Andre Ho
Age: 20 High school: H.J. Cambie Few stages are any bigger than the Olympics, and the fact Richmond’s Andre Ho qualified for the Games on his first attempt speaks volumes about his maturity and talent. Though he was the fifthranked men’s singles player in Canada last year, Ho realized before heading to London for the 2012 Summer Games that he’d be a major underdog. He would be facing not only the best players in the world but, in many instances, opponents with significantly more experience. His goal was to advance as far in the table tennis tournament as possible, but realistically simply to learn. Ho was introduced to table tennis by his dad Simpson, when the pair played the game recreationally at home. But when his parents (mom Amelia is the president of the B.C. Table Tennis Association) opened the Bridgeport Sports Club in 1998, his talent quickly came to the forefront. In 1999, he entered the national championships and won four gold medals at the under-10 age group. Ho then climbed quickly up the Canadian rankings and was the under-18 boys’ singles champion at the 2007 Canada

Badminton ace Andre Ho competed in the 2012 Olympics. Winter Games. A year later he won the North American title and was runner-up on the under-18 world junior circuit at the Canada junior open. He also gained valuable international experience playing in four world junior championships, but it wasn’t until early in 2012 that he won his first North American open honour, becoming the first men’s singles qualifier at the North American Olympic qualification tournament. As a result, he became the youngest Canadian table tennis athlete to compete in the men’s singles event in Olympic history.
Bre Teranishi
Inspiration? “I’m inspired by different things and people everyday, but overall I’m inspired to do the best I can at what it is I want to achieve.” Most proud of? “Being able to represent Canada in the biggest Games there is—London Olympics 2012.” Advice? “Talent alone will only get you to a certain point, but hard work can lead you to limitless potential.” What do you enjoy doing in your free time? “I like to be outdoors a lot. Watching movies is something I like to do.” —Don Fennell
makeup artist
Age: 29 High school: Steveston Makeup intrigued Bre Teranishi at an early age. Art and graphic design did too. So studying at Emily Carr University of Art and Design was a natural fit. There she earned a bachelor’s degree before studying design in Chicago. But life began tugging her down a slightly different road, and Teranishi’s canvas became people. With further training at Vancouver Film School, she began a career as a makeup artist and hair stylist, immediately finding work on film sets, photo shoots, weddings and fashion shows. Since then countless models, actors and others wanting to look their best have benefited from Teranishi’s artistry and easy-going nature. Born and raised in Richmond, Teranishi has been expanding her client base outside of Vancouver. In the future, she sees herself aligned with a makeup brand, working behind the scenes on bigger projects. For now she’s enjoying the many different personalities and long hours that come with the job as a freelance artist. Inspiration? “In makeup I usually look to industry legends such as Val Garland or Lucia Pieroni. To Bre Teranishi’s canvas is people. me they are masters of storytelling with their craft. people whose stories we think you will enjoy. This year’s list includes Olympians, an osteoarchaelogist, actors and even siblings—Samantha St Jacques and Patrick Taylor as well as Summer and Caleb Clarke.
Andrew Wade Age: 26 High school: Hugh McRoberts Andrew Wade has fingers in acting, stage managing, playwriting, science and even police work. Wade grew up in Richmond before heading to University of Victoria to complete a degrees in theatre and writing. He’s now back, working part-time at Science World while pursuing his true love of the arts. And the police work? He’s also an actor for police simulations at the Justice Institute. Last year a condensed version of his first full-length play, The Romantics, saw the stage for the first time at the IGNITE! Youth Arts Festival at the Cultch. The script previously earned him first place at the Vancouver Young Playwrights Competition. This year Wade was nominated for an Ovation Award for his acting. In 2013 he has already performed in two musicals, is rehearsing for another production and is preparing to take one of his own shows to four Fringe festivals across Canada this summer. Inspiration? “I get inspired by anyone who is eagerly and happily pursuing what excites them. With some, these are artistic visions of specific projects. With others, it is their relentless drive towards self-improvement. With others, it is their loyal commitment to family and friends.” Most proud of? “Times when I have been able to help people through emotional crisis points, either as a peer helper at UVic, or with my art. I wrote a play called Hullaboo, about an invisible friend being left behind. After a performance at UVic, a friend of mine came out of the theatre and bawled into my shoulder. Something in what I wrote was helping her confront and address issues she had had with leaving childhood and growing up. I was

But the ones that do can snowball for years to come. So my advice is to become an eager opportunist, confident that you can take on the world, and to go for all 15 of those opportunities.” —Matthew Hoekstra
Carter Popoff Age: 17. High school: Matthew McNair Carter Popoff’s rookie season in the ‘dub has been one of ups and downs. While he’d love for his team, the Vancouver Giants, to be in a playoff position instead of last in the Western Conference and at bottom of WHL overall with 34 points, he has personally put together a strong first year. In 54 games, he’s scored 11 goals and added eight assists and emerged as a go-to centre who is reliable at both ends of the ice. Popoff didn’t have to look far for inspiration. His dad was a hard-working hockey player who taught his boys the importance of a strong work ethic. Carter says no one demonstrates that more than his brother Turner, a defensive defenceman with the B.C. Hockey League’s Langley Rivermen, who at 18 is a year older than Carter. The pair briefly played together with the Richmond Sockeyes during the 2011-12 season before Turner moved up to play with the BCHL Alberni Valley Bulldogs. Carter, meanwhile, completed the season with the Sockeyes and was named the Pacific International Junior Hockey League rookie of the year. “I’ve never seen a person work so hard in order to make himself better,” Carter says of Turner. “(Now), I’ve made it a goal of mine to work as hard as him on and off the ice.” Inspiration? “NHL hockey players have always inspired me to pursue my goal of becoming a pro hockey player. Their dedication and passion for the game is something to strive for. Also, my parents put forth so much time and effort into accommodating my every desire, which has added great inspiration to me.” Most proud of? “Making the Vancouver Giants this year. Growing up, I would always

Everything is easier if you do that. Also, put in the time to become a better player, on and off the ice. And always remember the game doesn’t control you, you control the game.” —Don Fennell

Emily Schmid Age: 29 High School: H.J. Cambie
Emily Schmid found her calling by recognizing and pursuing her passion without ignoring her morals. The fashion industry has taken a toll on the environment—and people—so Schmid found it important to lend her skills to an ethical and sustainable company. Earning a bachelor of design degree in fashion and technology from Kwantlen Polytechnic University in 2011, Schmid now works as a colourist at Mountain Equipment Co-op. Her final project at Kwantlen reflects her values—it comprised an eco-friendly fashion line that utilized fabrics from thrift stores. Born on the Sunshine Coast and raised on a farm, Schmid has lived in Richmond for the past two decades, and still calls the Island City her home. Schmid is also a volunteer with the Chill Foundation, which teaches at-risk and under-served youth how to snowboard—while instilling important life

lessons of patience, persistence, responsibility, courage, respect and pride. Future plans call for travel, starting a family and continuing to grow her career. Inspiration? “My family and friends are a huge inspiration to me. They have and continue to teach me so much. In the fashion world, Charles James has been my inspiration for as long as I can remember. He ignored all the industry and social norms and followed his passion. His designs are an incredible mix of structure, art and fashion which took years to design and make.” Most proud of? “Pushing through life’s challenges with a positive attitude. Age: 17 High School: Richmond Secondary David Wang has a dream—that all children with disabilities be treated fairly and equally, worldwide. A Grade 12 student, Wang has made it his mission to make that dream a reality, founding the SDC Blue Ribbon Foundation in 2010. What started as a “ragtag group” has since blossomed into a youth-powered non-profit organiza-
tion with hundreds of team members throughout the Lower Mainland. Its acronym stands for Support Diversity in Children. Fluent in English and Mandarin, the Ottawaborn and Richmond-raised Wang established the foundation after visiting a school in China for children with disabilities, where living conditions were poor. The foundation aims to raise awareness to support children with disabilities across the globe.
Among the foundation’s local efforts: after school programs run in co-ordination with Richmond Centre for Disability. After a session last fall, a participant urged Wang to offer more music therapy classes. He told Wang it was the only time he was happy and felt such comfort. Inspiration? “My brother inspires me the most in my life. Even though he was born with disabilities that restrict him from the same opportunities I am given,

As I handed each and every one of the 140 children with pens, chalk, and other stationary, each child looked up with joy in their eyes and delight and yelled out, ‘Thank you.’The principal of the school then told me that these children have never smiled so much in a day and they really enjoyed life.” Advice? “Advice I have for others is to not give up on any dream you have and don’t underestimate yourself.” —Matthew Hoekstra

David Cohen actor Age: 19 High School: R.A. McMath In his younger years, David Cohen saw his older brother (Andrew Cohen) on stage. He’d point and say, “I wanna do that! So today, at 19, he is. Cohen, raised in Richmond and still a resident, is an aspiring film actor now studying at University of B.C. Local audiences last saw him on stage at Gateway Theatre in December, playing the role of Mendel in the musical Fiddler on the Roof. Cohen trained in musical theatre with Perry Ehrlich’s Gotta Sing! Gotta Dance! program. He says theatre gives him a sense of fulfillment, and acting allows him to discover things about himself that he would have never known otherwise. Acting, he concludes, is a constant exploration of oneself and one’s
abilities. Inspiration? “I’m inspired by so many people in so many ways, whether it’s the the best filmmakers or theatre-makers in the world, or my big brother and sister, for inspiration, perseverance, or education and guidance. Most proud of? “The one that sticks out is my involvement with the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. As a kid, I was the young French narrator for the official logo reveal. Finally, at the Closing Ceremony of the Olympics, I was one of a handful of people selected to sing the Canadian National Anthem at the ceremony (and on the CD version as well). It’s as if I was there as the Olympic process started and as it ended. Advice? “The arts is a marvelous thing. Whether it be painting,

Erin Berkyto’s parents had long urged her to find a career that really interested her. So, while pursuing her English degree, she was listening to a phonetics lecture, where she was introduced to the field of speech pathology. She looked into the field in depth, then volunteered at a stroke recovery branch in Vancouver, and worked with children with autism. It turned out to be a marriage of her interests, made in heaven. Today, armed with a masters of science degree from the University of B.C.’s school of audiology and speech science, she is the director of Chatham Speech and Language Services Inc, in Steveston. Berkyto is fascinated with the complexity of human communication and how the human anatomy interacts with brain signals. One in 10 B.C. residents have a speech language or hearing disorder, amounting to some 400,000 people. Speech-related issues can result at any age, and at any time, and it’s something one can be born with or acquire. Traumatic brain injuries or strokes can result in speech-related ailments, she said. “The complexity of speech and language is amazing,” she said. “This means that no two days at work are ever the same.” Inspiration? “My clients and their families are my inspiration. Communication disorders can impact every facet of life; work, relationships, academics, and many activities of daily living. They have a level of strength, courage, and perseverance in facing these challenges that many people will never know.” Most proud of? “I am most proud of my profession. Speech-language pathologists do amazing things and touch other people’s lives every day. There is nothing more satisfying in my job than

Gregory Pember Age: 25 High School: Vancouver College Playing the title role in Oliver! at Gateway Theatre as a 13-year-old, Gregory Pember had the courage to ask for more. And unlike the hungry orphan of the stage, more is exactly what Pember got. It was then that Pember, born and raised in Richmond, got hooked on performing. He played the role alongside Richmond’s Jayme Armstrong, and now, as fate would have it, the two are back on stage in Ontario in a production of Mary Poppins. Pember trained at Richmond Academy of Dance and earned his bachelor’s degree in musical theatre
from the Boston Conservatory in 2010. That’s when he moved to New York City—his home base for two years while performing throughout the U.S. He now calls Toronto home, and after Poppins, Pember will play Rolf in The Sound of Music. Where life takes him next is wherever his work in entertainment takes him— that while completing his yoga instructor training. Inspiration? “What I loved about my training at the Boston Conservatory was the program’s emphasis on developing our talents as triple threat performers: specializing in all three disciplines of musical theatre including acting, singing and dancing. This has allowed me to

play roles ranging from Rolf in The Sound of Music to the title role in Shakespeare’s Hamlet. It’s so important to be as versatile as possible
when maintaining a career as a theatre performer.” Most proud of? “I am proud that I am continuing to follow my passion, wher-
ever that may take me.” Advice? “Always come from a place of love. If you treat every opportunity as a chance to spread love
and healing energy, you will be handed everything that you need. It may not always be what you thought you wanted or
needed, but the universe is here to provide you what you really do need if you come from a place of love.” —Matthew Hoekstra

Age: 23 High School: Matthew McNair When Jordan Kipnes is studying about business at Simon Fraser University, applying what he’s learning isn’t months or years away. For the past five years, he’s been running his own franchise for Student Works Painting, and lessons he learns in the classroom have relevance virtually every day. That’s not something many of his classmates can say. Following in the footsteps of his father, Elliott, who runs Hot Wax deejaying service, Kipnes also caught the entrepreneurial bug early on. His work at Student Works Painting includes being responsible for advertising, putting up lawn signs, scheduling neighbourhood marketing, making purchases and taking payments, among other things. Somehow, he finds time to hit the books in between classes and those daunting work responsibilities. A month ago, Kipnes’ parents went on vacation, and it was the first time he was completely responsible for bookings of music gigs, an experience he enjoyed. Inspiration? “My inspiration comes from my father, Elliott Kipnes. He started his DJ business, Hot Wax, in 1985 and has been able to grow it from a single operation, to one of the largest and most professional DJ companies in the city, employing over 10 staff and doing several hundred events annually.” Most proud of? “I am most proud of the student painting business that I have been able to create and manage over the past five years. I love being able to employ students and help them, as well as myself, get through school with as little debt as possible.” Advice? “Aim high. If you would have asked me what my summer job would have been prior to university I would have told you I’d still be working at a summer camp. Instead, I was fortunate enough to start this business, provide work for my friends, and do a great service to the community. “ —Martin van den Hemel

Matt Brevner
30 UNDER 30 Maggie Kong
musician
Age: 24 High School: New Westminster Secondary His time in the hip hop game has been short, but Matt Brevner is already making waves. Brevner is a producer and emcee with lyrical skill that continues to draw new fans to his music. Born in New Westminster, Brevner has called Steveston home for several years—a place he spent weekends with family growing up. In high school, a fine arts program exposed the budding poet to the world of recording. Fast forward to 2009, which marked the release of his debut hip-hop album. His songs were featured on local radio and TV—but he’s taken them farther. A long Japanese tour brought him new fans and notoriety. In Canada he toured with Bone Thugs-NHarmony and Moka Only. He’s also served as an opening act for major hip-hop acts. After a second album, his musical plot line thickened. Last year the emcee was featured prominently in the Madchild (of Swollen Members fame) song “Jitters”—a song whose 1900s-gangster-theme video netted over 200,000 YouTube views in the first week. Brevner is owner-operator of B-Sharp Productions, a music production house with two home studios. After three albums and much hard work to create his own success, it appears there’s plenty more to come.
Most proud of? “When my collaboration with Madchild was named in the top-10 music videos of the year on MuchMusic. Since I produced the song, and co-produced the video, it was rewarding to see something through from start to finish and have it be so well received.” Advice? “If you’re extremely motivated, it’s normal for people not to like you all the time. Don’t let it discourage you. Follow your heart, and not the general opinions of the group.” —Matthew Hoekstra
Natasha Jung
marketing specialist
Age: 25 High School: Matthew McNair Local teens with an interest in singing have likely heard of Natasha Jung. She’s not a teacher or voice coach, but for 10 years, she’s been behind the scenes of RichCity Idol—a popular annual singing competition for Richmond high school students. Jung co-founded the event and now serves as its executive producer. Many of the past 95 competitors have found success in the entertainment world, over 500 volunteers have experienced the production and over $25,000 has been raised for charity. For Jung, being able to make a difference in just one person’s life keeps her coming back for more. A Richmond resident since age three, Jung works as a marketing specialist at Deloitte Canada. She has a communication degree from SFU and a public relations certificate from BCIT. When Jung’s not working, she’s likely volunteering. She’s a Richmond Museum Society director, a mentor for Young Women in Business SFU and facilitates workshops on topics of leadership development, volunteerism, event planning and marketing. Inspiration? “My mom. A lot of what I have is because of her and she is living proof that you can go from nothing to something with hard work and perseverance. She’s such a force to be reckoned with and is the reason why I’m so driven.” Most proud of? “Richmond’s an outstanding community that I’m
proud to say I am a part of. There are so many great organizations and people that I’ve had the opportunity to work with that have enabled me to enable others.” Advice? “I live my life through the words of one of my favourite rap music artists, Jay-Z: “Treat my

From Page 8 “I didn’t know anything about finance and business,” Kong recalled about that first presentation in Grade 10. She was inspired by the passion shown by the presenters, and the information they brought. While studying at university, she also works at Coast Capital Savings Credit Union, and serves on the credit union’s young leaders council. A decade from now, Kong sees herself waking up every morning with passion and excitement about what the day will bring. But she’ll never forget those who made such an impact on her life, and hopes to serve the Richmond community as a volunteer in the future in much
the same way it has served her over the past two decades. Inspiration? “I am inspired by everyone around me, everyone I meet and their passions in life. It is so exciting to get to know someone and discover what makes their heart beat. Passion is infectious and gets me excited for life!” Most proud of? “I believe when people have a passion, it shows in all aspects of life. I’m humbled to be able to live out my passion to inspire a more financially literate generation of youths through Financial Literacy for Youth, an organization I’ve been involved with for five years, and at Coast Capital Savings, where I’ve been a happy employee for almost four years. It’s a joy to see my passions connect my education, work, community involvements and faith together to fit like a puzzle.” —Martin van den Hemel

Nattie Chan Age: 22 High School: Kitsilano Secondary It’s a woodwind double-reed instrument capable of making sweet melodies—and the beauty of the oboe isn’t lost on Nattie Chan. The Richmond oboist has found perfect pitch with the instrument, and has a bright future in music. Chan, born in Hong Kong, recently graduated with a bachelor’s degree in music (oboe performance) from Ohio’s Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and is now eyeing a master’s degree or jumping into a professional career with an orchestra. Today she plays with the University of B.C. and Vancouver Academy of Music symphony orchestras, and is a member of the newly-formed group: the Fireside Woodwind Quintet. She also has a business selling professionally handcrafted oboe reeds, and outside of music, works as a racquet stringer. Music, she says, allows her to express feelings and emotions without words. It also gives her opportunities to travel and meet amazing people who inspire her. Inspiration? “My first major musical influence is Alex Klein, who won a Grammy award with his recording of the Strauss Oboe Concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. His recording of the Vivaldi Oboe Concertos is the first oboe CD that I owned. I felt in love with his lush tone and was in awe of his brilliant ornamentation and interpretation. Any musician can translate black notes into audible melodies, but it takes an artist to transform the sound into something worthy for the soul.”

Oboist Nattie Chan plays with the University of B.C. and Vancouver Academy of Music symphony orchestra. Most proud of? “Having the opportunity to commission new pieces for oboe and taikos (at Oberlin Conservatory)… In my senior recital, I premiered two chamber pieces—one for oboe, piccolo and taiko ensemble, and a trio for oboe, piano and taikos. I was very lucky to have the support of my oboe professor Robert Walters, and the audience absolutely loved it.” Advice? “No matter how busy you are, always remember to eat proper, sleep proper, and most importantly, take a day off. Your body, mind and spirit will appreciate the gift and perform better in the long run.” —Matthew Hoekstra
Patrick Taylor Age: 26 High school: R.A. McMath Hitting the books and listening to lengthy lectures to learn about the sciences was hardly inspirational for Patrick Taylor, and it reflected in his grades. But as soon as his university classes shifted towards more laboratory works, he found his calling, and his academic performance suddenly soared. Today, he’s 18 months in to a two-year masters program in microbiology and immunology at the University of B.C., and his thesis project is studying a deadly bacteria with wide-ranging tools for fighting off antibiotics. Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium commonly found in soil, fresh water and sea water, is one of the prevalent pathogens found in hospitals, and can cause deadly consequences for those who are immuno-compromised, have cystic fibrosis, or suffer from burn wounds. He is studying the genetics of the bacterium, and the poorlyunderstood mechanism behind its ability to

Nicolaas Dekker swimmer
Age: 17. High school: R.A. McMath Nicolaas Dekker is a man of few words. He lets his action speak for him. A fierce competitor, he doesn’t take losing lightly. And fortunately that’s not often. Dekker is one of Canada’s emerging pool powers, a young swimmer with tons of potential but already armed with an impressive resume. Last year, at the North American Challenge Cup in Edmonton, the Richmond Rapids swimmer won three gold medals—100-metre butterfly, 200-metre butterfly and four-by-100-metre medley relay. He added a silver medal at the age-group nationals and also participated in the 2012 Olymic trails. That followed a stellar showing at the short course AAA provincial championships where he won four gold medals, three silver medals and a bronze medal. While his individual achievements are significant, the fact Dekker is even prouder of helping his relay team win gold at the age-group nationals in 2011, shows how much he appreciates the support of his teammates. “None of these achievements would have been possible without the support of the Richmond Rapids Swim Club and my amazing teammates,” he said. Inspiration? “Aside from my coach, my inspiration comes from within. I love to race, but I hate losing. A lot.” Most proud of? “When our (Richmond Rapids’) relay team (Brandon

Robin Eder-Warren opera Age: 21 High school: University Hill (Vancouver) Robin Eder-Warren fell into opera almost by accident. A “monstrous” Grade 5 crush took her to Gateway Theatre—where her crush was heading to a summer musical theatre camp. There she met teacher Heidi Muendel, with whom she continued to study music. At some point, the Richmond resident realized it was opera she was singing, and she didn’t want to stop. Today, she’s the co-founder of Opera Mariposa, a new company that offers young artists stage experience. After graduating high school, she studied opera at University of Manitoba and honed her craft in Europe and Canada. Eder-Warren has since shared her soprano voice and passion for opera with local audiences, along with those around the world. A past recipient of Richmond Music Festival’s Most Promising Performer Award Eder-Warren is also a committed actor, who has experience with stage, film and TV. She’s already passing her knowledge on to others, teaching voice from a private studio in Richmond.
Eder-Warren has her sights set on an opera career in Europe while developing another passion: yoga. She’s a trained hatha yoga instructor with a goal of continuing her studies as a yogi in Mexico. Inspiration? “My best friend, coconspirator and Opera Mariposa’s artistic director Jacqueline Ko inspires me every day. She lives with the often debilitating effects of chronic fatigue syndrome… Despite the challenges that life presents her in every moment of every day, Jacqueline is not only dedicated to Opera Mariposa, but is also a fantastic singer and performer. All the while, she has balanced her health and her passion for keeping our opera company alive from behind the scenes, as well as onstage.” Most proud of? “I am proud of the hard work and dedication it took to not only get this small opera company off the ground, but to keep it going and set up our next season, too. It took a team of incredibly talented dreamers, from front of house helpers to our fabulous cast, to make it happen, and none of it would have happened without all of us coming together.”

Samantha St Jacques equestrian Age: 29. High school: Steveston Secondary Samantha St Jacques (nee Taylor) grew up with a love for horses. While still in her formative years, she achieved her “A” level in pony club and was a very successful young rider— placing fifth at the North American junior championships in 2003, when she also named to the Canadian Eventing Team Long List with Oslek. She is a member of the Canadian Pony Club Hall of Fame as an “A” graduate and Canadian team member. Four years later, in 2007, St Jacques and her horse Livewire were named alternates for the Pan American Games and that fall went on to be the highest-placing Canadians at the Wit’s End World Cup qualifier and placed 10th at the Fairhill in Elkton, Maryland. In 2008, the pair was name to the Canadian Olympic team and competed in eventing at the Beijing Summer Games. St Jacques and her husband Pierre, who was a member of the gold medal-winning U.S. Dressage Team at the 2003 Pan American Games, continue to compete in dressage and three-day eventing while also operating a training and sales business in the Lehigh Valley on Pennsylvania. Their 20-month-old son also keeps the couple busy. “Spare time is rare, but I really enjoy running and currently training to run my first half marathon this spring,” said Samantha St Jacques, who also continues to train horses with the hopes of competing on the Canadian equestrian team again in the future. St Jacques also coached the 2012 national show jumping champion at Pony Club Championships, where her student won all six category classes and well as being the overall champion. Inspiration? “My husband, my son, my parents, and my horses.” Most proud of? “That I was able to represent Canada, and my family, on an international stage at the Olympic Games.” Advice? “Smile, and smile often. It makes you and everyone around you feel good.”

She took up piano at age 6 and added saxophone while still in elementary school. Nowadays, she plays alto, tenor and baritone sax, still sings and also plays guitar. She sings and plays baritone sax in a nine-piece funk/soul/Motown dance band called The Phonix, which is the house band for two clubs: The Backstage Lounge (on Granville Island) and at The Two Lions in North Vancouver. She has performed at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival, where she met and/or performed with the likes of Joe Lovano, Roy Hargrove, Herbie Hancock, Joshua Redman, Medeski, Martin & Wood, and Christian McBride. She even opened for Dave Brubeck. She also performs Brazilian music. She graduated from Capilano University 2011 with a bachelors degree in Music in Jazz Studies with a minor in Education and keeps active as a performer, arranger and composer. Check out her website at sandra-mae.com. How many compositions you’ve written? “I have written and arranged many instrumental jazz compositions. Recently I’ve been focusing more towards pop/R&B . I have many unfinished little gems that
Sandra-Mae Luykx is a musician and composer. are waiting to be fully fleshed out into thoughtful compositions that will be on my album slated to be released by the end of this year.” Inspiration? “One of my biggest inspirations is someone who inspires me both as a person and as a musician. Jeremy Hepner was my high school music teacher at McMath, and it was because of him that I actually pursued my love of music. He is also one of the best jazz and blues guitar play-
ers I know. His passion for music is shared with all of his students! Jeremy’s inspiration and his dedication to his students’ education were crucial to me pursuing jazz/music as a career. “Some other significant musical influences of mine are: Paul Desmond, Dexter Gordon, Hank Mobley, Ella Fitzgerald, Luis Armstrong, Etta James, Amy Winehouse, The Roots, Al Green, Stevie Wonder, Sharon Jones, Tom Jobim and Stan Getz, just to name a few!” Most proud of? “One of my greatest accomplishments was obtaining my degree from CapU. Now that I have persevered through that arduous process I feel empowered to commit to being a full time musician. It may be a tough haul in some people’s view, but there is something to be said about following your passion.” Advice? “Like studying anything, music is not easy and it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. The music industry is tough; you need to be fully dedicated and good at what you do, you need to be resourceful and you need to be street-smart. That being said, music is one of the few things that universally connects all of his here in this fast paced world we live in. It brings me so much joy to inspire people through my live performances as well as recorded works. There is nothing more satisfying than knowing that you have improved someone’s mood with your art.” —Bhreandáin Clugston

Jordan was very helpful throughout the process, and he was very patient in helping me pick out the color. His team arrived on the agreed time and worked diligently until the work was completed. Their work areas were kept clean and tidy. Jordan is a reliable young entrepreneur who runs his painting business well. I have no hesitation in referring him or working with him again.” ~Lily Cheng

Sahar Biniaz actor/model Shane Dagan restaurateur Age: 27 High school: R.C. Palmer Sahar Biniaz is Canadian pageant royalty. But the road to becoming Miss Universe Canada wasn’t easy. Biniaz experienced bullying in high school, and today—anti-bullying day in B.C.—is especially close to the Richmond woman’s heart. Bullying is one of the issues Biniaz has been speaking out on since winning the Miss Universe Canada crown last year in Toronto. Biniaz says she recently received a beautiful message from Carol Todd for bringing awareness to the issue. Carol Todd is the mother of Amanda Todd, a 15-year-old who took her own life last October after posting a YouTube video documenting cyberbullying. Born in India and raised in Iran, Biniaz came to Richmond at the age of 10. She studied performing arts at Stella Adler Academy in Los Angeles and is working as an actress in film and television. She’s now planning to further her acting education in New York City. In 2008 Biniaz also competed in the Miss Universe Canada pageant, finishing as first runner-up. But with persistence, she found the stage again—and won the title. She encourages young girls to have the same persistence. Inspiration? “I try to find one thing that inspires me everyday. It can be a person, a movie, nature or a simple thing as an old couple holding hands.” Most proud of? “I am most proud

I was fortunate to be able to buy my first home at the age of 23 and never ask my parents for financial help.” Advice? “My biggest advice to people would be to ask for what you want and be persistent until you attain what you want. It is amazing what you are able to get by just asking.” —Matthew Hoekstra
Age: 29 High school: Hugh Boyd How many 29-year-olds can say they’re still on their first job? Shane Dagan is among them, and he couldn’t be happier. From bus boy to owner at Steveston Seafood House, Dagan credits his parents and good timing as a big part of his successful story. Dagan started clearing tables at the Moncton restaurant when he was 15, and then went on to become a waiter and then a bartender. He then went for six months to Australia, where he got a job as a waiter at a high end restaurant. And it was there where he realized the restaurant industry, its positive people and energy, were for him. So when the previous owner decided to sell the place, Dagan, then 24, went to the bank for a six-figure loan. Fortunately his father, an accountant, and mother, who works at CIBC, both scrutinized his plan to ensure it was viable. “Every day is a new day, a new character coming in,” Dagan said. “I work 60 hours a week, but I don’t work a day, if you know what I mean.” Inspiration? “I guess it would have to be my parents. They raised three boys

(and we made sure there were plenty of challenges), work full time, are always helping us out with the restaurant and the baby and they still seem to have a ton of free social and travel time.” Most proud of? “I’m most proud of my new six-month-old baby, Anthony. Having a child definitely changes your perception of everything in life. He’s made the responsibility of the restaurant seem like a walk in the park and it only takes him one smile to make any challenges
from the day disappear.” Advice for others? “There are always a million reasons why something won’t work. Instead focus your efforts on the reasons why it will work and things will come together. The restaurant has also taught me that some of the best opportunities have arrived at what first seemed like a negative experience. If you can find a way to change every negative experience into a positive one, success is inevitable.” —Martin van den Hemel

“Conscious Capitalism” is not an oxymoron By: John Mackey and Raj Sisodia
Harvard Business Review
T
here is a growing network of people — including the leaders of companies such as the Container Store, Starbucks, Trader Joe’s, Patagonia and Whole Foods Market (of which one of us is the co-CEO) — building their companies based on the idea that business is about more than making a profit. It’s about higher purpose. We are a part of this group, and host a set of conferences each year to share the guiding principles and best business practices that we have come to call “conscious capitalism.” Every year, we come in contact with more leaders — perhaps like you — who share these beliefs. But one of the most predictable responses we get from people when we mention the idea of conscious capitalism is, “That’s an oxymoron!” It is undoubtedly an unusual juxtaposition of words. The word “conscious” has many connotations for people. We define it as being mindful and awake, seeing reality as it is rather than as we wish it to be, recognizing and being accountable for all the consequences of our actions, having a better sense of what is right and what is wrong, rejecting violence as a way to solve problems and being in harmony with nature. The word “capitalism” was coined by its harshest critic, Karl Marx, around 1850. The interest in and widespread confusion surrounding these ideas is evident from the fact that the most searched word of 2012 on Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary was “capitalism,” followed by “socialism.” Type “define capitalism” into Google’s search box and one of the first entries is “An economic and political system in which a country’s trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit.” That is a value-laden definition — especially the words “controlled” and “for profit.”
Tuesday, March 12
“Conscious businesses have trusting, authentic, innovative and caring cultures that make working there a source of both personal growth and professional fulfillment.” We think of capitalism in simple and benign terms: it is simply the co-existence of free markets and free people, or economic and political freedom. Unique among all the species on this planet, we human beings are wired to create value and trade with each other. This is in our very nature. The evidence is overwhelming that whenever in history humans have enjoyed unencumbered freedom to do just that, we have prospered, our numbers have grown, and we have lived longer, happier and more peaceful lives. When our natural urges to interact and trade freely with others have been suppressed, we have regressed. See Matt Ridley’s terrific book The Rational Optimist for oodles of historical evidence of this. Consider what has happened in just the past 200 years or so, a time when capitalism really took root as an idea in many societies. After tens of millennia in which 85-90 per cent of human beings lived on less than a dollar a day in today’s terms, worldwide per capita incomes have increased nearly fifteenfold in constant dollars. Today, about 16 per cent of the world’s population lives on less than a dollar a day. Adjusting for quality and affordability, it is estimated that the average American is 100 times better off today than 200 years ago. Average life expectancy has climbed from about 30 to over 67 years in that time span, and human population has risen from one billion in 1820 to over seven billion today. That is astounding progress, not just for a fortunate few but for most of humanity. We therefore hold these truths to be self-evident: business is

good because it creates value, it is ethical because it is based on voluntary exchange, it is noble because it can elevate our existence and it is heroic because it lifts people out of poverty and creates prosperity. Free enterprise capitalism is the most powerful system for social cooperation and human progress ever conceived. It is one of the most compelling ideas we humans have ever had. But we can aspire to even more. “Conscious Capitalism” is a way of thinking about capitalism and business that better reflects where we are in the human journey, the state of our world today, and the innate potential of business to make a positive impact on the world. Conscious businesses are galvanized by higher purposes that serve, align and integrate the interests of all their major stakeholders. Their higher state of consciousness makes visible to them the interdependencies that exist across all stakeholders, allowing them to discover and harvest synergies from situations that otherwise seem replete with tradeoffs. They have conscious leaders who are driven by service to the company’s purpose, to all the people the business touches and to the planet
we all share. Conscious businesses have trusting, authentic, innovative and caring cultures that make working there a source of both personal growth and professional fulfillment. They endeavour to create financial, intellectual, social, cultural, emotional, spiritual, physical and ecological wealth for all their stakeholders. Evidence is mounting that such businesses significantly outperform traditional businesses in financial terms, while also creating many other forms of well-being. Ultimately conscious businesses create lasting value as the world evolves to even greater levels of prosperity, helping billions of people flourish and lead lives infused with passion, purpose, love and creativity — a world of freedom, harmony, prosperity and compassion. Tips to keep your workplace safe By Stacey Friedman, VP

n British Columbia, all employers, regardless of their size, are required by law to provide a safe working environment. They must ensure that all employees are properly trained and supervised; they must work with employees to identify hazards in the workplace and ensure that hazards are eliminated, isolated or minimized. Every workplace in BC must provide a first aid program and supplies, first aid training for responders, and accessible first aid kits. A workplace is defined as anywhere your employer requires you to be as part of your job, whether on-site or off-site. This includes places such as the lunchroom, the parking lot, any motor vehicle you drive as part of work, and any equipment you use such as a forklift, ladder or step stool. Your vehicle is also a workplace as you drive from site to site. Employers and employees are required to set goals around health and safety and then work together to achieve them. Everyone has a part to play in improving health and safety in the workplace. All workers in British Columbia have 4 basic Occupational

Shayla Kaplen student, athlete Age: 18 High school: Steveston-London Shayla Kaplen is seldom bored. She simply doesn’t have the time for it. “I look forward to catching up on my sleep (however),” she said. Besides hanging out with friends and shopping, when she’s not attending classes or studying to maintain her place on the principal’s honour roll, Kaplen is also a multi-sport athlete who excels in many of them. A member, and surehanded first baseman for the Richmond Islanders 95A girls’ fastball team (which in 2010 was recognized as the team of the year at the annual Richmond Sports Awards, presented by The Richmond Review along with Richmond Sports Council and the City of Richmond), she was selected to play for B.C. at the 2012 Under-18 Women’s National Softball Tournament in Montreal last year. She plans to continue to play softball next year at the University of B.C. where she plans to study health sciences. Kaplen is also a talented soccer player, who helped her Richmond team win the provincial championship at the
under-16 Gold Division girls’ soccer in 2010, and competes in both basketball and tennis for her high school and has earned MVP awards in both. Away from the field and classroom, Kaplen also demonstrates a keen sense for community. She played an active role in a school philanthropy project, with the end result being a presentation of community-raised funds to the Make-AWish Foundation. Inspiration? “I have been privileged to work with several wonderful coaches who have helped to inspire me to reach my full potential. Each has taught me what it means to be dedicated to a team, how to set and reach goals for myself, and how especially important it is to be coachable and a good team player. I have also been inspired by some great teammates who play hard for each other, not one ever wanting to let each other down. I am also extremely lucky to have a close family that support me in all that I do. Both of my parents and two older brothers are excellent role models, who take an active role in my life and are always there to support me. I know they are my biggest fans.”

Most proud of? “I have discovered a way to balance a very busy life filled with all sort of activities that I enjoy. I have a love for many different sports, and had been lucky to have had success playing several of them at a high level. I am also proud of the high academic standing I have been able to maintain.” Advice? “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from playing the game. There have been times when I doubted my capabilities, but am
learning to have the confidence to believe in myself and my ability to work hard to get where I want to be.” If stranded on a desert island, what book would you want by your side? “My alltime favourite book is Dr. Seuss’ Oh, the Places You’ll Go. Believe it or not, this book has a lot of great insights into the ups and downs that we will all face in our lifelong journey. The main message is not just to wait for things to come your way, but
to make opportunities happen for yourself and then take advantage of them. I am also intrigued by the idea of serendipity—a pleasant surprise. When you are fortunate to meet many people as a result of a busy life, something good can easily happen even though you weren’t specifically expecting it. My favourite line the book is, ‘Step with care and great tact and remember that life’s a great balancing act.’” —Don Fennell

Tara Williamson dancer Age: 25 High school: Matthew McNair As Tara Williamson describes it, she’s always had a passion for dance. She started at age three at Richmond Arts Centre with teacher Melanie Pudlas, who eventually pointed her toward Richmond Academy of Dance. Her dedication to training was rewarded in 2005, when Alberta Ballet came calling. She’s still with the professional company today, and has danced title roles in Romeo and Juliet, Carmen and Cinderella. Born and raised in Richmond, Williamson now calls Calgary home but visits her family in Richmond—including her brother who has Down syndrome—as much as possible. The demands of a professional ballet company are great—physically and mentally. There’s training, rehearsals, choreography to learn, improvements to make, movements to master and strength training. She finds the time to teach ballet part-time and has also mentored young dancers with Alberta Ballet’s summer intensive program. Inspiration? “The people close to me really inspire me. I like taking the amazing traits I find through my friends and family and using that as inspiration. My little brother inspires me.” Most proud of? “I am most proud of my title role in Romeo and Juliet. I felt I really connected with the character as well as worked so hard to achieve quality in my movement. Actually, the first time I rehearsed the death scene in the studio, I cried. It was so incredibly emotional, and I was so into me being Juliet, I believed it myself, that I was about to kill myself for love. As I lifted the dagger to ‘kill’ myself, I started balling my eyes out and couldn’t stop.” Advice? “My advice for others would be to have passion in your life and to have something to work towards. I believe success is not measured by how much you have, but

Summer Clarke soccer Age: 17 High school: R.C. Palmer Being coached by your dad isn’t something a lot of kids welcome. But Summer Clarke embraced it. “It can be tough sometimes because if there’s something you need to work on, you hear it at home as well as at the park,” she said. “But he’s taught me everything I know about soccer and overall he’s one of the best coaches I’ve had. For me, being a forward, he’s been really good at teaching me how to make certain runs and how to handle the ball effectively.” Having just accepted a full four-year scholarship to Louisiana State University, Clarke is the latest in an athletic family to suit up for Canada. Her older brother Caleb is currently the top scorer with the Canadian men’s team at the under-20 CONCACAF qualifying tournament in Mexico. Summer shows similar natural goal-scoring instincts and led Canada’s under-17 squad with a club-record seven goals at last year’s CONCACAF women’s under-17 champion-
Summer Clarke played for Canada’s under-17 soccer squad. ship in Guatemala and at the World Cup last summer in Azerbaijan. Though she helped lead her club team, Richmond Red Hot Selects to five straight metro championships from U14 to U18, Summer didn’t expect to become such a prominent player at the national and international level. At least not so soon after failing to make the under-15 squad.
Victoria Groff Age: 19 High school: Richmond High Victoria Groff spends a lot of time thinking of others. She’s always looking for new ways or opportunities to help out and to make her community a better place. And recently concluding she’s got a little extra time to spare—even though her schedule is already chock full—she’s hoping to joining more volunteer groups. Groff is a full-time student in the process of completing her dream of being a trauma nurse. But while working toward that goal, she volunteers as an online facilitator for the Looking Glass Foundation which offers support for people suffering with eating disorders. Groff is also a talented athlete, who is an avid soccer player and with the help of her coachdad, organized a local women’s team (Richmond Chaos) that is currently in the midst of challenging for a metro league cup title. She is a defender and goalkeeper with the team. Groff also plays for and volunteers with the Richmond Girls Softball Association. Whether it’s suiting up for her team, picking up bottles, working in the concession or singing the national anthem, she’s always willing to step up to bat. Inspiration? “My dad inspires me every day. He works so hard at everything, and is a part of so many associations, yet still has time to be an amazing dad. He’s taught me so many lessons in life and is always there—like when I leave my cleats at home. He inspires me to achieve the goals I set for myself, and to be the best that I can be.” Most proud of? “Giving back to my community. Recently I gave scholarship advice to a local Richmond softball team because most of the girls

“I think scoring goals is a lot about technique,” she said. “You need to know how to shoot to score goals and from a young age I was kind of good at it.” She also credits Caleb for helping her take the next step. “He has had a big influence on how I’ve played,” she said. “He’s always been one step ahead and I’ve always looked up to him. It’s cool to be able to have someone you’re close to like that.” Despite her success, Clarke is determined to maintain an even keel. She tries to approach every game the same, whether she’s playing for Canada or a local team. Inspiration? “My family and friends inspire me to do the beset I can in whatever I take part in.” Most proud of? “My achievements in soccer as well as in academics.” Advice? “My advice to anyone who is trying to achieve a goal would be to work hard, and don’t give up even if things get a little tough along the way.” —Don Fennell

Since I pay for my education on my own, I understand how important scholarships and bursaries can be when it comes to school.” Advice:? “Always keep your head up. If you have the right kind of determination and mindset anything is possible.” What historic figure would you most like to meet? “Terry Fox. He has always been a hero in my eyes, with a determination and strong will to strive for whatever he wanted to achieve. He’s an inspiration as an athlete, cancer research activist and a fellow Canadian. I feel like he could tell me what his secret was; how he stayed so on track with his dream and never backed down.” —Don Fennell
Caleb Clarke soccer
Age: 19 High school: R.C. Palmer Like his younger sister Summer, almost two years his junior, Caleb Clarke is a goal scorer. And like Summer, he’s demonstrated that special ability at the international level for Canada, which has been goal-starved in recent years. Clarke is currently in Pueblo, Mexico with the Canadian under-20 men’s team which is trying to qualify for the World Cup later this year in Turkey. He scored a pair of goals in a 5-1 win over Nicaragua earlier in the CONCACAF qualifying tournament, before coming down with Montezuma’s revenge. Clarke scored a team-high 26 goals last season with the Vancouver Whitecaps’ residency squad, which reached the final of the North American Academy Championships. He also impressed in his first taste of Major League Soccer with the Whitecaps’ senior squad. Clarke, who showed his natural goalscoring prowess early by leading Richmond Madrid to Metro league titles from U13 to U18, was also the leading goal-getter for the provincial squads from U13 to U15. Despite his youth, Clarke’s talent has also afforded him a pair of tryouts with teams overseas—loaned by the Whitecaps to Erfurt of Germany last season. In 2009, he trained with Udinese Calcio in Italy.
Caleb Clarke has a knack for filling the net. Clarke believes his goal-scoring ability is God-given, but credits his dad Clive for everything else he needs to be an elite player. “He’s always been there, helping me improve my fitness and skills,” he said. —Don Fennell
