The driver of the Eastbound tractor was critically injured and was flown to Calgary Hospital at the time of the crash. On Tuesday evening, February 26, the critically injured man, a 62 yr old male from White Rock BC, passed away. The driver of the Westbound truck, a 45 yr old male from California, was examined and released from hospital without injuries on the night of the crash. The investigation of the collision is still ongoing, with speed relative to the weather and road conditions appears to be a contributing factor.

The focus has shifted from battling the flames to determining the cause of the fire that destroyed the top floor of 1000 Peaks Lodge in Panorama. “The Fire Chief and Engineers have been on site since early this morning conducting a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the fire,” says RDEK Communications Manager, Loree Duczek. “The investigation is currently focused on the unit where the fire originated and is expected to take until at least tomorrow morning to complete. The portions of the building that were not affected by fire and water dam-

age have been turned over to the Resort’s security team, who are gathering personal belonging’s and returning them to their owners.” Columbia Valley Rural Fire & Rescue Service Chief, Jim Miller, spoke about the severity of the blaze. “The top floor of the complex has been destroyed by the fire,” explained Miller. “There is also some fire damage to the fourth floor and the rest of the building has sustained extensive water damage.” Once the Fire Department has wrapped up its investigation, the insurance company and BC Safety Authority will be on scene conducting their own

Bennett,

On February 12th, Premier Christy Clark’s government introduced a visionary idea that we should all seriously consider – a BC Prosperity Fund that would ensure the bounty from our natural gas revenues is protected for future generations. A tremendous opportunity stands before British Columbia – the creation of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) industry. Successfully attracting LNG plants to northwest BC can be transformational for our province. Natural gas companies have already invested billions in natural gas development and predevelopment work for LNG. Shell, Chevron, Petronas (a Malaysian energy giant), and British Gas are already on the scene. The scale of just one of these plants eclipses the largest private sector investments ever made in BC. Projections by industry experts and finance officials are staggering in terms of the economic potential for BC. That means jobs and opportunity for our children and grandchildren – throughout BC. It also means a lot of new revenue to help make BC a better place to live. We could put this potential revenue into day to day government operations and watch the size of government grow, much like Alberta where they squandered resource wealth on bigger government. Or we can, as Premier Christy Clark suggests, steer new resource revenues into a Prosperity Fund that address

inter-generational equity - a fund that ensures that what we leave behind for our children and grandchildren is a stronger, better BC. One way we do that is to have the Prosperity Fund pay down BC’s debt, which would reduce interest payments, help make life more affordable for BC families, and enable greater investments in health care and education. Premier Christy Clark’s visionary idea opens the door to a broader discussion about the future of resource development in BC – new mining opportunities, growing our forest industry, and developing clean power with the Site C hydroelectric dam – and steering more of our existing resource wealth into a future-focused Prosperity Fund. Now is the time to talk about the idea of the Prosperity Fund. We need strong government leadership to realize this LNG opportunity. The BC government must be wholly committed to getting this done as we are in a worldwide race to meet Asia’s demand. While the first plant might not break ground until later this decade, the decision to proceed will be made very soon. Leadership matters and an election is coming soon. At this critical time, the BC NDP are sitting on the fence – afraid to commit strongly to LNG and all the steps necessary to realize this opportunity. Fence-sitting will not build these plants and we risk these opportunities passing us by. Slowing down the process in BC is just what our competitors in

Australia, the US and the Middle East want. BC is more than just natural resources, but our natural resources are still our ‘core business’. It allows us to dream big and to address long-term priorities like diversifying our economy and providing for future generations. Dreaming big also means opening more doors for First Nations economic opportunities and developing our resources with the best technology and in the most environmentally responsible way possible. We should be global leaders in how to produce LNG, and I believe we will be. These are important legacies we can leave for future generations. Our legacy is growing the economy and leaving a better BC for future generations, not taking the proceeds of resource wealth to simply grow the size of government. We have a premier who gets our core business and she has a vision how to turn that to our future advantage. The BC Prosperity Fund is exactly what we need to capture and protect the bounty from LNG and other natural resources. It’s a brilliant idea. This May, we have the opportunity to support a Premier who is demonstrating the leadership qualities necessary at this critical time. Her vision and determination is what we need to seize this opportunity now for future generations. Brad Bennett is a Kelowna businessman, director on the boards of private and public companies not-for-profit organizations, and former Chair of the University of British Columbia.

Lyme disease is in the Kootenays In 1975 a number of people contracted an unusual disease in Lyme, Connecticut. These people first developed a combination of fever, headache, depression and fatigue. Later, as the disease progressed they developed joint, heart and neurological symptoms. By 1978 it was known that the disease was caused by a tick bite but it wasn't until 1981 that the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi was identified as the causal agent. When bitten by an infected tick, the bacteria enter the blood stream and begin reproducing. This is called "early localized infection" and affects only the area around the bite. The classic sign of infection is a circular, outwardly spreading rash called erythema migraines which occurs at the site of the tick bite in most cases and people often experience flu-like symptoms at this time. Within days or weeks (sometimes years) after the bite the Borrelia bacteria begins to spread through the blood causing a variety of symptoms including muscle, joint and tendon pain, palpitations, head-

aches, mood changes and fatigue. Some people describe altered mental status as their only symptom. If left untreated (or inadequately treated) the disease my progress to cause severe and chronic involvement of the brain, nerves, eyes, joints and heart. Identifying Lyme disease is made more difficult given that the disease can cause a wide range of symptoms, developing over varying lengths of time and with variable severity. Diagnosis is further complicated by the fact that the testing done is Canada is inadequate and considered out of date in the US for many years. Additionally, many Canadian practitioners are not familiar with Lyme disease and patients are misdiagnosed as having Fibromyalgia or MS. In our clinic we use an American lab for testing and in the last year have diagnosed three people with Lyme. This is just the tip of the iceberg and many more in this area are affected. Appropriate treatment requires a variety of approaches often including long-term antibiotic therapy and supportive care to rid the body of the infection.

Jenny Humphrey 2013 Woman of the Year

said Cathryn Henley, Chair of the Woman of the Year Committee of the CFUW Cranbrook Club, “when the response from the surprised candidate is a shocked question wondering what special thing they did!” This was certainly the case for Jenny Humphrey when Gerry Sobie told her that not only had he put together a nomination committee for her, but she had been chosen. “I am so humbled by this,” she said. Humphrey was chosen by the Woman of the Year 2013 Committee

of CFUW Cranbrook Club because of the varied volunteer work she has done recently as well as in the past several years to improve the lives of its citizens, not only visually and emotionally, but as well as in educating the community through such things as the Cranbrook Guardian blog she was instrumental in getting off the ground in April 2010, and still writes for with other volunteers. Check out her full story on www.kootenayadvertiser.com in the Community section.

Jenny Humphrey, 2013 Woman of the Year, enjoying the countryside near Cranbrook. Submitted Whether you know her as a keen hiker, a master gardener, volunteer with Cranbrook in Bloom, the Arts Council, a teacher, the cofounder and writer for the Cranbrook Guardian, a member of the Citizens for a Livable Cranbrook, or just your neighbour, you will appreciate the hard-working, highly ethical ways and dedication to her

adopted community of 40 years that you have found in this year’s choice of Woman of the Year 2013: Jenny Humphrey. One of the letters of support for her nomination came from Tara Gillanders. She wrote, “…Jenny takes her (volunteer) commitments to the next level.” “We often know when we have made the best choice from the nominations we receive,”

Congratulations Woman of the Year Proud to support International Women's Day Ingredients for life

This special day International Women’s Day is an important occasion to stop and think about women’s fight for gender equality, for better working conditions, and even for the right to vote and participate in political representation. Birth control, representation

in decision making processes and in business management positions, and work and family life balance: so many obstacles are still relevant even after many decades of fighting for women’s rights. That makes March 8 an important date in the collective search for solutions that will improve women’s conditions around the world.

Here are a few tips to help you get started: PoSitioning and equiPment • Calculate the distance available between the screen and the seating area. Plan for a distance that is between 2.5 to 3 times the size of the screen, measured on the diagonal. For example, a 40-inch screen would require a distance from the chairs of around 2.5

In the back corners of the room, position your rear speakers a bit higher, around 1.22 metres from the ground. Put the bass speaker on the floor under the screen. All elec-
