SPCA has a cat problem But spay and neuter program is alleviating over-population WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

Cats, not dogs, need to be controlled with a spay and neuter program, Alberni SPCA Branch Manager Irene Towell said. The Port Alberni SPCA has administered the A-B-C Spay and Neuter program for dogs and cats for the last 10 years. The program tamped down what was beginning to be a dog and cat over-population problem, Towell said. “When you have to transfer 300 cats with no homes out in a year that speaks volumes about a pet population problem,” Towell said. “We don’t have the same problem with dogs because they don’t breed as fast.” Although the program is for both dogs and cats, Towell is targeting cats. In 2012, the Port Alberni SPCA accepted 700 cats, Towell said. The number is down from 1,300 it accepted five years ago. “We’re seeing the numbers come down but we’ve still got an overpopulation of cats,” she said. “We need to continue to see the numbers come down.” The program is easy to access, even for pet owners who live on a

low income. Owners make an appointment for their pets at the SPCA facility. Pets are usually dropped off in the morning then picked up in the afternoon. The procedure will vary depending on the animal’s age and if it has had a litter before, Towell said. Recovery is quick and pets

are usually going about being pets within a day or two. It’s not just animals that have had an appointment made for them though that get the procedure. “No animal leaves the facility until it is fixed,” Towell said. The program is run by a combination of donations and grant funding and only runs when funds are available. Low income pet owners can access the program by providing proof of income and contributing $30 for the procedure. Running the program has been tough the last few years because of the downturn in the economy, Towell said. The SPCA also sees a spike in the pet population during tough economic times, Towell said. “A lot of people surrender their animals because they can’t afford the expense of them,” Towell said. Helping the community keep the pet population in check is as simple as A-B-C, Towell said. “The life expectancy of a feral cat is three years. The life expectancy of a domestic one is 12 years,” Towell said. “More animals die each year from homelessness than any other reason.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com

IIO investigates woman’s arrest WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

A special police unit from Surrey is in Port Alberni to investigate an incident involving a woman who suffered a broken kneecap after being arrested by RCMP. The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) confirmed via press release on Monday that it is investigating the matter. According to its website, the IIO is a civilian agency that conducts investigations into police related incidents of death or serious harm to determine whether or not an officer may have committed an offence. Incidents of serious harm include death, serious disfigurement and substantial mobility impairment. The incident happened on Feb. 15, said IIO official Owen Court. Two Port Alberni RCMP officers responded to a disturbance complaint involving an adult female,

who was found on the corner of Maitland Street and Eighth Avenue. Subsequent questioning by police determined that the woman was in violation of a court order and officers arrested her. The woman sustained injuries to her knee during the arrest. She was transported to RCMP lockup where she was tended to by BC Ambulance personnel. Court could not say what time police initially responded to the call or how long it was before police called paramedics to tend to the woman. The matter is under investigation therefore BC Ambulance can’t release details about the time the call came in, a spokesperson said. The woman was admitted to hospital where she was diagnosed with and treated for a fractured kneecap. RCMP and IIO officials monitored the woman’s condition and on Feb. 22 the IIO assumed responsibility for further investigation.

Catalyst Paper Corp. is hiring 50 more people this year and employees can expect to rise through the ranks faster than their predecessors. Catalyst president and chief executive officer Kevin Clarke made the announcement during a state-of-the union address to Port Alberni business leaders at the AV Multiplex on Tuesday. The average age of local mill employees is 52 and attrition is expected to increase over the next decade, Clarke said. Fifty more employees are required this year, and 15

Catalyst officials have had cursory discussions with North Island College and Vancouver Island University staffs about what they can do to help fill the growing need for employees, Clarke said. Clarke outlined other developments, including how the company has chiseled its $840 million debt down, and plan to lower it to $220 million this year, he said. The outlook for the paper industry is good. Catalyst continues to penetrate the market in China. And Latin America presents a potential large paper market because tablets and iPads aren’t used as commonly as they are in North America, Clarke said. A former Port Alberni resident involved in the fishing business is set to breathe new life into the city’s waterfront. The Port Alberni Port Authority has signed a lease with Victoria’s Independent Seafood Canada Corporation for use of PAPA’s No. 1 shed, company spokesperson Tracy Ronlund said. “There’s a good feeling and a good culture there. It’s familiar, and familiar is good,” said Ronlund, who was born and raised in Port Alberni. “And Port Alberni raises good fishermen.” The company took possession of the 9,000 square-foot shed in February. The facility will be used to offload 720,000 pounds of fish from the company’s trawler, as well as to store packing materials and vessel equipment. The 44-metre trawler Raw Spirit is enroute from Iceland where it underwent modifications to its processing facility,

Museum gets new manager

It will head out for its first catch at the end of March and will unload every 10 days afterward, Ronlund said. Ronlund credits business partner Kelly Anderson, who also owns a fishing vessel, with initiating the move. “He worked in Port Alberni for six months before he moved to Vancouver and his crews were always from Port. He’s a big promoter of the town,” Ronlund said. The move is a good investment and makes good business sense, she added. “If the vessel is based in Alberni then the crews will be more productive and it’s

Where there’s one fishing vessel there are others, city economic development officer Pat Deakin said. “We hope that once they re-locate that others will look to move their boats here,” Deakin said. “This could be the beginning of Port Alberni rebuilding the number of fishing vessels that operate out of here.”

The initiative is expected to generate 15 jobs on the vessel plus shore jobs and economic spinoffs, Deakin said. Lots of leg work was done in the two years it took to assemble the deal, Deakin said. Moorage issues had to be resolved. Procedures around unloading fish to trucks had to satisfy the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. A key element in the deal was the addition of the floating

breakwater to the waterfront. Ronlund is no stranger to Port Alberni or to fishing. She was born and raised in the Valley and graduated from Alberni District Secondary School in 1989. Her father, grandfather and uncle were all fishermen, she said. She worked as a deckhand with several of the familyowned vessels. Ronlund went to the University of Victoria after high school,

earning a commerce degree in 1995. She worked for a seafood broker then for Port Fish Seafoods, where she helped establish the company’s payroll, inventory and vendor accounts. Ronlund left Port Fish in 1996 and worked for Fisher Bay Seafoods in Victoria for 15 years. She and business partner Theresa Williams purchased the company in 2008. reporter@albernivalleynews.com

The city has hired a new manager for the Alberni Valley Museum, and he’s a familiar face. Jamie Morton will replace Jean McIntosh, who is retiring in March. Morton starts work in April. Morton is currently working at the Manitoba Museum in Winnipeg. He previously lived in Port Alberni, and was the chair of the Alberni Valley Heritage Commission. He also contributed to the museum’s centennial exhibit. Morton has a BA in archeology, as well as an MA and PhD in Canadian History.

Tidebrook smackdown

The owner of the burned out Tidebrook Hotel has been told to clean it up—or else. City planner Scott Smith told city council that a letter has been drafted to the owner, Jack Purdy, and his agent. The letter states that Purdy has until March 30 to respond to the city’s request to clean the property up. If he doesn’t clean it up then city staff will proceed with the next steps in the process. The building has been a charcoal hulk since being damaged by fire in January.

Four high school students are headed to China on their own dime. Leaving in May, the group is making stops in Shenzhen and Beijing on their trip. The group will be taking part in leadership workshops as well as volunteering. The city is providing the students with more than 100 City of Port Alberni pins to take on their trip.

City council has given the green light to a high school provincial election initiative. Council approved free busing for voters on election day (May 14). The request was made at the last city council meeting by the Alberni District Secondary School Civic Studies 11 class taught by Anne Ostwald. The initiative is meant to increase voter participation.

City council ponders position over coal WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

Port Alberni city council is taking its first steps in developing a position on shipping coal out of the Valley’s deep sea port. City councillors voted to meet with the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, Port Alberni Port Authority, and the Tseshaht and Hupacasath First Nations and discuss the proposed coal port. The motion also called for council to tour a coal mine operation in the North Island. “The City of Port Alberni cannot stop coal from coming if it is OK’d by regulatory bodies,” Coun. Jack McLeman said. “I’m not opposed to someone having a coal mine. But we may not like what we

get, so this is the last chance.” The Raven Underground Coal Mine would be located in the Comox Valley. The mine is projected to produce approximately 30 million tonnes of coal over 16 years. The product would be trucked to a facility at Port Alberni’s deep sea port where it would be loaded aboard a vessel and shipped abroad. The city has attended a lot of meetings and has pored over information but hasn’t taken a position one way or the other with the project, McLeman said. The city has interests in the issue despite its regulatory impotence. Coal will be shipped through city streets, creating wear and tear. The proposed shipping point is located near

a prime residential area, the value of which may be impacted. “We need to know what we can have a say in that we control,” McLeman said. “I want to have a discussion before it’s done to us. We may be told “no” but at least we tried.” Coun. Hira Chopra spoke against the motion, saying it was premature to take a stand when the city knows it has no power. “We need all the information first because we don’t know which way the wind will blow with this one,” Chopra said. Coun. Cindy Solda agreed, saying all sides need to be talked to first before any kind of position or stand was taken. Talking to other parties who have similar interests isn’t taking a stand and can’t hurt, Mayor John Douglas said.

who own homes in Port Alberni won’t be getting a break on their utility bills. City council voted 6-1 against a move that would see senior homeowners receive a five per cent discount. “If we do this then we have to give it to others too who can’t afford it. I don’t think it’s fair,” said Coun. Cindy Solda, who voted against it. “I want it too but it’s not happening right now.” The idea of a seniors’ reduction was posed in November. The proposed decrease would be to the fixed costs of water, sewer and garbage and not to the

consumption fee. The idea was put over to budget discussions, and was re-opened again by Coun. Hira Chopra. Residents are charged various rates for utilities. A flat rate is charged for water meters, and further charges are based on consumption. And a flat rate for sewer services is charged for residential dwellings, while other users are charged according to consumption. Council is making good on its pledge to discuss the matter, Chopra said. A seniors’ discount would be a good draw for seniors

considering making the Valley their home. Council is forever “whining, screaming and fussing” about raising taxes “and you’re the biggest yeller,” Coun. Jack McLeman said to Chopra. McLeman said he would entertain discussion about a reduction based on income levels to include others who need it. Council is trying to trim the budget down to what residents can live with, Coun. Dan Washington said. “If we trim five per cent it’s just going to come back and bite us somewhere else.”

Pater gets 10 months WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News

A repeat sex offender who committed one sex crime while awaiting sentencing for another will be spending the next while in jail. Judge R. Gould sentenced Shawn Pater, 33, to 10 months in prison for one count of sexual assault. Pater was also ordered to provide a sample of his DNA to the federal crime data bank. The incident

occurred on Dec. 23, provincial crown prosecutor Gordon Baines said. Pater invited a 16-year-old girl to his residence to wrap Christmas presents. When she arrived she found no one else there and was alone with Pater. The girl asked to be brought home but Pater said he wanted to shower first. He came out of the bathroom and exposed his genitals to her. Pater then grabbed the girl, pulled her shirt off and was trying to pull

her pants off when guests arrived. He threatened the girl, telling her to keep her mouth shut about what happened. Two days later the girl disclosed the incident to a friend, who brought her to RCMP. On Dec. 25, police went to a residence where Pater and his family gathered for Christmas dinner. They lured him away under the guise that there was an incident at his apartment and arrested him.

The overall health of the Alberni Valley is key to deterring negative outcomes like addiction and crime, health experts say. The solution is not only to provide supports to people already struggling with addictions, but to add an early intervention component, to prevent the lifestyle choices that lead many to addictions. There are structured programs and services to aid those in crisis here. Port Alberni has a homeless shelter, some transitional housing, emergency for women fleeing domestic violence, and a mental health and addictions program through VIHA. A number of nonprofit groups also help marginalized residents, including the Bread of Life Society, which offers

meals and access to some medical services. The KUU-US Crisis Line Society offers a 24-7 link to those in need of emotional support or crisis intervention. These supports are in place because they are needed and used to their full capacity. Some overall conclusions in Alberni’s profile highlight the fact certain illnesses and disabilities in adults are simply not conducive to having a steady income over time. Those with developmental disorders, such as a variety of mental illnesses (some of them genetically inherited) can often function fairly well in society, but not always at a level that is selfsupporting. The health of our residents is also driven by outside influences, ones we may not previously have associated with “health.” “Economic vitality is clearly a driver,” Vancouver Island Health Authority

– Paul Hasselback Central Island medical health officer Paul Hasselback said. “Those communities that, for whatever circumstances, find themselves successful [economically] tend to be healthier. Conversely, where the economy is challenged —and this is applicable for Alberni—we see more health challenges.” A key factor in success is the distribution of income. “Countries where there is an equitable distribution of resources tend to have fewer poor outcomes,” Hasselback explained. “We often look to the Scandinavian countries as an example. Equalization has a huge impact on the relative health of

individuals.” He noted the North American Occupy movement last year: the fact that one per cent of the population hold the vast majority of its wealth represents a disparity and inequitable distribution of income. These socioeconomic challenges tend to contribute to poor health outcomes in some populations, although many other drivers are also in play. “Communities ... have a duty and responsibility to their neighbours. There is an interrelationship: those that are well off have something to share. Those that are challenged also have something to share,” Hasselback said. But taking the issue down to what each individual can do to increase the odds of ensuring their own lives are healthy and long, there are some basics: Don’t smoke, limit alcohol intake and avoid illegal drug use, enjoy a healthy diet that includes fresh fruits and

Both met with some local board members to discuss the various activities of the society, its affiliation with Abbeyfield International, and plans for the future, which includes support for the development of new Abbeyfield houses in Canada. During her term as president, Power has travelled extensively in Canada and Europe, especially in Britain, where the Abbeyfield movement

One idea involves discussions on lobbying governments and the private sector for funding and sponsorship, as well as the creation of partnerships with other local and national organizations. Others include working closely with the native community; setting up national standards; promoting and marketing Abbeyfield at various local and regional levels by enhancing publicity of the societies in Canada through brochures and joint events such as Abbeyfield Canada

Power has already visited most Abbeyfield houses on her tour of Vancouver Island, which included Courtenay, Port Alberni, Duncan, Salt Spring Island, and the Victoria area.

Gwen Fletcher, who is also a board member of Abbeyfield Canada, former member of the British Columbia Trust Society and past chair of the BC Abbeyfield Chapter, has a vast experience working in the health care system as a director of nursing and executive hospital director. Currently, she is working on national standards for all the Canadian Abbeyfield homes. “Liz (Elizabeth Power) has reorganized the structure of the board at a national level by creating a strategic plan,” Fletcher said. “A president has to go around and visit the societies, and meet with the people in the field, and she has done that.”

Honourable move or not? He’s the Don Cherry of TV science John Duncan’s surprise resignation as minister of aboriginal affairs and northern development brings some answers — and questions. The prime minister issued a terse press release, saying Duncan had quit his cabinet post, would remain as Vancouver Island North MP and would be replaced as minister on an interim basis by James Moore. Duncan admitted he quit because he wrote an inappropriate letter to the Tax Court on behalf of a constituent. He violated the principle that separates elected officials from the judiciary. Duncan wrote the letter two years ago, but the JOHN DUNCAN federal cabinet apparently discovered it was improper only recently. At least that’s the Conservatives’ story, and they’re sticking to it. Intriguingly, Duncan is only the seventh federal cabinet minister to resign in the seven years Stephen Harper – notoriously reluctant to admit a mistake – has been PM. Duncan holds one of only two Tory seats on Vancouver Island, another reason why his resignation came as a surprise. The aboriginal affairs file has been stressful. As minister, Duncan has had to promote a Harper government agenda guaranteed to rile Canada’s native people. No matter what you think of Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence or how native bands spend government funding, Duncan’s confrontation with her was a public relations black eye for him. She became a focal point for the Idle No More movement that just won’t go away. Duncan did the honourable thing, but his poor communication skills counted against him under the unblinking glare of national media attention. — Comox Valley Record

ICTORIA – He has a white beard and a bully pulpit on CBC television, but he doesn’t use it to promote hockey fighting. Instead he sucker punches the oil and gas industry at every opportunity, with increasingly flagrant disregard for the rules of science. Public broadcasting referees keep their whistles in their pockets, wary of offending a legend. He’s David Suzuki, and he has evolved from geneticist to TV celebrity to his current role as the Don Cherry of Canadian science, an angry curmudgeon lashing out at his enemies. Earlier I wrote about Suzuki’s hit piece on the Alberta oil sands, featuring selective pollution studies and a celebrity turn by movie director James Cameron,

who toured the alleged carbon crime scene in his personal jet helicopter. Suzuki’s latest Scud missile of misinformation was launched Feb. 7 on The Nature of Things. It’s called Shattered Ground, and it borrows heavily from earlier shock docs that target hydraulic fracturing for shale oil and gas. While clearly aimed at the surging shale gas industry in B.C., this hour-long program offers little about B.C.’s long history of gas development. Suzuki’s voiceover refers briefly to B.C.’s Oil and Gas Commission, insinuating it was set up as a pet regulator protecting the industry from stricter oversight. Mostly the show focuses on places like Dish, Texas and Dimock, Pennsylvania. The Texas segment talks about traces of neurotoxins in residents’ blood samples, blaming

this on gas drilling and “fracking,” the new swear word of professional environmentalists. The evidence shows some people have these traces in their blood, but others don’t, which suggests that more likely sources are cigarettes or exposure to disinfectants. Pennsylvania and Colorado are key stops for the antifracking crowd. For centuries there have been places known for methane dissolved in groundwater, typically from shallow coal seams. This is where you can find a rustic fellow to shake a jug of well water and touch his Bic lighter to it, producing a brief blue flame. The standard sequence moves to a sink and faucet, where a more impressive methane fireball is generated. Suzuki’s voice-over

One bit of local content is a segment on frackinginduced earthquakes, presented with sombre alarm by Ben Parfitt, go-to researcher for the antiindustry left in B.C. These are detectable by sensitive instruments, as is the case with some mining and other industrial activities, but according to the Oil and Gas Commission, they don’t do any actual harm. Mailbag: Feedback on ports, popes and more. Coal’s not usual business To the Editor, There was an interesting moment at Monday’s council meeting regarding the proposed Raven Coal mine. Councillor Jack McLeman brought a motion to have discussions with the Port Authority, Tseshaht and Hupacasath First Nations, the ACRD and last but surely not least the public about the implications of Raven Coal using Port Alberni’s port to dump, store and ship about a million tonnes of coal per year. McLeman said that it was important to explore our possible positions in anticipation of Raven’s final response to the questions raised by the public and the CEAA Working Group. It was interesting that his motion carried; one must question Cindy Solda’s wanting to tour the Quinsam Coal Mine [in Campbell River] and Raven’s mine site once again. McLeman’s suggestion speaks to the need to understand that what is proposed is not business as usual at

the port as the whole valley will be affected. David Stern, Port Alberni

Retirees can’t afford big hike To the Editor, In support of all those who wrote and had letters published in your paper regarding the proposed tax hike. The majority of residents are retirees on fixed incomes and cannot afford our glorious city council and their money grabs. Are they aware of that Ontario city where the disgruntled taxpayers set up cameras to investigate city employees, and as a result more than a dozen hourly-paid employees were fired? This all with support of union and council. Paying once is bad enough, but not again and again. If you can’t fix something the first time, then when are you gonna get time to do it properly? J.A. Vatican adrift in unholiness To the Editor, Lying is a cloak children try hiding behind to escape the consequences of bad

behaviour. Blaming others becomes a shroud for selfrespect. The Vatican is an intellectual repository for mankind’s ongoing search for The Eternal. The Vatican is not the repository of Holiness. The Vatican has always been the ultimate seat of power for a secret society of old men. Some are more pious than others, some are more enlightened than others, and some are more ambitious than others. Too many of them are willing to judge others much more harshly than they outwardly judge themselves because they want to conceal their own moral weaknesses. Far too many of them are willing to participate in the concealment of immoral behaviour by trying to justify that their (cowardly) conduct will protect the Roman Catholic Church. Those who control any powerful institution must be held accountable to prevent the onset of rot and decay. Clinging to out-dated traditions has made the current scandal-

Preparing for the after-oil era To the Editor, In comparison with the world daily consumption of 90 million barrels of oil, the 100-million barrels reservoir recently discovered in eastern Quebec was described as “vast” but in fact, it’s insignificant. So are any new reservoirs representing a few days, months or years of world consumption. It’s time to prepare for the after-oil era. Fossil fuels gave an incredible boost to our civilization but their CO2 emissions have changed the world’s climates. Between 1980 and 2010, the number of climate disasters went from 50 to 250 per year. According to the documentary Chasing Ice, glaciers receded more in the last decade than in the previous century. The melting of pergelisol releases methane, another potent greenhouse gas.

We’re not even certain the situation can be stabilized. Is that the legacy we want to leave our children? If not, let’s abide by the principle that life should trump money. Our collective future should not be jeopardized because somebody paid for exploitation rights. As for jobs, they will also be created by the new technologies. Consider especially the algae fuels; they have the merit of absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere and rapidly yield great quantities of oils that can be treated in traditional refineries and be used in the present day cars, planes and industry. In parallel, subsidies to fossil fuels should be reduced. The alternatives will thus become competitive. The Stone Age didn’t end for a lack of stones. The age of fossil fuels shouldn’t end for lack of reserves, but because we will have mastered more sustainable ways to meet our energy demands. The visionary investor should understand that. Life Choices

Valentines Day has come and gone. Our ‘day of love’ has passed, and old fears and anxieties may again rise to the surface. In a letter to the early church, John says ‘There is no fear in love. Rather, perfect love casts out fear’. (1John 4:18) In a story I heard recently, “a grandfather tells his grandson how in every human heart two wolves dwell and are in constant conflict with each other until the day one dies. The little boy looks up and asks, ‘Grandfather, which wolf wins?’ Grandfather replies, ‘the one you feed!’” May we feed love, and starve fear!

Students at École des Grands-Cèdres in Port Alberni are hoping to raise $2,000 to build a well for a school in Tête Source, Haiti. The project began when teacher Céline Hamel searched for somewhere to donate old textbooks, games and other material that was outdated for the Port Alberni school, but would be good for another French-speaking school with limited resources. Hamel was

introduced to Pauline and Bazelais Danoit, whose children attend École Océane secondary school in Nanaimo. The Danoits in 2010 started a Haitian relief society and could get the school supplies to their destination. After learning the Danoits travel to Haiti every year to oversee improvements to École Tête Source, Hamel thought more could be done. “In my heart and in my mind, water is the most essential need,” Hamel said. The Bulldogs are coming off a great weekend that first saw the team sinking the Clippers in Nanaimo 7-1 last Friday only to follow-up with a 4-4 tie at home against the nationally-ranked Surrey Eagles. That game is being described by many as the most exciting game in all of the Canadian Junior Hockey League this season. “The Bulldogs encourage fans to come out this weekend, take part in the great Fan Appreciation Weekend activities, and keep the momentum rolling into playoffs,”

Midget teams head to B.C.s Port Alberni’s two midget rep hockey teams are headed to their respective provincial championships in March. Midget Tier 3 Van Isle Ford Midget Bulldogs won their round robin placement games against Tri-Port (6-5) and Juan de Fuca (8-1). They then defeated Sooke T3 5–1 on Saturday, Feb. 16 to advance to the Island T3 championships. Because the midget rep Bulldogs are hosting the B.C. championships they automatically get a berth in the provincials. The season is over for the Alberni District Secondary School Armada senior girls basketball team. The Armada went 0-2 at the AAA Island Girls Basketball Championships last weekend in Nanaimo. The team lost to eventual second place winner Claremont 78-48 on Friday before losing to Stelly’s in their final game on Saturday. “That’s it, we’re done. Finished for the season,” co-coach Greg Freethy said. The Armada lost more so than their competition won, Freethy said. “Our defense wasn’t at its best and we gave up a lot of points,” he said.

– Greg Freethy “And our rebounding wasn’t there so they were getting a lot of second and third chances and you just can’t do that.” The games were identical in one respect, that the Armada came within five points of catching up against both teams, Freethy said. “Once we recognized that the game was out of reach we deflated a bit,” he said. The team saw pressure, presses and traps but were ready and responded well, Freethy said. “We

just gave up too many points, especially on transitions,” he said. The game against Stelly’s was telling, Freethy said. “They were hot and couldn’t miss. They hit three three-pointers in a row once,” he said. “They were aggressive and rebounded well and we got no second chances.” The game was telling for another reason as well. Grade 12 players Tia Anderson and Darion Alaire fouled out; Nicole Irg left the game with a hamstring injury; and Chelsea McIntosh was out with a broken collarbone. “It was the last game of their high school careers,” Freethy said. “It was sad to see it end for them.” A bright spot was

The Alberni District Secondary School Armada senior boys basketball have docked their ship for the season. The Armada boys lost their challenge game to Victoria’s Spectrum Community School on Tuesday in Ladysmith. The Armada were down 24-2 after the first quarter but clawed back to within one point before losing 70-61 in the final. “We gave them the win in the first quarter and had nothing left in the tank when we came back,” head coach Neelan Parmar said. Last weekend, the Armada placed fourth at the AAA North Island Championships

in Cowichan. They lost 111-73 to Cowichan then 70-53 to GP Vanier 70-53. Cowichan placed first and Dover Bay second. The Armada’s fourth place finish bought them the challenge game against Spectrum, which placed fifth at the AAA South Island Championships. The North Islands was closer than the scores indicate, Parmar said. In the game against Vanier, Towhees guard Joaquin Paterna eluded the Armada’s defensive schemes, scoring 11 points including several three pointers and passing for several more. The Towhees successfully applied their own press defense forcing Armada turnovers

A big reason I love being a Chiropractor is because of the life lessons I learn from my practice members. And it gets no better than when I get to meet an everyday hero, someone who elevates the ordinary life by extraordinary action. I knew that Marg and Frank, both in their 70’s, were special the moment I met them. Marg came in to have her spine and nervous system assessed for subluxations. Her systems were slowing down and her strength decreasing as the dis-ease of Parkinson’s became disease and began to overcome her body’s resources. After a series of adjustments, her power was on and her strength improving. I was struck by how closely they interacted and moved together. As they entered and left the adjustment area, they were synchronized. Marg’s awkward gait was improved and she moved more confidently, with Frank lovingly as the guide and Marg in absolute trust. As Frank and I helped Marg move on the table, I chuckled at the inadequate help I give her from my professional training compared to the loving competency only the heart can provide as Frank effortlessly assisted her. They remind me of the story of a prominent scientist who quit his job to take care of his wife through the end stages of Alzheimer’s. When asked why he would end his career in his prime to take care of a woman who doesn’t even know who he is, he replied, “ She may not know who I am but I know who she is. “ Every day I get to do what I love. And every day I meet the quiet heroes. Marg and Frank will never find a cure for cancer, win a Nobel Peace prize or rescue anyone from a burning building. But the courteousness they express to each other and the courage and dignity in the relationship that they share sets a precedent that has a ripple effect on all of us and on all of life. It makes them everyday heroes.

A fixture in Port Alberni’s restaurant and catering scene is hanging up his smock this summer. Dave Timmons, 53, who owns Dave’s Catering, says he’s calling it a day this August. “I already own a couple of restaurants and I’m quite involved in the community so it’s time to let something go,” Timmons said. “My wife and I are going to spend some of our time travelling and then we’ll see.” Timmons, who also owns Smitty’s restaurant in Port Alberni, says he’ll continue to run the popular eatery as well as another he owns in Parksville. Timmons has come a long way, literally and figuratively, since his childhood on Canada’s east coast. He was born in New Waterford, Nova Scotia, in 1959, but his parents moved him and his five siblings to Newfoundland and Labrador three years later.

Timmons’ favourite subject in school was math and his favourite pastime was playing sports— soccer and basketball specifically. After high school Timmons attended St. Francis Xavier University where he was a striker for the mens soccer team. Timmons was as good a student as he was an athlete, and

It was the early 1980s when Timmons graduated from university. Canada’s economy was flatlined and there were few jobs for anyone, even someone with a business degree. Timmons’ first job after university was washing dishes at a Kentucky Fried

Chicken restaurant in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, he said. He also worked as an accountant at a large law firm there. Timmons later became the eatery’s manager, and it quickly became the busiest KFC around, he said. He also met his wife Jane, who worked at the restaurant.

Timmons left KFC and worked for Xerox, a move he said was an invaluable experience. “I went through training and seminars in Washington and Virginia. It was a good couple of years,” he said. Timmons was on the lookout for a good opportunity and one landed in his lap in 1988 when he bought Smitty’s in Port Alberni. “I worked a lot of long hours and long days so I figured if I was going to work that hard then I might as well work for myself,” he said. “I just put my head down and got to work when I got here and here we are.” Timmons was also a part-owner in the

Kingsway Hotel until he sold his interest. “My soccer buddies and I went there after games, it was our watering hole,” he said. “We got drunk one night and bought it.” The restaurant business would flatline sometimes so Timmons looked for a way to buttress his share in it. He saw another opportunity in catering events. He already had infrastructure and staff; and Dave’s Catering was born. Timmons catered small events such as post-funeral meals right up to large gatherings. His most memorable job was in Toquart Bay five years ago at a gathering of canoes. “It was for 700 people and we got word that the canoes were going to be five hours late,” Timmons said. “People ate in the dark of night and we had to collect our dishes out of the sand the next day. I can look back and laugh, but it sure wasn’t funny then.” Timmons gets so busy that he sometimes forgets to write a job on the calendar and has to scramble when a panicked client calls. Or, his staff arrive at a job only to find he wrote the wrong date. “You’ve got to be ready to go. Service is just as important as the food.” For a man who serves food to others Timmons has his own favourite meal, he said. “Prime rib and prawns. You just can’t go wrong with those.”

Art Club Designs New STARS Poster

By George This year Mrs. Elder’s, Mrs., Johnson’s, and Ms. Girard’s classes have baby salmon. The first stage in the life cycle of a salmon is the eggs. We got them when you could see their eyes and backbone in the eggs. They are now alevin, and after that they will become fry. We will release the salmon fry in April. Their full life cycle is egg, then alevin, then fry, then smolt, then adult, and finally spawner. The classes are having fun with the salmon.

Mr. Homan has been a principal for 8 years and this is Ms. Girard`s first year as a vice principal. When we asked them what their favorite part of Maquinna was, they both replied, ``the students!”

Mrs. Souther’s Art Club students have been hard at work designing a new poster to promote Maquinna STARS. This is our Code of Conduct. STARS stands for Safe, Teamwork, Achieve, Respect, and Share.

Grade 3 students in Mrs. Cruickshank’s class are learning to tell time. Annika, Mitchell, and Destiny say it’s easy to tell time if you practice a few tricks. The best trick to know is that a quarter of the clock equals 15 minutes and half of the clock equals 30 Minutes. According to these students, telling time is fun and important to learn so you won’t be late for school!

Kindergarten students have been reading storybooks staring Pete the Cat. Pete the Cat is a blue cat who has a good heart. The stories and songs teach the Kindergartens how to be kind and respectful to others. The children are learning to ‘not sweat the small stuff’ and to have a positive attitude.

Mrs. McAuley and Mrs. Sanders have started a First Nations Club at Maquinna. During lunch time, interested students meet in the library to learn about Nuuchah-nulth culture. They play games, learn language, create art, and listen to stories.

The Grade Fives have just started a program called D.A.R.E . The reason they started D.A.R.E is to learn about the harmful effects of drugs and how to make healthy choices. Constable Shelly is leading the program and has been teaching D.A.R.E for 2 years. The meaning of D.A.R.E is drug, abuse, resistance, education. Constable Shelly thinks D.A.R.E is important so that kids learn how dangerous drugs are and so they are able to make healthy living choices. Darren the D.A.R.E. mascot
