The City of Grand Forks is looking into revising the policy for the use of James Donaldson Park. At the March 4 City of Grand Forks first committee of the whole meeting, a motion was passed unanimously to recommend to city council to research and develop a new policy regarding the ballpark’s use. Council acknowledged the importance and significance of the park to the city and the important role that it has played in defining the city for many visitors, as well as residents. “Yes, it is a gem,” Mayor Brian Taylor said, “and historically it has been a major part of the community’s culture. However, I think the time has come to look at resources like that and ensure that they are really paying their way in terms of the quality of life that we are trying to establish within this community.” The other councillors agreed. Coun. Neil Krog said that when the last rounds of improvements were made to the park, the reason the city wanted to undertake them was to make the complex more attractive to other potential users. “The idea,” Krog said, “was to expand its use.” He suggested in particular that the venue may serve the arts community. “We do not want to do anything at the expense of the GFI (Grand Forks International baseball tournament),” Krog added, “But rather as a supplement to it.” He said that increased revenue generated by multiple users would help ensure continued maintenance and improvement. Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Doug Allin commented that policies regarding the booking of the facility would need revision. Timelines need to clarified, he said,

so that dates when the park is to be booked for baseball are known well in advance. In addition, he said the buildings on the site might be booked and used separately from the field itself. Using the park for fastball, Taylor said, was a way of perhaps increasing the park’s utility. “The baseball tournament has been highly successful historically in the past but has been struggling in the last few years. On the other hand, softball, or fastball, whatever you want to call it, that sport has been going crazy, and though we do have playing fields around our town, we don’t have anything where we can stage a provincial class tournament, which James Donaldson Park would give us. It gives us an opportunity to make better use of what we have, a million-dollar asset in the middle of town,” Taylor said. “I would hate to see the baseball tournament disappear and I am wondering if there isn’t some way we could have both.” Before the park can be used for other purposes, Coun. Gary Smith acknowledged that the current restrictions on the park’s use would have to be revised. As of July 20, 2009, as stated in Policy 1201, no changes to the park’s configuration are allowed, including altering the pitcher’s mound. Smith remarked that it is possible to adapt the park to other needs and not affect the park’s value as a baseball field. He cited a number of professional ball diamonds, including Yankee Stadium, where the pitcher’s mound is added and removed as needed. Allin recommended that because of the necessity for a thorough review, no change in policy would be made for 2013, but that after public consultation, changes if required would be put into effect for 2014.

NEWS z CITY OF GRAND FORKS

The City of Grand Forks’ logo

City approves new brand logo JIM HOLTZ

For the Grand Forks Gazette

A presentation on the branding initiative spearheaded by the city’s Economic Development Advisory Committee (EDAC) for the City of Grand Forks was favourably received by the city council committee of the whole on Monday. Matt Thompson, the representative for Story & Co., presented a new city logo along with a series of sample advertisements for the city that paid tribute to the heritage and character of Grand Forks. The new Grand Forks logo is a simple design in black and white that Thompson portrayed as “timeless.” Reading from his presentation, Thompson said. “It gives credit to our past, is contemporary

for the present, and possesses flexibility so it can evolve in the future.” The sample ads demonstrated how the logo, along with catch phrases and traditional photographs, could be used to successfully brand the community. Most members of the committee felt that the simplicity of the black and white logo would make it flexible in its use and allow easy application to everything from signs to shirts and hats. The committee recommended that council support the presentation and endorse further public discussion and a motion was passed to accept the brand that night at the city’s regular meeting. Coun. Bob Kendel proposed the motion, Coun. Gary Smith seconded and council passed it unanimously.

z SALES TAX

Reverting to PST, GST to cost city between $50K and $100K JIM HOLTZ

For the Grand Forks Gazette

The shift from the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) back to the two separate taxes – the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the Provincial Sales Tax (PST) – is going to cost the City of Grand Forks somewhere between $50,000 to $100,000 dollars in the course of the year, according to Chief Financial Officer Roxanne Shepherd. “We can’t tell exactly yet, of course, but the total should be somewhere in that range,” she said. The reason for the increased cost to the municipality is that under the HST, the municipality would receive all of the federal tax paid for most goods and services back from the government, and 75 per cent of the provincial tax paid back. However, under the renewed GST/PST tax scheme, while the federal tax is still refunded, the provincial portion is not.

News tips

For example, Shepherd said that for a $100,000 purchase made by the city, the total tax paid under both systems would be $12,000 (five per cent or $5,000 to the federal government, and seven per cent or $7,000 to the provincial government). Under the HST, the total amount paid to the federal government would be refunded, as well as 75 per cent of the provincial tax for a total refund of $10,250. Now that the province has gone back to the GST/PST system, however, only the federal portion ($5,000) would be returned. In other words, a $100,000 purchase would cost a total of 101,750 with the HST and $107,000 with the GST/PST. Shepherd said that the additional tax will certainly affect the municipality but that all departments have been advised of the changes and will be taking steps to limit the damage done by the increased costs.

Derby donation The Wilgress Lake second annual ice fishing derby fundraiser took place Family Day long weekend and the cheques from the fundraiser were presented to the Sunshine Valley Childcare Society by Danny Williamson and Greg Sterling, the respective president and vice-president of the Métis Community Association (BMCA), and also Joan Holmes, the president of the Boundary All Nationals Aboriginal Council (BANAC). They presented cheques in the sum of $500 each to the executive director Fatima Faria of the Sunshine Valley Childcare Society for a total of $1,000, which will go towards enhancing the quality care for children with special needs.

z POLICE REPORT

Burglar grateful to be busted by Grand Forks RCMP

SASCHA PORTEOUS Gazette Reporter

On March 3, at 11:20 p.m., Grand Forks RCMP were conducting patrols on Donaldson Drive when they noted a vehicle parked in front of the Encorp Return-It Depot. “Members exiting the police vehicle could hear someone in the fenced compound in the back of the building and subsequently they arrested a local male for break-and-enter,” said Staff Sgt. Jim Harrison of the Grand Forks RCMP. The 52-year-old male was released on a promise to appear in court, where he will be charged with break-and-enter and theft. “He did state to the members that he was thankful they caught him,” added Harrison. “I guess he wanted to get caught.” Wintry roads cause two single motor vehicle accidents Wintry icy road conditions led to two separate vehicle accidents on Highway 3, Feb. 26. The first single motor vehicle accident was called in at 7:50 a.m., 29 kilometres west of Grand Forks. Harrison said a 56-year-old Burnaby man, driving a rental vehicle, came around a corner, lost control on icy roads and went down a (15 metre) embankment. The 2002 Chevrolet Ventura van did not roll

over and the male driver walked away with superficial injuries, including small abrasions on his forehead and left hand. The second accident was called in at 8:28 a.m., 30 kilometres east of Grand Forks. A female driver from Greenwood, 65, lost control of a 1997 Mazda pickup truck on a slippery section of the highway. “The vehicle spun out of control, travelled left off road across the oncoming lane of traffic and rolled over in the ditch,” said Harrison. The driver and a 66-year-old passenger, also from Greenwood, were both taken to Boundary Hospital with minor neck injuries. Both accidents were strictly related to icy road conditions and no charges have been laid. Single vehicle roll-over near Danshin Village Road, no injuries On March 1 at 4:28 p.m., a 38-year-old Grand Forks woman rolled a red Ford SUV near Danshin Village Road. The driver was travelling east with four children in the vehicle when she lost control at a corner and crossed two lanes of highway. The SUV hit the westbound ditch, causing the vehicle to roll. Grand Forks RCMP arrived on scene to find the vehicle upright on the highway with considerable damage, said Harrison. The road was bare and the cause of the accident has not been determined, but RCMP believe that speeding could be a contributing factor. The driver and the four children did not sustain any injuries.

z Our View

Re-implementation of PST a headache Many say the BC Liberals lied about introducing the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) back when Gordon Campbell was leading the party. There was public backlash and a referendum with the question, “Are you in favour of extinguishing the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax) and reinstating the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) in conjunction with the GST (Goods and Services Tax)? Yes or No?” Fifty-five per cent of voters taking part voted to extinguish the HST and subsequently, the Liberals announced that the PST and GST system would be re-implemented by late-March 2013. According to a release from the province, the final legislation and regulations for the PST are complete and are set to take effect on April 1. The public exercised its democratic right in voting in the HST referendum but it might’ve been better to stay with the unpopular tax. According to City of Grand Forks Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Roxanne Shepherd, bringing back the previous tax regime will cost the city somewhere in the neighbourhood of $50,000 and $100,000. The reasoning is the city would receive all of the federal tax paid for a majority of goods and services back and 75 per cent of the provincial portion paid back under the HST system. The switch back to the old system will have an effect on the city and Shepherd said that all departments in the city will be taking steps to limit the damage done due to increased costs. The provincial Liberals erred with the strategy to introduce the HST as many thought it was done in a sneaky manner and as a result, the public voiced its displeasure in numerous ways, including rallies. The backlash from HST implementation is even to have said to be a contributing factor to Campbell’s eventual resignation as premier. The HST was introduced the wrong way but it has been in effect for about three years and people are used to it. Taking it out now and reverting to the old form will be costly.

Do you like the City of Grand Forks’ new meeting format, which will see a committee of the whole meeting in the morning?

YES 45%

NO 55%

I drove into Grand Forks for the very first time on Sunday evening and I was relieved to see tree-lined streets and no towering skyscrapers. Sure, Grand Forks is a lot smaller than Vancouver, which is where I come from, but I am eagerly optimistic about my future here. The Grand Forks Gazette has been kind enough to hire me on as its new reporter. I just graduated from a two-year journalism diploma program at Langara College in Vancouver and this will be my first kick at the can as a fulltime journalist. It’s a big change to be here. My first day on the job was Monday and I thought I should give myself plenty of time to get to work, so I left half an hour early. I guess I’m still used to

z Porteous Profiles

SASCHA PORTEOUS

Vancouver, where getting to school took me 45 minutes in rush hour traffic. Needless to say, it only took me five minutes to drive through town, so I was 25 minutes early for work. I guess I won’t be fighting rush hour traffic anymore. I grew up in a small community on Vancouver Island, so I think this new move will be a perfect fit for me, my girlfriend and our soon-to-be-born baby. Seeing as how I will be the only reporter, I’m sure to cover a lot of different stories

and events, from school board meetings to Grand Forks Border Bruins’ hockey games down the road. But I’m going to be honest. At this point I don’t know much about Grand Forks. My knowledge of this town comes from what I have read on Google. So I’m going to try and introduce myself to everyone and do a little of my own research by talking to everyone and asking lots of questions. If you see an average height male in his mid-20s, (well actually more like late-20s) with a note pad, camera bag and tape recorder, hopelessly wandering through town, it’s probably me. And please don’t be alarmed if I introduce myself as the new reporter in town, Sascha Porteous.

LETTERS z MIDDLE EAST

Issues with Israel Editor: Re: Make a balanced argument (letter, Feb. 20 issue) Mr. Bevan’s claims that I stated, “Israel is responsible for all of the problems in the Middle East.” Where did you read that? I clearly stated that Israel is and historically has been an instigator in many of the military conflicts in that area of the world and I stand by that. I didn’t bring religion into this argument as Bevan has. In Israel’s 64 years of existence, it has been involved in, if not initiated, no less than eight full-on armed conflicts, from Egypt to Lebanon to Syria to Palestine etc. Mr. Bevan begs for more of a balanced argument. I beg for open, unbiased investigation. He made no mention of Israel’s refusal to sign on to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, no mention of Israel bulldozing villages to build settlements deemed illegal by the UN No mention of a vastly superior military power serving upwards of 180 airstrikes into Gaza during the last conflagration. These are not strikes carried out with homemade rockets but Hellfire and Sidewinder missiles launched from stateof-the-art aircraft into densely populated civilian areas. No mention of the use of white phosphorus munitions, banned under the Geneva Convention.

No mention of the admitted state-sponsored assassinations of duly-elected Palestinian officials. No mention of the fact that Israel has literally turned Palestine into an outdoor prison, complete with military checkpoints, massive concrete walls and Israeli-controlled movements of the everyday Palestinian citizens. No mention of massive unemployment, destroyed infrastructure, sanctions, marine blockades and outright attacks on international aid boats trying to assist the Palestinian people! Once again, why does the West support Israel to such a degree? Why do our tax dollars subsidize an already rich and powerful country when our own part of the world continues to suffer a growing variety of economic and social ills? We must cease supporting aggression, period. There is no excuse for this myopic militaristic support, none! Mr. Bevan wants me to be more balanced, I would request that he be more informed and less biased. Ben Sorelenson, Grand Forks

z ENVIRONMENT

The lost dream Editor:

Re: Eco-system is not a supermarket (letter, Feb. 20 issue) Margaret Steel’s recent letter in the Gazette is a sad reminder to the small group of citizens who know and care about renewable resource management, that sustainable scientific

z OPINION driven management is clearly a lost dream. The area in question in the Lynch Creek drainage is being logged adjacent to the Class A Gladstone Provincial Park primarily because the Boundary forest has been over logged, a point well known by everyone at the top of the logging chain of command. The participants at the 1994-96 Kootenay/Boundary Commission on Resources and Environment, who supported parks, recognized that both Granby and Gladstone Park proposals were too small to ensure their ecological viability and therefore the proposed Special Management Areas on the flanks of both parks were critical. The rationale for special management areas was to allow industrial activity but with a much lighter foot, an argument consistently opposed by the uber-right who wailed and gnashed their teeth every meeting in opposition to the concept of dramatically increasing the province’s protected areas to 12 per cent of the land base as recommended by the Bruntland Commission. Close to 20 years on, business interests run the show with predictable results; our forest has been over harvested, wildlife populations have been compromised for decades if not forever, cows live in all our rivers and streams contrary to lessons learned from Walkerton, Ont. Is it possible to reverse this god-awful mess or is this the true Canadian character? After all, greed rages in society. It probably depends on how many people look in the mirror and don’t like what they see. Barry Brandow, Grand Forks

Economic development in the Grand Forks area The information package for the regular meeting of the Grand Forks city council on Jan. 21 contained an interesting report. It’s titled, “Grand Forks Economic Development AdvisoROY RONAGHAN ry Committee (EADC) Strategic Planning Report for 2013,” prepared by John Singleton from Singleton Consulting Corporation, the facilitator for the planning session involving seven people, including two councillors, Gary Smith and Bob Kendel. There were several reasons for meeting: clarifying strategies, defining a focus for the next two years, developing an understanding of the work of an economic advisory committee and how it might change the local situation, laying out a path for the city to follow, developing a clear picture of the end results of the committee’s work and clarifying the EDAC’s place among other community groups. Residents of the region are likely to be most interested in the group’s response to the question, “What does economic development mean to this committee?” A long list of answers was forthcoming and a few of them are: sustainable agriculture; be a locovore (100 kilometre user); grow it, process it, sell it here; reduce the economic leakage; create an economic base that grows; have all businesses non-polluting; build the population to 5,000 locally and 12,000 regionally; keep young families in the region through the provision of health care, education, lifestyle, technology, transportation and housing. An essay by Brenda Crain found on the website Resilience.org bears the title “Opportunity is Local (Or: You can’t buy a new economy).” Crain presents an interesting perspective on creating economic opportunities. Crain states, “Neighborhoods need to define their priorities for themselves; in so doing, they often discover that there are untapped opportunities to grow their own local economies, without needing to import talent from elsewhere.” The late Jane Jacobs said, “The best cities are federations of great neighborhoods.” Perhaps Grand Forks would be best to form a federation of neighbourhoods for there are several, yet they are ignored when it comes to the work of planning for its future. The EDAC report should leave its readers wondering whether the committee asked the right critical questions • Why is an economic development advisory committee needed? Who is being advised? • What assumptions had each committee member made about the city before they began working together? • Why must the population of the city and region grow? • Why do young people not stay in the community? • Why is sustainable agriculture of such importance to the future of the city? • Why is the airport important to the city and region? • Why did the committee choose the term “revitalization” when the city council used the term “rejuvenation” during their planning session in January 2012. • What kind of city can we design and build that will fulfill the “revitalization” requirement? The EDAC report can only be seen as the work of seven wellintentioned people, hardly enough to truly represent a broad cross-section of the community. The EDAC report is a good start on a complex issue but it is far too broad in scope to be useful as a planning document although it contains many good ideas. It is a good beginning but it is only the result of a one-day brainstorming session. Creating a workable plan with goals, objectives and strategies will require many more meetings. Crain provides some good advice when she states, “To really grow an economy, opportunity has to be developed organically within each community, and that requires that people dig in and improve their neighborhoods, together, for the sake of doing so— not convincing Google to open a new office down the road.” Such advice will be difficult to follow. – Roy Ronaghan is a columnist for the Grand Forks Gazette

Teachers and SD51 work to improve literacy

JIM HOLTZ

For the Grand Forks Gazette

Twelve local Kindergarten to Grade 3 teachers in School District 51 (SD51) are working hard on a new program to improve literacy. Under an initiative funded by the Ministry of Education and implemented by Superintendent of Reading Maureen Dockendorf, the teachers have been working since August in a program called Changing Results for Young Readers. Hutton Elementary School Principal Doug Lacey is enthusiastic about the program. Teachers are already talking about the improving attitudes toward reading and learning that the program has sparked, Lacey said. The program began with a variety of presentations and workshops for the volunteer teachers on the latest information about literacy, including sessions on encouraging self-regulation in students and using inquiry-based research in their teaching practices. The latter formed the basis for the entire program, Lacey said. “Every teacher who has volunteered selects one child in their classroom whom they felt the program could really make a difference in their learning. Usually the child is one who has been struggling to meet expectations in reading and writing. Then they come up with an inquiry question: ‘What if I do this?’ A practice or strategy based on a literacy concept,” he added. The specific practice is then initiated

and each teacher carefully monitors the effect that it has on the selected child and the class as a whole. A series of meetings takes place throughout the year involving all the volunteer teachers. “The teachers come to a meeting after they have done the intervention work based on their inquiry question and we have a discussion on what they see related to the child’s development. Then they write it all up in a case study, keeping track of all the changes. These are all written up across the province in the same way. The identities of the children are never revealed, of course,” he said. Each study is updated six times, Lacey said, and all the reports emailed to a woman who makes a chronological record of all 450 students across the province. “Each study on each child becomes a research narrative based on the inquiry based question,” he added. “The idea is that if you go through these processes with one child, all the children in the class will benefit because you are basically doing it with the entire class with this child in mind.” Once complete at the end of the school year, teachers will have access to all the case studies and can use them as a source of best practices to incorporate in their own classrooms. Lacey sees this program as an important tool in assessing literacy in the district, one that can supplement the other tools currently in use, including the Foundation Skills Assessment standardized test. “Teachers (in this program) are talk-

ing about the self confidence or lack of self confidence that a child has in tackling literacy. That is something that cannot be seen on a standardized test. The teachers relate how, now, a child is willing to read in front of the class, willing to tackle new words when the class is working on phonics, and I think that may be the most important piece,” he said. Self-confidence in education is regarded as important in the shift in education toward individualized instruction and personalized learning.

“One of the most important shifts in education is the acceptance and even celebration of the differences in learning rates in children,” Lacey said. “Teachers and administrators see over and over again that students who struggle in the early grades because of differences in learning rates have caught up to the generally held expectations by Grade 7.” The district received $27,000 to fund the first year of the program’s implementation. Lacey hopes the funding will continue in the future.

Boundary school district primary teachers work hard to develop teaching strategies at a Changing Results for Young Readers workshop.

The Boundary Woodworkers Guild is joining forces with the Boundary Habitat Stewards and the City of Grand Forks to increase awareness around bats and to provide summer houses for our local bats! There are many misconceptions surrounding bats, that negatively label them as pests but these creatures are one of the most magical creatures in the world. Their many unique characteristics include the use of echolocation for hunting, being true hibernators, and are the only mammal that has the ability of flight. Most bats will have only one pup they raise each year. These beneficial friends are great for pest control with the average bat eating up to half its weight in mosquitoes each night! With the provincial election fast approaching, Grand Forks’ Mayor Brian Taylor has officially entered the Boundary-Similkameen NDP candidate race. The BC NDP announced nominees for the vacant Boundary-Similkameen candidate spot late Monday night and according to BoundarySimilkameen NDP President Dave Ligertwood, the nominees so far are Taylor, Rhonda Bruce from Oliver and Sam Hancheroff from Kaleden. There could be more nominees however, as the deadline for additional candidates to seek nomination is this Friday (March 8) at 5 p.m. The position became available when former NDP riding candidate Marji Basso stepped down from the provincial race in January for personal reasons. Bruce and Taylor were the people running for the Boundary-Similkameen position that eventually went to Basso in 2011. The nomination meeting to select a candidate will take place on Saturday, April 6 with the location to be announced later. Taylor previously said there is nothing preventing him from being the MLA in the riding and retaining the mayorship (should he win the nomination and the election) but he told the Gazette that he wouldn’t take both positions. “I don’t think anyone would expect me to do both jobs,” Taylor recently said.

INCOME TAX RETURNS DIY or take it to a professional? Christine Brooks Bookkeeping Service

Tax Returns E-File Agent

Unfortunately, nobody gets off the hook. Every year, we must do our civic duty and declare our income. While some of us prefer to sit down and struggle with all those little boxes and blanks as best we can, others simply entrust the task to tax specialists. So just when, exactly, is it worthwhile to ask a tax professional for help? That depends on the complexity of your situation. Do you rent your home and have only one job? Are you single, with no dependents? If figures don’t scare you and you are aware of tax laws as they apply to you, filling out your return by yourself is a challenge you can probably navigate through. Do be careful, though. It is possible to make costly mistakes with the tax system the way it is, and a small oversight in your income tax return can cost you hundreds of dollars. Because of this, it can be quite useful to look for help beyond your income tax software program. A bookkeeper or accountant can advise and guide you through the process, pointing you toward tax deductions that you might not have even been aware of. For any kind of financial situation more complicated than that, it is definitely worth handing over your tax file to a professional. An accountant is the best person to help you benefit from all the deductions and credits for which you are admissible. It is also possible to use the services of a bookkeeper or tax return specialist. Just remember to be vigilant and not put your trust in anyone who can’t offer good credentials and references or membership in a professional association. Completing an income tax return requires divulging personal information, such as your social insurance number, address, and annual income, so it is essential to make a wise choice.

I can give you the answers you need to move ahead with past due tax returns.

The Employment Program of British Columbia is funded by the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia.

A Grand Forks native needs her hometown’s help to become a video jockey (VJ) for Canadian music channel MuchMusic. Desiree Mark, daughter of Grand Forks residents Bruce and Debbie Mark, moved to study fashion design in Vancouver six years ago and thinks she has the right stuff for MuchMusic’s VJ Search 2013 contest. People can learn about the competition and vote for and rate her entry at www.muchmusic.com/vjsearch/profile/desiree-mark/336863 – the competition is actually judged by people from MuchMusic but positive feedback will aid Mark’s cause. “I’ve been involved with music for as long as I can remember,” Mark explains. “I never actually played music – I had a little stint trying to learn the guitar for a while but Heaven forbid, it was horrible.” She says she has been involved with concert photography and music has always been a big part of her life. “Whether I’m singing in the shower in the morning or going and checking out a local concert at night, it’s always been something I’ve needed to have around me,” Mark says, adding that she started her own music media website (www.remembermedia.ca) when she was 13. “Since then, I’ve been photographing, doing interviews, reviewing albums and basically doing what MuchMusic does but on a smaller scale,” she says. While currently residing on the coast of B.C. and aiming at a move to Toronto if she wins the gig with MuchMusic, Mark explains that growing up in Grand Forks aided in her development. “I feel like it gave my imagination the time to grow,” she says. “Growing up in Grand Forks, you don’t have all the crazy stuff that distracts city kids, so you get to be creative with things. Instead of spending a day at the mall, I would

be setting up little photo shoots with my friends and making movies of us. It gives you the chance to really grow.” Mark said that because of that environment, people get to grow up being exactly who they want to be and while she hasn’t won the contest yet, she does have a dream interview in the event she is selected the winner – Lady Gaga. “I’ve always been inspired by her and because I do come from a background in fashion – that’s what I actually have my degree in is fashion design – so her fashion and style is inspiring,” Mark explains. “I’ve had the opportunity to see her in concert and she’s just an amazing and inspiring woman; just the way she talks, she just such a well-spoken artist who genuinely loves her fans. I would like to see some of her clothes up close.” The contest closes on March 10 and people are allowed to vote multiple times but only once a day.

Sunday, March 17th, 2013 10:30 a.m. Tzachi will set a table with items traditionally used at the Passover meal and detail their spiritual significance. He will also explain the connection between the events of the first Passover in Egypt and the redemption that Jesus accomplished, as well as the deep bond between the ancient Passover feast and the Christian communion celebration today.

Brickner, a fifth-generation Jewish believer in Jesus, succeeded Rosen as Executive Director in 1996. Brickner has kept “Jews for Jesus” on the cutting edge as the ministry has expanded and established branches in 13 countries, including the United States, Brazil, Israel, Russia, France, and South Africa, along with 2 offices in Canada (Toronto, Montreal).

“Jews for Jesus” has presented “Christ in the Passover” at over 38,000 churches. It has been enthusiastically received by Christians who appreciate learning more about the Jewish backgrounds of their faith.

“We exist to make the Messiahship of Jesus an unavoidable issue to our Jewish people worldwide,” Brickner states. “There are still a few that haven’t heard of us!”

Moishe Rosen, who founded “Jews for Jesus” in 1973, has also co-written the book, Christ in the Passover, with his wife, Ceil. This seminal work includes a look at Passover in ancient times and how it is practiced today. It will be available after the presentation. Also available will be a DVD of the “Christ in the Passover” presentation with David Brickner, the executive director of “Jews for Jesus”, officiating.

The perfect retirement lifestyle Seniors want it all: a comfortable home, independence to follow their own schedule and maintain their own interests, safety and security, delicious food and the company of others. And who can blame them? Not long ago, seniors had limited housing options, and few met all of their needs. But this fall Silver Kettle Village opened its doors and a new style of seniors housing opened in Grand Forks, providing today’s seniors the opportunity to experience retirement living at its best. Silver Kettle Village is a well-crafted seniors’ community boasting 48 beautiful suites ranging from studios to one and two bedroom layouts. These maintenance-free living suites incorporate supportive features to promote independence and 24-hour emergency monitoring service for added peace of mind. Kitchens include a fridge and stove and each suite is equipped with its own personal heat and air conditioning controls. Beyond the suite is access to a variety of common areas which include a games room, spa room, library, dining room, coffee room, crafts room, hair salon and lounges. All areas are easily accessible, full of interesting people, engaging activities and share a wonderful sense of community. Hospitality services at Silver Kettle Village are included in

the affordable monthly rent and include weekly housekeeping, a wide selection of recreational and social activities, 24 hour emergency monitoring, shuttle bus service, and hot, delicious meals prepared by on-site chefs. And each meal is served by cheerful wait staff in a central dining room, with a cozy fireplace where guests and families are always welcome. In addition to the hospitality services, residents can enjoy peace of mind knowing they don’t have to worry about extra bills because all utilities including water, sewer, heat, air conditioning and cable are also included. What’s more, Silver Kettle Village’s convenient location enables seniors to easily maintain their relationships with friends and family. And at Silver Kettle Village pets are a big part of the family. In this pet friendly building residents are encouraged to bring their pets with them to live. Free from the responsibilities of home-ownership, seniors at Silver Kettle Village can enjoy the many other activities and joys that life offers. We’re fortunate to live in a time when retirement living options provide everything seniors want – and more! Silver Kettle Village is open daily; and you can call (250) 442-0667 for more information or to book a tour.

Once again, movie lovers, I have been witness to superb acting, a very difficult subject and the range of human emotions. I am talking of the movie Amour, the Spotlight Films movie screened recently at the Gem Theatre, a story of companionship, devotion, humour and the journey into old age. I am unfamiliar with both actors (Jean-Louis Trintignant and Oscar-nominated Emmanuelle Riva) but what a wonderful job they both did. The story revolves around Anne (Riva), who suffers a stroke and is paralyzed on one side, and Georges (Trintignant), who vows that she won’t have to endure further hospital visits or be put in a home. The ordeal that both go through is trying. Being a European movie, the feeling was quite differ-

ent. No music to make hearing difficult; no shooting, as in so many of our modern movies. In fact, there were many long pauses in this movie that sometimes one wondered if the reel was stuck! There are some decisions in life that are very difficult to make and this fine film depicted a few of those. I noted that the Academy did not give any awards to this film, too bad really. I am constantly amazed at the calibre of films being made recently, the wonderful acting, the harrowing tales etc. A joy to behold if one likes the movies.

This is the second Spotlight movie I have seen recently that is set in Paris, a wonderful coincidence maybe. The film has flashbacks and if you are going to this film at any point, do watch the opening scene carefully. I do appreciate this chance to go to our wonderful Gem Theatre and take in movies that are chosen by the group, they choose very well indeed. This film has won some European awards and I am not a bit surprised by that. It will be a while before the movie arrives in stores I think, but with modern television links, one can maybe find it somewhere, I do hope so. – Liz Martin is a film critic for the Grand Forks Gazette, a movie lover, cello player and happy retiree

It’s all fun and games at Perley Left: Miles Semenoff (Perley Grade 6 student on left) and Tori Stavenjord (Perley alumnus) worked one of the stands at Perley Elementary School’s fourth Family Fun Night fundraiser on Feb. 28. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Friday snow slide closes off Highway 3

Come & find out what we’re so excited about at Habitat Boundary We’d love to see you there!

Monday, March 11, 2013 7:00 pm at the Gospel Chapel 7048 Donaldson Drive, Grand Forks

A snow slide closed off a section of Highway 3 near Christina Lake on Friday. “The RCMP received information of a snow slide on Highway 3 near the bottom of Cory Hill approximately 20 kilometres east of Christina Lake, which closed the road in both directions,” said the RCMP’s Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment’s Sgt. Darryl Little at the time. Melting snow was cited as the cause of the slide and Little said it was estimated to be about 91 centimetres (three feet) deep – no vehicles were trapped or damaged during the incident. The slide was reported at about 3 p.m. and Emcon Services Inc. arrived on the scene and the road was cleaned up and open for travel about 3:30 p.m.

Boundary Musical & Theatre Society’s production of Annie Get Your Gun

This time, good people of Grand Forks, I went to see musical theatre instead of a movie, Annie Get Your Gun put on by Boundary Musical & Theatre Society. LIZ MARTIN This is a tale of rivalry between Annie Oakley and Frank Butler, to see who has the better shot. In between some lively songs and some dancing, there is a competition of shots, with noise being quite realistic! I guess women in those days were not considered better at anything, so this feisty lady was quite the pioneer of her time. The good-natured rivalry turns to romance eventually, and he sees what a grand shot she really is. Apparently according to history, Frank becomes her manager as Annie becomes more famous than he; thank goodness there was love between them! These are Irving Berlin’s lyrics and music so is familiar to most of us, and I must admit that the two lead actors, Gary Smith (Butler) and Joni Aitken (Oakley), sang very well, especially on a very nice bouncy duet. The band was very good, keeping up with a great deal of music throughout and two of the members of the band were also in the show – so much talent! Of course, there are a few moments of hesitation on stage but for such a lavish production, this was very minimal indeed. There were some fine children on stage too and what a wonderful introduction to live theatre that is for them. They looked great. My friend and I decided to go the first night to show support, as opening night can be a difficult one, so an appreciative audience helps. I must congratulate the whole cast for its enthusiastic effort to show us a couple of hours of fun and great music. The audience was most appreciative, laughing at the funny lines and clapping where necessary. It inspires actors when the audience seems to be enjoying themselves, and that was apparent last night. This event was a large undertaking, with many actors and much work during scenes setting up. The backstage people need to be praised also for their quick graceful movements in changing sets, all done with agility and speed and everyone

in western attire. Even the ticket sellers had on western hats, adding to the good fun. Full marks to Deborah Baker for directing this ambitious musical, she sure pulled it off. The show continues next weekend also, so please take the time to support this fine bunch of people. You will not be disappointed.

KARL YU

Gazette Editor

With the Peewee Tier 4 B.C. Hockey Championships approaching, the buzz and excitement is building for the local peewee rep hockey team. The team will have home-ice advantage, with the hockey tournament taking place at Grand Forks Arena from March 17 to 22, and the players want to ensure they put on a strong showing. “We’re working as hard as we can in practices with conditioning to get ourselves in shape for the games,” said defenceman Tyson Soobotin. “We’re going to have approximately six (games) in five days so we’ll be tired if we don’t work on that.” “It’s going to be fun, just having fans coming here to watch us,” defenceman Malcolm Turner explained. “It’s going to give us a morale boost because we’re going to have people cheering us on instead of cheering on the other teams,” Soobotin added. Some of the players are looking forward to facing some different competition. “I’m looking forward to playing different teams we haven’t played before to see what they’re like,” said winger Emily Jourdin. When asked about the strengths of the team, goalie Kaeden Lane said he thinks speed is one of the team’s strong suits. “Our passing is getting fairly good too,” said player Levi Weiberg. Assistant coach and trainer Mike Jourdin said the coaching staff is putting the team through its paces in order to prepare them for the

championships. “We’re practicing twice a week and we’re just going through the curriculum of Hockey Canada and doing a lot of skill-type drills – two-on-ones, three-on-ones,” coach Jourdin said. “We’re doing some dryland,” said Turner and, “A lot of skating,” said centre Nathan Jourdin. In terms of predictions, the players felt that the team could make some waves at the tournament. “It all depends on how we work,” explained forward Dayton Bryan. “We can’t take any stupid penalties,” opined Turner. “If we play well, we should end up in the Top3,” Soobotin said.

For the Grand Forks Gazette

The Border Bruins’ annual general meeting (AGM) being held on March 7 at 7 p.m. in the Grand Forks Arena, is a great opportunity to get informed, get involved and become part of the “team behind the team.” The Bruins are coming off a big turnaround season. Under the leadership of first-year head coach and general manager Nick Deschenes, the team improved by 16 points in the standings and provided consistently entertaining hockey for its fans. Deschenes also played a big role in building a close, mutually beneficial relationship with the Grand Forks Minor Hockey Association and the Hockey Academy at Grand Forks Secondary School. The players were active in the community and the community in turn, welcomed the

boys with open arms. The non-profit organization is entirely volunteer-run. There are a number of positions open on the board of directors, and the team is always looking for volunteers to help run game day at the arena, organize fundraisers, or co-ordinate community events. The board believes that it is by instilling values of hard work, dedication and generosity in the players that fulfills its mandate to develop these young men into better people while enriching the community. Whatever your talent, the team can help you thrive. Whether you’re business-minded, people-oriented, like arts, photography or multimedia, or just enjoy the great game of hockey, now is a great time to become part of something special. Hopes are high for Deschenes’ second year at the helm; the hockey team is back on track and it is a very exciting time to join the Border Bruins.

Submission

Kim Dimock The West Kootenay midget house playoffs took place the first weekend in March in Rossland and Trail. The Grand Forks midget team got off to a slow start on Friday, losing 4-0 to the Nelson 2 team; however, it came back strong on Saturday, winning against Boundary 6-5 in the morning and beating Nakusp 4-3 in the afternoon to put the team first in its pool and into the semifinals. The team played Nelson 1 in the semifinal on Sunday morning.

Grand Forks led for most of the game but Nelson came back and tied it with less than one minute in regulation, after pulling its goalie. Grand Forks went on to win the game in overtime 3-2 to make it into the final and a chance to bring home the banner. The team played Nakusp in the championship game. It was a tight game but Grand Forks ending up losing 5-2 after an empty net goal with a minute and a half remaining in the game. The parents and players would like to thank their coaches, Al Jmayoff and Blair Moen, and team manager Jennifer Horahan, for all their time and effort to make this a successful hockey season for the team.
