provide all of the support themselves, more than half of them also worked outside the home. To ease some of the financial strain on families, the federal government recently announced a new family caregiver tax credit (cra.gc.ca/ familycaregiver).This credit provides an additional amount of up to $2,000 for each of the following non-refundable tax credits: • spouse or common-law partner amount;

• amount for an eligible dependant; • amount for children born in 1995 or later; • amount for infirm dependants aged 18 or older; • caregiver amount. Although no tax credit can help caregivers be in two places at one time, and it does little to ease the demands of caring for a loved one on a day-to-day basis, still the tax breaks are welcome and available. www.newscanada.com

Making Your Mortgage Interest Tax Deductible Submitted by Dean Bala DLC Producers West Financial Your local Mortgage Broker For U.S. homeowners, mortgage interest is automatically tax deductible. But for Canadians, the write-off is not so straightforward. In order to make your mortgage interest tax deductible, homeowners must be able to prove that the money is being reinvested and is not being used for personal expenses. A properly structured mortgagecentric tax strategy has several key elements – the most important of which is a multi-component, readvanceable mortgage or line of credit. It’s best to have a single collateral charge with at least two components – usually a fixed-term mortgage and an open line of credit – that can track and report interest independently. This is absolutely essential under Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) rules and guidelines. Second, the strategy must employ conservative leverage-investment techniques – which is why a financial advisor must be involved in order to comply with federal regulations. The financial advisor should be a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) who is experienced in leveraged investing, and able to actively monitor a homeowner’s portfolio on an ongoing basis. Homeowners who opt for a taxdeductible mortgage interest plan make their monthly or bimonthly mortgage payments the same way they would when making any type of mortgage payment. The payments go towards reducing the principal amount of the mortgage and are then moved over to the line of credit as the mortgage is paid down. But in order to be tax deductible, the funds must then be transferred to an investment bank account, which can be done automatically by your CFP. Once the money is in an investment bank account, it can be reinvested and the money becomes tax deductible. Essentially, the homeowner is borrowing from the paid portion of the mortgage for reinvestment purposes. On average, a typical 25-year mortgage can become fully tax deductible in 22.5 years. If you have a rental property, you can also use this tax reduction strategy even further. When you receive your rent, you can then use

the funds to help pay down your personal mortgage. Once paid, the rental funds move to the line of credit and are then transferred to the investment bank account. They are then used to pay down the mortgage on the rental property. Using this method, it is possible to have your mortgage interest become fully tax deductible in only 3.5 years.

The ideal client Ideal borrowers for an advanced mortgage and tax strategy are typically professionals or other high-income earners who have a conventional mortgage (have at least 20% of the cost of the home to put towards a down payment) and have built up substantial equity. As high-income earners, their total debt-servicing ratio will be quite low and they will have excellent credit (700+ Beacon scores). These borrowers are financially sophisticated homeowners that are keenly interested in establishing a secure financial future and comfortable retirement. They also have good investment knowledge.

The risks The financial benefits of taxdeductible mortgage interest are indisputable and justify the risks to the right borrower. That said, a problem can arise if a homeowner spends the funds as opposed to reinvesting them. As well, any tax refunds have to flow through the investment cycle in order to realize the benefits of paying down the mortgage as quickly as possible – and making as much of the interest payment as possible tax deductible. Short-term financial risk is liquidity risk (sometimes referred to as cash flow risk). Cash flow risk addresses the possibility that interest rates will sharply drive up the cost of borrowing at the same time as markets falter, resulting in a negative client monthly cash flow for a brief period of time. This short-term risk is typically only prevalent in the first two to four years because, after this period of time, the homeowner has stockpiled enough equity through annual tax refunds that other liquidity options exist and the risk is fully mitigated. Liquidity risk varies widely based on the balance sheet strength of the homeowner. Highly qualified homeowners are easy to manage as these borrowers have no difficulty meeting the short-term cash flow demand should the need arise.

I don’t follow Alberta politics enough to know much about Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, but a recent CBC Radio interview left me admiring his honesty and pragmatism. I’m just a mayor, he said, and I shouldn’t even be involved in this argument. But the other levels of government are dropping the ball and no one is saying what needs to be said. Nenshi was talking about the polarized battle currently going on about the construction of oil pipelines. What made his comments stand out in my mind? He is the first elected official I have heard admitting there is an elephant in the room with regards to energy and natural resource extraction. We need to be aware, he said, that the oilsands contain a huge amount of fossil fuels that are in demand around the world, but eventually, perhaps sooner than we think, other forms of energy will supplant them and their value will plummet. Huh? Here’s a very bright man — academic, business and non-profit credentials teeming in his resume — and he’s basically saying that Alberta and Canada need to make hay while the sun shines, that today’s Canadian petroleum reserves just might be yesterday’s Dutch tulip domination. Believe him or don’t, but I think he deserves credit for adding an entirely new angle to the debate about the oilsands and the need for pipelines to help move the product to international markets. For a long time, I’ve been of the opinion that the headlong rush to

develop the Athabasca reserves was unwarranted. Within my own company I’ve often been the one to say that I don’t want to be the beta test lab rat — give me a product or ser-

This is the Life

Mild weather good for pruning

I hate to say it but the cloud cover in the valley over winter is really good for growing fruit. It moderates the winter temperatures. In cold weather, it traps in all the heat. Later in spring, it keeps the sun from warming everything up too fast too early. This helps protect the fruit buds over winter and helps increase spring pollination. It is ironic to me that we live so close to the sunniest city in all of B.C. — Cranbrook — yet starve most of the winter for the sun ourselves. You win some, you lose some. A lot of my neighbours are taking advantage of the mild winter weather to prune their orchards. We’ve already finished pruning our cherry orchard, so I can concentrate on the greenhouse and nursery end of things for the next few months. A few notes on pruning fruit trees for the folks who are unsure: Use freshly sharpened bypass style hand pruners and loppers. I like brands such as Felco or Corona for their quality and durability. They will make nice clean cuts that heal well. Hammer and anvil style pruners tend to crush the tree tissues when they cut. Keep a one-litre spray bottle of 10 per cent bleach solution handy to disinfect your tools between trees. Sturdy orchard ladders with three legs can be safely positioned on any

terrain. You may also need a sharp saw for cuts larger than 1.5 to two inches in diameter. When making a cut, look for the branch bark collar. This is the spot where the bark of the smaller branch

known as the scaffold growing vertically up and out in a vase shape. The umbrella-like form sees one main trunk growing up to a working height of anywhere from five to 10 feet and then three or four main branches (comprising the scaffold) growing out on a horizontal plane. The central leader forms use the main upright trunk as the scaffold, which allows for a much tighter tree spacing for use in high density orchards. All these shapes help take advantage of natural airflow and sunlight penetration to keep the tree and its fruit healthy and disease free. A good rule of thumb is to never remove more than 25 to 30 per cent of the tree’s wood in one year. By taking out older wood you encourage regeneration of younger wood, which a few years down the road will be more productive. It may take several years of pruning to get an older tree back into shape. After pruning, when the warm weather returns but before the blossoms are out, you should put a dormant spray on the fruit trees. This is often a mixture of dormant oil and lime sulphur, which helps to further control over-wintering insects and diseases. Evan Davies owns Beltane Nursery at 2915 Highway 3 in Erickson.

you are cutting off meets the bark of the larger branch you are leaving. There is a swelling of the bark and you will want to leave this intact, so it will heal quicker. If you leave a stub, it will take years longer to heal over. In general, we prune out any branches that are dead, diseased, crossing over and rubbing, growing back into the tree or growing straight up. Before starting, take a few steps back and look to see what form, if any, the tree has been pruned to before. Larger fruit trees are generally pruned to one of a few styles. They are the open vase, the umbrella-like form, the central leader or the modified central leader. The open vase has three or four main branches

Those with dogmatic beliefs are the problem To the Editor: (Re: “Israel conflict is spiritual”, Feb. 7 Advance) This will be my last submission on the Israeli/Palestinian issue as it was never my intention to start another religious war but Mr. Slimm’s very dogmatic views do deserve a response. The Hebrew Bible tells us that the land of Canaan, or land of Israel, was prom-

ised by God to the descendants of Abraham’s youngest son, Isaac. The Qur’an states that the land of Canaan was promised to all descendants of Abraham, including his elder son, Ishmael, from whom the Arabs claim descent. Neither Slimm nor I can say with any authority which belief may or may not be correct. The points I expressed in my letter (“Canada now appears to be pro-Israeli”, Dec. 13) were based on personal observation and experience. I have worked in Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan and Israel for varying periods of time and have made three visits to Jerusalem and the West Bank. I believe that I have a reasonably well-balanced view of what is going on in that part of the world. I have seen the day-to-day suffering of the Palestinian people and feel a deep sympathy for them, with the constant stopping, ques-

tioning and searching by Israel police while so-called Jewish settlers strut by, many of them with an automatic weapon slung over their shoulder. The relentless illegal expansion and construction of Jewish settlements in the West Bank has made an independent Palestinian state an impossible dream in my view and I feel certain that Israel has no intention of ever allowing one to exist. This slow but steady expansion and the hopeless living conditions result a steady flow of Palestinian refugees and ethnic cleansing is the end result. Does this make Israel a hardline nation? I will let you decide that question. People with dogmatic, uncompromising religious beliefs will never solve the Israeli/Palestinian problems because, in fact, they are the problem. A friend forwarded me this: “You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.” True, but you can “legislate” poor to become poorer and rich to become filthy rich. ing Wall Street into gambling casinos where taxpayers must reimburse sharks’ losses, and by fanning wars without reason, sanity or purpose (except for the greed). In 2012, the U.S. prosecuted Europe’s largest bank, HSBC for enabling Mexican drug cartels and al-Qaida terrorists to launder money. The outcome was a $1.9 billion fine, but not a single senior officer was criminally charged. Isn’t that mind-boggling? Would any of us get away with that? How about this: The filthy rich have some $27 trillion in offshore accounts, and the largest corporations pay little or no corporate tax. Another textbook example: In the U.S., the richest 0.01 per cent quadrupled their wealth in last two decades. There goes the myth that rich are job creators. They are, in fact, parasites, who, by the ways of exploiting, trickery and bribery, get one set of laws for us and another set for themselves. According to the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, about 95 per cent of $230 trillion of U.S. derivative exposure (worthless junk) was in hands of four major banks. Once the bubble bursts, those who trusted the fraudsters will lose everything. Now let’s explore the wheel hub of this all: What had Saddam Hussein, Muammar Gaddafi and Iran in common? You know part of the answer, oil, but did you know that Saddam started to sell oil for euros instead of U.S. dollars, Gaddafi wanted to sell oil for dinars and Iran is dumping the dollar and euro? That tells you one of the main reasons imperial vultures and their handlers were and are so desperate to change those regimes. Under the “bad” Gaddafi, electricity was free, loans had no interest, newlyweds got about $50,000 to start a family, and education and medicare were free. If a Libyan wanted to farm, he would get land, a house, equipment, seeds and livestock. If Libyans could not find education or medical facilities at home, the government funded them to go abroad. The price of gas was 14 cents per litre. Libya had no external debt and its reserves were $150 billion (likely stolen by now). If a Libyan was unable to get employment after graduation, the state would pay the average

A closer look at dead and decaying trees

Our landscape is forested with more than a dozen types of trees. Each species has its own special requirements for growth and each has its own physical features. Some, compared to others, grow slowly

moisture even long after the tree falls to the ground. Let’s consider a related aspect. Since poplar wood is soft, but heavy with moisture, the weak limbs break off readily in windstorms leaving an entrance for decay to enter the remainder of the branch or the tree trunk. An opening may soon develop, giving a woodpecker access to a potential nesting cavity. Ed McMackin After the woodpecker is done with the nest site, and live a long time, while oth- a chickadee or small owl may ers grow rapidly but compared make use of it. pileated woodpecker that had been occupied with a nearby dead grand fir tree. On examining the spot I discovered that the pileated had chiselled away nearly half of the tree trunk. At the next strong wind, I expect that rotted tree will come down. Then the decaying and recycling process will continue a little faster. Decay in a lot of trees quite often starts and proceeds faster at the base of the trunk, resulting in the whole tree coming down. There are boring insects that will infect the base of some small trees causing the affected part to break off. Water, wind, humidity, temperature, disease and plants all play a role in the growth and decay of trees, but I hadn’t before looked closely at the influence of bird foraging and nesting on the recycling process of tree nutrients. Neither had I considered a pileated woodpecker to take up the profession of being a “faller”, one who falls trees. The benefits of decaying and dying trees go on long after the trees are dead, still standing or fallen to the ground. Dead or dying trees are often cut down because they pose a hazard, but often cut down because they are deemed unsightly. But a standing dead or fallen tree may be a welcome sight to a woodpecker or other cavity nesting or insect foraging bird. About 2,300 juvenile white sturgeon were released into the Kootenay River near Creston last spring.

Endangered fish face another hurdle BY SALLY MacDONALD Cranbrook Daily Townsman

Scientists are still holding out hope for the endangered Kootenay white sturgeon after a three-year U.S. experiment failed to draw the fish upstream to where they could successfully spawn. The largest freshwater fish in North America, white sturgeon can grow to 12 feet in length and weigh up to 1,000 pounds in their 100-year life span. With an estimated 1,000 wild adult fish remaining, the Kootenay white sturgeon was listed as endangered in Canada in 2003, after nine years on the U.S. endangered list. Wild sturgeon are found in Montana, Idaho and B.C. and they spawn downstream of Montana’s Kootenai Falls and Montana’s Libby Dam on Koocanusa reservoir. The fish, which don’t begin reproducing until about age 30, have been in decline since the 1950s. “Although they were potentially declining in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, they were still reproducing, they just weren’t producing as large a year class. The last year class produced naturally was in 1974,” said Jason Flory, fish and wildlife biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Spokane, Washington. In 2008, biologists began spilling up to 35,000 cubic feet of water from Libby Dam into the Kootenay River each spring, timed to coincide with the sturgeon’s urge to spawn. The idea was to mimic the spring freshet the sturgeon experienced before construction of the dam began in 1965 under the Columbia River Treaty. “The intent was to coax the sturgeon to migrate upstream to spawn,” said Flory. After three years of spill tests, including two with naturally high spring freshets, Flory said, “it doesn’t look like we achieved the intended results.” Instead of spawning upstream of Bonners Ferry in a cobble and gravel-bottomed stretch of the river, which is believed to be the most suitable, the sturgeon are still primarily spawning with little success in silt-filled gravel downstream of Bonners Ferry. “The sturgeon are spawning; it’s just getting them to spawn in the right spots,” said Flory. Biologists will continue their work to encourage the sturgeon to

reproduce naturally, he went on, although the next step hasn’t yet been determined. “We haven’t figured that out yet,” said Flory. “We are working with our other partners and we are going to sit down and figure out what to do. We still have the volume of sturgeon water that we work with every year.” He added that they have not yet decided whether to continue spilling water from the dam each spring. But the future of the white sturgeon is not dire, thanks to a white sturgeon hatchery in Bonners Ferry, operated by the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho. Since 1991, the hatchery has produced about 200,000 white sturgeon, which are then released into the Kootenay River downstream of Bonners Ferry. Each year, some of those young fish are released into Kootenay Lake in the West Kootenay. In 2012, approximately 2,300 juvenile sturgeon were released in a special event in Creston, attended by First Nations members and elders, as well as members of the public. Kootenay white sturgeon are important both culturally and for sustenance to the Ktunaxa Nation. Last December, the Kootenai Tribe was given the green light to expand the existing Bonners Ferry hatchery, and build a new hatchery about 16 kilometres upstream where the Kootenay River and Moyie River meet. “The next generation of sturgeon will be entirely from the hatchery,” said Sue Ireland, director of the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho’s Fish and Wildlife Program. Each year since 1998, some fertilized sturgeon eggs spawned in Idaho are brought to the Kootenay Trout Hatchery near Fort Steele. They are cultured there for about a year before being released into Kootenay Lake. Thanks to the hatchery’s work, Flory said there is still hope for the Kootenay white sturgeon. “We do have the hatchery program, which is always going to provide the next generation of fish. We also have some habitat restoration work that the tribe is implementing. Those are targeted towards providing better spawning conditions for the sturgeon. And we still have some things we can try with the flows, to see if they work. So we are still hopeful,” he said.

In baseball parlance, the Creston Valley Community Housing Society is on third in its efforts to provide low-cost housing in this area. It got to first base when the Town of Creston agreed to donate land adjacent to Millennium Park on a long-term lease basis. Second base was reached with successful registry with the Canada Revenue Agency as a non-profit group with authority to issue taxdeductible receipts for donations it receives. The society has been mired at third for more than two years in its efforts to begin providing the type of decent affordable housing that, according to professional surveys, the area so badly needs. During that time, with the help of a generous donation from the Creston Valley Gleaners Society, the housing society commissioned the needs and demand assessment necessary to approach potential partners for financial assistance for the project. The assessment identified families — mainly single parents with children — who are now

paying more than they can afford for highly unsuitable accommodation as Creston’s highest housing priority. Success in providing them safe, affordable housing will benefit the community at large by making it easier for lowincome earners who provide needed services to make their home here. Now the society has its hopes on a home run: Columbia Basin Trust and B.C. Housing’s approval of an application for a grant when bids for such assistance are again invited within the next few months. An important part of that application process will be demonstrating strong community support for and involvement in the project. Demonstrating that the community will supplement the provincial grant with enough cash or other aid to make the project viable will allow Creston to realize the dream of making affordable family housing a reality. There will be a public meeting on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce. Everyone, especially those living in the area of Millennium Park, is invited to come and learn more about the society’s activities and needs.

Bison Brothers bringing own brand of western rock to Snoring Sasquatch SUBMITTED

Tim Ross of Wycliffe seems like a character one might find striding through the dusty trails of a Louis L’Amour western, and rightfully so. As a professional grasslands conservation contractor, Ross can say with a straight face that he’s one of the few people left in southeastern British Columbia who still earns his living on horseback. Long and lean, looking like the mischievous sandy-redhead nephew of Clint Eastwood during his spaghetti western days, Ross’s eyes are sharp yet smiling, and his wry grin is downright infectious. But you’ll find a hollow-bodied Gretsch electric guitar in his hands more often than a breechloading Sharps carbine, although with either of them he hits the mark dead centre. He and the Bison Brothers will play at the Snoring Sasquatch on Feb. 22. “This is our first time playing Creston,” Ross said. “We’ve heard lots of good things about the local support for the arts and music community, and we’re eager to bring our music to this side of the Kootenays.” Ross’s musical history is as colourful as his personal present. Active since 1980 in a series of larger-than-life roadhouse-rocker bands carrying such names as the Naked Crows and Blair and the Blairs (he can spin wild road tales for hours on end), Ross is a prolific songwriter who has rocked stages from Ontario to Vancouver and back with the educated lyrical earthiness of John Prine and John Hiatt, framed within the roots-rocking blister-country fusion pioneered by folks like Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds. Since the turn of the century, he’s been helming the Bison Brothers (which includes wildman bassist Ferdy Belland and drumming wizard Colin Righton) and has independently released three previous albums, Buffalohead (2005), Blue Sky Green Grass (2006) and Cowboy Museum (2012). Ross’s songs have received strong CBC Radio airplay and considerable critical acclaim. “We’re busy songwriting for the new album,” said Ross. “Lots of humorous working titles scribbled up on the whiteboard in our rehearsal space. This album will be more on the rocking side of things, whereas

Tim Ross (above) and the Bison Brothers will play in Creston on Feb. 22.

Cowboy Museum was more of a western album. It gets hard to pare it down to a workable album length when you realize you might have two dozen strong songs to juggle — but then again, if the Rolling Stones could make Exile on Main Street work, we might just have a double album on our hands before 2013’s through!” Just don’t call Ross a “country” artist, though; he might start squinting irritably, just like a gunfighter. “We’re not a country band, not in the current mainstreamradio sense of the term,” Ross

explained. “A western band, sure — we even have another set where we do old traditionals like Strawberry Roan and Streets of Laredo — but there’s a lot more influence in our songs from classic rock and rhythm and blues. When we get the engines fired up, we sound much more like the Georgia Satellites or the Mavericks than we do, say, Alan Jackson. But we’d like to end any confusion, so please come on out and see for yourself! We’ll debrief afterwards.” For tickets prices and showtime, visit www.snoringsasquatch.com.

Opera, Tristan und Isolde, playing at Creston library BY JULIE EWASHEN

Rene Kollo and Johanna Meier star in Tristan und Isolde.

Deutsche Grammophen

The story of Celtic lovers Tristan and Isolde will be presented on the big screen at Creston and District Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 23, courtesy of Deutsche Grammophen. The opera is in three acts by Richard Wagner. It was produced in Bayreuth, Germany, and will have English subtitles. The performance is conducted by Daniel Barenboim. Title roles are performed by tenor Rene Kollo and soprano Johanna Meier. Soprano Hanna Schwarz is Brangane, Isolde’s companion, and baritone Hermann Becht is Kurwenal, Tristan’s servant. Tristan und Isolde is set in the Middle Ages and begins with a ship carrying Princess Isolde from Ireland to Cornwall, England, to marry King Mark. She does not wish the marriage and scorns the prestige that the union would afford her. Her love for Tristan is revealed, misunderstandings ensue, and the conclusion is tragic. Tristan und Isolde features beautiful arias, love duets and a renowned prelude. The DVD belongs to Jasmine Lothien, a longtime fan and student of opera, who will introduce Tristan und Isolde. We know that operas are written by highly trained and highly intelligent musicians. Performers are required to demonstrate abilities in complex singing roles and dramatic acting. The Bayreuth production was staged and directed by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle and has received rave reviews.

Appreciation is extended to librarian Aaron Francis and assistant Gail Southall for researching possibilities of continuing opera presentations at the Creston library. Pre-viewing organization is also appreciated. There is no charge for admission. For more information, contact Jasmine Lothien at 250-4023262 or Julie Ewashen at 250-428-7097.

McRorie presenting electronic music show at Sirdar Pub SIRDAR PUB

McRorie is back at the Sirdar Pub on Feb. 15. He’s the definition of a oneman-band, but puts on a musical performance equating a quintet of musicians, if not a whole orchestra! Stuart McRorie Tait’s live electronic show is the culmination of mastering the “co-ordinated independence”

technique, but the results are extraordinary. From covering classic rock tunes made famous by the Beatles, Max Webster/Kim Mitchell and Billy Idol to the reggae sounds of Bob Marley and the Wailers, plus original melodies with entertaining lyrics, his repertoire is seemingly endless. You may even get to hear classical, if he plays his unique electronic instrumen-

tation version of Bach, during one of his sets. Drums, rhythm and bass guitars, plus keyboards and, of course, singing, McRorie has something for everyone. The show has a cover charge of $10 and starts at 9 p.m. Feb. 15. The Sirdar Pub reminds everyone to think ahead and drink responsibly.

Friends film highlights search for musician FRIENDS OF THE CINEMA

With extremely high ratings from audiences and movie critics alike, the next Friends of the Cinema presentation, Searching for Sugar Man, is likely to be popular with the Creston audience. Rodriguez was a huge musical success in South Africa in the 1970s, but only after his rumoured death by suicide on an American stage after his debut album bombed. For two decades, South Africans danced and partied to the music of Rodriguez, long forgotten in his home country, the United States. A search by two South Africans to find out the truth about the disappearance of their musical hero led to the making of Searching for Sugar Man. Once projected to be the great recording artist of his generation, the memory of Rodriguez is kept alive only by his music, which is now the soundtrack to an Academy Award-nominated film. Searching for Sugar Man, having touched audiences around the world, was selected as a finalist in the best documentary feature in this year’s Oscar voting. Last year, it opened the Sundance Film Festival. Searching for Sugar Man will presented at Prince Charles Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 18. Admission is $10 at the door. Proceeds from Friends of the Cinema films go to local organizations.

Thunder Cats out of playoff race Junior team drops two games to division front-runners

BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff The Creston Valley Thunder Cats had only a slim hope of making the playoffs going into last week’s games, but losing three of four games means a last place finish is now secured in the KIJHL’s Eddie Mountain Division. A loss against the team they were trying to catch for fourth place and a playoff spot last Tuesday started the downward slide. A home ice advantage wasn’t enough as the Cats went down 7-4 to the Columbia Valley Rockies. “This was one of our most frustrating performances of the season,” coach Josh Hepditch said on Monday. “It was a four-point game and a win would have put us in a good position to make a playoff run. And we just didn’t show up.” Creston took a 4-3 lead into the third period, then collapsed, giving up four goals in the final frame. A two-goal performance by Joey Berget was helped by singles from Matthew Murray and Colby Livingstone proved not to be enough to keep the Cats in the playoff hunt. In a penalty-filled third period, Columbia Valley scored two of its three goals on the power play and added an empty netter to seal the deal. The weekend began on a brighter note as Creston started with a 6-3 win at home over the Kelowna Chiefs. “This was the game that showed the potential our team has,” Hepditch said. We took on one of the strongest teams in the league, played a full 60 minutes and proved what we could do when we really wanted it.” With two goals in each period, the

Cats were in complete control after giving up the first goal. Livingstone and Jesse Collins scored in the first period, with Livingstone and Joey Berget scoring in the second to give Creston a 4-3 edge going into the third period. Tyler Akeroyd and Angus Johnston scored the final frame’s only goals. Kelowna leads the Okanagan division and has the second highest point total in the KIJHL On Saturday the Thunder Cats took the show on the road to Golden, where the Rockets are in a tight scramble with the Fernie Ghostriders for first place in the Eddie Mountain Division. “We came off a big emotional win against Kelowna and came out really, really flat,” the coach said. “We were still in a position to win in the third period but we came out on the wrong end.” Creston had 2-1 and 3-2 leads in the second period but another third period collapse saw them give up five goals. Only Matti Jmaeff, with his second of the game, was able to light up the lamp in the third period. The end result was an 8-4 drubbing. James Veitch and Akeroyd also scored for Creston in a game that saw all three starts awarded to the home team. Creston then faced the hungry Ghostriders at home on Sunday in front of 450 fans. Fernie jumped out to a quick 3-1 first period lead, then held on during a fierce third period comeback by the Cats that saw the game even at 3-3 before

Fernie power play and empty net goals sealed a win for the division frontrunners. Collins scored for Creston in the opening period, with Trevor Hannah and Andrew Hodder scoring to make the game close in the third period. Creston outshot Fernie 42-29. Fernie’s Braedon Monk had a game to remember, scoring four goals to lead his team to the win. Monk leads his team in scoring with 21 goals and 55 points. “We played a pretty good game and stayed right with Fernie,” Hepditch said. “But then we had a seven-minute penalty kill in the third period that we almost killed off, then gave up a goal to fall behind. We just couldn’t find a way to get the goal we needed after that.” Creston rounds out the season with a game in Columbia Valley on Saturday.
