Local fill foes not optimistic By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star
For several years, Langley Township staff, council, its lawyer and numerous rural residents have been knee deep in discussions about how to handle controversial and profitable fill sites on agricultural land. On Monday night, council approved a revised soil deposit policy and bylaw that Township lawyer James Goulden said should make it harder to create illegal dumping sites. Councillor Kim Richter and David Davis were opposed. Modifications to the policy and bylaw were made from input received from concerned citizens, developers and council and finally the Township’s law firm Bull Housser and Tupper. The revised policy requires all applications over 600 cubic metres to go through a petition process whereby owners of properties within one mile (1.6 km) of the site can express support or opposition. While applications will be referred to the
ALC, applications having less than 80 per cent support from neighbours may be rejected by council and not passed onto the ALC. The revised bylaw increases the security deposit. The current 10 applications in the hopper will be grandfathered and proceed under the old policy, said Township staff. Fill sites continue to be in high demand in Langley. Since 2010, according to the Township, 112 applications have been made for fill sites in Langley. At the Monday night meeting, Richter asked for the vote to be deferred. Her motion was defeated. “I was concerned with the material that was presented to us from different members of the community who have been working very hard for the past seven months to help us achieve a bylaw that is tight and that reflects the wishes of the community,” said Richter. “I’m concerned there is still outstanding items from their perspective so I would like to move a deferral of this bylaw to allow for a meeting SEE: Page 3

The COOL place to...Đ
Langley Township Councillor Charlie Fox hopes the intersection at the corner of 264 Street and Robertson Crescent could get the green light for the addition of a left-turn bay — something he says will make the intersection much safer for motorists. “We recently had a fatal accident there, but I’ve also witnessed many, many other instances in that corner when you’re going northbound,” said Fox during Monday evening’s council meeting. “There is no left-turn bay there, so what happens is when a car stops with their blinker to turn left onto Robertson Crescent from 264 Street, often cars and trucks — and you can see it very evidently from the marks on the gravel — will pull around, making it a very dangerous situation.” Councillor Fox put forth a motion to council to send a letter to the Ministry of Transportation requesting a left-turn bay lane northbound at the intersection, as a measure of traffic safety.

The motion was seconded by Councillor Kim Richter, who also noted the area is not well-lit. “I agree 100 per cent with Councillor Fox that this is a clenched-fist intersection and part of the problem is that the lights are way back where the trees block it — that’s something to be considered as well.” Councillor David Davis suggested that, in addition to a letter being sent to the Ministry of Transportation, one also one should be prepared for the Transportation Safety Committee — an amendment to Fox’s motion that was unanimously carried. At least four people were sent to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries after a two-car crash occurred at the intersection earlier last month. In December, 2012, an 87-year-old man was killed and his wife seriously injured along with a 44-year-old Langley woman in another vehicle at the intersection of Robertson Crescent and 264 Street. Since that time, Langley Township council has been looking at improvements to the intersection.

No ban of propane cannons possible By DAN FERGUSON Aldergrove Star
The final report by the Township of Langley Propane Cannon Task Force will not call for banning the controversial devices. Instead, the committee is proposing tighter regulations, including larger setbacks and less frequent firing near horses. That comes after receipt of a letter from the BCFIRB (BC Farm Industry Review Board) the provincial authority that would have to approve banning the audible bird scare devices. In the letter, BCFIRB made it clear the agency will not permit a ban, task force chair Megan Dykeman told The Times Tuesday (March 5). “They were willing to look at other options, but not a full ban,” Dykeman said. “It would be irresponsible for us as a committee to recommend a ban knowing it will be overturned.” The task force report will go to the Township Agricultural Advisory Committee on March 21. It proposes a farm bylaw that would require blueberry farms to keep cannons a greater distance from horse farms, who have complained the noise, designed to scare away birds, is also frightening their animals. It would also reduce how often the cannons can be fired. The bylaw would set escalating fines, $150 for a first offence, $350 for a second and $500 for a third offence. The amount would not rise any higher after a third offence because that would increase the likelihood of legal action against the Township, Dykeman said. “We would essentially be litigating each one.” Farmers would be required to get a licence to use cannons and provide a bird management plan before one is granted. Though the regulations are not the ban most Langley critics of the cannons have
called for, Dykeman said they are “practical and implementable” options. “We think we’ve found the best possible solution [given the BCFIRB rejection of any ban],” Dykeman said. The Propane Cannon Task Force was created in September after council postponed a decision on proposed changes to Township noise bylaws and the creation of a farming bylaw to forbid the cannons. Council sent the matter to the municipal Agricultural Advisory Committee to investigate and report back. The committee established the task force during its Sept. 19 meeting and assigned it to meet with the berry farmers who use the propane cannons and the people who complain about them, as well as government agencies and experts. During a public hearing in January, the task force heard from 25 speakers, all critical of blueberry cannons. They said the noisemakers used to scare away berry-munching birds are disturbing to people, horses and pets and most demanded an outright ban. “They are depriving me of my right to farm,” said John Reid, one of many horse facility owners to speak. The constant noise during the blueberry growing season is driving down property values, Reid added.” Alicia Harper, vice president of membership and marketing for the Horse Council of BC, said the cannons are especially damaging in Langley, often called the “horse capital of BC.” Carol Hauta, a Langley resident who lives near three blueberry farms that use propane cannons, said friends and family won’t come out for summer barbecues at her place during the summer because of the noise. “In the middle of the growing season when we have our door and windows open to enjoy the summer weather, all we can hear is the boom of propane cannons and the screech of noise scare devices,” Hauta said.

School Deal Still a Work in Progress
KURT LANGMANN PHOTO
Aldergrove Elks club members (from left) Cam Ross, Doug Philips and Archie Radowitz are currently working on transforming rooms in the 1912 Aldergrove Elementary School heritage building into meeting space for the 90-year-old club, but they want to correct a misunderstanding reported in the Feb. 14 edition of The Aldergrove Star. At this point the Elks only have a renewable six-month lease on the school, and any future uses or contributions by the club are still under negotiation with the property owners, the Township of Langley. Since the future development of the property as a new recreation centre is still only in the planning stages, the Elks are waiting to see what transpires from these proposals. “We are open to an agreement beneficial to all parties,” said Philips, “but at this stage we have no way to know what that will be.”
Serious injuries to four in crash Aldergrove Star
Speed is believed to be a major factor in a serious collision that took place on Highway 1 in Abbotsford on Monday night, according to RCMP Traffic Services. Cpl. Robert McDonald said the 38-year-old driver was travelling east in a 2003 GMC Envoy just after 8:30 p.m. when he lost control of the vehicle and struck the centre median
near the Fraser Highway/Mt. Lehman Road exit. The vehicle then rolled several times. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service personnel worked to extricate a man through the front windshield of the car. An air ambulance was called to the scene to airlift the seriously injured patient to a Vancouver-area hospital. McDonald said two other passengers and the driver were
severely injured. They were all taken to Abbotsford Regional Hospital. The eastbound lanes of the highway were shut down for several hours as the Integrated Collision Reconstruction Service and Fraser Valley Traffic Services investigated. Witnesses to the collision are asked to contact Fraser Valley Traffic Services at 604702-4039.
Residents skeptical of Township’s new fill site bylaw FROM FRONT:
to occur between the citizens who have been working on this, and the Township’s counsel, Mr. Goulden?” Councillor Bob Long wasn’t convinced. “We spend an exorbitant amount of time on this and we’ve had many, many delegations and a lot of advice and have spent a lot of money on this. I think it’s time to move forward with it,” he said. Councillor Charlie Fox, who has been vocal on how badly soil deposit applications are handled, voted in favour of the revised bylaw and policy. “We were elected at this table to regulate soil deposits, end of sentence. We have staff, you are the soil experts, we have decision making power and in the process, the buck stops here,” said Fox. “It doesn’t stop with the lawyer and it doesn’t stop anywhere else. And folks, if a soil deposit screws up , you can look . . . not to the citizens, not the
lawyers, to us. The lawyers have given us the tools, we need to apply them.” Concerned citizens who have spent countless hours, paying more than $200 for Freedom of Information requests on fill sites in the Township, as well as documenting illegal dumping and operations, wore pink flowers on their lapels and spoke to council about their concerns on Monday afternoon. They aren’t sure much will change with the upgraded policy and bylaw. “There has been no discussion of enforcement,” said resident Mei Lin Yeoell. Goulden said enforcement would be at the discretion of council through to staff. “Council only hears about the carnage from us every three months or so when we tell them,” said resident Lisa Weih. Residents offered photographic
proof of sites where illegal dumping has taken place, where ponds have been filled in and where setbacks haven’t been adhered to. Developers clearing land to build houses often need somewhere to put the waste of clay, soil and other materials. Goulden was satisfied that the bylaw and policy goes far enough and all of it would stand up in court. But neighbouring cities like Surrey require much more, including insurance to be bought for each fill site, said Yeoell. They also have many more enforcement officers. Goulden said the ALC enforcement isn’t as “aggressive” as the Township. “So essentially they have downloaded that responsibility onto us,” said Fox. Goulden suggested council revisit the success or failure of the revised bylaw in one year’s time. — with files from Kristyl Clark

Jackman appeals murder conviction
Give lands heritage designation: WOLF By KRISTYL CLARK Aldergrove Star
While Petrina Arnason may have been the lone WOLF (Watchers of Langley Forests) member to appear before Langley Township council Monday evening, she certainly isn’t alone in her desire to preserve the Glen Valley forests. On behalf of the group of residents trying to prevent a purchase by developers, the Langley resident discussed community charter provisions for protecting municipal lands as a heritage conservation area — specifically, that the Glen Valley land should not now or never be considered to be surplus land. “I believe it’s important for people to realize that just because these properties — the ones that have been taken off the market — are actually off the market,” said Arnason, who applauded council’s decision last month to preserve 50 acres of land west along 257A Street. “ I just want to thank you for the wisdom that it took to make that decision — I know I speak tonight on behalf of WOLF, but also many members of the community. I’m here tonight following up on that resolution.” Arnason asked council to take concrete action to formalize its ear-
lier intention to preserve the land by setting it aside for conservation and protection perpetuity. She also noted a “cost-effective way’’ to go about it. “Under the Community Charter Act: Section 30, it says ‘a council may by bylaw reserve or dedicate for a particular municipal, or under public purpose, real property owned by the municipality’.. if council were to decide to do this, this would be done for the purpose related to heritage or heritage conservation by an informative vote of at least two-thirds of all members of council.” Arnason noted the land has been identified as historical and socio-cultural for the Kwantlen First Nation, which would support the designation. She also argued that these particular forests were exceedingly important to the many generations of the pioneers who have populated the region for the last 130 years. “It’s one of the last areas we can see and feel what Langley pioneers experienced,” she said matter-offactly. “Their proximity to Fort Langley and Glen Valley make them one of the few easily accessible places where one can get a sense of the magnificence of the natural heritage and irreplaceable biodiversity that once dominated
the region. To say they are a living museum is to underline their real significance in creating a link to our pioneer forbearers.” Arnason stated there is a growing body of international knowledge captured by the term biocultural heritage, which seeks to understand the importance of forests within the broader understanding of one’s cultural heritage. “This perspective embraces global governments, heritage authorities, tourism, biodiversity and also conservation agencies and the scientific community. I believe that our current understanding of heritage values should be expanded to include a new vision of the importance of these forests within our overall understanding of heritage values.” Councillor Kim Richter asked which lands Arnason was specifically referring to — McLellan East, West, or both parcels? “It kind of comes down to consultation,” replied Arnason. “Either side has potential and both could be collectively put together under that umbrella — either or both. “I like both. WOLF is always ready to cooperate in dialogue with the Township and our community to the property and conservation of these unique properties for generations.”

A man serving life in prison for the murder of Langley’s Kyle Barber had an appeal heard last week. Albert Jacob Jackman, 26, is appealing his conviction of first degree murder of Barber. His case was heard in the Court of Appeal on Monday and Tuesday. No decision has been made. In June 2011, Jackman was convicted of first degree murder while Gregory Barrett, 32, was found guilty of manslaughter for being an accessory. In finding the two men guilty as charged, Justice Sunni StrombergStein rejected defence claims that Barrett and Jackman did not mean to kill anyone when they paid Barber and his girlfriend a late night visit, concerning a robbery at a barn next door that Barrett leased. The pair said they were greeted politely at first, but then Barber suddenly ran to a bedroom and grabbed a pistol-grip shotgun from under his

Barriere resident, Maryse Berube recently received the following from her grandson: Dear Grandma, Recently, my class read a funny book by Jeff Brown called Flat Stanley. In the book, a young boy named Stanley is accidentally squished “as flat as a pancake” when a bulletin board falls on him. Stanley is very, very flat, but otherwise fine. Stanley’s family does not have enough money to send him on a plane to visit a friend in California, so they decide to put him in a large envelope and mail him. Our class agrees that it is a clever way to travel. Thank you for agreeing to host Flat Stanley in your city. My class is very excited to learn about Stanley’s visit with you. You may wish to take photos of Stanley at well known landmarks in your city, to write a journal or send post cards telling about his experiences, or even buy him a souvenir. Please use your imagination. The sky is the limit. When you are ready to send him home, please place him in the envelope that we have provided, along with his journal, and mail him to our school. Devin Slack and Mrs. McKinney (classroom teacher) Maryse says her grandson attends a school in Aldergrove, and that she thinks this is a great way to learn geography in a way that has a more lasting impression for the students. So she is filling the envelope with information and memen-

Parkside Centennial Elementary School and the Bertrand Creek Enhancement Society have worked together to bring a marine tidal pool to the school. The “seaquarium” is a saltwater ecosystem of native plants and animals that include a few dozen organisms such as a sea cucumber, sea urchins, feather duster worms, scallops, a decorator crap and anemones. “The seaquarium is like a magnet, drawing children of all ages and their parents who peer into its depths observing the plants and animals and their interactions,” says Betty Wilson, Parkside teacher. “It sparks questions, conversations and imagination.” All of the species, and even the water, has come from the ocean just off the shore of Victoria. It provides a personal touch. What better way to learn about where we live. Kids in Aldergrove will be able to say, ‘I know about Barriere and Louis Creek.’ They will have something in hand. I really liked the fact that the kids had to write the letter themselves.”

Federal Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver attended last week’s international conference in Vancouver on liquefied natural gas development. I spoke with him about Canada’s energy exports and emissions. Here are excerpts from that discussion: TF: President Barack Obama’s recent state of union address seemed to hint at approval for the Keystone XL pipeline from Alberta to U.S. refineries, with perhaps some measure to go along with it like a carbon cap and trade market. Your government has backed North American cap and trade before. Would you do it again? JO: No, we’re not thinking about that at all. The U.S. Congress is opposed to that concept from what I understand. TF: Your party ran ads targeting NDP leader Thomas Mulcair and equating cap and trade with a carbon tax. They’re not the same, are they? JO: The end result is that taxes increase because of how we handle carbon. It hasn’t been successful in Europe at all. Anyway, it’s not part of our thinking. We are making significant progress on greenhouse gas emissions. Our recent regulations regarding heavy-duty vehicles, the previous rules regarding cars and light trucks, which are identi-
Joe Oliver on oil, gas and coal
cal to the U.S., are going to be helpful. And also the rules relating to coal-fired electricity. It’s our objective to see all those coal plants closed, and in that regard we’re certainly ahead of the U.S. Coal is contributing 40 times the greenhouse gas emissions of the oil sands. And actually the oil sands are less than half the emissions from coal-fired electricity in the state of Illinois. We’re moving with the U.S. on the over-arching objective of reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 17 per cent from 2005 to 2020, but we’re also doing other things that the U.S. hasn’t yet decided to do. We’ve been approaching the reduction of emissions on a sectoral basis, and the next area of focus will be regulations in the oil and gas sector. TF: You’re comfortable with the idea that exporting LNG that replaces coal is an appropriate step at this time, one that’s doable as opposed to these Kyoto-type gestures? JO: It is doable. And on a global basis, this would be a very significant development. If China, for example, could significantly move from coal to gas, that would have a huge impact. Canada’s small. We’re about two per cent of global emissions. We have to do
our part, that’s the responsible thing to do, but it’s the big emitters that are going to make the difference to global emissions. TF: International Energy Agency talks about self-sufficiency in the U.S., oil and gas, by 2035. What does that mean for the Canadian economy? JO: Firstly, I don’t think they’re going to be self-sufficient in oil. North America will be self-sufficient in gas and oil. What it means is, for gas we’re going to have to find new markets, and for oil we’re going to have to find markets to sustain the growth in supply. The United States will still be a big buyer of Canadian oil. We’re shipping about two and a half million barrels a day, of which a million comes from the oil sands. Right now we’re losing about $50 million a day because of the crude oil bottleneck in the U.S. midwest, compared to international prices. We absolutely must find new markets, which is why our government in principle is supporting the transport of oil and gas to the west, to the east, continuing to the south and possibly even the north. A B.C. Chamber of Commerce survey has found that 63 per cent of businesses do not feel prepared for a return to the PST/ GST, and 73 per cent do not feel they’ve received adequate information. Allan Asaph, executive director of Abbotsford Chamber of Commerce, said he’s hearing “lots of questions” from local businesses as the transition back to the Provincial Sales Tax and Goods and Services Tax. Undoing the harmonized sales tax (HST) and establishing a modernized version of the 60-year-old provincial sales tax is the biggest task facing Premier Christy Clark’s government in the brief legislative sitting that precedes the May 14 provincial election. Finance Minister Mike de Jong introduced the transition legislation last Wednesday. It includes provisions for transactions that straddle the transition date such as new home purchases. The bill to replace the HST runs nearly 200 pages, and it will add accounting costs for business as well as taking away business input tax credits that match those available under the federal Goods and Services Tax. The government has given itself a deadline of April 1 to make the switch for the 2013-14 fiscal year. The administrative burden of the switch starts with businesses reprogramming cash registers and other systems to go back to collecting two separate sales taxes. One of the few modern touches to the new PST is the Allan Asaph, executive ability of more than 100,000 businesses director of the to register online at www.gov.bc.ca/ Abbotsford Chamber etaxbc/register, and view online inof Commerce structions to help make the transition. About 30,000 B.C. businesses have started up since 2010, and operators may have no experience with the old sales tax system. “Any increase in red tape and paper burden on a business is always stressful,” Asaph said. He emphasized that businesses do not need to register with the federal government for the GST, since they’re already registered via the HST. But they will need to register with the B.C. government for the PST. To further clarify the process, the Abbotsford Chamber is hosting a “Return to PST” information seminar on March 8 at ABC Restaurant from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Restaurant meals are among the items which will be PST exempt once again, but Paul Esposito, the owner/operator of Finnegan’s Pub and the Phoenix Lounge, said he doesn’t think the transition away from the HST will generate a major bounce for his business. He said the province’s beefed-up impaired driving laws, instituted in 2010, have proven a deterrent to potential customers, and he doesn’t believe they’ll be lured back by a reduction in sales tax. That said, Esposito acknowledged his customers were displeased when the HST came into effect. “Your blue collar workers who came in after work for a beer or two, they were very, very upset,” he said. “The HST, I believe, is a very good tax. What the government needed to do was make a few adjustments to consider the working people. They didn’t do it. Should you be paying HST on a pair of kids shoes? No. They should have made some exceptions.” Provincial sales taxes on restaurant meals, haircuts and other services will be removed as of April 1, but one companion tax is being kept in place. Private sales of vehicles, boats and aircraft are exempt from GST, but the province levied a 12 per cent provincial tax on the transactions to equalize treatment of used vehicle sales between dealerships and individuals. The government vowed to reinstate the old PST at seven per cent after the HST was rejected in a province-wide initiative petition. The HST was imposed in 2010, extending the provincial sales tax to a range of services. – with files from Tom Fletcher

Wanted man turns himself in Aldergrove Star
A man who has eluded police for almost eight years turned himself in last Tuesday. Jason Burkard, 38, appeared in court Thursday after being arrested on a warrant that goes back to June 13, 2005. The warrant relates to an incident which took place on Nov. 25, 2004. Langley RCMP had received numerous calls of an erratic driver in the Aldergrove area. One of the police cars responding to the call was hit by this vehicle as it tried to evade
capture. The officer was not successful in stopping the vehicle. Later on, it was spotted near the Greater Vancouver Zoo on 264 Street. Police received a report the Honda had collided with another vehicle. The vehicle entered the zoo parking lot and the driver fled. Witnesses at the scene directed police to Burkard’s location, and he was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle, flight from police, dangerous driving after fleeing from police and causing a pursuit.
He was held in custody until March 1, 2005 when he was found guilty of possession of stolen property over $5,000, dangerous driving, and theft under $5,000. He was sentenced to an 18-month conditional sentence order (CSO), which meant he did not go to jail. On May 17, 2005, he attended Chilliwack Community Corrections as part of his CSO, and was directed to re-attend a week later. He failed to attend on that date ad the arrest warrant
was issued on June 13, 2005. Fast forward seven years and eight months. In all that time, police found no evidence of any contact between Burkard and any government agencies. Continued efforts to execute the warrant led Langley’s Crime Reduction Unit officers to locate Burkard in Hope. Police made contact with family members and planned to arrest Burkard at his residence on Feb. 26. However, he turned himself in to Hope RCMP that same day.
Langley school district pays off its debt By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star
They aren’t popping the champagne corks just yet, but the Langley School District has paid off its deficit, two years ahead of schedule. The announcement came at Tuesday’s Board of Education meeting, while secretary treasurer David Green outlined the district’s $182 million 2012/13 budget. “We will have retired the deficit and balanced the budget, but we have to wait until June 30th’s financials to make it official,” said Green.
“That is hugely commendable,”said trustee Alison McVeigh. Board chair Wendy Johnson thanked students, staff and teachers for going through these challenging times. “It’s been tough on the system, our schools have felt it,” said Johnson. “Thank you to our teachers, our support staff, our administration. The good news is we paid it off two years ahead of time.” Through accounting errors, the district was challenged with an unexpected $13.5 million deficit that forced the govern-
ment to step in and the Auditor General set up a repayment plan that the district would have to abide by. The payments were to go until 2014. But all this good news should be met with caution, said Green to trustees. “There are significant cost pressures coming,” he said. An increase of $1.2 million for teachers’ pensions with bargaining for teachers to start next week on top of that. In the recently announced provincial budget, MSP premiums were going up. There was also no new funding for educa-
tion. “Utilities are also going up on April 1,” Green said. The impact on the provincially mandated cooperative gains program is yet to be determined, said Green. All school districts are required to pay for wage increases for teachers but with no help from the province and they aren’t allowed to cut any services. This could potentially mean $7 million chunk out of Langley’s budget without cutting services. The budget means the school system will have the same level of services it did last year, with no extras.
Police warn of petty thefts from vehicles By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star
Theft from vehicles continues to be a major problem in the Langleys and police are now going door-to-door to educate car owners. People who leave money or property in plain view in their vehicle may as well take their property and ‘give it away,’ said police. According to ICBC, theft from vehicles in 2012 was up seven per cent over the year prior. It may seem insignificant to leave loose change in the con-
sole, but the cost in time and money to repair damage to a vehicle is significant. Most people have to pay a $300 deductible. Over a two-week period, Langley RCMP auxiliaries and Community Police volunteers walked through residential areas in the Fort Langley and Yorkson checking parallel parked vehicles for invitations to auto crime. If a car was found to be unlocked, to have valuables in plain view, or have a visible garage door opener — the volun-
teers would attend the residences nearby to locate the owner and offer some safety tips and a crime prevention notice. Over five days, volunteers distributed 392 notices and went to 516 homes. Car owners can protect themselves against license plate decal theft by removing the older decals before applying the new one. These decals are designed to shred if they are removed, however when there is a build-up, thieves can use a knife to cut off the last few layers so that the top (current) decal remains intact. If
your decal is stolen, it needs to be reported to police and your will be required to pay an $18 fee to have the decal replaced. Bait cars are being set up all around Metro Vancouver to catch thieves who break into vehicles. “Please do everything you can to save yourself the time, money and inconvenience of theft from your vehicle,” said Cpl. Holly Marks. “Just by parking in your driveway, you cut your chances having your vehicle broken into by half.”
Events keep seniors busy in Aldergrove By MARIE GOLD Aldergrove Star
Editor’s note: For the past 24 years Maudie MacPherson has been writing the seniors’ column for The Aldergrove Star, to keep seniors informed of activities in our community. Maudie recently retired from writing the column and has been mentoring Marie Gold to continue writing the column. For a good and nutritious meal come to the Aldergrove Veterans and Seniors Club where they offer a full meal at 11:30 a.m. Tuesdays to Fridays. Other activities include cribbage on Tuesdays, bingo on Wednesdays, Mexican dominoes on Thursdays, and whist on Fridays, all at 1 p.m. Come out and enjoy the fun. Food and Friends offers lunch
at Bob’s Bar & Grill for only $5 each. It takes place four Tuesdays each month at 11:30 a.m. At the OAP Hall, there is a potluck supper at 5 p.m. on the fourth Sunday of each month. Card bingo is played following the meal. The Aldergrove Art Club gathers at the OAP Hall each Wednesday at 1 p.m. and they welcome new members who wish to learn. Others activities here include an exercise class on Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. followed by carpet bowling at 1 p.m. Bridge is played on Friday nights at 7 p.m. Saturday features old time dancing from 1 to 4 p.m., and Sundays offer square dancing from 1 to 4 p.m. I attended two celebrations of life last week, to remember
Dick Jones and Graham Puff. Condolences go out to their loved ones. It was also sad to hear of the passing of Don Hewitt on Feb. 25. Don was president of the Veterans and Seniors Club and was involved in many other jobs over recent years. These people will be missed. On a positive note, we now have the Aldergrove Event Centre (located next to the Langley Banquet Centre) at 264 Street and Fraser Highway. It is operated by Annette McArthur, who brought Dal Richards and his orchestra to the banquet centre in December, where we enjoyed an afternoon of wonderful music and dancing. If the rain is getting you down just remember that spring is around the corner.

Secondary Students from across the Langley School District gathered recently at Walnut Grove Secondary for the Together We Stand: Youth Empower Youth conference.
District Offers Thanks for Community Calendar Feedback
Corner Fraser Hwy. & LeFeuvre Rd • 604-856-6068 Mon. - Sat. 8 am - 6 pm • Sun. 8 am - 5 pm
Each year, dozens of grade seven and eight students take part in junior trades exploration programs offered in partnership with Kwantlen Polytechnic and the University of the Fraser Valley.
Superintendent Suzanne Hoffman is currently making use of all the information gained during this process in the drafting of the report that will be presented to the Board of Education in advance of their Regular Meeting of March 12, 2013. Both the Superintendent’s report and the results of the calendar survey will be made public at this Board meeting.
Dozens of secondary students also participate in trades exploration workshops. Once students decide that a trade may be of interest, the District offers two types of trade programs, Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) and ACE-IT. The SSA Program allows secondary students to obtain on the job training in any trade at any location. The District ACE-IT Programs meanwhile are built and taught by Langley teachers and provide the opportunity to earn both secondary school and technical training credit in trades including piping/ plumbing, hairdressing, carpentry, auto service technician, horticulture, electrical and roofing.
Discussions around potential change are never easy and the calendar dialogue process has been an incredible learning experience for the Langley School District. Though initially it was the District’s intent to foster a discussion around the educational opportunities that a calendar change might present, it became apparent quickly that a calendar change would deeply affect rooted cultural norms and family lifestyles within the community to an extent that had not been fully appreciated previously.
For more information on trades opportunities in Langley Schools, please contact the Career Education Department at 604-534-7891.
How can SD35 best support our LGBTQ community?
Though the District has heard from many who have expressed an appreciation for the opportunity to have this discussion, there are those who have also made it clear that the District has more work to do in order to earn the trust of families. It is our sincere hope that the outcome of this process will be seen as a positive step in this regard.
In our ongoing work to promote safe and caring schools, the staff and the Board of Education of the Langley School District are currently examining ways to increase support for diversity in our system.
The District extends our further appreciation to all of our staff, families and community partners who continue to engage with the District on this and other issues, as we work together towards the development and success of well-rounded Langley students.
As part of a process of consultation, we would like to invite the Langley community to participate in a dialogue on how to best support LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning) youth, staff and families in our schools. Share your thoughts online at http://bit.ly/SD35LGBTQ

Proudly serving the Fraser Valley for over 43 years and will continue to serve the community for many years to come!
The Langley School District is proud to host a variety of training opportunities for students throughout Langley. The District continues to work hard to generate awareness among students and families of apprenticeship opportunities and accredited training programs available.
The Langley School District would like to offer our thanks to all those who took the time to provide feedback on the school calendar dialogue these past few weeks. We are extremely pleased with the level of response we received from the community, which included hundreds of emails, tweets and twitter posts, nearly two hundred attendees to our District open houses, and thousands of submissions to our online survey.

Kodiaks win playoffs round, now face Pilots By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star
An empty-netter in the dying seconds sealed the Aldergrove Kodiaks’ 4-1 win over the Ridge Meadows Flames, Wednesday, Feb. 27, and the team now advances to the PJHL semi-finals against Abbotsford Pilots. It was the fourth consecutive victory for the Kodiaks, after losing the opening game to the Flames in the first round of playoffs. The Kodiaks begin the next round of the Harold Brittain conference Tuesday (Feb. 5) at MSA Arena and host the Pilots the next night, Feb. 6, 7:15 p.m. at Aldergrove Arena. Over in the Tom Shaw conference it is the Richmond Sockeyes versus the Delta Ice Hawks. The Flames put up a good fight but were outshot 41-32 by the Kodiaks, who led the scoring through all three frames. It was an entertaining game and the arena was packed to capacity with appreciative hockey fans. The Kodiaks were up 1-0 a mere 45 seconds into the game when Joshua Cronin dashed to the Flames net and scored, assisted by Spencer and Scott McHaffie. The Kodiaks scored twice more in the second period, seconds apart, when Spencer McHaffie scored on a power play at 15:25, assisted by Scott McHaffie
and Cole Gastel, and Adam Callegari scored at 15:56, assisted by Ryan Simpson and Kenny Prato. The Flames finally found the back of Kodiaks’ keeper Mark Menicucci’s net at 7:43 of the third, scored by Alexander Smith. The Flames pulled goalie Wesley McLeod in the final minute in the hopes of scoring at least two more, but Kodiaks’ Callegari got the puck and sent it flying from the Kodiaks’ end straight into the Flames’ empty net at 19:43. Callegari and Menicucci earned the game’s first and second star, respectively, while Smith earned third star. The Pilots-Kodiaks series schedule is as follows: • Game 1 – Tuesday, March 5, 7 p.m., MSA Arena • Game 2 – Wednesday, March 6, 7:15 p.m., Aldergrove Community Arena • Game 3 – Friday, March 8, 7:30 p.m., MSA Arena • Game 4 – Date and time TBA, Aldergrove Community Arena • *Game 5 – Tuesday, March 12, 7 p.m., MSA Arena • *Game 6 – Wednesday, March 13, 7:15 p.m., Aldergrove Community Arena HARRY HUNT PHOTO • *Game 7 – Friday, March 15, 7:30 The double-threat of Aldergrove Kodiaks’ twins Scott and Spencer McHaffie contributed a power play p.m., MSA Arena goal in the 4-1 final victory over the Ridge Meadows Flames on Feb. 27 at Aldergrove Arena. *if necessary
Midgets to provincial championships By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star
Aldergrove’s Midget A1 team is headed for the provincial hockey championships next week. The 16 boys, aged 15 to 17, and coaches are elated with the victory at the Final Four games in Aldergrove Arena last weekend. It was a challenge but the team came together, following a rough start when they moved up into Tier 2 play at Christmas. The team opened the
Final Four with a 1-1 tie with Vancouver Minor, followed by a 5-3 loss to Mission. However, their 4-3 win over North Delta ended the series and qualified them for the provincial championships in West Kelowna from March 16 to 21. The team is coached by Scott McCarthy, assisted by his sons Kyle and Merk, and Lyall Sharman is team manager. In related news, Sharman says the International Friendship

Hockey Tournament is coming together. This event is coming to Aldergrove Arena for the second time this year, on March 15 to 24. Aldergrove Minor Hockey has participated in the tournament since it was founded. It will be a massive undertaking, as there will be 182 youths, with 11 teams from six countries playing at the bantam and peewee levels. There are 55 games planned and the focus is not on win-
ning but rather fostering friendships. About 60 homestay families in Aldergrove will be hosting the visiting youngsters, with each family hosting a minimum of two youths who are paired for the stays. Community businesses and families have been very supportive of the tournament, and numerous activities have been organized. Special events include a Friendship Hockey Tourmanent night at the
Abbotsford Heat home game on March 23 that will have 500 guests from Aldergrove attending. There is also an auction at the Aldergrove Legion on March 21 and a banquet and dance, already sold out, at Langley Banquet Centre on March 21. Sharman says 23 Aldergrove families have already signed up to participate in the 2015 tournament, which will be hosted by New South Wales in Australia.
Rugby men notch pair Aldergrove Star
Langley Rugby Club’s 1st and 2nd Division games were played under severe weather conditions down at their home field on Crush Crescent on Saturday. Both teams came out victorious over Kamloops who traveled with solid numbers for the Saturday afternoon matches. Langley Seconds won a tight, hard-fought game 7-0 with some great play from newcomers Sterling Grotzke and Scott Balzer. Langley won a convincing victory in the First Division, 63-3, fielding one of their strongest sides of the year. Kolby Brezden returned to the centres where his strong running and relentless tackling stood out, along with flanker Richard Pierce, who has come off a solid campaign with the Valley Mens representative side. The Valley Men won the Mckecknie cup (a competition going back over 100 years) in February with two wins over Vancouver Island Crimson Tide and Vancouver Wave. Pierce was named forward of the Match in both games.

Grueling Pitt Meadows Road Race to hit pavement Aldergrove Star
The 2013 edition of Barry’s Roubaix is set to descend upon the roads and dykes of Pitt Meadows on Sunday, April 7 – the same day as the Paris-Roubaix race in France, which inspires this local version. Presented by Local Ride Bike Shop, it is a road cycling race modeled after the legendary
European Spring Classics. “Paris-Roubaix is famous for its long and arduous sections of cobblestones, which we try to mimic by running our course along the rough dyke. Pitt Meadows is also often battered by winds, which will challenge the racers, just like in the real Paris-Roubaix,” said race organizer Barry Lyster.
Lyster makes the Pitt Meadows version of the event more accessible to a wider range of riders than the French version, however. Registration is available at: h t t p : / / w w w. k a r e l o . c o m / r e g i s t e r . php?BID=57&BT=10#Ev12886 Information: http://www.localride.ca/ wp/2013/01/22/barrys-roubaix-2013-info/
Aldergrove to host Western Canadian Bantam AAA Baseball Tournament Aldergrove Star
Aldergrove has been awarded as host city for the Western Canadian AAA Bantam Baseball tournament by BC Minor Baseball. This will be an eightteam tournament, featuring the top 13 to 15 year old western teams, with Langley-Aldergrove’s team automatically receiving an entry into the tournament. Dean Cantelon will be the general manager of the Langley-Aldergrove team and Darren Rock is the head coach. The team consists of the top 11 Langley players and one Aldergrove player. Seven of the players were also on the 2011 Langley Little World Series team which attended the Uganda Goodwill event. Cantelon said that organizers are seeking sponsorship from the local businesses and com-
munity to offset costs of hosting the Western Ca-
nadian tournament. The projected cost to run this
high profile tournament is $10,000. Call Dean Cante-
lon for more information: 778-242-2526.
