Louie receiving Community Achievement Award BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
TODAY'S WEATHER
Lower Kootenay Band Chief Jason Louie has become the first Creston Valley recipient of a BC Community Achievement Award. Louie is among 34 recipients who will receive the provincial recognition for 2013 at a ceremony at Government House in Victoria on March 14. Also to be honoured from the Kootenays is Tom Lymbery, longtime owner of Gray Creek Store.
“The community achievement awards honour individuals who have made a significant contribution either as volunteers or in the course of their work,” said Keith Mitchell, chair of the BCA Foundation, in announcing the 2013 recipients. “We’re privileged to showcase and celebrate the contributions of these exceptional British Columbians.” Louie, in his second year as LKB chief, said that the award was completely unexpected. “When I received the news I was going

to be awarded the BC Achievement Award I was and am surprised,” he said. “I am honoured and humbled by the award and will do my very best to represent not only the Lower Kootenay Band but also the Creston Valley.” Louie’s nomination was made by LKB chief operating officer Linda Berg, who wrote that he “has openly shared the culture, language and traditions (of the LKB) with anyone, and does it in an inviting and friendly way. “He has also taught new staff of Lower

Jason is passionate when he speaks about preserving the language and culture.” Two supporters of the nomination both have expressed hope they will be able to attend the March 14 presentation. Creston Mayor Ron Toyota and Regional District of Central Kootenay chair and Area B director John Kettle both work with Louie and his council on matters of importance to the Creston Valley. Rotary club preparing Town calls for RCMP drop to 47 per cent for annual auction BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff It’s a sure sign that spring is just around the corner when members of the Creston Rotary Club are out soliciting donations for the annual Rotary Radio and Internet Auction. “This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,” committee chair Scott Veitch said on Monday. “The success of our auction — April 17 this year — depends almost entirely on the generosity of the Creston Valley business community, and their support is nothing short of amazing, year after year.” The auction has a long history, dating back to more than 30 years ago when it was started to raise funds for minor hockey. Eventually, the event was turned over to the Creston Rotary Club and the net proceeds have been used in many local projects. “It doesn’t take much of an effort to find the Rotary wheel, our organization’s emblem, around town,” Veitch said. “That logo signifies a club project that has been accomplished
Louie award From page 1 “Chief Louie has demonstrated a genuine and strong desire to build an open community with the residents of the entire Creston Valley,” Toyota said. “Our council and staff continue to participate in Lower Kootenay Band functions like the powwow and general assembly, and their council and staff have participated in many town functions. “Chief Louie has been instrumental in opening the dialogue within his community and involving our town, the regional district, RCMP, local fire departments, Canadian and U.S. border services, and several local volunteer groups and organizations.”

with the support of our community.” Past projects completed with the help of auction funds include the Japanese garden in Millennium Park, the Lawrence Lavender Reading Garden at the Creston and District Public Library and the trails behind Millennium Park, which continue to be a major commitment as the system is expanded. “With our trails project we have partnered with the Town of Creston and the Creston Valley Rotary Club — it’s a big undertaking, one that will benefit people of all ages as they enjoy walking so close to downtown.” Last year marked the first time items have been auctioned on the Internet as well as on the radio (CIDO 97.7 FM) and Veitch said the online portion of the auction enables the event to grow, and to bring a whole new audience to the fundraiser. “If businesses haven’t been approached for donations, but would like to contribute, please give me a call at 250-428-9331,” he said.
Kettle said he has known Louie for 15 years and that he admires the perseverance and dedication to bettering the economic and social life of LKB members. “One of the most outstanding attributes of this gentleman is his dogmatic adherence to his history and to the traditions and language of his people,” Kettle said. “His respect for the wisdom and words of his elders and the ‘old ways’ have resulted, in my opinion, in a contiguous lineage by blending the old and the new while not losing the languages and traditions of his people. “In a day and age where everything is ‘high-tech, it is humbling to see people led by a young chief embracing the new paradigms while celebrating customs, tradition and language as a fundamental part of their existence.” Humility and receiving awards don’t always go
together well, Louie said. “It is difficult to speak of this honour as our Ktunaxa traditions dictate that we do not speak in a manner that may appear that of boasting. I came from humble beginnings and my mentors instilled ethics of hard work, dedication, and to always do the right thing even when no one is looking. “I will keep the past and present citizens of Yaqan Nukiy in my heart as I receive this award. Yaqan Nukiy, the Creston Valley and this great country have given me everything. I will continue to volunteer and contribute to the land that has given us clean water, roots, berries, medicines and wild game. “I thank those who nominated me and although a warrior should never bow his head I will do so when accepting the award to demonstrate I am humbled. I thank Yaqan Nukiy and the Creston Valley.”

A year into its provincial contract, it appears the Town of Creston was justified in negotiating its share of policing costs downward from the original offer. According to statistics released by RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan at the Feb. 12 council meeting, the Town of Creston was responsible for half of the calls for service (1,877 out of 3,727) in the 2011-2012 fiscal year. In the 2012-2013 fiscal year, files originating from within town limits dropped to 47 per cent of the RCMP workload (1,606 out of 3,341). Originally, the town was told it would have to foot the bill for eight of the detachment’s 13 members, but Mayor Ron Toyota and town manager Lou Varela flew to Vancouver and were able to negotiate a reduction to seven of 13 RCMP members’ costs. They were told at the time that such a result was virtually unprecedented. “We were told initially that we didn’t have much of a chance for a reduction, that the same data was used for all contracts with municipalities,” said Toyota. “But we did manage to negotiate to pay for one less police officer and only 1.5 support staff instead of the two proposed in our draft contract. I don’t think they had ever considered a 0.5 employee share before.” The contract for policing services also includes a share of the detachment’s occupancy costs and vehicles. The area west of Highway 21 and along Highway 3A provides the next largest demand for police services. In 2012-2013, the number of files originating from that area totaled 1,030. That area includes the Creston flats, West Creston and Highway 3 to Kootenay Pass. North of Creston, which runs through Wynndel all the way to Riondel, 321 calls for service were generated, while the area east of Creston, to Irishman Creek, resulted in 281 calls. Rounding out Gollan’s statistics are calls to Lower Kootenay (75) and the Rykerts and Kingsgate border crossings (28).
In making his presentation to both the local services committee (Regional District of Central Kootenay area A, B and C directors and the Town of Creston) and Creston town council, Gollan said he was working to organize the statistics to align as closely as possible with the RDCK defined areas as possible. He also said that the cost of holding prisoners is attributed to where the incident for which the prisoner was arrested took place. A West Creston resident arrested outside a pub in Creston, for instance, would result in a charge back to the town. The costs of a Creston resident arrested for assault in Yahk would be borne by the province. In order to be responsive to community needs and demands, Gollan said he and his colleagues regularly attend a variety of meetings so they are aware of social issues and concerns. “We are currently working with the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors and local banks to set up a fraud awareness program for seniors,” he said. “Also, we are working with the violence against women group to help co-ordinate a plan to address home situations which have high risk assessments.” “A higher police presence at public events like Blossom Festival, Starbelly Jam and Thunder Cat hockey games has also been a priority,” he said. A glance at the discrepancy in impaired driving charges between the 2011-2012 and 2012-2013 fiscal years (39 to 16) initially raised his concern, Gollan said. But during a large portion of the past year, a provincial court decision prevented police from using the roadside suspensions and vehicle impoundments that had dramatically decreased time used to take a case through the court system. The roadside actions are now back in place after the process was tweaked to address the legal concerns. Among his priorities for the coming year, Gollan said, are to continue keeping a close watch on prolific offenders and to target known drug dealers.

Week of RCMP calls starts with yelling match BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff
Creston RCMP responded to 50 calls for service from Feb. 18-24, Const. Dan Cameron said on Monday. February 18 •A yelling match, but no physical altercation, ensued when drivers stopped to air their grievances at the intersection of 33rd Street and Highway 3 in Erickson. One accused the other of tailgating and passing unsafely on a corner, then using an obscene hand gesture. •Creston RCMP assisted Kimberley police by obtaining a statement from a local resident about an assault case. •A metal trellis with attached garden gate was stolen from a yard in the 400 block of Canyon Street. February 19 •The first of a half-dozen untraceable 911 calls from cellphones was received. •A driver who backed into a pickup truck on private property on Williams Road has agreed to pay for the damages. •An unknown driver damaged a power pole on 12th Avenue North. •An intoxicated female in the 700 block of 11th Avenue South reported being assaulted by another female in her home. •A male who assaulted a female in the 300 block of Ninth Avenue South and threatened her life has been charged and has a court appearance pending. February 20 •A well-being check on a female in the 400
block of Seventh Avenue North revealed that she was OK. •Another well-being check on Aldrich Road, made after a concerning phone call from children in the home, resulted in a referral to a provincial ministry. •When police investigated a report that a male had received a phone call in which the only sound was of five gunshots, they found the caller had a different story. He said he had dropped the phone and it had bounced down a flight of stairs before breaking, so he had been unable to remake the call. •Once again a report was made about a male driving an unlicensed dirt bike on Riondel roads. The male has not been identified. •A bicycle was found near the mailboxes on Crusher Road. February 21 •An uninsured driver made an unsafe turn at Canyon-Lister Road and Highway 3, causing a collision. No injuries were reported. February 22 •A female driver reported gesturing to a male in a crosswalk to enter the intersection at Cook Street and 10th Avenue North. After an apparent battle of hand signals from each party, the male upped the ante with an obscene gesture. The driver telephoned police to complain. •Investigating police found that a complaint that a male was breaching a court order by being with his children was untrue. •An unwanted customer was reported by a Northwest Boulevard business. I have a feeling that I’m going to regret bringing up the subject of earworms. The mere mention of a song makes it possible that the tune will end up on an endless, looped track inside my head. To explain, earworms have been the subject of several Randy Bachman programs on CBC Radio. The reference is to tunes that burrow their way into one’s ear, then flourish in the deep recesses of the brain. The effect is so insidious that one is left to wonder if the particular thread of musical notes will ever find an escape. They do, but only to be replaced by another. When do you know you are seriously afflicted? On the weekend I was sitting on the couch, laptop computer on, well, my lap and I realized the song that was rolling through my head, over and over and over, was Beethoven’s A Song of Joy. Not a piano or philharmonic interpretation of Ode to Joy, but the Miguel Rios 1970 unlikely pop music hit. 1970? Yep, I had to look it up. And the really weird thing is that I might not have actually heard that particular version since that year. I remember some things about 1970 really well. I was 16 and in the summer took my first flight, jetting from Calgary to Miami with a friend. We spent two weeks with his relatives in West Palm Beach, then flew to Sidney, N.S., for another two weeks on Cape Breton Island, then took the train across

Mindfulness can be applied in all aspects of our lives
On Feb. 14, the Advance published my final column about the 59 Lojong slogans that were developed in Indonesia over 1,200 years ago. Before I move on to my next project I want to thank everyone who expressed an appreciation for those thousand-year-old teachings. Your comments about how they have clarified issues in your spiritual lives tell me that the wisdom of the Lojong slogans has passed the test of time. Such is the way of deep truth. I now want to turn my attention to a form of practice that is exploding in the medical, education and counselling fields: mindfulness. I will be writing a series of 12 columns about the ways that mindfulness training is being used as a therapeutic and educational tool in many areas of modern life. Even though mindfulness practice has been around since the historical Buddha gave his mindfulness-ofbreath sermon 2,500 years ago, it is only in the last 15 years that the deep value of mindfulness has penetrated contemporary medical, psychological and educational services. “Mindfulness” has become a buzzword of pop culture. These days everybody is talking about “being in the now”, the state of mind that
is the result of persistent and consistent meditation and mindfulness training. My next five columns will explore mindful eating, the applica-

tion of mindfulness to our relationship with food. In our busy lives, many of us have lost our connection with the eating process. We eat mindlessly, letting our attention rest on a newspaper, a book, a computer or the television while we, without awareness of “the now”, shovel food into our mouths. Mindful eating practices offer a variety of techniques that help us to reconnect with the pure pleasure of eating nourishing food in appropriate amounts. I’ll be exploring some of those techniques. Then I will move on to mindfulness as a method of anxiety, stress and chronic pain management. I have talked with so many people who are suffering from anxiety,
stress and chronic pain. Until 15 years ago when Jon Kabat-Zinn began to apply the ancient teachings of mindfulness to health problems at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, the most common remedy for anxiety, stress and chronic pain was drugs. Since then, the mindfulness-based stress groups that Kabat-Zinn developed have sprung up all over the western world, and have helped innumerable people with a variety of physical and mental health issues. The second half of this series will focus on the application of the ancient practice of mindfulness to anxiety, stress and chronic pain management. It is my sincere wish that you, the readers, benefit from my next series of columns as much as you tell me that you have benefited from the last one. In each of the next 11 columns I will continue to suggest a practice that is related to the topic at hand. I’d be interested in hearing about the effects that any one of my suggestions has on your relationship with eating and/or anxiety, stress and chronic pain. Time for a fresh look Open our eyes... (Re: “Those with dogmatic beliefs are the problem”, Feb. 14 Advance) I feel it is time for a frank, fresh look at what Jesus had to say about dogmatic religion. Dear Advance readers, enjoy your ride into a taboo territory. Jesus exposed religious leaders at Matthew 23: 13, 15, 33, “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. … Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are. … You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?” Need a second opinion? John the Baptist, addressing the Pharisees and Sadducees, said, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham.” (Matthew 3:7-9) At the last public discourse by Jesus before his betrayal and crucifixion, talking about the temple, he said, “Not one stone here will be left on another. Your house is left to you desolate.” He essentially said, “Forget the building, forget your religion; neither me nor my Father has anything to do with you anymore.” Jesus did not have a problem with prostitutes, tax collectors, lepers or any other sinners — he set free those who sought him and they became his true disciples. Jesus, however, was constantly on a collision course with the religious elite, who were so greedy, corrupt and blind that not only did they turn him over to hated Roman oppressors for crucifixion, but also have been persecuting, imprisoning and murdering his disciples ever after. Religion took away the Bible from the hands of ordinary people. When Guttenberg invented the printing press, religion did all possible to ban the Bible, burning all who dared to acquire, read or spread its message. Even today, religion tells us that we need either their dogmatic glasses or their dogmatic leaders in order to read

and understand the Bible for ourselves, and to live our lives based on the teachings and life of Jesus. African natives recalled how they became “Christians”: “We were told to close our eyes and lift our hands toward the heavens in prayer. When we opened our eyes, we had their Jesus and they had our land.” As Gandhi put it, “If I knew more Christians, I might become one.” Religion has one problem and two enemies. The problem? It does not know the God of the Bible. The enemies? God and a sound mind. For those with a sound mind, please find your answers for your sake and for the sake of humanity. Some facts never stated To the Editor: Certain important events or happenings are never mentioned by people with anti-Jewish sentiments like Clive England (“Those with dogmatic beliefs are the problem”, Feb. 14 Advance). They never mention that: •the Palestinians are increasing in population in Israel with many financially well off with more freedom. They would beat the average income of all the bordering Muslim countries if they did not start wars; •some Palestinians are elected to sit in government; •all the four big wars were all started by the Muslim holy war agenda; •the Muslim schools are teaching that Jews are descendants of monkeys, not real humans, and should be eradicated. Of course, Muslims are created by God; and •Israel does not train 14-year-olds for suicide bombings. Israelis do not blow up people-filled restaurants or tourists like the recent killing of Jewish tourists in Bulgaria, nor would they kill athletes in the Olympics as was done to them. Clive’s big complaint was that the Palestinians were stopped, questioned and searched so often, but not the Israelis. For security and less killing, it just makes good sense. How can we in Canada talk against Israelis doing construction in most of Israel? We Canadians have built for over 300 years on the natives’ disputed land, over a thousand times more than Israel has done. Yes, Clive, if you want to apply
it in Israel, first you should apply it in Canada or you are a hypocrite. Clive stated, “Neither [Robert] Slimm (‘Israel conflict is spiritual’, Feb. 7) nor I can say with any authority which belief may or may not be correct.” Obviously, your problem is that you do not know the Old Testament, because of the several hundreds of prophecies all coming true, even some in our time. This could not be done by man. No other religion has such a divine record and can therefore be written by man. So contrary to your belief, Clive, we can, without doubt, through knowledge come to that authoritative conclusion that the Jewish and Christian God is the only true god. To call Mr. Slimm dogmatic in regards to his letter is ridiculous. The Muslim beliefs in fighting holy wars are dogmatic. If the 15 per cent of Muslim clerics and radicals were left out, we would have very fine and lovable people. John Jorgensen Creston
business. They play to Creston’s strengths. My training as a commercial greenhouse grower leads me to try to reduce or eliminate all the risks associated with (spring) production. As expensive as greenhouses are, they do a pretty nice job of controlling your agricultural production. However, much of the nursery and all of the orchard crops are still at the mercy of Mother Nature. This spring could be a hard one if the outdoor air temperature keeps climbing. Buds Evan Davies will begin to swell on the trees and shrubs early. Most plant life earlier. The phone is ringing! There comes out of dormancy faster than it will be more planning ahead. People goes into it, so if the weather turns cold can get a little more inspired. Jesus loves everyone To the Editor: (Re: Consider This: “Religion versus the Bible”, Jan. 10 Advance) Jesus loves you, Vladimir Certik. This is my Father’s world. No matter what you think or say about Jesus, he loves everyone. How can that be bad? If you and anyone love Jesus, keep God’s laws, and then the world would be a better place. But when God created us (Gen. 1: 26-28), that’s who you are. We are all made in the image of God. That’s not fake. I am real. Who made you? If the Bible is just a book, God never made sin. Sin came when Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s laws. Genesis 3 happened because God, in Genesis 2:15-17, gave us a choice from the very beginning. We, as in Adam and Eve, made the world into what we all know now. Jesus wants you in heaven only by your choice. Through Jesus, you can really go to heaven. When the Bible is the cornerstone of the house that our Heavenly Father builds upon, Jesus calls everyone to love each other. That’s not bad. Jesus loves everyone, and that includes you, so why can’t you love everyone? Karen-Dee Jorgensen Creston

sleep better when I know all the crops are still fully dormant. This last year or two has brought us some new pests and diseases to contend with. There is a new fungal disease, boxwood blight, in B.C. now. It has spread across North America in only a year or two. It isn’t here in the valley yet, but it does raise the issue as where your plants come from. Most commercial wholesale nurseries in B.C. have some kind of healthy plants program that certifies their stock as being disease free. These are the people to deal with. “Clean” plants certification is worth asking for. The new insect pest in the province is the spotted wing drosophila (SWD). It is a small vinegar fly from Asia that migrated to California and then up the coast. They overwinter as an adult fly near their host plant. See GOOD, page 8

Answers to common questions
The tax experts at H&R Block answer one of the most frequently asked questions at this time of the year: Q: I have been living with my boyfriend since July 2012? Do I file as common-law? A: You are not considered commonlaw for tax purposes until you have lived together for 12 continuous months. But if you have children, you are considered common-law as soon as you begin living together. Your marital status is determined on Dec. 31 of the tax year. Once you are common-law, you continue to file individ-

ual returns, but with spousal information. There is no joint filing option in Canada. Q: My son lives in Ontario and thinks he may qualify for the working income tax benefit. How is it calculated? A: The WITB is designed to help people re-enter the workforce. To qualify, your son must have earned income in the last year. For single taxpayers with no children, the credit is equal to 20 per cent of earned income — in excess of $3,000 — up to a maximum of $970. If your son earns more than $17,148, he would not qualify. Q: I am a senior. How do I split my
pension income with my wife? A: Only certain types of pension income are eligible for income splitting, such as private pension income or, if you are 65 or older, payments from a RRIF. When you and your spouse file your 2012 tax return, you may be able to allocate up to 50 per cent of your qualifying pension to your spouse. You will need to complete form T1032 from the Canada Revenue Agency to elect to income split. More information is available at hrblock.ca. —News Canada
Managing personal debt
As if anyone needs their memory jogged, debt is a substantial problem for men and women living in fully developed countries. Estimates vary, but numerous surveys have indicated the average American household has more than $10,000 in credit card debt, a figure that doesn't include debt such as mortgages, car loans or student loans. In Canada, an early 2011 report from the Vanier Institute of the Family suggested the debt-to-income ratio for the average Canadian family was 150 percent, which means that for every $1,000 a Canadian

family earns, it owes $1,500. What these figures illustrate is that even the most financially savvy debtor may be in a precarious position, one that, should an unforeseen layoff or medical emergency occur, could turn disastrous in a relatively short period of time. As a result, an individual's ability to manage personal debt is of paramount importance, and the following tips can help men and women walking a financial tightrope address their debt in a way that might help them get back on their financial feet. •Eliminate bad debt. Not all debt is bad, but credit card debt is rarely good. Card holders with substantial credit card debt should contact their companies as soon as possible to see if the company is willing to work with them on a repayment plan. This is more prudent than declaring for bankruptcy, which will negatively impact an individual's credit score for years to come. Companies are often willing to work with card holders about repayment plans that make it easier to pay down debt. But once an agreement is made, card holders must make meeting the terms of that agreement their top priority. •Stop accruing bad debt. Using a card wisely is the key to avoiding unnecessary debt. When using credit cards, do not use them for everyday purchases like groceries or movie tickets. This type of credit card usage is habit forming, and it's very easy for card holders to quickly amass a large balance on their accounts for items they could just as easily could have paid for with cash. Keep in mind interest will be charged on all balances not paid in full each month, so don't make that cup of coffee or that pair of movie
tickets cost even more by adding interest to the overall cost. •Pay down high-interest debts first. Always work to pay down high-interest debt first while paying a little more than the minimum on low-interest debt. If a car loan came with an especially high interest rate (hint: borrowers whose down payment on a car loan was small or nonexistent are likely saddled with a high-interest loan), work to pay down that balance as much as possible. Something as simple as paying an extra $25 per month on a $200 per month car payment can reduce the length of time it takes to pay off that loan considerably. Once a high-interest debt is paid off, move on to the debt with the next highest interest rate. •Stop paying the bare minimum. Paying just the minimum will barely cover the interest. That means the principal will hardly disappear, and the debt will be a seemingly impossible obstacle to overcome. Pay more than the bare minimum each month, even if it means making sacrifices elsewhere. •Avoid borrowing from Peter to pay Paul. Transferring balances from a high-interest card to a lowinterest card is one thing, but borrowing against property or a retirement savings account is playing with fire. With regards to borrowing against a 401(k), the penalty to do so, not to mention the extra income tax such a withdrawal will accrue, before retirement is substantial. In addition, the value of those retirement savings will suffer considerably as the interest earned will be on that much less money until the full amount is paid back to the account. —Metro Creative Graphics
Good crops take work From page 7 The female adults lay eggs in soft fruits (such as cherries) and small fruits (berries), which develop into worms similar to but smaller than the western cherry fruit fly. Unlike the cherry fruit fly they can have many generations per year and have multiple host opportunities. More information is available at www.al.gov. bc.ca/cropprot/swd.htm. With such a mild winter I feel it worthwhile mentioning problems like these. A little extra pruning, training and general cleanup around the garden should go a long way to preventing these small problems from
becoming catastrophes. Healthy plants produce better crops and more of them. Remember to purchase virus indexed berry bushes when it is time to rejuvenate your garden plots. With the end of HST, you should be able to purchase all these edible items for seven per cent less. Garden seeds, berry bushes, fruit trees and peat moss had all been exempt from the previous PST. As usual, March is a busy time of year. We hope to be open by the third week of the month. The weather always plays a large part in it. Evan Davies owns Beltane Nursery at 2915 Highway 3 in Erickson.

Melting snow exposes well-kept secrets
and processes to continue. All this goes on under that blanket of snow, while, at the same time, we wish the snow wouldn’t come at all and/or we wish it would just go away. We walk or drive by it not even thinking of what is going on under the snow in the world of little creatures. So, when you sit in your
Melting snow reveals miniature winter trails.
Shrews are also active under that concealing blanket of snow. Smaller than most mice, they will push away soft snow with their pointed noses, making trails or tunnels to get to a choice food. Their diet is mainly insect and small invertebrate life. They can probably smell something several inches through the snow. They will make good use of tunnels made by other members of this very active winter community. It seems that many of the mouse-sized members of the mammal class are almost as active in winter as they are in summer. We may add to the list picas, which are active all winter under snow-covered rocks. At lower elevations there are jumping mice that hop over the snow to the next tree or bush where they get down to ground level through the space between the snow and the trunk. For all these, a cover of foliage gives protection in summer while in most winters they have the benefit of a snow blanket. So, in winter, it is business as usual. Snow, appreciate it or not, is just as necessary for us as it is for little beasties. It enables life
from the God of heaven concerning this secret.” That night, God revealed the secret to Daniel and in the morning he went to the king. Giving all glory to God, he said, “It is God who sets up and removes kings and he reveals the deep secrets to the wise. As the metals Daniel stepped forward with become less valuable, we see his three friends to “seek mercy history in advance. Babylon
(605 BC) was followed by the silver of the Medo-Persian empire (539 BC), which was followed by the bronze of Greece (331 BC). Then the iron kingdom of Rome (168 BC), and finally the feet, an iron and clay mix, representing Europe (476 AD). History attests to this. The final event is the stone that grows to fill the whole earth. God sets up His kingdom, which will never end. Daniel ends his explanation with the assurance that “God has made known to the king that which will come to pass after this. The dream is certain and its interpretation sure.” Jesus said, “I have told you before it comes to pass, that when it does come to pass you might believe.” (John 14:29) The purpose of prophecy is to establish hope and confidence in the God who knows the future, and has the world, and everything in it, under His control. We might be perplexed and despairing at times and cry out, “Is there anyone at the controls of planet Earth?” God answers, the evidence of fulfilled prophecy down through the centuries testifies that He is in control. As the song says, “He’s got whole wide world in His hands.” Ian Cotton is the retired pastor of the Creston Seventh-day Adventist Church. He can be reached at icotton@telus.net.

Q: What kind of leather was it? A: Not sure. Might have been deer. Q: What kinds of beads did you use? A: There were lots of different colours: red, yellow, blue, white and green too. Q: What kind of designs did you bead? A: The girls beaded flowers and leaves. The boys made diamond shapes.
Q: Was it hard? A: Willow found the beading pretty hard, but Cameron said it was harder sewing the leather pieces together. Q: What did you like the most about beading? A: Both the sewing and the beading were fun even though it was hard to put the needle through the leather sometimes. Q: Did you have fun and would you do it again? A: Yes! Our whole class had fun. It was neat to see the other things Mrs. Williams brought in too. She brought beaded moccasins, mittens and bracelets to show us.

Beaded bracelets special to students BY DANIELLE PALMER AND JOURNEY GORHAM
In November, our girls friendship group learned about beading. Our teacher was Mrs. Williams. She walked in the room with all of her supplies. She introduced herself to us and we introduced ourselves to her. She explained what we were going to be doing and showed us examples of some of her beadwork. She showed us moccasins, bracelets, necklaces, pine needle basket necklaces and different kinds of pouches. First, we all got some leather pieces she had already cut out for us to bead on. Then she explained how to bead different patterns on the leather and sew them up to make bracelets. There were lots of different colours of beads. The design she taught us was leaves and flowers. Sometimes the beading was easy and sometimes it was hard. The beads were really, really small and we had to thread the really, really skinny needles with the thread. That was kind of the hardest thing. It was hard to get the thread in the right place and try not to have knots in the thread. The easy part was sewing the two leather pieces together and then sewing on the snaps. The part that took the longest was the beading part. We each had five or six bunches of flowers on our bracelet. Most of us aren’t wearing them right now because we are keeping them on display at home. They are very special to us. Mrs. Williams knows a lot about beading and embroidery. She was very patient with us. We really enjoyed making our bracelets. It was a lot of fun!

A day at the amusement park BY LOGAN Grade 11
The goose bumps on my arms raise and an infestation of butterflies frolic about in my stomach. The click clanking noise of the chain dragging up our car to the top of the highest point of the coaster is loud and repetitive. When what has felt like an eternity of torment, I finally reach the top of the Monolith; the rest of the amusement park
stretches out across the land, a vast kingdom of fun, prizes and fear. As we make a U-turn towards certain impending doom, I start to get more anxious, wondering how I talked myself into doing this. Just as we come to the edge of what seems like the world we come to a sudden but expected stop. I gaze down into oblivion when suddenly we start to move forward. I close my eyes but then quickly open them back up,
realizing that the alternative is much better. I find myself being hurdled through dark tunnels, squished into my seat and then levitating in air for brief moments only to be swiftly pulled back down again into the bowels of my seat. The feeling of dread is replaced with acceleration. We gracefully come sailing into the coaster station, and just like that the ride is done. The safety harnesses release their protective grip and I am free.
Dinner interruption
BY EMILY Grade 10
The old man gasped, swinging his arm around to claw at the stunning pain in his left shoulder. His abandoned utensils made a loud squish as they fell to his plate, sending flecks of mashed potato across the table. The old woman looked up
in concern at her flailing husband. The old man breathed in raspy shallow breaths, trying to calm his thundering heart. Adrenalin shot through his worn veins, causing him to shake violently. Suddenly the woman snapped to action. Practically flying across the table she ignored the bowls and dishes that shattered as they hit the
tile floor. Reaching to his neck her hands found a small silver chain with a vibrant red button hanging at the end. She jammed her old fingers onto the button, the stared up at the man’s wrinkly weathered face. His wide eyes stared back at hers and his mouth broke out in a breathtaking smile as he slowly slumped from his seat and fell to the floor.

Hidden in the dark BY TY Grade 10
Chris hides. The old storage closet is dusty and dry. He can make out the faint footsteps in the distance. The thought of being found makes his adrenaline run. He holds his breath. The footsteps are no longer faint but loud. He shuffles some bags in front of
him, making him unnoticeable. The door opens; only its shadow is visible. In a last attempt he makes a dash for the door. He has been found, he can feel the hand grab his shirt. He’s it now, for the next round of hide and seek.

Creston figure skaters presenting ice show CRESTON VALLEY FIGURE SKATING CLUB
When you were a teenager, your parents probably told you to Get a Job. Now after years of working for the money, you may have felt the urge to tell your boss to Take this Job and Shove It. Approximately 75 skaters will participate in the Creston Valley Figure Skating Club’s ice show, Workin’ Nine to Five, a 90-minute extravaganza featuring the daily grind.
“The skaters have been working hard all year, and are really looking forward to showing off their skills,” said coach Fairlite Rogers. “The ice show is a lot of fun, for us and the audience.” The show takes place on March 2 at the John Bucyk Arena. There will be two performances, at 1 and 5 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students and seniors. From farmers to miners, hairdressers to mechanics, there will be a number for everyone!

It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our father, grandfather, Douglas Arthur Taylor, who was born in Vancouver December 8, 1937 and passed suddenly at his home in Qualicum Beach on February 12, 2013. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Marjorie and Frank and many loving grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins and friends, Àrst wife Petra. He will be sadly missed by his sons Robert (Aggie), Stuart (Sandra); granddaughters Ayla and Emily; grandsons Andrew and Owen, of whom he was so proud; sister Joan (George); sisters-in-law Dawn Eve and Maxine; brother-in-law Guy, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, ex-wife Glenna and friends made over the years working for CIBC in postings all over the province. Doug attended David Livingstone Elementary and graduated from King Edward High. He always had a job, starting with a paper route when he was eleven. He was an Eagle Scout, the cowboy in the white hat. After a lifetime career with CIBC, he returned to his beloved Qualicum after retirement. His life was dedicated to serving others ( receiving many civic awards) and also protecting the environment, most recently highly promoting the sustainability of our salmon, through his work with Streamkeepers and vocally supporting Alexandra Morton. He was involved with many service clubs over the years, was named Citizen of the Year in Creston where he chaired the Blossom Festival for many years, worked with Citizens on Patrol, was Treasurer of Qualicum Curling Club for many years, organized the annual one-mile swim, etc. Doug enjoyed curling, boating and Àshing, the comraderies of many friends along the way. He owned, loved and spoiled his dogs from childhood on, the last being Lucy, Rowdy and Keisha. A life well lived and regrets there were few. He was much loved, will be sorely missed by so many and now joins his heavenly family. On March 2, 2013 at 11:00 a public Celebration Service followed by reception will be held at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre, 747 Jones St., Qualicum Beach. On March 5, 2013 at 11:00 a funeral and reception will be held at Mount Pleasant Funeral Home, 306 East 11th Ave., followed by interment at Mountainview Cemetery. ,n lieu of Áowers, donations would be welcome by the David Suzuki Foundation or Streamkeepers Qualicum Beach Society.

Annual awards celebrating UsedKootenays.com a local resource in best in Kootenay music online classifieds
KOOTENAY MUSIC AWARDS
The Kootenay Music Awards are back for a second year of celebrating homegrown talent. Sponsored by the Nelson Brewing Company and Black Press, the awards are currently accepting nominations for artists in every genre of music — from punk rock to folk bands and electronic producers. There are also awards for the year’s best artist, album and song. “If you’re making music in the Kootenays and you have an MP3 you can send us, we want to hear from you,” said Chad Hansen, founder and president of the Kootenay Music Awards. A panel of music industry professionals will listen to every submission and shortlist the top four or five entries in each of the 10 categories. Then it will be up to the public to decide with their online votes which artists deserve the titles. The winners will be announced at an awards banquet at Nelson’s Spiritbar on May 10. Hansen said the contest provides incredible exposure for the shortlisted artists. “Last year, artists were getting 2,000 unique listens on the tracks up for awards,” he said. “It’s a really great opportunity for an up-and-comer or established artists alike to get exposed to new audiences in all of the communities in the Kootenays.” Last year, it was Fernie’s Shred Kelly that went away with coveted title of artist of the year, while Nelson’s the Automation was named best new band. Hansen can’t wait to see who will enter the competition this year.

Chad Hansen of the Kootenay Music Awards at last year’s awards banquet. This year’s Kootenay Music Awards are currently seeking nominations.
“There’s so much musical talent in the Kootenays,” he said. “There’s great bands just jamming in their basements or playing for the dinner crowd at local restaurants — we want to dig out those hidden gems.” With the help of Black Press community papers, including the Creston Valley Advance, all the performers in the running for an award will be in the spotlight. “The reach of the awards has grown exponentially,” Hansen said. “We’ll be exposing people to artists from Golden to Grand Forks and all the communities in between.”
To nominate yourself or someone else for a Kootenay Music Award, go to kootenaymusicawards.ca and click “nominate” in the page banner. Nominations close March 31 and online voting will run April 7-30. Other sponsors for the event are AM Ford (Platinum), Selkirk College (Platinum), Chatterson Drive (Gold), Wapiti Music Festival (Gold), Kootenay Savings Credit Union (Gold), Bee Kissed Body Piercing (Gold), Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism (Gold) and Nelson’s Ric’s Lounge and Grill (Silver).
Looking for a job, a new car, maybe trying to get rid of an old set of bunk beds; or are you a collector? UsedKootenays.com is a resource not to be overlooked. With the rise of online classified sites such as Kijiji or Craigslist, UsedKootenays.com offers up an alternative that aims to connect with the community offline that it’s bringing together online. “We actually have a genuine concern and care for the communities we serve,” says Erin Richards, marketing co-ordinator for UsedKootenays.com, which is also owned by Black Press. Black Press is the largest publisher of community newspapers in B.C. and has newspapers in every community in the Kootenay region. Recently, all of the Kootenay Black Press titles began running all of its print classified ads on UsedKootenays.com. “We feel this is a great value for our customers and makes Black Press the best option when it comes to placing classified advertising throughout the Kootenays,” said Chuck Bennett, group publisher for Black Press in the Kootenays. “We are really excited about this opportunity for us to grow our business in this area, but more importantly, this is good for our customers.” This partnership also aligns well with the values of UsedKootenays.com, as being truly local. “We have staff on the ground in most of the communities we serve. They involve us in local community events, we partner with local non-profits and chari-
ties. ... We want to be that different classifieds that cares about the people using our sites,” said Richards. UsedKootenays.com has its own charity as well. Called the Community Angel Program, Richards explains staff, or “angels”, spend time looking for ways to help out a person placing an online ad. “Their job is to search our sites to find people who have posted ads saying they’re in need,” she says. “That can be anyone — from a single mom who needs a birthday present for her son because she can’t afford one this year to a senior needing a new battery for their scooter.” The angel makes contact and meets with them in person to learn their story. “Whether that’s financially or whether they just need help connecting to other resources, we do our best to give them a hand,” says Richards. “We really want to have personal connections with our users.” Also setting them apart from other online shopping venues is tighter moderation, ensuring things like weapons, puppy mills and pornography aren’t promoted. Scams, spam and low quality content are less likely to appear on this site, as well. It’s all part of maintaining a high quality service that allows a positive exchange of goods with those living nearby. “People want to buy and sell from their neighbours, from people that they trust, from people living in their own communities,” Richards says. Secondhand bargain shopping is also the trend among many trying to save a buck these days. As well, it’s convenient to shop from a home computer, says Richards. “You can see the item right there online and you get all the information and then you just go pick it up.” As part of a network of websites across the country, UsedKootenays.com covers the entire Kootenay region but users can narrow down a search based on how far they’re willing to look. On Facebook and Twitter, UsedKootenays. com is increasing its profile after a few years of operation. The feedback forum on their site is also open for comments from users who see a way they can better serve the immediate area. “I would love to engage in some dialogue with people in the Kootenays,” says Richards.

The Creston Field Naturalists counted 10,180 birds — about 2,000 less than 2011 — during the annual Christmas Bird Count on Dec. 27. thrush (5), European starling (1,359), Bohemian waxwing (1,049), cedar waxwing (304), spotted towhee (4), American tree sparrow (5), song sparrow (77) and dark-eyed junco (278). A snowy owl and western screechowl were each seen during count week (three days before and three days after Dec. 27). In all, 43 fielders and 45 feeder watchers took part in the count, spending a total of 119 hours, walking 39.5 kilometres and driving 1,110.1 kilometres. “I want to give special mention to our growing group of night observers who have nudged out so many ‘night owls’ formerly elusive to us,” said Sharon Laughlin, one of the organizers. “Some contributors have said they didn’t see much but I want to impress that every sighting is important — and without the count of each bird that each one of you saw and recorded, this day would not have been a success.”

Peewee Chiefs earn East Kootenay banner
CRESTON VALLEY MINOR HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
The Creston Valley Minor Hockey Association’s peewee Chiefs hosted and won the East Kootenay banner tournament on the weekend at the John Bucyk Arena, with six teams attending. On Friday, Chiefs beat Elk Valley 4-0. The locals came out a little slow, but Elk Valley was ready to play from the get-go. It was a well-played game with only two penalties called, the Chiefs got on the board with five seconds left in the first period with a goal scored by Davis Nelson assisted by Serge Chatwin and Kale Plotnikoff. Ty Gudjonson scored the lone goal of the second period with Nelson assisting. With two minutes left in the game, Shayne Walker scored an empty netter assisted by Brayden Jellis and Matthew Phillips helping. Plotnikoff rounded out the scoring with a goal with at 0:46. Also on Friday, the Chiefs took on Glacier, winning 11-0. The Chiefs came
out and dominated from the get-go. Leading the way were Plotnikoff with five goals and an assist, Jellis with a hat trick, and Nelson with four assists. There was a lot of passing, and everyone chipping in with points and playing structure makes games a little bit easier. In the semifinal on Saturday, the Chiefs shut out Invermere 5-0. Chatwin scored 10 seconds into the game, assisted by Matthew Hills and Plotnikoff, which set the tone for a great start. Then, 37 seconds later, Logan Rast assisted by Jellis and Tyson Steed made it a quick 2-0 lead for the boys. Also scoring for Creston were Plotnikoff assisted by Gudjonson and Nathan Griffioen, Gudjonson unassisted, and Hills assisted by Phillips. It was probably the Chiefs’ best start to a game this season — playing from the front gave them confidence and allowed them to relax a bit. In Sunday’s banner final, the Chiefs defeated Cranbrook 4-2. Cranbrook woke Creston up early with a goal a minute-
and-a-half into the game, and the Chiefs responded 32 seconds later with Plotnikoff scoring a huge goal to tie it up — a great response from one of Creston’s leaders. The Chiefs added two more in the first period, with Plotnikoff getting a hat trick, assisted by Nelson, Gudjonson and Jellis. Hills scored in the second assisted by Chatwin and Walker, and Cranbrook added a late goal to make it 4-2. The locals ran into a few penalties late in the game for an exciting finish, but it was a good test and the Chiefs handled the pressure very well. With the Chiefs being back-to-back East Kootenay champions and also undefeated for two years in league play, the banner remains home in Creston. The coaching staff is very proud of this team. Their commitment, structure and determination makes it a special win and they deserve all the credit — they always give 100 per cent and never complain. On Sunday, the Chiefs defeated Cranbrook a second time, in zone game 1.
It’s always tough to come out after a banner win and play the same team again, this time for zones and seeding for provincials to be held in Creston in March, since both clubs are attending. It was another good test for the team to shift its mindset and realize it’s the best-of-three playoff format — they are still playing for the right to be zone champions. Cranbrook led 1-0 after the first and that’s all they would get. Rast tied the score in the second period, assisted by Plotnikoff and Steed, then took the lead with Gudjonson scoring assisted by Etienne Boutet. Cranbrook pulled their goalie late in the game, and with a great breakout with 34 seconds left from Creston’s end, Chatwin assited by Plotnikoff and Jellis iced it for the home team and a one-game lead. Games like these will help the team provincials — it takes heart, effort and an overall team game to be successful. Zone game 2 runs Friday in Kimberley and game 3, if needed, is Sunday in Creston.
