Breaking down language barriers Black Press PORT HARDY— Adult immigrants and refugee newcomers in several North Vancouver Island communities are getting help communicating in their new homes through a partnership between North Island College and the federal and provincial governments. North Island College has launched the English Second

Language Settlement Assistance Program (ESLSAP), a program funded by the governments of Canada and B.C. The goal of this program is to provide English language tutoring support to adult immigrants and refugees in three communities: Port Alice, Port Hardy, and Port McNeill. This program is based on community partnerships between the College and not-

for-profit organizations and volunteer tutors. The local director of the program is Julia Falla Wood, herself a naturalized Canadian Citizen originally from Peru. Before settling on the North Island, Wood studied language and other subjects in Peru, France, Belgium and Canada. “My role as the ESL facilitator is to recruit and train volunteer tutors, and to seek out newcomers interested in learning North Island tutor Teresa Heare, left, works with Lourdes Lomelin of Mexico during an English as a second language session at Port Hardy’s Avalon Adventist Junior Academy. or improving their language skills,” said Wood. “I assess newcomers using the Canadian Language Benchmarks, and facilitate learner intake according to Ministry expectations.” Wood was selected in October 2012 by Douglas Campbell, Associate Regional Director of North Island College in Mount Waddington Region, and hit the ground running. Since October, 11 volunteer tutors have been trained, and on Jan. 7,

tutoring sessions began with 28 students in the three communities. “The variety of nationalities was a surprise for all of us,” said Wood. “There are 10 nationalities: Brazilian, Chilean, Chinese,

Czechoslovakian, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Mexican, Peruvian, and Russian. These tutoring sessions take place at North Island College, Community Centres, hotels, restaurants, and schools.”

The tutor training includes Ministrymandated core curriculum, an online pre-service training, and face-to-face training. The tutors’ work goes beyond simply helping the Cont. on Page 4

Fishing 2X14 Corner

Get off your duff for good health’s sake

with Don Daniels email: dond@campbellrivermirror.com We live in a fishing area that anglers can fish 12 months of the year on salt and freshwater. Local lakes can fish very well for Cutties and while most anglers will venture out on fair-weather days there are a handful that get out during the colder days. If you get to a lake try fishing ing from shore.

FISHING CORNER

Steelhead fishing is active this time of year the Quinsam,Salmon and Nimpkish rivers are fishable. The Gold River will see some anglers now through May. Anglers getting out on the salt are finding fishing has really slowed down in the past week. The locals are getting fish in the teens and the salmon are down deep. The Hump and Shelter Point are areas that fish are being caught. Ling, Halibut and bottom fish are closed. Prawning has been good in a number of areas and should continue to be good until the end of April. Watch for Prawning to be very good around Denman Island in April.

In my physiotherapy practice, I see many clients struggling with aches and pains associated with prolonged sitting and postural dysfunction. As if we need any more reason to get off our duffs, it now seems that prolonged sitting may lead to something more sinister that a crick in the neck. Research presented at the American Institute for Cancer Research annual conference suggests that sedentary behaviour is emerging as a risk factor for certain kinds of cancers. It seems that the longer you sit, the higher your risk regardless of your fitness level or how much exercise you do at other times of the day. This is particularly alarming as the average

recommendations to workplace health that physiotherapists have long been touting. These recommendations include: ■ Set a timer on your computer or watch to remind you every 60 minutes to step away from your desk to take a short walk, climb a flight of stairs, or engage in some postural correction exercises ■ If you are chairing a meeting expected to last longer than an hour, remember to schedule a standing/walking break ■ Use a wireless headset to allow you to stand and walk during phone calls rather than staying seated ■ If your workplace space allows for it, consider using a counter height surface

or a full-fledged standing desk for some of your tasks If you’re getting too much bumin-seat time, the Physiotherapists at Rehabilitation in Motion can help you butt out the sedentary habit. We are university-trained in exercise prescription— including cardiovascular, flexibility, posture, and strength forms of exercise. We’ll get you moving, no if’s and’s or—ahem—buts about it. Tutors act as links to the community

As we head into the final days Of February the days are starting to get longer and Spring is not far away. newcomers with the intricacies of the English language. They also acquaint learners with community resources and acts as a link to the community. Each tutor commits to at least six months

of participation in the program. While the tutors are trained through a core curriculum, the instruction they provide students, or “learners,” is not part of the North Island College curriculum. And, while some

tutoring sessions take place at the college’s Port Hardy campus, the tutors typically meet the learners in their own communities, in a workplace, school or community centre convenient to them. “I am sure that

many more learners will participate when they will realize that they can learn English for free, at their own pace and on their own schedule,” said Wood. “The program also offers volunteer tutors a rewarding experience helping others to

integrate into the community.” Anyone interested in learning or tutoring, please, call North Island College’s Mt. Waddington Campus at 250-949-7912, toll-free at 1-800715-0914, or email at: mweslsap@nic.bc.ca.

Monologues keep women’s dialogue going The Campbell River Women’s Centre will be bringing Tony award winning playwright and performer Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues to the Tidemark Theatre on March 8. “We’re in the midst of celebrating the Campbell River Women’s Centre’s 30th year and the play is part of that,” said Georgette Whitehead, executive director of the Vancouver Island North Women’s Resource Society which operates the Women’s Centre. Ninety per cent of the proceeds from ticket sales will go towards the local Women’s Centre which provides free walk-in crisis and support counselling and programs for poverty relief as well as an annual school supply drive for local schools. Whitehead is producing the play which will be performed by eight local women for the third time since 2005 in Campbell River. Half of them have no prior acting experience

but were drawn to the worthy cause behind the performance. The actresses – all volunteers as are the crew and director – have been rehearsing since mid-November, five days a week. Julie Rigby of Quadra Island has been acting since she was a child, but has found the Vagina Monologues to be a challenge. “I found it very challenging, especially the monologue, the Flood, which I do,” Rigby said. “I find it very sad and in rehearsal you have to go there so I feel like I’ve been carrying around this character with me for months. It’s tough and I know all the ladies here feel that too.” The play combines a bit of humour, sadness and emotion. The piece is based on the answers Ensler found by talking to women about their emotional and sexual experiences. None of the characters in the play have a name, but each tell their own story or monologue.

2X2

Director Margaret Keane said she was approached to direct Campbell River’s rendition and couldn’t turn down the opportunity. “I read the book in the mid-90s when it came out and I thought it would be an interesting play to do,” Keane said. “There’s lots of challenges in the staging and keeping the integrity and honesty of the piece while keeping it pleasing to the eye on stage.” Still Keane said she’s enjoyed every minute of it and is pleased to be working alongside stage manager Denise Darnell, a director with Shoreline Musical Theatre and Rivercity Players. Whitehead has been pleased with the outpouring of community support, from donations for props and costumes to the donated rehearsal space in the Campbell River Common. The Vagina Monologues takes the stage at the Tidemark Theatre on Friday, March 8 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $23

Question: What can be done for3x3.5 crooked front teeth? Answer: There are several ways to address crooked front teeth, but it

depends on the degree of crowding. Severe crowding is often best treated with orthodontics (braces) to straighten the teeth. Moderate to mild crowding can also be treated with Invisalign, which utilizes clear trays that are custom made and move teeth gradually and gently. This can be done at your family dental Dr. Joseph Schafermeyer office. Another way to change the appearance of teeth is with composites. These are tooth-coloured resin fillings that are bonded to repair decayed, chipped, fractured, or discoloured teeth. They can also be used to close spaces between teeth, make teeth look longer, or change the shape or colour of teeth. They usually last several years, depend on how much bonding was done and oral/biting habits. Other options include porcelain veneers and crowns. These are thin layers of porcelain that are placed and bonded to prepared teeth. They can be used in situations where one wishes to change the shape, colour, or overall appearance of his or her teeth. They are very lifelike and can last for many years with proper care. In order to find out which treatment would work best for you, please speak to your dentist, or call us for an exam or free Invisilign consultation.

Every Saturday, Greg receives a hot

meal from the many volunteers like Helen Brown, who has being volunteering her time since 2000. “I have been here longer than the building, she said. She has seen and helped many people over the years and is grateful that she is able to show compassion and care to those who need it the most. Greg is trying to find his way but is new to the Comox Valley. He said he is not

looking for handouts, he is looking for a hand up and guidance. “No one is listening, he said, saying homeless people need a place to call home. Greg prefers not to stay in a shelter, explaining he has had bad experiences in them. “It is safer to sleep on the streets, he said. Greg said that if he had an address, he would not only have a warm place but he
