The Magic Flute, West Coast style Mozart’s The Magic Flute is both a romantic story of lovers in the centre of a battle between the forces of light and darkness, as well an allegorical tale of the quest for life’s meaning, says Vancouver Opera, which is mounting a visually stunning West Coast interpretation at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Director Robert McQueen consulted with a panel of First Nations artists about the legends and traditions of BC’s coastal First Nations to provide a fresh look at Mozart’s work. “Coastal traditions dictate equality of the sexes, allowing McQueen to eliminate much of the language criticized as sexist in recent years,” the VO says. Many First Nations contributors have played a role in set design, choreography

and costumes. Sarastro’s followers are clothed in representative dress of BC’s 10 coastal Nations and the set design represents the three planes of land, water and air central to First Nations mythology. Oh, and let’s not forget the singers! Expect stand-out performances by John Tessier, Simone Osbourne, Joshua Hopkins, Phillip Ens and Marion Newman and VO mainstage debuts from Teiya Kasahara, Michael Barrett, Melody Mercredi, Leah Alfred and Sylvia Szadovszki. It is sung in English but the spoken dialogue is in both English and a dialect of the Musqueam language, projected on a screen above the stage. Evening performances are March 9, 12, 14 and 16 at 7:30pm with 1:30pm matinees on March 10 and 17. Tickets available at VancouverOpera.ca. Tim Matheson photo

Back in November. we told you about a movie written and directed by Vancouver stuntman Kirk Caouette, who also stars in Hit ‘n’ Strum. It’s about how two worlds literally collide when a driven young lawyer (Michelle Harrison) runs into Cauoette, who plays a homeless busker, with her car. The next day, when she walks by him and realizes he’s been there every day without her noticing, they begin a friendship that changes their lives. Shot in and around Gastown, it was inspired by a homeless man whose voice, and story capitivated Caoeutte. The film opens Friday, March 8 at Fifth Line Cinemas, 2100 Burrard.

It could happen to you: These Metro Vancouverites got their big breaks by trying out for Van Fashion Week (Mar. 19-24; VanFashionWeek.com)

ADAM DAWDA Height: 6’3”

KANIKA SASAN Age: 23

Astrological sign: Leo

How he was discovered: Two weeks after meeting with the agency director of Numa models I was told to try out at the VFW casting call. Having never before done runway, I was nervous. With the whole five minutes of walking practice I’d received a couple days prior, I went into the casting and did my best. To my somewhat surprise I got an email one week later saying I was in!

Cathedral Place 150-925 West Georgia Street 604.685.1117 Mon-Fri 9:30-6 • Sat-Sun 10-4

Something that surprises people about him: I love to play highly competitive (possibly geeky) computer games like Dota and Starcraft2. I welcome any challengers.

How he was discovered: Some friends had gotten cast for VFW last year, and they said it was a lot of fun; as well they made quite a few connections in the industry, so I decided to come down this year to try out. I’m always early to castings because they can get so busy, so the first day I showed up about an hour early, and after having a seat inside, I was asked by Jamal (the producer) to walk a few times, and after that I was asked to be a part of VFW.

MARCH HOT TICKETS “It is a shame, a downright, crying shame that adults are bullies — it is absolutely pathetic,” says Mary Zilba (second from right) of what she is exposed to on the reality TV show Real Housewives of Vancouver. She wants to use her celebrity to speak out about bullying and support causes such as the Shooting Stars Foundation. She’s singing Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together at the March 23 Motown Meltdown fundraiser at the Commodore. (For more information, go to ShootingStarsFoundation.org.)

At home with a Real Housewife Mary Zilba talks about Real bullies, her new album, and her quest for a man to cuddle with on the couch By Gen Handley

S

o what do you think?” “They look great,” I reply. Mary Zilba glances at me a bit skeptically. “Really?” “Yeah, you look great,” I say. She looks beautiful, but I’m trying desperately to balance that sometimes blurry line of creepiness and honesty. “Umm, yeah. That’s a nice look…I like the white.” I look awkwardly at Mary’s Yorkshire terrier, George who’s obliviously and happily gnawing away on a bone. We are sitting in Zilba’s living room, more than 30 storeys above False Creek, looking at some recent promo shots for her cosmetics line, BUFF Beauty. In the photos, she’s wearing nothing more than a white sheet. “Of course he’s going to say that — you’re sitting right next to him,” says Laura Yake, operations manager of BUFF Beauty and a close friend of Zilba’s, who was working on her laptop across the room. Before joining Real Housewives of Vancouver, Zilba was known as pop singer, having several top-40 hits since the late 90s. And, when she has the time, Zilba’s still releasing music — she has a covers album, Hero, coming out — and performing live, which she’ll be doing at Motown Meltdown March 23 at the Commodore. “I love R&B and the whole Motown sound,” says Zilba, who will be covering Al Green’s Let’s Stay Together at the show. She grew up in Toledo, about an hour away from the birthplace of Motown — Detroit, Michigan. “A lot of people have done that song — Tina Turner, Marvin Gaye, the list just goes on — but it’s one of my favourites and I’ve always loved it. When I was Miss Ohio, I sang it.” But despite a presence in music, Zilba is probably more known for her role on the Real Housewives of Vancouver. While she admits the fighting and drama on the reality show has taken an emotional toll, she also credits it for being a stepping stone back into music.

WEVancouver.com

“It’s something, I knew, that would give me opportunities to do things that I’m passionate about,” she says. Zilba’s list of passions also includes helping a number of charitable causes. This was a big influencer when deciding to perform at the Motown Meltdown, which is contributing its proceeds to the Shooting Stars Foundation, a group dedicated to helping front-line AIDs agencies. “I saw who the event was supporting and felt like I had to do it at that point,” she says, looking into her tumbler glass of white wine. “My father always used to say, ‘If you do something for someone and more than two people know about it, then you did it for the wrong reason.’ Yes, what my father said was true but, on the other hand, when you have a public platform, you can raise awareness at a level you weren’t able to do without some celebrity.” Another charity she works very hard for is the anti-bullying cause of Pink Shirt Day. Her support is rooted in the pain of one of her sons being bullied but it’s clear, as she talks more, that she has had very personal and recent experiences with it as well. “Yeah I’ve been bullied on the show, but that is not why it’s important to me — it’s about helping the youth for me,” she says. She shakes her head. “But it is a shame, a downright, crying shame that adults are bullies — it is absolutely pathetic.” “I know my kids don’t like it when they see it on the show,” she continues, still wincing at the sting of those memories. “And what kind of example is that to called somebody fat and a loser and chipmunk cheeks — it’s horrible when you pick on the physical traits of somebody.” So what’s more difficult? Reality TV or the music industry? “Reality TV,” she says without a pause. “It’s tough. I mean I went into this show thinking they were going to have a field day trying to set it up to get us to argue. I went in there being totally authentic and totally true to who I am and you can see me in the show being genuinely hurt. That’s real. Our show’s not scripted and people think that but I’m like, ‘It’s not scripted — who would take that role of Jodi?’ You’d have to pay me millions to take that role.” But despite the drama, despite the incredibly hectic schedule of being a mother, a singer, a reality show personality and whatever else she is that week, Zilba says she’s ready to settle down with a guy. “I’m a great girlfriend,” she says matter-of-factly. Zilba’s last serious relationship ended just before she started the show. “I’m not really interested in dating. I just want to find a partner. I don’t know, I’m a better girlfriend than a date. Like, how great

is it to lay on the couch and watch a movie together, have some wine and pass out.” At that point I see our wine glasses, side by side on the coffee table, with a rom-com like When Harry Met Sally glowing on the flat screen in front us. My mind wanders...

“So anything else?” she asks, yanking me out of my revery. “Sorry?” “Any more questions? I think I talked your ear off,” she says with a laugh. “No, not at all — you’ve been great,” I say.

B

orn in Belarus, but raised in Israel, a captivated 14-year-old Vitaly Beckman watched David Copperfield perform on the television set in his family’s Haifa

home. “I was curious to find out how he did some of those things,” says Beckman with a thick Israeli accent. “He did some grand-scale magic but he also did some small-scale magic with a couple of rubber bands. I couldn’t figure out how he did it, so I thought, if it were me, how would I create an illusion like that? “I developed something and showed it my family and they liked it, and I showed it to my friends and they liked it, so I wanted to show them more. I discovered that I had ideas of my own, ideas of new magic, new illusions that I could create.” Beckman (or simply Vitaly, as he’s known on stage) has lived in Vancouver for four years. He has built an impressive reputation as an illusionist by wowing onlookers around the Lower Mainland with his original, art- and natureinspired tricks. “I try to not to watch other magicians. I try to get inspired by sources outside of magic. Like, I have a thing with leaves that was inspired by the sight of falling leaves.”

Beckman approaches his magic like an art form and like any artist, he hopes to inspire those who experience it, making the creativity contagious. For example, during his upcoming shows, Beckman will be performing a trick that removes the person’s image from their driver’s licensc. “For a lot of people, life becomes like a routine and they don’t pay attention to the special moments. When you watch magic you start to notice these things in every day life. I try to make it inspiring, so that when people go home, they have a feeling anything can be possible. Maybe their dreams can be possible and maybe they can achieve more.” So has magic every helped him with meeting women? “Hmm,” he ponders seriously. “Not really, because in every day life I try not to show off and use magic for those purposes. I treat more as an art. For people who need help with the ladies, they just need to be confident and believe in themselves. I don’t think a trick will help them.” Beckman will be performing a string of shows in Vancouver at The Cultch March 8 to 10 and March 15 to 17. Women’s intuition Nominated for an Artistic Achievement award at the Women in Film Festival, editor Lara Mazur reflects on 30 years in the industry By Curtis Woloschuk

G

iven that we’re speaking two days after the number of Oscars presented to women (nine) were severely outnumbered by the sexist salvos launched by host Seth MacFarlane, it seems only right to ask Lara Mazur how she’s seen attitudes towards women change during her three decades in the film and television industry. “When I first started, I worked with a number of women filmmakers telling women’s stories,” she says, referring to films such as Martha, Ruth & Edie and American Boyfriends. In the Lara Mazur years since those early collaborations with Norma Bailey, Deepha Mehta, and Sandy Wilson, she’s seen positive signs in terms of both the increased presence and improved standing of women in the Canadian industry. “There are a lot more writers and directors who have made their mark and become part of the mainstream,” she suggests. “Hopefully that will continue to change.” It’s Mazur’s own “excellence in the telling of women’s stories” that’s seen the editor singled out by Women in Film & Televi-

sion Vancouver for an Artistic Achievement Award at their upcoming Vancouver International Women in Film Festival (kicking off March 7 at Vancity Theatre). Cutting her teeth with the highly-regarded Winnipeg Film Group before moving to Vancouver in 1989, Mazur initially tried her hand at directing a couple of short films. “What I liked most of all about it was the magic of the editing room,” she recalls of those dalliances with directing. Rather quickly, she determined that her calling was in the editing bay rather than behind the camera. “It’s my favourite part of the filmmaking process,” she says of her chosen craft. “It’s where you get to recreate the story.” In filmmaking circles, it’s generally believed that a film is written three times: once by the screenwriter, again by the director and actors, and finally by the editor. Every editor has his or her own approach to cutting footage. Of her technique, Mazur says, “What I bring is my intuition. I’m a person who’s curious about people and what motivates people. I think I have a keen eye for an honest performance. I try to look for truth in the material. I like to collaborate with the director. In that collaboration, I’m able to be honest and direct.” Her candour, insight, and storytelling acumen have allowed Mazur to forge rewarding

“It’s my favourite part of the process. It’s where you get to recreate the story,” says film editor Lara Mazur of her chosen craft. One of her projects, Flashpoint, just took Best Dramatic Series at the inaugrual Canadian Screen Awards. Photo courtesy Flashpoint creative partnerships that have lasted for decades. The Pastor’s Wife, her most recent undertaking with the aforementioned Bailey, culminated with both the director and editor earning Canadian Screen Award nominations. (Flashpoint, for which she is an editor, won Best Dramatic Series.) Mazur admits that receiving an “achievement award” lends itself to reflection. Looking back at the first three decades of her career, she fondly recalls her early work with Allan Kroeker, whose projects earned her first editing credits and helped her establish a foothold in the industry. “I think it’s the best job. That I get paid for it is incredible,” she enthuses. “But, I also do projects for love as well. I’m about to do a low budget feature with a talented young director.”

This new talent would be Ana Valine, whose first feature film – Sitting on the Edge of Marlene – has been mentored by Denys Arcand (The Barbarian Invasions) and will star Suzanne Clément, winner of Best Actress at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. The passion Mazur feels for Marlene is evident as she praises Valine’s ability to attract such remarkable talent to her project. “It’s amazing. I think she’s going to be an up-and-comer.” Meanwhile, Valine undoubtedly looks at Mazur’s career accomplishments with similar admiration. hristina Sicoli jumps up from her window seat at Nelson the Seagull to give me a big hug when I arrive (late as usual.) I apologize for the bus that never came and she takes out her iPhone to show me one of those picture-is-worth-a-thousand-words photographs of two women on her bus. We sit down and instantly start sharing stories as if it’s been way too long since we’ve last had a chance to chat. And then, almost at the same moment and almost with the same thought, we pause. “Wait a minute,” each of our brains is telling us, “you’ve never met this woman before in your life.” That, in a nutshell, is what Christina Sicoli is like. She’s one of those people who in the course of a one-hour interview — which is supposed to be about her acting career — has me surreptitiously writing that “she’d be a terrific best girlfriend” in my notebook. As far as first impressions go, she must have a waiting list of best friends. But before we get to my Five Reasons Why Christina Sicoli Deserves to be a Star, let’s talk about that acting and comedy career. She did a lot of work with Second City back in her Toronto days. Here in Vancouver, she co-wrote some of the episodes in the Insayshable web series, in which she played the comic foil to her lookingfor-love-in-all-the-wrong-places girlfriend, Saysha (played by her real-life friend and the creator of the show, Amy Matysio.) Sicoli just wrapped up a role in Afterparty, a film by the new Vancouver start-up, Sociable Films. “It felt like I was hanging out with friends for six weeks,” she says. Friends, indeed. One of her fellow actors in the film is David Milchard, with whom she will star in a “real-life” Big Italian Wedding this May.

o what’s a key characteristic of Scottish music? “Musically, there are some really obvious time signature characteristics that mark the music apart from other types of music,” explains Scottish singer Maeve Mackinnon. “The most obvious ones are the rhythms of the music. For example, in Scottish dance music, you have the Strathspey rhythm, or the ‘Scotch snap’, the jig and reel rhythms. But with song, it’s the unusual scale of the music, the sound and feel of the language.” Vancouver will get to experience the Scotch snap when Mackinnon performs at the 2013 CelticFest, taking place until March 17 at a number of clubs, pubs and venues located around downtown. With Mackinnon, the lineup this year also consists of the Mahoney & Sons Celtic Village and Street Market (Celtic food, artisans and music), Irish comic Brendan Grace, Vancouver band The Town Pants, some scotch tasting and of course, the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This year has more than 75 acts and all are free except for four events. “We’ve programed some really good Celtic music and other great acts like the Godfather of Irish comedy — Brendan Grace — who’s playing the FanClub on Granville Street on March 9,” says CelticFest executive director Ian McAteer. “I’m a fan. I find it difficult to talk to him on the phone and not laugh — even when he’s serious.” McAteer, a Dublin native, says that while

It’s a way to get the entire community together — we’re having a lot of different people like Special Olympics medal winners, the Irish Heritage Society and Chinese cultural groups as well.” Mackinnon has played in Vancouver several times and it wasn’t hard to convince her to come back for the festival

because she loves the city and she’s also very proud of her culture. “For me, growing up in the west of Scotland, the Gaelic West Coast has been very much part of my soul,” says the twice-nominated Gaelic Singer of the Year. “In addition to writing my own songs, I have been lucky enough to have met and been taught by some fantastic tradition bearers who have been kind enough to pass on songs to me — I like to think of the tradition as a ‘carrying stream’ where I pass on songs to other singers and pupils. This is the essence of Gaelic culture, where traditions are maintained, mutate and pass on.”

Now that the restaurant’s executive chef, Bradford Ellis, is the new executive chef at Q4 al Centro downtown, Jolin is replacing Ellis at the West Broadway location. “Chef Jolin has read that French cooking celebrates the chef, while Italian elevates the ingredients. f the 16 chefs who have come from across Canada to battle it out for the Season 3 title of Top Chef Canada, five are from the West Coast. While all may have a voracious appetite for competition and an unending passion for cooking, our very own chefs from Vancouver and Vancouver Island may have a bit of an advantage. Matt Stowe, Kayla Dhaliwall, Caitlin Hall, Clement Chan and Daniel Hudson all agree that cooking here is a chef’s dream. Where 30 years ago an ingredient-focused style of cooking was called California Cuisine, and practised mainly in that abundant state, today’s chefs across our beautiful country have embraced the use of fresh-and-local as “just the way we work.” “We are so lucky that we have access to so many fresh, local products year ‘round,” says Matt Stowe, a development chef for Cactus Club restaurant, who trained at the Culinary Institute of America and cooked in NYC’s finest kitchens. While he did miss his wife and son during the competition, he made an unexpected discovery. “I really liked being on camera,” he admits with a charming smile. Kayla Dhaliwall, executive chef at Tapenade Bistro in Steveston, graduated from VCC’s culinary arts program. She loves to use local game and seafood to re-create the traditionally vegetarian Punjabi dishes she cooked with her grandmother — spicy potato roti are now stuffed with savoury duck confit, and she uses other Asian influences to put a new twist on classic comfort food. “My favourite style of cooking is the one I don’t

Splashes of cheer from the wine world CityCellar By Kurtis Kolt

A

s much as I love the Vancouver International Wine Festival, it’s always nice to exhale when it’s over and get back to “real life.” I did the math and between Wine Fest, other tastings and personal research, I’ve probably swirled, sniffed, sipped and spat around 1,200 wines over the last month. Besides a few purple-stained teeth and notebooks, there are always reminiscences of particular bottles that linger long after tasting, of ones that provided extraordinary value and

enjoyment. The best is when those special wines aren’t the obvious firstgrowth Bordeaux or ridiculously-rare Italian gems, though those certainly can remain top-of-mind, but “everyday wines” that are affordable and I can share widely. Here are two of them:

Orofino 2011 Riesling | Similkameen Valley, BC | $20-23 | Private wine stores/winery direct The wind-swept, rugged terrain of British Columbia’s Similkameen Valley offers a fresh, crisp and clean Riesling wonderfully crafted by John and Virginia Weber. If you don’t like the sweeter side of the grape, then this is a version that will be right

up your alley. A squeeze of lime with white peach, grapefruit pith and a handful of minerals; gulp it down with fresh seafood, oysters, ceviche and so on.

Nicolas Perrin 2011 Syrah Viognier | Rhône Valley, France | $25-ish | Private Wine Stores A tag team effort between legendary Rhône families, Jaboulet from the north and Perrin from the south, has resulted in a collaboration focussed on small-batch wines sourced from top growers and sub-appellations around the region. The Syrah offers classic earthy, meaty character loaded with spice, while the Viognier fleshes things out with a splash of stone fruit. Grill up some lamb and go to town.

Sommelier of the Year Now that we’ve had a little wine, allow me to make a toast! A hearty congrats to Samantha Rahn, the wine director at Whistler’s Araxi Restaurant who won the Sommelier of the Year award at this year’s Wine Festival. When not snowboarding through every nook and cranny of the mountains, she’s built a very laudable wine program over the last seven years, offering an engaging balance of the best of British Columbia and the finest regions spanning the globe.

JOEY Bentall One I ensured a little extra space in this week’s column to offer a pat on the back to Jessica Bryans, along with her cellar manager, Lisa Cook. A Blueprint for success Adelphia Group and Blueprint Events have worked together for years. Now they’ve officially merged. They’re celebrating by re-opening Celebrities By Martha Perkins

T

here’s a geometrical term for what happens when two lines come together to form the top of a pyramid. Now there’s a new term for when that happens in Vancouver’s entertainment industry: Blueprint. Adelphia Management Group and Blueprint Events have merged into Blueprint, making it a powerhouse in Vancouver’s club and concert scene. It brings together the club management expertise of the Kerasiotis family — who own the iconic Celebrities, Caprice and Shine, among other venues — and the concert moxie of Blueprint Events’ Alvaro Prol, who’s populated stages across the city with some of the most popular bands and DJs of our time. “Our careers are parallel,” says Bill Kerasiotis who, with his brother Chris, has been working with Prol since they first met in 1997. Prol has organized many of the events that filled Aldephia’s clubs and bars and through those experiences, they learned that they share the same approach to business. “There’s a natural symmetry.” “We’ve always watched out for each other and strategically planned [with the other in mind,]” Prol says. “We could do it without one another but together we can do better.” “If you try to go it alone,” Bill adds, “it doesn’t work these days.” The Kerasiotis brothers are the second generation of a quartet of Greek immigrants who arrived in Vancouver more than 40 years ago. Their late father, John, and three of his brothers started with a small Greek restaurant, Olympia Pizza, which is still owned by the family. Bill and Chris started

working in the family businesses as teenagers and got to know every aspect of what works and, often more importantly, what doesn’t work. “It’s never been an exponential growth growth thing; you have your highs and your lows,” Bill says. It’s not that the Adelphia Group simply kept getting bigger and bigger. Yes, they added more properties, but as the economy and people’s tastes changed, the company had to change too. The family has always had to be as nimble as the dancers who want to see and be seen at the city’s most popular clubs. Hence the most recent makeover of Celebrities. The Kerasiotises bought the Davie Street institution, which has hosted the likes of Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, in 1978. It closed for renovations for five years in the early part of the century and is re-opening again this week (after a much shorter hiatus for improvements.) They gutted the entire building and have put in a new sound system. “Celebrities, to me, is the epitomy of a dance club in Vancouver,” Bill says. “It’s just a free place — you can be a drag queen or a couple or whoever you want to be. The people who come there are open to that. There’s no club I love more than Celebrities.” This comes less than a month after the opening of their new venture, Colony Bar in Kitsilano, and a few months after taking over Shine in Gastown — a neighbourhood that is intriguing territory for Blueprint as an alternative for those who don’t want the Granville party scene. (Blueprint also organized the huge — 12,000 people — Boxing Day concert at BC Place.) But making the company better and stronger in Vancouver isn’t the only thing in Blueprint’s plans. They also hope to expand the franchise into other cities in Canada. “This merger is built on a good understanding of who does what and a vision of where we want to go,” Prol says. “You work hard and stay on the edge. You always have to stay ahead.”

After months of renovations, Bill Kerasiotis, Alvaro Prol and Chris Kerasiotis are excited about the re-opening of Celebrities, and the formation of their new company, Blueprint. Rob Newell photo

Movie Reviews

Haven’t we seen this before? 21 AND OVER

Starring Miles Teller, Skylar Astin, Justin Chon Directed by Jon Lucas, Scott Moore While attending a screenwriting conference a few years ago, I heard Jon Lucas share the secret of his and co-writer Scott Moore’s success with their script for The Hangover. During their meetings, the collaborators would dissect films that never quite fulfilled the considerable promise of their premise. Taking the amnesia concept of Dude, Where’s My Car? for a spin, they penned the highest grossing R-rated comedy in history. With 21 and Over, Lucas and Moore — who also serve as directors — have inexplicably abandoned this strategy. Instead, in a move reminiscent of the recent Dark Skies, they simply stitch together ideas that have already been

executed to perfection elsewhere. And so, we have two pals — Miller (Miles Teller) and Casey (Skylar Astin) — who, much like Superbad’s leads, have drifted apart. Nevertheless, they’ve reunited for the 21st birthday of their friend Jeff Chang (Justin Chon as a Harold/Kumar composite) in order to get him wasted. They suddenly find themselves in a “one crazy night” movie when the neophyte drinker blacks out — he’ll assuredly have quite “The Hangover” in the morning — and Miller and Casey are left to wonder, “Dude... Where’s Jeff Chang’s house?” Ultimately, 21 is akin to encountering Frankenstein’s monster — if the creature also had a puerile sense of humour grafted onto it. It elicits the occasional strained laugh, however, you can’t tear your eyes away from the sutures and staples that are barely holding the whole thing together. C.W.

Oz: experience the awe OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL

Starring James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis Directed by Sam Raimi Even Sam Raimi’s greatest admirers would be hard-pressed to claim that the geeky filmmaker’s instincts are infallible. After all, this is a man who took Spider-Man 3’s $250-million budget and delivered a bloated excuse for a blockbuster bogged down with cringe-worthy dance sequences and dreadful adversaries. After getting back to his roots with the splatstick Drag Me to Hell, he now returns to the big leagues with this opulent prequel to The Wizard of Oz. Despite Disney’s considerable financial backing, what actually fuels the film is Raimi’s ability to rekindle the same scrappy resourcefulness that allowed him to make The Evil Dead, a certified cult classic, for little more than pocket change. Raimi’s ingenuity can also be glimpsed in Oscar

Diggs (James Franco), a low-rent circus magician in 1905 Kansas. When a familiar tornado whisks him off to Oz, he’s able to use his parlour tricks to convince the unstable witch Theodora (Mila Kunis) that he’s the “great wizard” the wonderland’s been waiting for. When Oscar soon teams up with the good witch Glinda (Michelle Williams) instead, the jilted, suddenly green-skinned Theodora and her manipulative sister Evanora (Rachel Weisz) raise PG-rated hell — kicking off an epic brouhaha featuring Munchkins and flying monkeys. While the story here is as simple to follow as a yellow brick road, Raimi executes it with panache, offering touching callbacks to earlier plot points, clever tributes to the 1939 classic, a moral for the kids (goodness trumps greatness), and an astonishing climax that’ll remind every movie-lover of the awe they experienced when they first encountered the silver screen. — Curtis Woloschuk

Thursday, March 7, 2013 WE Vancouver ganger, your shadow, your mirror self, and your stuntperson.

Free Will Astrology #Z 3PC #SF[TOZ r Week of March 7 PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): “Telling someone your goal makes it less likely to happen,” says musician and businessman Derek Sivers. Numerous studies demonstrate that when you talk about your great new idea before you actually do it, your brain chemistry gives you the feeling that you have already accomplished it — thereby sapping your willpower to make the effort! The moral of the story: Don’t brag about what you’re going to do someday. Shut up and get to work. ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): Maybe you’re not literally in exile. You haven’t been forced to abandon your home and you haven’t been driven from your power spot against your will. But you may nevertheless be feeling displaced. It could be due to one of the conditions that storyteller Michael Meade names: “We may experience exile as a lack of recognition, a period of transition, an identity crisis, a place of stuckness, or else having a gift and no place to give it.” The good news, Meade says, is that exile can rouse your irrepressible motivation to get back to your rightful place. TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20): Do you have a recurring nightmare that has plagued you? If so, I suspect it will recur again soon. Only this time, Taurus, you will beat it. You will trick or escape or defeat the monster that’s chasing you. Congratulations on this epic shift, Taurus. Forever after you will have more power over the scary thing that has had so much power over you. GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 20): The following request for advice appeared on Reddit. com: “My identical twin is stuck in an alternate dimension and she can only communicate with me by appearing as my own reflection in mirrors and windows. How can I tell her I don’t like what she’s done to her hair?” This question is a variant of a type of dilemma that many of you Geminis are experiencing right now. I’m happy to say that you will soon get an unprecedented chance to commune directly with your alter egos. Your evil twin will be more available than usual to engage in meaningful dialogue. CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): Usually I advise Cancerians to draw up precise borders and maintain clear boundaries. As a Crab myself, I know how important it is for our well-being that we neither leak our life force all over everything nor allow others to leak their life force all over us. We thrive on making definitive choices and strong commitments. I now want to grant you a temporary licence to get a little wild and fuzzy. Don’t overdo it, of course, but explore the smart fun you can have by breaking some of your own rules. LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): In the course of formulating his theory of evolution, Charles Darwin read many books. He developed a rather ruthless approach to getting what he needed out of them. If there was a particular part of a book that he didn’t find useful, he simply tore it out, cast it aside, and kept the rest. I recommend this as a general strategy for you in the coming week, Leo. In every situation you’re in, figure out what’s most valuable to you and home in on that. VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22): Here’s a passage from Charles Dickens’ novel Great Expectations: “It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade.” Virgo, I suspect your life may be like that in the coming days, with high contrasts between vivid sensations. The nature of your opportunities may seem warm and bright one moment, cool and dark the next. If you regard this as interesting rather than difficult, it won’t be a problem, but rather an adventure. LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 22): “I worked as a hair stylist in Chicago’s Gold Coast for 20 years with some of the most gorgeous woman and men in the world,” writes sculptor Rich Thomson. “Once I asked a photographer who shot for the big magazines how he picked out the very best models from among all these great-looking people. His response: ‘Flaws. Our flaws are what make us interesting, special, and exotic. They define us.’” Meditate, Libra, on how your supposed imperfections are essential to your unique beauty.

Just assume that you will find useful cues and clues wherever you go. Use these questions as a starting point as you deepen your connection with your specific neighborhood on planet Earth. Get yourself grounded! CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19): There’s a writer I know whose work is brilliant. She’s a champion of political issues I hold dear. She’s well-read and smarter than me. Yet her speech is careless and sloppy. She rambles and interrupts herself. She says “uh,” “you know,” and “I mean” so frequently that I find it hard to listen, even when she’s saying things I admire. I considered telling her about this, but decided against it. She’s an acquaintance, not a friend. Instead, I resolved to clean up my own speech — to make sure I don’t do anything close to what she does. This is a strategy I suggest for you, Capricorn AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): The German word Verschlimmbesserung refers to an attempted improvement that actually makes things worse. Be on guard against this, Aquarius. I fear that as you tinker, you may try too hard. I’m worried you’ll be led astray by neurotic perfectionism. To make sure that your enhancements and enrichments will indeed be successful: 1. Think about how to make things work better, not how to make things look better. 2. Be humble and relaxed. Don’t worry about saving face and don’t overwork yourself. 3. Forget about short-term fixes; serve long-range goals.

Naysayer fights back I’m glad to see some opposing commentary to all of us naysayers and critics of how City Hall and the province plan, prioritize and implement infrastructure projects. (Rants, Feb. 28) The retort from Tony Flello and Anonymous regarding my opinions about the Comox-Helmcken greenway, bike lanes, and public transit are misconstrued. Like many other of my neighbours, I am not a supporter AT ALL of the Comox-Helmcken greenway. These writers comments referred to public consultation about HOW it was going to happen. A non-supporter doesn’t care HOW it’s going to be done. The project was a done deal anyways, whether I participated in the ‘consulting’ process, set up to give all us WestEnders the feel-good illusion of participation. The letters mailed out through the neighbourhood arrived AFTER the digging up of Comox had started! Comox and Helmcken were just fine the way they are. We already have a choice of beautiful seawall lanes and other bike lanes (at more level grade) that connect Yaletown to Stanley Park.

Some great kids aged 12 to 18 who need a stable, caring home for a few months. Are you looking for the opportunity to do meaningful, fulfilling work? PLEA Community Services is looking for qualified applicants who can provide care for youth in their home on a full-time basis or on weekends for respite. Training, support and remuneration are provided. Funding is available for modifications to better equip your home. A child at risk is waiting for an open door.

I cannot justify a $5.5 million project when already existing infrastructure is in need of attention: crosswalks in particular. Not all of us are able to utilize cycling as a means of getting around; consider the elderly, infirm, poor and topography, and dominance of inclement weather. Now there’s angst again about TransLink’s further reduction of services, while the topheavy organization continues to leave the public standing in the rain as another full bus drives by. People, taxpayers and ‘arm-chair critics’ do well to challenge and question these issues. Paul Richards
