‘Grove Boys Win Cup in Shootout

SkyTrain to Langley tops transit options By JEFF NAGEL Aldergrove Star

Suspect arrested in 2012 home invasion Aldergrove Star

A 24-year-old Aldergrove man is in custody, accused of a home invasion in West Vancouver last fall. On Oct. 28, 2012, West Vancouver Police were called to a home in the 2200block of Haywood Avenue. A man inside the home told police he had been confronted by two suspects brandishing a gun. The victim’s hands were bound with plastic tie straps and several items had

been stolen from the home, said police. At the time of the alleged home invasion, police had already received and were responding to complaints about two suspicious men claiming to be distributing pamphlets in the same block. Investigators subsequently determined the attack was not random. After an extensive investigation using a variety of techniques one suspect was identified and an arrest warrant was issued in early February.

Richard Wayne Heino was arrested by Abbotsford Police March 1, on the outstanding warrant. Crown Counsel has approved charges of unlawful confinement and use of an imitation firearm in the commission of an offence. Investigation to identify and arrest a second alleged suspect is ongoing, said West Van Police. Heino remains behind bars at the present time.

New rapid transit studies released by TransLink have handed more ammunition to backers of SkyTrain technology through Surrey to Langley as well as on Vancouver’s Broadway corridor toward UBC. A SkyTrain line running above Fraser Highway from Surrey City Centre to Langley, coupled with Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines running south to White Rock on King George Boulevard and east to Guildford on 104 Avenue is the most expensive of four shortlisted options at $2.22 billion, but TransLink found it delivers the most transportation benefits and by far the highest ridership. It would also be the fastest, carrying passengers from Langley to Surrey Central station in just 22 minutes, compared to 29 or 30 minutes for the other three options. Surrey council has lobbied for a network of ground-level light rail (LRT) lines, rather than BRT or elevated SkyTrain, arguing LRT would be a better fit for the city’s neighbourhoods. TransLink previously studied a dozen different technology permutations in Surrey before winnowing them to the four front runners. The option closest to the city’s preference would run light rail trains on all three corridors radiating from downtown Surrey, with BRT rapid buses running on the southern section of King George from Newton to White Rock as light rail isn’t considered justifiable there. At $2.18 billion, that would be only slightly cheaper than the SkyTrain/BRT option, but is estimated to attract only half the new transit riders as SkyTrain because light rail trains run more slowly and less reliably at street level with traffic. The main downside of SkyTrain is the elevated guideway down Fraser Highway would be an eyesore, while BRT and LRT offer more scope to improve urban design. Surrey transit advocate Paul Hillsdon, who previously backed light rail, now prefers the SkyTrain option (with BRT running to Guildford, Newton and White Rock), adding it clearly outperforms LRT at virtually the same cost. “Based on the cost, there seems to be very little benefit to pursuing the light rail system as the city has advocated,” Hillsdon said. He added TransLink may have inflated the light rail costs somewhat compared to systems built elsewhere, but he accepts the findings. “There are huge travel time savings with SkyTrain and double the ridership, for basically the exact same price.” But he said SkyTrain on Fraser Highway would depend on neighbourhood acceptance of denser development – SkyTrain could bring high-rise towers, not just mid-rises, to Fleetwood and Clayton. FROM FRONT:

Despite the city’s goal of densifying King George, Hillsdon noted that hasn’t happened, while growth has concentrated in areas like Clayton and Grandview instead. BRT, which delivers the southern leg to South Surrey/White Rock in all options, does not simply mean adding more buses. A BRT line would run high-capacity articulated buses in their own dedicated lanes, with traffic priority – functioning much like a light rail system on rubber wheels instead of tracks. Surrey Coun. Barinder Rasode said council definitely wants light rail, not just express-bus BRT, on King George to densify that corridor, in line with city plans. “We’ve been very clear that our option would be LRT, not just because of the cost but because it is less intrusive to the community,” Rasode said. Light rail passengers riding at street level would be more likely to stop and shop at Surrey businesses, she said, than an overhead Skytrain whisking residents to other cities. “It’s about economic investment in our own city,” Rasode said. “We don’t want mass rapid transit running right out of the city every time. We don’t want people to just be transported straight out to Langley.” The $2.18-billion LRT scenario would still require passengers arriving from South Surrey and White Rock on BRT buses to transfer to trains in Newton. A cheaper option, at $1.68 billion, would run light rail on Fraser Highway to Langley and BRT on the King George and 104 corridors. The cheapest scenario still on the table is running BRT on all three corridors at a cost of $900 million. Also released was a study of options for rapid transit on Vancouver’s heavily congested Broadway corridor to UBC. Again, the most expensive option – a $3-billion underground SkyTrain line down Broadway – also ranks as having the highest benefit, most ridership and best speed and reliability. At-grade LRT could be built to UBC for $1.1 billion, while tunnelled LRT or a combo LRT/subway scenario could run Paul Hillsdon $1.4 to $2.7 billion. TransLink plans to lead regional discussions with the public, elected officials and other stakeholders to examine the trade-offs of the options and decide on preferred options for the Surrey and Vancouver expansions. “We’re not picking one over the other,” said Bob Paddon, TransLink’s executive vice-president of strategic planning and public affairs. “We’re nowhere near identifying a preference.” Paddon said the short-listed options perform differently depending on what criteria is considered and the goals of the local communities, adding more detail on TransLink’s findings will be released in the weeks ahead. Nor is it clear yet how either new transit line will be financed. Area mayors are pressing the province for new funding sources for TransLink, but Paddon noted there would also have to be large capital contributions to the new lines from the federal and provincial governments. “You can’t do rapid transit without senior government involvement.” No decision has been made on whether a Surrey or Vancouver rapid transit expansion should be built first.

Mayor Jack Froese didn’t see a need to make any amendments to the bylaw. “I’d be accepting this bylaw as it stands right now.” A report on the proposed fee by Robert Cesaretti, manager of permit licence and inspection services, estimates the number of illegal suites has almost doubled in six years. Richter expressed concern the fee — expected to range between $350 and $580, depending on sewer and water hookups — could be a disadvantage to many in the community, including lower income families, those living on rural properties who don’t have access to water, sewer or garbage pickup, as well as residents who have their elderly parents residing with them. “I think there is some consid-

Seismic 2000 Construction Ltd. of Aldergrove has won this year’s Deputy Minister’s Contractor of the Year Award in the bridges and structures category for its work on the Highway 3 Old Kootenay River Channel Bridge. The project involved rehabilitating the existing 300-metre-long bridge, which was built in 1958. The company provided excellent traffic management to keep Highway 3 open, and dealt with a number of challenges as a result of summer electrical storms and power failures. It also worked to mitigate any potential environmental disruptions and impacts, as the bridge lies within the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area. “It’s an excellent feather in our cap,” said Kazakoff. “We had a crew of 35 workers for six months working in the oldest wildlife refuge in B.C. We had herds of elk, swallows, and 80 per cent of the work was underneath in the wetlands. We had to do our due diligence.” Kazakoff founded the company 15 years ago when he was laid off by another road builder at age 50. “I figured I might as well because who

VICTORIA – The B.C. legislature session ends this week. It can’t come quickly enough for Premier Christy Clark and the B.C. Liberals. This is also the week we see the rest of the fallout from “ethnic-gate,” as the latest controversy over partisan activity by political staff has been clumsily labelled. A disgruntled former B.C. Liberal caucus staffer handed the NDP opposition an internal memo setting out a strategy for ethnic “outreach” that strayed into forbidden territory, suggesting that ethnicfriendly government events could be staged and participants’ names collected and turned over to the party. “This secret plan clearly demonstrates the Liberals are deliberately folding government resources and staff into their party’s campaign machinery, despite rules that forbid this,” thundered NDP house leader John Horgan. “We’ve seen this before, with the Liberals’ efforts to run a secret committee to subvert the public process around Burnaby Hospital, and in the attack website created by caucus staff and launched by the Liberal party.” Casual observers might see this as a disturbing new development in misuse of public resources. It’s disturbing, all right, but it’s hardly new. The “attack website” Horgan refers to is a case in point. While a website targeting NDP leader Adrian Dix

Ethnic strategy is nothing new

was being cooked up in the B.C. Liberal bunker, a similar effort was being developed in NDP research down the hall. This partisan message detailed all the worthwhile things that could be done with the government’s $15 million advertising budget singing the praises of the government’s “jobs plan.” But this one carried the logo of the NDP caucus, so it was within the rules. The average person, seeing two groups of staff on the public payroll, each slagging the other, might not detect much of a difference. The biggest headline from the leaked memo was its reference to generating “quick wins” for the election campaign by staging apologies for historic racial injustices. It mentioned how former premier Gordon Campbell delivered a solemn apology in 2008 for the decision to turn away a ship carrying Sikh refugees from Vancouver harbour – shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. What does a modern provincial premier accomplish by apologizing for a federal immigration decision made in 1915? Why would another premier now feel the need to apologize for a federal “head tax” imposed on Chinese immigrants from 1885 to 1923? The answer is obvious. Again, don’t expect much to change with an NDP gov-

ernment. Asked last week if he would stage an apology for the head tax, Dix delivered a wellrehearsed history lesson that made it clear he is anxious to do so. Welcome to politics in an urbanized, globalized media culture. It’s more important to put on a show than to do the right thing. Hospitals are announced three times before they’re built, then announced again when they are staffed. Politics is a lucrative career. Former B.C. Liberal MLA Lorne Mayencourt is one of the additional “outreach” staff hand-picked by Clark. The B.C. Liberals retort that the NDP caucus has a similar staffer named Gabriel Yiu, who has taken three leaves of absence to run for MLA, and is in practical terms a professional NDP candidate. Yiu is running for a fourth time in Vancouver-Fraserview, having been defeated in 2009 by former West Vancouver police chief Kash Heed. That campaign was notorious for anonymous Chineselanguage pamphlets claiming the NDP favours legalizing drugs and imposing a “death tax” on inheritance. This latest scandal might produce meaningful reform. But the misuse of public money to further the interests of political parties is deeply entrenched. Editor: I don’t get it. I don’t understand the shift that has occurred in people’s mind that they now think going outside in their pajamas is perfectly acceptable behaviour. Today alone I counted 11 pajama wearing people. I totally understand the need to feel comfortable. The trend towards casual comfort is evident everywhere, wedding attire has changed, New Years Eve parties are casual, fewer ladies in high heel shoes and dresses, yoga pants are the rage etc., but seriously you pajama wearing people are pushing it. The majority of “offenders” seem to be teenage girls, but I have seen boys as well and many adults. My daughter was ticked off that for girls basketball tryouts a peer showed up in her pajamas and fuzzy boots. The girl made the team because there ended up being no cuts. I highly doubt this girl is serious about the game. I have spoken to a couple teenage boys who find it a turn-off when girls in their class show up in pajamas. They commented that they think the girls have not showered and find it gross and slobby that they are wearing what they just slept in. Don’t even get me started on the pajama wearing moms walking their pajama wearing kids to school. They are everywhere… at the grocery store, at restaurants, what is next, wearing them to job interviews? I’m sure it has been done. I just can’t help but think parents are a bit to blame. Isn’t it our job as parents to teach our kids what appropriate attire is for different situations? I guess I was just raised by a mom who cared about those sorts of things. She would make us clean our shoes and wouldn’t allow us to wear clothes with stains and food spills, hair was brushed etc… in other words we looked presentable and with that came confidence and a sense of pride. Please understand your appearance affects how people will treat you. The wise old expression, “You never get another chance to make a first impression,” is so true. Please leave your pajamas at home where they belong. S. McDonald, Aldergrove

Valley needs transit now Editor: I read and winced at the advertorial disguised as an editorial in the March 6th Vancouver Sun, authored by Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and UBC President Stephen Toope. They claim if a subway style transit system is not built on the Broadway corridor out to UBC, it will be the end of the downtown economic engine as we currently know it. Not even discussed is the issue of whether it will be the sole sourced, cost bloated product from Bombardier as a continuation of the Skytrain system from VCCClark westward or a much more cost effective LRT system built at grade. It matters not how it is built - carrying mainly students with fares heavily discounted means it will be an even larger river of red ink than usual, subsidized by an ever increasing Rube Goldberg patchwork array of taxes and fees. We exhausted taxpayers, south of the Fraser, are becoming increasingly tired of continually shoveling our cash north of the Fraser to pay for transit system technology we will never use and does not represent best bang for the long term buck. SkyTrain is from a sole-source supplier, Bombardier, versus a worldwide supply chain dying to compete with an alternate LRT solution. In addition the LRT solution is substantially less money and seismic survivable-unlike SkyTrain. South of the Fraser is currently one million people with another 500,000 arriving over the next 20 years - Surrey will be larger than Vancouver. It takes me longer to go from east Langley to downtown Vancouver (62Km and 110 min) on TransLink than it takes to go from Ottawa to Montreal (180Km and 100 Min). It is imperative that Abbotsford be considered as part of this plan as it is the second fastest growing city in BC. What sin have we committed in our past lives that our LRT needs are continually shelved in favour of our brethren north of the Fraser? I cannot understand that with almost every MLA along a prospective LRT route being not only a Liberal MLA but a member of Cabinet over the past decade, why we were not recipients of this critical infrastructure? Please stand up to TransLink and whatever government we inherit on May 14 and demand the next rapid transit expansion is in the Surrey/Langley area. Lee Lockwood, Aldergrove

public notices Be Wild Animal Aware The Township of Langley is full of wildlife habitat, and residents share the area with animals including bears, cougars, and coyotes. While residents throughout Langley do not need to be continually on alert, there are a number of actions that can be taken to deter wild animals if they are spotted in your area. Parents are encouraged to educate their children on what to do if they encounter any of these animals, especially if they play by themselves in areas that wildlife frequent or have been seen in the past. To help people coexist with creatures that are simply trying to survive but can be dangerous if provoked, the following information is offered:

Bears: are coming out of three or four months of hibernation this time of year. They are extremely hungry, have lost weight, and are looking for a lot of food. They also have cubs, which the mothers will teach how to hunt and look for food. Baby bears learn from their mothers’ behavior and they are smart animals: don’t let them learn that food can easily be obtained from humans. If you encounter a bear, do not run. Act big and loud, and back away slowly to a safe place.

Cougars: can have kittens throughout the year, and family groups can

be seen at any time. Cougars and bobcats have been seen in Langley over the past couple of months. They survive on natural food sources found in the wild, primarily deer.

Cougar attacks on humans are highly unlikely. However, if you encounter a cougar, do not run. Pick children up immediately and talk to the cougar in a confident voice. Act big by waving sticks and branches, and back away slowly while still facing the cougar. If it attacks, fight back.

Coyotes: have the largest population of potentially dangerous wildlife in Langley and can be seen year round, even in residential areas. Pups are born in the spring and are trained to hunt and kill. Coyotes are bold and easily lose their natural fear of people. Never feed a coyote. If you encounter a coyote, scare it off by making loud noise or throwing something at it to make it afraid. Never ignore a coyote. If it continues to approach, do not run. Maintain eye contact, pick up small pets or children, and slowly move to an area of increased activity.

In Residential Areas: Reduce the smell of food by keeping barbecues clean. Keep pet food inside. WARNING Garbage is the biggest attraction Langley has a large for bears so keep it secure and inaccessible to wildlife. Do not deer population leave garbage cans out overnight: USE CAUTION keep them in the house, a locked ON ROADS garage, or secured outbuilding that cannot be broken into by large, smart bears. Put them out only on the morning of collection. If you are worried about odour, keep garbage in the freezer until collection day. Do not use bird feeders, as they attract bears and the birds do need seeds when other natural food sources are available. Be vigilant with small animals, especially cats, in areas where coyotes are around.

In Agricultural Areas: Protect your investment by keeping fences secure and free of damage that predators can use for access. Coyotes burrow, so ensure surrounding netting goes deep into the ground. Use electric fencing to deter bears from blueberries and beehives, and pick berries and fruit as they ripen. Be vigilant with livestock and keep them secure. Farm animals are usually killed at night, so bring them inside in the evening. It is an offence to attract wildlife into a residential neighbourhood. Those who do not take steps to deter bears and other wild creatures can face a fine of up to $575. To report poachers or polluters or if you have a problem with wildlife call: Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) 1.877.952.7277

Aquasonics to National Qualifier Championships Aldergrove Star

The BC Aquasonics National Stream Synchronized Swimming teams head to Calgary to compete at Synchro Canada’s National Qualifier Championships held at the Talisman Centre, March 20-24. This is the first year that Synchro Canada has held a National Qualifier event, replacing the former Eastern and Western Qualifier round. Over 700 athletes from across Canada will be competing, including several from the local area. “Our athletes have been training extremely hard since August preparing for this competition,” says BC Aquasonics head coach Susan Kemper, ChPC. “In this sport we train 15 to 25 hours a week at the high performance level. These ath-

letes need incredible mental focus to bring that training into competition just a few times a year. The girls are ready and, after their results at the BC Provincials, we have high expectations for this competition.” The BC Aquasonics are coached by the top high performance synchronized swimming coaches in British Columbia. Susan Kemper, ChPC is BC Aquasonics Head Coach, Senior National Stream Team Coach and Technical Director for Synchro BC. She is a former Team Canada Head Coach and athlete. Director Brittany Bergevin Heads to Regina

“I hope I can make you all proud ” It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you that I have sat at my last board meeting for the Otter Co-op this past week. However, the news is not all bad. I am currently preparing to depart to “The Pile of Bones” otherwise known as the city of Regina. I will be attending the RCMP training academy Depot, in hopes of graduating to become a police officer. It is going to be a difficult six months away from home, and it could potentially be longer, but I will perservere. I have enjoyed my time on the board as both a Junior Director and as an Elected Director. I hope that as the Junior Director I did that position justice, and I thank the board and the membership for giving me the chance to prove myself as an elected official. I know that I have gained much knowledge that I would not have been able to receive elsewhere. I have made countless friends in the

staff, board members, management, and others around the Cooperative system that I hope to maintain for a lifetime. Most importantly however, I have gained an appreciation for the Cooperative system as a way of doing business and life. One thing that I ask is that you continue to put faith in young people. Without being given that first chance, I know I would not be where I am today and I am grateful for that. The experience of being a director has given my life a quality that not many young people can attest to and I say thank you for that opportunity. I appreciate all that you have given me over the years and I hope that I will make you all proud. If I do end up somewhere other than the lower mainland, I hope that that town has a Co-op so that I can share my appreciation for the Co-operative values elsewhere.

Armstrong Feed Mill

A Great Addition to Otter Co-op Otter Co-op is pleased to announce that the purchase of Interior Dairysource Feed Mill is complete! As of March 7, 2013, Otter Co-op purchased the assets of Interior Dairysource in Armstrong, BC; and began operating as Otter at Armstrong on March 8th. This feed mill operation fits in well with Otter Co-op’s feed division, as feed is a major component of our business, selling in excess of $33 million dollars this past fiscal year. The mill at Armstrong in its current configuration has the capacity to produce approx 25,000 tonnes of feed per year. To put it into comparison, our feed mill operation in Aldergrove produces approx 65,000 tonnes of feed per year. Otter Feed Division currently sells to farm accounts and consumers in the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland. And Otter also has a significant feed business with dealers and resellers all over BC, as well as to some dealers into Alberta. The purchase of the Armstrong facility will help increase capacity, as well as improve delivery efficiencies and offer us the opportunity to purchase ingredients more competitively with the increase in volume and access to rail. This is a great addition to Otter Co-op, and will reap benefits to the Co-op and our members for years to come!

If Yes, Otter Co-op Board of Directors is looking for you! Sense of Community, Business Acumen in helping direct a $170 million operation. If you are interested in running for the Otter Co-op Board of Directors you must have your Director Qualification Declaration signed by Wednesday, May 15, 5:00 pm to be eligible to run for a position at the May 29, 2013 Annual Meeting. Applications are available at the Administration Office. If you have any questions please call Merilee @ the Administration Office 604 607 6923.

President’s Message:

Spring is fast approaching! One only needs to see the wonderful display of garden seeds, seed potatoes, patio furniture and barbeques to get the feeling. This also means that summer will come quickly. As our General Manager alludes to in his Dorothy Anderson message, Otter Co-op has had another Board President great year, and we just keep growing and growing. March 2, 2013, marked our year-end with sales of just over $167 Million. As our Co-op is a member/owner of Federated Co-operatives Ltd., we are now in the #8 position of the 234 Co-ops, mostly in Western Canada, under the Cooperative Retailing System umbrella. We are very fortunate that Otter Co-op is very diversified as we have many different business units, such as Food, Hardware, Family Fashions, Pharmacy, Feed, and Petroleum, which includes our 5 Gas Bars and Bulk Petroleum. As well, our management team is always on the lookout for new opportunities that might work within our Co-op System. You, our members, can let us know if you think of anything we are missing. That is how our Pharmacy within the Retail Centre came into being. Just recently, five of our Directors had the opportunity to attend the Federated Co-operatives Limited (FCL) Annual General Meeting held in Saskatoon. Senior Leadership Team Vice-Presidents updated us on the various departments that made up their $8.8 billion of sales in their last fiscal year. Of this amount, $527 million will be allocated to the 234 member Co-ops as patronage refunds on their 2012 purchases from FCL. This then makes up a portion of the Patronage Dividends that we pay out to you, our members, every September. As is always the case, FCL keeps the whole Co-op Retailing System updated and in turn emphasizing our “YOU’RE AT HOME HERE” tagline. Training of our staff (and Directors) is constantly happening at Otter Co-op. This is where our Co-op brand characteristics come in: FRIENDLY, TRUSTING, CARING, HONEST, PROUD, SUCCESSFUL, AUTHENTIC, and KNOWLEDGEABLE … coming straight from the book and we mean it. Enjoy the coming months and remember “YOU’RE AT HOME HERE”. We are the hosts, you are the guests. We look forward to seeing you at the Co-op.

Congratulations to all our Winners!

March 2, 2013 marked the end of our fiscal year here at Otter Co-op, and what a grand way to end our 90th Year Anniversary! With strong community support from our members and shoppers, Otter achieved a new record for sales this past year, ending at $167,116,529; Jack Nicholson which is a 7.9% increase over the previous General Manager record set last year of $154,919,309. Fantastic results made possible by our dedicated team of directors and staff at Otter, as well as you, our loyal shoppers. I am very proud of our team and these results, especially given the past year of increased local competition, and competing with additional cross border shopping challenges. March 2013 also marks the expansion of Otter Co-op’s successful Feed Division, as we complete the purchase of a feed mill operation in Armstrong, British Columbia. As of March 7th, the Interior Dairysource Feed Mill is now part of the Otter Co-op Feed operation, and fits in well with our position as a provincial feed company. Otter Co-op currently enjoys sales of our products to well in excess of 150 feed dealers throughout British Columbia, and there were many synergies between our two mills that made this a great marketing, sales and bottom line addition to our company. We are excited that this operation will bring bottom line savings to the feed operation immediately, as well as operational savings through improved purchasing opportunities on commodities that we currently use in our Aldergrove operation. Other expansion projects currently in the works include our planned gas bar and convenience store on Highway 11 between Abbotsford and Mission; and a new cardlock, bulk plant, gas bar and convenience store in Chilliwack on Lickman Road. We continue to work through the Department of Fisheries and Oceans for our project on Highway 11, and are planning to break ground on our Chilliwack site later this year. These projects both fit in well with our plan for continued growth and success of our organization, adding additional sales and profits into the Coop. Your board and management and staff continue on a track record of fiscal responsibility balanced with sound marketing objectives, to ensure that we have continuous development and growth of our employees and the Co-op. I love that someone said Otter Co-op is rooted in history, is relevant and revered today, and positioned for tomorrow. It’s great to see what we’ve achieved this past year, and we are excited and looking forward to another record breaking year in the twelve months ahead of us. Our Annual Meeting is set for May 29th, be sure and mark your calendar to come out and hear the results achieved in each division this past year, as well as the exciting plans for the future. See you at the Co-op!

Saskatoon Saskatchewan March 1-4/2013 Susan Dodd Otter Co-Op Director

As a new director I was able to attend this meeting as a delegate for Otter Co-op. I learnt that no matter the size of the Co-op, challenges of the future will affect us all. Technology is an area that is growing at lightning speed, and Federated Co-op is making great strides to insure that every Co-op will embrace these changes. It was amazing to meet other delegates from all over western Canada who had similar concerns to us here at Otter. The big box stores are everywhere and we need to evolve, but not forget our roots. The co-op brand and the re-branding of some of our products, with commitment to quality, will create value for our members and community. On Sunday evening we had the opportunity to hear keynote speaker Mark Tewksbury (former Canadian

Olympic swimmer) talk about how business is similar to sports. He spoke about envisioning success, working towards that goal and having the commitment to become a winner, no matter where you are on the team. The bar is constantly being raised and by using the power of example we can inspire excellence in others. Taking control of our destiny by investing in our future with marketing strategies and training of the next generation, Co-op's can continue on the path of growth, and retain the values that are important to us all. “At Co-op you're at home here” Respectfully submitted, Susan Dodd OTTER CO-OP DIRECTOR

Putting art on ‘the map’ Aldergrove Star

Organizers are seeking artists to join the fifth annual Langley Art Studio Tour. During the last two weekends in September, visitors will follow a printed guide map to art studios and other related stops of interest all over the community. It’s a great way to showcase local art, be it paintings, pottery, sculpture, jewellery, glass, fabric or other media — as long is it’s your own original work. The event is well advertised and visitors come from far and wide. If you don’t have a studio, apply anyway. Many artists are willing to share their studio space, plus there are several “stops of interest” where artists can display their work. Applications from artists who live outside Langley are encouraged and will be accepted as space permits. Fee is $100 per studio (solo artist) or $50 per artist (sharing). Apply by June 15. Gonzales makes it 3-1 for Kodiaks in semis By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star

The Aldergrove Kodiaks’ mighty defenceman Stefan Gonzales has been an outstanding asset for the junior hockey team all season but he’s also contributing more than his share to the playoffs run. On Sunday night (March 10) Gonzales netted the game four winning goal over the Abbotsford Pilots in double-overtime to put the Kodiaks up 3-1 in the semifinals. Assisted by Ryan Veillet and Kenny Prato, Gonzales fired the puck low and it zipped past keeper Aaron Oakley to end the game 4-3 at 3:33 in the second overtime. It followed Friday’s doubleovertime win in which Kodiak Brandon Dolby scored the winner at 7:58 in the second overtime, to end the game at 5-4. The Pilots had opened the series

Aldergrove Bruins are hosting teams from around the world at the International Friendship Hockey Tournament, March 14-24 at Aldergrove Arena.

Aldergrove just became a whole lot ‘Friendlier!’ Aldergrove Star

Today, Aldergrove welcomes 10 teams from around the world. The 2013 Peewee International Friendship Ice Hockey Tournament is officially here. After 16 months of preparation and planning, teams from Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Australia, USA and Canada have arrived. The International tournament will run until the 24th of March and will feature teams made up of boys and girls aged 12-14 years old. The tournament’s history is a long one with it getting a piece of its start right here in Aldergrove. In 1986 Aldergrove Minor Hockey hosted an Atom B Invitational Tournament. One of the teams that participated was the Hachinohe White Bear from Hachinohe, Japan. Mr. Tadakiyko

Kaneiri was there. In 1989 the citizens of the Japanese city of Hachinohe on the island of Honshu, celebrated their city’s 60th Anniversary. A local business leader by the name of Mr. Tadakiyko Kaneiri and his brother Kiyotaka had a dream to mark the occasion by hosting an International Peewee Ice Hockey Tournament for 12 and 13 year old children. They believed that bringing youth together from all over the world in an atmosphere where the emphasis was placed on fair play, sportsmanship, mutual respect and cultural exchange would develop greater tolerance and understanding and forge lifelong friendships. Their dream became a reality when the first Friendship Hockey Tournament was hosted in 1989 in Hachinohe. All of the players par-

ticipating in the tournament were assigned home stay or host families for the duration of their stay in Japan. The tradition of the host families has continued in each tournament. The Friendship Tournament is not a business or profit driven event but rather a vehicle for young ice hockey players, both boys and girls, from different countries to play against each other in the spirit of friendship and fair play while experiencing the culture of the host country. Mutual respect and understanding are two of the principal aspects of this tournament that participants learn which in turn serves them well for the rest of their lives, both on and off the ice. At the conclusion of the first tournament, St. Paul, Minnesota offered to host the second tourna-

ment in 1991 and thus the biennial Friendship Tournament was born. When the next venue is decided upon, the tournament flag (which will be hanging proudly in the Aldergrove Arena starting this Saturday) is passed to the next host country. Since the tournament’s inception it has be held in Cranbrook, BC - Christchurch, New Zealand - Aldergrove, B.C. – Canberra, Australia – Tomakomai, Japan – Hachinohe, Japan - Johnson/Como USA and most recently in Hudson, Wisconsin, USA. Aldergrove has attended every tournament and represented Canada with great pride. The tournament prides itself on the fact that there are no losers. All participants “win” by being part of the tournament. Teams participating are not national “rep” teams but

rather teams consisting of players who may not normally be selected to play against international teams or visit and compete in an international event. The players are ones who play ice hockey for the local community or town, not just to win but for the enjoyment of participating and doing what kids do best…have fun and create friendships. Please help us welcome the world over the next 12 days here in Aldergrove. Let’s show our guests good hospitality, good sportsmanship and most of all good Friendship. Opening Ceremonies for the tournament take place at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 16 at the Aldergrove Arena with all games wrapping up on Sunday, March 24. Race the Ridge presented by Local Ride Bike Shop will draw top cyclists from across the province to Maple Ridge’s only stage race on April 27-28. It will feature a brand new course for its individual time trial. Riders will have the opportunity to test themselves on the route on April 6 in Pitt Meadows, before the main event on April 27. “We wanted to give racers a chance to check out the new time trial course in a race situation as a kind of sneak peek for Race the Ridge,” said race organizer Barry Lyster. “The Pitt-Polder time trial will offer unique challenges. There are some sections of very rough pavement and icy, strong headwinds off of Pitt Lake are very likely.” The April 6 time trial

will come the day before another of Lyster’s competitive cycling events, Barry’s Roubaix, a multilap road race using the roads and dykes of Pitt Meadows. More information about the April 6 Pitt-Polder time trial will be announced soon. “Those riders who choose to race the time trial the day before Barry’s Roubaix are truly hardcore,” said Lyster. “It will be a great tune-up for Race the Ridge.” Racers are encouraged to register for Race the Ridge, as a discounted early registration rate is available until February 28. Race and registration information can be found online at www.localride. ca > Our Races > Race the Ridge. For details about Barry’s Roubaix, visit www.localride.ca > Our Races > Barry’s Roubaix.
