Mt. Timothy hosting birthday bash
Ken Alexander Free Press
Mt. Timothy Ski Area is celebrating its silver anniversary this year and the 25th birthday bash is scheduled for March 10 on the hill. As is the case with most memorable birthday parties, there will be prizes, games, food and a children’s colouring contest at the day lodge. The celebration’s Rad Retro Day gets underway at 9 a.m. and will include some great fun activities all day long and there will be a hotdog and hamburger barbecue on the deck of the day lodge. This birthday will see best-dressed prizes handed out for those who show up in their finest ski wear from the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and the ’90s. To kick things off, lift costs are going retro at $25 for adults, instead of the normal $40. While you’re there on the hill, be sure to play Tim’s Challenges for chances to win a season’s pass. Hill manager Adam Piccolo says all of the staff is looking forward to the anniversary party and they have a lot of great events planned to involve every member of the family. Noting there will be a couple of fun contests that will see the winners win season’s passes, he says the first will be the frozen T-shirt Smash and it takes place on the deck at 2:30 p.m. “We’re going to get the T-shirts soaking wet, twist them up and put them in the freezer. The first person who gets it on will win a season’s pass. “One of the director’s came up with the idea. We will charge a $25 entry fee and everyone gets to keep their shirts at the end.” It seems like a fun idea and I don’t think it will be easy, Piccolo says, adding it will take place on the deck of the day lodge. People will have to register for the contest at guest services in the day lodge and he notes they will only have 30 shirts to give away. The second opportunity to win a season’s pass will involve a scavenger hunt and the winner will need to answer 25 questions. “They will have to answer questions and find certain things around the ski area. There will be stuff inside the day lodge, stuff on the mountain and on the lift. “We won’t be charging anything for the scavenger hunt and registration starts at 9 a.m. in the new building and the scavenger hunt starts at 10.” Piccolo says they will also have 25 rubber ducks hidden around the mountain and they will be numbered and the finder will win the

corresponding prize. “Celebrating 25 years, we have to have something special going on. If you find a duck, bring it in to guest services and you win a prize.” They will be cutting a cake in the shape of a mountain and will be cutting it around the time of the T-shirt smash. Folks will also be able to walk through the new building where staff will have a mock setup that will show people what it will look
like next season. The chairlift will be operating from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., and area families are encouraged to come out and take advantage of the great snow conditions and great fun – who knows, you could also be taking home a great prize. Minister quits over ethnic memo
By Tom Fletcher Black Press
Richmond-Steveston MLA John Yap has resigned from the B.C. Liberal cabinet pending the outcome of an investigation into government conduct on outreach to ethnic communities. Premier Christy Clark told the legislature March 4 that Yap is stepping aside as advanced education and multiculturalism minister until an internal investigation is completed. Clark apologized for a third time in the legislature the same day, before being grilled by NDP MLAs about her office staff ’s involvement in the plan. Speaking to reporters after question period, Clark did not rule out resigning herself, depending on the outcome of an internal probe by her deputy minister. “When we have all the facts, and when the report is tabled, we will likely be required to take further action, and I will take that action,” Clark said. B.C. Liberal MLAs held an extended caucus meeting on March 4 to discuss a leaked
memo describing use of government resources to boost the party’s popularity with ethnic communities. Cabinet ministers held a hastily arranged meeting in Vancouver on March 3, and emerged united in support of Clark. One disputed point is a plan to apologize in the legislature this month for the “head tax” on Chinese immigrants, imposed by Ottawa from 1885 to 1935. Such apologies are proposed in the strategy memo as “quick wins” before the May 14 provincial election. Retiring B.C. Liberal MLA Kash Heed objected to the move on the weekend, telling CKNW radio that such an apology would be “hollow.” On March 4, the NDP released another document – a December 2011 spreadsheet describing a meeting to “target swing ridings” and “target ethnicities,” including Chinese, South Asian, Filipino, Korean, Vietnamese and Japanese. Clark announced on March 1 that she has accepted the resignation of her longtime assistant, Kim Haakstad, who distributed
the ethnic voter plan to party and government staff via their personal e-mail addresses. Haakstad, Clark’s deputy chief of staff, and “outreach” staff from the premier’s office are subject to an internal investigation ordered by Clark on Feb. 28. John Dyble, head of the public service, is to examine whether government resources were used to help deliver ethnic votes to the BC Liberal Party. The January 2012 draft strategy memo, leaked to the NDP, discusses ways to improve the governing party’s popularity with immigrant communities, including recruiting new members and spokespeople to call and write to ethnic media outlets. Clark issued an apology for the document, read in the legislature on Feb. 28 by Deputy Premier Rich Coleman. “The document did not recognize there are lines that cannot be crossed in conducting this outreach [to ethnic communities] and it is unacceptable,” the statement noted. “The language in this draft document and some of the recommendations are absolutely inappropriate.”

Seeds sought for South Cariboo elementary school students
By Sherry Stewart Thanks to the efforts of Kathy Provost and her team of “Rebel Gardeners,” all elementary school children from Lac la Hache to 100 Mile House and from Canim Lake to Bridge Lake, including those who are homeschooled, will be given packets of vegetable
seeds to plant this spring. The seed exchange program is sponsored by a group called “The Rebel Garden Zone Campaign,” which is hosted by the South Cariboo Sustainability Society. One of the goals of the The Rebel Garden Zone Campaign is to
encourage the people of 100 Mile House to grow gardens and to grow food – for themselves and others. To this end, the group plans to challenge all residents of the 100 Mile area to “try to collectively grow 100 different varieties of vegetables, fruits, nuts and berries over the summer,” says Provost.

Kathy Provost of The Rebel Garden Zone Campaign is asking for donations of organic and heritage vegetable seeds for the children of our community. The group plans to distribute the seeds to all area elementary school children in time for spring planting. Local businesses and individuals have been contributing, but more seeds are needed, either organic or heritage seeds – anything but GMO.
“Let’s see what we can actually grow in our community. We are challenging the people of 100 Mile House to show us how many varieties of fruits and vegetables can be grown in our area which is Zone 2 to Zone 4, depending on where you live. “We are being rebels because the growing season here can be challenging. Let’s see if we can grow 100 varieties here.” More seeds for the school children are needed, and there will be more information about The Rebel Garden Zone Campaign Challenge at the seed exchange on Seedy Saturday at the Creekside Seniors Activity Centre, March 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Seedy Saturday is sponsored by the Horse Lake Community Farm Co-operative and the South Cariboo AgriCulture Enterprise Centre. The Rebel Garden Zone Campaign will have a table at the Seedy Saturday event and will be accepting donated seeds then. The group can be contacted through the Sustainability website at southcariboosustainability.com/. The Seed Exchange is on Facebook at w w w. f a c e b o ok . com/SouthCariboo SeedExchange. Provost

As we get ready to move our clocks forward an hour on Saturday night (March 9) for the start of Daylight Savings Time (DST), ICBC is asking drivers to make an effort to adapt to the time change to help reduce the impact it could have on their driving skills. According to an ICBC survey, 34 per cent of British Columbia drivers admit the time shift affects them and makes them feel less alert after the time change. Studies show that the switch to DST can have a dramatic effect on disrupting our regular sleep cycle. Time change tips: • Plan to get to bed early on Saturday evening and go to bed at your regular time on Sunday to be ready for Monday commutes. • Be aware of how your body adapts to the time change and how that may affect your ability to concentrate and avoid hazards. • After many weeks of early sunrises, expect darker morning commutes and more vulnerable road users – cyclists and pedestrians – on the road as the weather warms up. • Prepare your vehicle for the change in conditions and darker morning commutes. Clean your vehicle’s headlights and check that they are all working properly, both high and low beam and tail lights.

Dix proposes independent ad review By Tom Fletcher Black Press
British Columbia’s auditor general should be empowered to review government advertising messages and determine if they are in the public interest or just a boost for the party in power, NDP Leader Adrian Dix said recently. The NDP plans to present legislation in February to set rules for government ads, such as the current “B.C. Jobs Plan” series that extols the strength of the provincial economy. Taxpayer-sponsored ads would not be able
to show the premier or other politicians, promote the party or create a “negative impression” of parties or other groups critical of the government. “Basically it will do what the Ontario law currently does, which is to have all government ads approved based on the criteria,” Dix said. “Partisanship is obviously one of those.” Dix said he didn’t recall a similar ad campaign run by Glen Clark’s NDP government in the late 1990s, but noted such a law would apply to all governing parties if it is
passed. Previous Social Credit governments engaged in similar preelection promotional efforts. The current ads have a budget of $15 million, which included paid announcements by Premier Christy Clark aired during Global TV’s evening news. Clark and Jobs Minister Pat Bell have defended the commercials as part of an effort to raise awareness of industrial development and skilled trades training opportunities.
Dix said the $15-million budget is about equal to the advertising budgets of both the NDP and B.C. Liberal parties in the run-up to the 2009 election. Elections BC rules government how much political parties can raise and spend, and limit how much can be spent in each constituency during the pre-election period and the month-long formal campaign. The B.C. Liberal government has made repeated efforts to put stricter limits on pre-
Taking action to support caregivers The Conservative government’s Family Caregiver Tax Credit (FCTC) is meant to assist Canadians coping with the added responsibilities of caring for infirm parents. Combined with previous improvements to the Medical Expense Tax Credit (METC), Kamloops-ThomsonCariboo MP Cathy McLeod says it now provides even more tax relief to Canadian families. “Our Government recognizes and values the important role of family caregivers.
Many Canadians make incredible personal sacrifices to care for a loved one – be it their child, parent, spouse, or other family member with a serious medical condition – often while holding down a job. That’s why we’re taking action to help lighten their load.” Since January 2012, the FCTC has been available to help assist Canadians coping with the added responsibilities of caring for infirm parents or relatives by

MORE FREE TICKETS TO BE WON! WEEK OF MARCH 10 TO MARCH 16, 2013
ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Sorting through feelings may not come easy to you, Aries. At some point it becomes necessary to voice your opinions and you may need to show a vulnerable side. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, a few complications could arise this week and how you react to them will be telling of how the rest of the month may proceed. Think about this before you act. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, this week is likely to be a wash because there is something that came up that has the potential to dominate all of your time for the next several days. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, though you may be anxious to help a friend out, you need to seriously consider whether you have the time to spare at this point in time. Putting yourself first is priority. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, someone is going to open up to you emotionally and you may get caught off guard by the level of intimacy. This could be the start of a long-lasting friendship. VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, let a particular situation cool down instead of adding extra fuel to the fire. Step away from a heated discussion if you feel like things may get out of control. LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, your heart may beat a little faster this week because of the excitement involved in meeting someone that has been on your mind. Be patient. SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, continue to discuss a financial situation with your significant other. Even if the discussion grows tiresome, talking it out is the best way to resolve the issue.
