ny Wednesday afternoon. Clad in a threepiece suit, his face and neck showing prominent tattoos, Shank outlined his life, consisting of childhood, crime and jail. “I’ve never had a legitimate job,” he said. Shank signed on as a police agent in 2010.

Wearing a recording device supplied by RCMP, he is expected to testify that he conspired with Lorne Carry, Colin Correia and Lonnie Adams, who are charged with conspiracy to murder a rival in the East Kootenay drug trade.

A second cull of up to 30 mule deer will be carried out in Cranbrook, the city announced on Thursday. Council made the decision “after much careful deliberation”, reads the statement released by corporate communications officer Chris Zettel. “Due to concerns around public safety raised both by the RCMP and council, the city will not at this time be providing any additional details surrounding the population reduction activities,” reads the statement. It refers to the population

Karla Shally, owner of the Playpen, saw the need for such an initiative during her career as a police officer in Calgary, where she saw such stickers and realized how useful they could be. “I had seen these (stickers) on doors and at people’s homes in Calgary,” Shally said. “I did some research and thought it would be a good service and something people would want here.” A local printer produced the stickers, and the Playpen will be selling them for a donation (minimum $5 each). The fundraiser will continue for approximately nine months and all of the proceeds will go to local animal rescue agencies. The Playpen will donate the funds during Fire Prevention Week in October 2013. Shally said the Playpen has always supported local animal rescue agencies, such as the SPCA in Cranbrook and ICAN (Invermere Animal Companion Network). Canada Post is denying a media report that it’s considering cutting its delivery schedule from the current five days a week. The Crown corporation says it continues to look at ways to save money as the mail delivery business declines. CTV News reported Wednesday that Canada Post was considering cutting deliveries to four, or even three days a week. But Canada Post says it’s not going to make any major changes to its operations at this time. Canadian Press

Cranbrook firefighters kick in for new Centre Joint donations from eight locals across the province total $675,000 for new Burn Fund Centre

The dream is that much closer to reality, and the Cranbrook Fire Department is helping it on its way. Firefighters from Cranbrook this week journeyed to Vancouver to donate $25,000 towards the new $13.1 million Burn Fund Centre. The Cranbrook donation is earmarked to help build the kitchen facility on the third floor of the buildling, which itself is to be built by the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund. The Burn Fund Centre will be located at 3891 Main Street in Vancouver. The Cranbrook firefighters were joined by locals from Burnaby, Delta, Kamloops, Kelowna, North Vancouver District, Richmond and Surrey, for total contributions of $675,000. “We’ve seen firsthand that helping with accommodation for burn and trauma survivors and their families can be one of the most significant contributions to help survivors physically and emotionally recover and live a full life,” said Mike Hurley, President of the Burn Fund. “We’re so grateful that the Firefighters in Cranbrook have shown

the British Columbia Professional Firefighters Burn Fund stated that the province is ex-

periencing a critical shortfall in accommodation for burn and trauma patients and their

family caregivers. “Patients’ health may be compromised when they

have to return home sooner than medically advised or live in accommodations not suited to recovery from a burn or trauma,” the release said. “Each year almost 700 children and adults from across the province are admitted to the BCPFF Burn, Plastic and Trauma Unit at Vancouver General Hospital and BC Children’s Hospital suffering serious trauma.” Cases from outside the Lower Mainland make up 27 per cent of cases, and 60 per cent of those are paying for private sector accommodation for an average of eight weeks. The new $13.1 million Burn Fund Centre will provide eight short-term stay units to meet the critical shortfall in appropriate accommodation for burn and trauma patients and their family caregivers. The Centre will also house the offices of the BC Professional Fire Fighters Association and Burn Fund and include ground floor retail space to help fund the ongoing operation of the building. The Burn Fund has secured 80 per cent of necessary funding and is currently in the midst of a capital campaign.

School District given reprieve from budget cut Minister of Education responds to outrage over Cooperative Gains Mandate

School boards will not be required to find 1.5 per cent savings in their 2012 budgets to fund salary increases for support staff. The news came in a letter to all B.C. school district board chairs from Education Minister Don McRae on January 23, 2013. “You have indicated to me quite clearly that in light of budget uncertainties and the timing of district budget processes that savings cannot be generated without either reducing service levels or transferring costs to the public,” Minister McRae wrote in the letter, adding that the boards’ unwillingness to cut their budgets will be relayed to the Minister of Finance and the B.C. Public School Employers’ Association. “I expect that the Minister will direct that any improvements to support staff wages and benefits be achieved through offsetting savings

found within the collective agreement. There must not be any incremental cost to boards or the province as a result of collective agreements,” wrote McRae. School District 5 board chair Frank Lento called McRae’s letter a reversal following the unanimous rejection of the government’s directive by school boards across the province. “I don’t think they had a choice. I think it was overwhelming. I think every district in the province wrote letters similar to what we did,” said Lento. The local school board spoke out last month against the Ministry of Education’s directive to all B.C. boards that they revisit their 2012 budget and find a 1.5 per cent savings to cover salary increases for support staff – all school district staff outside administration. The directive was sent in a December letter from Minister McRae. It stated that under the Cooperative Gains

But the Southeast Kootenay school board completed its budget in June 2012, and began negotiations this month for its 2013 budget. “It’s like asking our Parent Advisory Council to do pizza and hotdog fundraisers to fund our support staff,” Lento said at the time. The Ministry’s decision to look elsewhere for the 1.5 per cent savings is a relief,

ucation of our children so that each has the tools to succeed in the future economy.” Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett said he is disappointed by School District 5’s statement. “Asking school boards to find 1.5 per cent savings in their large budgets is not putting anything on the backs of students. It is asking an elected, accountable board to apply its collective mind to whether there are better ways to do things, something individual British Columbians and businesses, and the provincial government, must do on a daily basis,” Bennett told the Townsman this week. Rejecting the Minister’s directive is placing pressure on taxpayers, Bennett went on. “It is the easiest thing in the world to say is that government should spend more money and find someplace else to control spending. The government is the sum of all

taxpayers and the board has essentially thumbed its nose at those taxpayers,” he said. “Unfortunately, with the boards’ decision, negotiations with school support staff will contain no opportunity for workers to find savings in budgets and build wage or benefit increases on the basis of those savings,” he said. Minister McRae has “graciously accepted” the boards’ decision, Bennett continued. “To characterize the Minister’s empathic approach to this difficult challenge as reversing himself, is unnecessary and disrespectful,” he said. But Frank Lento said the boards’ decision was simply about encouraging education. “Education is an investment to be maximized, not a cost to be controlled by a government,” he said. VICTORIA – Youthful members of the Tla’amin First Nation fought back tears Thursday as they joined elders and provincial officials to celebrate the end of a long road to a treaty with B.C. and Canada. The Tla’amin treaty was introduced in the B.C. legislature for consideration Thursday after a narrowly approved ratification vote by Tla’amin members in the community north of Powell River last summer. The Tla’amin (formerly Sliammon) treaty is the eighth modern-day agreement reached in B.C., most of which was left with treaties unresolved when agreements covering the rest of the country east of the Rocky Mountains were signed in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Tla’amin Chief Clint Williams noted that he was part of the treaty society that began negotiations under the new B.C. Treaty Commission process in 1994. Adoption of a new constitution means the band’s name will formally change from Sliammon to Tla’amin, dispensing

with the historical name assigned to the community by federal officials long ago. “The Sliammon people will be allowed to prosper now, will not be held down by the shackles of the dreaded Indian Act,” Williams said. “The only way is up from here for the Tla’amin people.” The final agreement calls for a capital transfer of $29.7 million, economic development funding totalling $6.9 million and more than 8,000 hectares of treaty land transferred in fee simple title. The land includes 1,900 hectares of former Tla’amin reserve land and 6,405 hectares of provincial Crown land. Cash payments are provided by the federal government. Since the Nisga’a treaty was established in 2000 outside the B.C. process, the B.C. Treaty Commission has produced treaties with five communities negotiating jointly as the MaaNulth First Nations on Vancouver Island, the Tsawwassen First Nation in the Lower Mainland and the Yale First Nation in the Fraser Canyon. The Yale treaty is still awaiting approval by the federal parliament.

City of Cranbrook announces second deer cull Continued from page 1 “The city will not at this time be providing any additional details surrounding the population reduction activities. The city will provide a comprehensive review to the public once these activities have been completed,” reads the statement. Yesterday, the B.C. Deer Protection Coalition took out a full-page advertisement in the Townsman, stating “Will Cranbrook kill deer this winter? Rumour says yes.” The advertisement asks Cranbrook residents to call or email the organization if it sees a trap set in the community.“If you have a trap in close proximity to your property, grant us access to your property so we can

monitor the traps during the night,” reads the advertisement. Colleen Bailey, a spokesperson for the Humane Treatment of Urban Wildlife, which is a member of the B.C. Deer Protection Coalition said the group is against the city’s decision. “We condemn the assertion that public safety is at risk if the city releases any details of the cull. We assert that this is simply being used as an excuse to conduct the entire operation under the cover of secrecy. Opponents of the cull have simply exercised their democratic right to be part of an open and transparent decision making process and this right was removed by council when it held secret

meetings and heard from deputants of its own choice,” said Bailey. “We will continue to reach out to the community to tell us where traps are set and we are committed to monitoring the traps during this cull period.” Last April, council approved a second cull of up to 50 deer in Cranbrook. However, Mayor Wayne Stetski told the Townsman in October that the second cull had been put on hold pending legal action over Invermere’s cull. “(Invermere) has been taken to court over the public involvement process that was used by council to make the decision to cull 100 deer in Invermere’s case. That process that Invermere used is the same one that all of us

Agent says he lived by crime when not in jail Continued from page 1 In the witness box, Shank testified he lived by the proceeds of crime when he wasn’t in jail. His criminal record includes for break and enter, theft, assault with a weapon and dangerous driving. Shank said he was in KRCC in early 2005, serving time for possessing a gun, when he played a lead role in starting a riot. It began when he knocked out a guard with a kettle, after being approached by other inmates. Three other correctional officers in the unit fled into a locked room when inmates started to riot. Shank testified he used two razor blades stuck into an electrical socket to start toilet rolls on fire. With the flaming rolls he started mattresses on fire, piled there by other inmates. For his part in the riot, sparked by inmate unhappiness with their food, Shank was given more than five years in jail. For more than two hours Wednesday afternoon, Shank recounted the story of his life. He was first arrested at 12. By 14, he was doing morphine pills in

an adopted home with few rules, stealing cars and breaking into homes in Calgary.

“I spent the better part of my life there (in jail) — it was in and out, basically.” John Shank Over the next two decades his criminal life continued unabated. He was a heroin addict, spending as much as $2,000 a week on the habit. “I spent the better part of my life there (in jail) — it was in and out, basically.” In jail, heroin was easier to come by at times than on the street, he said. In 2009, Shank testified he was shot twice, once in the arm and once in the leg, while collecting a drug debt. He didn’t go to a doctor. Instead, he went back to the Vancouver halfway house where he was staying, got his possessions and made an excuse to leave. He was back on the run. Shank said he eventually made his way to

Calgary, where he was doing petty crime, including stealing ATM machines from dollar stores. But he wanted more, saying he wanted to move on from the crimes he did as a teen to something bigger. Shank testified he is related to Adams through marriage. He renewed an acquaintance with the Cranbrook man because he wanted illegal work, particularly something “heavy. “I was looking along the lines of shooting somebody,” he told the 14-person jury in a matter-of-fact tone. After a Cranbrook shooting in late 2009, when an acquaintance of Adams’ was shot outside a bar in a clash by two rival gangs, Shank said he contacted Adams looking to become involved. He testified to “pursuing” Adams, looking to get out of Calgary and into violent crime. “I was insinuating (in a phone message) I had my disguise,” Shank said. “Tell me who to shoot and I’m there.” The trial is slated to continue Thursday. It is the second week in what is expected to be a three-month trial.

In November 2011, Cranbrook culled 25 urban deer — 11 white-tail and 14 mule — using clover traps. It was the first of three East Kootenay communities to carry out a cull with a license from the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. Kimberley culled 100 deer in January 2012, and Invermere was set to cull 100 deer in February 2012 before a court injunction

The Invermere Deer Protection Society started a civil suit against the District of Invermere in February 2012, claiming the district did not do enough public consultation prior to decided to carry out a call. The court injunction halted the cull for much of February, but the society’s request to extend the injunction failed and eventually Invermere was able to cull just 19 deer before its permit to euthanize 100 deer expired. According to a March 2012 issue of the Invermere Valley Echo, Columbia Valley RCMP laid charges in cases where traps were tampered with or deer released from traps during the Invermere cull.

In May, the Supreme Court of B.C. gave permission for the society’s civil suit against the district to continue. That case is still before the court. A hearing was set to be held in January, but was delayed. Despite this legal action, public safety concerns have led the city to proceed with a second cull anyway. Devin Kasakoff, a spokesperson for the Invermere Deer Protection Society, is questioning why Cranbrook council changed its mind. “Why was the mayor worried about Invermere’s court case in October 2012 and not in February 2013? Nothing has changed. Our case is moving forward,” he said in a February 14 press release.

VICTORIA — The Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal property is worth $47 million, not $20. The B.C. government has settled a dispute that had gone to court over the assessment for tax purposes of BC Ferries’ 49 ferry terminals, after an assessment appeal board reduced the value of the Horseshoe Bay property to a nominal amount. BC Ferries has been appealing the assessment value of its terminals since 2010, trying to reduce the level of municipal tax it pays for land that has few other uses than the current one. The decision to slash the value of the Horseshoe Bay land took the government and BC Ferries by surprise, said Bill Bennett, minister of community, sport and cultural development. Bennett announced Thursday that a negotiated settlement has been reached to retain most of the property tax income from BC Ferries to municipalities. West Vancouver-Sea to Sky MLA Joan McIntyre said

B.C. Assessment Authority launched court action in an effort to reverse the $20 decision, and Bennett said the agreement will put an end to that case. The agreement reduces the assessed value of the Horseshoe Bay land by 12.4 per cent, reducing the property tax bill by an estimated $32, 221. Most other properties have their assessed value reduced by about 20 per cent, under a formula agreed to both sides for the next five years. Nanaimo takes the largest reduction, with a 22 per cent cut in value

for its Departure Bay and Duke Point terminals costing $150,686. Nanaimo Mayor John Ruttan said he is pleased that the uncertainty over ferry terminal taxes has been resolved.

Dorner, Kelly and the outlaw archetype

the wake of the tragic rampage and death of ex-LAPD cop Christopher Dorner in California, social networks erupted with conspiracy theories, and cries that Dorner was a hero and a martyr who died trying to clear his name. Many people have drawn comparisons between Dorner and Australian outlaw Ned Kelly, who also died after a firefight with police, back in 1880. While there are similarities between the sequence of events for Dorner and Kelly, the men themselves were very different. Ned Kelly was born into a poor farming family in the Australian bush in 1854. The colony was a rough place to live for the poor; after Ned’s father died in 1866 he and his brothers resorted to petty thief. In 1878, a police officer came to arrest Ned’s brother Dan for such a theft. Ned was 400 kilometres away at the time. The officer made a drunken pass at Ned’s sister, and Dan wrestled him away. In the kerfuffle, the officer sustained a cut on his wrist. He went back to headquarters and claimed Ned Kelly had shot him, and a reward was put out for Kelly’s arrest. So did Ned Kelly become an outlaw. For two years, he hid in the bush, evading capture by the police who hunted him. On one occasion, they tried to trap Ned and his brother Dan, who was in exile with him, but they escaped and killed the police officers to stop them giving chase. To sustain themselves, Ned and his gang carried out robberies — which were really more like communities hiding the outlaws and giving them supplies. The gang were finally surrounded in a hotel in Glenrowan. Police began to fire, even as women and children tried to flee. Ned Kelly escaped the hotel, but his brother and friends did not, so he tried to go back for them. As he walked into the fray,

A date with destiny JANUS: Cranbrook Then & Now

James Baker lived a more academic and certainly less audacious lifestyle than his brothers Samuel and Valentine, yet he methodically carved his own lasting niche in the world. In the final analysis, it may be argued, he created the most notable legacy of all. Speaking of arguments, there was a time in Cranbrook not so very long ago when one could create a stir within a crowd simply by mentioning his name. The resulting disputes generally assumed opposing viewpoints involving the selection of the practically non-existent town of Cranbrook as the site of the CPR depot, as opposed to the well-established Townsite of Fort Steele. There were many then, and some today, who saw James Baker as a man who misused his political position and connections in order to make himself a great deal of money and then get out while the getting was good. Before coming to a decision on the subject let us consider some of the basic facts as we know them concerning James Baker. James was born in London on Jan.6 1830, the son of wealthy entrepreneur and businessman Samuel Baker. The youngest of four brothers, James appears to have taken his formal education more seriously than his siblings, who generally enjoyed a life of warfare, adventure, travel and occasional scandal. His advanced studies would come later, however. In 1845, at the age of 15, James joined Her Majesty’s Indian Navy as a midshipman. Promoted rapidly to Acting First Lieutenant, he spent time surveying the Arabian coast and suppressing the slave trade, illegal in most of the British Empire by 1833. James later transferred to the British Army, enlisting as a cornet (lowest grade of commissioned officer) with the distinguished Royal Horse Guards Blue. He was intelligent, popular and an excellent horseman and therefore performed well while in the service. He transferred once again to the 8th Hussars and was sent to the Crimea, tracing the steps of his older brother Valentine, to support the Turks in the war against England’s Russian foes. It was here that James, by a stroke of fate, appears to have avoided the deadly and soon to be famous cavalry encounter with Russian artillery that came to

James was an experienced outdoorsman who hunted and fished regularly. be known as “The Charge of the Light Brigade.” He went on to take part in other battles during the war, including Tchernaya and the siege and fall of Sevastopol, both of which saw thousands of casualties. James’ thoughts turned towards more domestic matters following the Crimean War. He retired from the army carrying the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and on Dec.14, 1855, married Miss Sarah Louisa White, with whom he had four children over the next 11 years: Alice Hyde Baker, Louis Samuel Hyde Baker, Valentine Hyde Baker and Harold Hyde Baker. As his family grew, so too did his education. James was admitted to Magdalene College in Cambridge on May 29, 1859, at the age of 29, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in 1861 and a Masters in 1865. While attending to his academic studies James exhibited a continuing interest in military affairs. During his time at Cambridge he joined the newly formed Volunteer Rifle Club as first commanding officer. In 1904, he received the honorary rank of Colonel in the organization which may account for his subsequent title of Col. James

Baker during the duration of his lifetime. His time spent in the Rifle Brigade paralleled his interest in the British army volunteer program and the education of officers, subjects upon which he wrote extensively. This in turn brought him to the notice of the Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VII) and Prince Albert (consort of Queen Victoria) who summoned him to Windsor castle to discuss his views. This in turn led indirectly to a position as private secretary to Roger Grosvenor, the 2nd Marquis of Westminster. In short James Baker found himself moving among the highest echelons of British power and in the process learning a great deal about managing large estates and the value of political influence. In 1874, he returned to Turkey where he remained for three years, during which time he compiled and published an authoritative account of the country, including a close study of its military importance in regards to the threat of war from Russia against England, an issue of some concern at the time. British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, among others, sought advice from Baker

on the subject, further establishing his position in the political hierarchy. James was also elected a member of the prestigious Athenaeum Club in London in 1882. Still very active today, the club was formed in 1824 for individuals known for scientific, literary or artistic accomplishments and includes an impressive list of members past and present. Fellow members during James’ tenure included Charles Darwin, Rudyard Kipling, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Joseph Conrad. Others over time include Charles Dickens, Cecil Rhodes, Winston Churchill, T.S. Eliot and Alex Guinness. There is no doubt that James was well ensconced in all the best that the British Empire had to offer. He was wealthy, highly-respected, and moved among the most elite of English society. Then, in 1884, at the age of 54, James Baker came to a decision. He packed up his bags and his wife and two of his sons and headed for the wilds of British Columbia for a date with a destiny he named Cranbrook. janusthenandnow@shaw.ca

A l o n g s i d e Baumgartner was Dr. Michael Gervais, a sports psychologist who helped the daredevil deal with the stress of his jump. “When he [Baumgartner] started the whole thing, he couldn’t spend more than one minute in his space suit, he freaked out, claustrophobic. So they hired Dr. Gervais and obviously it worked out well,” said McArthur. The climber worked a few connections and managed to get the doctor on the phone. “What’s holding me back is my mental game. I struggle mentally in the heat of the moment, so I have a lot of ideas on how to sort through that,” McArthur continued. “You can count on an awesome result next year, because that’s the missing link for me now. I’m just as strong as the Russians now, I can compete with them, but my mental game is holding me back.” However, he’s got a year to prepare for the Sochi Games, and he’ll be doing all kinds of physical and mental training to prepare for the event.

Even though athletes are driven to do well in competition, it’s also important to keep a little perspective, he added. “Results don’t define you and you need to hold onto that in competitive sports and you need to hold onto that at a high level, because it can ruin you,” McArthur said.

Local hockey coach reflects on his career TRE VOR CR AWLEY Sports Editor

A local hockey personality will be inducted into the 2013 class of the B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame in a ceremony in July, joining a few other prestigious names. Colin Patterson has played and coached at various levels throughout his life locally and abroad, joins a 2013 class that includes—among others—Mark Recchi Paul Kariya, Marc Crawford and the 1994 and 1995 Kamloops Blazers teams.

“I think it’s an honour and well-deserved on all their parts,” said Patterson, on his fellow inductees. “Just to be in the B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame under the category of builder/coach is an honour for sure, because there are a lot of great people that have been inducted in past years and there will be a lot more inducted in future years.” Patterson grew up playing minor hockey in Kimberley and Cranbrook, and played a year at the now defunct Notre Dame University College

out of Nelson. From there, he received a scholarship and went on to NCAA hockey with Michigan Tech, helping the team win a championship in 1965. “That was quite an honour and being able to play with a lot of great players down there too, and under great coaching,” Patterson said. Patterson was in a familiar place with Michigan, as his brother played there a few years prior, along with a few other local players from the Cranbrook region.

After his time with Michigan Tech, Patterson came back home for a year with the Kimberley Dynamiters, before heading out to the University of Calgary, where he finished a degree in education. After that, Patterson went international and headed over to Switzerland and got behind the bench as a coach. “It was a great opportunity to coach over there and that was my first sort of inclination that I might want to keep coaching,” Patterson said. “I was

there for two years and came back to Cranbrook and ended up getting a job with the school district and also then started coaching the Cranbrook Colts in Junior B.” Patterson’s school district position put him in Laurie Middle School, where he stayed for 30 years teaching mathematics. He met and married his wife, Janet, and began a family that grew to three sons—Brad, Shane and Jeff.

Two Cranbrook athletes were part of a record-breaking medal count at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in PyeongChang, Korea earlier in February. Jonathan Robins and Erin Thom represented their city, province and country as Team Canada smashed it’s record by tallying 109 medals— eight more than the previous record set in 2009. Robins competed in alpine skiing and captured a bronze medal and also finished sixth in giant slalom, while Thom took a silver in advanced giant slalom and a bronze medal in advanced super G. This was Robins’ first time competing in the Olympics after 12 years of skiing with the local branch of Special Olympics. After the first day of practice, Robins was bumped up from intermediate to advanced

We are so proud of them and of their dedicated coaches.” Robins and Thom will keep themselves busy with their sporting endeavours over the next few months and into the summer. The two will be joined by Jesse Jensen, Neil Rye, Kendall Salanski and Roxanna Podrasky at a Snow Sports Festival in Kelowna at the beginning of March. The local Special Olympic branch will also be participating in the provincial Summer Games in Langley in July. The Summer Games softball team will have a few additions, with bowler Corinna MacKay and swimmers Lincoln Harrison and Mark Skelton joining the group.

OTTAWA - The season just got a lot more difficult for the Ottawa Senators. The Senators will be without star defenceman Erik Karlsson for the rest of the year. The Norris Trophy winner underwent surgery Thursday to repair his left Achilles tendon, which was cut by a skate blade during a game

Wednesday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Senators general manager Bryan Murray said Thursday the surgery went well but 70 per cent of Karlsson’s tendon was cut. Recovery is expected to be at least three-to-four months, thus ending Karlsson’s season. “It was a clean cut and recovery is expected to be 100 per cent,”

Murray said. “But it does mean his year finishes at this time.” Murray had the opportunity to speak to Karlsson, saying the player felt he “got directed and got cut with a skate that shouldn’t be where it was.” Karlsson, 22, was injured while being checked by Pittsburgh’s Matt Cooke. The Penguins player lifted his leg in what appeared to

be an attempt to pin Karlsson against the boards but his skate blade struck the Senators’ player right above his skate boot. Karlsson immediately slumped to the ice and was in obvious pain as he attempted to get up. The NHL’s Department of Player safety reviewed the incident and felt no supplementary discipline was required.

Patterson juggled his day job as a teacher with coaching the Colts, and he also began to get involved with the B.C. Amateur Hockey Association, helping out on the coaching development end of things. During his association with BCHA, he twice took a team to the Canadian Winter Games and helped out with the selection process for a couple national U17 and U18 teams. One of Patterson’s biggest contributions to the game came when he authored a series of lesson plans in the late 1970s that have were put to use by the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association, an organization that merged into Hockey Canada in 1994. It started at the behest of Bob Nicholson, the current president of Hockey Canada, who was the development coordinator for B.C. at the time. “He talked me into it,” said Patterson. “It took quite a while, but it has been quite successful and I’m sure it’s helped out a lot of coaches not just across B.C., but right across Canada and I think it’s gone into the U.S. and I know they use it over in England.” The plan consists of four booklets that detail all kinds of resources for coaches such as drills and materials for those drills. Each of the 20 lesson plans contained within are different and as coaches and hockey players advance through the booklets, the drills get more complex in

order to build, strengthen and develop new skills. Patterson went international again in the 1980s, when Dave King, who was the head coach of Team Canada’s Spengler Cup team, invited the Cranbrookian along as a guest coach. “It was great,” said Patterson. “You couldn’t get a better teacher than Dave King and also, in that particular time, Guy Charron, who is currently coaching the Kamloops Blazers right now—he was part of their coaching staff at the time.”

He worked alongside Ryan McGill during his first tenure as head

coach from 1997-2002. McGill, who returned for his second stint with the Ice last offseason, said Patterson deserves to be recognized for his contributions to the game and that the community should be proud of his accomplishments. “The people of Cranbrook should be very proud for what he’s done not only for minor hockey in this town, but for hockey in general and his love of the game and his passion for doing anything to help people or kids or coaches or anybody within the game.” Having Patterson’s presence and hockey knowledge beside him in those early years when the Ice were starting anew in Cranbrook was invaluable, McGill added. “He always had the instincts of how to put perspective on wins and losses and always had the instincts to have that calming influence in the dressing room and on the coaches—myself in particular,” McGill said. Patterson was at the side of McGill and Cory Clouston when the team won the Memorial Cup in 2002. The same year, he retired from his teaching job at Laurie Middle School. In the later half of the 2000s, Patterson got the chance to head back over to Europe and do some coaching with teams in Holland and Britain. However, he’s now stepped back a little from the game, but keeps his nose in the WHL by joining Jeff Hollick as a colour commentator during Ice broadcasts.

What is prayer and does it really work? Christian Churches who come from a more liturgical tradition have just begun the season of Lent. It’s a season in which we reflect more intentionally on our faith and our relationship with God. It involves repentance, which means to change, to turn around. In Lent we renounce pride and embrace God’s grace. We seek to walk more humbly and faithfully with God. It is a season of renewal and transformation. Lent is a time when we engage more inten-

tionally in three spiritual practices: praying, fasting, and almsgiving. I will deal with each of those in the next three weeks. Why do we pray? There is no single answer to that question. Each person answers it slightly differently for themselves, but at the heart of it is a sense that we are not totally self–sufficient. We experience a need inside us that cannot be filled by ourselves or others. We have a longing, a holy longing and we have discovered that only God can fill it adequately.

Having said that, there are five things I do know about prayer. First, none of us knows exactly how to pray. As I talk with people, they tell me that prayer is never something they get just right. We may find something that works or is comfortable for us, but I keep hearing that prayer is something 1) we keep learning and 2) that we learn best by doing. That has been my experience as well. Secondly, there is no single way to pray. It

again and again, while others say that music is prayer. There is a great tradition of contemplative prayer and meditation, while others use particular patterns of prayer. We are different people and we go through different times and circumstances. There is a multitude of different ways to pray that suit all these persons and situations. Among other things, that fact invites a measure of freedom as we try out different ways of praying.

Thirdly, prayer is a mystery. No matter how much we learn, no matter what we wonder or think, no matter what our experience, it seems like finally what happens in and during and through prayer remains a mystery. A mystery to be approached with intellect, learning, and reflection, to be sure, but just as much a mystery to be embraced through practice and experience. Fourthly, doing and being are all mixed up in prayer. What I mean by that is that when we pray, we are doing something. But I have discovered that it’s not just doing something, but it’s also a way of being. As we enter into prayer, the distinction between identity and activity falls flat. As we enter into prayer with our whole being, we are somehow changed. How we are changed remains a mystery, but when we bring to consciousness the needs of our neighbours and the needs of the world around us, we cannot help but be changed. But I’m not sure how that happens. It is part of the mystery of prayer. But I do not believe that if we just pray hard enough, or in the right way, or with enough people, then

surely God will answer. That just makes prayer feel mechanistic to me, which I have never experienced. I don’t believe that God is unchangeable. I do believe that God responds to our human situation. At the same time, I’m not sure if our prayers affect God’s disposition or action towards us. God will act as God chooses to do so. God remains fully sovereign. God will be as God will be (see the story of Moses and the burning in Exodus). Finally, to borrow from Nike, I would say just pray. When it comes to prayer, just do it. There is no small prayer. There is no wrong way to pray. There is no wasted prayer. And as we pray – contemplative or corporate, silently or aloud, with words or deeds or disposition — God is eager to hear and receive and respond to our prayers because there is, I believe, nothing more that God wants than to be in relationship with us — all of us — and for us to flourish in this life together and with each other. Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: My wife and I are having marital problems. Our issues started when I caught her lying to me and talking privately on the phone to my best friend of 12 years -- the same guy who was the best man at my wedding. After arguing for a few days, I asked her to make a sincere effort to go for counseling, and she agreed. I also asked her to stop speaking to my friend during the time we are trying to repair our marriage. She agreed to that, too. However, this guy messages her on Facebook, and she still reads his comments. We went to our first counseling session, and I felt it went well. But when we got home, I realized that she was having doubts. She finally said she had not been in love with me for five years. Annie, we have a beautiful 16-month-old baby girl. I want to repair our marriage for our child’s sake, as well as for us. What should I do? Can marriage counseling help if there’s no love? -- Dying in New York Dear New York: Marriage counseling can help if there once was love that can be recaptured, or if both parties are dedicated to making the marriage work. A compatible marriage doesn’t necessarily require passion for each other, only a commitment to the stability of the relationship. But you cannot do it alone. Please continue with counseling. If your wife wants to work on the marriage, she will come along and make the necessary effort. But if she is unwilling, the counselor will help you forge your own path. Dear Annie: Would you please define “immediate family”? My granddaughter is getting married in May. She is inviting “immediate family only,” thus excluding my daughter (her aunt) and my daughter-in-law’s sister. This is going to cause a lot of hurt feelings and might even create a split in the family. I am invited, but not my male friend of 14 years. I have talked to my son, the father of the bride, but he does not want to get involved. Our side of the family is not as large as the groom’s. My ex-husband (the grandfather) will not be attending. Why can’t my daughter take his place? What about my daughter’s husband? My relationship with my granddaughter is very close, so I don’t understand this, and it’s causing tremendous stress. Please advise. -- Gram Dear Gram: “Immediate family” refers to the bridal couple’s parents and siblings. (If the bride and groom have children, they would also be part of the immediate family.) Grandparents are usually included as “immediate family,” but not aunts, uncles, cousins, in-laws or other relatives. Your companion of 14 years should be invited because the two of you are an established couple. If your daughter is invited, her husband should be, as well. Your granddaughter gets to determine her side of the wedding list. Although we understand how painful this is for you, as long as ALL aunts, uncles and cousins are excluded, it is equitable. Dear Anne: The replies to “Your Husband,” who made excuses for his extramarital adventures, left out a third option besides suffering with no sex and having affairs. Masturbation can keep those guys who feel they will die of frustration from wandering. I used to think of masturbation as cheating on my wife, but no longer. After 50 years, we are still partners in every other way, and we still hold hands in bed. Obituaries Rozannah Inez Barrand (Bignell) March 12, 1950 February 11, 2013 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Rozannah Barrand on February 11, 2013. Rozannah was born in Sudbury, Ontario, to Inez and Ronald Bignell. She loved life and everything it had to offer, especially her

daughters and grandchildren. Rozannah leaves behind to mourn her two daughters Susan (Collin) and Leah (Robin), her great joys in her life, her grandchildren; Julissa, Alli, Jacob and Tyler. She also leaves to mourn her brothers Charlie (Leigh) and Frank (Shelly). She will always be remembered as an avid outdoors lady. She enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, cooking and canning. She was pre-deceased by her partner of many years, Lee Atwood, both of her parents, and her sister Lola. She will be sadly missed by all that knew her. A celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 283 Mission Crescent, 1:00 - 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to a charity of your choice. Norman Allan Blaine November 11, 1940 -February 7, 2013 We are saddened to announce the passing of Norman Allan Blaine (aka, “Stormin Norman” & “Blink”). He is survived by his daughter, Kristi, sonin-law, Kevin and his two very special grandchildren, Kylea and Kameron. Norm was born in Cranbrook, BC and spent many years of his life there, working for CMHC. He then moved to Kelowna BC, where he worked as assistant manager with CMHC for many years. In 2004, Norman fulfilled his life-long dream, to live on the open road. He found himself a motorhome and travelled for the next 6 years across the United States and Western Canada, with his beloved dogs in tow. Norm will be remembered for his generosity, love of animals and his uncanny ability to tell a great story and deliver a joke, better than anyone! There will be no funeral service by request. Obituaries Laura Elizabeth Jones “Betty” 1929 - 2013

Betty Jones, 83, passed away peacefully on February 8th, 2013. Betty was born in Atlin, BC and it was storied her mother travelled 60 miles by dogsled from Teslin to give birth to her. Her formative years were spent in both Teslin and in Vancouver where she went to boarding school. She met her husband Art, while he was in Teslin working on the Teslin bridge. They married on April 1st, 1955 and returned to Cranbrook where she raised her family. Betty was a great lover of the outdoors and you could often see her on the trails behind their home in Gold Creek either hiking or cross country skiing. She also was a great traveler and she and Art traveled to many places around the world. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Betty is survived by her daughter Heather (Stuart) Tobe, sons Evan (Wendy), Ian (Sherra); grandchildren Justin (Jayme), Lewis, Chelsey, Georgia, Jessica, Hali, Mason; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Art, son Barry, and sister Joyce. A celebration of Betty’s life is being planned for in May. Peter Graham 1927 - 2013 It is with great sorrow that the family of Peter Graham announces his passing on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook at 85 years of age. Peter succumbed after an ongoing struggle with ill health in recent years. Peter was born on September 30, 1927 a native son of Cranbrook, and was extremely proud to be a life-long resident of the city. Peter received his early education here going on to graduate from UBC with a degree in law. He returned to Cranbrook where he enjoyed a busy and active law practice for 41 years. When he retired Graham and Company was the longest continuously operated law firm in Cranbrook. Peter had a tremendous love of music, particularly jazz and played clarinet in many bands over the years. The last band he played in was “The sounds of the 40’s”. He had a quick wit and was an irrepressible punster much to the amusement of friends and family. His love of animals was well known and he was a lifetime supporter of the SPCA. He loved his and Debby’s home on Moyie Lake. Peter is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Debby; his niece Laurie Edwards and her children Alyson and Lance; his nephew Tom (Claire) Prentice and their children Kaitlyn and Ian, plus many close and loving friends. Peter will be missed by all who knew him. He is predeceased by his sister Anne Prentice and his parents Allen and Ida Graham. A gathering of friends and family will take place in Peter’s honour in the summer of 2013. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. NDP threatens to test Liberal majority as budget debates near Dirk Meissner Canadian Press

VICTORIA — Premier Christy Clark is confident her Liberal government can survive a threat by the Opposition New Democrats to test what appears to an emaciated majority in the British Columbia legislature, but she’s not making any guarantees. Clark said she believes the five-seat Liberal majority will en-

dure, but warns that anything can happen in politics. “I think that support is there,’’ she said. “We’ll certainly see next week. I never ever in my public life have wanted to guess ahead and predict what any legislature might do. I don’t think that’s ever a good bet in politics, but I’m confident about it.’’ Officials with both the Liberals and New

Democrats admitted Thursday they were keeping a close eye on the numbers of politicians attending the legislature. The first test of the strength of the slim Liberal majority could come as early as Tuesday when the government tables its budget and it must pass first reading to proceed. But if the NDP musters more members to the

legislature and defeats the first reading, it won’t mean the government immediately falls and the legislature is dissolved. The Liberals still have the option of calling an official non-confidence vote for the next day, which offers them another opportunity to boost their numbers. A vote defeat for the Liberals could also see the Lieutenant Gover-

nor intervene and decide to keep the legislature in operation on the grounds that the province is close to the May 14 election. The current standings in the legislature are: 45 Liberals, 36 New Democrats and four Independents. But earlier this week, with Liberals Pat Pimm, Kevin Falcon and Rich Coleman away, the majority was down to two Liberals.

VICTORIA – Undoing the harmonized sales tax and establishing a modernized version of the 60-year-old provincial sales tax is the biggest task facing Premier Christy Clark’s government in the brief legislative sitting that precedes the May 14 provincial election. Finance Minister Mike de Jong introduced the transition legislation

Wednesday. It includes provisions for transactions that straddle the transition date such as new home purchases. The bill to replace the HST runs nearly 200 pages, and it will add accounting costs for business as well as taking away business input tax credits that match those available under the federal Goods and Services Tax. The government has given itself a deadline of April 1 to make

the switch for the 201314 fiscal year. The administrative burden of the switch starts with businesses reprogramming cash registers and other systems to go back to collecting two separate sales taxes. One of the few modern touches to the new PST is the ability of more than 100,000 businesses to register online at www.gov.bc. ca/etaxbc/register, and view online instructions

to help make the transition. About 30,000 B.C. businesses have started up since 2010, and operators may have no experience with the old sales tax system. Provincial sales taxes on restaurant meals, haircuts and other services will be removed as of April 1, but one companion tax is being kept in place. Private sales of vehicles, boats and aircraft are exempt from

GST, but the province levied a 12 per cent provincial tax on the transactions to equalize treatment of used vehicle sales between dealerships and individuals. The government vowed to reinstate the old PST at seven per cent after the HST was rejected in a province-wide initiative petition. The HST was imposed in 2010, extending the provincial sales tax to a range of services.

Clark said she called former Liberal MLA John Slater earlier this week and asked him to return to the Liberal caucus, but Slater is continuing the sit as an Independent. Slater was embroiled in a nasty split with the Liberals over his onagain, off-again candidacy in his Boundary-Similkameen riding. New Democrat House Leader John Horgan said his party is

waiting to test the majority next week — with the support of the Independents — when the Liberal government introduces the budget. Liberal caucus whip Eric Foster, who’s in charge of making sure the Liberals have a majority at all times, said the government numbers are a concern with some members on leave, but he’s confident the five-seat majority will hold.
