The leader of the new hospital project promised the city’s business community there will be plenty of opportunities to bid on contracts and to supply goods and services. Tom Sparrow also stood by the P3 (public-private partnership) agreement to build the $266 million hospital and to maintain the facility for the next 30 years. “Canada is a real good garden for the incubation of P3s,” the hospital’s chief project officer said at the Campbell River Chamber of Commerce luncheon last Thursday, “(and) B.C. is the best province in dealing with P3s.” Critics, including local NDP MLA Claire Trevena, want to see the complete business plan and find out how much money the government has committed to the 30-year maintenance contract. So far though, the only firm number is the $600 million committed to building the local hospital and the new hospital in the Comox Valley. The real benefit, Sparrow added, is the long-term upkeep of the hospital facility. The contractor will be financially penalized if things aren’t in

his sexual advances, but they had intercourse. Emmons then left the room and retur ned later, she said, and they had sex again, but she couldn’t recall much of the second incident. Sometime in the early morning hours, she got out of bed and went to the living room where Emmons and the other young man were. They listened to music together for about an hour, may have smoked marijuana, and she left and walked home. She arrived at her mother’s home around 6 a.m. and went to bed still high from the drug. Later that day, she told her mother what had happened, but they didn’t report the matter to police. In fact, she returned to Emmons’ home to repay a loan she had received from a different man. T he alle g ed sexual assault was not reported to RCMP until a few days later after she told her father. And

after she told her dad, he went to Emmons’ home and confronted him. In response, Emmons threatened the father, a brother who also went to the residence, and the girl. During cross examination by the defence, the girl admitted she couldn’t remember everything from that night because she was “impaired or high on drugs.” Watt suggested the girl asked Emmons to get the other young men in the apartment to leave so the two of them could be alone. He also suggested that she initiated kissing Emmons in the bedroom. “I don’t agree with that,” she responded. However, she also admitted it was possible she consented to having intercourse. Watt suggested she only went to police to report the alleged sexual assault after she learned that Emmons had a new girlfriend

and he didn’t want to hang out with her anymore. After her testimony, the Crown dropped the sexual assault charge against Emmons while he pleaded guilty to uttering threats. Emmons has a recent criminal record with convictions for robbery, obstruction and breach of court orders. The court also heard he has been diagnosed with fetal alcohol and attention deficit disorders for which he receives a disability pension. He now lives in the Comox Valley and was supported at the trial by his girlfriend and two social workers from the John Howard Society. The girl’s family was there to support her. For the threats conviction, Emmons was given a 45-day conditional sentence to be served at his residence and one year probation. He was also ordered to have no contact with the girl or her family.

By age 14 she was drinking heavily two to three times a week, usually beer, vodka and whisky. The girl, who claimed s h e w a s s e x u a l ly assaulted, also smoked marijuana daily – sometimes getting it from her mother. Other illicit indulges i n c l u d e d e c s t a s y, cocaine and opiates, she told the court. “ H e r o i n ? ” a s ke d defence lawyer Jordan Watt. “That’s what I meant by opiates,” she calmly replied. The girl, whose name cannot be reported due to a publication ban, testified March 6 in Campbell River provincial court during the continuation of sexual assault and uttering threats trial. The accused, Troy Emmons, now 21, sat quietly in the front row and listened as the girl said she did not consent to having sex

with him on the night of July 27-28, 2011. “Did you want that [sex] to occur?” Crown prosecutor Bruce Goddard asked the girl. “No,” she replied. On the night in question, the girl went to a friend’s house where she recalls drinking two whisky and colas, and perhaps smoking a joint before she went to Emmons’ residence. There, she took a tablet of what she believed was ecstasy along with Emmons, who was then 19, and another young man. The drug, however, caused her to hallucinate, an experience she had not encountered before with ecstasy. Feeling unwell, the girl said she went to Emmons’ bedroom to lie down and from that point on, her recollections of the night were vague. She told the prosecutor that at some point Emmons entered the room and got into bed with her. She asked him to stop

MLA doesn’t like ferry fare hike KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR

The latest ferry fare hikes are like a bad joke to North Island MLA Claire Trevena. BC Ferries announced last Wednesday that ticket prices are going up by 4.1 per cent on all routes starting next month. “It’s effective April 1 – April Fools Day,” Trevena said. “I don’t think people are going to be laughing who use the ferries.” The rate hike means a one-way trip from De par ture Bay to Horseshoe Bay for a vehicle up to 20 feet will increase to $51.25 from the current fare of $49.25. For a foot passenger, that same trip will

increase to $15.50 from $14.85. A ferry trip from Campbell River to Quadra Island will cost $22.15, up from $21.30 for vehicles while the Quadra Island to Cortes route will increase to $25.80 from $24.80 for vehicles. Foot passengers will pay $9.45, up from $9.10, on the Campbell RiverQuadra run while on the Quadra-Cor tes route, foot passenger fares will increase to $11.10 from $10.65. The rate hike is the first of three anticipated fare increases approved by BC Ferries Commissioner Gord Macatee last October. Trevena said ironically this latest fare hike was announced just days after the

release of a report outlining findings from the B.C. government’s community ferry consultation meetings. “The report summarized what happened in those meetings and through the meetings it was clear the number one thing was we need to have the ferries treated as highways and we need to keep fares down because this is not sustainable,” Trevena said. “And the next day we see fares going up.” Trevena said she routinely hears from her constituents about how ferry prices are impacting island communities. “It hurts Cortes and Quadra badly but also people in Campbell River who can’t visit

their families or families that can’t come visit them because the ferry prices are too high,” said Trevena, who noted ferry costs also negatively affect spor ts teams and impact decisions surrounding school field trips. She said Island businesses are also being hit by the high cost of having to transport goods. “We’ re paying a ridiculous amount for what should be a highway,” Trevena said. “It’s really scary for families. “How are they going to live with another increase?” BC Ferries said in a news release the increases “are required due to the rising cost

of operating and capital expenditures.” In addition to raising fares, the corporation will also be making cuts to its service in an effort to save $26 million in operations by 2016. Transportation Minister Mary Polak said route cuts won’t be made public until June 30 at the earliest. Last year BC Ferries eliminated some sailings on the Duke Point (Nanaimo)-Tsawassen run because it was losing, on average, an estimated $50 per vehicle. BC Ferries said last year it plans to cut at least 100 sailings on its Vancouver Island routes, mostly late evening runs that typically don’t see a lot of volume.

CR Art Gallery executive director announces retirement

Art Gallery executive director Jeanette Taylor is retiring to concentrate on writing, gardening and family.

After 13 years at the helm of the Campbell River Art Gallery, executive director Jeanette Taylor has announced her retirement. Taylor, who came to the Gallery after many years on the curatorial staff at the Museum at Campbell River, has worked in the local cultural sector for decades, so she knew the challenges she would face when she joined the young CR Art Gallery in 2000. After seeing the success story the museum became, she could see what could be accomplished. Dur-

ing her 13 years on the job, she’s seen the CR Art Gallery blossom into the vibrant hive of cultural activity it is today. Taylor said when she arrived at the gallery, part of the current facility in the Centennial Building had been condemned, and she and curator Manon Staiger, both part-time employees, were crammed into tiny quarters in what is now the Gallery’s storage area. There were a grand total of five volunteers, and the Gallery offered about

six exhibitions a year, plus three or four programs. During Taylor’s years as executive director, the Gallery has grown exponentially and now boasts four staff members and a stalwart crew of 55 committed and talented volunteers. They offer up to 10 exhibitions a year, and dozens of classes and workshops annually. The Gift Shop and yearly Christmas Market both showcase and

support local artisans, and raise funds for the Gallery. The Campbell River Garden and Art Tour and the Wearable Art Fashion Show have become treasured community programs, looked forward to year after year. Taylor said none of it would have been possible without the support of a dedicated board of directors, as well as the volunteers who are the heart of the Gallery. Taylor is fascinated by local history. She’s

written four books, and is planning to hit the word processor to create more. She gardens, hikes, kayaks and leads heritage site tours, and plans to do more of all those things in her retirement. Gallery supporters will be heartened to know that although Taylor won’t be on the job she will still be a member of the Friends of CR Art Gallery and she plans to lend a hand as a volunteer as well.

These are all long-awaited developments and will keep the community buzzing for a few years. Promises have been made that there will be opportunities for local service providers to become involved. The general contractors for the hospital project will be mandated to seek out local supplies and services, project leader Tom Sparrow told the Campbell River Chamber of Commerce on Thursday. The hospital project is not without its controversy – of course, this is Campbell River – as there is general grumbling about the P3 (public-private partnership) nature of the project and MLA Claire

Trevena wants to see a complete business plan. These two massive projects are seemingly too big to stop now, barring some huge change in economic fortunes in the province, and, once again, we will have to live with the decisions made. At the end of it all, we should have a near-state-of-the-art medical facility and a safe, efficient power station. Additionally, local businesses will have had the opportunity to secure some stable work and with the right kind of foresight, this could spin off into benefits for the future. Put your hard hats on Campbell River, time to get to work.

The facts on eagle trees Re: “Need more eagle info” Diedre Pickford makes some good points in her letter of March 8, 2013. However she does not have all the facts so here are some answers to her questions: It would be pretty hard to miss two adult bald eagles flying in and out of a tree on a city-size lot from December when they generally begin building or restoring their nests until August when any progeny would fledge. The nests are large and the adult presence obvious. And yes, the tree in question was marked with a yellow diamond indicating it was a wildlife protected tree. And yes, the owner DID know there was a nest in the tree. He had already approached the city about the possibility of removing the tree and was told he could not. He also approached a local tree company who told him they would not fell the tree as there was an eagle’s nest in it. As to the guy who cut it down – didn’t he look up before he did? The nest was apparently pretty obvious. As far as trees that might be a danger, well those can be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Stompin’ Tom: The man, the legend, the piece of plywood

Took some time to contemplate the life and times of Stompin’ Tom Connors after he passed away last week. He was one of those performers who when I first became aware of him, I thought I was the only one who liked him. Then over the years I began noticing that others did too. Connors was a true folk hero that way. No record machine promoting him over the top. I once heard an American on the CBC’s Bill Richardson show talking about how he loves things Canadian, particularly the CBC, but confessed he didn’t get the Stompin’ Tom Connors thing. “And therein lies the difference,” Richardson drolled. Connors was as hick as they come

when you first looked at him. But if you dug deeper you found there was a double edge. His musical simplicity was actually very deep in that it was a channel right into the soul of this country. But on the other hand, he could be quite clever and in fact very soulful. And that soulfulness was sincere and strong and it was wrapped up in a pride for this country that we are only beginning to emulate in recent years. The Vancouver Olympics was Canada’s coming out party for expressive nationalism. Stompin’ Tom had been doing it for decades. Heck, he even returned his Juno awards in the Seventies to protest Junos being given to Canadian artists who left the country to live in the

U.S. to develop their careers – which, of course, at that time would be just about all of them. Hey, I fully understand the need to do that, even today, but you had to admire Connors’ gesture. It took guts. It was also seeming career suicide. It was a good thing he was as true to his nationalism as he was because it endeared him to thousands of fans and created a following that was almost completely outside the music industry machine. Thank goodness for the CBC because they had the brilliant idea to commission Connors to write a theme song for their then-new consumer watchdog program Marketplace. In that inimitable way, Connors pointed out the hypocrisy of consumer economics.

“There’s another sale on somethin’; we’ll buy it while it’s hot. And save a lotta money spendin’ money we don’t got.” Simplistic. Barely literate. But so insightful. And here I want to branch out to the CBC. Thank goodness for the public broadcaster. They commission Connors to write an iconic song. Probably paid him some much needed coin for it too. It immediately put me in mind of the value of a public broadcaster not just airing and promoting Canadian cultural content but even stimulating its production. I’m a big Gordon Lightfoot fan too and Connors is like the poor man’s Lightfoot. Where Connors was a down-to-earth, nitty gritty, Continued on A9

Railroad Trilogy. As brilliant a song, as Canadian a song as you’ll ever get. Whenever I think of actions like this I think thanks for the CBC. Private broadcasters would never do anything like this. All they ever want to

do is vacuum money from the public and advertisers by rebroadcasting American programming. Whenever they were forced to produce Canadian content, they’ll make American-like shows or buy into the old branch plant indus-

trial strategy of the sixties and seventies and give you Canadian versions of American shows – Canadian Idol, anyone? Or how about Amazing Race Canada? Oh, Tom don’t leave us now. We need you more than ever.

harlie Ross returns to the Tidemark Theatre on March 15 with a new show and a new purpose. Ross is donating his entire show in an effort to help fundraise for the Tidemark’s 25 Capital Campaign. He blew Campbell River away with his One-Man Star Wars Trilogy last February and now he is back to take us on another epic journey with him, this time to Middle-Earth. One-Man Lord of the Rings is Charlie Ross’ hilarious and entertaining take on one of

his favorite childhood trilogies. His love of the story is clearly depicted in his ability to recreate each unique character and key scenes from three movies all in just 60 minutes on an empty stage and dressed simply in black. With his subtle movements and vocal tones, he brings you right into MiddleEarth with him, the hobbits, and Gandolf. Help support the Tidemark 25 Capital Campaign move onto Phase II, which will include upgrades with a state-of-the-art

computerized stage lighting, an online ticketing system, in-house projection system and monitors, and the replacement of the theatre seats, which were originally installed in 1947. The modernization of the theatre will allow for more opportunity to include local community organizations and non-profits. Tickets for One-Man Lord of the Rings are $25 for adults and $15 for students and are available online at www.tidemarktheatre. com or at the ticket center Tuesday to Saturday from 12-4 p.m.

The Canadian Dental Association recommends the first visit to a dentist before your child’s first birthday. The general rule is six months after the eruption of the first tooth. The reasoning is to catch any issues in their earliest stages. Yes you can! There are several species of roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms that can transmit from dogs and cats to people. Most of these worms cause very minor or no signs of illness at all in dogs and cats. Sometimes when these worms get into humans they can get confused and migrate into various organs including the eyes and liver, causing Dr. Peter Woodward serious illness. The worms all tend to pass from the pet’s fasces to people. The worm eggs in the faeces are usually very small and can’t be seen without a microscope. There are several things you can do to minimize your risk of getting worms from pets. Always make sure to wash your hands with soap and water after working outdoors, handling your pet or their faeces, and before meals. Try to train your pet to defecate in only one area and promptly remove the faeces. Cover sand-boxes when not in use, and wear gloves while gardening. In addition to these simple precautions you should perform regular fecal tests and deworming on your dogs and cats. Talk to your vet about a parasite control plan for your pet based on their risk.

Andy died peacefully March 6th, 2013, at Victoria General Neuroscience Center. He is survived by his mother, Sylvia, father Jon, brother, Eric, (Heidi), and their four children, Haley, Hunter, Emily and Ella. He was a young man with a gentle, loving heart and a strong spirit. He was courageous in facing his lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s challenges. He will be missed by his family and those who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held at Bethany Lutheran Church on Saturday, March 23rd at 1:30pm.

Dolores Catherine Stoudt Born Jan.14/1922, passed away peacefully in Campbell River March 6, 2013 at the age of 91. Predeceased by husband Bill (2002), sons Kevin (2010), and Terry (1968), 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Survived by son, Murray (Frances), 3 grandchildren, Ryan (Dominique), Kyle, and Breanne (Mike), great grandchildren Teegan and Kingston. Brothers Benjamin Strueby (Henrietta), Eugene Strueby (Midge), and sister Isabell Braun (Art), and many nieces and nephews. Dolores was the 3rd of 10 children born to Frank and Pauline (Bauml) Strueby who farmed in Moseley, Saskatchewan, near Humboldt. Dolores worked hard on the farm where she learned to play the guitar from her father and caught the eye of Bill Stoudt whom she married on Nov 10 1947. She had many fond memories of playing in a band at weddings, dances, parties etc., and enjoyed playing music throughout her stops in Ocean Falls and Prince George before settling in Campbell River in 1968. Sports also played a big part in her life, playing hockey and ball when younger, then turning to badminton, curling and ďŹ nally golf, where she and her sister Isabell competed endlessly for supremacy. Dolores was a 50 year member of the C.W.L. and, along with Bill, were there when the Knights of Columbus started the Christmas Hamper Fund and worked tirelessly preparing hampers for many years each Christmas. Dolores loved her grandchildren and has passed on a little piece of her to each of them. She had a great sense of humour right to the end, was rarely serious and spoke exactly as she thought. Dolores had few needs and wants, was happy with whatever she had and â&#x20AC;&#x153;always made the best of it.â&#x20AC;? Heartfelt thanks to the staff of Yucalta Lodge-Homestead South that made her 10 years there most enjoyable. Funeral service March 15th at 11:00am at St. Patrickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church with reception and interment to follow. Sports can be a test of strength and stamina, but sport can also be a test of heart and the Home Hardware Tidal Wave faced all three last Sunday as they campaigned for their final opportunity to again represent Vancouver Island at the Provincial Championships. Coach Mick Pomeroy’s side arrived at Tyndall Park in Saanich well prepared to compete against their Island rivals. Playing on an unfamiliar turf field, the Tidal Wave quickly adjusted to the fast playing turf field. From the opening whistle the Campbell River girls overwhelmed the Fusion with a fast and aggressive style and the pin point passing of forwards Kristine Osachuk and Eilidh Rasmussen had the Saanich girls chasing the ball in their own half. Despite the strong play and ball control of the Tidal Wave side, offensive opportunities were slight for both teams. The few times the Fusion did move the ball into a scoring position keeper Olivia Currie easily handled the threat. A short bench and players competing with injuries began to take a toll on the Campbell River side

as the first half wore on. Defender Allana Smith was the first to feel the effects of the hard turf surface, suffering a back injury near the middle point of the half, landing on the carpet after making a strong tackle to eliminate a Fusion offensive opportunity. Only a short five minutes later defender Taylor Marsh reinjured her knee after delivering a crunching tackle. With Smith and Marsh having to leave the pitch, defenders Jocelyn Cormier and Emma Peachy took their game to another level and refused to allow the Fusion to carry the ball much over the centre line. Marsh’s injury was a difficult one and she was unable to return. The first half closed with a nil-nil score but late in the second half Tidal wave veterans Hayley Craddock and Talise Lindenbach combined to send striker Claire Pomeroy into a scoring position with the ball and as she has consistently done for many years, she did not miss, putting the Tidal wave in a 1-nil position with a well placed shot into the high left corner of the fusion goal. On Sunday, Strathcona Triathlon Club will host a running clinic with guest presenter Matt Sharpe. At only 21, Sharpe has a long list of athletic accomplishments, including two-time National Junior Series Champion, won the 2010 Canadian Junior Championships and was ninth at the 2010 World Junior Championships. Shar pe, who is originally from Campbell River, has set his sights on competing for Canada in the 2016 Olympic Games. Like many triathletes, Sharpe’s start in the sport began in the pool as a competitive swimmer in Campbell River. Sharpe was introduced to his first triathlon when he was nine years old in Comox. He immediately fell in love with the sport and has been

Lots of finning and fun at salmon foundation dinner Approximately 400 fishy supporters packed the Community Hall on Saturday night for the 6th annual Campbell River Salmon Foundation Dinner and Dance. The foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mandate is to promote the conservation, rehabilitation and enhancement for Pacific salmon in the greater Campbell River area. Each year the foundation raises approximately $100,000 at the event which

supports a variety of salmon enhancement projects in the area as well as the Pinks for the Pier program. The auction featured a ton of cool stuff including First Nations art, helicopter rides, ski packages and fishing trips. The evening also served to provide a fond goodbye to Mike Gage who is stepping down as the foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s chair. Gage co-founded the foundation in 2007 with Kris Mailman.
