Council puts library’s lease offer on hold
Petition gathering momentum
By Treena Mielke Council has agreed to take no action regarding a letter from the library board suggesting the board withdraw their offer to purchase and instead lease the town office building to expand. The letter, reviewed by council at its Feb. 25 meeting, stated the Rimbey Municipal Library staff and board of directors are concerned the proposed sale may divide the community. “We are willing to work with all parties involved to serve the members of the community in the best way possible. As a result, the board of directors is willing to withdraw our offer to purchase the building for $1 and, in turn, lease it from the Town of Rimbey.” The letter states the library will ensure delivery of payments to the town to the relocated town office and maintain the drop box for town mail. The letter goes on to say the board has considered alternate locations for the library, but expansion within the current building is the most desirable. The lack of space in the library has resulted in a restricted selection of books and difficulty in accommodating patrons for programs and events. There is also a shortage of office and workroom space. “Our goal is to provide a wellrun, accessible library that continues to play a strong role within the community. Our proposed expansion will help us achieve this goal.” Mayor Sheldon Ibbotson said a decision regarding the sale or lease of the building is not viable at this time due to a petition now being circulated asking for a referendum regarding the sale of the office buildings to the library board for $1. A petition started by a Rimbey resident who doesn’t like the idea of the town selling its offices for $1 to the Rimbey Municipal Library board is gathering momentum. Reuben Giebelhaus said 10 people are circulating a petition requesting council to hold a referendum regarding the sale during the October municipal election. More than 300 people have signed the petition that states the town offices are assessed at approximately $650,000 and the proposed new town offices in the provincial building will limit access for the disabled and elderly. Rimbey CAO Tony Goode is checking with the town’s lawyer as to the validity of the questions asked on the petition. He noted that each signature has to be checked to ensure the person is a town resident and at least 18 years of age. He added at least 240 signatures are needed to be valid. Goode will bring the lawyer’s comments to council at its next meeting. Giebelhaus said a decision has yet to be made as to whether the petition will continue to be circulated to obtain more names. He added the petition was started so the citizens of Rimbey could have an opportunity to provide input as to whether a building they own should be sold for $1 to allow for library expansion. “I know it gives the impression that I’m down on libraries but it (the sale) doesn’t make economic sense to me. The people in Rimbey own that building. They paid for it. If the town votes in favor of the sale they (council) can go to bed with a clear conscience.”

Rimbey needs bigger library Don’t blink or you might miss it. That’s how some people might talk about Rimbey, a tiny rural community not much bigger than the pin stuck on a map to mark its spot. But, the size of Rimbey is somewhat deceptive, because stuff goes Treena Mielke on here. In fact bigger communities have nothOn The Other Side ing Rimbey doesn’t have, other than perhaps a Tim Hortons. We have scandals, and lawsuits and break-ins and drug deals going down. We even have our own RCMP guys to deal with all of that. The latest news, which will once again secure our little stick pin place on the map, is an uproar about selling the town offices to the library board for $1 so the hallowed halls of reading we call our library can expand across the hallway and into the town offices. The expansion will mean many things. It goes without saying there will be more books and a better selection. The librarian and her staff won’t be so cramped and their working conditions will improve. There will be more programs, probably better lighting (I don’t actually know about the lighting but I’m sure it is a possibility). But, mostly the expansion will mean the library and all the programs, events and activities it is used for, will become bigger and better. And that has to be a good thing. A library is important to the culture of any community. You might see favorite watering holes dotting Main Street, coffee shops strung along side streets and quaint little gift shops to lure people in. But, it’s the library that marks the town as progressive, and solid and it is within this institution that families, blue collar workers and business suit types all are joined with a common thread — the search for knowledge or even just the search for a really good book. It is true that the Rimbey library has taken it upon itself to hold events such as wine tasting nights and movie nights. Apparently, some people don’t like this. However, judging by the patrons who crowd into the tiny bit of space allotted them, some seem to like it just fine. The library could cease having these events to quell the rising storm of controversy it seems to have caused, but the fact remains, the library, as it sits now, is too small. According to the Alberta Public Library Standards formula, the Rimbey Municipal Library should be 6,500 square feet. It is now somewhere between 2,300 and2,800 square feet. Those are the facts. The library, of course, could move to another location. Or, the town could debenture borrow, perhaps secure government grants, and go out on a limb and build a new library. Perhaps they could rent the empty space left by the library to some commercial business like a movie theatre or perhaps a wine tasting type person. Both of those ideas are unrealistic, but in all seriousness, if the library moves out, it will leave an empty space in the building and, I could be wrong, but I don’t believe there is a huge demand for commercial space in downtown Rimbey at the moment. Council, after reviewing facts and figures, came up with the idea of selling the town offices to the library for $1. No doubt, the decision was made after weighing the pros and cons carefully. The only thing the town fathers didn’t take into consideration was the furor this decision would cause among some taxpayers. But, it seems to have put Rimbey back on the map. It does make one wonder, however, if people on the outside will view all this controversy in a positive way. After all, who, even in small town Alberta, can justify not wanting to see a library expand?
“Grillosconi” wins but not Italians The winner of the recent election in Italy was a mythical beast called “Grillosconi.” That is bad news for Italy, for the single European currency, the euro, and even for the future of the European Union. Not that “Grillosconi” will ever form a coherent government in Italy. The problem is that he — or rather, they — will prevent anybody else from doing that either. The newer part of this hybrid beast is Beppe Grillo, a former stand-up comedian who is essentially an anti-politician. His blog boils with bile against Italy’s entire political class, and his public appearances are angry, arm-waving rants against the whole system. Raging against Italy’s privileged, corrupt and dysfunctional political class is a perfectly reasonable thing to do, but Grillo’s Five Star Movement, which in just a few years grew from nothing to take a quarter of the national vote in last Sunday’s election, has nothing useful to put in its place. Just “throw the bums out,” and the democratic power of the internet will solve all of Italy’s problems. The older part of the beast is Silvio Berlusconi, the former cruise ship crooner and billionaire media magnate (he’s the richest man in Italy) whose cynical populism has dominated Italian politics for the past 20 years. For more than half of that time he has been the prime minister, and even when he’s out of power he dominates the political stage. Berlusconi is 76 now but he still manages to generate constant sex scandals. (His “bunga bunga” parties are notorious, and he currently faces charges in connection with an underage prostitute.) He has been fighting charges or appealing against convictions for corruption for all of that time, and keeps changing the criminal law to avoid doing jail time. Yet a large number of Italians go on voting for him. Their devotion is even more inexplicable when you recall that Italy has been in steady economic
Gwynne Dyer Guest Columnist
decline for most of Berlusconi’s two decades as the country’s dominant political figure. The Italian economy is smaller than it was 12 years ago, over one-third of the under-25s are unemployed, and the state auditor estimates that 60 billion euros is stolen from the national budget by corrupt politicians every year. So 29 per cent of Italians voted for Silvio Berlusconi’s party in the election and 25 per cent voted for Beppe Grillo’s. More than half of Italy’s voters preferred some part of the “Grillosconi” monster to more serious politicians who talked about fixing the economy, tackling the budget deficit, fighting organized crime, and reforming the country’s badly broken legal system. The result, of course, is political paralysis: no party or group of parties is able to form a stable government, and there will probably be another election within a year. (Only one Italian government in the past six decades has served out its full five-year term.) Meanwhile, the economy continues to decay, and the risk grows that Italy will need a financial bailout so massive that it causes a collapse of the euro. One number says it all: there are about 70,000 Italian public officials who are given cars with chauffeurs. (In Britain, the number is 300.) Why so many Italians put up with this kind of thing defies understanding. But so does the fact that so many of those who are infuriated by it turn to a clown like Grillo, who offers salvation in the form of a web-based direct democracy. The crisis will therefore continue indefinitely. Gwynne Dyer is an independent journalist whose column is published in 45 countries.

Library board proposes new lease agreement Dear Editor: The Rimbey Municipal Library staff and board of directors have worked hard to achieve a level of excellence in its programs and collections. This has resulted in the library having outgrown its current space, and for the board of directors to propose an expansion of our current site. The restricted space in which library staff and patrons are currently working is causing the following problems: • Our collection size has become restricted due to an inability to house more bookshelves. • Many of our programs are well attended — especially those for children — and we do not always have enough space to safely and/or comfortably accommodate everyone. • There is a lack of soft seating with access to power bars. • There is a lack of quiet space for individuals to study in. • There is a lack of storage space. • There is a lack of a professional sound system — crucial for some programming. • There is a lack of office and workroom space causing multiple problems/discomfort for the librarian and her staff. The board has considered alternate locations for the library, however, expansion within our current building is the most desirable due to our need to rectify these issues
as quickly as possible. With specific mention toward the cost of relocating the Town of Rimbey office, it appears people’s concerns are reflecting badly on the library, which has no vested interest in Town politics. The Rimbey Municipal Library staff and board of directors have always put the needs of the community first and are concerned that this issue may divide the community. We are also concerned that such a division will hurt both services to the community and our ability to fundraise in the future. We are willing to work with all parties involved to serve the community in the best way possible. As a result, the Board of Directors are willing to withdraw our offer of purchasing the building for $1 and in turn, lease it from the Town of Rimbey. To assist residents, the library will maintain the drop box for Town of Rimbey mail and will ensure delivery to the relocated town office. Our goal is to provide a well-run, accessible library that continues to play a strong role within the community. Our proposed expansion will help us achieve this goal, and we hope the town council will accept our offer to lease the current town office space. Rimbey Municipal Library board of directors: Rowena Aitken, Paul Payson, Jamie Coston, Jim Peck, Cheryl Duckett, Margaret Ramsey Robyn McIntyre, Valerie Warren and Gordon Mounteney
Reader questions real estate value of town office Dear Editor: What is the Rimbey Town Office really worth? In the Feb. 19 issue of the Rimbey Review, Ponoka County Coun. Keith Beebe is quoted as saying, “They’re going to sell a $280,000 building for $1.” In the same article Ponoka County CAO Charlie Cutforth is quoted as saying “the total cost is $500,000….” There was no indication of what was meant by “total cost.” In the Feb. 26 issue of the Rimbey Review, MLA Joe Anglin has put the current value of the town offices at $650,000. Sounds like Rimbey is a good place to invest in real estate — $280,000 to $650,000 in one week. Not bad, or could it be that our elected officials have no idea what they are talking about? When it comes to spending taxpayer dollars, I am sure some of our councillors, MLAs etc. should look in their own closets for skeletons before discrediting the decisions of others. Mr. Anglin questions the province subsidizing the town office’s rent. Maybe Mr. Anglin will share with us who subsidizes his constituency office in Sundre, and by what dollar amount. I have heard a lot from Mr. Anglin
about how wrong it is for the Town of Rimbey to sell/lease its town office to the library for $1. What I have not heard a lot about from him is about the provincial government (of which Mr. Anglin is an MLA) selling/giving away the Rimbey airport (60 acres m/l) to the Town of Rimbey for $1. Have the hardworking ministers and MLAs of Alberta given a disproportionate allocation of taxpayer resources to the Town of Rimbey? Anglin’s list of possibilities as outlined in his Feb. 26 Letter to the Editor is for the most part nothing more than fear-mongering. MLA Anglin’s implication that the Rimbey school population should not be included in calculations to justify library expansion is nothing short of nitpicking and does nothing to forward the credibility of our MLA. My children who went through the Rimbey school system, spent many hours at the Rimbey Municipal Library and so do many of the school kids today. To exclude this population from expansion calculation has no merit. Could it be that some of the critics of the proposed library expansion have lost touch with the real values of community life? Opposition to library expansion puzzling to reader Dear Editor: I find it hard to believe that some people in this town are against a library expansion. My family has used many of the Rimbey Municipal Library’s wonderful programs since we moved to here eight years ago. Our children have attended Story Time, Movie Night, Pizza and Board Games Night, holiday themed parties, science experiments, magicians, storytellers and the Summer Reading Program to name a few. They have made friends, became better readers, gained valuable knowledge and most importantly, gained self-confidence —all thanks in part to the Rimbey library. Furthermore, I have never abused the library by using it as a form of child care. For most programs, the library sets an age limit for children to participate unattended and I believe most parents abide by these restrictions. If you have ever been in the library when programming is taking place, you will no doubt have
noticed it is very crowded. Kids and adults are often sitting on the floor to watch movies or crammed in to listen to a story. Also, there are sometimes children with no room at the craft table. As Rimbey continues to grow, this will become even more of a problem. However, expanding the library will not only benefit our children, but us all. I have often had to order books from other libraries and be put on a long waiting list because our library simply does not have the shelf space. Plus, adult programing such as computer training and book clubs will be able to accept more participants. A bigger library equals more space and more books — simple. I just don’t see how this could be negative. With no indoor pool, movie theatre or indoor playground, the library fills a need in Rimbey. Kids with nothing to do will find their own ways to occupy themselves, which often can be counterproductive. I would rather my children be at the library learning, becoming better readers and play-
ing board games with their friends than at home playing video games or hanging around town getting into trouble. As far as tax dollars are concerned, I don’t believe the programming is a strain. Some of the programs, such as Pizza and Board Game Night, charge a small fee. Others, like Movie Night and the Summer Reading Program, are sponsored by generous companies. Furthermore, if the library were to move to the old Fields location in the Co-op, it would cost taxpayers $60,000 per year to rent the space. However, by moving the town office to the Provincial Building, it will cost taxpayers just over half that amount. This to me is a no-brainer. I would like to thank the staff
and volunteers at the Rimbey Municipal Library for all they do. They put a tremendous amount of time and effort into each and every program they offer. Talk to any teacher and they will tell you reading is the most valuable skill a child learns, as a child that reads well will do better in school in general. Plus, it is proven that children who attend the Summer Reading Program will be better readers than children who do not. The library is the hub of learning in our town, where children and adults alike gather to expand their minds. Let’s get behind our library and give them support for this overdue and necessary expansion, as it will benefit our entire town. Natalie Evans
More public library space needed Council deserves Dear Editor: I have been reading some of the letters about the library expansion and it amazes me to hear how low of a priority people can put on a library and its resources for children’s education. I have heard complaints all over and from every age group about how much time kids spend on electronic devices. And yet here we have talk of expanding a library with books and there are reservations. I would have to ask why? From some of the letters it sounds like people don’t believe there is a need for the extra space. For those who have thought this thought I would urge them to take the time and go to some of the library programs before passing judgment. I have four children between the ages of four and 11, if you add a few more families, before you know it, you have 15 to 20 children. Have you ever tried to manoeuvre around that many children in the space unoccupied by books at the Rimbey Municipal Library? I have watched other people come and try and use the library while there are children’s programs on and I feel sorry for them. I commend the girls who run

these programs for doing such an exceptional job working in such a small space. It is within the space of the Rimbey library where reading, experiments and crafts take place; where children can begin to understand what books can teach them. When you are at these programs you can see how excited the children are to learn! I would encourage people to spend some time with children in a small space. They might have a different opinion about how much room the library really needs. It is my prayer that those who do use the library and the programs they provide would have a bigger voice than those who don’t. I am only speaking in regards to one area of library use. There are a lot of other age groups that use the library in many different ways, but children do tend to take up more room, even though they are smaller. My final thought is this: If you are in a town where a library is growing that is a good sign. That means you have young people. Where there are young people there needs to be room to grow. What better place than at a library? Stacey Bell

to be commended Dear Editor: First, I want to congratulate town council for its courageous decision to basically give away its home base to expand our library and the services it offers. It is going to help a portion of our society that usually isn’t on the receiving end of society’s largess. Moving town council as well as the town administrative offices will result in a lot of adjustments (and probably some sacrifices) to a less comfortable place. It’s a good example of how all levels of government should behave: put service to others above its own well-being. What is even more encouraging is that they did this with a unanimous vote. Of course this decision is not without controversy — the letters to the paper will testify to that. My hope is that the project will proceed swiftly and decisively. We don’t need this issue lingering in the background much longer. In this context I find the behavior of our elected MLA, Joe Anglin, disturbing. From reading his letters to the editor about this topic, I assume he is against the library expansion, but like many politicians, he will probably say this is not true at all and is a gross misinterpretation. What is true is that he has expressed grave concern over council’s decision in two lengthy letters to the editor. What is also true is that he has never discussed this topic directly with town council and that his first letter came out two weeks after council had already carried the unanimous vote to proceed with the expansion. Don’t you think someone who really feels strongly about something should approach the decision makers directly before they make the decision if he really UFA SELLS & RENTS TRAILERS wanted to make a difference? Albertans can expect slower economy in 2013 By Treena Mielke Albertans can expect to see more layoffs, mostly in the oil industry this year, but a softer job market is not all about gloom and doom, says a wellknown senior economist. Todd Hirsch, who spoke to Rimbey and District Chamber of Commerce at its annual general meeting held at the Best Western Rimstone Ridge Hotel Feb. 26, said a slower economy is not such a bad thing. “I’m not expecting Alberta’s economy to crash and burn but it will be a little softer,” Hirsch said. Hirsch attributes the slowdown to the difference in price between the benchmark WTU price, which he notes is still fairly good, and the Western Canadian benchmark price that has fallen due to more oil coming out of the United States.
Hirsch noted a key factor in the fall of the Western Canadian benchmark price is the North Dakota Shale Oil boon that has boosted oil production in the US higher than it has been for some time. On a brighter note, Hirsch noted the forestry industry in Alberta is doing well as a result of the housing market in the US that is putting more demands on lumber. Agriculture, as well, continues to show high returns,. “I don’t need to do a lot of preaching here about how agriculture is doing,” he said. Grain and oil seed prices are quite strong and should be very good this year.” He predicted 2013 to be an average year for homebuilders, noting prices slumped after too many homes were built in 2006/2007. “They (home builders) are far more
disciplined now and I think 2013 will be an average year for home builders.” Hirsch stressed 2013 will not be a recession but simply a slowdown resulting in moderation, which could, in the end, turn out to be positive. “Faster isn’t always better,” he said. And the occasional soft year always make the boom years feel that much better.” Layoffs in the oil patch could result in more entrepreneurs setting off on their own. He predicted some energy company workers who get a pink slip will start their own tiny companies, which will be the foundation for the next generation of junior and midsized players. Hirsch also noted a slowdown may make it easier to negotiate with British Columbia on the need to
build a pipeline to the West Coast. “It is difficult for Alberta to plead poverty with four per cent unemployment, high wages, zero debt and (until recently) embarrassing surpluses.” He noted the oil industry is beneficial to all of Canada but it’s mostly Alberta that reaps the rewards. A slowdown in the oil industry means other sectors may gain a foothold in the province. Hirsch compared Alberta and its economy to its provincial bird, the Great Horned Owl, which he referred to as an adaptable, amazing animal, adding they can hear a mouse under four feet of snow and survive in almost any climate. “The Great Horned Owl is a remarkable creature and Alberta is a remarkable province with a remarkable economy.”

By Treena Mielke There will be a few new faces on Rimbey and District Chamber of Commerce executive this year. During the chamber’s annual general meeting held Feb. 26 at the Best Western Rimstone Ridge Hotel, Stan Cummings was sworn in as vice-president, replacing Tresa Lowe, and Audrey McCrimmon replaced Phil Swanson as treasurer. Jackie Stratton agreed to continue as president, and Tonya Hatala will stay on as secretary. According to a report Swanson, the chamber is sitting with a deficit of $6,759. However, increased membership expected in 2013 and the possibility of increased revenue from the upcoming tradeshow and hot air affair coming in May could boost revenue. A new part-time administrative assistant, Carrie Vaarstra, was hired in September. Creating the paid position was a good move and a good way to increase the chamber’s profile in the community, said Stratton. “We have our first ever newsletter and she is keeping our website up to date. The help has been tremendous.” Stratton noted that chamber executive and directors have their own businesses to run and are often too busy to give chamber issues the attention to detail needed. It is noted in the chamber’s newsletter a shop local program has kept $167,000 in Rimbey. The winners of the Rimbey Bucks contest were Donna Regnier, Marilyn Lutwick and Deanna Browne. To purchase Rimbey Bucks call Jackie Stratton at 403-843-2727. The work experience scholarships sponsored by the chamber went to Michelle Von Gunten, Brianne Staples and Reid Swier. Directors on the chamber are Ilya Dourmanov, Christine Plumb, Karen Conover and Janet Carlson.

Hot Air Affair and expo to return By Treena Mielke The Rimbey Chamber of Commerce’s Hot Air Affair and expo held in Rimbey last year survived its trial run and will be back this year. Chamber president Jackie Stratton said Expo 2012 and the Hot Air Affair were deemed a great success, although expenses outweighed revenue by $640. Stratton expects the event to be even bigger and better than last year, and is hopeful revenue will increase accordingly. “We are booking pilots and booths now and we already have 15 balloonists. Last year we had 11.” The Hot Air Affair is to be held May 10 and 11 and the expo will be held May 10 to 12. The event, last year, proved popu-

Developer gets go-ahead from council By Treena Mielke A local developer has received the green light from council for a planned project in the southwest corner of Rimbey. Following a public hearing held Feb. 25, council gave third reading to the BRIX Area Structure Plan thereby allowing owner Steffen Olsen to go ahead with his plans. The plan includes the development of approximately 61 acres of land in the southwest corner of Rimbey. Development is to take place in three stages with the first phase to
include six two-acre residential lots. Phases two and three are to include commercial and industrial development. Olsen is pleased council gave the approval. “It all went very smoothly.” The area structure plan identifies key issues such as land use, servicing, aesthetic design, transportation network and municipal reserve issues. The developer doesn’t foresee business slowing down in the future. “I’m already booked for the summer,” he said. “Last summer my worst problem was the labor market (finding employees).”

Internet problems continue to plague rural residents By Jeffrey Heyden-Kaye There’s nothing more frustrating than being connected to the Internet and having it cut out intermittently. cence but is difficult to acquire and expensive, he explained. Platinum uses more unlicensed frequencies as it is easier and cheaper to acquire. “We have unlimited usage, you can use as much as you want.” The biggest challenge with rural Internet is a consistent power supply; a power pole might be damaged or a brownout could occur. “We spend 90 per cent of our time fixing and repairing,” he stated. Heavy usage will slow down the network though and that can happen in cities such as Calgary and Edmonton during peak times. “It’s just the laws of physics.”
Parkinson used a water pipe as an example and only a certain amount of product can go through the pipe. Whether using copper, fiber optic cables or the radio spectrum there will still be congestion at certain times. Some companies will throttle users’ bandwidth to regulate network traffic but Platinum does not throttle use, he added. They also allow unlimited use. Swanson has since been able to get in touch with the same customer service representative who called before and an employee was scheduled to offer a hardware upgrade for her to try.

Charges pending from bar fight Rimbey RCMP responded to 42 calls for service. Complaints ranged from mental health issues to neighborhood disputes and domestic violence. In the early morning hours of Feb. 2, officers responded to a report of a donnybrook at a local watering hole. Evidently, oilfield workers had an argument in the bar and felt the only way to resolve it was to resort to fisticuffs. The subsequent fight resulted in the loser being knocked unconscious. EMS transported the injured man to the hospital where he was treated for non-life threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing into this matter and charges are pending. Doesn’t take stay away as an answer Mounties are investigating a criminal harassment complaint after a man allegedly paid unwanted attention to his ex-girlfriend by showing up at her house unannounced after being repeatedly advised not to. This man has been convicted of criminal harassment and other serious criminal offences against this ex-girlfriend, resulting in jail time over the last few years. Charges are pending the outcome of this in-
vestigation. Driving by the light of the silvery moon In the evening hours of Feb. 27, a 46-year-old Bluffton woman, left a local bar in her vehicle after consuming several wobbly pops. Alert officers on patrol felt the need to stop and check her sobriety as she was driving home without her headlights lit, strictly relying on the moonlight and the stars above. The driver failed a breathalizer test, her license was suspended and her vehicle was impounded under the authority of the new legislation aimed at making Alberta’s roads safer. That’s not neighbourly RCMP responded to several calls regarding an ongoing neighborhood dispute. A resident of Rimbey is facing a number of charges in connection the bad relations he has with his neighbors. He is well known by police and faces countless criminal charges relating to his behavior. The odds of buying a new Mercedes Benz valued at $63,000 for $9,000 are pretty low. Especially if the seller requests you wire him the money to Morocco. From 30 Rock’s Alec Baldwin and Robert Carlock: “Good ideas come from anywhere, even from bad ideas.” Be a contrarian and grow old ungracefully. Know your values and focus on them. Love what you do. Seek out role models at every stage of your life. Be “a madman” when it comes to detail. Remember you truly are what you eat. Work hard and devote yourself to what you’re passionate about. Reward talented people for risk-taking and don’t let them leave. Challenge yourself and your brain. Be likeable. As business/motivational books go, The Art of Doing is a quirky little thing. Authors Camille Sweeney and Josh Gosfield say in their introduction they enjoyed finding and interviewing their superachievers, which is abundantly clear in every bubbly chapter. I also thought their format was fun: a short bio, followed by advice, then trivia about the person and their industry, all in just a few pages per chapter. That makes this book a bit on the lighter (but informational) side and, despite that there are some off-the-wall industries represented here, I think you’ll find it useful in many ways. This is the perfect book for those days when you wonder what it would be like to have
a different job, because it gives you a peek, then a boost. So when you need exactly that, The Art of Doing is the book to reach for.
Library’s lease offer on hold Continued from page 1 “Until we know what the petition states and if it is valid, it’s not possible to make any decisions concerning the library.” However, Ibbotson would consider the option of leasing the building if the townspeople are more receptive to that alternative than they are to selling it. “I’m open to looking at a lease if it serves to heal the division in the community.” Ibbotson understands a petition is part of the democratic process. “Every citizen has a right to hold council accountable for their decisions and to petition if they disagree with this decision. What’s unfortunate is that a few people have made this a personal issue directed at the library board. The library board is com-
posed of hard working volunteers who are providing a great service to our community and they are being attacked for doing their job and doing it well.” He also clarified a statement on the petition that states the proposed new town offices limits access for the disabled and elderly is incorrect. “There is an elevator and wheelchair access. For anyone that’s not mobile, it is the easiest building in town to get around in.”
