Plans to get an updated business licensing bylaw on the table for public input were stalled Monday night when councillors voted to send the proposed draft back to staff for more information. One particular concern, both to councillors, and about 35 people

who packed the council chamber, was the inclusion of specific regulations for escorts and escort agencies. Staff proposed council give first reading to the bylaw which has been a year in drafting, and then advertise it and collect feedback over a four week period before bringing it back to the Mar. 25 council meeting for consideration of second reading with or without amendments.

However Councillors Sean McIntyre and Dale Plante preferred the second option presented to them — that council request further information. Councillors voted unanimously to approve that direction following sometimes heated debate. Councillor Ken MacVicar was absent from the meeting. The evening began with several speakers at the open microphone

session imploring town councillors not to allow escorts and escort agencies to operate in town. Once the item came before council, Tim Schmidt, the town’s director of planning and development, stated that today escorts agencies could operate in town without municipal restrictions. “They are legal businesses and are allowed to operate, subject to

regulation within the powers and limitations of municipalities,” he said. Changes to the bylaw are to add restrictions and impose fees higher than those for other businesses. “It’s appropriate to have regulations within the bylaw,” Schmidt said, but he also noted, “a municipal bylaw must not be for morality”. Martin to work with underprivileged children in Peru will spend nine months running video workshops with poor, underprivileged children. Martin, who holds a masters degree in International Development, is a volunteer with SKIP, (Supporting Kids In Peru) an international non-profit charity.

one’s pleasure only is different than experiencing other cultures as a volunteer. Julie Nielsen, 21, who completed her teacher’s practicum at École Fox Run School has been working with Martin to involve students in the school with the SKIP program. Nielsen, who is a thirdyear education student from the University of Alberta helped students make postcards which Martin will take to Peru and she also wants to have the youngsters here create videos about their lives and families which will be available on-line. “This project is important, we want be able to communicate with the kids in Peru about our lifestyle here.” Both young women are grateful to École Fox Run School for their involvement and support with the project. systems in Peru are not free and many families cannot afford the cost which means, for many uneducated parents, the difference that an education can make in their children’s futures remains unrealized. In addition, a wide range of social problems ranging from family violence to drug dependency, are disturbing issues which

need to be addressed. As well as providing educational support, SKIP volunteers strive to educate and empower parents so they can improve their own living circumstances. Social work and psychological support also helps parents deal with difficult issues and gain better understanding about how to manage their children’s behaviour.

McIntyre chastised for riling public, not providing full information by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

Councillor Sean McIntyre was taken to task by Mayor Susan Samson for failing to provide residents with full information on the

town’s proposed business license bylaw which unleashed a flurry of sometimes angry and derogatory email and social media messages to councillors over the weekend. When the item came up for debate at

Monday night’s council meeting, Tim Schmidt, director of planning and development, outlined how the draft had been prepared beginning with council approving a terms of reference for the rewrite last March and

indicating specific businesses were included following a resolution passed by council last November as a result of a staff-generated discussion paper reviewed at that time. Then Samson addressed the audience

Continued from page 1 Regulations in the bylaw would require escorts and escort agencies to provide a variety of information and meet certain conditions. Among those conditions is the requirement of the licensing inspector to refer any application to the RCMP for comments, indicated Schmidt. Annual fees for escorts would be $300 a year and for escort agencies $5,000 per year. The bylaw also provides penalties for operating without licences ($2,500 for escorts and $7,500 for escort agencies) and breaches of conditions of the licences. Councillors, at their Nov. 26 meeting, reviewed a discussion paper which identified the need for ‘proactive regulations’ for certain ‘unique’ businesses based on information received from other municipalities and agencies. (See story in Sylvan Lake News, Nov. 29, 2012 - front page, which is available under e-editions on our website.) At that time councillors passed a motion asking staff to proceed with drafting the bylaw. McIntyre and councillor Rick Grimson voted against the motion. Plante was absent from that meeting. McIntyre had argued prohibiting escorts and escort agencies was not a moral issue but one of health and safety. He pointed to another part of the staff recommendation which stated rickshaws and pedicabs should be prohibited from operating in the town’s downtown core because they’d become a public safety issue, delaying traffic in the busy narrow corridor during the heat of the

summer season. He made similar comments Monday night. The discussion paper, he asserted, contained some general detail about why rickshaws should be banned because they were a safety issue but “I did not see the same level of information on escorts and escort agencies, or any information.” McIntyre was challenged by Samson that he was getting into discussion of the bylaw which was not the purpose of first reading. She suggested he take the same position as Plante did earlier that councillors request further information rather than pass first reading. At that, McIntyre provided a lengthy list of questions pertaining to the escort issue. Among them was whether the RCMP staff sergeant felt he currently has the resources to keep escorts safe, how many additional members and the cost that might be required for doing so, when new members would be available, what taxation would be required to pay for their services, and whether the potential increased cost is reflected in the business license fee for these businesses. To the Community Services department, he asked if they have adequate programs to help escorts wanting to exit

the business, what resources would be needed and the taxation required to pay for the programs. McIntyre also noted the bylaw “doesn’t make mention to areas of operation. Can they set up in residential neighbourhoods as home occupations? Will neighbours be informed?” “We need more information,” he concluded. Plante had earlier criticized the process indicating the proposal was for four weeks of seeking public input without the opportunity for debate. “Council is going to see the exact same bylaw in four weeks,” he suggested. Schmidt indicated that four weeks would allow time to advertise, compile input and for administration to review comments and bring forward changes that council might want to consider. Samson added that the Mar. 25 meeting would be the time for

debate of input from the public and to propose changes. “It’s the typical way we do bylaws.” However Plante said, “We seem to have identified contentious issues that have not been addressed anywhere.” He noted the issues of gambling, casinos and strip bars. “Why do we have escort agencies, why not some of the other, what we would consider, detrimental businesses?” Other ‘unique’ businesses which were included in the draft with additional regulations were tourist homes, farmers’ market, mobile vending, pawn shops, secondhand stores, special events and buskers. The draft bylaw also prohibits rickshaws and pedicabs. No specific date was set for the requested information to be presented or the bylaw to be back before council.

of about 35 people who packed council chambers. “It appears that Councillor Sean McIntyre advised you we were going to pass a bylaw that allows the operation of escorts and escort agencies.” She then assured residents “no one around this table is interested in allowing escorts or escort agencies to operate. “At any time an escort or escort agency can come in and we have no tools to disallow this. “What we’re trying to do is open discussion to the public to determine what tools can be put in place to protect ourselves, our community. “We can do nothing or we can regulate it. Our job is to protect

you.” Later McIntyre challenged Samson. “You asserted I mislead people. I’d like to offer the public the address I made.” He then read the statement he placed on his Facebook page on Friday. “Monday’s Sylvan Lake council meeting will address the new proposed business license bylaw that prohibits rickshaws and allows escorts and escort agencies. Public is welcome to attend. Meeting starts at 5:30. Now would be a great time to let your mayor and council know how you feel. Email: councilmembers@sylvanlake.ca.” McIntyre continued, “I’d like clarity on how I mislead people.” Samson replied

referring to “75 plus emails that ended up in my inbox” and noted some called her “an idiot”. “How can 75 people be on the same track, that we’re putting through escort services … In your job as an elected official you need to give people full information. “You threw this council under the bus.” McIntyre’s response was the comments were “not any different from derogatory comments received on other issues”. He then proceeded to request information on the draft bylaw with specific reference to the sections pertaining to escorts and escort agencies (see separate story).

Facts don’t get in the way of opinion This fall will see an engaged and interested electorate ready to make decisions on who should lead Sylvan Lake for the next three or four years. There are issues that will pique the interest of various groups of people, much as one issue seemed to galvanize a segment of the population who crowded into town council chambers Monday night. One thing will be the same, however. Information won’t always stand in the way of opinion. In this world of quick sound bites, made so necessary by the entertainment media of radio and television, and now becoming the trigger of rants through social media such as Facebook and Twitter, it’s frustrating to see so much energy devoted to comments where people lack the facts. We see the same sometimes in Letter to the Editor responses but not as regularly as we see it in other opinion exchanges. Perhaps because people have more time to think about what they’re writing before hitting the send button. If you read our stories earlier on these pages about Monday night’s council meeting, you will have seen that Mayor Susan Samson undertook to chastise Councillor Sean McIntyre for stirring the pot and provoking an avalanche of emails and social media comments on the escort issue. McIntyre’s post on his own Facebook page could be con-

sidered an innocuous request for residents to speak out about the issue. But we must agree with Samson that in an issue so volatile more facts would have been appropriate. The fact that councillors discussed the issue in November and the Sylvan Lake News reported it on the front page of the Nov. 29 issue (under the headline Regulations proposed to control escorts, escort agencies; other unique businesses addressed; changes to tourist home regulations) seems to have gone unnoticed by most residents. Following that story there was no sustained outcry in our letters column. One letter was received on the issue and the second a rebuttal and encouragement not to attack the messenger (town staff ). Besides those two comments we heard nothing else. But perhaps it was the time of year - everyone was in the festive spirit, busy attending all the seasonal events in our community. Now we’re back into the meat and potatoes issues of how our town is going to evolve. And there are less distractions for residents who truly care about the familyfriendly atmosphere that people have been working so hard to cultivate and nurture in Sylvan Lake. It’s a shame then, that those who chose to put keystrokes to messages didn’t take the time to find out more about the

issue before them. Then perhaps their venomous remarks may have been attributed to the source that could make a difference. In both the November story and in the council agenda package for Monday night’s meeting it’s clearly stated that the town is restricted to dealing with certain issues and can’t ban lawful businesses. If run properly escort agencies are lawful businesses. If, however, they become fronts for prostitution, as some have suggested, then it’s a legal issue and up to the RCMP to take action. Further, prostitution is a criminal issue dealt with under legislation created by federal members of parliament such as Earl Dreeshen and not at the local level. People doing proper investigation would have learned that escort agencies can now apply for a business license in Sylvan Lake and be approved without any further regulations. The point of introducing changes specific to those businesses in the updated business licensing bylaw is to provide regulations which are intended to make sure they’re operating as lawful businesses and not fronts for crime. The additional regulations, as well as higher fees for the

licenses, should be welcome news to our residents. They’re a positive and proactive way to discourage the types of businesses which some people fear. In defence of McIntyre, it must be noted that the council agenda, which should have been readily available for people to peruse and use as background before writing their comments, wasn’t available on the town’s website until after 10 a.m. Monday. (We looked at that time and it wasn’t there, but a quick email to the town had the oversight rectified within minutes.) The agenda item presented to council also talked about providing a four week period

for gathering public comments which could then be used by councillors in making decisions. While first reading of the bylaw was delayed for more information, we encourage people to do their investigation now, put together solid, sound, factual and well reasoned arguments that should sway the tide much more quickly than inflammatory comments made off the top of your head. Let the discussion and debate begin. This will surely be an interesting topic for weeks to come. As well, don’t forget the other types of businesses targeted for additional regulations, including tourist homes.

Shocked to read plans to close Sylvan lake access Dear Editor, Alberta has a limited number of lakes to accommodate its ever growing population and the need for recreational activities. Naturally, many Albertans flock to Sylvan Lake in the summer and winter for family fun and recreation of all sorts. With Sylvan being such a hot attraction for thousands of visitors from far and wide, we were shocked to read that Red Deer County had already passed first reading on a bylaw to close a popular lake access on Range Road 21 near the Summer Village of Half Moon Bay. There are already too few public access points around Sylvan Lake and we feel that this closure is short-sighted, irresponsible and does not represent the best interest of the people of Red Deer County, its neighbours or the citizens of Alberta. The increased demand for lake access suggests a need to upgrade, not close, this public access point.

When I contacted Legislative Services manager Nancy Lougheed at Red Deer County, to learn why they would even contemplate such a thing, she said, “Where Range Road 21 ends and meets the Sylvan Lake shoreline is not a boat launch.” It does not have proper infrastructure (ie washrooms, garbage, parking, etc.). The problem, she stated was overuse and abuse. As it is not set up for the amount of people utilizing this access, it is considered a safety concern for the people who use it, as well as a nuisance for area residents. It is basically a road to nowhere. There are legitimate concerns, but why is closing the road the only answer when so many people obviously use it, and have used it for decades? Although the lake access at Range Road 21 is not actually designed as a boat launch, for hundreds of people from around the province, that is largely

what it is used for. There are getting to be fewer and fewer access points on the lake for people to get out and enjoy family fun of fishing, swimming, boating, sledding activities year round on Sylvan Lake. Rather than being a road to nowhere, it is one of very few roads that allow people to get on the lake. Where will the people who do use it go now and in the future? They will likely have to drive several miles over to Sunbreaker Cove where the Lacombe County boat launch is already at over capacity. Lacombe County is doings its best to accommodate the users of that boat launch and alleviate residents’ concerns by putting in signs plus parking, garbage and washroom facilities. They have increased the capacity of the boat launch in order to decrease congestion and waiting times. Red Deer County should consider

lake access a shared responsibility between themselves, neighbouring counties and surrounding municipalities. You cannot stop people from wanting to access Alberta lakes. With increasing population and development, you have to find bigger and better ways to accommodate and educate to ensure all Albertans have the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful recreational opportunities this province has to offer. A closure of such a major access is wrong and will only increase problems around the lake. Rather, Red Deer County should be looking at the example that is being set by Lacombe County in planning for future growth and anticipating how to best serve its constituents and Alberta residents as a whole. Escort services will erode values, safety of our young people Dear Editor, I find it hard to believe that I have to write a letter like this. Most of the citizens of Sylvan Lake thought we were voting in good men and women who would protect family values in

this town. The beautiful walking trails and safe beaches have led me to believe that our mayor and council care about young and old here in Sylvan Lake. Bringing in escort services will erode the values

and safety of the young people of this town. I worked in a group home for troubled teens in Red Deer for six years. A lot of the girls and some boys were sold for a bottle of whisky or some drugs by people they

trusted. This led to confusion of who they were and if they were worth anything. A lack of self worth often leads to alcohol and drug use to cover the pain. That leads to stealing

to pay for the increased appetite for drugs. Peers look at their sisters, or brothers, and think that prostitution, let’s call it what it is, is glamorous easy money. Escort services are a snare for our young peo-

ple that serve selfish old men and women at our childrens’ expense! Our teens may think that by our adult example, prostitution is a good career choice. It is very destructive to any real relationship this person would try to

Dear Editor, Hello, I have a story to tell of how stupid some people really are. I moved to this area in 1989 to an acreage west of town, therefore my mail is delivered to a rural mail box. In 1991 my mailbox was pounded out of shape by idiots and had to be replaced. In 1994 both mine and my neighbour’s boxes were mangled again, both beyond any further use. So we built our own out of material not so easy to beat on and smash. Everything has been good for years. Then on Sunday night or Monday morning (Feb. 25) my mailbox was broken off its post and has vanished.

Now, I don’t know and I don’t care who the brain dead S.O.B. is who swiped it, but I hope they put it to good use. It’s made of quarter inch thick well pipe, 16 inches long, eight inches in diameter, painted safety blue with A. L. Martin welded on the sides and 1024A welded on the lid. Charged following fight outside Monkey Top Saturday, Feb. 16th 7:05 a.m. – A male is facing a charge of careless driving in connection with a single vehicle rollover on Range Road 23 in Red Deer County. The male was uninjured when the member arrived and was standing beside his vehi-

cle. He exhibited signs of impairment and was issued a 24 hour suspension. His vehicle was also seized and towed from the scene. 6:44 p.m. – RCMP received a complaint of vandalism in progress at the organized speed skat-

ing event on Sylvan Lake. Two males were spotted driving two dark coloured trucks on the tracks. One plate was obtained by witnesses and reported to police. The vehicles left the scene before RCMP arrived.

RCMP Notes Special to Sylvan Lake News

Sunday, Feb. 17th 12:01 a.m. – Police were called to a fight in the Bentley area. Witnesses contacted police saying a large number of people were involved in a fight outside the Monkey Top Saloon. When RCMP arrived, the group had mostly dispersed but one male was charged with assault after it was determined that he had struck his spouse in the face. He is currently facing a charge of assault. Tuesday, Feb 19th 1:54 p.m. – An incident of vandalism was reported to police after a male advised that his vehicle was damaged while parked in his driveway on 39th

Street in Sylvan Lake. Two of his truck tires were slashed during the overnight hours but no one heard anything at the time of the incident. RCMP attended but did not find any suspicious individuals in the area.

Friday, Feb. 22nd 11:24 p.m. – RCMP received a call of a domestic dispute at a residence on Jarvis Glen Way. When members attended, a female advised that her spouse had threatened her son but would not provide any concrete

details. A while later, police were called back to meet with the male who advised that he had been assaulted by the female who struck him in the face and the ribs. Further investigation has resulted in a charge of assault against the female.

Residents in a Cottonwood Drive home were awakened by a huge bang just before 4 a.m. Sunday morning when an out-of-control Chrysler Neon slammed into their front attached garage after narrowly missing a light standard, travelling across their front lawn, striking the pole of a basketball net and then a vehicle parked in the driveway before coming to rest on its roof. Charges of impaired driving, refusing to provide a breath sample and dangerous driving are pending according to RCMP Cpl. Kevin Halwa. Dear Editor, Poverty in Canada and in many areas of the world in an engineered process. It is not a requirement, it’s a process. Food banks, people freezing in dumpsters, it’s all engineered. It happens by all levels of government and it is done so knowingly by economists and finance ministers. Recently (Premier) Redford took lottery money, a revenue source that is taken from the addiction of the statistically proven less wealthy and it’s used to finance the hobby of the most wealthy. Now taxes will be raised and services cut. The most vulnerable will be affected the most. Municipal governments do the same thing when they hide increased taxes in user fees. They raise the fixed costs of water and sewer and garbage but they don’t balance it by an increase in the cost of consumption. The poor don’t fill their swimming pools or hot tubs, they boil spaghetti and take showers but they pay the same fixed costs for using much less services. In effect they subsidize the rich by paying a higher unit cost and use much less. The federal government uses the banking rules to ensure the least stable pay the highest costs for the use of credit. The federal government is the greatest creator of bankruptcy in Canada as it causes over 80 per cent of personal bankruptcies. Please understand that this is engineering

futility and it affects everybody. Futility causes so many social disorders and in reality nobody is safe from its affects. Random attacks, road rages, society stress. People trying to survive in a hostile system that is against them. Recently town council passed a budget to pay for the monster town hall, the $14,000 tourism phone booth, the $90,000 in wages for the two kids to sit in the booth for three months and is now planning on a multi-million dollar recreation center. There is a list in town office of the people who could not pay their taxes and their homes may be sold. My personal monthly costs of living and paying for my home in town have increased almost 400 per cent in 15 years. I moved to Sylvan Lake to escape high living costs when my home in the Devon area skyrocketed to almost $6,000 a year because of a new recreation center they built in Parkland County. I have asked town council not to build the center unless they can prove it’s self sufficient and does not require taxation support. It can be done if it’s done properly. I also hope people that care about lake access for the future support Lacombe County’s efforts to keep the existing Half Moon Bay access open and improve it. Please help to keep the lake public. Firefighters won blood donation challenge by Steve Dills Sylvan Lake News

Sylvan Lake Fire Department personnel won bragging rights on Saturday after winning a blood donation challenge. The firefighters challenged Sylvan Lake RCMP members to “a life-saving competition” to see

which group could bring in the most donors to the regular blood donor clinic at the community centre. Thirty donations were credited to the firefighters including six new donors, said Tanya Paul, community development coordinator with Canadian Blood Services, Red Deer. The RCMP were credited with 19 donations

including contributions from five new donors. Overall the clinic collected 53 blood donations. The target of Canadian Blood Services is 58 donations but since the Sylvan Lake clinic is so new Paul said 53 “is a really good number”. “As for new donors, 11 new donors — that’s amazing,” she said.

A new two-year collective agreement has been approved by employees of Sylvan Lake Lodge. The employees, who are members of Health Care and Service Employees Union, Local 301, affiliated with the Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC), voted in favour of the agreement. Members of the Spirit of Sylvan Yuletide Festival committee presented a cheque for $12,256 to Sylvan Lake’s Urgent Care Committee during their meeting last Thursday. The money was raised at the first annual festival Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. Making the presentation, in the front row, were chairperson Graham Parsons and treasurer Sue McCutcheon while accepting on behalf of the Urgent Care group were Teresa Rilling, Betty Osmond, Klaas Van Veller and Mayor Susan Samson. The music and drama departments at H. J. Cody High School are presenting the R o ge rs and Hammerstein musical comedy Once Upon a Mattress during six performances in the middle of March. All is not well in a fictional medieval kingdom where manipulating Queen Aggravain rules and her husband, King Sextimus the Silent, suffers from a curse that makes him mute. Their son, Prince Dauntless the Drab, is of marriageable age but the queen concocts convincing plans that eliminate any interested princesses. The whole kingdom waits in agony for

Dauntless to find a princess because no one in the kingdom can marry until Dauntless does. Just when they think there are no more princesses in the kingdom, and much to the dismay of Queen Aggravain, Winnifred the Woebegone swims the moat to try for Dauntless’ hand in marriage! Mayhem and shenanigans ensue on a rollicking road to happily ever after that forms the basis of the Tony Award-winning musical comedy Once Upon a Mattress, which is a charming retelling of the fairy tale “The Princess and Pea”. Casting for this production began in September and work began in mid-October to stage this musical

comedy fairy tale with lots of twists and turns along the way. The cast, crew, and musicians include students from grade 9-12 enrolled in Advanced Acting, work experi-

ence, or extra-curricular music. Students have been working on their vocal skills by being a part of the choir and special music rehearsals for the cast. Shows are taking

place Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Mar. 12-15 at 7 p.m. There are two shows Saturday, Mar. 16 (at 1:30 and 7 p.m.). The Friday evening perfor-

mance includes 50 of the 200 seats available for a dinner theatre as a fundraiser for the H. J. Cody Grad committee. The show is all ages but we recommend five and over.

Sylvan Lake has been recognized as a favourite waterfront destination by a leading magazine. Mayor Susan Samson said the town was honoured as the 2013 RV West Reader’s Choice Award for Favourite Lake or Waterfront destination in Alberta. “It was a surprise. I didn’t even know (the award) was even out there.” Samson said Sylvan Lake can expect a busy tourism season this summer. “Travel inside the province is on the rise and the RV magazine has a large readership, so we can be sure we will be on the list as a great place to stop.” “Residents of Sylvan Lake have always known how amazing our community is and what a privilege it is to live next to such a beautiful lake, but it’s certainly rewarding to know that others also recognize this,” said Samson. The RV West Reader’s Choice Awards is voted on by readers of the publication. Businesses and

destinations are nominated in more than 40 categories. The full list will be published in the March/April edition and online.

An extremely busy and successful week for central Alberta speed skaters came to an end when the Sylvan Lake Ice Marathon concluded on Sunday. Competitive and recreational races took place throughout the weekend, and followed the 24-hour speed skating marathon relay in Sylvan Lake on Feb. 17 and 18. “It was a great week skating,” said organizer Art Goelema. Events throughout the week raised $13,200 for the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada. Canada’s Lyndon Rush and Jesse Lumsden captured the overall World Cup two-man bobsleigh title despite finishing tied for fourth place in Sochi, Russia, Feb. 16. Rush and Lumsden slid just shy of the medals after clocking a two-run time of 1:54.41 in their first competitive test on the 17-corner track that will be used for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. “I have always really wanted to win an overall title, and this feels great,” said the 32-year-old Rush. “Big thanks to Jesse and Lascelles (Brown) for the great starts and to all the members of the team that worked so hard for this all year. The Sochi track is awesome. Everything about it is big and impressive. It is by far the nicest facility on tour,” he said in a Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton news release. Rush teamed up with two of the most powerful brakemen on the planet

in Lumsden and Brown to rack up two World Cup victories and four podium finishes enroute to winning his first overall title. Rush and Lumsden have six career World Cup medals together, including three victories, in addition to sliding to the silver medal at last year’s World Championships. Sylvan Lake Admirals have dug a hole for themselves in the Senior Mens AAA provincial playoffs, down three games to none. Over the weekend the Admirals lost twice to Bentley Generals who have only lost three times during the regular season and playoffs combined. On Friday night in Sylvan Lake, it was the Admirals who struck first, late in the first period. With 3:38 to go Paul Mailey from Aaron Boyer and Brendan Baumgartner in a hard skating effort. The period ended with the Admirals leading and shots on net were 14-13 Bentley. More great action in

The Admirals also lost Cris Neurauter when he made a huge hit against a Bentley player with two seconds to go. The hit looked solid to me but Neurauter was given a 10 minute match for intent to injure. Final score 4-0 Bentley. “We just didn’t get shots on net,” said Stephens “You can’t win games getting 15 or 20

shots on net and giving up four goals. The math just doesn’t work. No question we have had more than our fair share of injuries but tonight we played 50 minutes of hockey and Friday night it was 55, Bentley played

60 minutes both nights and were rewarded for their efforts. There is no magic here, to win it will take plain hard, grinding, never say die hockey for a full 60 minutes and maybe then we’ll get rewarded

Peewee female Lakers finished strong, begin playoffs Sunday by Darcy Rosie Special to Sylvan Lake News

The regular season ended on a high note for Sylvan Lake Scotiabank peewee female Lakers winning five of their last nine games in both league and provincial playdowns. The strong finish has the girls focused on winning the B side of the North Central Minor Hockey Association playoffs. A total team effort has brought the girls to this point. They continued their excellent play with a narrow 2-1 loss to one of the top teams in the league during their final regular season game Sunday. The Lakers were leading the game 1-0 over second place Camrose until the dying second of the middle frame. With play deep in the Lakers’ end the clock had expired, but a faulty buzzer didn’t sound the end of the period before the visitors scored to tie the game. The home team played valiantly in the final frame, but couldn’t muster another goal. Camrose on the other hand continued their onslaught of shots on goalie Kayla Rosie who stood tall until a goalmouth scramble led to the winning goal. Defenseman Hannah Goyan and Rosie combined to make several goal line saves before surrendering the final tally. The game was an example of the team’s transformation this year as they bent, but didn’t break, to keep the game close. In this game, Emma McNeil, more known for her bruising and solid defensive play, delivered a sweet pass to Carly McDonald who hammered home the puck for the team’s lone goal. Overall the forwards were strong as they played solidly through the neutral zone where Jaeden Simpson had several key plays clearing the puck and passing it up to her linemates. The other key element this year has been solid goaltending. The Lakers arguably have the best goaltenders in the entire league with veteran players Kayla Rosie

and Bronwyn Jones backstopping the team in tandem. Regularly outshot three to one, Lakers’ goalies are always in form keeping the score close regardless of how many pucks the opposing team fires their way. A bend but don’t break defensive group is led by team Captain Juliana Gulayets who quarterbacks the team breakout, provides much needed offense and is always first back to her end to stop the other team’s best players. Hannah Goyan is a ‘take no mercy’ player in front of the net as she provides some muscle in the defensive end which is one of the reasons she was named an assistant this season. Emma McNeil rounds out the defense and has been rock solid providing excellent work in both ends of the rink. While held off the scoreboard in the final game of the season, assistant captain Kadey Rosie has had a good season

offensively. She was just one point shy of finishing in the top 10 for all league scorers. Her strong backchecking and goal scoring prowess will be needed if the team hopes to have success in playoffs. Veteran player Emma Chamberlain has rounded into form and provides excellent board play as well as creative playmaking in the offensive end. Her size and strength will be an advantage throughout playoffs. Another veteran player, Jordan McLean, has proven to be a leader on and off the ice with her great attitude and consistent play each and every night which resulted in her nomination to assistant captain. Her soft hands and effortless skating stride are key elements to her game. Newcomer Carly McDonald has proven to be a spitfire on the ice and has steadily became a trusted penalty killer. She can be counted on to chip in offensively com-

ing up with key goals in big games. Sidney King has once again proven that she has a knack for being in the right place at the right time in front of the net and is a lead-by-example type player who takes great pride in improving her skills game in and game out. Jenna Lagoutte was a nice addition at the midway point of the season and her super attitude has earned her the coaches’ respect and admiration. She is always smiling and is really starting to elevate her game play as playoffs begin. Jaeden Simpson, a first-year player, has continually improved and has really started to get strong on the puck, making some key breakout passes and clearing the puck from the defensive zone. The Lakers head into a round-robin playoff format which will see them play Rimbey and Maskwacis for a chance to play for the consola-

Sylvan Lake Nauticals swim coaches Trevor and Sharon Burns took our six qualified swimmers to Sherwood Park for the 2013 Team Aquatics regional age group Trials, on Feb. 22-24, with the hopes of having these kids get their provincial A times in order to attend the 2013 Provincials in Calgary Mar. 1-3. All five of our girls who qualified for trials were in the 10 and under category. Asha Weaver got two personal best times with her best swim being the

100m freestyle taking a total of three seconds off. Avery Burgar had a great weekend getting a ‘B’ qualifying time in 50m freestyle swim and three personal best times. Eden Price had another amazing meet getting five personal best times; her best swim was the 200m Individual Medley in which she took off one minute and eight seconds. Emily Girard also had a super weekend getting three personal best times and making finals in two of her events. Her best swim was the 100m backstroke — in prelims she

took of one second and then in finals she took off another three seconds. She placed fifth in 50m freestyle, fourth in 400m freestyle and eighth in 100m backstoke. Zoe DeJonge also had a great meet getting five personal best times and getting ‘B’ qualifying times in both 100m backstroke and 100m Individual Medley. In the 12 and under boys age group we had our lone male swimmer, Michael Carson. This was a truly outstanding weekend for Michael. He earned four personal best times, set two new club records, was in finals for four events, and placed top 10 in five

of his swims. He placed tenth in 100m Individual Medley , ninth in 50m breaststroke, seventh in 800m freestyle. In the 200m freestyle he got a 11 yr old ‘B’ time, in 50m butterfly he got a bronze medal and a 12 yr old ‘B’ time. His proudest moment was in 100m butterfly in which he finished first in the finals getting the gold medal and earning himself a provincial ‘A’ time. Michael Carson will be joining the previously qualified Amber Carson and Elizabeth Moore in Calgary for the 2013 Short Course Swimming Provincials Mar. 1-3. Good luck to those three swimmers!

Western qualifier, Chase Murdoch (16), to Saskatoon for the four-day Western Canadian Championship meet on the weekend of Feb. 14-17. Close to 500 of the top swimmers, ranging in age from 12-45 years old, competed from 63 clubs in Western Canada and the Northwest Territories. Chase swam the 50m butterfly in 27.38 seconds moving him up a placing in the meet and up to fifth place ranking in Alberta/NWT for his age group! He also swam the 100m freestyle swimming a 56.48. Coach Trevor was very pleased with this as he took over a second off his seed time moving him up three placings in the meet. While Chase was in Saskatoon the club hosted a time trial on Valentine’s Day (held for kids close to their Meet Qualifying Times to get to regionals). We had 14 youngsters swim with most of them trying to qualify for regionals and we had three who accomplished their goal. Great job to Eden Price (9), Avery Burgar (10) and Asha Weaver (10). They joined Emily Girard (10), Zoe DeJonge (10) and Michael Carson (11) in Sherwood Park the weekend of February 23-24.

Alice Lenora Engman passed away on February 12, 2013 in Trochu, Alberta at the age of 100. Alice was born in Loreburn, Saskatchewan. She came to Alberta with her family at the age of 7 and settled on a farm south of Sylvan Lake. Alice married Carl Engman in 1934 and they lived on a farm at Burnt Lake. Alice and Carl had two sons Norman in 1937 and Allen in 1940.

WINTERS Lance Thomas 1953 - 2013 Lance passed peacefully on February 08, 2013 at the Foothills Hospital at the age of 59. He will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered by his wife, Karen; daughter, Angela Winters; two sons, Jason Winters, and Nicholas Winters; five grandchildren; two brothers, Vance and Perry and his sister Alesa Winters. Lance was born in Stettler and grew up in the Donalda area, where his parents (Alfred and Jewell Winters) farmed. Lance worked on the oil rigs before starting his own trucking company. He married and moved to Sylvan Lake, and continued to truck his remaining years. He loved his family and his job where he had many experiences and met many friends. Many will remember his handle “Casper” and his driven nature. At his request, there will be no Funeral Service. Alex and Alvina Wolf were named Spruce View’s Citizens of the Year during the 35th annual Spruce View & District Lions Club charter night, Jan. 19. The gala evening which featured the presentation, dinner and entertainment, was attended by about 80 people, said Lion Ray Stanton. The club has been presenting citizen of the year honours since 1981. Each year they seek nominations and a committee then reviews information provided or (if there are no nominations) seeks nominees before making a selection. The nomination of the Wolfs was made by Fay and Ed Schatschneider and John Stannard. Fay Schatschneider read a biography of the couple’s long service in the community during the presentation. Alvina Wolf has been a member of Craig Community Club for 45 years and served in many capacities. Under the heading of Cheer, she’s looked after sending cards for health, birthday and Christmas for all the seniors in the community for years. Involved in the community, she’s editor of the Alberta High School Rodeo Association newsletter and an enthusiastic supporter of minor hockey. Within her church community, Alvina has served in many capacities, visited and encouraged others to help when community members were sick or experiencing a loss, served on the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League at both local and provincial levels and received the “Service of Christ Award” for unselfish service from Alberta/BC Lutheran Church - Canada in June 2008. Alex Wolf was president of the rural electrification society for many years, was one of the original members of Burnt Lake Gas Co-op and served for 29 years, has been a minor hockey manager never missing a game, was one of the original group to fundraise and help in building Diamond Jubilee Recreation Centre, has been very involved

in the local high school rodeo association and assisted with setting up and working at local high school rodeos. He’s held several positions with his church and has been involved in all facets of church administration. Together the couple has volunteered at Stephansson House Provincial Historic Site and Historic Markerville Creamery. They’ve participated in community pot lucks at Fensala Hall, both have worked with the local 4-H horse club, and they’re always “cheerful and generous givers”. After reading about the attributes of being volunteers, Schatschneider said, “Alex and Alvina, you’ve show these qualities and so much more, so a heartfelt thank you for all that you do and have done and we extend congratulations on becoming the 2013 Citizens of the Year from your family and your community friends with whom you have served so generously. Alex and Alvina, you are extraordinary ambassadors of the community.”

At their 35th annual charter night, Spruce View and District Lions Club presented the Spruce View Citizen of the Year award to Alex and Alvina Wolf.
