Gray Creek resident recognized for community achievement Nelson Staff West Kootenay Advertiser

The province awarded Gray Creek resident Tom Lymbery this week for his contributions to his community. Well-known on the East Shore, Lymbery has been vital to the growth and development of the community for over 50 years. From the Chamber of Commerce to the East Shore Health Board to the Gray Creek Histori-

cal Society, Lymbery has contributed immensely to several organizations. The semi-retired owner of the Gray Creek store also worked on the Trans Canada Trail project. Premier Christy Clark and Keith Mitchell, chair of the British Columbia Achievement Foundation, recently named this year’s recipients. “Communities are built by people who step up to the plate

like to thank and congratulate the outstanding individuals named today for their

contributions. British Columbia’s biggest strength is people like them.”

The spotlight continues to shine on Lymbery who was also recently featured in Scrivener, the quarterly journal of the Society of Notaries Public of BC. As a notary he has served the East Shore since 1961. Lymbery’s autobiography, tentatively titled Tom’s Gray Creek — A Kootenay Lake Memoir, will be published this year to coincide with his family store’s 100th anniversary.

An independent advisory council selects the recipients of the British Columbia Community Achievement Awards. The recipients of the 2013 British Columbia Community Achievement Awards will be recognized in a formal presentation at Government House in Victoria on March 14, 2013. Each will receive a certificate and a medallion designed by B.C. artist Robert Davidson.

Introducing James Hunnex: Erie area’s pioneer pharmacist Spokane that began at 8 p.m. and lasted until 4 a.m., resulting in a draw. Hunnex was honourary vice-president of the BC Chess Federation in 1916. After fire wiped out his store in 1932, he decided to retire, but two years later built

Second of two parts Although the ghost town of Erie was home to several notable and longtime residents such as Olaf Haglund and Joe and Hattie Read, today we’ll focus on its druggist, James Robert Hunnex. Born in 1854 in England, Hunnex earned a degree in pharmacy and lived at Los Angeles and San Francisco before arriving in Victoria around 1894. Something lured him to West Kootenay and he established a drug store on Dewdney Avenue in Trail. He moved to Waterloo — now lower Ootischenia — to operate its drug store and post office in 1897-98, then went to Erie where he opened a store and pharmacy that dealt in groceries, work clothing, hardware, and mining and logging supplies. In The Early Salmo Story (recently reprinted in full as part of Salmo Stories), Rollie Mifflin wrote that Hunnex “was known far and

One day, just before the daily train arrived, Mrs. Hunnex informed her husband she was running off with the clerk. “It is said that he kissed her goodbye, offered his hopes for her future happiness and, who knows, maybe thanked his Lord that the train now about to pass would take her

away forever. It did.” In addition to minding the store, Hunnex was postmaster, justice of the peace, and mining recorder, although as Erie’s fortunes declined, even these extra roles failed to keep him busy. He devoted his spare time to chess and checkers. Hunnex once belonged to the London Chess Club and participated in a multi-player telegraph match between Victoria and San Francisco. Debate club to host provincial event Sherie Regnier West Kootenay Advertiser

You can be the judge of an argument with rules. The B.C. High School Debate Championship will be hosted in Trail on March 1 and 2 and volunteers are still needed to judge the great discussions of youth in action. “A lot of it is listening to the debate and recording your honest reaction,” said Marilyn Lunde, J.L. Crowe teacher librarian and regional coordinator for the Debate and Speech Association of B.C. (DSABC). A total of 80 teams, in groups of two ranging from Grade 6 to Grade 12, from around the province will be in the Home of Champions for the Law Foundation Cup, which will be held at

And while the students will come ready to debate, finding judges may be tougher to answer. “A community spirit that likes to support the future of youth is most important,” said Lunde, describing the criteria for volunteer judges. While experience is helpful, guidance will be provided to those who are new to the task. On March 2, a

judge’s workshop will be held that explains what to listen for and how to score the debate, explained Lunde. Typically, two teams are presented a resolution or topic that they will debate, and each team is given a set period of time to prepare an argument. To win the debate, the student must be a clever thinker, and have a broad knowledge of current events and be able to listen effectively, said THE KOOTENAY’S ONLY

Sometimes each team member speaks, and sometimes the team selects one member to speak for the entire team. “The best debaters are able to include the conversation of their opponent in their own discussion,” said Lunde. “Then turn the opposition’s arguments to their favour.” The facts the stuDIGITAL 3D MOVIE THEATRE

dents present must be accurate; use of words must be persuasive; and a conflict must exist between the points of view presented. Topics will be both prepared and impromptu. “The morning (March 2) will be cross examination style and the topic is ‘be it resolved that judges be elected,’” explained Lunde. The students will not know their afternoon subjects ahead of time. “We are given 15 minutes to organize our thoughts and deliver it in eight,” said Emily Dawson, member of the grade 11 team. The goal is to come up with a good argument in a short amount of time. “The afternoon will be impromptu topics that focus on current events,” said Jesse Bartsoff, Grade 11 debater. “Anything can be sprung on us,” he explained. “It can include the senate, first nations rights and marijuana legalization, to name a few.” Novice, junior and senior teams will be judged over four rounds of debates and winners will be recognized at the wind-up banquet and award ceremony at the Colombo Lodge on Saturday night. “We welcome participation from the community to see these amazing young people develop their public speaking and critical thinking skills,” said Lunde. Trail briefs A lack of qualified personnel in the Kootenays is the reason 5N Plus, a company in Trail, is closing. The company, which purchased Firebird Technologies in 2009 has issued pink slips to its 75 staff members. “I think the biggest challenge we had there was to attract and retain competent personnel,” said Jean Mayer, the company’s director of legal and corporate affairs, in an interview with the Trail Times on Tuesday from his office in Montreal. “It’s an isolated area, and we found it was difficult to retain personnel compared with the bigger player in the area, Teck.” Mayer said that even though 5N Plus offered competitive employment conditions; the plant could not attract the people it needed to sustain the company. Most of the activities in Trail will be consolidated to a U.S. subsidiary located in Utah, called Sylarus Technologies. “Part of the activities will be moved to our head office in Montreal, the rest will be transferred to the U.S.,” he explained. “The plant in Trail will be closed in the next few months.” Goal reached Women in the region will soon have a clearer picture to aid in early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases. The Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) Health Foundation has reached its goal of raising funds to replace its 11-year-old film mammography machine with a digital mammography with stereotactic capabilities. A turnout sufficient to fill the staff lounge at Selkirk College in Castlegar learned more about the Columbia River Treaty on February 21. Delivering a luncheon presentation to the 30 or so interested attendees was Chris Trumpy, Senior Economist with the B.C. Government’s Columbia River Treaty Review. The event was the latest in a series of similar functions staged by the Kootenay Association for Science and Technology (KAST). The treaty has overseen the creation of a network of dams which has served the purpose of flood control on both sides of the border, along with hydro-power generation. The international agreement represents diplomatic and engineering components that are equally massive. The treaty was negotiated about 50

years ago and the reason it’s been receiving a spike in attention of late is because the first window of opportunity for cancelling the pact is due to close next year. That’s not to suggest that any such thing is likely to happen, just that written into the deal is the proviso that plenty of notice be given before either signatory takes such action. Here’s the exact wording as quoted from Review literature: “Either Canada or the U.S. can unilaterally terminate most of the provisions in the Columbia River Treaty

anytime after September 16, 2024, providing at least ten years’ notice is given.” No renewal of the agreement is required – it will continue in perpetuity as long as no action is taken to end it. Making up the bulk of the related infrastructure are three dams in Canada: the Duncan; Arrow Lake (Hugh Keenleyside), and Mica dams constructed from 1967 to 1973, and the Libby Dam in Montana. Some aspects of the system will continue even in the event of a treaty termination. Assured Annual Flood

This one had a particularly high level of attendance, and a lot of interest from industry professionals. I think it’s because as we approach the potential notice date for cancellation, revisions or modifications to the treaty, people have a lot of interest as to what’s going on there. It has a huge impact… environmentally, socially and economically.” A lot of attendees were students broadening their knowledge of the treaty issue as well as honing their networking chops. Former Selkirk College student Eugene Voykin has a long standing interest in the treaty and in the river system itself. He has a desire to do a Columbia River canoe trip from headwaters to mouth, and has conducted preliminary fact and opinion finding work along much of the river’s length. “I think when you’re looking at something that’s so large… to please everybody is impossible,” said Voykin. “So I think it’s finding that balance between both sides and the balance between ecological needs and the need for hydro power… to kind of bridge the dialogue from not just the political side, but also from the people side.” A consultant named Dave Dipock of Rossland-based Bear Environmental gave his opinion on the value of a session like the one held that day at Selkirk College. “The treaty is probably one of the most significant things that can affect us locally in our lifetimes,” said Dipock. “This is going to set the framework for how the river will be managed for many years to come.” More meetings and events are on the horizon, including a more detailed, technical...

Some of Castlegar’s upcoming artistic attractions to note

submitted

The Kootenay Gallery will open its exhibition season on March 8 with the work of one of Canada’s most well-known and widely recognized landscape artists, John Hartman. The exhibition entitled John Hartman: The Columbia in Canada, is a series of 30 watercolours painted along the Columbia River over a span of several years. Though the imag-

es are small in scale, this watercolour series represents large vistas painted “en plein air” from vantage points high above the river. They will be familiar landscapes to those who call this region home and who proudly take their visitors to these lookouts to show off the beautiful views. Hartman’s fascination with history drew him to this significant river that has so impacted the human history of the region. He

followed the Columbia River, beginning in the Rockies, heading north and then winding down through British Columbia to

SAVE THOUSANDS

the United States. Hartman chose to tour a selection of these works to the Kootenay region where the greatest

number of the paintings were completed. The exhibit will be accompanied by a full colour catalogue, reproducing each work.

Another exhibition running concurrently with the Hartman exhibit will be the large sacale images of Victoria-based photographer, Mike Andrew McLean, entitled Range. McLean too is fascinated with how landscape has shaped the human experience, more specifically the lives of those who live and work in the Mountain National Parks. Recognizing their historical significance,

McLean is committed to documenting these vast wilderness landscapes with hopes of promoting their preservation. These two exhibitions will run from March 8 to April 20 at the Kootenay Gallery located across from the Castlegar (West Kootenay Regional) Airport, adjacent to the Doukhobor Discovery Centre. The Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10-5 p.m.

Citizen scientists get tools MARVIN BEATTY West Kootenay Advertiser

Biodiversity Atlas provides new reporting options. Those living, working, playing and travelling along the length of the Columbia River Basin have a unique opportunity to help scientists uncover the environmental complexities of the area’s flora and fauna. The Columbia River Basin Biodiversity Atlas, initially funded and developed by the Fish & WIldlife Compensation Program in 2001 is a conservation planning and decision making project. It provides scientific data to various users in an easy-to-understand format. The Columbia River is the key river system in south-eastern B.C. and the Pacific Northwest, stretching into Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington. Ian Parfitt, Coordinator at the Selkirk Geospatial Research Centre at Selkirk College says a new

set of online tools now allows anyone to contribute useful data to the project. “We began with the project being a way for communicating and sharing information coming from biologists who were collecting information on different projects,” Parfitt said. “We would get data and reports and it was sort of a tool to send stuff out and with this release we’ve built in citizen reporter tools.” At the website, http://biodiversityatlas.org, one can register to report things such as roadkill, nest box sightings or even which specific trees are providing habitat for wildlife. Now, with the help of partners and volunteers from industry, government and educational institutions, the project is gaining momentum and developing data helpful to a wide range of users. Summer interns in geographic information systems courses often work on the project and benefit from co-op opportu-

nities with biologists from various government ministries and industry experts. The atlas is also being used by School District # 8 students as part of the Kootenay Lake Learning Commons “e-resources”. Over the last 10 years, the project has mapped the entire Canadian portion of the Columbia River Basin, identifying 42 species of concern. In a press release, Valerie Huff, Project Coordinator for the Kootenay Camas Project, said, “Adding new tools for public participation in scientific research is a win-win for conservation, providing scientists with rich biogeographic information while making it easy for people without science backgrounds to get involved in the monitoring and restoration of important local species, like the camas lily.” The government has also used the Biodiversity Atlas to identify and address important land acquisition processes.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor

for the

Week

March 1, 2013

Tip of the Week: Already there are 6 and at the time of the New Moon on March 11th there will be 7 planets’ in Pisces! The Sun entered Pisces on February 18 at 4:02 am PST. Mars and Mercury were already there since February 1st and 5th, respectively. Neptune and Chiron have been in close alignment in Pisces since April 2011. Mercury turned retrograde in Pisces on the 23rd. By the time it finally enters Aries on April 13th it will have been in Pisces, generally a challenging sign position for Mercury, for 67 days. Venus enters Pisces 6 hours after the Full Moon on February 25th, where it will remain until Spring Equinox. Mars will remain in Pisces until March 11, when it enters Aries, coinciding with the New Moon in Pisces! This 12th Sign of the Zodiac is the most mysterious and mystical of all. Where Aries is the newborn infant and Aquarius is the elder, Pisces symbolizes the disembodied soul. The oceanic realms of the world, of the subconscious, of the cosmos and of the many levels of the Astral Dimensions are all symbolically linked to Pisces. No person manifests the fullness of an archetype, yet people who are strongly influenced by Pisces, Neptune and the 12th House, at best, tend to be at wise, mystical, poetic, psychic compassionate, and imaginative geniuses. At worst, those strongly influenced by Pisces tend to be repressed, depressed, oblivious and prone to hyper-sensitivity, self-pity, denial, escapism and addiction. As the teeter totters, most people tend to at least occasionally manifest all extremes of their dominant archetypes. Actively endeavoring to understand themselves and others, verses passively hoping to be understood, is a saving grace for ‘Piscean people’.

ARIES (MAR 21 – APR 20)

The urge to escape or hibernate until winter finally ends may be strong now. Some retreat periods can be productive but this one asks that all progress be of the inner spiritual sort. This may be contrary to your nature. Yet, swimming against the current is hardly practical. Intend to be more empathetic and compassionate and/or to retreat in preparation for spring.

TAURUS (APR 20 – MAY 21)

Sharing ideas, visions, plans and dreams with friends is likely now. With Mercury retrograde, allow yourself to brainstorm without feeling the need to take deliberate action now. The drafting stage of projects often undergoes many revisions. Make this clear to yourself and others to avoid misunderstandings. What you say now may be remembered long after.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUN 21)

Getting a lot of exposure now may actually come easily. Yet, there are indications that you do and do not want it. Concerns about what others think are leading you to feel protective of your energy levels and your reputation. Silence is golden and though not typical of your sign, whether due to inner or outer chatter, now is a good time to practice it.

CANCER (JUN 21 – JUL 22)

LIBRA (SEP 22 – OCT 22)

We have all entered a delicate cycle. The currents are less predictable than ever, their directional flow uncertain. This could affect your health levels and overall lifestyle. It is extra important now that you be more deliberate to either preserve and ideally to increase the quality of your health. Fortify your immune system and sanitize your living environment….

SCORPIO (OCT 22 – NOV 21)

This effulgence of Piscean influence may prove to be a boon for you more than many others. It signifies a very fertile imagination. As ever, how you use your free will to engage this energy pattern is important. For now it may prove most worthwhile to gather and accumulate ideas, insights and inspirations and to identify approaches worthy of your emulation.

SAGITTARIUS (NOV 21 – DEC 21)

Many emotions are flowing through you now and affecting you at core levels of your psyche. These may simply be inspiring you to make changes close to home, to fix, clean, uplift and beautify your environment. This impulse may still be in its gestation phase but if you tune-in and bring attention to it, the ideas and strategies will materialize.

A meditative, contemplative and philosophical mood continues. Profound experiences and insights are more available than usual. A heightened sensitivity to the details may produce sublime realizations. The key is to be in-tune and aware lest this deep and delicate state be misinterpreted as depression. Make extra efforts to speak less and listen more for the next while.

CAPRICORN (DEC 21 – JAN 19)

LEO (JUL 22 – AUG 23)

AQUARIUS (JAN 19 – FEB 19)

VIRGO (AUG 23 – SEP 22)

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

You may feel like you have arrived at a crossroads. Entering the unknown often produces anxiety. However, there is no turning back. Endings are ever followed by new beginnings. The key is to persevere with faith and will. You would like to have a clearer vision of the future, but it is not yet available. Exercise patience with outer activity while you recalibrate internally.

Many changes are occurring especially on relationship fronts. Yet, it may seem as though you have entered a thick fog and so are unable to clearly see what is happening. It may take until mid- March at least before the confusion clears and perhaps even until mid-April. The more you can humbly, respectfully and faithfully cooperate with this delay the better.

It is ironic that sometimes our clearest visions and deepest insights come about when our conscious focus is diffused, like now. As though in a lucid dream, reality seems different somehow, yet you can take deliberate action. You are being offered the opportunity to step away from the norm. Whether you do so for a little while or forever, is for you to decide.

Dreams of what might be are dancing in your mind. The challenge is to match these with your values, priorities and practical reality. The key now is that you assert a perceptual lead. This means the more you can perceive the possibilities the more you will be able to conceive them. So, you job now is to dream, visualize and imagine.

Many hopes, wishes, plans and ambitions are gestating in your mind. Next week’s New Moon in your sign will serve to activate these more fully into reality. Still, you may require some added assistance to actualize your intentions. Take the initiative to reach out to your key connections. Be ready and willing to cooperate and avoid trying to go it alone.
