Friday, February 15, 2013 Kootenay News Advertiser

This year, the people in British Columbia finally got the holiday in February we’ve been wanting for years. The new ‘Family Day’ gives us a chance to get together and spend a fun weekend with the ones we love, getting a boost to make it through the last of the dreary winter days. Spending time as a family ideally should not be dependent on special holidays. At first glance, many parents might see gardening as a task that is better completed without the help of the entire family, especially if they have small children. With a little bit of preparation and forethought, however, gardening can turn from a chore into an activity enjoyed by the entire family. And that’s not even talking about the educational benefits gardening can have. The first thing is to look at the age of your children and their interests. Do you have a toddler who loves to play in the mud and finds nothing more exciting than bugs and worms? Set aside a spot where she can dig to her heart’s content and examine all the critters you collect throughout the garden. A curious kindergartener might be ready for the first growing project of his own. Give him a patch where he can watch his own flowers or veggies come up from seed and care for them throughout the season. If you are a gardener who wants everything perfect, now is the time to relax the rules a little. It’s alright to have crooked rows and veggies and flowers intermingling with abandon. A few weeds won’t hurt anybody either. This is the kids’ patch and they call the shots. Gardening is easier when you have proper tools. That is true for children as well, so get them ageappropriate shovels and rakes. There are special kids’ toolkits, with brightly-coloured garden tools as well as small gloves, aprons and sun hats with fun motives. A kid-sized watering can, a bug net and a magnifying glass complement the selection. For kids, it is great to see plants grow from seed to harvest while knowing they have nurtured it along. It gives parents a chance to teach about things such as how drainage works (watch water disappear into the ground) or the role insects play in the garden (watch bees and other pollinators do their job or keep an eye on those pests to stop them eating your plant treasures). It is best to choose big and quick-to-germinate seeds to keep kids interested. Some popular varieties include peas, beans, sunflowers or nasturtiums. Kids also love anything that is either their size or really big. They might prefer miniature vegetables such as cherry tomatoes or small cucumbers. Sunflowers are easy to grow from seed and popular with kids. They come in various sizes, from the dwarf plant ‘Teddy Bear’ to the giant ‘Russian’ sunflower. Pumpkins are another large favourite. You and your kids’ imagination is the limit when it comes to selecting plants for the garden. Try veggie varieties with interesting colours and shapes, such as purple carrots, rainbow chard or scallop squash. For children who like to explore through touch, pick plants with different textures. Add some soft lamb's ears and woolly thyme or prickly plants such as strawflowers and echinacea. Snapdragons and bleeding hearts are fun to dissect and many annuals, such as cosmos and zinnia are great for bouquets and produce more flowers if picked often. You don’t have to wait until spring either. Many bulbs, such as hyacinths and paperwhites, are great for forcing. Forcing is the process of exposing bulbs to cold temperatures - like placing them in a fridge - then planting them to make them think it’s time to grow. Enjoy some family time outdoors, teach your children about nature - it will pass on your passion for gardening and create precious memories. Till next time... happy gardening. Submitted by Kerstin

Living on a budget gives financial perspective Living from one paycheque to another, never knowing the extent of your debt, and excessive use of credit cards are all situations that can cause serious problems. In other words, learning how to control your money is an absolutely essential step in getting out of financial difficulty. There is only one

real solution to taking control of your financial situation and knowing exactly where you’re headed: a budget. That’s right, this good old method is still the only way to get yourself out of the red and into the black. Knowing how much money is coming in and how much money is going out every month allows you

to make wiser decisions regarding your expenses. And when you know your limits, it is much easier to avoid falling further into debt. A sheet of paper and a pencil is all you need in order to figure out the overall state of your income and expenses. On one side note all your sources of income: salary, bonuses, tips,

Having the discipline to live by a budget will save you stress down the road. government allowances, etc. On the other side, mark down all your expenses. This will include both the unavoidable (such as rent, heat, telephone, and transportation) and avoidable ones (cable TV, clothes, movie rentals, newspapers, gym membership). Subtract your expenses from your income, and now you know what you have left at the end of the month. Think about

saving if you have a surplus. If there is a deficit, ask yourself what expenses you can cut. The Internet is full of sites offering useful budgeting tools for free. Worksheets, calculation sheets, and other tools can help you create a balanced budget. It may seem like a pain, but keeping financial documents and receipts is important, especially if you think you could be audited. Submitted People should keep all pertinent financial documents, receipts, and statements for as long as there is a possibility that tax authorities could propose an audit. Unless you want the federal or provincial tax bureaus to do their own re-assessments without any substantiating documents from your files, you should be able to supply all documentation immediately upon request. If these documents are digitalized, you must be able to print them at any time. If you can’t supply the required receipts or supporting documents, you could end up with a refusal of credit, changes to deductions that you had earlier claimed, or delay in the treatment of your current tax return. Governments can issue an adjusted assessment to individuals in the three-year period following the

date of the first notice of assessment for a given year. There is no time limit if a declaration was never filed or if there is suspicion of fraud. Self-employed people are required to keep all their documents and records for a period of six years. This time period also applies to all taxpayers who wish to submit a request for supplementary deductions following the initial filing of an income tax return. It is a grave mistake to not keep all the pertinent documents and receipts in your files under the pretext that you filed your returns electronically. Documents that need to be kept include T4s, which are proof of employment income, medical expenses, contributions to registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs), alimony and child support statements, childcare costs, moving costs, charitable donations, and the like.
