Coleton Nelson’s memory kept alive two years later
Murderer continues to victimize from jail

A large throng of supporters turned out at Aldergrove Arena Monday evening with candles and balloons to help the Nelson family remember 12-year-old Coleton, who was killed in a vehicle collision two years ago. The Nelson family, parents Coleton Brenda Nelson and Wayne, and sisters Chrystie and Alecsa, lost their son and brother, Coleton, on Feb. 18, 2011, in a crash at Robertson Crescent and 256 Street. Coleton was a passenger in the car, which was broadsided by a garbage truck, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Coleton was a popular local student and player #10 for his Aldergrove Minor Hockey team. The community has kept his memory alive with memorial services at the Aldergrove

For Holly Chamberlain, the nightmare of losing her brother and sister-in-law in a gruesome double murder in Langley in 2001 was bad enough. The grief and the way her brother, John Cleaveland Heasman, 37, and Linda Lee Anderson, 39, were killed left her traumatized beyond belief. Twelve years later, the man who killed them continues to victimize her family. Since William James McCotter entered the justice system he has manipulated it, grabbing headlines across the country for his ability to delay his trial for five years by firing every lawyer legal aid has given him and launching every appeal possible. An appeal he made to overturn his sentences was dismissed last February. Now he is appealing when he should be eligible for parole. It was set at 20 years when he was sentenced in 2007. “When is enough, enough?” asked Chamberlain from her home on Vancouver Island. “It is beyond belief that he can drag our families through all of this over and over again. He has all the rights and we have none,” she said. Chamberlain said every time McCotter files an appeal, she is notified and she has to tell her brother’s children and her family and the hurt comes to the surface again. The same goes for Anderson’s family. Since being arrested near the beaten and bloodied bodies of his victims, McCotter has played the system, she said. First, it took far too long for the case to go to trial, hampered by the accused continually firing lawyers to delay the case.

Finally, a judge stepped in and told McCotter they had had enough of his games and he must stick with the lawyer he was given or go it alone.
THE TRIAL
The trial was graphic, lengthy and traumatic, said Chamberlain, who sat through each gruelling day, including the bizarre and disturbing testimony of McCotter who seemed to enjoy his re-telling of the events. Because she lives on the Island, Chamberlain had to stay with a friend so she could attend. Due to health conditions, her parents were advised by Crown counsel not to attend. “Every sheriff in that courthouse hugged me when the jury came back, because I had gotten to know them all because we were there so long. “There wasn’t a dry eye in the jury with this trial. It was so awful,” she said. But a decade later, the system refuses to let the family move on, she said. McCotter was picked up almost immediately after he brutally kicked and bludgeoned his ex-girlfriend, Anderson, and her common law partner, Heasman, to death outside their Langley City apartment on Dec. 2, 2001. The restraining order against McCotter had recently run out. Anderson had a brief relationship with McCotter a few years prior, before going out with Heasman. During the trial, it was revealed that McCotter couldn’t let go, once kicking down Anderson’s door, causing her to begin the restraining order process. His trial heard that on the day of the murders he stalked the pair and purchased a jock strap and steel toed boots. He parked outside their apartment, got out and used the boots to kick both his victims in the head repeatedly. He also viciously beat the pair with a 2x4 that he pulled out of a truck parked at the scene. The coroner couldn’t determine whether the fatal blows were caused by the boots or the 2x4. It’s because of this that McCotter couldn’t be charged with first-degree murder. People in the building awoke to screaming. Several men tried to stop McCotter, to no avail. In the trial, it was learned that Anderson, a care worker at Langley Lodge, had predicted her own murder. She told a co-worker she thought McCotter would kill her and said it was all written in her diary. The diary was never found. McCotter even told another friend of Anderson’s that he was going to kill her,

which protects the rights of all individuals, including those accused or convicted of criminal offences.” “McCotter is a master manipulator, and he runs the system. This kind of craziness has to stop,” said Chamberlain. “It’s just not fair to the families.” She wants to see changes in the system. “We’ve seen changes happen. Look at Grant’s Law, that has made a real impact. Grant [De Patie] was killed the same year as my brother,” she said. Grant’s Law, requires everyone pay at the pump before they get gas to eliminate the dangers of gas theft. It also requires more than one employee work the night shift.

Public interest in City budget is minimal
Township asks for more money
dan Ferguson Times Reporter
City’s staffing levels, saying they are as lean as they can get in any municipality. “The letter suggested (the budget) could be pared down. There is no fat to cut away from here,” he said. “We realize it’s not a bottomless pit.” Once the budget passes fourth and final reading (likely in early March) City of Langley residents will see their municipal property taxes — including fees for services such as garbage, recycling, water and sewage — rise an average of 1.88 per cent. For owners of single family dwellings, the increase will be 2.36 per cent, while owners of apartments and condos will see .51 per cent rise. Taxpayers will also fund a .75 per cent levy, which is expected to raise $160,000 per year to help replace the City’s aging infrastructure. Council members bicker — www.langleytimes.com

The average Langley Township homeowner is facing a $41 increase in their annual tax bill. The proposed $256 million budget for 2013 would raise taxes 2.79 per cent, which would increase the yearly rate for a $485,000 home from $1,490 to $1,531. That works out to an increase of $3.42 a month, according to the budget report posted on the Township web site. The online report says the Township tax hike is in line with the increases proposed by other Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley municipalities, including those who get a share of the profit from local casinos. Among the 15 other communities surveyed by the Township, six were in the two per cent range — Abbotsford, Delta, Maple Ridge, New Westminster, City of North Vancouver, and Vancouver. Seven were in the three per cent range — Burnaby, Chilliwack, Coquitlam, Langley City, Pitt Meadows, Richmond and Surrey. Port Moody was proposing to raise taxes more than six per cent. The proposed Township tax increase is higher than the current rate of inflation in Canada, which is 1.3 per cent. The report says that is due to a higher rate of inflation experienced by municipalities, much of it payroll-related. “Major expenditures for a municipality are salary/wages and contracts which increase at a much greater rate.” Depending on the Township department, salaries make up between a third to two-thirds of all expenses. For example, the fire department wages are 76 per cent of total costs, while wages are 31 per cent of parks expenses and 61 per cent of “general government” expenses. Other cost items include a $1.28 million increase in the policing contract, plans to add 12 officers to the local RCMP detachment over the next five years, as well as road maintenance and construction projects like the new Mufford Crescent overpass. The report says the Township offers a competitive business tax rate compared to other Metro Vancouver communities. “The relationship of Light Industry/Commercial Tax Ratios to residential is of interest to organizations considering locating their industry or business in the Township,” it states. The report says the planned Langley business tax rate increase is in the same two per cent range as most B.C. municipalities with more than 50,000 people. The budget is part of a five-year financial plan that would see slightly higher tax increases in the future of 2.95 per cent every year until 2017. A final vote on the tax hike is set for April.
public before we sit down to negotiate,” he said. Council also received a letter from Pam Reid — a 13-year resident of the City, who suggested more cuts could be made to avoid another tax increase. Reid told council that while she respects their work, “I always feel, at tax time, there could have been just a little bit more done.” Since the global economic crash of 2008, she noted, “the onus is on cutting back, spending less, tightening the belt. “We all function off a budget and when times get tough we rake that budget through the coals until we can make it work . . . . We learn to do without a few things and we learn to live leaner until times get better. “As the saying goes, ‘the public purse is not a bottomless pit.’” Councillor Ted Schaffer defended the
TIME TO UPDATE!
U E
If many City of Langley residents are upset about the prospect of another municipal tax increase, it would be difficult to tell. Council gave third reading to its 201317 financial plan on Monday night. Before that happened, the public had an opportunity to provide feedback, but only three people chose to do so. And of those, two found fault with it. Two residents — Rhys Griffiths and Paul Albrecht — spoke at the meeting, while one other person submitted a letter to council. Speaking first, Griffiths told council that his property assessment rose 7.8 per cent in the past year. “I’m not pleased; it doesn’t endear me to any municipal tax increase of any
sort,” he said. Most of Griffiths’ concerns centred around the City’s largest cost drivers — salaries and benefits — which total around $11 million per year. In a municipality of just over 25,000 people, there are 14 staff members on salary who make more than $100,000 per year, Griffiths noted. “Frankly, it astounds me to have that number of employees at that level,” he said. Asked what is proposed in terms of upcoming salary increases, CAO Francis Cheung explained that because the City is now entering negotiations with CUPE and IAFF (the firefighters’ union) he could not offer specifics. Mayor Peter Fassbender assured Griffiths that the City’s negotiating staff are going to “do the best deal possible,” both in terms of salaries and benefits. “We don’t put our position into the

Jury trial selected
Monique TaMMinga Times Reporter
A Langley elementary school teacher accused of molesting one of her students has elected for a jury trial. Deborah Ralph, 58, was in Provincial Court in Surrey on Tuesday for a preliminary hearing, accompanied by two of her lawyers. The preliminary hearing heard testimony from her accuser, who is now a grown man. There is a ban on publication on any information that takes place in a preliminary hearing. Ralph is charged with one count of sexual assault and one count
of sexual interference of a person under the age of 14. It is allegedly Ralph sexually assaulted a male student between December 1998 and June 2001. The alleged victim contacted Langley RCMP on Nov. 8, 2011 to report he had been sexually assaulted by Ralph. He had been one of her students at James Kennedy Elementary School. He once was her student, but alleges he was assaulted when she was no longer his teacher. Ralph taught at the school from September 1987 to June 2010. She was suspended with pay after she was charged.

vehicles in 2012 was up seven per cent over the year prior. It may seem insignificant to leave loose change in the console, but the cost in time and money to repair damage to a vehicle is significant. Most people have to pay a $300 deductible. Over a two-week period, Langley RCMP auxiliaries and Community Police volunteers walked through residential areas in the Fort Langley and Yorkson checking parallel parked vehicles for invitations to auto crime. If a car was found to be unlocked, to have valuables in plain view, or have a visible garage door opener
— the volunteers would attend the residences nearby to locate the owner and offer some safety tips and a crime prevention notice. Over five days, volunteers distributed 392 notices and went to 516 homes. Car owners can protect themselves against license plate decal theft by removing the older decals before applying the new one. These decals are designed to shred if they are removed, however when there is a build-up, thieves can use a knife to cut off the last few layers so that the top (current) decal remains intact. Bait cars are being set up all around Metro Vancouver to catch thieves who break into vehicles.

Flattering the NDP
Stepping aside
he BC Liberal government’s plans to boost income taxes on business and high-income earners takes a page out of the NDP opposition’s plans, and makes sense. The NDP plan had called for the corporate tax rate to go to 12 per cent, where it stood in 2008. The BC Liberals are boosting the corporate tax rate to 11 per cent on April 1. The provincial government also will impose a higher personal income tax rate on individuals with incomes of $150,000 or more. Their provincial income taxes will rise 2.1 per cent to a rate of 16.8 per cent, as of Jan. 1, 2014. Both of these tax increases are necessary at this time, given the financial shackles the province is in. It has been running large deficits, at least partly because of much lower natural gas prices, which have affected government revenues. The province is claiming it will balance the budget in 2013-14, largely because it plans to sell more than $600 million in surplus property. Given that the real estate market has softened somewhat, that is probably an optimistic figure. There is nothing wrong with selling surplus properties, but there are probably too many properties on this list. The provincial government is also boosting MSP premiums again next year. This is completely unfair to moderate income earners, who do not get the exemption from paying the premiums that goes to low income people. This will be the fifth year in a row the premiums will increase, and they will have jumped by about 30 per cent since 2008. There should be no boost in MSP premiums. This budget is crafted with the May 14 election in mind, and while its revenue assumptions may be sound, as economist Tim O’Neill asserted on Monday, it is very much a political document. It is designed to convince wavering voters that the BC Liberals are competent money managers. Over the course of the past 12 years, the Liberals have been sound money managers much of the time, but in recent years their record has been more mixed. The Liberals were hoping for a big boost in revenue through the HST, but that was torpedoed by voters because of the bumbling way the government brought in the tax. That hurt their reputation as competent managers. By adopting part of the NDP platform, the Liberals may have unintentionally telegraphed that the NDP too has sound fiscal ideas.

ohn Duncan’s surprise resignation as minister of aboriginal affairs and northern development brings some answers — and questions. The prime minister issued a terse press release Friday, saying Duncan had quit his cabinet post, would remain as Vancouver Island North MP and would be replaced as minister on an interim basis by James Moore. Duncan admitted he quit because he wrote an inappropriate letter to the Tax Court on behalf of a constituent. He violated the principle that separates elected officials from the judiciary. Duncan wrote the letter two years ago, but the federal cabinet apparently discovered it was improper only recently during an internal review that arose from rulings last month by Ethics Commissioner Mary Dawson. At least that’s the Conservatives’ story, and they’re sticking to it. Duncan is only the seventh federal cabinet minister to resign in the seven years Stephen Harper — notoriously reluctant to admit a mistake — has been PM. Duncan holds one of only two Tory seats on Vancouver Island, another reason why his resignation came as a surprise. He has had heart trouble in recent years, and underwent surgery two years ago, although it’s believed his health has improved lately. That would be a good thing because the aboriginal affairs file has been stressful. As minister, Duncan has had to promote a Harper government agenda guaranteed to rile Canada’s native people. No matter what you think of Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence or how native bands spend government funding, Duncan’s confrontation with her was a public relations black eye for him. She became a focal point for the Idle No More movement that just won’t go away. An honourable, proud man, he can refocus on constituent work in one of the largest, farthest-flung ridings in Canada. —Comox Valley Record The Langley Times is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. Make citizens happy about cannons Editor: On Feb. 4, at the council meeting where the Glenval Organics composting facility proposal for Fort Langley was discussed, council unanimously rejected the idea. I am writing because of a remark made by Councillor Grant Ward — “Our citizens have to be happy.” Following a town hall meeting on Jan. 17, where more than 100 people were in attendance, many spoke or later submitted written responses. There was near-universal demand for banning the use of propane cannons and their cousins, the orchard pistol and screecher. No one from the blueberry industry spoke nor submitted a written response, despite a well-publicized request to Township residents,
including calls from the B.C. Blueberry Council to their more than 800 member farms. If the cannon is such an essential part of the blueberry industry, why will no residents stand up and defend the practice? The B.C. Blueberry Council’s own statistics indicate that as of 2010, some 50 property owners controlled the estimated 125 blueberry farms in the Township. Since 2010, there has been a dramatic increase in the number s of new plantings and with it a corresponding increase in complaints. Since the Township will not receive complaints about cannons, but refers them directly to the Blueberry Council, Bylaw Enforcement can state they have never received a complaint.
True, but ludicrous. If Councillor Ward’s comments are to be believed, it would suggest that since the citizens must be happy and those that spoke and wrote in are not, does that mean the council can make us happy? If this is the case, be sure to attend the council meeting on Apr. 8, when the Agricultural Advisory Council recommendations on the cannon issues will be presented to Township council. Watch for the classic move to “refer to staff for a report,” as this will simply mean endless delays and another summer of increased cannon blasting in the Horse Capital of B.C. Kevin Mitchell, Langley
School calendar has evolved over time Editor: While G.E. MacDonell makes a few salient points in his letter (The Times, Feb. 14), he or she has overlooked the evolution of schooling in Canada and North America. When Canada and the U.S. were agricultural economies, school breaks consisted of planting season and harvesting season. Due to climate, this break was varied throughout North America. Once North America shifted to an
manufacturing economy, the needs of the agriculture sector for school breaks became subservient to the requirement of consistency in the business community, a schedule that continues today. The final paragraph in the original letter says it all. When I attended school in the 1940s and 1950s, I was in school by 8 a.m. Lunch was from 12 to 1 p.m., and we were out of school at 4 p.m., in the afternoon.
Easter break and Christmas were all the times we spent away from school, except for summer break. That was from the last day of June to the first day of September. I have three family members in the school system, and they decry the shortened days. Many parents think the school is a babysitter, rather than a place of learning. Terry Brenan, Aldergrove

provide an answer. Some. like myself, are running as candidates. Some are helping out with the campaign to oust the “same old, same old” in favour of the “other guy” or new kid on the block. While I would ask potential voters to look at the common sense platform of the BC Conservatives, I am also hoping that the desire to rid themselves of this government might spurn them on to help out with the campaign or ignite a sense of volunteerism. It’s a great time to get on board, as the BC Conservative Party is a grassroots party that derives its flavour from the bottom up. It’s a chance
It could be a tragic shortcut
Editor: I’ve always found one of the greatest ironies was the positioning of Brookswood Secondary next to a shooting range. Considering it further, it would not just be a planning oxymoron, like Lynden’s old meat processing plant next to the cemetery. If set in the United States, it would be a tragic psychopathic shortcut. But don’t despair, Canada. You’ve prepared for zombie disaster awareness, while we, south of you, are home to teenagers who shuffle into the house and turn off President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address, and change channels to cartoons. All I can say is, “If you are our future, I am freaking scared to death.” Cathleen Chance Vecchiato, Sonoma, California
Conservative welcomes voter feedback Editor: I wanted to take a moment to let residents in the Fort LangleyAldergrove constituency know that there is now a real choice, for those unsure of who to vote for in the upcoming provincial election on May 14. There are a lot of undecided voters out there asking themselves the question “who am I going to vote for?” Others are saying “I’m tired of the same old government that doesn’t listen and I don’t think B.C. could take another four-year financial hit from the NDP. Who’s left?” Similar questions have prompted many to join the BC Conservatives to
Editor: Most people who oppose the upcoming SkyTrain fare-gates seem to have not realized that part of the reason that TransLink and the ministry of transportation want to introduce fare gates is so that integration with the upcoming Compass transit fare-card can be achieved. The Compass card and the data it obtains from its ability to track the beginning and end points of all transit trips will spawn huge improvements region-wide in transit service optimization and cost efficiency. These improvements will offset the capital and annual costs of the fare-gates. Without the fare-gates, there would be no way to figure out what trips occur on SkyTrain and no way to optimize, based on those trips. That would be counter-productive, as SkyTrain is a part of so many transit trips in the region. The Compass card concept is the same concept already introduced on the transit system in Montreal, and is used worldwide in transit systems. For example: In Tokyo, Japan, a single moneycontaining fare card will grant you access to not just the local metro, JR commuter rail and local bus lines, but also vending machines if you want a snack or a drink or one of the unique items dispensed through vending machines in Japan. Once the Compass card becomes a part of our transit system, everyone’s going to have a better experience on transit here in Metro Vancouver. Daryl Dela Cruz, Surrey

B.C. gas boom is real, all right W
h e t h e r C h r i s t y Clark’s government survives the May election or not, the natural gas “Prosperity Fund” idea floated in last week’s throne speech is a useful one. B.C. is poised to join Alberta in the upper rank of energy producing jurisdictions, with an expanding network of natural gas collection, refining and processing into liquid (LNG) for export. Clark’s pre-election throne speech proposed a resource fund similar to Alberta’s Heritage Fund that would be reserved for debt reduction and
major projects, rather than spent on programs, which tends to happen under the political pressure of four-year election cycles. Opposition politicians and media commentators have dismissed this as a preelection stunt. They note that the LNG industry in B.C. doesn’t exist yet, and may never produce the hundreds of billions of dollars projected over the next 30 years. I returned for a visit to B.C.’s northeast earlier this month, and I can tell you the gas boom is real. My parents homesteaded east of Daw-

Let the pseudoscientific attacks begin from PAGE 11
shale gas be seen as a priority for new global investment in LNG? For one thing, we’re a stable democratic country with a mature industry and competent regulation. Secondly, the shipping advantage of the Kitimat and Prince Rupert ports to the Pacific Rim has finally been recognized internationally, as coal, forest products, grain and container traffic has climbed in recent years. B.C. has another advantage that appears to be increasingly important. The shale gas deposits are deep, under a kilometre or more of solid rock, and most are in remote, sparsely inhabited locations. That adds cost to the pipeline system, but it has a benefit. At the beginning of the year I predicted that the international protest movement that dishonestly targets Alberta oil would soon turn to demonizing natural gas. That pseudo-scientific attack has begun, right here in B.C. I’ll have more on that in a subsequent column. The provincial government has announced $100,000 in funding toward construction of a 5.8 km bikeway that will run from 208 Street to Golden Ears Bridge in Langley Township. The money will be used to widen the shoulders of Allard Crescent on both sides of the road to accommodate cyclists. “Langley has an active and thriving cycling community,” said Mary Polak, MLA for Langley and Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “This funding will help increase the amount of trails and routes they can utilize.” The Jan. 30 press release announcing the funding said Langley is among 20 communities that will share more than $7.36 million in BikeBC funding. The money will pay for 21 projects to expand and build cycling lanes, trails, and paths, with the aim of increasing physical activity and helping reduce greenhouse gases. A student-led initiative to create a community garden in Fort Langley has taken root and is starting to flourish. The recently formed Fort Langley Community Garden Association along with the Langley Fine Arts Green Team have organized a land ceremony on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 2 p.m., in Fort Langley Community Park where the gardens will be. Members of the Kwantlen First Nation
will provide the blessing. The garden will be constructed on traditional Kwantlen, Katsie and Matsqui First Nations’ land. Kevin Kelly, a Kwantlen representative, will preside over the ceremony. Everyone in the community is invited to attend. Team leader, Deven Azevedo, a Grade 12 student at Langley Fine Arts School and last year’s environmental hero in the youth category, origi-
nally conceived the project. He then assembled the Green Team leadership group, consisting of fellow grade 12 students Sydney Gobin, Ingrid Libera, and Aidan Hoffman. The group grew to include 12 more students. Their vision and infectious enthusiasm has rallied support from wide-ranging sectors of the community. dents and community members in sustainable living and provide people with a way to connect with nature,” Deven said when asked why the students were so committed to the project. The project has been financed by donations from Marcon Construction, the Langley School District Foundation, Langley Fine Arts Parent Advisory Committee, the Township and the Sunrise Rotary Club. Construction is expected to begin within two weeks of the blessing ceremony. The garden is expected to open on April 4. The Garden will provide Fort Langley community members with an opportunity to garden organically. It will also be used by the school as a tool to educate its students on the importance of sustainable development, food security, and building a con-
nection with nature. In addition, the Langley Fine Arts Aboriginal Program intends to use the garden as a cultural teaching space. Project Kenya Sister Schools, a non-profit school based charity, also has plans for the garden; they hope to show the importance of school gardens in both Kenya and Canada. It is hoped that the extra produce from the school plots can be sold to help fund more school gardens in Africa. Elders in the community, several who are experienced gardeners, have committed to volunteering their time to teach beginners how to garden. Those involved hope the garden will not only provide a forum for teaching lost skills, but will also act as a bridge between generations. The garden will have 34 boxes, six of which will be handicap accessible. Twentytwo have already been spoken for. The boxes are available on a first come first serve basis and limited to Fort Langley residents. If you are interested in obtaining a box or would like more information contact Penny Carnrite at pcarnrite@ sd35.bc.ca. For the ceremony, the park is at the intersection of Nash Street and St. Andrews Avenue. Parking is available at Langley Fine Arts School.

F We are re the Kin Kin’ss Green en Fight Fighters! ers! 13 contestants take e the healthy—follow along and watch as they achieve their goals Beginning March 1st follow Amanda’s 13 week journey to a healthier lifestyle. Amada will be up against 12 other Greater Vancouver contestants in the hopes of becoming the ultimate Green Fighter and winning the grand prize of a cruise for two to LA.
Amanda takes the challenge for Langley… Reason for Applying: Four years ago my mother passed away from colon cancer. Colon cancer runs in my family, and I have been making unhealthy eating choices that would put me even more at risk. I have always wanted to participate in a walk/run for cancers below the waist in honour of my mom, but still have yet to do it. I feel that I don’t have something I would like to accomplish this year, to raise more money and to fall in love with healthy eating.

Oval Village
River Park Place brings excitement to Richmond By Kerry Vital
Located in the heart of Richmond’s Oval Village neighbourhood, River Park Place will be part of a masterplanned community that is pedestrianfriendly and just minutes away from everything that Richmond has to offer. Whether it’s a walk on the dyke that winds all the way to Steveston or some evening entertainment at the River Rock Casino, nothing is out of reach. The Richmond Oval Village is expected to become a new lifestyle hub, with restaurants, shops and leisure activities, and Intracorp is getting in at the start of it. A new T&T Supermarket, scheduled to open in late 2013, will add to the convenience. Grocery shopping will literally be walking distance away. The first phase of River Park Place is expected to go on sale in the spring, and will feature a 15-storey tower with one-, two- and three-bedroom homes. The floorplans are efficient and modern, with huge windows to take in your river and mountain views and gorgeous interior finishings. On the property, buyers will have use of a private banquet room, an indoor basketball and badminton practice court, music room, a media room, a fitness and yoga centre and a third-level rooftop amenity space with an outdoor grill and dining area, open-air fire pit lounge, community garden plots, tai chi pavilion and community greenways perfect for families to spend time together. You are also within walking distance of the Richmond Olympic Oval. The nearest Canada Line station is just a couple of blocks away, making commuting accessible even if you don’t own a car. River Park
Place is about five minutes from the Vancouver International Airport, and for those who love to shop and dine out, Aberdeen Centre and Richmond Centre are also a few minutes away. Homes start at $299,900. For more information and to register, visit www. riverparkplaceliving.ca, or call 604-2827838. If you register online now, you will have a chance to win a brand-new Range Rover Evoque. Starting on March 17, if you visit the River Park Place website daily, you’ll also have a chance to win exciting cash prizes.

Vector expansion in Langley delayed, but still on track Construction of enlarged helicopter repair facility to be completed by end of the year Dan Ferguson Langley Times
Vector Aerospace now expects to complete work on a newer and bigger helicopter repair facility at the Langley airport a year later than expected. When the relocation from the current 66,000 square foot building to a 104,000 square foot building was announced in February of 2012, the company said it expected to complete the move into the new premises by December of that year. Vector now expects construction will begin with a ground-breaking ceremony in the near future and the bigger facility will be completed by the end of the company’s fourth fiscal quarter, near the end of this year. No particular reason for the delay was given. The new building is expected to add a further 180 jobs, attract additional major investments
and nearly double the technical activity and production of the airport. In the original press release announcing the expansion, Elvis Moniz, vice-president of operations at Vector-Langley said the new facility would include a state-of-the-art paint booth capable of handling bigger aircraft like the Sikorsky S-61 and AS332 Super Puma along with three helipads to accommodate customer “fly-in” requirements. Vector in Langley carries out a wide range of major helicopter repairs, inspections and overhauls, including rebuilds and refurbishments, airframe and avionic refits and upgrades and custom interiors and modifications. It is part of the larger Vector Aerospace company that operates facilities in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, South Africa and Australia.

THE GATEWAY
OF HOPE
Oh What an Opportunity As an Advisor for the Gateway of Hope’s Opportunities Program, I have the pleasure of working with men and women who are on a journey of change. The Opportunities Program exists to support individuals who are making transitions in life. Opportunities Program Participants live in semi-independent, apartment-style quarters with bedrooms, a community kitchen and living area. Each person who enters the program is connected with an Advisor who becomes an accountability partner. As Advisors, we meet one on one with participants weekly and talk about areas of their life that need addressing in order for them not to be repeated. Our role as Advisors is to walk with a person through their struggles and success, to point everyone towards a more productive lifestyle, a lifestyle that recognizes what is healthy and what is not. Our goal is that each participant becomes a productive, healthy member of their community through three primary objectives: career employment, secure sustainable housing, and leaving the Gateway of Hope with a support system in place. I have learned that everyone I work with has incredible potential, and many have the desire to change. It is necessary to show an individual that they are worth the effort, that they are worthy and deserving of that change. That is our role, which is what causes long term change, when a person feels like someone is listening—that someone is invested in their success; they become invested in their success as well.

Back-to-back titles for Thunder For the second straight year, Langley has won the U19 tier 1 field lacrosse provincial title Gary ahuja Times Sports
After winning their first three round robin games at the provincial championships, the Langley Thunder seemed to be sitting pretty. But that quickly changed with an 1-9 loss to the Nanaimo Raiders in the final game before the playoff round. “We were feeling pretty good,” said Thunder coach Bryan Poole about his team’s mindset after defeating Delta 13-12, doubling Coquitlam 6-3 and then beating New Westminster 10-7. “I think (the loss) was an eye opener for our team that they can’t just show up and play,” Poole said. “They had to step it up and they did on Sunday. “It was awesome.” He was referring to a 13-8 victory over the same Nanaimo squad on Sunday afternoon. The two teams were playing for the gold medal at the U19 tier 1 provincial field lacrosse championships, which were held at Willoughby Community Park. Poole said he was most impressed by his team’s compete level in the gold medal game. “They would not give up,” he said. “As a coach watching, it is pretty awesome. “You ask them to go out and follow the plan and they executed it.” The Thunder turned a one-goal game into a huge lead as they strung together eight straight goals. The Raiders tried to rally, but Langley held firm, winning by five goals to capture their second consecutive title at this age group. With a veteran group of players combined with some first-year players who made timely contributions, Poole called the team a great mix. “We expected this group to win,” he said.

Langley Thunder’s Adam Gallen fends off the stick check of his New Westminster Salmonbellies opponent during round robin play at the U19 tier 1 provincial championships held at Willougbhy Community Park on Saturday. The Thunder captured the gold medal. “Honestly, it was just everybody doing their role and contributing.” Goaltender Ryley Brown earned most valuable player honours. “He earned it; he deserves every bit of it,” said Poole. “He is a leader back there and really communicates well with the defencemen. “It makes their job a lot easier when you have someone quarterbacking things back there. He is a great leader and we know he is going to make the saves.” Brett Dobray earned the
Warrior Fair Play Award while Poole was awarded the Fair Play coaches award. “We have a talented team but there are a few guys that stand out that we rely on a little bit more than others,” Poole said about Dobray. “That kid is outstanding, a great player.” Dobray missed half of last season’s B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League season with a concussion, but was still named the league’s rookie of the year. And at provincials, a sprained ankle hobbled Dobray, but he was still out there contributing.
••••• In addition to the U19 tier 1 and 2 boys championships, Willoughby Community Park also hosted the U12 and U15 girls championships. The Thunder had teams in both girls divisions, but neither found the podium. The U15 team went 2-3 while the U12 squad finished 0-3-1. And Langley’s Patricia Keizer was honoured with the B.C. Lacrosse Association volunteer award. Victoria (boys tier 2), Coquitlam (U15) and New Westminster (U12) won the other titles, respectively.
Pair make first cut for Team Canada A pair of Langley players have made the first cut in their quest to wear the Maple Leaf for Canada at the 2013 world ringette championships. Kacy Hannesson and Jennifer Wakefield were in Ottawa over the weekend for Ringette Canada’s senior women’s national team selection camp. And out of the 57 players invited, 27 were chosen. Hannesson is a 20-year-old who plays defence for the B.C. Thunder in the National Ringette League. She has four goals and 13 assists in 17 games. The 32-year-old Wakefield has 27 goals and 82 points in 19 games. The players will spend the next 10 months training for the world championships, which will be held at the end of December in North Bay, Ont. Twenty-two players will make the final team. Hannesson and Wakefield were also among the five Thunder players chosen for the NLL’s all-star game played on Saturday at the Brian Kilrea Arena in Ottawa. Also at the game were Melanie Thomas, Tiina Mononen and Salla Kyhala. Kyhala (56 goals, 95 points) and Mononen (25 goals, 72 points) are from Finland while Thomas is a defender from West Vancouver. She has one goal and 19 points on the season.

The Trinity Western Spartans are one win away from a chance to compete for their third consecutive national championship. The Spartans men’s volleyball team dispatched the Winnipeg Wesmen 3-0 and 3-2 last week in the best-of-three quarter-final series at the Langley Events Centre. The victory advanced Trinity Western to Edmonton this weekend as the Alberta Pandas host the Canada West final four championships. After winning in straight sets (25-23,2520,25-20) on Feb. 14, the Spartans were pushed to five sets on Feb. 15. Trinity Western won sets one and three 25-22 and 27-25 but the Wesmen responded in sets two and four, 25-20 and 25-23. But the fifth set was all TWU as they
whipped Winnipeg 15-4. The Spartans were led by Nick Del Bianco had 22 kills, 11 digs and four blocks, and Lucas Van Berkel, who had 10 kills, three blocks and a pair of aces. Steven Marshall added 16 kills and Dan Jansen Van Doorn had 11 blocks, including four in the fifth set alone. And setter Jarrod Offeriens had 57 assists. “I thought our middles were dominant and did their jobs,” said Spartans coach Ben Josephson. “All three of our outside hitters had spurts of really great play and then other spurts where we need to fix some things.” Game one saw a balanced attack with Del Bianco collecting 16 kills, Marshall with 11 and Brad Kufske with 10. Canada West final four championships from PAGE 38
Three of the four teams make the CIS national tournament in Quebec City. ••••• The Trinity Western Spartans defeated the Calgary Dinos 2-0 in their best-of-three Canada West quarter-final match and are now one victory from a spot in the national championships. The Spartans women’s volleyball team beat Calgary 3-0 (2517,25-20,27-25) and 3-1 (22-25,25-15,25-21,2521) on Feb. 14 and Feb. 15 at the Langley Events Centre. The team needs one win in their two matches at this weekend’s Canada West final four championships at UBC. Leading the way in Friday’s victory was Amber Brown, who delivered 23 kills — a new program-record for a four-set match —
for the second-ranked Spartans. She finished with an attacking percentage of .475. “I don’t know what it was in the fourth set, whenever Amber touched the ball, it was golden,” said coach Ryan Hofer. “She made a variety of shots; she was smart: she attacked the ball well and she hit at seams. “She was outstanding overall, but especially in that fourth set.” Alicia Perrin (12 kills, four blocks), Nicole Bazin (seven kills, five blocks) and Amy Ott (six kills, four blocks) all had solid matches. Kristen Moncks finished with 16 digs while Kelci French had 50 assists, a dozen digs and two aces. Trinity Western (193) faces Alberta (15-7) in one semifinal today (Thursday) while the other matches Mount Royal (14-8) versus UBC (21-1).

Trinity Western’s Carly Hamilton splits the block of Calgary Dinos’ Angelica Quiring (#5) and Lindsay Russell during the Spartans 3-0 victory in the opening match of the Canada West quarter-final last week at the Langley Events Centre. The Spartans won 2-0 and are at UBC this weekend for the Canada West final four championships.
Simon is there to support the Men of Hope and the B.C. Society for Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse. Partial proceeds from the autographs will go to that cause. Langley’s Andy Bhatti will be there at the signing as well. He is organizing a Men of Hope poker tournament being held April 6 at the Aldergrove Legion. My name is Brad Janishewski and I am a professional race car driver.
In December of 2010 I had a major heart failure and had only 14% of my heart capacity and was given a short time to live. I was introduced to Strauss heart drops and now I’m back to a normal heart. Thanks to Strauss I’m back to doing what I love to do. See you at the races.

Stem Cell Activator
Helps to activate naturally millions of stem cells from our own bone marrow. The increase in stem cells released from the bone marrow into the blood stream have the potential to become other types of tissue cells with specialized function. Stem cells will multiply and are able to become heart cells, liver cells or any other organ. Located everywhere in our body, stem cells are even under our skin layered between the epidermis and dermis. This is why an increase in stem cells under our skin may help to create a more youthful cell that would replenish elastin and collagen and thus may make us look younger. If our bone marrow does not produce enough stem cells this can result in many illnesses, especially a weak heart, kidneys, liver, pancreas, in fact all healthy functions of our body are decreased. Sufficient stem cells in our body have a great potential of selfrepair and the ability to rejuvenate tissues. It does not contain live human stem cells as these can only be transplanted by surgery and are subject to immuno-suppressant drugs to avoid graft rejection. Naturopathic Doctor summarized his experience in writing after using this Stem #63 Cell Activator: Used for all organ and tissue damage, heart attack damage, osteo-arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, traumatic brain injury, muscular dystrophy, Crohn’s disease, diabetes, lupus, spinal injuries, and other diseases and tissue damage. The results have been very satisfactory to us and to the patients and the time varies with different patients depending on the extremity of the damage. Women witnessing the effects of Bell Stem Cell Activator: <Women looking for anti-aging help! We all want to slow down aging. After using a bottle of Bell Stem Cell Activator #63 my skin seemed smoother and brighter. My hair looked healthier. It seems to have a cleansing effect. I’m delighted. Leona McCormick, 50, Clgary, AB < All around healing effect! The first thing I noticed after starting Bell Stem Cell Activator #63 was that my skin feels firmer and stronger. My friends commented that my skin looks more vibrant. My doctor at my yearly physical told me that my blood pressure is significantly lower. Many good things are happening. Spartans finish third, face Wesmen in quarters A momentum-changing dunk from Denny McDonald launched the Trinity Western Spartans on a 14-0 run which helped them seize control against the Fraser Valley Cascades. The Cascades were up 59-54 early in the fourth quarter but McDonald’s dunk changed momentum as the Spartans won 74-61 on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre in the Canada West men’s basketball regular season finale. The win improved Trinity Western to 12-10 and gave them third spot in the Pacific Division while Fraser Valley, which had beat the Spartans 69-58 in Abbotsford the night before, finishes at 10-12 and in fourth spot. “I think we worked hard all year and we challenged our guys to play four quarters this year,” said Spartans coach Scott Allen. “I’m not sure if we we did exactly that tonight, but in the fourth quarter, we played well.” Mark Perrin was one of four TWU players in double figures, with 17 points. Tristan Smith, playing in his final home game, had 16 points, while McDonald had 14 and Tyler Lintell added 13. McDonald also grabbed 11 rebounds, while Smith had six assists versus just one turnover. The Spartans travel to Winnipeg for a Canada West best-of-three
quarter-final playoff series this weekend. “It’s a brand new season,” Allen said. “We have a hard road ahead of ourselves, with travel and playing in a foreign gym. It’ll be tough but I like our chances with how the guys are playing right now.” Trinity Western has won seven of its past eight games. ••••• The Trinity Western Spartans dropped a pair of Canada West conference tilts to close the season against the Fraser Valley Cascades. The Spartans lost 77-66 in Abbotsford on Friday and 84-76 on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre in women’s basketball action. Trinity Western finished in sixth place in the Pacific Division with a 7-15 record. One bright spot for the Spartans this season was the play of Holly Strom, who set a host of new program records — single-season points, rebounds and blocks — as well as finishing as the top scorer in Canada West with 19.2 points per game. “Honestly, it’s hard for me to answer what went well this season,” Strom said. “I just wanted to have fun playing this year. It was still hard, but I just wanted to play for the team and enjoy the season.”
