New perennials for 2013
One of my favorite parts of my job is when the catalogues come in, showcasing the new perennials for the upcoming spring. The anticipation is kind of like a kid getting their first look at the wish book at Christmas. The next part is to contain my enthusiasm in wanting to order them all! I will share some of the ones we will be growing this spring so you too can get inspired and plan a spot in your garden for a new addition. For that sunny spot we have a new Peony 'Lilian White' that has pure white double blooms that are fragrant and they have the added bonus of being deer resistant. Two new Echinacea - the first is 'Piccolina' - a compact 9-11" rose pink, double flowering and 'Julia' that has 4" single tangerine orange blooms, also a compact, well branched variety that will attract butterflies. The blooms of the new Iris Germanica 'Mexican Holiday' are a bright fiesta gold with maroon coloured falls. This plant grows to 36" and can have up to 11 buds per stem. Iris 'Orinoco Flow' is white with deep blue/violet edges, slightly fragrant and heavily ruffled - simply stunning! A shorter and more compact Russian Sage ‘Little Spire' is great for those smaller yards. It maintains nice form, has lavender-blue flowers and is great for attracting butterflies and hummingbirds as well as deer resistant. A new series of Garden Phlox 'Younique' comes in ‘white ‘and ‘bi-color’, which are a soft pink with a white eye and a dark violet speck in the center. This plant is a nice compact 14-16", very floriferous and mildew resistant. A new rudbeckia that deserves mention is 'Early Bird Gold'. It is similar to 'Goldstrum', but blooms much earlier in the spring right through to fall. 'Little Goldstar' is extremely floriferous and has a very compact habit to only about 12", making it great for the middle of the border. For the shadier areas we have some very beautiful Heucherella (which are a cross between a Heuchera and a Tiarella). 'Golden Zebra' really stands out with its bright yellow foliage and contrasting wide darkred markings along the veins. It grows into a dense 8-12" mound. 'Solar Eclipse' grows to 20" and has broadly scalloped, dark burgundy-brown foliage with lime green edging that maintains its color through all seasons. These are both great additions to brighten up that shady area. In part sun to shade, a new Digitalis, more commonly called 'Foxglove', has upward facing white flowers with speckled burgundy throats-very eye catching, strong and sturdy stems. The newest Cranesbill Geranium to add to our benches is 'Southcombe double'. This low growing, low maintenance ground cover type has unique, double bright pink blooms, is deer resistant and once established is drought tolerant. For a different Lamium we have 'Anne Greenaway', featuring chartreuse leaves with green centers and a silver stripe running down the middle and topped with pink blooms. A very cool new Lupine is ‘Tutti Frutti Mix', boasting large clumps with exceptional bi-color flowers up to 2 feet - can't wait to see them! We will also bring back a few plants that were new last year and more than proved themselves, making them worth mentioning again in case you missed them last year: Echium, also called 'Red Feathers' is very drought tolerant, will thrive on neglect and will grow in poorer soil-forms. Its low growing clumps of leathery foliage with feathery flower spikes of russet-red florets bloom in spring to early summer. Conca D 'Oro, what some "catalogues" call a lily tree and say can grow to 6', has huge upward facing 8" creamy white to golden colored trumpet shaped flowers. A really cool grass which is a relative of the famous Karl Forester is Calamagrostis Brachytrichia, also called 'Korean Feather Reed Grass' mid-size 3642" clumps with fluffy bottle-brush like plumes open slightly pink and dry to a bronze hue. These are just a few of the many coming for 2013, so come on down early to see the full line up - sometimes new plants are in short supply and sell out quickly. Till next time... happy gardening. Votes for Goats
Thanks to those who have been supporting the Good Ol’ Goats on their quest for stardom this last month! They are now in the top five, this section of voting closes March 7th at midnight EST. It has been a tremendous opportunity for these students to represent the B.C. Interior Region, and be listed amongst the rest of the artists. Angus Liedtke (Vocals, Banjo, Guitar) said “I am ecstatic and really appreciative of our fans, I am looking forward to where this will go in the future”. Investigation wraps up in condo fire
PHOTO SUBMITTED
Talented Pinewood Elementary School students performed the all-school musical review, “It’s Saturday” on Monday, March 4 before parents, friends and musical lovers at the Key City Theatre.
Submitted After two days of intensive investigation, the file has been closed on the fire at 1000 Peaks Lodge in Panorama. “We worked with engineers and the BC Safety Authority through the day Friday to complete the investigation. Due to the extreme heat in the area of origin, vital evidence was completely destroyed giving investigators no option other than to deem the cause undetermined,” says Columbia Valley Fire & Rescue Service Chief Jim Miller. “We have identified where the fire started and although the cause is undetermined, we can confirm that foul-play and humanrelated activities were not factors in the fire. It is a no-fault fire.” The investigation took over a day and a half to complete. The building has been now been turned over to the Resort and its security team. The fire, which broke out early Wednesday morning, completely destroyed the top floor of the 35-unit complex and caused extensive water damage throughout the building. “We do not have a damage estimate at this time; however, it will be significant,” adds Miller. Firefighters from the Panorama, Windermere, and Invermere Fire Departments managed to keep the fire contained to the top floor of the building.
Daycare vandalized Submitted
For two nights in a row, the Kids on Campus Daycare has been hit with acts of vandalism. Sometime overnight on the 3rd of March unknown vandals threw a log and a crowbar through the windows of the administration office. The daycare was able to secure these windows with plywood. Overnight March 4th, unknown vandals took liquor bottles, rocks and beverage containers and threw them through the other windows. The Campus Daycare is located at the College of the Rockies. Should any one have any information on who is responsible for this damage, they are asked to contact the Cranbrook RCMP (250 489-3471).

As community developers for the United Way, Better at Home program, Sandra Davis and Pat Wray have the task of estimating how many Cranbrook seniors are isolated, vulnerable and require in home non-medical services. We are living longer and the number of residents over the age of 80 continues to increase. As we age, other risk factors fall into play, such as physical demands, transportation and social isolation as we lose our friends and loved ones. Cranbrook has an opportunity to launch the new Better At Home program funded by the Ministry of Health to provide non-medical home support services such as light housekeeping, grocery shopping, transportation to appointments, simple home repairs, friendly visiting, light yard work and snow shoveling. How many seniors do we have in this community who could successfully maintain their independence at home with a little bit of practical support? In order for this to happen, we need the support and will of the community to identify priorities and make this program a reality for Cranbrook. Pat and Sandra aim to obtain as much public input as possible in a short period of time. We will be gathering input during February and early March through questionnaire format to seniors and service providers and then wrap up with a community meeting to share the information gathered and provide one last opportunity for area residence to provide input. Friday, April 5, 2013 at the Days Inn Ballroom on Kootenay Street N (formally Town & Country Inn) Seniors gathering: 9 a.m. – 12 noon a light lunch provided and transportation can be arranged with advanced notice. Stakeholders: 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Space is limited to 100 so please call early to register 250 464-4889 Pat or 250 489-4593 Sandra or by email: cbkbetterathome@gmail. com. You can also call for further information. For full details go to www.betterathome.ca

2013 PARCEL TAX ROLL REVIEW WATER AND SEWER FRONTAGE TAX ROLLS The Corporation of the City of Cranbrook has completed improvements to the water and sewer systems that are to be supported in part by a frontage tax levy imposed under the following bylaws:
“Feed the Need” with Curves this month Submitted Curves International announces its 15th Annual Food Drive, “Feed the Need,” and challenges Curves’ club members in the U.S. and Canada to meet a 100,000 donation goal during the month of March. Cranbrook Curves is asking its members and individuals from the community to donate bags of non-perishable food or cash to support their local food bank. In addition, Cranbrook Curves will waive the joining fee for new members who bring in a bag of non-perishable food or donate $30 to their local food bank during the month of March. When combined donations from all Curves clubs reach the 100,000 donation goal, Curves International will donate 10% of their March 2013 profits to “Blessings in a Backpack,” a non-profit organization that ensures that impoverished elementary school children are fed on the weekends throughout the school year. “This year’s theme, ‘Feed the Need,’ really represents both what we want to accomplish with this year’s food drive and what we do as a business,” said Carla Lowden, owner of Cranbrook Curves. “We want to help feed local families and school children who would otherwise go hungry on the weekends – and we also want to ‘feed the need’ of local women for a health and fitness program that fits their busy lifestyle.” Cranbrook Curves raised 2,167 pounds of food last year during the annual food drive. For more information about Cranbrook Curves, call 250-4172626 or visit www.curvescranbrook.com
