Just for the fun of it, hun

Speed dating for seniors very once in a while, you get that rare chance at a second first time. For a handful of lucky seniors and singles this Valentine’s season, that opportunity will be provided by our very own library system. DANIELLE Literary Speed Dating kicks POPE off its second year this week news@ with a special singles (25-40) mondaymag.com event on Feb. 14, followed by two rounds on Feb. 16 geared for more seasoned daters: singles 40-60, then singles 60+. And on March 8, a special all-ages single lesbians event will excite library halls. “It’s so hard to meet people in Victoria, and I always loved reading the ‘missed connections’ in the paper and seeing who was trying to reach out,” says Devon Tatton, Children and Family Literacy librarian and creator of the Greater Victoria Public Library’s speed-dating program. “Once you retire, where do you really go?” Last year, at the first event, a nervous 10 ladies and 5 gentlemen, all over 60, showed up to retest the waters. Some had been married, divorced or widowed and were looking for various things, but none had tried speed dating. “Everyone was super nervous, and it was cute because they all start on the same playing field,” says Tatton. “All of them left with a smile on their faces, laughing and saying what a good time they had, even if they didn’t meet anyone.” The rules are simple: women fill up to 15 allotted tables, and men rotate from table to table every four minutes as the chime tolls. Once all the rounds are over, all participants fill out a form saying who, if anyone, they would be interested in hearing from. If two parties list each other, organizers send out respective contact info. If only one expresses interest, organizers let the sought after party know someone is looking, but it’s up to them to make the move. While the structure is meant to keep things lighthearted and quick-paced, there is break time for daters to mingle over heart-shaped cookies, and for those who would struggle to know how to start a four-minute conversation, what better conversation starter than a good book? “We often tell people to bring something that’s really important to them, like a favourite book, pictures of kids, collections, etc. which can be fun conversation starters,” says Tatton. While she has not had the opportunity to participate herself, Tatton agrees that fitting your life story into four minutes is a challenge. Lists of clever questions can help — whether the date is four minutes or four hours. “My favourite question is, ‘What do you like to do on Sunday morning?’” she says. “You can tell a lot about a person with that one ... And once you’ve broken the ice, the rest is fun.” Try Literary Speed dating (singles 25-40) Thurs., Feb. 14, 7-8:30pm at Saanich Cenntenial Branch (3110 Tillicum). Singles 40-60: Sat., Feb. 16, 2-4pm at Central Branch (735 Broughton). Singles 60+: Sat., Feb. 16, 1-3pm at Oak Bay Branch (1442 Monterey).

Picking up your next date at a bar may not be that original, but for those who want to play the speed dating game at a faster pace this Valentine’s, Canoe Brewpub ( 450 Swift) is hosting its own Singles Night Out Speed Dating event, starting at 8pm on Thurs., Feb. 14, until the beer runs dry. “First dates are not about deciding — or even thinking about — if this is the person with whom you will want to spend the rest of your life,” says organizer Ryan McGregor. “First dates are opportunities to meet people and to consider whether or not you want to go on a second date.” Singles can sign up in the pub, with no cover charge. Live music by The Adults and specially priced cocktails will help grease those dating treads. More info: 250-361-1940.

SONG STUCK IN MY HEAD OK, I’m a sucker for ’80s punk. What can I say; it was my era. The Clash, Joe Jackson, Billy Bragg, The Ramones, The Dead Kennedys, The Monks ... every time I hear one of their songs, I can’t help but smile. So when New Orleans’ music sensation, Amanda Shaw and The Cute Guys released a fiddle-heavy cover of The Clash’s “Should I Stay Or Should I Go,” I was all over it. WEEKLY REPORT CARD

With all the heart candy floating around, it’s the perfect time to think about what sweets do to the brain. Turns out many animals, including humans, are hard-wired to crave sweet tastes. Dr. Dianne Lattemann, a neurobiologist and researcher at the University of Washington, is the upcoming speaker for UVic’s Café Scientifique seminar series. Lattemann says that, in humans, the brain is “literally a cookie monster.” Her research has found that highly processed foods laden with sugar and fat alter the brain chemistry, making us repeatedly seek out these foods, even though we know they’re bad for us. Learn more about Lattemann’s research and plans to deal with the obesity epidemic at the free seminar: “From fat to sweet and back again — a scientist’s journey into hormones, sugar and the choices we make” Tues., Feb. 19, 6:30pm at Hermann’s Jazz Club (753 View) Register: 250-472-4067. and third place. Now here are a few tips garnered from last year’s entries. The judges liked poems that had some connection to Victoria or Island life. Humour always helps, but originality and cleverness is what made the cream rise to the top. And profanity scored low. A limerick is simply a short, five-line poem written in the rhyming scheme of aabba, so that lines one, two, and five all rhyme with each other, and lines three and four rhyme with each other. There are some other rules about the number of metric feet per line, etc., but since this is just for fun, we won’t be too picky so as long as it doesn’t tie our tongues into knots. Last year’s winner from Byron Miller is a good example:

Devon Tatton believes everyone can find love, or at least a good book, during Literacy Speed Dating.

Last year, the competition was fierce as dozens of Victorians poured their hearts into rhyming couplets that made the judges laugh, weep and cringe. Others . . . well, let’s just say that it pays to read a limerick or two before writing one. The rules are simple. 1) Write an original limerick. 2) Visit mondaymag.com/contest 3) Enter your limerick into the contest. There is no entry fee; the deadline is Fri., March 1; and there will be fabulous prizes for first, second

s though pregnancy doesn’t come with enough challenges, expectant mothers living on the streets are met with barriers that can mean the difference between life and death. Thanks to the province and local partners, the James Bay Community Project will now offer HerWay Home, a child-focused, women-centred, dropin and outreach program for pregnant women and new moms with substance-use challenges. “HerWay Home will support the health and social care needs of women in Greater Victoria who are considered high-risk and might otherwise fall through the cracks,” says Stephanie Cadieux, minister of Children and Family Development. “The program will provide access to services that vulnerable, expectant mothers and women with young children need so they can have healthier pregnancies and focus on being good parents.” The project officially opened on Jan. 7, and has since served 11 women and 3 babies within its first few weeks of operation. Six years of planning and research went into the development by a volunteer committee of 30 experts, community organizations, advocates and educators. “Currently, a baby a week on Vancouver Island is born that is exposed to drugs or alcohol in the womb,” says David Gerry, co-chair of the HerWay Home Advisory Committee. “The range of services and how they are provided by HerWay are a crucial step in reducing the number.” The project is being funded by Children’s Health Foundation of Vancouver Island through a pledge of $3.3 million over five years, and will be operated by the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA) in partnership with the Ministry of Children and Family Development. OFF THE FRONT > FEATURE or many, the thought of their grandparents dating sends a collective shutter down one’s ageist spine. Like it or not, Victorians don’t stop dating at 65. In fact, retirement can mean the beginning of a whole new dating cycle. Chuck Addison is a 77-year-old retired military man and pastor from Ottawa. He lost his wife, Karen, over two years ago due to stroke and dementia. It devastated him. “Men don’t do as well as women when they’re alone,” he says. “I was rushed to the hospital four times.” The physical decline that Chuck experienced stemmed from his mental outlook. “I didn’t want to move here [to The Wellesley retirement home on Blanshard]. I didn’t care to live. Seriously. I was down hill,” he recalls of those days. Eventually, he, his COLIN CAYER caregiver and his children decided a retirement home Special to Monday was best. They put the family home up for sale and it sold that day. A month later, the majority of his belongings were gone and he was starting a new phase in his life, one that he expected would be solitary. “The last thing on my mind was being involved again.”

F

RUMOURED LOVE But solitary life wasn’t in the cards. A year after his loss, Chuck and his son went to the retirement home’s restaurant. Thanks to 20 years spent in Germany, his son struck up a conversation with a group of diners speaking German. The conversation extended an unexpected lifeline when that same group invited Chuck to dine with them the following night. That’s when he got his first look at Judy, 81. “I started taking an interest in her as a friend, a companion. She started to feel the same way . . . and I started to get more motivation!” Dating in your late 70s and early 80s has its own set of complications. “The rumours from my own church that would come back!” Chuck says, still shocked. “I get a phone call saying that they just heard some young pastor . . . first, I like the word young,” he chuckles, “was dating every woman here. Taking every woman shopping and out for a meal. Then I was eloping and had a woman pregnant. I hadn’t even gone anywhere with Judy yet!” More than the rumours is the outright slander. For many in this generation, the idea of spending romantic time with someone outside of wedlock is unconscionable.

Love is Never

Over the Hill Dating in your late 70s and early 80s has its own set of complications, but ‘whether you’re 18 or 81, love is love’ COMMUNITY SUPPORT Violet (Vi) and Alan Whalley’s secret to 65 years of marriage is never leaving the house angry and always giving a little peck. While Vi doesn’t like the idea of her grandchildren living with their significant others before marriage, she doesn’t have a problem with those in her community, like Chuck and Judy, doing so. “I think it’s better. What if you lost your significant other? You’re very lonely. I told Al, ‘if you find someone you think you’re compatible with, okay ... but I’ll come down and kill you,’” she jokes.

WHEN IT’S RIGHT The appropriate amount of time to wait after the death of a spouse is difficult to decide. Chuck’s girlfriend, Judy, ERIC BERNDT didn’t start dating until five years after Chuck and Judy have found a new spark for life — with each other. her husband’s death. For Chuck, it was over a year. Judy says, “It’s up to you. If you fall in love, you fall in the church. He was a decorated pastor and continues to give love.” sermons on Sundays. That’s how he put a stop to the rumours Judy’s recollection of her and Chuck’s first date was over once and for all. breakfast. “The first time he paid, and the second time I paid. “I was doing a service,” Chuck says, “and at the end I said a We do everything half and half, but that time he got a coffee prayer. I said ‘Thank you, God, for bringing a woman into my which isn’t regular for him and it brought the bill up,” Judy life who’s now given me a purpose.’ That stopped it all.” laughs. “We have a lot of fun together.” Challenges aside, dating in later life looks good, espeOne thing this year-long couple has going for them is their cially on these two. STREET SMARTS What was your most memorable Valentine’s Day?

KIERAN REPORT

The game of polls is played by many have covered politics in B.C. all the way back to 1970 when the godfather of free enterprise, W.A.C. Bennett, was being dogged by the dark knight of socialBRIAN ism, Dave Barrett. KIERAN Through the bkieran@ decades I have found mondaymag.com that when premiers and party leaders can’t feel the love, when they start falling out of favour with the electorate, they all sing the same tune. It goes like this: “The only poll that matters is the poll on election day.” The latest to warble this refrain is Premier Christy Clark. The polls have not been Christy’s friend for some time now. Last summer an Angus Reid public opinion poll of 800 adults found that one in five 2009 Liberal voters intended to vote NDP. Clark’s reaction was to lash out: “I think the Angus Reid poll contributes to the growing cynicism about polls in general and Angus Reid’s accuracy. We always see these guys get it wrong.”

I

In fact, Angus Reid usually gets it right. But, the same cannot be said for other survey firms that love to gain public exposure by jumping on the polling bandwagon as an election approaches. We saw an example of this last week when relatively obscure Justason Market Intelligence released a poll showing a 22 per cent gap between the NDP at 48 per cent support and the Liberals at 26. My radar was flashing red alert when prominent NDP camp follower Bill Tieleman started pimping this astounding finding on his Facebook page. I say astounding because a week earlier a survey by the Mustel Group showed 43 per cent support for the NDP compared to 33 per cent for the Liberals, a gap of only 10 points. How could two polls be so divergent? For openers, (Barb) Justason Market Intelligence is essentially a Metro Vancouver survey company with little credibility on the provincial stage. Secondly, the record must show that Mustel Group, while usually credible, was originally well known as McIntyre & Mustel Research Associates. That would be McIntyre as in Joan McIntyre, the twoterm Liberal MLA for West Vancouver — Sea to Sky. Just saying.

We made dinner and drank in my room beneath the twinkle lights.

Regardless of expertise or pedigree, both these polling samples were too small to command respect. Justason’s was a telephone-online poll of 600 adults and Mustel’s was an even smaller sample of 500. I believe you can’t start taking polling results to the databank unless the sample is 800-plus. Here’s an example of how numbers get skewed in a small sample: The Justason poll gives the NDP a staggering 35 per cent lead in Metro Vancouver and a slim five per cent lead here on Vancouver Island. That is simply not the case. A January poll by Angus Reid showed the NDP with a 17 per cent lead over the Liberals in Metro Vancouver and a 24 per cent lead on the Island. The sample size was 800plus and the findings were consistent with earlier polls. The same poll gave the NDP a province-wide lead of 15 per cent over the Liberals, 46 to 31. Not 10 points and certainly not 22. In the coming weeks we will be inundated with polls. And, more than once, we will hear the refrain: “The only poll that matters is the poll on election day.” Be assured that party headquarters, regardless of their leaders’ protestations, will be polling 24/7 looking for glimmers of hope and snapshots of insight. CITY WATCHDOG

Commitment needed before committees lancing at a recent story on Victoria city council’s looming decision over the fate of its public advisory committees (PAC), I took a moment to think back on the three years I spent on those committees to search for a reason — any reason — to craft an impassioned plea for their continued existence. It’s been a few days since then and SIMON I’m still coming up short. NATTRASS Councillors, city staff and PAC memsnattrass@ bers alike have noted that the committees, mondaymag.com intended to be a sober second thought or pool of willing experts for council to draw upon, have become little more than a convenient dumping ground for eager political junkies and folks with an agenda to push. However, it wasn’t always this way. A younger me was inspired to join up after hearing a former Victoria councillor wax poetic about the days when expertpacked advisory committees regularly had

G

the ear of a council overwhelmed by 300-page agendas. Skewing the odds and enraging the gambler in all of us, council seems divided 50/50 on whether to support a recommendation to abandon its PACs entirely. Not that it matters. When it comes to citizen engagement at city hall, the fate of a few committees is less important than the decisions that follow this one. Since at least 2008, the city has recognized that its PACs, as noted in that year’s governance review, “did not seem to be considered of much value by council,” and were “infrequently consulted.” This means it’s been four years during which the city has failed to make these committees a useful part of public consultation. In the meantime, the city’s Official Community Plan update generated input from almost 6,000 residents, proving the value of engagement that has nothing to do with the potentially outdated PACs. Neither of the city’s options guarantee success. The debacle of the Johnson Street Bridge project, during which the public was ignored and misinformed at every turn, clearly shows where project-based consultations can succumb to political bias, and the history of PACs proves they can still serve a purpose. What matters isn’t the method the city uses to talk to taxpayers. What matters is whether politics and laziness get the upper hand over transparency and the public’s right to a voice at city hall. M

Or are the ethnic and First Nations populations in this school less powerful in the civic arena than private schools to stop anything that does not serve the needs of the children? GOOD MORNING BLUES n the spirit of hip hop borrowing or sampling from other genres, Vancouver emcee Cityreal teamed up with blues guitarist Wes Mackey to create Good Morning Blues, a 10-track fusion album featuring Cityreal’s conscious lyrics over the incredibly soulful licks Mackey lays down. (It also features two Leadbelly covers and collaborations with Madchild and D-Sisive.) After hearing Mackey play at a Vancouver restaurant, Cityreal asked the bluesman to meet for coffee. What was going to be a single collaboration grew into an EP and then to a full-length album. “At first he was cautious. Who is this kid asking me to make rap songs?” says Cityreal. O

n one of the first freezing evenings of the new year, I arrived downtown with a friend to find our intended destination closed, a situation made even more irritating by the fact that we had found rock star parking around the corner and had already smugly paid for the remaining time before the 6pm amnesty. As we had done before we headed out, we reconsidered nearby options and rejected them again just as quickly. Just as I thought we would be getting back in the car, Don said “How about Fiamo?” We walked a few blocks west and received the genuinely friendly greeting I have always found here, wondering aloud to each other sotto voce why we hadn’t thought of it in the first place as we headed to our table. There’s a few reasons why neither of us have ever had a bad time here. First, people working here seem to genuinely like what they do, which makes a good atmosphere effortless. The place is visually intriguing, whether you sit at the mahogany bar or in one of the small booths in the foyer for a quick bite with a drink (try one of the amazing house cocktails, or a glass of wine from the

well-chosen list of Italian and B.C. offerings), or a meal in the main dining room with its rustic wood floors, brick walls and a chandelier that would have impressed Liberace. A cozy mezzanine is the perfect place for group get-togethers and, in the summer, the patio reclaimed from Yates Street pavement decorated with string lights and olive trees makes for surprisingly pleasant al fresco dining on a warm night, despite its proximity to traffic. That’s what I found out last year, with an incredible smoked tuna salad with crisp greens, Continued on next page

Beyond the decor and the service, food is consistently good here. James Avila and his team offer dishes I would describe as traditional Italian, gently reinterpreted with new world technique. The antipasto platter is perfect for a shared first course, loaded with local and imported meats, cheeses, onion confit, poached pear, olives and nuts, but this is also one of a very few places where the mention of a house salad turns me into Pavlo’s dog. The Mista salad is packed with crisp greens, radicchio, shaved fennel and fresh basil, and will wake up the most sluggish palate. Don lingered on this section of the menu before yielding to a generous pizza from the specials list, smothered with sausage and pepper. If you hate the beginning of the week, take note that on Monday evenings pizzas from the regular menu are a mere $12, which makes a bottle of wine from the affordable list an even better idea. The fresh sheet here is always worth a look, and this Valentine’s Day will be no exception. Starters include gazpacho with cilantro and curry oil; scallops pan roasted with duck fat, yellow tomato, garlic and basil oil; and a warm salad of baby spinach, sautéed leeks, double smoked bacon and sherry vinaigrette. Hailing all the way from Bourdeaux, Veuve du Vernay Rose is an absolute steal at less than $15, and will impress anyone who loves a good sparkling wine. Pale straw with a hint of pink, it will fill your glass with surprisingly fine bubbles for its modest price tag. Crisp and classic, it is made with the surprising choice of Tempranillo grapes — resulting in a pleasantly dry but refreshing sparkler, which leads with a bouquet of dried fruit. The first sip offers a balance of yeast and dried stone fruits, finishing with a pleasant touch of minerality. Frankly, it holds it own against not only cremant du Bourgognes, but a few of the established Champagne houses. Served chilled as an aperitif, with light grilled meats, seafood or aged cheeses. Or, if you’re celebrating, perhaps in the bathtub. M

In addition to Expect to dream more vividly as well increased popularity, this same planetary as appreciating the burdens of others influence triggers the part of your chart with greater sensitivity. Pisces is loyal, alive, appreciarelated to goal setting with respect to your hopes tive, imaginative, polished, empathetic, sensitive and and dreams for the future. What dreams do you magnetic – and we will all embrace these qualities hope to achieve? If you share your ideas and hopes more in the next few weeks. Pisces rules the feet and with others, their feedback will help you. Trust this so I’m going to use this energy to buy frivolous shoes. process. Meanwhile, romance with a boss is possible. (Someone has to do it.)) If others ask for your creative help on something, give ARIES MARCH 21-APRIL 19 it. (Why not?) As your birthday approaches, it is obvious that your GEMINI MAY 21-JUNE 20 personal year is ending. Before it arrives, set aside Holy Celestial! A gaggle of planet is hanging out at some time (perhaps this week?) to think about how high noon in your chart. For starters, this calls attenyou want your new year to unfold. Do you want it tion to you, which is why others will notice you more to be different from last year? Most people never than usual for whatever reason. It also makes you really make goals. We go through life, day after day, unusually ambitious and it creates a desire in you to coping with events and putting out fires or making talk to everyone – and when Gemini gets a desire to fun plans here and there. But what about the big talk, look out world! Romance with someone older picture? There’s no question that if you’re specific or from another culture or someone who is more about a few goals, the chances of achieving them are established will take place for many of you. You’re far greater. Your effectiveness as a human being is definitely out there flying your colours! Travel for being challenged right now, especially your ability to

pleasure if you can because adventure appeals to you. In addition, your appreciation of beauty is heightened at this time and you will feel inspired by nature, beautiful buildings, museums and the creative art of others. This is an exciting time for you!

CANCER JUNE 21-JULY 22 You definitely need a change of scenery. You want to travel, explore exciting options, discover new territory, learn new, exciting things and have some adventure in your life. You want it all! In fact, the reason some of you will be able to travel or to get further education or explore opportunities in publishing, the media, medicine and the law is because you will get help and assistance from someone else. This could be a gift of cash or an inheritance. Someone might pick up the tab for something or let you use something they own. Or perhaps you will benefit indirectly through the increased wealth of your partner? Meanwhile, intimate relationships are sweetly passionate. Romance swoons swimmingly along. (Be still my beating heart.) LEO JULY 23-AUG 22 Your month ahead is very passionate, which means you’ll be passionate about everything. You will definitely be passionate about reducing your debt and scrutinizing credit cards, shared property, mortgages, loans and anything you own jointly with others. All that stuff is on your mind now. In addition, you will be equally passionate in partnerships. You’ll have passionate responses to professional partners as well as passionate responses to intimate, sexual partners. Nothing ho-hum here! (Don’t leave home without a

red rose clenched in your teeth.) Quite likely, your ability to get along well with significant others is part of why this passion is building up within you. It’s a happy time for relationships.

VIRGO AUG 23-SEPT 22 An unusually strong emphasis of planets now opposes you, causing you to focus on partnerships and close friendships much more than usual. Mercury, of course, will fuel discussions and lots of talk about exploring ideas or coming to terms with something. No doubt this is in response to Mars opposite your sign, which promotes tension and make you impatient with others. Fortunately, Venus will soon be in the picture paving the way and smoothing everything, making relationships cozy, warm and supportive. Nevertheless, Neptune is there for a long run (maybe even two years of causing an overall confusion to your partnerships). Neptune is like Vaseline on your lens. You tend to see what you want to see instead of what is really there. (Handy if you can’t face the truth.) LIBRA SEPT. 23-OCT. 22 You’re in work mode and you want to get better organized. This is an excellent motivation because you are affected by your immediate environment. You want your surroundings to feel good, look good and function! Fortunately, you’re willing to pitch in in a hands-on way, in addition to which you’re definitely delegating. (Librans love to delegate.) Of course, it’s not all work and no play, and it never is with you. You have lots of opportunity to party and enjoy good times. Believe it or not, this is also a great time for romance, sports events, social occasions and little

vacations. Yes, in the next four weeks, you can have it all. (Did you want your dressing on the side?)

SCORPIO OCT 23-NOV 21 You are the winner for the next four-to-six weeks because quite literally, a handful of planets is hyping the part of your chart related to romance, love affairs, parties, vacations, social diversions, sports events and playful times with children. What’s not to like? Not only will this be a fun-filled month, it will be productive for creative projects. (Great for writers, artists, painters, sculptors and anyone involved in arts and crafts.) The next few weeks are also a marvellous time to entertain at home and tackle redecorating projects or tweak your home to make it look clean, comfortable and attractive. SAGITTARIUS NOV 22- DEC 21 You’re super-focused on home and family. You might be involved with a parent, or renovations, redecorating projects, residential moves and major repairs. Because so much is going on in your private life, this could create tension with family members or possibly competition. Don’t feed this. Be tolerant and patient and it will fade away. In fact, Venus is helping you to be diplomatic and charming with everyone, including siblings. Speaking of which, this is also a good time to make money from writing and speaking because you have such grace with your words.

be on the go. But this hyped energy favours those of you in sales, writing, marketing, acting and teaching. In fact, many of you will increase your earnings and, of course, some will be buying beautiful things for yourselves and loved ones. Remember, this is the best time in more than a decade for you to improve your job scene. Make the most of it!

AQUARIUS JAN 20-FEB 18 Your focus on money continues. You’re working hard to earn money but not only that, you’re also dreaming up money-making ideas. Naturally all this energy related to finances and cash flow triggers opportunities to spend money as well. This is opportune because, with fair Venus in your sign, this is an excellent time to buy wardrobe items. You feel charming, relaxed and comfortable in your own skin so you like what you see in the mirror. When you feel depressed, dumpy and overweight it’s a dreadful time to shop for clothes. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. PISCES FEB 19-MARCH 20 sign boosting your energy and confidence, and making you talkative, eager and ready to reach out and grab more of life. Take a dance class. Take up running. Do something physical so that you can blow off some of this pent-up steam that might be building up within you because you have lots of energy. (Which is a good thing.) You’ll be unusually effective talking to others and you will certainly stand up for yourself and say what you mean and mean what you say. This positive boost will last for several weeks. Grab the baton and run with it!

CAPRICORN DEC 22-JAN 19 A busy six weeks ahead! Your schedule will be jampacked with short trips, errands, visits with many people plus more reading and writing than usual. Just accept that will be a fast-paced month and you’ll MONDAY MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 14 - FEBRUARY 20, 2013 mondaymag.com
