Review finds support for secondary suites by Ph i l M e lnych uk staff reporter
Colleen Flanagan/The news
Ash Wednesday Sebastian Gorrie, in Grade 1 at St. Patrick’s School, listens to a prayer addressing poverty around the world during the annual Hunger Lunch on Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent, a 40-day fasting period before Easter for Christians around the world. Ashes, from the burning of the previous year’s Palm Sunday, are placed on the foreheads of believers in the sign of the cross to remind them of human mortality and penance to God.
Maple Ridge moved a step closer to a new secondary suite bylaw after the last stage in its public consultation process Wednesday. An open house reviewed input received so far in the year-long review, such as the fact that 79 per cent of the 67 people who answered a questionnaire believed that secondary suites are an important part of affordable housing. Most of those who responded, 69 per cent, also believed that Maple Ridge should keep its requirement that homeowners live in the home where the suite is located. While the district doesn’t know how many secondary suites are in the district, or how many are legally registered, according to Metro Vancouver stats for 2011, Maple Ridge has 2,890 suites dispersed throughout 16,650 single-family homes. see Suites, p8

4.6 metres in height (15 feet), or 1.5 metres higher. Trees will also be planted behind homes along Wildwood Crescent and at the border of Maple Ridge to dampen the incessant croaks and thumps that echo through the area when vehicles cross the Golden Ears Bridge. Set for completion in late May, the project will cost taxpayers $817,000. Mike Stark, president of the Southern Pitt Meadows Residents’ Association, is relieved to see a solution is finally underway.

“This process has been ongoing for more than 10 years, so I am happy to finally see a partial resolution to the noise issue with the installation of a sound barrier of appropriate height that will, according to TransLink, reduce the existing noise by 50 per cent,” he said. “This is a huge win for our community.” The new wall is the culmination of years of negotiation between the neighbourhood association, the city and TransLink that began in 2002, before the Golden Ears
Bridge was built. Residents voiced their concerns before the barrier was constructed as it was shorter than the large semi-trailer trucks that crisscross the span and far shorter than what’s recommended by acoustic experts. The neighbourhood association also wanted sinus plates installed between bridge expansion joints and continue to maintain that the interlocking plates are the best “long-term” solution to the noise. see Wall, p5

Mountain people peeved at traffic Too many trucks, some linked to B.C. Hydro project
Pitt council moving meetings
by Phil M elnyc h u k staff reporter
By Monisha Martins staff reporter
While an environmental group worries about B.C. Hydro’s trailblazing across rivers and streams, residents on Blue Mountain have more everyday concerns about the transmission line project going on in north Maple Ridge. Truck traffic and the noise, dust and congestion that accompany them are bothering residents who live on McNutt Road, north of Dewdney Trunk Road, near 272nd Street. “Now and again, we’ve got so many trucks going up and down,” said Lyn Thomas, who’s lived on McNutt Road for more than 20 years. One day, she estimated 250 gravel trucks grinded up the mountain to Blue Mountain forest. After coming down the mountain again, that meant more than 500 trucks trips in a day. Then they started to go up the road in pairs, then in convoys of three or four. Two weeks ago, she said 20 trucks went up the road. Some days, the truck traffic is constant, and it’s chewing up the road. Thomas said she’s complained twice to the District of Maple Ridge, but never heard back. “The funny thing is, six to nine months ago, they were bringing out logging trucks.” Now, trucks seem to be hauling logs back up the mountain, she added.
The City of Pitt Meadows will host several committee meetings away from city hall this year in an effort to attract more residents to attend. Council would like to hold at least three sessions elsewhere, with proposals to host them at the high school and new seniors centre. “We get the same three people time after time and it would be nice if we can reach out,” said Mayor Deb Walters, who promised to increase communication between city hall and its residents when she was elected. “A priority of council is to engage with the public and I think we are doing a pretty good job of it. “We are not always going to agree with each other, but certainly it’s important that we reach out and that people hear us and we hear them.” Committee meetings are not televised and are held before council meetings, where decisions are formally approved. Walters says committee meetings are a more relaxed setting. “I feel it’s more interesting because that’s where all the debate takes place,” she added. Dates for the off-site meetings have yet to be finalized.
Lyn Thomas stands on McNutt Road, where she says too many big gravel trucks are running up and down. Last week, the Alouette River Management Society and B.C. Hydro officials toured sites in the 248th Street area, where the transmission line was clearcut to the banks of local streams that flowed into the South Alouette River. The river group says clearing vegetation will hurt water and fish habitat, but Hydro has to clear to the edge of rivers to ensure there is clearance
beneath the towers. B.C. Hydro is twinning its Interior to Lower Mainland transmission line from Merritt to Coquitlam to meet increasing demand for power. More than 600 steel transmission towers with an average height of 42.5 metres will be built for the Interior to Lower Mainland Transmission Line. A tower was put up near Merritt earlier this month.
Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWS
B.C. Hydro spokesperson Simi Heer said she hadn’t heard any recent complaints from residents and urges people to contact them if they have any. She doubted there would be as many as 250 trucks a day on McNutt Road, but said the vehicles could be from other activity on the mountain. Maple Ridge staff are investigating.
Municipality would pay half to preserve school site School district would have to chip in for Silver Valley property by Phi l M elnyc h u k staff reporter
Sooner or later Silver Valley will need a school site, so both districts should figure out a way to keep the one they have, says Maple Ridge Coun. Cheryl Ashlie. “To me, it doesn’t make sense to lose that site [Blaney hamlet],” Ashlie said Wednesday. “We’re in this together. We need to stay in this together. If that site is gone, 20 years from now, there’s no getting it back. How can you not listen to the public?” Ashlie was commenting after a presentation Tuesday by Nicole Read, asking the district to buy the 1.5-hectare lot at 23103 – 136th Ave. The lot was supposed to be the site
for a new school, but Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows education board said recently that it no longer wanted to buy the property. That led Maple Ridge council to tell staff to prepare a zone amending bylaw that would allow building of 30 homes, plus townhouses on the developerowned property. Since that decision a few weeks ago, residents have mounted a campaign to keep the lot for future school use. Residents say a school is needed in the new suburb so kids don’t have to face heavy traffic on 232nd Street on their way down the hill to Yennadon elementary. The long-term 2001 Silver Valley area plan also identifies that site and two others as locations for elementary schools. Read, the Action Silver Valley leader, told council Tuesday that if there’s no money for a school, that at least the land can be used for park or community space.
“Your role is to make decisions that are consistent with the vision of making us a world leading example of thoughtful development and socially cohesive community. “You need to ensure that your stakeholders are both informed and in alignment with that vision,” she said in a slide show presentation to council. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin said he wouldn’t favour buying the property unless the cost was shared by the school district. If that’s the case, “then I’m good with that.” “If it’s buying it without that, then I struggle with that.” Daykin said if the district bought the property, it would be difficult to sell it to developers to recoup the cost at a later date because residents would expect the land to stay public. Colleen Flanagan/THE NEWS The municipality already owns land next to the school site. That property is Javad Ahmadi pushes his niece, Sevda, 15 months, up the hill towards Silver Valley along 232nd Street on Wednesday. proposed for a park.

He couldn’t think of any major issue or accomplishment he or council addressed during that time. “I think that the election will come down to a few simple choices that they’ll have to ponder as they go to vote. “If you look at it, the NDP really is anti-business and they’re proposing things that aren’t good for the economy.

Once again, on behalf of the Westside Auto/ Tasha Eve Barry Variety Memorial Fund, I will be attending the Variety’s - ‘The Children’s Charity TV Telethon’ to make our presentation on TV of our yearly contribution. Look for our presentation team on TV between 11am and Noon on Sunday morning Feb 17th. These are monies which we collect when our customers donate at the front counter, as well as those earned from two other sources. Last year we introduced a new service we call ‘Detailing for Donations’. How it works is fairly simple. When you drop off your car for servicing you can request one of three levels of detailing. The basic service offered is a car wash, or you can upgrade that to a wash & vacuum, or upgrade again to the complete package which is a wash, vacuum & interior shampoo. The cost is very reasonable and all of the funds collected go towards our yearly collection for Variety. What could be better than having a clean car knowing that what you paid for is going directly to a very deserving charity? This year we came up with yet another way to help the kids, you & the environment. Old Car Batteries are worth about $4-$6 each to recyclers. We sell quite a few new batteries here at Westside and donate the funds from recycling the old batteries directly to our Tasha Barry Memorial Fund for Variety. But we could use more! So, if you or anybody you know has any old batteries, that don’t leak, lying around the storage shed, garage, basement, backyard, uncle’s truck… feel free to drop them off here at Westside Auto Repairs. You will be helping us help the kids. Plus, you’ll be making sure dangerous/toxic goods get disposed of properly. So, it’s a triple header Win, Win, Win! Over the last five years we’ve collected almost $10K and we hope to improve upon that with these new programs we’ve started. We’d like to take the time to thank all our clients that participated in last years fund raising. All of your donations are appreciated. It’s an amazing feeling to attend the Telethon and see all the time and effort that goes into that show by all the volunteers involved. The amount of people you see on TV, which is quite a few, pales in comparison to those that make up the behind the scene’s group. To look into all those little faces and realize what we’re doing is really important and truly appreciated makes all the time we spend washing cars in the winter time worthwhile. So, in closing I encourage all our clients both current and new, to take advantage of this ‘Detailing for Donations’ service we’re offering. We feel that it’s an opportunity that everyone should take advantage of. We’ve taken the weekend car wash fund raising process and improved upon it in an effort to keep up with the times. Sound like a good idea? Just give us a call and we’ll be very happy to help you.

They want to raise the corporate tax 20 per cent. They want to eliminate balanced budget legislation. They want to make things easier for unions to get new members. “There’s all sorts of things that aren’t good for the confidence of the business community and the economy.” Bing said the party that can best manage the economy will be the main issue of the campaign. He added that he’d prefer to have a nomination contest because it looks better for the winning candidate heading into an election. Rosenau plans on being a tough opponent. “I’m a known quantity in the community. I have a public profile, some name recognition. I’ve got a pulse on the community. I think my chances are pretty good, too.”

Bridge joints are still an issue
WANTED: 30 PEOPLE WITH HEARING LOSS!
Wall from front
TransLink has already spent $600,000 installing cloth-like inserts to reduce noise caused by vehicles driving over the bridge’s expansion joints. Testing done by TransLink found the inserts reduced noise on the bridge deck between six and 10 decibels, while nighttime noise heard in Pitt Meadows along Wildwood Crescent dropped by more than 10 decibels. More acoustic testing will be done after the new sound barrier is built. Metro Vancouver’s regional transportation authority, however, is constantly replacing the inserts as they pop out of the joints over time. Those replacement costs are being built into the bridge’s annual maintenance.
We will perform comprehensive hearing screening for NO CHARGE for the first 30 qualified callers to determine if you are a candidate for the program.
“Here’s a perfectly good wall and it’s going to be destroyed.” Deb Walters, Pitt Meadows mayor
Patricia MacNeil, with TransLink, said staff will continue to keep the community informed about the progress. “Environmental impacts will be closely monitored and managed throughout the demolition and construction period, as well,” she added. Although Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters welcomes the new sound barrier, she wishes cash-strapped TransLink had got it right the first time round. “I am very frustrated that they are ripping it down,” said Walters. “Here’s a perfectly good wall and it’s going to be destroyed. It’s just roll the windows down and throw the money out of the window and we’ll build a new one. It’s very frustrating, especially when we talk about finding funding for TransLink.” In addition to complaints about noise, the Southern Pitt Meadows Residents Association still has concerns about drainage problems related to bridge construction that they want addressed.
Candidates will be selected Friday, February 1 to Wednesday, May 15

The biggest wall The wall TransLink built to buffer Pitt Meadows residents from the sounds of roaring traffic on the Golden Ears Bridge is too small – not high enough. Now it has to be replaced, meaning taxpayers have to pay for this wall twice. This comes from TransLink, which seems to be crying constantly about a lack of money. The organization seems to be hard of hearing, as well. Pitt residents raised the issue of noise well before the Golden Ears Bridge was constructed. They pushed for sinus plates, requested a higher wall, but were ignored. TransLink instead constructed a wall that was shorter than the large semi-trailers that criss-cross the span daily. As a result, residents hear a constant din, croaks and burps each time a heavy truck crosses the bridge. Derek Thorkelson, a professor of Earth Sciences at Simon Fraser University and a Wildwood Crescent resident, wanted interlocking expansion joints on the bridge. He studied them and figures they would provide the best acoustical outcome. But TransLink instead went with a flawed design of glued-in rubber strips between existing joints, which, after a few months, pop out and lie strewn on the bridge deck. Residents are still paying the price – with disturbed sleeps and daytime annoyance. There is no money currently set aside for sinus plate installation. But the wall will be replaced, 1.5 metres higher than the existing one, for $817,000. And regional mayors want to add a new tax to help fund TransLink? If TransLink had done a little more homework during the consultation phase for bridge, had it not cut corners to save a few dollars, had it actually listened to residents, it would have saved everyone money in the end, not to mention the frustration of trying to right a wrong. What a waste, of money and energy. As Pitt Meadows Mayor Deb Walters said, do the job right the first time. – The News

A path and footbridge to a plan I
n February, the peach tree on the south side of my house alerts me to the approach of spring. New buds swell, then burst fearlessly into blossom. I wait for nature’s signals before launching a kayak on the Alouette River. This year, incessant rain made me im- Along the Fraser Jack Emberly patient. A rare sunny day arrived. It was the middle of winter, but I loaded the kayak and set out. A paddler’s hands go numb in frigid water. I breathed on them to get the circulation going, then looked for life. Apart from a few merganzers, there wasn’t any. But the dikes were buzzing with sun-seekers: joggers, cyclists, horseback riders, dog walkers, and Ted and Matti. The couple sat in buggies that looked like harness rigs at race tracks, but small enough for hobbits. They had fat tires, and were pulled by miniature horses. “Do those things have a name?” I shouted. “Hyperbikes,” replied Ted. “A guy in Oregon makes them. Lots of fun.” I take a camera on the Alouette – a suggestion from smirking DFO officers in Langley, the guys who refused several times to investigate dead fish here in 2009, and will probably never have to stir themselves again, thanks to the gutted Fisheries Act, the part for steam bank disruption. ing towards ‘Big Gulp,’ the Golden Ears group’s pump, with its cavernous mouth set in a side channel. BG was quiet, but nothing prevents this thirsty girl from roaring loudly into action this spring, while we still wait for an effective water use plan for our river. There’s still no blossoms on my tree, but community groups in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows aren’t waiting to launch plans for 2013. On Feb. 25, the Haney Farmers Market’s AGM will honor 15 volunteers. Opening day is May 11, Mother’s Day. “We going to have a demonstration of medieval times from the Society for Creative Anachronisms,” says manager, Eileen Dwillies. These folks, draped in chain mail, duke it out with swords like Richard the Third of England, whose bones were discovered under a parking lot. Last year, there were 150 vendors including new faces. “We’ve encouraged the young farmers with two to five acres,” says Dwillies. Farm for Life, a working farm in its second year, involves several young farmers whose plans for 2013 have already begun. “The farm-y items on the to-do list today,” they write, are “complete third cold frame, plant broad bean seeds in pots, clean out chicken coop, move poopy hay ... ” Dwillies thinks we’re overdue for a district food policy like Vancouver’s that promotes small vegetable growers. “We have a lot of giant farms in the Fraser Valley, but you can’t live on cranberries and blueberries if there’s a crash.” On Feb. 2, Meadow Ridge School invited 40 friends of the environment to help

enhance Latimer Creek. It’s a stream on their property that hosts hundreds of chum spawners. The stream study will promote environmental stewardship by students. Ross Davies of KEEPS has set up one classroom with an aquarium kit, and 55 eyed chum fry from Bell Irving Hatchery. They’ll be released in April. “It’s a decent stream with good groundwater,” says Davies. “The creek is part of a huge ecosystem,” says school staffer Daryl Lester. “By restoring and preserving this small section, we not only ensure our segment of the watershed is in good health, we allow our students to be part of the process. Hopefully they will carry this forward in their lives ... and realize each individual can make a difference.” That goal is endorsed by Paula Howarth, a faculty associate at SFU who shared information about the integrated stream study she helped establish at Harry Hooge elementary last year. “Paula had lots of good ideas,” said Lyn Tyler, the staff member who organized the meeting. “The way she worked with teachers was wonderful.” Nicole Driedger, who heads up the Adopta-Stream program for ARMS, will help with riparian restoration. ARMS will remove blackberries, an invasive species, and plant salmonberries. A path and footbridge to facilitate stream monitoring are in the work plan. “It’s all very exciting,” says Tyler. The News/letters online comments Dormitory • Claus Andrup · Chief Executive Officer at OHG Resources Inc.: Re: Maple Ridge stands at industrial crossroads (mapleridgenews.com). Sandy [Macdougall], I believe that the Pelton property is in Maple Ridge, not Pitt Meadows. Other than that, you are spot on with your sentiments. Maple Ridge, for better or worse, has chosen its ‘dormitory community’ path. It cannot alter its course now, and, by accounts, never will.
Good luck • Dave Davison: Re: Skydivers fed up with Pitt Meadows airport (mapleridgenews.com). I moved to Pitt Meadows to be close to Pacific Skydivers and have lived here for over 14 years. I have made many good friend here over the years and consider them a part of my family. It’s sad that one person could bring this all to a close and the local mayor could just stand by and not intervene even though she sits on the airport board. With the closure of Pacific Skydivers I see no reason to stay and support your community any longer and have decided to move to a more desirable area. All the best in the next election mayor.
Frustrating side of conservation Editor, The News: According to consultant Catherine Berris, people in Maple Ridge are happy with local stream protection regulations. Berris, a municipal consultant, could have qualified that claim by adding that it mostly applies only to people who don’t own land encumbered by municipal policies on stream setbacks. It seems all kinds of folks are in favour of preserving something as long as it isn’t located on their own property. Everyone, including developers, wants to preserve those precious amenities that make Maple Ridge a special place to live, but municipal policies
are making it increasingly difficult to pay the tariff on all the bells and whistles required by Maple Ridge through the development process. While I have absolutely no vested interest in any development, I do appreciate and enjoy the benefits of living in an area blessed with dozens of streams and mountainous terrain. But the ever-widening municipal requirements for stream protection and other bureaucratic demands are placing an unfair financial burden on private land owners, subsequent developers and the end purchasers of homes. The confusing array of varying regulations and attendant
costs imposed by federal, provincial and municipal bodies on the subject of stream protection and other requirements relegates private property owners to the back seat in favour of bureaucratic demands. While Couns. Al Hogarth and Mike Morden seem to recognize the unfair and questionable imposition of stream setbacks that vary from five metres required under agricultural land reserve policies to the 30-metre requirements under municipal development guidelines, there is not much hope that any of the existing requirements will be altered or lessened. Application of official com-
munity plan policies can and frequently does impose many entirely unfair burdens on property owners and stream protection setbacks is just one of them. Designated school or park sites and conservation areas can also be very frustrating to the land owners involved, developers and home purchasers. If you want a good example, just ask residents in Silver Valley, who have been waiting more than a decade for schools, parks, sidewalks and other amenities promised in the community plan but still not forthcoming. A good deal on farmland for municipal and provincial governments? Editor, The News: Re: Why foreign workers? (Letters, Feb. 13), Money keeps land in shape (Letters, Feb. 13). If it was not for foreign workers a lot of farm work would not be done because nobody wants to do the work.
Come summer and haying, you can not get workers. That is why farmers need bigger and more expensive machinery so at least they can do the work and work long days. Like Lance Felgnar’s suggestion, let the city or govern-

workers. We have 10 acres. What’s that worth, about $12 million? That is peanuts compared to what land not in the ALR goes for. Geeske de Boer Pitt Meadows

Parking still greatest concern Suites from front
Several display boards walked residents through the ongoing consultation process and current requirements. One listed safety, parking, affordability and infrastructure capacity as major issues. For realtor Danny Gerbrandt, secondary suites are crucial to the housing market. Many buyers wouldn’t be able to qualify for mortgages without having the income from a suite in the basement. If the district clamps down on illegal suites, it would hurt the local housing market, he said. Gerbrandt added about
a quarter of the small-lot homes in Albion in the 240th Street area have suites, though zoning doesn’t allow that. Secondary suites in Maple Ridge are only allowed on lots larger than 557 sq. metres (6,000 sq. feet), although temporary residential units for family members are allowed on smaller lots. And most in the consultation process are saying they don’t favour allowing second suites on smaller lots, such as in Albion, added planning director Christine Carter. Gerbrandt suggested one way to encourage
people to register their suites is to relax enforcement and reduce inspection fees. Requiring new homes to be built secondarysuite ready, so that a homeowner easily could add a suite, would create better secondary suites, added realtor Jim Isherwood. “At least it will be safe for the public.” He said that another way of preserving the neighbourhoods where secondary suites are located is to limit the amount of on-street parking. Requiring residents to have parking permits, and limiting the number issued

per household, will help limit the number of people living in secondary suites, Isherwood added. In order to increase affordability, the district needs to increase floorarea ratio, and thus the density for projects so Maple Ridge can match what’s happening in other cities in the Lower Mainland, added Rob Grimm, a developer. Don Mitchell, a resident, favoured the requirement to have owners live in the premises where the suites are located, but said that’s not happening in many areas. While many homeowners don’t want to register their suites, safety and financial security make compelling arguments to do so. Bylaws director Liz Holitzki said insurance companies may not cover for fire damage of homes with illegal suites. “We always recommend people talk to their insurance companies to find out.” Some of the requirements of the current secondary suite bylaw, passed in 1999, are for thicker drywall to separate the house from the suite, a separate heating and ventilation system (with a second furnace), a separate entrance, as well as a sprinkler system. A parking stall also has to be provided on the property. Homeowners also have to pay double the utility charges for water and sewer. Maple Ridge planner Diana Hall said the review is an attempt to improve the bylaw. “Parking has been by far the greatest concern.” Staff will write a report, compiling the feedback then present it to council.

More applications for ‘mega-homes’ by M o ni s ha M a r tin s staff reporter
A flurry of requests to construct large houses on farmland has the City of Pitt Meadows revisiting a plan to restrict the size of homes in the provincially protected agricultural reserve. Staff presented a report to council Tuesday to apprise members about several building permit applications for houses that could easily be turned into mini apartments. “The issue, as stated in the report, is that staff have misgivings that the homes will not be single-family residences, which is a contravention of our zoning bylaw and [agricultural land commission] regulations,” said the city’s director of operations Kim Grout. She stressed that the city wasn’t revisiting the “farm home plate” bylaw, which seeks to clusters residential uses on properties, to preserve

Ridge Meadows RCMP have partnered with St. John Therapy Dogs. This gives local police and victim services another referral agency to assist citizens who have experienced a traumatic event. The local St. John therapy dogs have been used on a regular basis at Ridge Meadows Hospital in the emergency ward, as well as seniors homes and care facilities, the Caring Place, and a new program being introduced in the Pitt Meadows library called ‘Reading Tails’. These trained dogs have calmed people when they’ve been presented with a possible life-changing event, such as a death in their immediate family.
“Having the St. John therapy dog program as a referral agency is a good partnership,” said Insp. David Fleugel. “Anytime we can offer a service that will assist our citizens, the RCMP is always interested. We are very pleased to announce them as one of our community partners.” • For more information on the therapy dog program, visit www. sja.ca/bc.

Families will have to help each other T
here was an article last week that encouraged Canadians to save twice as much for retirement as they have been planning to do. This is primarily because interest rates are giving such terrible returns that savings will deplete quickly when the principle has to be used in a much higher proportion to pay for expenses. And while you’re at it, you might want to keep working past age 65. Good advice, but a bit late for those who planned, for the last 40 years, to live off the interest from the savings they now have with the expectation of reasonable returns of five to 10 per cent. At this stage, it’s difficult, or perhaps more accurately, impossible, for them to either save more or get a job after 65. In fact, this newly minted generation of elderly Baby Boomers has been raised on the notion of getting a lot of benefits that are now questionable. Many companies with private pension plans have disappeared, and the benefits with them. Universal health care has been replaced by inaccessible health care. Homes for the elderly have been replaced by waiting lists for homes for the elderly. I am stating, of course, the most cynical view you hear about services for the elderly these days. But bad news travels faster and
gets more traction with the media than good news, so there are plenty of scary stories out there for the elderly to hear and worry about. It’s almost As we age cruel for the Graham Hookey media to carry such sensationalized reports on the news regularly. Since most of the elderly watch the news religiously, they are susceptible to this kind of fearmongering and stew about their future burdens. We are challenged, unquestionably, by a huge generation of elderly who are coming into the most needy stage of their lives at just the time our governments are pinched for cash, our infrastructure is stretched to its limits and our economy is making it difficult for young people to gain employment and pay their part into the social contract that the elderly accepted in their youth. The contract was simple. You pay taxes and pension fees now and government programs will look after you later. The problem is that much of what was paid was spent or wasted a long time ago, and with a small generation in a sluggish
economy trying to support the expenses at the other end of the contract, there’s a big challenge ahead. Perhaps the scariest part is how little the recently-turned-elderly generation has saved in preparation. Many of them actually did believe they’d be taken care of in perpetuity and never took saving for the future too seriously. I have told my sons, who are now young men, to think about saving with the understanding that you might have to take care of yourself in your retirement years with no support at all. In that way, any support that you get later is a bonus. But in the interim, you put money away early and let the earnings compound rather than wait until you’re 65 to start looking for a greeter’s job in a local store or serve coffee in fast food outlet. Of course, I’ve also told them that when or if they get to a stage of buying real estate, to let me know so that I can invest some of my shrinking savings in a place with an in-law apartment in the basement. That’s right, families are going to have to help each other out a bit when these challenges come home to roost, and I, for one, am being particularly nice to the boys these days. Transformational forgiveness beginning. It is a parent’s worst nightmare to deal with the tragic death of a child at an age still full of life, hopes and dreams. Ann was still alive when emergency crews arrived that afternoon; she would remain on life support, unresponsive for several days until her parents decided to let her go. As Andy sat with his daughter in the hospital, he kept hearing her voice, “Forgive him, forgive him.” Andy didn’t think that he could ever forgive anyone for this, even Conor, someone that had grown to be part of
Ac t s of Fait h by Bradley Christianson-Barker
Two years ago, 19-yearold Conor shot and killed his 19-year-old fiancée, Ann. Conor had never been in serious trouble before that day. It was the final moment of an argument and fight that had stretched over the course of three days. It ended with Ann on her knees with a shotgun in her face. Conor then turned himself into the police. That is not the story to be told today, only the
the family, someone he loved. It wasn’t possible, not realistic, too much to ask. Yet he kept hearing her voice, “Forgive him.” It was his faith that finally allowed Andy to listen to her voice. It was Christ’s call for him to listen that allowed him to begin the process of healing and forgiveness. If only we could all hear that call, the world would be a different place. While Ann was still in the hospital on life support, Kate visited her daughter’s murderer in jail with a message of forgiveness, and the two cried together. Her faith led her to a place Conor never deserved and could never earn.

True Christ-like forgiveness and compassion by Andy and Kate paved the way for a healing process unprecedented in our court system. A restorative justice process seeks to open the lines of communication between the offender, the victim, and their community. Justice then is restored through accepting responsibility, making amends and forgiveness rather than traditional punitive measures. Andy and Kate were called to forgive, and with exceptional compassion, they refused to define Conor by this one moment, or allow their daughter to be defined by that single moment.

host Marauders favoured in weekend playoffs by Nei l Corbe tt staff reporter
The Pitt Meadows Marauders will host the Fraser Valley North triple A basketball semi-finals tonight against the Heritage Woods. If they win – and they didn’t lose a game through a perfect 10-0 regular season – then they will play for the league championship Saturday, again with home court advantage. Pitt’s playoff opener on Wednesday
was a 66-33 doubling of Centennial. Jordan Rich led the scoring with 20 points, and Sebastien Marshall had 14. While Pitt coach Rich Goulet noted that his team’s offensive play was inconsistent, he was happy with the defence that limited Centennial’s scoring for long stretches. The game against Heritage Woods tips off at 7:45 p.m. In the other league semi-final, the Terry Fox Ravens will take on the Gleneagle Talons.
“That’s not going to be an easy game,” predicts Goulet, noting the Talons are capable of upsetting the Ravens. The winners of the semi-finals will meet at Pitt Meadows secondary on Saturday at 7:45 p.m. While all eight playoff teams from the North Zone will be advancing to the 32-team Fraser Valley Tournament, Goulet said a good placing in league is important, because seeding for the tournament will be critical. “If you don’t get a good seed, you’re
in trouble,” said Goulet. “The Fraser Valley is a tough place to play.” The Fraser Valley includes the province’s top-four ranked teams in the Yale Lions (Abbotsford), Walnut Grove Gators, Tamanawis Wildcats (Surrey) and White Rock Christian Warriors respectively. There are also 10 teams that are ranked in either the province’s Top 10 or as honourable mentions. Pitt is presently ranked 10th. That tournament will be held Feb. 20-23, and will see eight teams qual-
ify and ranked for the provincials. The B.C. tournament will be held March 12-16 at the Langley Events Centre. The other two local triple A teams have been eliminated from postseason play. The Robert Bateman Timberwolves beat Westview Wildcates 6662, and the Chilliwack Frontiersmen beat the Maple Ridge Ramblers 6540 on Wednesday at Yale secondary in the playoff opener for the Fraser Valley East.

Strategies to help you get moving Sedentary people should think about ways to build more exercise into their daily routines
T
here is agreement among researchers in exercise physiology and nutrition about the benefit of consistent cardiovascular exercise and healthy diet. Reductions in risk factors for obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and some cancers have been seen. In recent years the benefit of exercise has been shown to be increased with increasing intensity and higher heart rate and effort level. But people who are starting exercise and have been sedentary for a long time not only find difficult and uncomfortable to exercise at moderate to higher intensities, it may be dangerous to do so if they have complicating medical conditions like pre-existing cardiovascular problems. Here are some strategies and solutions for beginners to become more active and less sedentary. Walking can be a great way
to get moving and improve your fitness. Targets of 10,000 steps per day have been promoted as having beneficial effects at reducing blood pressure and body mass. In one study walking 10,000 steps at a leisurely pace produced some of these modest changes in the body, but researchers found that if 2,000 to 4,000 of these steps were taken at brisk pace the health benefits increased in number and degree. Having a pedometer can help keep track of how much walking you are doing during the day and can help keep you focussed on your goals. Another strategy is to make use of everyday movement opportunities. Here are some other ideas to help you move more. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. If the building at work has many floors take the stairs part way up, and then use the elevator for the remainder to start with and then increase the number of floors walked over time. The same applies with taking transit. If you take the bus or train, get off one stop early and walk the rest of the way to

He said the goal is to go into Aldergrove on Monday and Wednesday and earn a split. “It’s going to be an entertaining series.” Johnson said his club respects the Flames. “I wish Ridge Meadows a good series – they’ve got a talented hockey club, and the coaches

Onni brings mix of homes to False Creek
Block 100 a taste of waterfront living Onni is bringing a taste of waterfront living to its newest development, Block 100. With 231 homes, Block 100 will include a mix of condominiums and townhomes, with a variety of floorplans. The development consists of three blocks: Quebec, Centre and Main. Located in southeast False Creek, Block 100 is perfectly situated for homeowners of all demographics. Whether you want to walk to Rogers Arena to catch a Vancouver Canucks game or grab a water taxi to Granville Island, you’re just minutes away from everything you can imagine. The Seawall is right outside, and the Central Valley Greenway begins on your
doorstep. Wide-plank laminate flooring throughout the main living areas is standard, while stainless-steel appliances and composite countertops with a breakfast bar in most homes are convenient and modern. The white gloss backsplash cabinetry offers plenty of storage. The bathrooms are luxurious and soothing, with heated porcelain tile floors, a linear-style deep soaker tub with a tiled front and a frameless glass shower and door with mosaic-tiled base and high-gloss wall tile. Homes start at $268,900. For more information visit onni.com/block100 or call 604-682-8801.
This year the GVHBA has also included a People’s Choice Award, which will allow people to vote for their favourite new or renovated project. There are 19 projects up for the award.
The winners will be announced at the awards gala on April 20. For more information, to see a full list of finalists and to vote for the People’s Choice Award, visit www.ovationawards.ca.

Designing, assessing your garden F
ebruary is a great time to sit down and assess what you did or didn’t like about your garden. The reason being that there are few flowering distractions about to taint your reason and you have to rely strictly on memory. Sometimes it is best Gardening to completely renoMike Lascelle vate an unsatisfactory landscape than it is to tinker with it over the years, trying to get the look you want. So if you think you might be one of those gardeners ready to take that big step, here’s a little advice to guide you in the right direction. • Assess your needs: the biggest mistake most people make is to assume that a landscape is all about wants and not about needs. Nothing could be further from the truth. To avoid this pitfall, you need to list everything that you use your property for. When doing this, you need to consider such things as vehicle parking, RV or boat storage, children’s play areas, entertaining outdoors, privacy issues, vegetable or fruit growing, night lighting and security concerns. This will help you uncover some of the hidden aspects of landscaping (bylaws, storage needs, proper access), which are important factors to consider at the outset of the design process. Once your needs are assessed, you are
ready to detail them on a garden-use plan. • Creating a garden-use plan: a gardenuse plan is simply a rough top-view sketch detailing the property borders, buildings, existing trees/hedges and garden features. Once these particulars are penciled in, label the empty areas with suggested uses such as patio, lawn, perennial bed, pedestrian access. The main purpose of a garden-use plan is
to put your abstract ideas on paper so that they can be shared with others (contractor or designer) who may be involved in the garden transformation. • Make a practical wish list: unless you live on acreage, you are not likely to be able to fit every plant you want into the average urban city lot – so start picking favourites. When it comes to trees, try to limit your

numbers as these shade-out the garden below and compete for light and nutrients, which will limit your palette and the potential for sun-loving species or vegetable gardens. You will also want to have plant groupings (both heather and blue fescue grass look odd as solitary specimens) and some repetition as far as foliage colour is concerned. At the very least, try not to design a ‘botanical garden style’ landscape with one of each species because even places like VanDusen use a lot of repetition and mass planting to tie the overall design together. • Plan for four seasons: we live in one of the few places in Canada where we can actually have year-round colour. Right now, witch hazels (hamamelis) are in full fragrant bloom and even though they mature into large arching shrubs with rather boring summer foliage (although they all have beautiful autumn tones), you can take advantage of this by underplanting them with a low evergreen shrub such as leucothoe ‘scarletta,’ which is a brilliant burgundy-red for most of the season. • Make it personal: far too often designers or those friends who volunteer to help us, impose their own tastes on the landscapes they are helping to create. A designer is there to listen to your needs and wants, and help you create a garden that is both practical and aesthetically pleasing to you – because, after all, you have to look at it every day.
