The setting was intimate; the conversation unscripted. Rabbi Zalman Schachter Shalomi, the Iranian Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi and the Dalai Lama sat around a fireplace and chatted about conflict resolution, wisdom traditions, and about Sufis who plunge knives into their heads without drawing blood.
Hidden away like a pot of gold, everyone loves to discover their inner Irish on St. Patrick’s Day — or at least that’s the impression you can get when you see the size of the crowd lining Vancouver’s streets for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The parade begins at 11am at Howe and Davie and proceeds north on Howe to Georgia, coming to a rousing end at Granville. But you don’t have to wait until Sunday to turn green with envy of Irish culture. CelticFest continues all this week including a concert with Mary Jane Lamond & Wendy MacIsaac and Maeve MacKinnon at the Vogue on Thursday night; Friday night music at Ceili’s Irish Pub, Doolin’s Irish Pub and Mahony & Sons Public House; dance workshops on Saturday; a kids Celtic corner with Academie Duello’s swordplayers on Saturday; the Mahony & Sons Celtic Village on Granville on both Saturday (11am to 6pm) and Sunday (10am to 5pm), and a Ceilidh at the Vancouver FanClub on Saturday night. Vancouver’s North Shore Mountains formed the backdrop and even though the Dalai Lama paid little attention to the stunning scenery outside the hotel window, Victor Chan took careful note of it. The meeting provided the inspiration for one of the chapters in the newly released The Wisdom of Compassion: Stories of Remarkable Encounters and Timeless Insights (Riverhead, 2013) that bears both the Dalai Lama’s and Chan’s names as co-authors. Chan will present the book on March 19 from 7 to 8:30pm in the Alice MacKay Room of the Central Library (350 W. Georgia). Admission is free but seating is limited. It is not surprising that Chan, who lives at the edge of Gastown, includes Vancouver as one of the settings for the stories included in the book. The founder of the Dalai Lama Center for Peace and Education has known the Dalai Lama since 1972. He also hosted the Tibetan spiritual leader in Vancouver numerous times. One of the book’s chapters revolves around the Dalai Lama’s playful exchange with Archbishop Desmond Tutu at the Chan Centre; another recounts his time on the Orpheum stage; yet another shows the

It’s not only the settings that make The Wisdom of Compassion different from other books with the Dalai Lama’s name on the cover. It is, in general, more ‘show’ and less ‘tell’. In addition to relaying the Dalai Lama’s words, it shows him interact with others, from international icons to a group of sick children, as well as documenting their reactions to him.

Spring Break
A world of ta-da moments After a less than stellar first visit a decade ago, a Vancouver family finds something special at Science World By Sabrina Furminger
U
ntil a couple of weeks ago, I’d only ever stepped into Science World on one occasion. That visit occurred more than a decade ago, when I was brand new to the city and my then-boyfriend was eager to wow me with all of Vancouver’s attractions. Back then, we’d spend our weekends working down his must-see list: Stanley Park, Spanish Banks, Vancouver Aquarium, Granville Island. And this Montreal-born, Toronto-raised 22-year-old was suitably wowed. But when we got to Science World, I was less than impressed. There were kids everywhere — and they were loud. After 20 minutes, we escaped the mayhem and

headed to Mario’s Gelato. Eventually, that boyfriend became my husband, and in 2010, we became parents. And because you can only watch so many episodes of Dora the Explorer before your eyes bleed, we’ve spent every weekend since our daughter was born exploring Vancouver anew. From the Vancouver Art Gallery to Nitobe Memorial Garden, from Bloedel Conservatory to the Vancouver Police Museum, our sightseeing forays are an essential part of our lifestyle. But one place we hadn’t visited, until I was asked to check it out on behalf of WE readers? Science World. So there we were: two wary adults, one excited toddler, emerging from a cruel February rain into the iconic sphere. Just like before, we found ourselves immediately surrounded by children. Maybe it’s because we’re parents now, or because we were greeted at the door by Jacki Mayo, Science World’s personable and knowledgeable early learning program and exhibit developer, but the mayhem didn’t irk us. In fact, we were inspired by the enthusiasm. Mayo led us right to an area called Kidspace. Officially, Kid-
Science Guy Brian Anderson unleashes a fire ball at Science World. Rob Newell photo space is designed for the preschool set, but infants and older children enjoy it, too: building forts out of giant blue foam blocks; climbing the UFO and the jungle gym; playing with boats and movable dams in the water zone; sending balls careening down ramps; getting their faces painted and dressing up in costumes. The bonus with Kidspace, as with much of Science World, is its covert educational opportunities: kids learn scientific concepts via their play, whether they realize it or not. We spent 45 minutes in an exhibit entitled Creativity in Motion: Springs, Sprockets and Pulleys,
which features 25 eye-popping works of art by Steve Gerberich. Using gears and nuts and bolts and thousands of found objects, Gerberich’s imaginative creations are “awakened” through the push of a button or the turn of a crank. Our daughter pushed all the buttons at least twice, her eyes wide with awe as the pieces danced Fantastia-style. We also peeked into the Preschool Curiosity Club (where children ages 3 to 5 embrace their inner Einsteins via instructorled experiments) and joined the school-age audience for the Daily Centre Stage Show, which on that day seemed to involve making as
big a mess as possible, much to the audience’s delight. According to Mayo, it’s not uncommon for families to pass through the doors of Science World and suddenly realize that several hours have flown by. That was certainly our experience. We were feasting on sandwiches and juice in the Triple O’s when I realized we’d been on site for more than two and a half hours. Whatever the science behind this time warp, one thing is clear: the time lost at Science World was re-invested not only in my daughter’s imagination, but in her parents’ as well.

ou don’t have to drag your kids to warmer climes in order to enjoy Spring Break. Adventures can be had right here in the 604, where we’ve got all the makings for a variety of zany staycations. Grab some snacks, a camera, your kids, and our list of 13 can’t-miss outings for Spring Break 2013, and reacquaint yourself with our fine — and, yes, fun! — city.
Y
WHY: In addition to all of the elements that make the VAG a rad destination all year long (heritage building, fantastic café, Emily Carr collection), it’s upped the ante this Spring Break with free hands-on art workshops for children ages 5-12 (daily, noon to 4:00pm). HOURS: Open daily, 10am to 5pm (Tuesdays until 9pm) ADDRESS: 750 Hornby Street RATES & MORE: VanArtGallery.bc.ca
Vancouver Maritime Museum
Bloedel Conservatory
WHY: There’s nothing quite as romantic as the life of a seafarer, and this unique museum celebrates our city’s ties to the high seas. Peruse a treasure trove of artifacts befitting pirates of yore, and step aboard the St. Roch, a 1928 schooner that was the first vessel to circumnavigate North America. Ahoy! HOURS: Tuesday-Saturday: 10am-5pm; Thursday 5pm-8pm; Sunday: noon to 5pm ADDRESS: 1905 Ogden Avenue, Vanier Park RATES & MORE: VancouverMaritimeMuseum. com
WHY: Stepping into the enclosed triodetic dome is very much like visiting the tropics — without the bugs, lost luggage, and malaria shots. The 500 varieties of exotic plants and flowers and 100 free-flying birds are visual vitamin boosts for all winter-weary Vancouverites. HOURS: Open daily, 10am to 5pm ADDRESS: 4600 Cambie, Queen Elizabeth Park RATES & MORE: Vancouver.ca/parks-recreationculture/bloedel-conservatory.aspx
VanDusen Botanical Garden
WHY: Many families are over-scheduled to the point of exhaustion. What better way to relieve the stresses of modern life — and maybe work out some sibling rivalry issues, too — than via a fast-paced family game of five- or 10-pin bowling at this Commercial Drive institution? HOURS: Sunday: 10am-10pm; MondayWednesday: 10am to 11pm, Thursday, 10am to midnight; Friday & Saturday, 10am to 1am ADDRESS: 2195 Commercial Drive RATES & MORE: GrandviewBowling.com
WHY: Located at Oak Street and 37th, VanDusen is a sprawling oasis of trees, flowers, waterfalls, rocks, bridges, and sculptural art. The Cat in the Hat lives Iconic feline makes stage debut on Dr. Seuss’ 109th birthday By Sabrina Furminger
D
r. Seuss’ most famous creation was conceived by way of a game. In 1954, the then 50-year-old American writer (born Theodor Seuss Geisel) was challenged by an educator to write a book that drew its vocabulary from a list of 225 words every Eisenhower-era six-yearold was expected to know. Nine months later, The Cat in the Hat — written using various combinations of 223 of the words from the list, and incorporating 13 more — was finally born. Fast-forward to present-day Vancouver, where the mischievous feline recently made his Canadian stage debut in Carousel Theatre for Young People’s production of The Cat in the Hat, on what would have been the
late Seuss’ 109th birthday (March 2). “Everyone roots for the Cat,” said Vancouver actor and educator Mike Stack, who portrays the titular character in Carousel’s production, which ends its run March 31. The Cat in the Hat — the story of two children whose rainy-day blues are vaporized when a mayhem-prone cat shows up on their doorstep — is the perfect example of the timelessness of Seuss’ work. “It’s a simple, fun story well told.” The bestselling book was adapted by English playwright Katie Mitchell. Mitchell’s play is rigorously faithful to the source material, right down to the Cat’s tenuous balancing act on top of a red and white ball. “Everything you see on stage is pretty well an exact replica of what’s in the book,” said Stack. With a running time of 35 minutes, the play is a realistic length for its youngest audience members, who at three years old might squirm in their seats if asked to sit through anything longer. SPRING BREAK An all-weather oasis for kids of all ages By Sabrina Furminger
6Pack Indoor Beach’s 18,000-sq.ft. facility offers all-weather volleyball and beach access under the Knight St. Bridge. Supplied photo
A
n unexpected stretch of sandy paradise exists on an otherwise gloomy industrial island. Visits to this particular beach will never be ruined by sudden bursts of rain or chilly temperatures. You’ll find no broken beer bottles in the sand, no ants or worms or cigarette butts. If you like, you can play volleyball until 1am (2am on weekends), no matter the season. How can this be? Thanks to the visionary team behind 6Pack Indoor Beach, some of the best parts about going to the beach — namely, the sand and the sports — can be enjoyed all year round in a fully climatecontrolled environment. “The sand is raked every day, and cleaned and tilled once a month,” said Lisa Tam, programs and events director, during a recent visit. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it.” 6Pack Indoor Beach (6PackBeach. com) occupies an 18,000-square foot facility on Mitchell Island, a busy hub for shipping companies and auto-wreckers located under the Knight Street Bridge. With its 700 metric tonnes of sand, 33-foot ceilings, five beach volleyball courts, barbeque grills and bounty of beach
toys, 6Pack Indoor Beach caters to beach lovers of all ages. Since opening in June 2011, 6Pack has hosted some of the best volleyball players in BC — but, given the versatility of the meticulously maintained sand, it also offers beachthemed birthday party packages and encourages parents and kids to drop in for pick-up games and frolicking in the sand. Over Spring Break, 6Pack Indoor Beach is hosting its first-ever multisports camp. “Kids get to try different types of sports and get comfortable with running, jumping, catching, and throwing,” said Tam. Also on the schedule: beach yoga, movie screenings, and sand sculpting.

A harvest of community veggies Chef Andrea Carlson sets up her own version of a CSA
SoundBites By Jenn Chic
W
hile most local-food loving Vancouverites get down to a farmers’ market in the summer months — there are more than 15 going on in the Lower Mainland at the height of the season — winter is another story. The Winter Farmers Market at Nat Bailey Stadium is open every Saturday, no matter the weather, and has everything a locavore would need. But chef Andrea Carlson of Harvest Community Foods (and the soon-toopen Burdock and Co.), has come up with another great way to enjoy the season’s bounty of hardy greens, root crops and apples with a well-curated box of local produce, available for pick-up every two weeks. “We’re so lucky to have such an abundance of year round, local produce at our fingertips here in Vancouver,” says Carlson. “I wanted to create

an opportunity to keep local food as accessible as possible, for those without time or a car and for when the weather makes the trek to the winter farmers’ market daunting.” Carlson used the model of a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) to structure her own custom-designed CSA program at Harvest. A CSA offers consumers the opportunity to buy direct from farmers. Traditionally, a CSA share, or membership, is purchased from the farmer in the early spring. Once summer rolls around “the share,” or box of farm-fresh produce, is picked up weekly and the farmer and consumer get to meet. Having been around for over 25 years, CSAs allow farmers to receive payment early in the season, when they need it most, while the consumer gets to enjoy the freshest food there is, packed full of flavour, nutrients and vibrancy, and know exactly where it comes from. With most CSAs, the food is chosen by the farmer by what is available that particular week. Seasonality never tasted so real — when the winter kale and cabbage make way for springtime asparagus and spinach, until the abundance of summer’s sweetness is exploding in cherries, peas, strawberries, lettuce. At Harvest a CSA box can be ordered up to two days before pick-up day at the Chinatown eatery. Inside is a variety of ingredients that changes each time — veggies, fruits, nuts, legumes — and all are carefully curated by Carlson. It’s perfect for two people. a community of farmers who support the Harvest CSA. Whereas a regular CSA is from only one farm, Carlson calls around to see who has what and what’s the tastiest: Foxglove Farms on Saltspring Island has grains, Klippers Organics in Cawston has apples, North Arm Farms in Pemberton has potatoes and sunchokes, Fresh Roots Urban Farms has greens and Hives For Humanity, a downtown beekeeping project, supply honey. And a wellrounded cornucopia for two is created. Just like having a professional chef in the kitchen, Carlson and her team provide some inspiration, and introduction to the ingredients. “Many people aren’t familiar with many of the veggies we have through the winter, like sunchokes, or kale — and need a little help.” When picking up a Harvest CSA, the staff are sure to explain all the contents and remove any first-time uncertainty — even offering a taste of a Tokyo turnip (which is so delicious and sweet.) Once home, tucked within each bag is a custom-made, easy-to-follow recipe, using the supplied ingredients. To order, sign up for the newsletter on Harvest’s website. Every two weeks, you’ll be reminded of the order deadline and introduced to the week’s producers. And while you’re picking up your veggies, don’t forget dessert — the shelves at Harvest are adequately supplied with Beta 5 chocolate bars and Ernest Ice See page Cream. Yum yum!

Life after Vancouver for Dale Mackay
FreshSheet
Local Food & Drink Happenings
By Cassandra Anderton
V
ancouver’s great outdoor playground, cultural diversity and the food scene are just some of the aspects that draw talent to
the city. One culinary star, chef Dale Mackay, came out from the prairies to Vancouver at an early age to work as a line cook. After heading to London to work with chef Gordon Ramsey, Mackay returned to Vancouver and to the city’s top dining rooms; Lumiere and db Bistro Moderne. He then went on to win season one of Top Chef Canada and shortly thereafter opened his own fine dining establishment, Ensemble, followed by a gastropub, Ensemble Tap. Although both restaurants had rave reviews and despite his talent and Top Chef fame, Mackay closed both spots last fall, citing high rents and the decision to spend more time with family (Mackay has a young son, Ayden). “Vancouver’s costs are high, both personal and business,” Mackay said in a recent interview. “I was working 60 hours a week and was super stressed, which began to strain my creativity.” The chef admits he should have not done so much so soon and is now focused on balancing his work and personal life. Mackay looked towards his home town of Saskatoon over a year ago and will begin construction on a new restaurant and storefront there as soon as he secures the location. Since closing the two restaurants he has been travelling to Saskatoon and Calgary to consult and join chefs in collaborative diners. Mackay was also summoned to the Cayman Islands by chef Eric Ripert to join chefs Anthony Bourdain,
After his Vancouver restaurants closed, Dale Mackay appeared in the Cayman Islands, where he opened up about his new project. Cassandra Anderton photo Spike Mendelsohn and Jose Andres for the Cayman Island Cookout. There he taught a cooking class on the beach, presenting BC sablefish and his famous pulled pork, and then teamed up with a local chef for a dinner heavy on the province’s specialties. Mackay also revealed that his Saskatoon projects will have a bistro feel, with a lounge and approximately 110 seats, hinting the hunt for location must be close to over. “The room will have lots of reclaimed wood and brass and there will be a focus on local produce.” And as opposed to his Vancouver restaurants’ heavy seafood menus, this spot will have less ocean-sourced product and the fish will include Saskatchewan lake-
sourced perch and trout, while the adjacent storefront will sell cheese, charcuterie and prepared items such as smoked brisket, confit duck and pulled pork. Mackay will not be taking this journey on his own, as he is bringing his sous chefs Nathan Guggenheimer (ex-Lumiere) and Jesse Zuber with him as well as his front of house manager Christopher Cho; both from Ensemble. It is unfortunate that Vancouver has priced itself out of some grand culinary talent, but Mackay’s relocation and return home is exciting for Saskatoon’s developing food scene. The city’s chefs are eager to collaborate with him and we are certain to hear more from Saskatchewan after he returns home to contribute to their unique food culture.
Celebration of Tuscan wines At Tuesday’s wine tasting at Terminal City Club, the Italian Chamber of Commerce’s Giacomo Trevisiol welcomed Emily Carr graduate Candace Mate who, with her Vancouver-born husband Ferenc, owns the Brunello di Montalcino winery in Tuscany. Confiscating drivers’ cell phones rejected Talking and texting behind the wheel continues to be a major road safety problem, but Attorney General Shirley Bond has rejected raising fines or taking away mobile phones to deal with the problem. The tough new measures were suggested last week by Victoria Police Chief Jamie Graham, after an enforcement blitz by BC police forces resulted in about 6,000 tickets being issued in February. Graham suggested police should also have the authority to seize a phone for 24 hours for a first offence, and for several days for repeat offences. Bond said taking away cell phones would create privacy problems, and she is also not convinced that increasing fines would have the desired effect.

Dead Man Down offers cheap thrills Dead Man Down
Starring Colin Farrell, Noomi Rapace Directed by Niels Arden Oplev Danish director Niels Arden Oplev, best known for helming the original Girl With The Dragon Tattoo film, once again utilizes the talents of Swedish muse Noomi Rapace in his North American début, the crime drama Dead Man Down. Rapace reprises the role of the victim here as Beatrice, a woman seeking retribution. She blackmails Victor (Farrell), the right-hand man of New York City crime lord Alphonse (Terrence Howard), after she uncovers a very dark secret. Victor is also hell-bent on exacting his own revenge on Alphonse and once Beatrice begins to understand his sordid past, the pair forms an unlikely alliance. Fringe executive producer J.H.Wyman is re-
sponsible for the script which, although clunky at times, does manage to weave an effective little thriller. The chemistry and romantic tension between the leads is very effective; Farrell’s steely eyes command a vicious intensity, while Rapace exudes a beautiful sadness. Watch for solid but underused roles from veterans F. Murray Abraham and Armand Assante while the scene-stealing Dominic Cooper is excellent as Farrell’s criminal partner. Oplev keeps the camera angles dynamic with some well-staged action and Paul Cameron’s cinThor ematography soaks the film in a Diakow noirish cloak, befitting of the mood. A bloated mid-section hurts the movie and the story gets crowded as Wyman clearly had issues balancing dual revenge stories. Dead Man Down lacks the visceral punch and tightly wound screenplay of the filmmaker’s last picture but it does hold a few surprises and succeeds largely thanks to a strong cast.

Movie Reviews Stoker a chilling story of violent destiny STOKER
Starring Mia Wasikowska, Matthew Goode, Nicole Kidman Directed by Park Chan-wook While South Korea’s Park Chan-wook is best known on these shores for Oldboy — the middle chapter of his storied Vengeance Trilogy — his first foray into American filmmaking bears a stronger resemblance to 2009’s Thirst, a “vampire movie” that explored human nature’s darker aspects. Unsurprisingly, a change of scenery hasn’t altered Park’s worldview in the slightest. With her family’s isolated home serving as a cocoon, India Stoker (Mia Wasikowska, alluringly sullen) undergoes a metamorphosis that sees her shed her ill-fitting humanity and emerge a remorseless predator. The catalysts for such a transformation? The death of her loving father (Dermot Mulroney) and subsequent arrival of her sociopath uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode, a snake in man’s clothing). While Charlie toys with the affec-
tions of his brother’s emotionally fragile widow (Nicole Kidman), it’s evident that it’s dour India, with her penchant for Victorian aesthetics and contempt for social mores, that he views as an intimate. She simply needs is a little grooming when it comes to ghastly violence. Directing his first feature that he didn’t write himself (the script is by Wentworth Miller), Park nevertheless understands every fibre of the material and knows how best to push the twisted chamber play to its limits. Collaborating with longtime cinematographer Chung Chung-hoon, Park employs jarring camera movements, odd angles, and off-centre framing to illustrate the shifting dynamics between his unstable characters. Such formal bravura keeps the viewer off-balance and furthers the sickening sense that the only way that equilibrium will be restored to this world is by India accepting her true calling. With Park, comfort is always a dish best served cold. — Curtis Woloschuk

The Employment Program of British Columbia is funded by the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia.
As wildly entertaining as it is intellectually rigorous, Pablo Larraín’s No suggests that “truth in advertising” is all well and good but sometimes it’s only the suppression of awful truths that powers a high-stakes campaign to victory. Case in point: 1988’s Chilean national referendum which offered voters two options: “Yes” if they wanted Augusto Pinochet to continue his dictatorial reign; “No” if they wished to explore more democratic options. Filming in garish period-appropriate video, Pablo Larraín transports us back to this key moment in Chilean history and introduces the man charged with spearheading the “No” camp’s media campaign: progressive adman René Saavedra (Gael García Bernal in a role that utilizes both his compelling intensity and natural charisma).

While liberal politicians want to emphasize Pinochet’s human rights violations, René counters that playing on people’s fears will accomplish nothing. Instead, they need to sell them on the fantasy of a new Chile. As René stocks the “No” TV spots with catchy jingles and inane images, Larraín’s film boldly asserts that the path to victory is frequently blazed with compromise and offers little in the way of moral satisfaction. While some will undoubtedly label No as cynical, “clear-eyed” seems a more suitable descriptor. Particularly given its complex portrayal of René, who initially takes on the job for the challenge it represents and the opportunity to upstage his boss (Alfredo Castro) who’s a consultant for the “Yes” side. As his political resolve deepens, however, he likewise realizes that he may simply be a single-use cog in the democratic machine. Consequently, a story hinging on a yes-or-no answer ends on an intriguingly ambiguous note. — Curtis Woloschuk

As of Monday, March 11, the European Union has banned the sale of new cosmetic products tested on animals, effectively becoming the world’s largest cruelty-free cosmetics market. Currently, no such ban exists in Canada, the US or China. According to reports, while cosmetics companies censure the measure as a halt to innovation, the European Commission claims it is in line with the majority of thinking amongst European citizens, and rabbits, mice and guinea pigs are surely rubbing their eyes, for once, in disbelief.

Local fashion week takes on new direction A new production team and an intriguing mix of emerging and established designers are attempting to rewrite the book on VFW By Kelsey Klassen
S
helley Klassen rarely misses Vancouver Fashion Week; not only because she has shown a collection in almost every season of the long-standing local event, but because it’s an invaluable opportunity to network with designers from around the world. And in one week, those designers will arrive in Vancouver to showcase Fall/Winter 2013. From near collapse in 2006 and 2007, when the “week” was only two days, show producer Jamal Abdourahman has regrouped to build his event on the principle that it is for everybody (“We’re not here to dictate, ‘You’re good, you’re not good’”) — he casts models who have sometimes never walked in a show, and invites award-winning and emerging international designers who haven’t always had the opportunity to appear in the Parises and New Yorks of the fashion world. VFW now draws adrenaline- and coffee-addicted bloggers from as far away as Australia on the opportunity to see future supermodels (à la Coco Rocha), catch début success stories such as Ugandan label Kas Wear, or froth over collections such as the UK’s Jacob Kimmie (Sat. March 23), for example. In contrast to the model of other fashion weeks, such as those run by IMG, Abdourahman keeps his event fiercely independent. And while that has sometimes led to catwalk chaos (55 designers and 20,000 attendees over the five days), it is also what makes Vancouver Fashion Week so important to local talent. Tapped to close opening night, Klassen loves the buzz it creates. “ It gets people excited about fashion! It gives people in Vancouver — my clientele — the opportunity to take part in something fun, creative and entertaining. The beauty is that it is accessible to the public.” After showing a collection, Klassen says not only does it translate to increased sales at her boutique, but increased camaraderie. “It’s a great opportunity to meet and chat up other people in the industry as we all tend to get bogged down in our own world of design and production, and there is really a lot we can learn from one another. Because I have my own boutique in the city, it not only exposes my work to new potential clients, but it gives my existing clients the opportunity to see the clothing on bodies. My designs are cut for real women (woman have curves!) and hanger appeal doesn’t always cut it.”
WEVancouver.com
A veteran of six VFW collections so far (missing the odd one due to childbirth, etc.), Klassen hasn’t always been immune to the pressures backstage. “At my very first VFW show, going back maybe 10 years now, I was so nervous I couldn’t eat that day. Just as the show was about to start, I felt as if I was going to faint and found myself yelling like a drama queen ‘Someone bring me a banana!’ These days I am more excited than nervous to show my work.” Klassen’s fans know to expect feminine silhouettes and exquisite tailoring, but, this season, bold prints, lace surprises, and a range of colours from bright jewel tones to shimmering pastel wrap up the modern romantic. “This collection is all about making a statement and saying ‘This is who I am!’ Think Kate Middleton: beautiful, confident and sophisticated, yet very feminine.” After studying haute couture design, sewing and pattern-making at the Richard Robinson Academy in Ottawa, the Canadian designer was drawn to the beauty of the West Coast, and is passionate about keeping her manufacturing in Canada, and her production in Vancouver. “I still do all my own patterns, as this is part of the design process for me.” Klassen, as a community builder in her own right (hosting events and carrying upwards of 15 other Canadian designers at Blushing Boutique, 579 Richards), is a stalwart example of what Abdourahman and the team of volunteers at Vancouver Fashion Week set out to do. “It is all about creating a great community and energy in the city,” says Klassen. With new sponsors, such as Boboli and the Four Seasons Hotel Vancouver, and creative talent such as Lawrence McDonald, Nadia Palcich Lago and Diana Zoppa joining Abdourahman at the helm, one could say that Vancouver Fashion Week (March 19-24) is moving in a new direction by counting on the maturity of the talent it has helped develop. Fashion Week kicks off with an Opening Gala and Boboli runway show, March 19 at the Four Seasons (791 West Georgia). The shows then run March 20-24 at Chinese Cultural Centre. For designer, schedule and ticket information visit VanFashionWeek.com. Enter to win a pair of passes to opening night (March 20) by going to WEVancouver.com/contests. Free Will Astrology #Z 3PC #SF[TOZ r Week of March 14 ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19): “If it’s stupid and it works, it’s not stupid. That could turn out to be a useful mantra. Being pragmatic should be near the top of your priority list, whereas being judgmental should be at the bottom. Here’s another: “Those who take history personally are condemned to repeat it.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22): When Hal Roach worked on scripts with his team of writers, he sometimes employed an unusual strategy to overcome writer’s block. He’d bring in a “Wildie to join them at the conference table. A Wildie was either a random drunk or a person who lived in an insane asylum. They’d engage him in conversation about the story they were working on, and he would provide unexpected ideas that opened their minds to new possibilities. Solicit creative disruptions!

CANCER (JUNE 21-JULY 22): In the mid-19th century, prospectors mined for gold in the mountains of western Nevada. Work was hampered by a gluey blue mud that gummed up their machinery. But on a hunch, one miner took a load of the blue gunk to be analyzed. He discovered that it contained rich deposits of silver. I suggest you be on the alert for a metaphorical version of blue mud in your sphere: an “inconvenience that seems to interfere with the treasure you seek, but that is actually quite valuable.

SCORPIO (OCT. 23-NOV. 21): “I am iron resisting the most enormous Magnet there is, wrote the Sufi mystic poet Rumi. He was wistfully bemoaning his own stubborn ignorance, which tricked him into refusing a more intimate companionship with the Blessed Source of all life. SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21): NASA used whale oil to lubricate the Hubble Space Telescope and Voyager spacecrafts. Whale oil doesn’t freeze at the low temperatures found in outer space. While I certainly don’t approve of killing whales to obtain their oil, it’s an excellent time for you, too, to use old-school approaches for solving ultra-newschool problems. CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19): The “butterfly effect proposes that a butterfly flapping its wings in China may ultimately impact the weather in New York. Here’s how the writer Richard Bernstein explains it: “Very slight, nearly infinitesimal variations and the enormous multiplicity of interacting variables produce big differences in the end. It suggests that every little thing you do sends out ripples of influence that help shape the kind of world you live in. This is an excellent time to experiment. Put loving care and intelligent attention into every little thing. AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18): Former football quarterback Joe Ayoob holds the world’s record for throwing a paper airplane the longest distance; the delicate craft travelled over 226 feet. I propose we make Ayoob your patron saint and role model. You will have a similar challenge, at least metaphorically: blending power and strength with precision and finesse and control. It’s time to move a fragile thing or process as far as possible. PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20): A source of fulfillment you will enjoy in the future may seem almost painful when it initially announces its presence. Your situation has a certain resemblance to that of composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky. When he was a precocious child, he was assailed by the melodies and rhythms that frequently surged through his mind. “This music! This music! he complained to his mother. “Take it away! It’s here in my head and won’t let

Goodbye, Dunsmuir I can’t wait till they tear down the Dunsmuir corridor. And could you rename the street? Did they have to name one of our major downtown roads after an immoral coal baron?
