A change to hunting regulations to make the pursuit more accessible to youth and first-time hunters isn’t a win situation, says the president of the Trail Wildlife Association. Although Terry Hanik acknowledged the impetus behind the province-wide change as a way to get more people involved in hunting, he felt a

free-for-all attitude could ensue. The changes to the Youth Hunting Licence now make it available for youth aged 10 to 17 years inclusive. Previously, the age range of the youth (‘junior’) hunting licence was 10 to 13 years. The amendments also create a new Initiation Hunting Licence, a mentoring licence that allows a person 18 years or older who has nev-

er previously held a hunting licence in B.C. to try hunting for a one-year period. It is a one-time-only licence. “This just means more people out there shooting and whether they get animals or not ... it’s too easy for everybody, there’s no training,” Hanik said. “And, as a result, I don’t think those people will keep it up after a year of free hunting.” Hanik also point-

ed to the dwindling number of mule deer in the region as another reason not to throw open the doors to more hunters. “The game isn’t out there. It might be in other places, but not here,” he said. “Our deer count is down and has been dropping for a few years.” The changes to the Youth Hunting Licence are expected to make it easier for youth ages 14 to 17 to give hunting a try and

to have more mentorship opportunities. The regulatory amendments to the Wildlife Act also benefit resident hunters and represent an opportunity for those new to hunting to try the experience with a limited commitment and under the supervision of an experienced mentor, said Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, Steve Thomson, in a press release.

“It is anticipated that the new licence options will promote hunting uptake among B.C. residents and provide another opportunity for families to get out and enjoy B.C.’s backcountry,” he said. Although Hanik spoke for the local association—the B.C. Wildlife Federation supports the change—he will still take the change to the local membership on

March 25 for feedback. Hunting regulation changes will be discussed at that meeting to deal with the lower count of mule deer in the area. The government is introducing the new Initiation Hunting Licence at $19 ($15 licence fee plus $4 Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation surcharge). The cost of the Youth Hunting Licence is still only $7.

On March 6, 2013 at approximately 9:45 a.m., Midway RCMP and Fire & Rescue responded to a single vehicle collision on Hwy 3 approximately 7.5 kms east of Greenwood. Police said an initial investigation revealed the sole occupant of a 1997 Chevy Tahoe was traveling westbound on Hwy 3 and lost control entering a sharp corner. The driver, identified as 70-year-old Shiela Ann Hackett

of Grand Forks was transported to Grand Forks Hospital but later succumbed to her injuries. Road conditions were slippery with some slush and light snow falling at the time. An investigation is still ongoing by West Kootenay Traffic Services and the Coroner Service. Winter conditions are still prevalent in the Kootenay region and police remind motorists they need to be cautious and drive according to road conditions.

Every year for March 8, the Hospital Employees’ Union honours the accomplishments of women around the world as International Women’s Day is celebrated. Outside their office at 745 Baker Street, Gail Neufeld and Brenda Klock handed out flowers in celebration while shar-

ing about the need for continued advancement of women’s empowerment and gender equality worldwide. Work still needs to happen to end violence against women and girls. The following statistics were shared: Up to 50 per cent of sexual assaults are committed against girls under the age of 16.

Globally, 603 million women live in countries where domestic violence is not yet considered a crime. Up to 70 per cent of women in the world report having experienced physical and/ or sexual violence at some point in their lifetime. Grand Forks hotel fires, one year later Grand Forks briefs George Genich called the Grand Forks Hotel home for 13 years before the arson-instigated fire on March 7, 2012, burned the hotel to the ground. “All my belongings were burned in that fire, my mother’s wedding ring, my family pictures and all my

writing manuscripts,” said the 83-year-old Grand Forks resident. “I woke up hearing people shouting fire, fire, fire, so I grabbed my clothes and left,” he said. “I didn’t think anything bad at first because the fire hall was so close.” Dog owners worried about possible new law Advertorial

New retirement community becomes popular social hub by Kathleen Thomas A mere three short months since the official opening of Silver Kettle Village, Grand Forks’ newest retirement community, and the place is already a hub of social activity. Residents barely had time to unpack treasured possessions before they were able to meet and mingle with other like-minded, independent seniors. The activities schedule is designed to give everyone the chance to socialize at their own speed. From a basic game of cribbage to full day outings, residents find they can choose activities that best meet their needs. The biggest event for February, a Valentine’s Day Dance, had Silver Kettle Village dwellers and dance enthusiasts from town cutting a rug to local band Buck Naked and the Saddle Tramps. The band, as well known for their music as for the fact that Grand Forks mayor Brian Taylor is a founding member, dished out their popular brand of bluesy country rock. The regular dances held at Silver Kettle Village are a fun way to spend an evening with your spouse or to meet new friends and dance partners. Plentiful refreshments wait on the sidelines. “With all the chores I used to do at home, I didn’t have time to think about social activities,” said Kay Hummel. “But since I moved here I don’t have to worry about a thing. All the housekeeping, transportation, security and meals are provided so I can spend more time with my friends. Like enjoying the Valentine’s Dance.” Programming at Silver Kettle Village is designed to meet the needs of all types, from folks who prefer more alone time to regular social butterflies. “We want residents here to feel like they are in a village, with all the opportunities and benefits a small community can provide. This can be anything from a friendly smile in the morning to a walk with

a friend or a full-on dance party,” said Community Manager, Michele Shillaker. Healthy social activities are a key element of programming at the Village. Residents can participate as much as they wish in classes, outings and walks down the treed streets of the city. Because the seniors at Silver Kettle Village are invested in living their best lives, they can mingle in the common areas or have favorite guests to visit in their private suites. Grandkids are always keen to be invited to a sleepover with their grandparents. But social options aren’t the only ones packed into the monthly calendar. There are artistic, fitness and spiritual choices as well. Highlights of the past month included a Super Bowl party for sports fans, a guest appearance by can-can dancers and Chinese New Year’s celebrations. The calendar for March is also packed with events. Residents are looking forward to a bus trip that includes an art gallery visit and lunch at Omega, musical performances, a special Easter dinner buffet, and a ‘50s themed lunch at the Village with favorite foods of that era, By the time local officials cut the ribbon on the newly constructed community in December 2012, most of the 48 independent living units at Silver Kettle Village were already spoken for. A near-full house now means there are plenty of options for forming new friendships and finding new hobbies. The balance of independence, privacy, staff hospitality and security is the priority for this retirement community. Hospitality services included in the affordable monthly rent and include weekly housekeeping, 24 hour emergency monitoring, shuttle bus service, and hot, delicious meals prepared by on-site chefs. For more information you can call Silver Kettle Village at (250) 442-0667 or visit goldenlife.ca.

Drinking water worries soon to be a memory in Montrose Trail briefs This summer, for the first time in two years, the residents of Montrose will be able to turn on the tap to quench their thirst, without the need to boil it first. The village is in the final stages of construction of a new pump house and chlorination facility. At the Monday night council meeting, Kevin Chartres, chief administrative officer, provided an update related to the water supply improvements project. “The projected date to finish the construction is April 30th,” he said. The pre-cast building is constructed; interior painting has been completed; and electrical started running in the building on Friday, explained Chartres. He added the chlorine contact chamber is being cleaned of excess ‘drippings’ and grout work is being completed. Additionally, sampling for hazardous materials at both pump houses have been competed by Kootenay Hazmat Services, he said. “We are getting really busy with all the trades on sight,” said Chartres. “A lot will be happening over the next six weeks.” Even with the construction completion date in sight, lifting the boil water advisory will take a bit more time, he said. Chartres explained that the village will need to provide clean bacteriological samples to BC Drinking Water Protection Regulation, to demonstrate that the facility is working. “The boil water ban can only be lifted after clean samples have been passed,” he said. New Year’s Bus could be bye-bye Last call is pending on free bus rides to New Year’s Eve revel-

ers after “rowdy youth” surrounded a bus in Rossland in January and started banging on it. Coupled with “general bad behaviour,” the actions prompted RCMP and the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary

(RDKB) — who offers the service in partnership with BC Transit — to review the free one-day service. RDKB CAO John MacLean said the regional district has made everybody aware of the problems stemming from the

incident and concerns were raised. But the matter won’t be officially addressed until RDKB board and sub-committee budgets are nailed down, pushing a decision back to the fall. “We’re kind of caught in a quandary.

The reason we run that service is so drunk people don’t drive, and then drunk people act like drunk people,” he said. “Clearly we are very troubled that people felt threatened, and there were people not of the rowdy nature

Through the Walls of Time

Ainsworth (Hotsprings) was named for Portland capitalists greg nesteroff West Kootenay Advertiser

Second in a series on local place names. The first printed reference to Ainsworth Hot Springs, the oldest mining camp on Kootenay Lake, appeared in a legal ad in the Victoria Daily Colonist of September 8, 1882, in which George J. Ainsworth (1852-95) applied to buy 160 acres of land, “Commencing at a stake on the West shore of Kootenay Lake, about eight miles north of the Hot Springs ...” Ainsworth’s father John (1822-93), of Portland, was a successful steamboat operator on the Columbia River. The area’s mining potential attracted the pair, not the hot springs themselves.

The naming of this popular destination, as with so many other locations, is a fascinating one. Submitted

They received a charter to build a railway from the confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia rivers to present day Balfour, but John later wrote bitterly of this failed enterprise, blaming both the provincial government and their agent, Gustav B. Wright. It’s unclear if either Ainsworth ever saw their namesake

town — author Ted Affleck suggested in High Grade and Hot Springs that George visited in 1890, but didn’t cite his source. Ainsworth was first known as Hot Springs Camp or Warm Springs Camp. The earliest use of the former was in the Spokane Falls Review of November 7, 1888: “The Hot Springs camp is 145 miles

from Bonner (or Bonner’s landing) …” and the first use of the latter in the Spokane Morning Review on January 1, 1889: “From Mr. Sweet it was learned that the Warm Springs Mining Camp referred to in the above is comparatively new, it having been discovered some two years ago.” The townsite, however, was called

Ainsworth, and was referred to as such by Randall H. Kemp in the Spokane Falls Review of June 2, 1889. But the old name was more common, for as Fred Herb wrote in the same newspaper on August 4 of that year: “Some people call the place Ainsworth, but Warm Springs is certainly more appropriate and more symphonistic.” The names were first combined as Ainsworth Hot

Life

Springs in Nelson Daily News headline on March 23, 1911, when an attempt was being made to develop the springs as a resort, but it didn’t catch on until decades later. The post office opened on December 1, 1890 as Ainsworth and was renamed Ainsworth Hot Springs on January 11, 1964 to promote tourism at the suggestion of resort proprietor Sam Homen, with the support of

the Kaslo Board of Trade. (A similar proposal a few years ago to change Nakusp to Nakusp Hot Springs was soundly defeated in a referendum.) A Ktunaxa name for Ainsworth, a’k1nuxleétna’na, was recorded by Alexander F. Chamberlain in 1891 and mentioned in a collection of myths he and anthropologist Franz Boas compiled in 1918. Blueberry Creek Community School: A great community service From the outside Blueberry Creek Community School (BCCS) looks like any typical small older rural elementary school but BCCS is anything but typical. BCCS is a Ministry of Education designated Neighbourhood of Learning and a Ministry of Children and Family Development designated Community HUB. Both ministerial designations acknowledge and celebrate the innovation and successes achieved by this small community based charitable non-profit that provides services which foster and build community and are tailored to meet the needs of our local area. BCCS was established in 1997 when Blueberry Elementary school was closed, and School District 20 made the proac-

tive, forward thinking and efficient decision to lease space to BCCS, enabling this society to contribute to the community in a range of positive and far reaching ways. Today BCCS is a hive of activity. It hosts the Provincial Strongstart program, which is a parent and child education program for the 0-6 age group. The institution is home to a preschool, with four classes and 60 children, who re-

ceive early education and intervention services in a caring and nurturing environment ensuring a successful and lasting start to their educational journey. BCCS operates a 3-5 year old daycare and an after school care program, guaranteeing that parents feel happy to go to work knowing that their children are cared for in a stimulating, educational and nurturing environment. BCCS has extensive community gardens and green infrastructure including composting and rainwater recycling facilities, where the children at the centre and the community in general can learn about and experience healthy sustainable lifestyles while truly enjoying and benefiting from the natural environment. The community

school also hosts a community lending library for both adults and children and facilitates many lifestyle and community based initiatives such as seniors coffees, literacy programs, exercise classes, bluegrass and parent education programs to name a few. It also partners with several community organizations to offer outreach programs in Castlegar schools, including the 360 Leadership Program at Twin Rivers Elementary. This active community hub is at the centre of the rural community of Blueberry. However, as a result of their innovative and extensive programs they enjoy and welcome attendees from all of Castlegar and as far away as Rossland and Trail.

Community/Provincial In terms of polio eradication, pennies really are from heaven ralysis. According to the website of the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, polio remains virtually unchecked in three countries (Nigeria, Pakistan and Afghanistan) but it is possible for it to spread; cases have been reported elsewhere. Though there is no cure, there are effective vaccines; the trick is getting them to those in need. “The medication itself has to be cooled and we go into areas with civil wars going on and various political machinations,” said Hughes. We all have jars, drawers, or shoeboxes filling up with now defunct pennies and the Castlegar Sunrise 2000 Rotary Club wants to use them to help end polio once and for all. Rotarian Fred Hughes is organizing a “Pennies for Polio” drive in Castlegar and is willing to pick them up, at almost any time. “I’m retired so I have the time,” laughed Hughes. Polio is a viral disease that can affect nerves and can lead to partial or full pa-

systems in place to deliver the vaccines, it takes a concerted effort between fundraisers and delivery services to provide the vaccines. Overall, the annual incidence of polio

has decreased more than 99 per cent since a global effort to eradicate the disease was launched in 1988, according to information provided from Hughes by email.

In several cases there are matching donations available, and Castlegar’s PM Rotary club found a way to stretch those beneficial dollars even further, finding out about a matching program offered by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) as well as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. “The federal grant program was initiated a while back, I believe,” said local PM Rotary spokesman Ron Armbruster on March 11. “So we found $3,333.33 in our budget and made an

effective $10,000 donation.” The donation was made two days before the deadline of February 28. Canadian Rotarians have raised over $1.6 million for the Pennies for Polio initiative. Helping Rotary with this initiative is local radio station Mountain FM. They are accepting pennies for those in the area who are able to stop in and drop them off. “We are delighted to do our part to help the global effort and raise pennies for polio,” said Kevin Einarson, general

manager at Mountain FM. “They will be given to key organizations — like Rotary and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation — who are getting the vaccination to impoverished children. “I’d like to invite all our listeners and the passing public in Castlegar to come by our 4th Street studio downtown to say hello and drop off those pennies … they’re only making holes in your pockets anyway!” Hughes can be reached at 250-3655530 to arrange pickup of those pesky pennies.

Ethnic strategy is nothing new tom fletcher Black Press

VICTORIA – The B.C. legislature session ends this week. It can’t come quickly enough for Premier Christy Clark and the B.C. Liberals. This is also the week we see the rest of the fallout from “ethnic-gate,” as the latest controversy over partisan activity by political staff has been clumsily labelled. A disgruntled former B.C. Liberal caucus staffer handed the NDP opposition an internal memo setting out a strategy for ethnic “outreach” that strayed into forbidden territory, suggesting that ethnic-friendly government events could be staged and participants’ names collected and turned over to the party. “This secret plan clearly demonstrates the Liberals are deliberately folding government resources and staff into their party’s campaign machinery, despite rules that forbid this,” thundered NDP

house leader John Horgan. “We’ve seen this before, with the Liberals’ efforts to run a secret committee to subvert the public process around Burnaby Hospital, and in the attack website created by caucus staff and launched by the Liberal party.” Casual observers might see this as a disturbing new development in misuse of public resources. It’s disturbing, all right, but it’s hardly new. The “attack website” Horgan refers to is a case in point. While a website targeting NDP leader Adrian Dix was being cooked up in the B.C. Liberal bunker, a similar effort was being developed in NDP research down the hall. This partisan message detailed all the worthwhile things that could be done with the government’s $15 million advertising budget singing the praises of the government’s “jobs plan.” But this one carried the logo of the NDP caucus, so it was within the rules.

Sports Derby dames ready for national competition Valerie Rossi Contributed

West Kootenay Roller Derby’s all-star team has managed to climb to the top of the heap in Canadian Roller Derby, and they’ve done it in a remarkably quick fashion. The Kootenay Kannibelles are gearing up for some high-calibre derby at a national level tournament set to take place at West Edmonton Mall’s Ice Palace March 15-17. Belles captain and West Kootenay Roller Derby League marketing and media director Amber Harper, who is best known as ‘Pantsoff ’, is excited that what she describes as their “rag-tag troupe of mismatched-jersey-wearing ladies” are getting the opportunity to represent British Columbia in the first ever Roller Derby Association of Canada’s Canadian National Championships. No small feat, as she explains that they’ve “only been playing for two seasons as a team; most of (them) only just learned how to skate with the birth of West Kootenay Roller Derby, so this is pretty incredible.”

T.Mo Kannibelles “jammer” leaving a path of destruction in her wake. Naz King Photography

The Belles are ranked sixth in the country (out of 101 travel teams), which earned them a spot in the tournament. However, the blood-splattered team is entering nationals with a new roster, featuring some new all-star players ready to make their mark on Canadian roller derby, bruise by well-earned bruise. Up against some top teams – including E-Ville Roller Derby (Edmonton, AB), Central – Saskatoon Roller Derby League (Saskatoon, SK), Pile

O’ Bones Derby Club (Regina, SK), Atlantic – Muddy River Rollers (Moncton, NB) and Fog City Rollers (Saint John, NB) – the Belles are fiercely gearing up for some hard-hitting derby and have their eyes firmly on the gold medal prize. With an impressive 8-1 record last season, B.C.’s dark-horse team is certainly rolling into this, their third competitive season, hungrier for results than ever. After debuting at the Roller Derby Associations

of Canada’s Western Tournament in 2011, the Belles shocked both fans and fellow skaters by finishing fifth after only one loss – a five-point nail-biting triumph by Red Deer’s Belladonnas. Their competitive appetite not sated, the Belles then went on to take second place in the RDAC Western Tournament in June 2012, after coming out on the losing side of a hard-fought battle against Terminal City Roller Girls’ All Stars, who secured their victory by 84

points. With this history in mind, it’s no wonder these ladies are approaching this tournament with ferocious appetites for victory. The team is currently busy prepping for spring, not only on but also off the track as they fundraise to help offset the costs of travel and accommodation (they are also looking for season sponsors). The Belles are hoping to raise funds through the Fundscript program where they sell gift cards for major retailers and the retailers pay a percentage of the dollar value of cards bought to the team. “Calling it a “no fuss, no stress fundraiser,” Pantsoff explains Belles are selling gift cards for 100-plus retailers. “No buying useless junk,” she says. “Just get the card for the denomination and retailer you want and we get the kick back from the supplier.” The Belles hope to see some hardcore fans at the nationals, but at the very least are looking forward to the kick-off of the local season, where some of these savage skaters will be hitting the rink with their home teams.

Phoenix Mountain Park Jam set for take-off this weekend sascha porteous West Kootenay Advertiser

Phoenix Mountain is encouraging freestyle skiers and snowboarders to head up to the ski hill this Sunday for its sixth annual park jam. Snow sport enthusiasts will throw down their most creative tricks in the rail jam and big air contest. “Our first session is the rail jam which

starts at 10 a.m. and then we will relocate at 1 p.m. for our big air contest,” said Phoenix Mountain Manager Chris Nason. Riders of all ages and abilities will have a chance to take multiple runs through the rail course, which includes upwards of five rails and the jump course, which consists of three consecutive jumps, the largest being a 12-metre (40-

foot) kicker. Two shops have sponsored the event this year – Ripping Giraffe Board Shop (Nelson) and Ross Vegas (Rossland) – who will donate both prizes and event judges. The first place winner will take home an estimated $500 cash prize. “We expect that this years sponsors will draw out twice as many competitor as

last event,” said Nason. “We expect to have around 40 to 50 competitors.” There are also tons of opportunities for spectators to come out and watch the freestyle competition. Registration starts at 9 a.m. at Phoenix Mountain, a $15 registration fee will be charged for amateurs and $20 for professionals.

Phoenix Mountain between Grand Forks and Greenwood will be the site of the Phoenix Park Jam this Sunday. Submitted

Planning family meals will save you time, energy and money Submitted

March is Nutrition Month, but really every month is nutrition month. I always look forward to March; it is the time of year we get our first glimpse of spring. The days start to get a little longer and the wind is almost warm. It’s also the time I begin to contemplate gardening and the delicious things I will plant this year in my

attempt to grow my own vegetables. My gardening dreams aside, I find this time of year very busy as I juggle the time demands of work, school, pets, swim lessons and family time. One of the best things I have done to save myself time, energy and money is plan weekly meals in advance. Ideally a monthly meal plan would be great, but even a week at a

time can work wonders. Here’s how I have made meal planning work for me – maybe some of these ideas will work for you too. The first and most important thing I do is brainstorm some meal ideas that I know my family will like. The brainstorm-

ing phase can be fun. I ask friends, family and co-workers for their favourite recipes. Once I have collected some great ideas, I go through them and see which ones will work. Sometimes I modify the recipes to suit our tastes, dietary preferences, and needs. Then I look at the

week’s activities to see if there are any days that are busier than others. I find it helps to use a crock pot on those days or make larger meals on the weekend in order to reheat leftovers throughout the week. Another great time-saving tip I have discovered is to double up at least two

of the recipe ideas each week, preferably those that are family favourites and will freeze well. Once I have my top five to seven recipes, its time to write out a grocery list. I start by taking inventory and going through my cupboard, pantry and fridge to see if there are any items on the grocery list that I already have or may need more of. Once my list

is complete, I chose a good time for shopping. I’ve learned that for me this means not shopping when hungry. Having a healthy snack before I enter the store helps keep me focused on my list and reduces temptation to buy other food. Happy Shopping!

Joe Hill Coffee House having special St. Patrick’s Day show Arne Petryshen West Kootenay Advertiser

This Sunday the Joe Hill Coffee House will brew up another batch of talented performances as the monthly concert takes on an Irish vibe. Co-organizer Les Carter says they’re prepared for the special day’s performance. “It’s a great place to relax with your friends and see the Koote-

nays’ finest perform,” Carter said the program will lead off with three young dancers from Kootenay Dance Works in Rossland. Then Terry and Janet Marshall return to Rossland from their new home in Kaslo to lead Pickled Thistle and Friends in an extended set with an Irish theme. That will be followed up by Jonathan Provencal and friends

from the Tuques as they go Dublin-style for the show. Joe Hill Coffee House regular Paul Bowles will bring a collection of new rhythms and words of wisdom for the audience to ponder. Musician Andy Ross will bring an assorted bag of tunes to perform. Finally, Kootenay Jack and Bert Kniss will wrap up the show,

with a promise to add both Celtic and Kootenay Jack flair to round out the evening’s performances. Snacks and other goodies will be provided by the Rossland Secondary School Interact Club. Doors open at 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Rossland Miners’ Hall, with the show starting at 7 p.m. Admission is $3 (free for kids and students).

The Foggy Goggle Boys put on a performance at last month’s Joe Hill Coffee House. The next instalment is this Sunday, and organizers are promising a St. Patrick’s Day themed extravaganza. Arne Petryshen

Looking past fundraising SUBMITTED

(Columbia Basin) – Fundraising is a familiar activity for non-profit organizations, but the West Kootenay Women’s Association is hoping to find a way to spend less time seeking money and more time delivering benefits to the community. For over 40 years, the association has been serving women throughout the West Kootenay region, through services like peer counselling and free food and clothing. With over $2,500 in support from Columbia Basin Trust (CBT), the association has hired a consultant for a one-day workshop and six months of follow-up support in order to explore alternative sources of revenue and create a more stable long-term financial model.

“Our current model was created when there was provincial funding for women’s centres,” said Tasha Bassingthwaighte, executive director, West Kootenay Women’s Association. “Since this funding was cut eight years ago, we’ve been having a hard time filling the gap.” The goal is to find a new approach that will allow the association to continue to provide supports to women without relying on core funding from government. “By working toward a more sustainable financial model,” said Bassingthwaighte, “we’ll be able to shift staff time and energy away from our bank account and toward the community.” “This is a unique approach to addressing an issue that affects so many of our

region’s non-profit organizations,” said Rona Park, CBT Community Liaison. “The women’s association is to be commended on this initiative to deepen their understanding of their finances.” The association runs the Nelson and District Women’s Centre—the oldest rural women’s centre in Canada—which is located in Nelson and serves the whole West Kootenay region. To learn more about the association and the centre, visit www.nelsonwomenscentre.com. CBT supports efforts to deliver social, economic and environmental benefits to the residents of the Columbia Basin. To learn more about the various assortment of CBT programs and initiatives, visit www.cbt.org or call 1.800.505.8998.

Sometimes fewer choices is good Ethnic strategy nothing new La Dolce Vita

By Lorne Eckersley, pulbisher of the Creston Valley Advance, a Black Press publication Over the years, Angela and I have become less enthusiastic about large wine tasting events, our preference trending toward smaller, more intimate ones. So we were quite happy when we walked into the Flavours of British Columbia fundraiser recently. Organized by Alberta Theatre Projects and held in the lower level of Willow Park Wines and Spirits in Calgary, the tasting featured several food stations, live music, a silent auction and wines from 14 members of the Naramata Bench Wineries Association. Perfect. We had only eaten the appies designed

to match with our tasting earlier in the evening, so we headed directly to a food table that was serving up open-faced sandwiches featuring lamb or chicken. They were scrumptious and a few minutes later we were wandering around the room. The selection of wines was small enough that no particular plan of action was necessary. Walk into a tasting featuring 600 wines, which we have done on more than a few occasions, and one had better have a plan. Or face becoming completely overwhelmed in a matter of minutes. The only real downside of a small tasting is that there is no particular sense of urgency among those in attendance. People tend to settle in front of a winery’s tasting table and leisurely taste their way through the selec-

tion, chatting with the server or their friends. In a larger event, one can expect to get elbowed or brushed aside, sometimes not so gently, when others around sense you have overstayed your welcome. Of course, I was guilty a couple of times, myself. I never sample wines without moving aside, and not only out of consideration for others. As a spitter, I first head directly for a spit bucket, which is inevitably set at the end of the table, and used only occasionally. But I did take up several minutes in front of the D’Angelo Estate Winery and Serendipity Winery stations so that I could catch up with Sal D’Angelo and Judy Kingston, the wineries’ respective owners. They are among my favourite people on the Naramata Bench and I

wasn’t about to pass up the chance to find out what each was up to in the wineries. While the wineries present represented only about half of the Naramata makers, the selection was a good one. Small producers like Kettle Valley, La Frenz and Van Westen competed comfortably with the bigger and better known Hillside Estate, Poplar Grove, Monster Vineyards and Red Rooster. Visitors to Naramata often miss the chance to stop into Laughing Stock because the wines sell out quickly. A chance to taste those wines in a casual setting was a treat. Elephant Island Orchard Wines was a popular site among the curious, who were inevitably impressed at the high quality of the products. Lake Breeze is always a welcome participant.

Continued from P. A8

The average person, seeing two groups of staff on the public payroll, each slagging the other, might not detect much of a difference. The biggest headline from the leaked memo was its reference to generating “quick wins” for the election campaign by staging apologies for historic racial injustices. It mentioned how former premier Gordon Campbell delivered a solemn apology in 2008 for the decision to turn away a ship carrying Sikh refugees from Vancouver harbour – shortly after the outbreak of the First World War. What does a modern provincial premier accomplish by apologizing for a federal immigration decision made in 1915?

Why would another premier now feel the need to apologize for a federal “head tax” imposed on Chinese immigrants from 1885 to 1923? The answer is obvious. Again, don’t expect much to change with an NDP government. Asked last week if he would stage an apology for the head tax, Dix delivered a well-rehearsed history lesson that made it clear he is anxious to do so. Welcome to politics in an urbanized, globalized media culture. It’s more important to put on a show than to do the right thing. Hospitals are announced three times before they’re built, then announced again when they are staffed. Politics is a lucrative career. Former B.C. Liberal MLA Lorne Mayencourt is

one of the additional “outreach” staff handpicked by Clark. The B.C. Liberals retort that the NDP caucus has a similar staffer named Gabriel Yiu, who has taken three leaves of absence to run for MLA, and is in practical terms a professional NDP candidate. Yiu is running for a fourth time in Vancouver-Fraser view, having been defeated in 2009 by former West Vancouver police chief Kash Heed. That campaign was notorious for anonymous Chinese-language pamphlets claiming the NDP favours legalizing drugs and imposing a “death tax” on inheritance. This latest scandal might produce meaningful reform. But the misuse of public money to further the interests of political parties is deeply entrenched.

Horoscope Michael O’Connor

for the

Week

March 15, 2013

Tip of the Week:The last days of winter are symbolic of the deeper reaches of Pisces. This is akin to the pre-dawn glow that emerges from the darkest, coldest period of the night. The influence of last week’s New Moon will linger for the next few weeks. Yet it will increasingly play a background role as the energies of Aries take the stage. In addition to the Sun entering Aries marking Equinox, Mars is also there and will form an exact conjunction with Uranus (March 22) followed by a hard aspect to Pluto on the 26th. This will have an igniting effect. With so many revolutions rumbling, this next cycle will produce much more action and drama. The uproar in the clear face of corruption such as the forced implementation of Smart Meters, Geoengineering (chemtrails, no not contrails; look-up, learn the difference) and Bill C51 are a few examples of an old order in its desperate death throes – the proof of preventative medicine and solar power are on the rapid rise. Further, the cry of crimes against humanity linked to the Roman Catholic Church and the recent resignation of Pope Benedict XIV (16 – the Tower) revealing a web of deception literally millennia old. The steady fall of icons and would be and has been heroes all symbolize the light of a new day. Much has been at play in the night, a good deal of it foul, so this dawn brings with it many rude awakenings. Spring 2013 is here, the year of the skin shedding Snake. And the first official year post 12-21-2012 is certainly delivering as promised. Perhaps the cataclysms said to have dealt a sudden decline at this time in the previous ‘great year’ is coming about differently, perhaps a slower death. Then again Comet Ison cometh…

PISCES (FEB 19 – MAR 20)

You are in a revolutionary mood, as if suddenly. Ideally this will manifest as major and significant initiatives. Be careful not to let this energy lead you to regretful reactions. Handled well, this powerful impulse could catapult you into promising new territory. Significant change is imminent; deliberate self-controlled direction is required.

Many dreams and ambitions are brewing on both conscious and subconscious levels. As with dreaming, your focus may not be so clear and/or others may not be clear with you. At worst, this lack of clarity is obscuring denials and deceptions within your own mind and/or coming from others. Like entering a patch of fog while driving, proceed slowly with due caution.

Shifts, changes and initiatives in your public and/or professional spheres have begun. These are leading you into new territory. Exciting exchanges with friends new and old are featured. Yet things are not as they were nor do you want them to be. You want to make a fresh start and woe to anyone preventing you from doing just that.

New visions, perceptions, beliefs or at least imaginings have been activated. These vistas of your higher mind are allowing you to truly see. Perhaps it is your own soul, or family member’s or humanity as a whole. This inner sight might not be easy to bear, however. It takes courage, strength and responsibility. This is a call to learn how and/or perhaps to show others.

A process of rebirth is underway. The flip side is endings. Either way, a regenerative phase has begun. Since this is destined to occur and is actually happening for you, choosing to consciously cooperate is wise. The more willing and able you are to see yourself and the world and in it, in new ways, the better. Break habits, change patterns, clear, clean and renew!

The seeds of change have been sown in your relationships. These are affecting your home and family and your career and worldly status. Expansion and risk taking is implied, even required. Yet, so too is caution. The influence of Pisces is still lingering and is likely obscuring perceptions, creating confusion and even deceptions. Be extra clear in all exchanges.

The call to strengthen your constitution continues to sound like a steady whistle in the wind. Deciphering what to do is your basic task. Nurturing your body with medicinal herbs and supplements and wholesome food is the proactive way of wisdom. Your clean body and strong constitution will lay the foundation for mental and emotional balance as well.

In terms of creative possibilities, you have hit upon a vein of gold. Your main obstacle now tends to be too much talk and not enough walk. This is certainly not the time to be a spectator. This is your cue to take the stage. Your spirit is calling. Are you willing to answer? Meditate upon what is your truth. Feel it, realize it, accept it and…action!

Some major events are unfolding close to home. Out with the old should be especially clear. The new is coming but is not here quite yet. The old may well include stuff or it could be habitual rhythms. In any case, beliefs and perceptions with very deep roots are losing their grip as winds of change the magnitude of hurricanes are pushing them loose.

Dreams of possibility on the wings of imagination have taken flight. Your challenge now is to make them lucid. This means clarity and close attention to details. The finishing touches often take the most time. Yet you also want to feel centered in your core, flexible and strong. A driving urge to get a firm grip will require initiative and some instruction.

A big activation of your sense of values and priorities has begun. You are very much in a foundation building period. Conversely, it may feel as though you are on the mountain scaling steep slopes. Many new perceptions are consequently stirring and you have already begun to take action upon them. Expect more of the same, much more….

You are in the mood to assert yourself. Many new initiatives are already underway. Breaking through inner and outer resistance is essential for success. Yet, you are also wise to proceed steadily and consistently, as though setting the momentum for a long run. Your confidence levels are on the rise so advance accordingly to give them an added boost.

Accommodation up in Rossland for 2012

Rossland briefs

Revenue from accommodation sources hit an all time high in Rossland during 2012. Tourism Rossland announced that last year’s total accommodation revenue in Rossland, based on the Additional Hotel Room Tax, was $2,947,101, up from $1,914,703 in 2006 when they first began to track it. That represents a 54 per cent increase over seven years. Additionally, the 2012 numbers were more than $255,000 higher than the next closest year, which was 2008. Deanne Steven, executive director of Tourism Rossland, said things are looking good for this year as well. “With excellent snow conditions, great events, conferences and a growing awareness of Ross-

2013 RAM 1500 QUAD CAB SLT 4X4 land as a destination, Rossland is expecting an equally strong 2013,” Steven noted. Skiers have great results Rossland’s young cross-country skiers had great results at the Midget Championships on March 2 and 3. The championships, held in Revelstoke, are for youth between the ages of 9-12, and this year 181 kids spent a fun-filled weekend of racing at

the Mt. Macpherson XC Ski Trails. The West Kootenay skiers who finished in the top spots were Remi Drolet of Rossland, who took second, and Kolibri Drobish, sixth, in their individual classic races on Saturday. Sunday, Remi Drolet again placed second in the skating sprint competition for his age group. Skiers were recognized not only for their speed, but also their technique.
