Woman survives midnight plummet off road

Clear thinking and a strong will to survive kept 19-year-old Lillie Young of Marysville alive two weeks ago when her car went off the road and down the em-

bankment at McPhee Bridge. Lillie is recovering at home now, after a week at East Kootenay Regional Hospital, with injuries including a broken back, severe bruising, cuts and abrasions. The accident occurred

just after midnight on February 18, 2013. Lillie spoke to the Townsman/Bulletin this week about her experience. “I was at my friend’s house in Cranbrook and driving home just after mid-

night, maybe 12:30,” she said. “Right before McPhee, I skidded off the road. “I don’t remember going down the bank. I don’t remember crashing or rolling. I woke up in my car. I got that my car was upside down, but

I didn’t know how I got there. I remember crawling out. I squeezed out and my back was hurting.” The airbags had deployed and Lillie was wearing a seatbelt. She has injuries from both, but realizes it could

have been much worse if she wasn’t belted in. “I looked at my car and then I tried to find my phone but I couldn’t find it. It was so cold out.”

Deer cull complete

After 18 days of trapping, Cranbrook’s second urban deer cull is finished, the city announced Thursday. In a statement released February 28 by Corporate Communications Officer Chris Zettel, the city said that 24 mule deer were captured and killed: seven adult bucks, 10 adult does, and seven yearlings. Five whitetail deer were also captured, but released unharmed on instruction by the city and provincial wildlife biologists. The City of Cranbrook’s lengthy statement revealed information previously withheld from the public for public safety reasons when the second cull was announced February 14. The B.C. Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations issued a wildlife permit to the City of Cranbrook in November 2012, expiring March 15,

2013, allowing the cull of up to 30 urban deer. Some time after that, council held a closed meeting where it approved recommendations by the Urban Deer Management Advisory Committee. As well as approving the cull at this meeting, council approved the strategic locations where the clover traps were to be placed. These locations were chosen based on complaints about aggressive deer received in 2012, deer population counts conducted in 2012, and priority areas identified by the Conservation Officer Service. In early January, the City of Cranbrook approached four possible contractors who had expressed interest in conducting the cull. Two of those contractors submitted a quote, and one was chosen, though the city’s statement does not say who that contractor was.

A Cranbrook city councillor is speaking out against the process council underwent in approving the urban deer cull this February, saying that council’s secrecy “stirred up the proverbial hornets’ nest”. Councillor Gerry Warner, a former Townsman reporter,

apologized to the public for participating in closed council meetings where decisions about the recently completed second cull were made. “Whatever we decide, it must be decided in public,” said Coun. Warner. “So far we have hidden from the public eye and, like shadowy apparat-

chiks of some Third World regime, we’ve cowered behind closed doors and taken a bad situation and torqued it up into something infinitely worse. “I have been partly responsible for this and for that I here and now unequivocally apologize to each and every citizen of Cranbrook for my role in this

toxic mess.” Warner said that council agreed to hold its discussions in a private meeting because of alleged vandalism and public safety incidents that occurred last year in Invermere while the district was carrying out its cull.

Deer cull complete, City announces Continued from page 1 Council approved a budget of up to $15,000 to carry out the cull, which works out to be approximately $625 for each deer. This cost includes placement and tear down of each clover trap, purchase of bait and supplies, liability insurance, provincially mandated equipment training, mileage, vehicle cleaning, processing, packaging and distribution of the meat and administrative costs.

The cull began on Thursday, February 7, 2013, the city’s statement reveals, and was completed on Thursday, February 28. All of the euthanized deer were processed by a qualified butcher in a provincially approved facility, and the meat was distributed to two local organizations for human consumption. The statement does not say which organizations received the meat.

There were two incidents were members of the public interfered with the cull, the city said. The first occured overnight on Tuesday, February 19, when two clover traps were vandalized. The traps, which belong to the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, were placed on City of Cranbrook property. The heavy netting on the traps was deliberately cut, making the traps unusable. The cost

of repairs is estimated at $800 and the RCMP is continuing to investigate. In another incident on the evening of Tuesday, February 26, according to the city’s statement, the contractor saw a man standing on private property, videotaping a deer inside a trap. The contractor asked the man to leave the property. He did, but remained on the sidewalk continuing to videotape the deer. The contractor left, but when

he returned an hour later the man was still on the sidewalk videotaping. The contractor continued with his work, then left the scene. “Going forward, we look to work in partnership with the province through the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, in conjunction with the Urban Deer Management Advisory Committee, to secure additional tools to help manage the urban deer population in Cranbrook,” said Cranbrook Mayor Wayne Stetski. “Those tools could

include, but is not limited to the opportunity to undertake hazing, translocation and/or fertility drugs. We will also be exploring setting up a fund to help pay for some of these alternative population control methods, assuming they are approved, as they will be expensive. This will hopefully include funding from the province and by special interest groups. I look forward to beginning those discussions.” This was the second urban deer cull conducted in Cranbrook. In November 2011, Cranbrook culled 25 urban

deer – 11 white-tail and 14 mule – using clover traps. It was the first of three East Kootenay communities to carry out a cull. Kimberley culled 100 deer in January 2012, and Invermere was set to cull 100 deer in February 2012 before a court injunction put a hold on the plans. Eventually Invermere was able to cull just 19 deer before its permit expired. A civil suit between the Invermere Deer Protection Society and the District of Invermere is ongoing in B.C. Supreme Court.

VICTORIA – Premier Christy Clark issued a statement Thursday apologizing for a leaked internal document that describes using non-partisan government staff resources to improve the party’s standing with ethnic communities. Clark wasn’t in the legislature Thursday. Her statement was read by deputy premier Rich Coleman, promising an investigation to be conducted by John Dyble, Clark’s deputy minister and head of the public service. “The document did not recognize there are lines that cannot be crossed in conducting this outreach [to ethnic communities] and it is unacceptable,” the statement says. “The language in this draft document and some of the recommendations are absolutely inappropriate.” During an uncharacteristically quiet and sombre question period, Coleman vowed that the investigation would be completed and released quickly. Speaking to reporters afterwards, Coleman said the consequences could include firing of people involved in the plan, and he expects a summary of findings by Friday. The January, 2012 strategy document refers to “quick wins” for popu-

larity with ethnic voters, referring to a 2008 apology in the B.C. legislature for turning away a ship carrying Indian immigrants from Vancouver harbour in 1914. Advanced Education and Multiculturalism Minister John Yap said Wednesday that the government is planning an apology to the Chinese community for charging a head tax on Chinese immigrants in B.C.’s early years. Coleman said the B.C. apology, for a federal immigration policy repealed in 1935, has been in the works for more than a year and will likely still go ahead before the B.C. legislature adjourns March 14 for the provincial election campaign. The memo was distributed by Kim Haakstad, Clark’s deputy chief of staff. Recipients included Pamela Martin, the former TV anchor hired by Clark as her director of outreach, and Lorne Mayencourt, the former Vancouver MLA who serves as director of outreach for the B.C. Liberal caucus. The memo calls for a variety of strategies to improve relations with ethnic communities, including identifying supporters to contact ethnic media. “We had a lot of white small business people telling Chinese-Canadians the HST was good,” it states.

Survival instinct kicked in after crash by bridge Continued from page 1

Lillie says she had a vague idea where she was — she could see the bridge and figured out she was down the bank. At the time she thought she was on the east side of the bridge, though she would realize later she was on the west side. Her car left the road just by the old entrance to Shadow Mountain and came to rest on a shelf above the river. She couldn’t hear any traffic, and given the time of night she didn’t think there would be any. “I knew no one would find me. “I went back in my car. I was still trying to find my phone. The lights didn’t work, nothing worked.

“And I just thought, wait for morning. My mom always made me keep a blanket in the car. Thank goodness for that.” Wrapped in the blanket, Lillie went to sleep and woke early in the morning with almost frozen fingers. “I started to hear cars around 6:30 in the morning,” she said. “But I knew they wouldn’t see me. I would have done anything to get up that hill. It was so scary. I was thinking, ‘I’m going to die and no one will find me’.” It was at that point, Lillie says, that her survival instinct kicked in. “You’ll do anything to survive,” she said. “It’s weird to feel your pain go away — just get out,

get up that hill, find help. “I was on a shelf above the river bank. I just went. I didn’t look back at my car when I went up, I didn’t want to see. I didn’t think. I was monkey climbing, scrambling with hands and feet. I had cuts on my knees, my fingernails were embedded with dirt, but I couldn’t feel it because my hands were so cold. “I don’t know how I did it. Shock got me up that hill. I knew I’d be dead if I didn’t go.” She did make it up to the roadway, where she thought her ordeal would be over. As it turned out, several cars didn’t stop, though she was trying to wave them down from the side of the road. “I tried to stop cars. They wouldn’t stop. I was on the side of the road first, then I stood in the road. “I think I collapsed on the side of the highway,” she said. “I had two black eyes, I was scratched from the airbag, there was blood from my nose. But these cars just drove right by me. “I expected people to at least unroll their window and ask if I needed help. I’m not a very big person. It made me really sad no one would stop. “I’m just standing there on the side of the highway and so many people drove by me. It made me super sad.” As it turned out, someone did call the police about a girl being

Until a young man named Doug, on his way to work from his Wycliffe home, pulled over. He assisted Lillie into his car and wanted to take her to the hospital. She just wanted to go home. “He said I should go to the hospital and I finally agreed. He went and found my phone. I can’t believe I asked him to do that, but he did. “I called my parents, and I said, ‘Don’t be mad, I crashed my car’.”

We were all very lucky.” Both Lillie’s parents, Alan and Julia, say they are saddened that no one stopped sooner for their daughter, but realize that incidents such as the car jacking near Yahk late last year leave people wary. “Still, you think a few more might have slowed down, rolled down their window and asked if she was okay,” Alan said. “Maybe it was because they couldn’t see her vehicle.” The entire family re-

mains grateful to Doug for stopping. They have all spoken with him to thank him. Lillie is now recuperating at home. She broke her L4 vertebrae and has had surgery. She will be laid up for about two more months. Lillie says she knows she will get behind the wheel again eventually, but not now. “When we drove past the bridge when my dad brought me home from the hospital, I cried,” she said. “But I’ll drive again, just not now. It will be scary, but I’ll do it.”

Alberta skiers flee into cold when fire hits Panorama C anadian Press

INVERMERE, B.C. — A team of young Edmonton-area skiers lost their clothing and equipment but escaped unharmed when a southeastern B.C. resort they were staying at was hit by fire.

The group from the Rabbit Hill Ski Club was staying at the main lodge of Panorama Mountain Village near Invermere when flames erupted early Wednesday morning. Three local fire departments managed to contain the blaze

to the top floor of the five-storey structure and no one was hurt. Up to a dozen condo units were gutted and emergency officials say there was heavy water damage to the lower floors. The ski team was preparing

for the Under 16 CanAm Championships at Panorama this weekend. The group headed back to Edmonton and despite several offers of replacement equipment, the team says it will not be taking part in the races.

Pooled pension plan introduced for B.C. residents Canadian Press

VICTORIA — British Columbia has become the first province in Canada to create legislation for group pension plans to benefit the two-thirds of residents who can’t access such plans.

Finance Minister Mike de Jong introduced the Pooled Registration Pension Plans Act on Thursday, saying people are becoming more aware of the need to have sufficient means in retirement. While de Jong ad-

mits it’s not the flashiest of subjects, having enough money starts to matter more as people get closer to retirement. The plans would be managed by licensed financial institutions and focus on workers who don’t have a pen-

sion plan, including those who are self-employed. Workers whose employers set up the pooled plan aren’t obligated to get involved and employers aren’t required to match contributions.

The bill is part of a national effort to make low-cost pension plans available to millions of Canadians who don’t have other plans, and follows on the heels of similar federal government legislation.

Kootenay Music Awards seeks region’s best T o w n s m a n Sta f f

Kootenay Music Awards are back for a second year of celebrating our homegrown talent. Sponsored by the Nelson Brewing Company, and Black Press, the awards are currently accepting nominations for artists in every genre of music — from punk rock to folk bands and electronic producers. There’s also awards for the year’s best artist, album and song. “If you’re making music in the Kootenays and you have an MP3 you can send us, we want to hear from you,” said Chad Hansen, founder and president of the Kootenay Music Awards. A panel of music industry professionals will listen to every submission and shortlist the top four or five entries in each of the 10 categories. Then it will be up to the public to decide with their online votes which artists deserve the titles. The winners will be announced at an awards banquet at Nel-

son’s Spiritbar on May 10. Hansen said the contest provides incredible exposure for the shortlisted artists. “Last year, artists were getting 2,000 unique listens on the tracks up for awards,” he said. “It’s a really great opportunity for an up-and-comer or established artists alike to get exposed to new audiences in all of the communities in the Kootenays.” Last year it was Fernie’s Shred Kelly that went away with the coveted title of Artist of the Year, while Nelson’s The Automation was named best new band. Hansen can’t wait to see who will enter the competition this year. “There’s so much musical talent in the Kootenays,” he said. “There’s great bands just jamming in their basements or playing for the dinner crowd at local restaurants — we want to dig out those hidden gems.” With the help of Black Press

“There is some merit in this argument, but I have since come to the conclusion that whether the argument is meritorious or not, vandalism and public safety is an RCMP issue, not a council issue, and it shouldn’t have swayed our judgement in taking the public’s business behind closed doors. Once we retreated into our locked chamber, we lost control of the issue and the rest is history,” said Coun. Warner. Council did not live up to its responsibility, he went on. “We have not been transparent. And because of that we have lost most of our credibility on this issue with our own citizens, regardless of where they stand on the cull. And once again, we’ve raised our city’s profile outside of Cranbrook in a most negative way,” said Warner. He expressed regret that the city did not wait until Invermere’s civil suit over its urban deer

From now on, he will not participate in closed discussions about urban deer control, Coun. Warner concluded. “I’ve thought about this long and hard and if there is any attempt to keep the decision to cull or not to cull, if there is any attempt to make that in camera again, I will resist in every possible way I can.”

City of Cranbrook’s deer reduction project has been concluded council will review this year’s initiative, discuss with the province the additional options we would like to have to manage urban deer, and formulate a strategy on how to best keep the public informed in the future. “Council does have a role in ensuring public safety and in preventing vandalism, and we will continue to include these concerns in our decisions. We also need to secure additional sources of funding if we are going to see a different future for deer management in Cranbrook,” said Mayor Stetski.

How libraries blocked the FBI

t is called the ‘Library Awareness Program,’ and it remains one of the oddest things to come out of the 20th century. Although fairly benign sounding, the Library Awareness Program was a clandestine operation of the FBI—one which attempted to recruit librarians as ‘assets’ in their war against foreign subversives. Agents would simply approach anyone working at a library desk and ask if they had noticed any “suspicious looking foreigners,” and sometimes ask to see the library’s circulation records. There is so much wrong with this it is difficult to know where to start. First was the impossibility of determining foreigners from non-foreigners by sight, let alone just what constitutes suspicious looking activity. And second, the FBI was ill-prepared for the reaction of the library community, who battled with the FBI in the courts, the media, and in public, in— what CBS News called—“the unlikeliest fight of the year.” It began in early June of 1987, when two agents approached a clerk at Columbia University’s Mathematics and Science Library, asking him to “report on activities of foreigners” during his shifts. The clerk referred the agents to Paula Kaufman, the university’s head librarian. Kaufman informed the FBI that to help them would break one of the library profession’s most cherished ethics, not to mention breaking numerous privacy laws of the state. Librarians simply do not report the reading habits of their patrons to anyone. Ever. The agents were polite but wrote Kaufman off as a hysteric, one who felt what they were

doing was “atrocious… a violation of the First Amendment, etc.” What they didn’t expect was Kaufman to report her visit to the New York Times. An investigative exposé was published in September of 1987. Kaufman told the Times: “The FBI’s request to me to report on foreigners using our libraries is one with which I could not practically comply, even if our institution supported such cooperation, which is does not; even if MIKE’S such a request did not conBOOKNOTES travene my professional ethics, which it does; even Mike if it did not infringe upon Selby the First Amendment and privacy rights of all library patrons, which it does; and even if it does not violate the laws of the State of New York, which it does.” This predictably caused a ripple effect which no longer just outraged librarians, but civil rights and law organizations, educators, and privacy advocates. Documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act caused further anger, when it was learned that the FBI kept files on those librarians who refused to assist them, which turned out to be every librarian they approached. The entire operation was a sad throwback to McCarthyism and the archaic practices of J. Edgar Hoover. Yet the FBI remained not only committed to the program, but exasperated at the non-compliance of library personnel. “Why should librarians be off limits?” asked one operative, stunned librarians “weren’t cooperating with their own security forces.” The operative also expressed that without the librarians’ help, they left to “seek recruits only among pimps and

whores.” (Herbert Forestall, chief librarian at the University of Maryland, conceded that at least the FBI “distinguished librarians from pimps and ladies of the night.”) A Congressional hearing was soon called to investigate the Library Awareness Program. FBI assistant-director James Greer blamed “misunderstandings and misperceptions” by library staff which have blown things out of proportion. Greer was cut off by Congressman Don Edwards, who stated “I haven’t heard one word from the FBI to indicate that you have any appreciation for the special role of libraries in this society. The FBI should recognize that reading and books are special. Everybody in this country has a right to use libraries, and they have a right do so with confidentiality.” Greer continued to defend the program, stating: “In the 1970s, when we had this program, not one word was said about it. So I’ve got to assume that we did it properly and we got some information that was very helpful.” No one was more shocked than Congress to find out the Library Awareness Program had begun as far back as the ‘70s. President Bush formally requested the FBI to shut down the Library Awareness Program, but then director Sessions refused to do it. Libraries across America were left with only one choice—to draft crystal clear policies and procedures to protect their patrons should the FBI ever return. And the FBI did return en masse in 2001, with something called the ‘Patriot Act.’ Mike Selby is Reference Librarian at Cranbrook Public Library.

Heaven’s, you’ve had some practice, haven’t you? “Now David, look back and to the left, past the railcars and the once grand Moir Park hill. There is our graveyard. Do you see it? People of our little town are buried there. It’s a little rundown. No matter. There were wild circus elephants trampling about that graveyard just last year. Don’t look for them now, they are gone. Look, look to the north. It is a man with a camera. Pause — smile. Wait! Don’t smile. Look somewhat ... somewhat ... look somewhat the way you do. Excellent. Yes, perfectly lovely. “Now, look to the east. Beyond the many townsfolk gathered in the parking lot hoping for a mere glimpse of you. Look across the dusty, rutted road, to the left of the weather beaten buildings of Chinatown, past the rooming house, even farther to the left, on this side of the Cranbrook Hotel. Look to where that other fellow to your right is looking. Not the man standing at attention with the other men standing at attention for they are looking at you.

They are soldiers, you can bet. And you do like the occasional wager, hey. Those men fought for your father although, sadly, some of them are dead. Not the ones standing at attention, of course, but the ones that are not here. They are mostly in other graveyards that are probably in better shape than ours but those are graveyards that have not been desecrated by rogue elephants. That is our cross to bear. “Do you see the building on the corner marked ‘Zenith Café?’ In fifteen years from now the amazing psychic Madame Jeannette will sit in that little café and read fortunes. She will not read yours because you will not be here and she cannot be here now but if she could, oh David, what a story. What a story, indeed. “Madame Jeanette would sit you down over a cup of tea and perhaps an additional drop of something more to fortify because you enjoy a little dram now and again, eh, David. She would grasp your palm and study the lines and proclaim that you will one day be King of all the English Empire but she will frown because she will also see you falling in love with the American divorcee Wallis Simpson and that will definitely be a problem. A big problem. An insurmountable problem. You cannot marry a divorcee – American or otherwise — and still be King David, the church won’t allow it nor will the people much care for it. You will give up the throne. Abdicate in the name of love. Pass it all onto the reluctant shoulders of your brother Albert, who will not only lead us through another war and sire our present Queen Elizabeth but will have a speech impediment that will

A hallmark, to be sure. “You will become the Duke of Windsor, so Madame Jeanette would accurately predict. You will be appointed Governor of the Bahamas. Governor, David. Rather colonial and not quite the profile of a King but certainly worth a mention. So, too, there was that nasty business of the murder of rich Bahaman resident Harry Oakes in 1943 and the accusations that you may have been involved in a cover-up. “Sadly, David, if life was a copy-book yours would contain a few blots, eh? And then David, then all those years of retirement in France with your wife and those sweet little dogs. And then, to top it all off, in 1972, you will die, David, fourteen years before your wife, although quite possibly outliving

the mysterious Madame Jeanette, of whose later years we know little. “Now, David, this next bit is a little tricky. Some of the best sports action last weekend in B.C. took place in Cranbrook, with the hosting of the Pacwest Provincial Volleyball Championships at the College of the Rockies. The six best men’s teams and six best women’s teams in the province duked it out for top honours before appreciative crowds Thursday through Saturday. “We had spectacular crowds all weekend,” said Cori Andrichuk, Manager of Campus Life and Athletics for the College of the Rockies, adding that final attendence figures aren’t in. “But we filled the stands completely on Thursday night for both the women’s match and the men’s match, and the same thing for Saturday night for the 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. matches. “So we were probably upwards of 350, or 400 people, just for those matches alone.” The home squad — the College of the Rockies Avalanche — lost the quarter final match-up in a thriller to the eventual tournament victors, the Capilano University Blues, who at number four seed going ended up as upset champions. “It was a really good league this year,” Andrichuk said. “There was definitely a division between the top two teams and the bottom four teams,

but those bottom four teams were so close in the standings that it could have gone any direction — and it certainly did on the men’s side. “The boys (COTR Avs) had their opportunity, and unfortunately it just didn’t fall their way.” But COTR, the Pacwest league and the community all feel is was a great weekend of volleyball. “The community came on board, our sponsors came on board, and the atmosphere at the championships themselves was palpable,” Andrichuk said. “You could feel how excited people were. And I think there’s a better awareness that volleyball is an amazing spectator sport. I think it goes unnoticed a lot of the time, but there was some exceptional quality volleyball out there, and the people who saw the Friday match were treated to something you don’t see very often. “We’ve got nothing but positive comments from the travelling officials to the travelling teams to the Pacwest officials themselves who were in attendence.” As mentioned, the Capilano University Blues won the Men’s side, defeating the Vancouver Island University Mariners. The Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the Columbia Bible College Bearcats to win the Women’s championships.

Almsgiving: Being glad and generous people

e are well into the season of Lent, a time when Christians reflect more intentionally on our faith and our relationship with God. At the heart of Lent are three spiritual practices: prayer, fasting and almsgiving. I’ve written about prayer and fasting the last two weeks. Alms is one of those old–fashioned words we don’t hear much anymore. It comes from a Greek word which means “compassion, pity, mercy.” Almsgiving, therefore, is the act of giving food, money or other donations to those among us who are needy. We share our blessings with those who are less fortunate. At the root of this is an understanding among people of faith that we are not self– made men or women. Although many of us work hard for our living, it is also true that there are parts of our lives that come to us as sheer gift. We are able to prosper because of lots of “happy accidents”—the place we were born, the society we were born into, the influences of our early lives, our health, and so on. We had no control, or very little, over those things which allowed us to prosper. We receive these blessings gladly, and as people of faith, we share our blessings with those who are not quite so fortunate. In this sense, almsgiving is a mark of gratitude. We give thanks not just with our words, but with our actions. We share with others as a way of saying how grateful we are for the life we have been given. In past columns, I’ve called this “thanksliving”. We live as grateful people by sharing the wealth of our lives with those who have not been similarly blessed. We know deep within that we live together in community, and for us to be truly healthy as

individuals, we need to work to make the community more healthy. Of course, that’s not a religious act in and of itself. Lots of people live in such altruistic ways. Altruism is the practice of showing unselfish concern for the welfare of others. As such, it is precisely the opposite of egoism. And lots of people live this way: they deliver Meals on Wheels, or reach out as Street Angels, or help a neighbour by shoveling the snow from their sidewalk. People who live this way know that we live best when we care for each other. As the bumper sticker puts it, our society is strongest when we “practice random acts of kindness.” For those people who have faith however, it is a spiritual practice. We have a deep sense of gratitude to the God who has given us life, and who has blessed us in this life. We remember Jesus’ words that as we care for the least in our society— whether it be feeding the hungry, visiting the prisoner, housing the homeless, or any such act—we do it for Jesus. For Christians, Jesus is seen in the face of the poor, the victim, the marginalized. For us, therefore, almsgiving becomes a spiritual practice, a way of deepening our relationship with God. But there’s another reason to be generous in this way. In December, I wrote a column which talked about some of the research being done by Michael Norton from the Harvard Business School. He has devised some creative experiments in which he asks the common question, “Can money buy happiness?” Most of us would answer, “No, of course money can’t buy happiness!” But Norton’s research is showing that money can indeed buy happiness … but only as long as you spend

the money on someone else. It doesn’t matter so much how you spend the money. The most important thing is to spend it on someone else. Almsgiving, that ancient practice of the church, is being shown to have positive benefits aside from the spiritual benefits of such

practices. It is one of those things which religion has taught the world to be a very helpful thing. Alain de Botton, a committed atheist, has argued in his book “”Religion for Atheists” that it is entirely “possible to remain a committed atheist and nevertheless find religion spo-

radically useful, interesting and consoling.” He mentions such things as “Community … Kindness … Education … Tenderness” as well as the obvious things such as the art and architecture which the church has always fostered. The three spiritual practices in which

Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: I was just 18 years old when a routine doctor’s visit exposed off-thechart high blood pressure and landed me in the emergency room. As a carefree teen in my first year of college, I felt healthy and assumed it couldn’t possibly be anything more than a little stress. Even the ER doctor took a look at me and said he was sure there couldn’t be anything wrong. Imagine the shock when the blood tests showed I had stage-four kidney disease. I was dangerously close to needing dialysis or a kidney transplant, but I had no clue that I’d been suffering from a silent killer. Kidney disease often goes undetected because symptoms may not appear until the kidneys are actually failing. One in three American adults is at risk due to high blood pressure or diabetes, two of the leading causes. The good news is that early detection and proper treatment can slow the progress. My battle with kidney disease has turned me into a fitness guru and an advocate for kidney patients. I now do something active every day. By following a careful diet and working closely with my doctors to manage my high blood pressure, I have been able to prevent further damage. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and positive attitude can affect your medical prognosis in the best possible way. I can attest to it. Will you please encourage your readers to get their kidneys checked? March is National Kidney Month and March 14th is World Kidney Day. The National Kidney Foundation is urging Americans to learn about risk factors and get their kidneys checked with a simple urine and blood test. Particularly troublesome are the expiration dates that are at the bottom of a white box where the numbers are indented and also in white. The manufacturers would do us baby boomers a great favor by marking the expiration dates in an easy-to-read location, preferably in black ink with larger letters and numbers. Obituaries William Ewart Graham â&#x20AC;&#x153;Billâ&#x20AC;? 1925 - 2013 Bill Graham of Cranbrook, BC passed away peacefully on Monday, February 25, 2013.

Bill was born on the family farm near Bateman, Saskatchewan on March 26, 1925. He was an avid card player to the end, winning 2 hands of crib shortly before peacefully passing away. Bill retired as an Engineer from the CPR in 1985 and has since enjoyed 28 years of travelling, golfing, curling, and spending time with family and friends. Bill was predeceased by his loving wife Alice, in 1997 and his daughter Alice, in 1953.
