Aldergrove Remembers Coleton Nelson

Candles shine for youngster By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

HARRY HUNT PHOTO Coleton Nelson’s family, parents Wayne and Brenda and siblings Chrystie and Alecsa, were joined by many friends at Monday’s memorial to the late Aldergrove youth (inset photo at top).

A large throng of supporters turned out at Aldergrove Arena Monday evening with candles and balloons to help the Nelson family remember 12-year-old Coleton, who was killed in a vehicle collision two years ago. The Nelson family, parents Brenda and Wayne, and sisters Chrystie and Alecsa, lost their son and brother, Coleton, on Feb. 18, 2011, in a crash at Robertson Crescent and 256 Street. Coleton was a passenger in the car, which was broadsided by a garbage truck, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Coleton was a popular local student and player #10 for his Aldergrove Minor Hockey team. The community has kept his memory alive with memorial services at the Aldergrove Arena on the anniversary of his death, as well as through a legacy, the Coleton Nelson #10 Trust Fund that helps provide financial assistance to other young hockey players who love the game just as he did. The Coleton Nelson Memorial Hockey Game has been held every spring at Aldergrove Arena, featuring local peewee and bantam teams, all of whom had played with Coleton over the years. On Monday evening the assembled crowd held candles and watched a video of his life on a screen set up in the arena parking lot. Then the crowd released balloons into the sky together. The intersection at which Coleton was killed has been fitted with a flashing warning light to alert drivers of the stop signs. However, these traffic lights have not been activated yet.

Langley Township backs first ever housing action plan By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star

The Township of Langley needs to build much more rental and affordable housing, according to the first ever housing action plan developed for the community. The plan, nearly five years in the making, was approved by council on Monday, Feb. 4, following a presentation by consultant Linda Allen, who warned the fast-growing Township

needs to make sure that lowerincome people, seniors, students and people with disabilities are not excluded. “We’ve heard over and over again that there really aren’t enough rental options in the community,” Allen said. “Unquestionably, there will be increasing demand for rental accommodation.” Projections show the Township population will almost double by

2041, and the number of people 65 and over will more than double during the same period, Allen said. The study estimates 50,000 more dwellings will need to be built to accommodate that growth. The study found there is a lack of affordable home options for people with special needs, defined as “youth at risk of becoming homeless, low fixed income seniors and mental health clients.”

Less than one per cent of Township housing is subsidized seniors’ or family housing, compared with nine per cent in the City of Langley and five per cent in Coquitlam. On the plus side, the plan notes the Township has developed a good mix of market-rate housing and the average price of a Township house is roughly 30 per cent lower than Vancouver, according to the report.

Despite that, many Langley residents find it challenging to obtain housing within their budget, the report to council states. It uses the example of a medium-income couple who was making an average of $92,000 a year in 2010 and who, if they had few debts and a “solid down payment” would qualify for a maximum mortgage of $434,000.

Historic Aberdeen Elementary gets seismic upgrade Aldergrove Star

A $1.8-million project agreement has been signed to support a seismic upgrade for Aberdeen Elementary school in West Abbotsford. This project is part of the province’s continuing commitment to student safety through the Seismic

Mitigation Program. Aberdeen Elementary has a capacity of 295 students. Current enrolment is 170 Kindergarten to Grade 7 students from both rural and suburban areas. That number is expected to increase to 194 by 2016-17. Two of the six blocks that make

up the school will be upgraded, with renovation requiring temporary relocation of students to portable classrooms or to other classrooms within the school. Seismic upgrading work is expected to begin this summer with the affected blocks ready for occupancy in January 2014.

A retiree who promised to “get tough on crime and light on taxes” was selected to contest the upcoming provincial election for the BC Conservatives in Fort Langley-Aldergrove. Rick Manuel surprised supporters of Nazreen Burns in taking the victory at the constituency’s nomination meeting Wednesday evening (Feb. 13) at the Super 8 Motel in Gloucester Industrial Estates. There were about 30 of the constituency’s 66 members who turned up to vote that night. Burns is a long-time Aldergrove resident who is actively involved in the federal Conservative party and widely respected for her contributions to the Aldergrove community and high school. Manuel, who ran as an independent candidate for councillor in the 2011 Langley Township elections, is a retired civil servant living in the Salmon River Uplands area. Both candidates expressed similar mes-

mum percentage of affordable rental units. Mobile home parks are a unique Langley issue according to Allen, who said the Township has 35 to 40 per cent of all manufactured homes in the region. Among other things, the housing action plan proposes creation of an affordable housing reserve fund, new standards for secondary suites and carrying out an inventory of the current rental housing stock The report drew a cautious endorsement from the Vancouverbased Pacific branch of the Urban Development Institute (UDI), the national non-profit association that represents developers, property managers, financial lenders, lawyers, engineers, planners, architects, appraisers, and real estate professionals, as well as various government agencies.

In a letter to Paul Crawford, the manager of the Township’s longrange planning department, UDI president and CEO Anne McMullin said using density bonusing (where a developer is allowed to construct bigger than normal buildings if they include more affordable housing) has met with “mixed results” in other communities. McMullin also expressed concern about using a “community amenity policy “ that would see charges levied on new housing projects to help pay for affordable housing. That could slow development, McMullin wrote, adding the UDI “would like to see that the additional financial burden of a societal problem (housing affordability) is not placed entirely onto new home buyers, especially when the affordable hous-

ing units are to the advantage of the entire community.” McMullin also expressed doubt about a proposal to promote secondary suites in new single family homes, saying the results have been “varied” in other communities that went that route. The plan was amended after the letter arrived to include a promise that stakeholder groups like the UDI will be consulted before any changes to existing regulations are made. Council voted unanimously to adopt the recommendations of the plan. The next steps will include an overhaul of Township bylaws to include a definition of affordable housing, reviewing existing community and neighbourhood plans and setting up a system to track housing trends and prices.

ing a life sentence for killing two sex trade workers in the spring and summer of 2007. DNA found on his shoe and in his car linked him to those murders, which took place in Langley City and Abbotsford. Redford’s family made several pleas for the killer to come forward after her case went cold. It was after Butorac was arrested for the sex trade workers’ murders that he was first linked to Redford’s death. Redford’s body was found floating in the Bertrand Creek, which is blocks from where Butorac lived with his father. In Butorac’s trial for the two murders he is convicted of, it provided no insight into motivation behind those killings. He wasn’t on police radar before his arrest. Redford’s leaves behind a young son and daughter, grandchild and her own parents. Redford’s father had vowed to attend every day of the trial on behalf of his family.

47th Variety Telethon raises $7,124,264 Aldergrove Star

After 47 years of entertaining audiences in BC, the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon proved again that this television must-see event is as popular today as it was in 1966. This year the Telethon raised $7,124,264 thanks to the generosity of British

Columbians in communities across the province. All proceeds help children who have special needs. “Our donors are our champions,” says Dave McConachie, President of Variety. “Without their incredible support, many children, and organizations such as hospitals and child

development centres, would have to go without. We are a last resort for many families when they apply for a grant, and through the funding we receive from our generous donors we are able to help these parents breathe easier and focus on their child’s needs.”

BC Press Council

The Aldergrove Star is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, 201 Selby St., Nanaimo, B.C. V9R 2R2.

VICTORIA – Whether Christy Clark’s government survives the May election or not, the natural gas “Prosperity Fund” idea floated in last week’s throne speech is a useful one. B.C. is poised to join Alberta in the upper rank of energy producing jurisdictions, with an expanding network of natural gas collection, refining and processing into liquid (LNG) for export. Clark’s pre-election throne speech proposed a resource fund similar to Alberta’s Heritage Fund that would be reserved for debt reduction and major projects, rather than spent on programs, which tends to happen under the political pressure of four-year election cycles. Opposition politicians and media commentators have dismissed this as a pre-election stunt. They note that the LNG industry in B.C. doesn’t exist yet, and may never produce the hundreds of billions of dollars projected over the next 30 years. I returned for a visit to B.C.’s northeast earlier this month, and I can tell you the gas boom is real. My parents homesteaded east of Dawson Creek near the Alberta border in 1962, and I recall when our farm was drilled for gas by Gulf Canada 40 years ago. Many more gas wells have been drilled since then, and country roads have been widened and numbered for industrial traffic. Hydraulic fracturing, already in

use when our farm was drilled, has been combined with directional drilling to open up huge new supplies. A farming community called Montney is the latest hot play, yielding not only shale gas but petroleum liquids, which are valuable for diluting heavy oil among other things. B.C. has never seen this kind of international investment interest before. Initial projects have been joined by global players such as British Gas, and Mitsubishi, a key player in Japan’s replacement of its devastated nuclear power program. Spectra Energy, which operates one of North America’s biggest gas processing plants at Fort Nelson and has another one under construction nearby, has begun work on a third plant near Dawson Creek. Spectra and British Gas have also proposed the latest of several pipelines, to move all this gas to an LNG terminal at Prince Rupert. The Kitimat-Prince Rupert region now has at least five proposed terminals, with investors including Shell, Chevron, ExxonMobil and state players from China and Korea. All this is happening as shale gas is developed across the United States as well. As with oil, Canada is a captive of the U.S. market, and the flood of new gas supply has the North American price at rock bottom.

At least B.C. hopes it’s the bottom. Gas royalties passed forest income to the B.C. treasury many years ago, and now as the forest industry struggles to recover, the province faces tumbling revenues from gas. Why would B.C.’s shale gas be seen as a priority for new global investment in LNG? For one thing, we’re a stable democratic country with a mature industry and competent regulation. Secondly, the shipping advantage of the Kitimat and Prince Rupert ports to the Pacific Rim has finally been recognized internationally, as coal, forest products, grain and container traffic has climbed in recent years. B.C. has another advantage that appears to be increasingly important. The shale gas deposits are deep, under a kilometre or more of solid rock, and most are in remote, sparsely inhabited locations. That adds cost to the pipeline system, but it has a benefit. At the beginning of the year I predicted that the international protest movement that dishonestly targets Alberta oil would soon turn to demonizing natural gas. That pseudo-scientific attack has begun, right here in B.C. I’ll have more on that in a subsequent column. Editor: Re: “Short course pool for Aldergrove.” Is that short shrift for Aldergrove? I was under the mistaken impression that the project was all about a pool, not a hockey arena. And what is a heritage library? We already have a hockey arena and a library. Now that I think of it, we already have a small swimming pool at Philip Jackman Park. J. Churchman, Aldergrove ****** Editor: Re: letter, Aldergrove shortchanged in swimming pool plan I totally agree with Diane Kask’s comments about a 25 metre pool being inadequate. It would restrict the amount of lanes being available for lap swimming. You need space for leisure swim and play, and a 50 metre pool allows you to split serious swimming and play perfectly, as demonstrated at the Walnut Grove pool. Forego the idea of a totally new arena and upgrade it as suggested by Diane. I get riled when I hear councilor Bob Long saying there isn’t enough space or money; we don’t need a new arena! To our council, please do the right thing and address the needs of most of our community. Daniel Dupuis, Aldergrove ****** Editor: For several years the taxpayers from Aldergrove have asked for a covered swimming pool, like the one in Murrayville. We got to pay for the arena, without being consulted before it was built. Now we will pay for an addition to the arena {for gymnasts?} without being consulted. The community centre that the Aldergrove Star lauded last week is to be our swimming pool. A small pool with a pool terrace {who will use that?} and a lap pool for the children, and there are many children here who can use that. A regulation rink taking up a large area that will only be used by young boys and men and some girls in figure skating. A regulation sized pool with facilities could be used by males and females of all ages. What a waste of our tax money and community resources, and a slap in the face to Aldergrove. I. Lehmann, Aldergrove (Editor’s note: The Aldergrove Arena was built 40 years ago by a private developer, Jack Loeppky, on private property owned by Loeppky. It was later, after it was built and operating, that it was sold to the Township of Langley.)

What happened to trolley? Editor: Speaking as president of Pioneer Park and having been told that our members would have access to the trolley service coming to our area, we sure have been kept in the dark since then. Is there any update on this? Is it actually still alive or what has happened? Some information for our members would be greatly appreciated. Fred Dalkeith, Aldergrove (Editor’s note: The Star has been told that two parties involved in the Aldergrove trolley plans are currently litigating each other. The Star will inform readers when more information is available.)

Variety acts entertain ‘vaudeville style’ Aldergrove Star

Entertainment from an era when actors enthralled live audiences with dance, music, magic, slapstick comedy, and other audacious acts is making an appearance in Langley. A group of Vaudevillians will take the stage at the Fort Langley Community Hall on Saturday, Feb. 23, 8 p.m., when Langley Centennial Museum presents “A Vaudeville Variety Show.” The event is being held in conjunction with the Museum’s exhibition “Voices of the Town – History of Vaudeville in Canada.” On loan from the Peterborough Museum and Archives, the display features images from the Basille Collection of Roy Studio photographs. “We are lucky in Langley to be entertained by all kinds of talented artists and performers, but the wide range of acts taking the stage at the Community Hall will make this a truly unique experience,” said Township of Langley cultural services manager Peter Tulumello. “If you are looking for fun, authentic, old-style entertainment, this is a night not to miss.” A Vaudeville Variety Show is being produced by local resident Professor Douglas Fraser. A musicologist and entertainer with a background in vaudevillian music and performances, Fraser is an impresario of musical comedy and variety-style presentations. Not only has he produced many shows, Fraser is a speaker, singer, comedian, and banjo and tenor guitar player who has toured with Bryan Adams, Boz Scaggs, the Knack, George Carlin, and Blood, Sweat and Tears. Earlier in life he opened for greats such as Buddy Rich, Earl Hines, Les Brown and his band of Renown, Stan Getz, and Eubie Blake. Fraser will be the MC for the evening and will also perform as a solo act and with the Genuine

Underdog Flames take first playoff game, 4-3 By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

The Ridge Meadows Flames haven’t been able to beat the Aldergrove Kodiaks in all of their junior B hockey regular season games, but on Monday night the underdogs redeemed themselves by taking the first game of the first round of playoffs into double overtime and eking out a 4-3 win. Flames keeper Wesley McLeod was the star of the night in stopping all but three of Aldergrove’s 63 shots on net, while Kodiaks keeper Mark Menicucci turned aside all but four of the Flames’ 31 shots. The game was scoreless throughout the first two periods, and Kodiak Spencer McHaffie finally got on the score sheet on a power play at 1:44 of the third. The Flames evened it up at 9:59, and Kodiak Scott McHaffie got another power play at 11:12 to put the Kodiaks ahead 2-1. However, the Flames scored twice more at 13:42 and 15:51 on a power play to go up 3-2. It was a last minute score by Scott McHaffie that evened it up and took the game into overtime. The Flames scored the winner on a power play in the second overtime for the 4-3 victory. Game two was after press deadline, on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Aldergrove Arena.

KODIAKS AFFILIATES SHINE Considering that the Aldergrove Kodiaks had nine affiliate players on the ice against rival Abbotsford Pilots the team put up a great fight Wednesday, Feb. 13 at Aldergrove Arena. The game result wasn’t important as the Kodiaks are destined to play the first round of playoffs against the Ridge Meadows Flames, starting Monday, Feb. 18 at Aldergrove Arena. Kodiaks GM Rick Harkins said that after last year’s experience of having several key players placed on the injured list just as the playoffs started he wasn’t willing to risk the same outcome as this year’s regular season wound down. Harkins was pleasantly surprised with the performance of the affiliate players, however, as the Kodiaks held the Pilots back for the first two periods and were even up 2-1 midway through the second period. The Pilots were up 1-0 at the start of the second period, but the Kodiaks scored twice in the second. The first Kodiaks goal was at 7:10 by CJ Lillies, assisted by affiliate Philip Gauthier and Ryan Simpson. This was followed by a power play goal from Gauthier at 10:33, assisted by Roshen Jaswal and Tyson Solotki. Gauthier earned a well-deserved second star of the game.

The inexperience of the affiliates caught up the team in the second half as they made the mistake of not keeping their eyes on the coaching bench and were caught twice for having too many men on the ice. The Pilots scored on both of these power plays, with the first one in the dying minute of the second period helping the Pilots even the score at 2-2. The Pilots scored four more in the third, including two on power plays, to end the night in a 6-2 win. The Kodiaks ended their regular season Feb. 16 with a 12-0 win over Port Moody Panthers, whowere already eliminated from playoffs. PLAYOFFS UNDERWAY The Pacific Junior Hockey League has set the dates for the first round of playoff games between the Aldergrove Kodiaks and Ridge Meadows Flames. The Aldergrove Kodiaks playoff games schedule began Feb. 18 and 20 at Aldergrove Arena. The following are the dates and locations of the rest of the series: Fri., Feb. 22, 7:30 p.m. Aldergrove Kodiaks at Ridge Meadows Flames, Planet Ice. Sat., Feb. 23, 7:45 p.m. Aldergrove Kodiaks at Ridge Meadows Flames, Planet Ice. Wed., Feb. 27, 7:15 p.m. Ridge Meadows Flames at Aldergrove

An Aldergrove woman will be among the competitors when British Columbia’s National Stream Synchronized Swimming teams compete in Surrey, Feb. 23-24 for the B.C. Provincial Championships. Hosted by Surrey’s BC Aquasonics at the Surrey Sport & Leisure Complex, this meet is the final opportunity to compete in British Columbia before these teams head to the National Qualifier in Calgary, March 19-24. Senior National Team member Amy Whitton of Aldergrove will compete in the Combo on the morning of Feb 24 as well as the Team Routine that afternoon. Her coach is Susan Kemper of Langley. In addition, 13-15 National Team members Lindsey Solmes of Langley and Alanna Stobbe of Abbotsford will compete in the Team Routine on Feb 24. Their coach is Tanya Magee of Langley. Athletes at his event are National Stream synchronized swimmers in the 13-5 age group, Juniors (16-18 years) and Seniors (18+). Provincial level athletes will also be competing in a training meet at the same time. BC Aquasonics National Stream athletes and coaches represent communities across the Fraser Valley. It is British Columbia’s oldest, largest, and most successful synchronized swimming club. The Aquasonics have produced all but one Team Canada athlete from the province of B.C., all of the Olympic team synchronized swimmers from B.C., and two Olympic Team coaches. The club currently has its largest membership in over a decade with over 100 athletes, ages six to 20, in introductory, recreational and competitive streams.
