Surrey will soon be home to another high school, which will take the pressure off of overcrowded Clayton Heights Secondary. The province announced Friday it is committing $10.5 million toward a $16.7-million school in north Clayton. The Surrey School District is funding the remainder. The province has secured an 18-acre property at 73 Avenue and 184 Street for the school, which is expected to have the capacity for up to 1,200 students. It will help take some of the pressure off Clayton Heights Secondary (located at 7003 188 St.), which is currently 300 students over capacity. Karishma Ram, 15, was delighted with the news, even though she will have graduated by the time the new school is built. “I’ve been at Clayton Heights (Secondary) for 2½ years now, and have watched it grow,” Ram told an › see page 4

Provincial candidates line up for local ridings Alex Browne Staff Reporter

Forces are gathering on all sides of the political spectrum in all eight Surrey ridings, in preparation for B.C.’s impending 2013 provincial election. In Surrey-White Rock, incumbent BC Liberal MLA Gordon Hogg will face BC NDP candidate Susan Keeping, as well as challengers from two other provincial parties. BC Conservatives communications director Kristy Fredericks said the party has potential nominees for Surrey-White Rock, as well as Surrey-Panorama and Surrey-

Cloverdale, noting all three south-end ridings are currently being vetted by the BC Conservatives’ candidate review committee, and should be announced by mid-March. BC Green Party provincial campaign manager Jonathan Dickie said the party also plans to run a candidate in Surrey-White Rock and, if there is no nomination meeting by late March, will nominate one directly. Don Pitcairn ran for the party in the riding in 2009. BC Liberal media representative Sam Oliphant confirmed that the party is still seeking a candidate in the Surrey-Panorama

riding after previously nominated candidate Sukh Dhaliwal stepped down Feb. 8. Dhaliwal’s announcement followed news that he faces six charges under the Income Tax Act for failing to file returns for a company for which he is responsible. He is set to appear in court Feb. 21. The BC NDP already has its candidate for the riding, Amrik Mahil, in place, while the BC Green Party has nominated Sara Sharma. In the Surrey-Cloverdale riding, current Surrey-Panorama MLA Stephanie Cadieux (also the minister of children and fam-

ily development) has been nominated by the BC Liberals as a replacement for MLA Kevin Falcon, who last year announced his intention not to seek re-election. BC NDP Surrey-Cloverdale riding president Lloyd MacDonald said three potential candidates for that riding– Aditya Mohan, Vinay Sharma and Harry Kooner – will vie for members’ votes at a nomination meeting Feb. 23, 12:30-4:30 p.m. at Cloverdale’s Don Christian Elementary School (6256 184 St.). Both the BC Conservatives and the Green Party promised to announce candidates for the riding next month.

‘Complicated’ file: Crown Tracy Holmes Staff Reporter

A White Rock man arrested last month in connection with a cache of chemicals found in a Prospect Avenue apartment is expected to learn Thursday (Feb. 21) if he will be released from jail. Hamish Sutherland, 34 – who made two in-person appearances at Surrey Provincial Court last week (Feb. 7 and 14) – has been in custody since Jan. 24. That’s when police, acting on an anonymous tip about chemicals that may pose “a significant risk to public safety,” descended on a third-floor apartment in the 15100-block of Prospect Avenue. The response included officers with the Explosive Disposal and Chemical/Biological/ Radiological/Nuclear Response Unit, the Lower Mainland Integrated Forensic

A witness stated the victim was involved a melee with three others at the back of bus as it was heading northbound through Newton on King George Boulevard at about 1:30 p.m. on Sunday (Feb. 17). The bus stopped near the Real Canadian Superstore, but as police arrived, there were no suspects or victims on the scene. The victim was found

At the time of his arrest, Sutherland was on probation in connection with a 2009 incident in New Westminster, in which he was charged with possession of chemicals for dangerous purposes. Outside court following Sutherland’s Feb. 7 appearance, prosecutor Michelle Wray told Peace Arch News the White Rock file is “a bit complicated.” The police investigation is ongoing, she added. Const. Janelle Shoihet said it is unclear how long it will be before an analysis of the seized substances is complete. Until those results are back, “we can speculate, but we can’t say for certain” what the chemicals are, she said.

banning pay parking at the hospital. He said his appointments at the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre often run half an hour late, forcing him to shell out for two hours instead of one. “That’s eight bucks – it’s too much.” Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid told CTV last month it was difficult for health authorities to absorb parking costs and the current system was unlikely to change. The Canadian Medical Association Journal in 2011 argued pay parking amounts to an unfair user fee that can disrupt patient care. It said parking charges should at least be waived for patients, as they add avoidable

stress and may cause some to abruptly end a consultation to feed a meter and avoid fines. Dix said there are arguments for dropping the fees or altering the structure, but added rural B.C. residents “face more dramatic issues” because of the centralization of hospital services in more distant centres. Fraser Health spokesman Roy ThorpeDorward said about a third of the parking fee revenue collected goes to providing parking services – paving, lighting, security and management fees to a pay-parking firm like Impark. The remaining two-thirds goes into general health system funding. Thorpe-Dorward said there are no plans to change the system.

Teen dies aboard ‘party bus’ Kevin Diakiw Black Press

A teen is dead after spending some time on a “party bus” on Friday night. Police have ordered an autopsy into the death of the 16-year-old male, who died suddenly and quietly on the bus at about 10:30 p.m. About 50 kids boarded the bus at Burnsview Secondary School in Delta on Friday night at about 9:30 p.m. At the time, witnesses said the victim looked fine and was in good spirits, according to police. But as the bus approached 72 Avenue and 152 Street, the teen passed out and died. Police say there was no obvious cause of death, such as a puncture wound or other trauma. Officers conducted about 50 interviews with students that night, many of which had to be redone because of various levels of intoxication. Police expect the autopsy to tell them more about how the teen died. The investigation continues.

No plans to charge visitors to park at South Surrey location

Blackie Spit gets parking upgrade Tracy Holmes Staff Reporter

Visitors to Blackie Spit in South Surrey will have a “cleaner, neater” place to park this week, as work on paving the lot wraps up. Parks manager Owen Croy said the effort to spruce up the area includes painted lines denoting spaces and travel lanes, which will result in room for more vehicles and fewer minor accidents. There are no plans to implement pay parking. “This has not been proposed as a revenue opportunity to the finance committee of council nor has it been discussed in operational

meetings here at city hall in recent memory,” Croy said. Driving factors behind the work included complaints regarding dust generated in the gravel lot, the incidence of significant pot holes, poor traffic circulation and an aim to maximize the number of vehicles that can be parked. “It will handle summer visitors much better than happens right now,” Croy said. “People are less likely to get boxed in, people are less likely to have minor accidents in the area.” Access to the swim and sailing clubs will also

be improved by the work; as will underground utilities. Croy noted the area’s environmental sensitivity was factored into the equation. The parking surface is porous concrete – as opposed to asphalt – which will allow water to penetrate directly through, eliminating runoff and the need for intensive storm-water detention facilities. “There’s a whole bunch of good reasons for it,” he said. Surrey council in October approved a budget for the project of up to $700,000, awarded to Sustainable Concrete Canada Ltd.

Threat leads to new charge A White Rock man facing assault charges for a November incident is due back in court this week accused of threatening to kill the same man. Const. Janelle Shoihet said the latest charge stems from an incident late Dec. 31 that led to an arrest early Jan. 1, when a man under court-ordered conditions not to be in contact with a particular individual allegedly approached the 34-year-old and wanted to fight. It’s alleged “(the accused) approached the victim and said, come on let’s go for a walk and let’s fight,” Shoihet said. The first incident took place on Nov. 30. Both occurred in the 14900-block of Marine Drive. Jesse Duane Burns, 31, is scheduled to appear in Surrey Provincial Court on Feb. 20. - Tracy Holmes

School board chair Shawn Wilson said it’s great news that means a great deal to the residents of Surrey. Wilson later said there are other areas that will need high schools to address overcapacity, including in Grandview, which would take pressure off Earl Marriott Secondary, which is currently 600 students over its limit, and Lord Tweedsmuir, which is 500 students over capacity.

Input sought The Surrey Board of Education is seeking input from the public as to what programs and services should be priorities for the next school year. Like this year, needs in Surrey schools for 2013-’14 are expected to outpace funds the district receives from the provincial government, meaning budget deliberations will be more about sustaining services than adding new ones. tax and establishing a modernized version of the 60-year-old provincial sales tax is the biggest task facing Premier Christy Clark’s government in the brief legislative sitting that precedes the May 14 provincial election. Finance Minister Mike de Jong introduced the transition legislation Wednesday. It includes RESENTED provisionsBY for transactions that straddle the transition date such as new home purchases. The bill to replace the HST runs nearly 200 pages, and it will add accounting costs for business as well as taking away business input tax credits that match those available under the federal Goods and Services Tax. The government has given itself a deadline of April 1 to make the switch for the 2013-14 fiscal year. The administrative burden of the switch starts with businesses reprogramming cash registers and other systems to go back to collecting two separate sales taxes. One of the few modern touches to the new PST is the ability of more than 100,000 businesses to register online at www.gov.bc.ca/etaxbc/register, and view online instructions to help make the transition.

Pay attention to distracted driving

A

provincial crackdown on distracted driving by police this month is a welcome step. Police say statistics show that 30 per cent of traffic deaths are due to distracted drivers, with 37 per cent of serious injuries in crashes attributed to drivers not paying proper attention to the road. These are staggering numbers and beg the question — why has so much effort been put into tightening up drinking-and-driving laws, and so little towards distracted drivers? Drivers talking on cellphones or texting are the most commonly distracted, but there are many reasons that drivers become distracted. Eating while driving can be a big distraction, as can driving with pets in the front seat. Children can at times distract drivers as well. Police have been on the lookout for all kinds of distractions during February, and they likely haven’t had too much trouble spotting some. Despite a law that is now three years old, which prohibits people from talking on hand-held phones while driving, it remains a very common practice. Sit at a major intersection for five to 10 minutes and watch drivers. It won’t be hard to spot a number of them on hand-held phones. If people need to talk on their phones so badly while driving, they should be setting up a hands-free system in their vehicles. Yet many continue to ignore this option – and put their own lives, and those of others, at risk by their bad behaviour. Part of the reason this problem persists may be the minimal fines. While police have issued almost 106,000 violations since January 2010, the fine for using a hand-held phone while driving is just $167. Police say drivers can be charged with driving without due care and attention and be fined $368, but both of these fine amounts pale in comparison to the penalties handed down to drivers who blow over the limit under the new drinking-anddriving rules. It appears that lawmakers don’t take the issue of distracted driving too seriously. Perhaps it is because they haven’t found a way to tie the distracted driving laws so closely to victims. But there are no shortage of them, as the police figures show. Members of the public need to take the issue seriously and pull over when making a call. At the same time, lawmakers need to consider if stiffer penalties for driving while distracted are needed.

including Shell, Chevron, ExxonMobil and state players from China and Korea. All this is happening as shale gas is developed across the United States as well. As with oil, Canada is a captive of the U.S. market, and the flood of new gas supply has the North American price at rock bottom. At least B.C. hopes it’s the bottom. Gas royalties passed forest income to the B.C. treasury many years ago, and now as the forest industry struggles to recover, the province faces tumbling revenues from gas. Why would B.C.’s shale gas be seen as a priority for new global investment in LNG? For one thing, we’re a stable democratic country with a mature industry and competent regulation. Secondly, the shipping advantage of the Kitimat and Prince Rupert ports to the Pacific Rim has finally been recognized internationally, as coal, forest products, grain and container traffic has climbed in recent years. B.C. has another advantage that appears to be increasingly important. The shale gas deposits are deep, under a kilometre or more of solid rock, and most are in remote, sparsely inhabited locations. That adds cost to the pipeline system, but it has a benefit. At the beginning of the year, I predicted that the international protest movement that dishonestly targets Alberta oil would soon turn to demonizing natural gas. That pseudo-scientific attack has begun, right here in B.C. I’ll have more on that in a subsequent column. Split decision

City of Surrey deserves better

have its own set of challenges? We definitely made the right choice by not electing him when he ran for the BC Green Party. Patricia Seggie, Surrey

Editor: Following the media coverage since the rejection of the South Surrey casino complex, it appears the opponents are now shifting to the face-saving phase. The initial reported objections warrant some comments. I wonder how many of the opponents had reviewed with an open mind the City of Surrey’s Highway 99 corridor outline and the comprehensive submission of the proposed development – or was it just based on hype. Increase of gambling-related crime was one objection. The submission addressed the crime rate in various existing casino areas, indicating some slight or no increase. Fraser Downs area actually had a crime decrease. Infrastructure was expressed as a concern. The submission included existing and future traffic studies, which did not appear out of line, and also allocated funding. The Highway 99 corridor has been in a five-year developing phase, with much more to come. One would assume the infrastructure requirements had been addressed by the various city departments and appropriate recommendations had been provided. Environmental damage and loss of rural area was listed as another item. Again, it should have been considered by the departments. Why wasn’t it a problem with developments that started five years ago? Perhaps people with concerns should raze their structures and return the land to the rural area from where it was taken not so long ago. As for ‘chump change’ revenue, over a relative short time span of 10 years the benefit to the city could well be over $200 million – initial development costs, casino revenue, benefit of 500 permanent jobs, additional related developments, city business and property taxes, and goods and services related to daily operations of the complex. One would assume the city has no objections receiving this type of ‘chump change’ for the benefit of the general community. T. Furch, Surrey n I’m writing to thank Surrey Mayor Dianne Watts for her wisdom in rejecting the casino. ‘If you build it, they will come’ doesn’t necessarily apply in our economy today. Has anyone not noticed the number of established businesses that are closing doors? A lot of families are finding it a challenge to feed, clothe and keep shelter over their heads. People need to be heard and have positive input in their lives to stay productive and hopeful. Take a walk around this Surrey property and share in the pleasure of nature, birds, animals and maybe a pleasant conversation with the neighbors. If gambling is your thing, do it in gaming minister Rich Coleman’s neighborhood. There, you and your hard-earned money will be welcomed with open arms. B. Kilpatrick, White Rock

Editor: Re: Satiric slurs pay off for former candidate, Feb. 12. It’s Don Pitcairn – seller of “Better safe than Surrey” and “Surrey dies here” T-shirts – who is the bully here. I believe in Surrey and the tremendous effort that has been done to make it a truly livable and fun city to live in. As a citizen for almost 30 years, I have witnessed great improvements and am not ashamed of any part of the growing process. Who does Pitcairn think he is to try and besmirch the respect that we have achieved in the growing process? What large city doesn’t

Too many townhouses Editor: When will the City of Surrey stop approving all of these development proposals for townhomes? We have a serious problem when elementary schools, such as Cambridge Elementary in the Sullivan Heights area, are bursting at the seams, yet the city keeps approving new developments. Surrey is overcrowded and there is

no room to breathe in these oncebeautiful areas. It saddens me to see all the green space being cut down. Yes, there is a new elementary school being built in Sullivan Heights, but it is already full because of all the development. There is literally no room to park in the streets in some areas, not to mention there will not be much shade left in the summertime. Don’t even get me started on multiple-tenant basement suites and coach homes… how these get approved is beyond me! We don’t need townhome complexes on every street corner. It is time to lay down some boundaries and stop approving houses being built on top of houses, to keep our city beautiful. Nilum Sidhho, Surrey

Open containers travelling through White Rock concern letter-writers who are critical of the fallout from coal dust.

We just wait for the dust to settle Editor: Re: Cover-up necessary, Jan. 22 letters. Why don’t the U.S. coal trains have a permanent cover to limit coal-dust pollutants? Such a simple question; if only there was a simple answer. A chemical surfactant isn’t a full-proof cover, but it does help limit coal-dust dispersion to where each car will lose between 500 pounds to one ton of coal dust en route. This coal comes from a Powder River Basin mine – located in Wyoming and Montana – where the majority of the coal is in powder form. We then see these U.S. coal trains pass through White Rock, where they head for exportation to Asia. And then these empty coal trains go back to where they came from and start all over again. The amount of coal dust from loaded/unloaded coal trains, blowing and/or settling on land and water, is a health risk factor for humans and all creatures. Regardless of coal containment during rail transport, coal is a dirty fuel – period – and is most likely to find its way back to our environment either by near locality or by way of disposal sites. With the health-risk factors acknowledged, there is a safety factor that doesn’t get much talk, and that is how coal dust weakens the ballast of the rail lines and can be the cause of derailments. Now that gets the shippers and the carrier of coal arguing who will be financially responsible to contain the coal during transport. The coal shippers argue that BNSF needs to better maintain its rail lines to withstand an increase of coal

trains in weight and traffic, and BNSF argues that the coal is the cause of such degradation. Either way, we get lots of rain here and when humongous amounts of precipitation commingle with the coal dust in the ballast, it can weaken the road bed and cause the track to fail. Until the coal shippers and the carrier can agree who should be responsible to pay for the means to contain the coal, its dust will continue be a risk to railway safety. Notice I didn’t mention the health and environmental risks – for no containment will suffice in their protection. Stephanie Smith, White Rock n Re: We’re paying for pollution, Feb. 5 letters. Hurrah to letter-writer Cal Pawson. Right behind you in all your written thoughts. I say all residents of White Rock should get on board and stand up for our community. The noise and pollution of this volume of train traffic carrying coal through a settled community is not only outrageous but brings potential health problems caused by coal dust blowing from both the loaded and empty cars. I, for one, am angry about the noise level during the night which often awakens me with jangled nerves. Why isn’t the City of White Rock lending its voice to the opposition of coal-handling facilities in New Westminster, which will bring more pollution to the Lower Mainland with minimal economic benefits from American coal? Pair on ‘Top 10 Most Wanted’ list

Couple arrested on Valentine’s Day Kevin Diakiw Black Press

Surrey RCMP might have ruined Valentine’s Day plans for a couple who made their “Top 10 Most Wanted” list two weeks previously. Mounties arrested William Walsh Lisa Karon Shaw, 42, and her Chilliwack boyfriend, Ian Mountain, 27. She faces charges of breach of probation and driving while prohibited, and he is looking at charges of possession of stolen Robert Basil property, dangerous driving, and possession of break-in instruments. On Jan. 31, the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT) released its annual Top 10 Most Wanted list of suspected car thieves, and five of those named are from Surrey. Last week, police announced they had nabbed six of the Top 10. Mountain appeared in court on Valentine’s Day, and was due back Feb 18. Shaw was been released from custody and is to appear in court on Feb. 21. Police noted Shaw would be allowed to bring Mountain a card for Valentine’s Day, but chocolates or any other food items could be restricted. “Substances may be an issue,” said

RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet, adding “I think there’s a process in place for the exchange of greeting cards or letters. “It would be fitting – love knows no prison,” Paquet said. Of the four other Richard Mantler “Top 10” suspects arrested, two are from Surrey. Graham Arthur Hunter, 32, has been arrested on a warrant for breach of probation, while Travis Christopher McKay (wanted by Delta Police and Anthony Baird Surrey RCMP) has also been arrested for breach of probation. Others still wanted include: • William John Walsh, 31 (three warrants for breach of recognizance); • Richard James Mantler, 41 (wanted in Vancouver for possession of a stolen vehicle, flight from police, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and leaving the scene of an accident.); • Robert Fred Basil, 33 (wanted in Prince George for possession of a prohibited weapon); and, • Anthony Nicholas Baird, 19 (wanted in Coquitlam for breach of probation). Anyone with information about a remaining suspect, can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, or report online at www.solvecrime.ca

Cases of higher costs mostly due to human error, catchup bills

Smart meters accurate: Hydro Black Press

bills in some cases where a home used more power than it historically did. “We had a lot of customers last year where the bill was underestimated and then they got a catchup bill,” Verschoor said. Other customers may be on the equal-payments plan but if they add more appliances or otherwise start using more power, they, too, may face a large catchup bill later. The third scenario, she said, is simple human error by Hydro staff reading the smart meter manually and transposing digits or otherwise entering the wrong data. Hydro expects that problem will end once all smart-meter data is sent wirelessly rather than via human readers. Asked if sharply higher bills could be a result of an old meter reading too low and now being replaced with an accurate smart meter, Verschoor said even the old meters were tested regularly. “It’s not impossible but it’s fairly unlikely,” she said. “We were replacing about 40,000 meters a year because they weren’t meeting our requirements.” The provincial government has said it won’t force the remaining five per cent of B.C. homes without smart meters to accept them against their will for at least the next few months.

eading the newspaper together a few weeks back, best friends Kaitlyn Hlavacek and Rori Denness noticed an article that struck a chord. The Grade 6 students’ eyes perused the page sharing the story of children, the same age as themselves, who were ill and being turned away from Ronald McDonald House in Vancouver due to lack of space. And of the sick children who were fortunate enough to be staying at the house, there wasn’t enough room for all to ❝...Being with have their your familiy parents by makes you their sides. “When happier.❞ I saw that Kaitlyn Hlavacek article, I was just like, ‘Wow, people can’t be with their families. That would be really hard. I would be really sad if I was in that situation,” Kaitlyn, 12, said. After brainstorming, the two girls decided to combine an upcoming event for their softball team – both play for White Rock Renegades – and a school project for their Peace Arch Elementary health-and-career class into a fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House. “We had a responsibilities project, and you had to choose to either take care of yourself, take care of others or take care of a place. We chose to take care of others,” Rori, 11, explained, noting she has a cousin who stayed at Ronald McDonald House in Calgary. “When we presented this project in front of the class, I think it really opened up a lot of other peoples’ eyes. “It showed them that they can do something like that.” The event, which the girls named Great Escape for The Kids, will feature an evening of playtime Feb. 27 at Great Escapes in Langley. The $20 admission will include a choice of two activities – laser tag, air trek or 3D mini golf – a slice of pizza or hot dog and a

amount,” Kaitlyn added. The girls still have nearly 100 tickets to sell, and they plan to donate the money they raise to the expansion of Vancouver’s Ronald McDonald House, which is currently located on King Edward Avenue. So far, the organization has already found land even closer to BC Children’s Hospital and big enough to build a new 74,000-square-foot house, which will be able to serve the needs of up to 73 families at a time – significantly more than the 13 they are currently able to accommodate. BC Ministry of Health will match every dollar donated towards the expansion. “I think it would be better if they had a bigger house with more space, and they said they are planning lots of stuff involving the kids. It would be a lot more fun for them, and of course, being with your family makes you happier,” Kaitlyn said, noting the rooms would be similar to suites with a five-piece washroom. With help from their friends and family, the girls are hopeful they will sell all their tickets and plan to continue volunteering at Ronald McDonald House. “Our parents are very proud of us and have been supporting us a lot. They think it’s pretty cool what we’ve done,” Kaitlyn said, adding they recently dropped off a care package of baked goods at the house. “It just goes to show that anyone can make a difference.” For more information, or to purchase tickets, contact Rori at 604-535-8968 or sdenness@shaw. ca or Kaitlyn at 604-541-1696 or hlavacek@telus.net

Having been a professional dog walker in the past, I have walked many dogs in my day and some are really fun and relaxing to walk and others are quite a bit more frustrating on leash. Walking with your dog should be something enjoyable and stress reducing. Sadly, I see people give up on such a wonderful bonding exercise with their dog. If you find that your dog is very distracted walking on leash pulling you every which way, paying attention to everything around him except for you, getting some help from a trainer is nothing to be ashamed of. You are not the only one whose dog acts this way and you can have that relaxing experience with a little bit of help and some regular practise. The first thing you need to ask yourself is what do you want your dog to do? If your answer is, “I do not want Charley to pull me.” This is the wrong answer. You might say, “I want Charley to pay more attention to me on walks.” Or “I want Charley to walk with a loose leash.” Once you know what you want from your dog, you can work towards getting there. Focussing on the negative with your dog leaves you constantly correcting certain behaviours without explaining to your dog what you want. How is Charley supposed to understand what is expected when you do not communicate that to him/her? Ask people who have well behaved dogs what trainer they use or ask your veterinarian who they can recommend. Anyone in the pet care industry will have a referral. Once you have a name of a trainer, contact them and ask if you can sit in on a class or two and observe how they operate their classes. If you see positive training methods and you like the trainer, sign up and start the work. If you are not welcome to observe a class, look elsewhere. The best advice I can give anyone when training your dog is to keep a good sense of humour. If you get worked up and frustrated, your dog is likely to shut down and not respond to what you are trying to accomplish. Enjoy the time with your dog and you will want to practise more and you will reach your goal a lot faster. Call us for info on our training classes 604-541-8120 Happy training!

Hospital donation The Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation received a welcome parting gift from the Pacific Condominium Association of BC last month. Following the closure of the volunteer-driven association in 2009, members decided to gift the foundation with the account remains – totalling $5,400. The association shut down due to a lack of volunteer resources, said foundation communication officer Martha Davis. After the decision was made to shut down, the association had to tie up remaining loose ends before completing the donation. Davis also noted that the association had previously donated to the foundation.

Promoting Business & Tourism on the Semiahmoo Peninsula for 76 years The South Surrey White Rock Chamber of Commerce initiates programs and networking events, works closely with local government and forms committees dedicated to addressing issues of interest and concern that affect its members and the community. Through these important partnerships, the Chamber is able to accomplish more than an individual business or community member could on their own. The Chamber supports a variety of community organizations and events. Our participation ensures the promotion of the community and local business by hosting the Business Excellence Awards, Taste of the Peninsula, Golf Tournament, All Candidates Meetings and various business networking events.

The Chamber office and the Visitor Info Centre at #100 - 15261 Russell Ave. White Rock serves those who are visiting, moving or planning to do business in our community. We operate both a seasonal kiosk and a yearround Visitor Information Centre (VIC) with knowledgeable on-site BC Tourism Travel Counsellors promoting and directing tourists to the interesting sights, great lodgings and wonderful shopping the Peninsula has to offer.

White Rock Christian captures Southwest title with win over Tamanawis

Warriors head to Valleys as top seed Nick Greenizan Sports Reporter

The White Rock Christian Academy Warriors will head into this week’s Fraser Valley senior AAA boys basketball championships as the No. 1 seed, after a convincing run through the Valley’s southwest conference last week. The Warriors, the No. 2 southwest seed, captured the zone banner with a 68-50 win over the top-seeded Tamanawis Wildcats Friday night. Defence was key in the 18-point victory,

as the Warriors held their opponents to just 16 first-half points, while scoring 33 themselves. The second half was more even – Tamanawis got within 10 points in the third quarter, after a run of three-pointers – but it was as close as they’d get. “After that, we hit a few big threes ourselves, and got back up by 18 or so, and then we both just traded baskets the rest of the way,” WRCA coach Dale Shury said. Vartan Tanelian led the team with 28 points, and Tyus Allen and Sam Ykema had

16 and 13 points, respectively. Shury was especially impressed with the play of Ykema, who was credited with 10 rebounds and nine more deflections – would-be rebounds he instead tipped to teammates. “He was able to keep plays alive, either by getting the rebound himself or getting a hand on it and getting it to somebody else. We had a lot of second-chance points because of it,” the coach said. Prior to that contest, WRCA defeated North Delta 88-53 Thursday, and Elgin Park

77-57 in the first game of the tournament; the team’s average margin of victory in the tournament was 24 points. “After we came off that big roll in January (winning three straight tournaments), the guys haven’t really played inspired basketball,” Shury said. “So that’s what this week was about – getting back to that January form. And the guys started a little slow against Elgin, but were awesome against Delta and Tammy.” WRCA now prepares for the start of Fraser › see page 27

Eagles win one, lose one Nick Greenizan Sports Reporter

The Surrey Eagles continue to inch closer to securing first place in the BC Hockey League’s Coastal Conference, after earning a split of two games last weekend. On Friday, the first-place Birds – who now sit six points up on the Chilliwack Chiefs with six games to go – defeated the Nanaimo Clippers 3-2 on home ice. However, with a severely undermanned roster the following night in Chilliwack, Surrey fell to the Chiefs 4-2. The Eagles played the game with just 14 skaters, as a handful of regulars were shelved due to injury or illness – including Demico Hannoun, Colton Mackie, Tommy Stipancik, Troy Paterson and backup netminder Glenn Ferguson. And to make matters worse, blue-liner Ryan Fraser-Lee broke his skate in warmup and was unable to play. “That was tough because we were already going to play with five defencemen, so we ended up playing four, with a forward going back there every now and then,” explained Eagles coach Matt Erhart. “It wasn’t ideal, that’s for sure.” Roster issues aside, the Eagles still kept it close – they led 2-1 after one period and the game was tied 2-2 after 40 minutes until the Chiefs pulled away in the third, icing the game with an emptynetter at the 19:55 mark. “We just ran out of gas a little bit,” Erhart said. “Their fourth goal came right at the end, so it was a one-goal game for the most part. We had some chances to score with the goalie pulled, too, but just couldn’t get one. “But we were down players, and

the win between the pipes, stopping 23 shots. Looking towards the end of the season and playoffs, Erhart said the rash of injuries – most of which, he says, are minor – has actually been a blessing in disguise, in one respect: it’s allowed the coaching staff to

find successful line combinations they otherwise wouldn’t have put together. “We’ve had to throw guys together who normally wouldn’t play together, and some of it has worked,” the coach said, pointing to his new shutdown line of Nic Pierog, Kevan Killistoff and Cameron. “Those guys hadn’t played together all season, but they’ve been very good. We’ve been able to throw them out against other teams’ top lines, and they’ve done a real good job,” Erhart said. As well, the team has buckled down defensively, usually keeping the opposition to under 25 shots per game. “We’ve been really good since probably Christmas, as far as defence goes,” he said. “We’re

keeping the shots down, and keeping (the opposition) to usually two goals or less. So all we have to ask of our guys is to go out there and score one goal a period, and usually that’s been enough.” This weekend, the team embarks on its final road trip of the season, a three-games-in-three-nights journey through the Island Division. On Friday, Surrey will play the Powell River Kings, followed by a Saturday tilt with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs and a Sunday afternoon game against Cowichan Valley. “It’ll be a good test for us,” Erhart said. “If we can get a couple wins, it’ll put us that much closer to clinching (first place), and that’s what we’re aiming for.”

Pacific Sea Wolves on the podium in Fleetwood

Swimmers make AAA grade A pair of Pacific Sea Wolves Swim Club members are newly ‘AAA’ qualified, after impressive performances at B.C. AA Championships last week in Surrey. Both Annabelle Epp and Karl Rumm qualified for the next AAA event, after Epp finished on the podium in the 100-m breaststroke and Rumm placed first in the 50-m freestyle and 100-m backstroke. Epp and Rumm were two of a

dozen Pacific Sea Wolves taking part in the AA event at the Surrey Sports and Leisure Centre in Fleetwood, Feb. 9-10. Others who took part included Justine Albert, Ainsley Greffard, who swam personal best times in all events; Alex Grieve, who was fifth in the 200-m butterfly; Momi Miljenovic, third in the 400-m individual medley; Ingrid Rumm, who shaved 7.7 seconds off her time in the 200-m free;

Nick Shang, who placed on the podium in the 100- and 200-m backstroke events; Michael Shenouda, who won silver in the 100-m free; Anna Shocohian, who dropped 11 seconds from her time in the 400-m free; Nicole Ure, who had personal bests in both the 100-m backstroke and 100-m free; and Chelsea Zhou, who claimed silver in the 100-m fly. - Nick Greenizan

Elgin, Semi, Tweedsmuir advance › from page 25 Valley championships tomorrow (Wednesday), when they host 32nd seed Clayton Heights at 8 p.m. And despite playing the bottom-ranked team, Shury insists his team isn’t taking the contest lightly. “You can’t do that, no matter what, at this time of year. Wednesday is an elimination game, so we have to stay focused if we want to move on,” he said. The top eight Fraser Valley teams move on to provincials, which means WRCA will have

to win twice at Valleys in order to advance. They aren’t the only Peninsula squad in the mix, either. Elgin Park is the No. 20 seed at Fraser Valleys, and faces off against No. 13 Heritage Woods Wednesday at Tamanawis, while 26th-seeded Semiahmoo will face off against No. 7 Lord Tweedsmuir. Tamanawis, the No. 4 squad, will play 29th-ranked L.A. Matheson. The second round of Valleys is set for Friday – WRCA and Tamanawis will again host games – with the third round

set for Monday evening. The playoff rounds behind Feb. 28 at Fleetwood Park and the Langley Events Centre. Earl Marriott is the lone South Surrey school not to advance past the southwest zone, having lost their opening zone game earlier this month. “We had a tumultuous season in terms of wins and losses and injuries, but we fought and never quit,” EMS coach Christopher Finlay said in an email. “I couldn’t be more proud of our small group of kids. They battled as hard as they could.”

NICHOLAS CARL RYHORCHUK

OCTOBER 4-1928 - FEBRUARY 2-2013 It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my Father; my best friend, teacher, and problem solver. He was the kindest, thoughtful and giving man that I have ever known, and he could always be counted on. He was very proud of his Ukrainian heritage. Dad is survived by his daughter, Laurie; husband, Tim Farrell and granddaughter, Jean, who was the apple of his eye and his brother, Maron (Marylyn, Teri, Debbie and families.) Dad is predeceased by his loving wife of 42 years, Jean (Finlayson); sister in law Mona Finlayson, his son, Douglas Kevin (Betty); his brothers, John (Linda, Sharon, Daphne, Garry and Kevin) and Eddie. Dad’s parents, William and Mary (Kolcheski) who came from their native land Nova Sylka, Ternopil, Oblast Ukraine, Dad worked from a very early age for the C.N.R, from very small towns in Saskatchewan, Reynaud, Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Peace River Alta, Edmonton Alta and then off to Northern BCPrince George, where he was promoted to Regional Rules Instructor. He travelled as far as Gimli, Manitoba to teach and examine employees. We were so proud of him and how hard and long he worked... and never backed down. He taught us kids, and some who had met him along the way, the importance of sticking to something you believe in… and that always...always...family comes first. Dad suffered a lot throughout the years since my Mother was diagnosed with Cancer, and he saw us all through this. His only son, Douglas, fought for many years with his illness, but left us in 2008, and after that Dad started to really slow down, until at a time, 4-5 years ago that he could not live by himself. I was so very blessed to have had that time to share so many memories, as I moved in with him as a 24/7 caregiver. We were so fortunate to have our cousin, Bishop Ken Nowakowski in our lives, and even though he travelled the world we were always able to get a hold of him for Dad and he always came. We were so lucky that when dad’s time was near that Father Ken came to Dad’s and our sides...to give a blessing. Dad was a member of the Masonic Lodge and also of the ELKs of Canada. He and Mom both gave their "all" to these causes, such as, Hearing Impaired Children, and numerous fundraisers. I would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Pretty, Dr. Joshi and Dr. O'Brien for many years of caring for my Dad, and to the Emergency Dr’s. and ICU staff... and for the nurses and staff at Dr. Hogg Pavilion 3, White Rock. A huge thank you for the caring of Dad, for exceptional care and for allowing me to spend the nights I did to be by his side. RIP Tato, I know you are in a better place, and you are not gone, you are "Just on the other side of that door" I love you Dad.... A Celebration of Dad’s life will be held at White Rock Elks Lodge 431, 1469 George Street White Rock on Tuesday March 19th 2013 from 1-4 pm. Condolences may be offered at www.victoryfuneralcentre.ca Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre 604-536-6522

Tom passed away peacefully in his sleep on February 14 at the age of 89 years, just 3 days short of his 90th birthday. Predeceased by his wife Lilian in 1994. Survived by his three sons, Ricky, Terry (Jeannie), Tim (Sandy); grandchildren David, Cara, Jennifer and Suzanne; and great-grandchildren Madison and Dane. Tom was from a prairie farming family, a Veteran in WWII and worked for 7up and in the bottling industry for many years. He loved woodworking and passing along his passion to his sons, he also loved his pets and the outdoors. He will be fondly remembered by his family. Thank you to the caring staff at Rosemary Heights and Concord Pacific. A private service will be held. Donations may be made in Tom’s name to the Salvation Army, a charity Tom was very fond of as a proud Canadian Veteran. MACISAAC, Maureen (nee HARE) Jan. 22, 1935 - Jan. 31, 2013 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Maureen, in White Rock, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Mo will be lovingly remembered by her husband Laurie, her daughter, Sarah and her family Brandon and Ceilidh. Mo is survived by her family in England, sister Joan (Keith) and her nephew David (Janice) and niece Jane (Pim). She will be greatly missed by her forever friend, Audrey Nutter, whose shared adventures date back to the 1950’s when they were both new arrivals from the UK in Toronto. Mo was born in London and immigrated to Canada in 1956 where she married Laurie in 1965 in Toronto. Laurie’s employment took the family abroad to London and later to Washington DC, where her elegance charm and grace on the social circuit became her husband’s greatest asset. They retired to White Rock British Columbia in 1988. Mo leaves behind many great friends from around the world and here at home. A gathering to celebrate Mo and her life will take place at Hazelmere Country Club, Surrey, BC, on February 21, 2013 at Noon. We would welcome and encourage you to bring a memory!! “She will not be forgotten Because She is so easy to remember.” In lieu of flowers a donation to the White Rock South Surrey Hospice Society made in Mo’s name would be a great tribute.

MORRISON, Norm Norm passed away in Peace Arch Hospital on Saturday, February 2, 2013. Both his father and mother predeceased him, Gordon and Minnie Morrison. He is survived by his sister and brother, Madeleine and Ronald and four loving children, daughters Christine, Melanie and Natalie (Justin) and son Norm. Norm was born May 9, 1949 in Winnipeg then spent most of his adult life here on the West Coast. Norm worked for the Fraser Health Authority as an IT Specialist until his retirement at the end of November, 2012. Norm loved painting, reading, entertaining, gardening and spent many happy evenings playing drums under the two tall trees of East Beach on Semiahmoo reserve. In August of last year Norm was extremely proud and honoured to give his daughter Natalie away to her betrothed Justin at the very top of Grouse Mountain. A Special Ceremony in Norm’s honour was held Saturday, February 16th 1:00-3:00pm at the Sandpiper Pub, 15595 Marine Dr, White Rock. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation. Norm was and is loved by his family, pets and many friends in the White Rock community. He will be terribly missed by all.
