Polar Bear Dip raises thousands by Treena Mielke Black Press

Fre-e-zing - Jody Hinshaw (left) and Julie Saby from Sylvan Lake were among the 41 participants in the Polar Bear Dip held in Sylvan Lake Feb. 16. The weather was unseasonably warm and a good crowd showed up to watch the fun. The ladies were taking part to raise funds for Community Partners. A total of $24,346.50 was raised for 12 organizations through the dip. Treena Mielke Photo

The polar bear dip might not be a big thing for bears, but for humans, even though the cause is a good one, and it might be fun, exhilarating and exciting, mostly it’s just cold. Really, really cold. For 20-year-old Julie Saby the shock of her body hitting the frigid water of Sylvan Lake, water that is usually buried under a thick layer of ice, is like getting a needle. The pain is sharp, intense, and quick. And then it’s over. “It’s so fast,” said Saby. “The time leading up to it is the worst thing.” Saby participated in the polar dip with her friend, Jody Hinshaw. The ladies wore borrowed bathing costumes from the ’20s. Saby, who also participated in the dip in 2011, came home from Edmonton where she is a third-year biology student at the University of Alberta to take part in this year’s jump. “It’s definitely an adrenalin rush” she said. “And it’s for a good cause.” Jody Hinshaw has participated in the polar bear dip three times. This year, she said she especially loved her ’20s style bathing suit. Continued on page 9

Winterfest provides weekend of entertainment by Treena Mielke Black Press

The winterfest, held last weekend, gave Sylvan Lake a chance to prove it truly is a town for all seasons. And the event, which featured a variety

of indoor and outdoor activities, including the ever popular polar bear dip and the first ever 24-hour skating marathon, did just that. The above average temperatures may have contributed to the size of the crowd that gathered on the frozen lake to watch more than 40 brave souls leap into the icy

waters, and in the process, raise thousands of dollars for local charities. Sylvan Lake resident Grace Baxter, was part of the crowd who stood on the sidelines cheering as the polar dip participants braved the elements. “You have to appreciate the people jumping in,” she said. “The vast majority of us are

too chicken to do it.” The skating marathon, another test of endurance, attracted 17 skaters and a great many volunteers, some of whom kept skaters supplied with food and warm drinks during a long, cold night and onto the next day. Continued on page 7

Satisfying end to 24-hour speedskating marathon by Treena Mielke Black Press

Art Goelema admits to being physically and emotionally exhausted after organizing and competing in a 24-hour speedskating marathon held in Sylvan Lake last the weekend. “But it’s a very satisfying tired,” he said, Tuesday. “It’s awesome. We made history. And skating through the night, that was awesome.” The marathon included 17 skaters divided into three teams. During the marathon, which began at 2 p.m. Sunday and ended at 2 p.m. Monday, the skaters covered 606 kilometers. Teams skated for an hour, then took two hours off, then skated again until the marathon was completed. Goelema, who has participated in five marathons, said this one was the toughest.” “Your body gets so tired. You just want sleep,” he said. However, he said skating through the night was an incredible experience and he didn’t feel the cold.

Fred Van Den Linde, Sietze Sietsema, Kees Bottenberg, Lenny Van Aken, Rick Dykstra, Bernard Riddar and Hendrik Helmig were among the skaters who took part in the 24-hour speed skating marathon held on Sylvan Lake Feb. 16 and 17. TREENA MIELKE

“You don’t want it to end. Your body doesn’t get cold when you skate.” The marathon, which raised more than $10,000 for the Children’s Wish Foundation would not have been possible without the help of volunteers, said Goelema. “We had a huge amount of volunteers and they deserve a special thank you. And we also had many sponsors who gave of their equipment and food. I can’t say enough about all the people who helped us make this a success and helped us make history.” Goelema is also grateful to the Foothills Marathon Association and the Town of Sylvan Lake for their support. The annual Foothills Speedskating Marathon will begin Friday. Feb. 22 to 24 will be busy in Sylvan Lake with aces and tours going on throughout the weekend. New this year is the Kortebaan, a 160 metre sprint, which will take place at noon Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Lake access key for Lacombe County by Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News

Lacombe County is opposing plans by Red Deer County to close a road at the shoreline of a popular Sylvan Lake boat launch, which Red Deer County says is frequently misused and abused. Bylaw No. 2013/1 was given first reading by Red Deer County council on Jan. 15, and, if passed, would see the closure of Range Road 21 where it meets the Sylvan Lake shoreline near the Summer Village of Half Moon Bay. Red Deer County legislative services manager Nancy Lougheed, in a letter to Lacombe County commissioner Terry Hager, noted that the road, which leads directly into the lake, has been a popu-

lar site for launching boats in recent years, but lacks proper facilities such as garbage disposal, parking and washrooms. Red Deer County is looking at installing a barrier at the end of the road, which would allow access to the lake by foot only. But Lacombe County is against the proposed closure, and feels that the use of the site as a boat launch alleviates congestion at other public lake access points. “We’ve been really focusing our efforts on attempting to find additional access points onto Sylvan Lake and expanding the existing access points, and we just don’t see the closure of this particular location as benefiting that cause,” said Lacombe County manager of corporate services Tim Timmons.

Timmons added that Red Deer County’s concerns regarding the road were acknowledged by Lacombe County, which has previously experienced similar problems with other lake access points. Closing the Range Road 21 access point, however, he said would only compound Lacombe County’s lake access issues. “We respect their concerns, but in the overall interest of access to the lake, we would encourage them to maintain (the lake access point).” Lacombe County council at its Feb. 14 regular meeting approved a resolution to encourage Red Deer County to not approve the bylaw, and will have an elected official present at the bylaw’s public hearing on March 5.

smoking environment. Smokers and Big Tobacco are adapting to these restrictions and now e-cigarettes are making their way onto the market. E-cigarettes are small cigarette-shaped canisters that are used to stimulate the sensation of smoking. Batteries within the canisters heat up fluid-filled cartridges that then give off a vapour that resembles smoke. E-cigarettes containing nicotine are not yet legal in Canada and hundreds of commercial shipments of e-cigarettes have been seized at the border over the last few years. E-cigarettes might help those interested in quitting to ease their

addiction, or it could perpetuate the addiction of smokers who now have a less obtrusive way to smoke in public. We’ll soon found out for sure whether governments and antismokers are truly concerned about nicotine addiction, secondary health hazards or tax revenue. Black Press editor George Brown grew up in a non-smoking home and made the lifestyle choice decades ago to enjoy premium cigars. He is courteous when he smokes and willingly accommodates those who senses are offended. He is also willing to share a cigar with fellow cigar enthusiasts.

Who says print media is on the way out? In my opinion at least, newspapers continue to play a vital role in communication and, for that matter, lack of communication. As every couple who has been married for longer than a minute knows, there is nothing quite like putting up the newspaper in front of your face to buffer any unwelcome comments such as “about that VISA bill,” or “how could you forget one or all of the following: birthday, anniversary or Johnny’s soccer game? Even a laptop doesn’t work quite as well as hiding behind a newspaper. Despite rumors to the contrary, young men and women, wearing enthusiasm, vitality and optimism like shields to protect them from real life daggers that seem to pierce all of us at one

time or another, still are choosing journalism as a career. And they are ready and willing to do the work: cover meetings, take pictures and bring back stories. In short, they want to report the news, and the questions of who, what, why, where and how are as relevant today as they were yesterday. But, and I will be the first to admit this, the steps to doing all of the above has taken a drastic leap from the way it was then to the way it is now. Years ago, when I was young and still cutting my teeth in the reporting business with a Pentax 1000 camera, and a darkroom and hunched over a light table learning to cut and paste, I befriended an old gentleman

Treena Mielke On the other side

who had been a newspaper guy forever. He fit the stereotype. He was grouchy. He was old. And, not so much for those reasons, but because he was a part of a world that held a fascination for me, a stay at home mom who had little experience in the media other than the ability to string sentences together, I liked him. And so he would tell me about the days of hot lead and the printing press and then he would recite some Robert Service poetry just in case my interest waned. And I would listen and absorb every word and think

he was very cool, but old. Today, that role was reversed. I was sitting in the the new reporter’s office, chatting the way reporters do after deadlines have been met and the newspaper, for better or worse, is on the street. For some reason, I don’t know why, the conversation drifted around to ‘back in the day.’ And before I knew it I found myself telling him my story. “I had an old camera, a Pentax 1000 when I started,” I reminisced. “There was no zoom, everything was manual. It worked for me,” I mused, almost forgetting he was there. “And, the darkroom. Of course, we had to do everything, you know. We had to

roll our own film, develop the negatives, make the prints. And then we had to get everything to fit on the pages on these huge light tables. It was all cut and paste in those days, you know.” He nods politely and suddenly I am reminded of how old I really am. “Things have changed, that is for sure,” I mutter as I go back to my own computer which should, but doesn’t, make reporting, easier. But it is comforting to know that no matter how much the steps have changed, some things never have and never will. Deadlines. The importance of accuracy. And the words, “is the paper here yet?” It’s the same today as it was yesterday. And that is good!

Brothers win at fishing derby by Treena Mielke Black Press

Blue skies, thick ice on Sylvan Lake and unseasonably warm temperatures were great lures for youngsters to try their luck at a fishing derby held last Saturday. Dave Lloyd from the Sylvan Lake and District Fish and Game Association said 50 youngsters participated in the association’s annual youth fishing derby.

“It was a pretty good turnout,” he said. “We had excellent weather and the kids all had a good time.” During the derby, held on the west side of Norglenwold, four fish were caught. First place went to Wade Brown, who managed to snag a 12-pound pike and second place went to his 14-year-old brother Cole who caught a 3.5 lb pike. Eleven-year-old Adam Davis and 15-year-old Michael Davis each caught 1.5 lb. walleye.

As well as the polar dip, and the marathon, the winterfest included a youth ice fishing derby sponsored by Sylvan Lake and District Fish & Game Association, and sleigh rides sponsored by Sylvan Lake Rotary Club. A kid zone at the lake sponsored by Sylvan Lake Youth Services kept youngsters busy and happy for a few hours in the afternoon and Sylvan Lake Scouts popcorn sales also proved to be a popular venue. Winter crafts at the library, and Sylvan Lake Archives open house proved to be interesting and fun activities. Best Body Fitness was part of the action as well with their cardboard box races which prove popular every

year. Bowling and rock climbing and a barbecue by Lighthouse Christian Academy were also part of Saturday’s fun activities. A free indoor skate and a family day swim at the Aquatic Centre was a great way to round out the day. New to the winterfest this year was the Sylvan Lake and Area Early Childhood Development Coalition which provided healthy snacks and fun events for the entire family. Debbie Oostindie, project co-ordinator said she was pleased with the turnout for the event, held at Our Lady of the Rosary School. “It was good to see families come out and participate and, especially good to see young parents in our community so involved with their children.” Saturday’s events

were capped with a dazzling display of fireworks, a perfect ending to an action packed, fun filled day. Mayor Susan Samson said she was pleased with the way the community pitched in and helped make this year’s winterfest the success it turned out to be. “I loved it. Winterfest showed us that we can truly be an action packed community even in the middle of winter.”

GOD’S UNSEEN HAND

W

e all have moments in our lives when we know that God’s unseen hand was guiding us along. Whether it be missing a light that turned green just long enough to see a semi truck go through the red light the other way, or perhaps just seeing something work out in a way that you never would have thought. One of the things I have realized is that I do not see everything that God does. Sometimes God is at work in our lives and we might not even realize it. Something that is interesting is that the Bible says that God “sustains all things by his powerful word”. So every morning you wake up and the sun rises that morning. They can even tell you the exact minute that it will rise and the exact minute that it will set. He sustains every aspect of this world. Every Áower that blooms in this town He sustains, every bird in this town He feeds and provides for and cares for, but not just that, He also provides and cares for you. The entire world He sustains every aspect of it is in His hands and nothing is hidden from him. Not just that, but also our sun in our solar system, He causes it just to sit there at just the right spot so that we will have enough warmth and life. But not just that, also our galaxy, the milky way, it has 300 billion stars just like our sun.

“Our passion is His presence, Our commitment is His will, Our pursuit is His way.”

And our galaxy is just 1 in 100 billion galaxies, and each one of those has at least 100 billion stars in each of them. If you think about that, that is 100 billion galaxies, each with 100 billion stars. And God upholds the whole thing by his powerful word. That gives us just a glimpse into how great He truly is. And with that in mind, I like what Jesus says to us in Matthew 6… “Do not be worried about your life, as to what you will eat or what you will drink, nor for your body, as to what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? And who of you by being worried can add a single hour to his life? And why are you worried about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the Àeld grow, they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the Àeld, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you?” God bless you. Polar bear dip Continued from page 1 She said she found the water to be colder than ever this year, probably because of the warmer temperatures outside. “The water was pretty chilly,” she said with a laugh. “It’s a shock, the air goes out of your lungs. Actually, there is no experience like it.” The ladies both jumped to raise money for Community Partners. Chrystal Belanger, who has participated in the dip for six years, and was jumping for Community Partners and Ronald McDonald House Central Alberta said it is an amazing experience. “It wakes you up, that’s for sure,” she said. “And raising money for a good cause is an awesome feeling.” Belanger and Danae Hussey raised the most money through the dip, coming in with $8,311. This year’s polar bear dip raised $24,346.50 and 41 jumpers participated. The most money, $5779.75 was raised for Community Partners. Ronald McDonald House Central Alberta was second with $5,311 raised on its behalf. A total of $2,335 was raised for You Can Play, Too, $2,280 for Sylvan Lake Playground Society, $1,851 for KidSport Sylvan Lake. The Serenity Pet Shelter was the recipient of $1,580 and $1,225.75 was raised for Sylvan Lake Library. A total of $1,220.50 went to the Central Alberta Women’s Shelter and Sylvan Lake Victim Services netted $1,013.25. Other groups who received funding included Sylvan Lake Fire Department ($915), Sylvan Lake Junior Curling ($500) and United Way ($335).

After more than four decades of absence, the historic Benalto Train Station is set to make a return to the hamlet this spring. The train station was transformed into a private residence after being removed from Benalto in 1971, and is currently situated in Red Deer County. Its owners, Garett and Brenda Cupples, are now donating it back to Benalto, just in time for the hamlet’s centennial celebrations next year. “We couldn’t destroy or demolish it,” said the Cupples in a press release. “As an historic building, we are very pleased that it is going back to its roots.” Benalto Centennial Committee chair Dave More admitted to being astounded when he heard that the Cupples were offering the train station back to Benalto, and immediately got to work to find a place to put it. When he approached landowners Bill and Dale Speight to discuss the possibility of purchasing a green space in the heart

of Benalto, the Speights rejected the offer of money for the land, and instead offered the land as a donation. “Really, it’s quite astonishing,” said More. “How often do you ever hear of a piece of your history coming back? The generosity is just incredible.” The land on which the train station will sit will be renamed Centennial Station Park, and will act as a gathering area for the community. More and his wife Yvette Brideau, along with several other volunteers from the Centennial Committee and the Benalto Booster Club, are now working to raise money to fund the transportation of the train station from its current location back to Benalto. Doing so will cost approximately $40,000, and the Centennial Committee is actively seeking donations from people and businesses in Benalto and beyond to help cover that cost. “(The train station) is a sentinel of history and memories and communication and education for everybody, but we have to get it here,” said Brideau. “It was offered to us as an incredibly gracious and generous gesture, and we’re trying to do something about it. “There’s nothing to lose by asking for donations and help to make this a reality. There’s everything to lose if we don’t.” Donations have so far been received from several businesses as well and current and former residents of Benalto. The full amount required must be raised within the next several weeks in order for the move to take place. “It’s such a feel-good project, and I think a lot of people would like to be associated with it,” said More. “We couldn’t have dreamed of this in a million years.” The train station’s move has been scheduled for March 25 to 29. Donations to help fund the move can be made to the Benalto Booster Club Centennial Project, Box 135, Benalto, Alberta, T0M 0H0. Admirals’ pursuit of success continues Submitted

After a long wait, the Sylvan Lake Admirals were anxious to get back in action and were visiting the Bentley Generals, in Red Deer on this past Family Day Monday for Game 1 of the AAA Senior Mens Alberta Provincial Semi Finals. The Admiral staff have been working hard in the background, doing last minute recruiting and trying to get the team prepared for a hard series. The first period was hard fought and the Admirals were battling hard and keeping in the game. Bentley had 3 power play opportunities totaling 5 minutes in the first period and 2 late penalties at the end of the first gave the Generals 1 minute of 5 on 3 to start the second and another minute of 5 on 4. Having battled the Generals to a 0-0 draw in the first the Admirals crew had dug a hole for

themselves, with a little help from some one sided refereeing. The Bentley crew took little time in the second period to build a 2-0 lead, scoring on the 5 on 3 then converting the 5 on 4. Barely a minute and a half later the referee made a weak call on another Admiral and the Generals made it 3-0. The wind was noticeably taken from the sails of the Admirals crew and the intensity was gone from the game allowing Bentley to take control and score twice more before the period ended. With one minute left in the second period another call on an Admirals defensemen was compounded by the chatter from an obviously frustrated player and a second minor was assessed, for a 4 minute total on the play. Not even the Bentley faithful could believe that the Admirals could be assessed 8 straight penalties over 2 periods without a single call against the Generals. At the end of the second it was 5-0 Bentley.

The third period saw the Admirals take a step forward and play like they are capable of and action was end to end. At 12:07 the generals got their first penalty called but an Admiral went at the same time. At 10:00 even the Generals took another penalty but 26 seconds later the Admirals were given a minor for roughing, so goodbye power play. The Generals were again called for a minor at 8:12 which gave the Admirals just over a minute in power play time but they werenít able to muster a goal. At 4:09 the Generals were called for roughing but the resulting scrum had coincidental minors assessed and again with 6 seconds to go coincidental minors were given. The Generals rounded out their scoring with 1:36 to go when a shot from behind the net banked off the Admirals goaltender and found itís way into the net. Final score 6-0 Bentley.

Itís always easy to blame a referee for the loss but Bentley was full marks for the win but a far better and more entertaining game was missed because of the volume of penalties assessed that interfered with two teams who just wanted to play hockey. The game was not out of hand or getting out of hand so it was perplexing to many in attendance, to understand the rationale behind the calls. For a full 48 minutes, only one team was penalized, without a single incident having been called against the opponent. Over all Bentley enjoyed 16 minutes of 5 on 4 and 1 minute of 5 on 3 power play time spread over 9 actual man advantages and the Admirals had one minute and 48 seconds of 5 on 4 power play time over 2 actual man advantages. “It was frustrating” commented Coach / GM Jason Stephens, after the game. “We wanted to make a game of it and set a tone to the play but you can’t do that

sitting in the penalty box and playing short handed. The Generals are a solid team capable of putting the puck in the net without the power play advantage and twice as dangerous with the man advantage. They proved that again today and we need to play smarter and use our speed if we want to even the series Friday at home. I thought our guys played well in the first and third periods but all the penalties leading up to and in the second, shifted the momentum to Bentley and they took full advantage.” Game 2 of the best of 7 series goes Friday Feb 22nd in Sylvan Lake at the MultiPlex. Puck drops 8:30PM. Game 3 is Saturday Feb. 23rd in Bentley 7PM start, game 4 is Friday March 1st in Sylvan Lake 8:30PM start. If necessary game 5 is March 2nd in Bentley 7PM, game 6 March 8th in Sylvan Lake 8:30PM start and game 7 is March 9th in Bentley 7PM.

Hundreds benefit from volunteer Nicaragua trip by Stuart Fullarton Sylvan Lake News

Sylvan Lake pharmacist Chantal Goyan is back in Sylvan Lake after spending an extremely busy and productive two weeks in Nicaragua. With a group of

She described the trip as an eye-opening experience, and is proud to have helped the many people who attended the clinics. “We went to four different villages, and the dentists treated 320 patients, extracted 769 teeth, and did 72 fill-

dentists and travellers with organizations Kindness in Action and Change for Children, Goyan helped put on a number of dental clinics, and, along with several members of her family, dedicated a school they helped fund.

Citizens - C.P. Blakely School on Feb. 15 celebrated its January Citizens of the Month. The theme for the month was determination. Back row: Hannah Myles, Damon Larson, Jaden Violet, Skye Russell, Wyatt. Middle row: Taiha Morton, Nicole Trudel, Jenna Miller. Front row: Sam Abel, Travis Lorenz, Chase Raes, Jasper Lewis. ings,” she said, adding that some people walked as far as 15 miles through the rainforest seeking dental treatment. The clinics were held in the Bosawás Biosphere — a remote area of northern Nicaragua requiring hours of travel by truck and boat to reach. “There’s no access, and in two of the villages we went to, there weren’t even stores. Even if we give them toothbrushes, they can’t buy toothpaste. “If they want to go buy things, they have to ride in the boat for four hours.” Goyan found herself in a variety of roles throughout the twoweek trip. Her tasks included everything from directly assisting the dentists with their work, to dispensing pain medications. One of the highlights, she said, was being able to visit a school in the village of Walakitang that she and her family helped fund. During the trip, they dedicated it to the memory of Goyan’s late mother and sister.

kids travel as far as four to five hours just to get there.” Goyan said high schools in the area are scarce, and that many children do not continue their education beyond Grade 6. Doing so is possible only by travelling more than nine hours by boat. Despite being away for just two weeks, Goyan is still adjusting to life back in Canada, and appreciates having the luxuries that many take for granted. “It’s a bit of a shock, because you go from having to shower with buckets and having no running water or electricity. “My kids are never hungry and have access to medical and dental care by just phoning the clinic and going there. It’s just a bit of an adjustment.” Goyan said the trip was a major learning experience, and hopes to go on another similar trip in the next two or three years.
