One of those actually placed 11th; the 10th spot initially went to Kelly Mehrer, who will be unable to attend the final competition. “I was sorry that Kelly couldn’t continue,” said producer Vern Gorham. “But for one singer, it provided a great opportunity to show off their talent in the finals.” Despite offering strong competition, Brad Sutherland, Laryssa Pugh, Jenna Leduc, Cara Waddle, Will Ralston, Monica Blackmore, Frances Collison, Morgan Benty and Tyler Leduc were not selected to move on. “They offered some strong competition,” said Gorham. “I don’t envy the audience having to make these choices.”

From page 1 “It’s difficult to assess the impact that his loss will have on our community," Creston Mayor Ron Toyota said on Friday. “As the son of parents who were among our earliest settlers, Ken lived a remarkable life, one that touched hundreds — probably thousands — of people in countless ways. “I first got to know Ken when I started flying in 1966. For two summers, I worked as a pilot, spotting forest fires for J.H. Huscroft Ltd. For the last 12 years of his life we were fellow Rotarians — his 45 years of perfect attendance is just one indication of what a determined man he was when he made a commitment. Ken’s Rotary example has served as my inspiration to keep a perfect attendance record for my 11 years in the Creston Valley Rotary Club. “We use the word legacy too lightly at times, but Ken's legacy as a community builder, employer, family man and friend to so many is unparalleled.” Following are excerpts from the biography presented at Huscroft’s funeral by one of his sons, Kevin. “Kenneth grew up in Huscroft, together with his many siblings and cousins that lived nearby, playing with farm animals, roaming in the woods, and swimming or skating and playing hockey at the local pond. From his father and older brothers, he learned to love fishing and hunting and working in the family businesses of farming, logging and sawmilling. “Kenneth also learned the pain of loss early in his life. His older brother, Warren, was kicked by a horse while walking home from school and died in 1938. Then in 1942, his older brother, Burt, was killed in a logging accident while working in the family business. “When [the Second World War] came, Kenneth volunteered but was initially too young to serve. He returned to school

to complete high school math so that he could enlist in the Air Force to become a pilot, which he did in 1943. It was when he returned to school that Kenneth met his first wife, Kate Riddell. Kenneth and Kate were married in Lethbridge, Alta., in 1944. Kenneth earned his wings in Gimli, Man., where he finished first in his class, and was promoted to flying officer in 1944. He had also trained to land in cross winds at Fort Macleod, Alberta, thus coming to know much of the prairies. As the war in Europe was coming to an end, Kenneth was not sent overseas, and he was then discharged in 1945. Kenneth returned to the Creston Valley to work in the family logging and sawmilling business, J.H. Huscroft Ltd., often living in logging camps in the mountains for extended periods, sometimes with his young family. “Through the late ’40s and the ’50s, Kenneth and Kate had seven children: John, Warren, Gwen, Ruth, Kevin, Barry and Jeannie. Kenneth’s life changed dramatically in 1953 when his beloved oldest brother Elmer died in a sawmilling accident. With Elmer gone, the management of the family businesses fell to Kenneth, Leonard and Mickey, and from that day forward their mother forbade them to ever travel together in the same vehicle, out of fear of losing all of her sons in another accident. Kenneth’s father, John, died in 1964. … “Kenneth and Kate divorced, and then he married Gloria Woodford in 1974 in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. With Gloria, he travelled to many parts of the world, seeing many places in Europe, north and south America, and many Pacific Islands. Gloria also worked with Kenneth at the sawmill for many years. Kenneth and Gloria adopted two children, Roselle and Derek, in 1978. There was a rare overflowing gallery at the Feb. 12 regular Creston town council meeting as firefighters and friends and families of Mayor Ron Toyota and Regional District of Central Kootenay chair John Kettle gathered to witness medal presentations. Hans Cunningham, former chair of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, stepped to the podium and presented Toyota and Kettle with Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals. Cunningham cited each man’s lengthy record of community service that preceded their ascension to elected offices. Toyota presented Creston Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Mike Moore with the Governor General’s Fire Services Exemplary Service Medal in recognition of “20 years of loyal and exemplary service to public safety in Canada.” Council Briefs •RCMP Staff Sgt. Thunder Cats lose 5-3 in season’s final game BY BRIAN LAWRENCE Advance Editor

With playoff hopes dashed a week earlier, the Creston Valley Thunder Cats played their final game of the 2012-2013 season on Saturday, losing 5-3 to the Columbia Valley Rockies, who finished the season with 48 points, seven ahead of the Thunder Cats. “Our guys played pretty hard,” said head coach Josh Hepditch. “We outshot them 45-32. I give them full credit for that. It’s a tough game to get motivated for.” The Thunder Cats started the scoring with a power-play goal by Joey Berget at 15:08 in the first period. Two Rockies goals followed, and Jaiden Ward scored a second Thunder Cats goal 10 minutes later. In the second period, the Rockies scored at 18:24, before Matti Jmaeff tied the score

3-3 with a goal at 12:01. The Rockies scored two more goals in the third period. Despite knowing they were at the bottom of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League’s Eddie Mountain Division, and that the Rockies were the team that put them there, the Thunder Cats weren’t out for revenge and played a relatively disciplined game. “They did it with pride and with class, I think,” said Hepditch. “They went about it the right way and just played hard.” The team started the season in a difficult position, with nine out of 10 top scorers of the 2011-2012 season not returning. But the newcomers learned quickly and “we had a pretty strong hockey team,” said Hepditch. “It was unfortunate that we dug such a deep hole that we couldn’t get out of it

I think we took some strides in right direction this year.

It’s a shame when worthy recipients of an honour are left with mixed emotions about their awards. But that’s exactly what happened when Mayor Ron Toyota and Regional District of Central Kootenay chair John Kettle were notified that they would be receiving Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals. I am firmly on side when it comes to extending recognition to people for a job or jobs well done, for contributions that go above and beyond the norm, for unusually long service to community or country. But it seems that the Governor General’s responsibility to oversee the distribution of 60,000 medals to mark the Queen’s 60 years of reign was simply overwhelming. To have been fair, each and every recipient would have had to be judged on a similar set of criteria. But that is not what happened. When MLA Michelle Mungall was asked to select some recipients she turned the process to constituents, asking for nominations and then using a committee to make the final choices. MP David Wilks asked for the recommendations of local officials. Others received their awards on the basis of positions they held. Toyota and Kettle both expressed their unease to me, because there was an appearance that they were receiving the awards as mayor and RDCK chair, respectively, and not because of their many volunteer contributions to our community. Both acknowledged that they headed teams of elected

officials who weren’t receiving medals, and that they were being paid in their positions. My unsolicited advice to both men was to accept the awards with

They joined me in rejoicing at the recent news that the housing society has secured land, thanks to the Town of Creston, for family units. We also know that provincial funding will be necessary to make these homes a reality. Although budgets are tight right now, it doesn’t mean we can’t make things like this family development happen, and I look forward to working with the housing society to meet this goal. We know Creston is a fabulous place to live. Ensuring that it is affordable for all its residents is a worthwhile endeavour that we can do together. Time change not wanted To the Editor: I am writing this letter to let everyone know that the issue of “time change” is not a bad reflection on anyone on either side of this discussion. Some folks have made this issue personal when in fact it is just a point of discussion where not all are going to be satisfied no matter the outcome. Judy Gadicke is a friend of mine as well as serving as an exemplary member of Creston town council. Additionally, her stance on time change does not in any way reflect on her character or the fact she is one of the most incredible schoolteachers in the valley — just ask any student she has taught. This is not personal with her but a position on an issue she has taken on behalf of her constituents. Once the Town of Creston sent directly to the province a request to have this issue on the May ballot I needed to know what Regional District of Central Kootenay Area B residents felt about this issue for a submission to the Crown on their behalf. I asked Judy to write a factoid for the Area B newsletter so I could get a feel from my constituents on their position concerning time change. Since I was elected in 2002, this issue has come up at least once a year. It is my opinion this issue for Area B needs to come to a conclusion once and for all. It is not productive! It is time consuming and it is divisive when we have huge issues we need to be discussing such as, fire protection, water, waste, roads, library, rec center infrastructure and more. I now have received from Area B residents a huge response to the question of time change. The options offered in the Area B newsletter opinion poll were simply “No change — leave it the way it is” or change to “Daylight savings — same as Cranbrook all year; spring ahead, fall back”. Results of this opinion poll are available at www.rdckareab.ca. Suffice to say, my direction on behalf of my contingents on time change is now very clear. By an overwhelming response of 77 per cent, Area B residents have said “no change” when it comes to their time zone. I will be informing the attorney general that RDCK Area B will not be participating in or supporting any future efforts to

To the Editor: (Re: “All are free to choose God or hell”, Feb. 7 Advance, page 7) As human beings, we definitely have an interest in understanding what our Creator says about hell/hellfire. Jesus mentions different severities of suffering for those who ultimately reject Him. (Luke 12:47, 48) As an example: Two unrepentant persons are finally lost. One murdered two people, one murdered 200. Both receive the penalty of death, but if that was all, it would not be fair. One will suffer more than the other, before death, because of their actions. (Romans 2:5, 6) After their term of punishing, each lost person will be ash. Their smoke will have ascended, “forever and ever.” (Revelation 14:10, 11) They will never be reconstructed. When we burn firewood, the smoke rises and disperses forever and ever. The wood is not eternally burning or existing. It burns for a certain amount of time and then is gone, permanently. The end result for the lost, however, is the same: death. Only the gift of God is eternal life. He does not force this gift onto the lost against their will. (Romans 6:23, Ezekiel 18:20) Eternal life is only given to those who choose and accept it, in Jesus Christ. (John 3:16) Satan himself is promised eternal death, non-existence, at Jesus’ final victory. (Ezekiel 28:19, Revelation 20:10) The only aspect of hell/hellfire that is eternal is its outcome: non-existence. Death is the opposite of life, not another dimension of it. (Ecclesiastes 9:5) When hell/hellfire is brought into existence, the lost will have a period of unrepentant suffering and rebellious regret. Then, they will be no more. There is no eternal suffering anywhere, by anyone. Jesus wants a completely happy, healthy universe when this horrifying experiment with sin and crime is over. (Malachi 4:1-3, Obadiah 1:16, Revelation 20:5-15, 21:4) God’s gift of eternal life is valuable beyond comprehension. May it be ours. Ken Lemky Creston

To the Editor: It was exciting for me to read in the Feb. 7 Advance (“Downtown parking to remain free indefinitely”) that council is considering staff’s report on possibly having the parking meters serve as voluntary donation meters that support our local charities. Ten years ago, such an option was presented in the downtown revitalization manual, which would have made it the first in the nation to do such a program (if not the world). Now there are a few other communities that have artistically beautified donation parking meters. Just Google and you can find wonderful photos of them with their inspiring stories. Just imagine how voluntary meters can enhance the quality of our town and community! All the proceeds collected from the meters can go toward local service groups and charities. The high visibility of the charity parking meters can inspire donating and make it easy to do so. People will be able to drop their spare change into the meter when they are downtown and some may even bring in their dresser drawer change to load up the meters. Having the donation meters can free up the charity groups’ time and energy for delivering their unique valued service rather than constantly having to fundraise. The town can also work with the local artists to make each meter also into folk art. Each unique meter can be an expression of the caring qualities of this community. It will be like having sculptures throughout downtown. Who said we were boring? Do you know what else? We could catch the attention of the media, thereby indirectly promoting our area. Folks visiting who see the meters can get a good impression of our community. Setting this kind of impression can also attract new residents who are aligned with our caring considerate local culture. We have an amazing town council and administration. I am sure they can also find a way to make this happen. Where there is a will there is a way. These activities keep us physically well but have many other advantages too. Our visits to the community complex let us mix with young families, we are exposed to seasonal festivities that are going on and we often see friends and neighbors we have not seen for a long time. Because many of the TAPS seniors are over 85 years of age, they do not have to pay the activity fee, a real benefit for seniors. There are other expenses to participating in these activities, though. The Creston Valley Aquatic Society has generously offered to support transportation and staff costs for the next 10 months so that seniors will continue to be physically healthy and connected to their community. Disability may qualify for tax relief

Canadians living with disabilities are eligible for a number of tax breaks designed to compensate for the extra expenses incurred. Even if you haven’t claimed your disability in the past, you may want to check if you qualify this year. The guidelines have recently been modified to include more Canadians. What does “disabled” mean? A disability is a severe impairment which makes it extremely difficult or time-consuming for you to carry out basic activities of daily living, even if you are undergoing therapy and using appropriate devices and medications. The impairment must last or be expected to last 12 months and severely restrict your ability to see, walk, speak, hear or perform personal care activities or seriously affect your mental capacity to manage your personal affairs. The definition has been expanded to allow for the cumulative effect of multiple impairments that individually would not be severe enough to qualify. For example, a taxpayer with multiple sclerosis who constantly experiences fatigue, depressed mood and balance problems will probably now qualify. Additional modifications also make it easier for sufferers of Type 1 juvenile diabetes to claim the disability credit. Generally, diabetics only qualify if their condition requires “life-sustaining therapy” for at

least three times a week for a total of at least 14 hours. In the past, taxpayers who controlled their condition with a syringe generally did not qualify under this provision. This is because Canada Revenue Agency took into account only the time administering the insulin when determining if the 14-hour requirement was met. However, the government has added the monitoring of blood sugar levels and dosage requirements to the types of activities that constitute therapy. As a result, more diabetics should now qualify. But before you start adding up your expenses, you must first file Form T2201 — the Disability Tax Credit Certificate — with your return. The form has to be completed by a doctor, optometrist, audiologist, occupational therapist, psychologist, physiotherapist or speech language pathologist and is used by the CRA to determine if your disability meets the prescribed requirements. What credits are available? For 2012, the basic federal disability claim is $7,546, which translates into a federal tax credit of $1,131. The provincial tax savings vary depending on where you are living. Because it is a non-refundable credit, it only works to reduce your tax payable — it is not refunded if you don’t have any tax owing. If you don’t use the entire credit, you may be able to transfer it to someone else, such as a spouse or parent. For disabled children under

18, there is also a $4,402 supplement, which will increase the maximum federal claim to $11,948. However, this amount is reduced by child care expenses and attendant care expenses in excess of $2,578 that were claimed for the child. Disabled children can also qualify for the new $500 Children’s Fitness Credit, including an additional $500 tax credit for any additional equipment that needs to be purchased to participate in an activity. There are cases when taxpayers support a relative who does not meet the strict definition of “disabled,” but is still dependant by reason of an infirmity. If the dependant lives with you and has net income of less than $15,033 you may be able to claim a caregiver amount of up to $4,402, for a potential federal tax break of $660. If the dependant does not live with you, you may still be able to claim an amount for infirm dependants if his or her net income is less than $6,420. However, in both cases, the dependant must be at least 18 at the end of the year. Each province also has its own disability and caregiver credits. Be sure to check the provincial credits available to you. The 2007 Federal Budget introduced the WITB designed to help lower-income Canadians transition into the workforce. For disabled taxpayers, the WITB supplement will be equal to 25 percent of earned income in excess of $1,150, up to a maximum of

$485. The amount will be reduced for single taxpayers with no dependants with a net income in excess of $17,478 and for families with a net family income in excess of $26,952. In some cases, an attendant is required to help care for the disabled person. The cost of attendant care can be claimed as a medical expense. However, if the attendant care cost exceeds $10,000, you cannot claim both the expenses and the disability amount — you have to decide which credit results in the most tax savings. If you incur disability-related expenses in order to work or go to

school, you may also be able to claim a deduction for them. For example, if you require a teletypewriter to make and receive phone calls, you may be able to deduct the cost. If you need an attendant to work or go to school, it will also be more beneficial to claim the cost under this provision instead of as a medical expense. The majority of Canadians admit to paying cash to avoid the sales tax, according to a recent survey by Leger Marketing for H&R Block. Even more telling is only 30 per cent of Canadians said it was wrong to avoid tax by paying cash. “Canadians like to complain about the weather and taxes, so it is not surprising that some people are trying to take some measures to reduce their tax bills,” says Cleo Hamel, a senior tax analyst with H&R Block. “Paying cash may be tempting but there are legal options to pay less tax.” Hamel recommends exploring legal shelters like Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSP) and Tax Free Savings Accounts (TFSA) for some tax relief. Tax loss selling of investments and donating to charity can also help reduce your tax liability. The survey also showed Canadians were not just looking for tax breaks for themselves. Fifty-one per cent said waiters and waitresses should not have to pay taxes on their tips. And even though the

majority of Canadians said they had never bartered, 69 per cent said you should not have to report bartered or traded items or services on your annual tax return. “Unfortunately, tips are considered income and need to be reported on your tax return, whether you think they should be included or not,” explains Hamel. “The same applies to bartered goods and services.
