New school sparks complaints Concerns include out-of-order toilets, water fountains Wanda chow

A Burnaby Central secondary student is so fed up with the new school building, which opened less than two years ago, that he’s started a petition to have the complaints discussed at a school board meeting. Grade 10 student Denny Pai wrote to the NewsLeader and to assistant superintendent and former

Central principal Roberto Bombelli about his concerns, and collected close to 100 signatures on a petition over a couple of days last week. Pai said he decided to take the action after being frustrated with long lineups at school washrooms and finding toilets, faucets and water fountains frequently out of order. His list of complaints include a lack of garbage cans in classrooms, air conditioning vents blowing cold air during the winter, drama and gym equipment being stored in

hallways, old science lab equipment that doesn’t work, overcrowded hallways and playing fields and a running track that is not yet ready for use. “I just don’t think it’s as nice as we thought it would be,” Pai said in a phone interview. The trouble is, Pai didn’t bring his concerns to school administrators or the student council first. Central principal Garth Errico first learned of it after the NewsLeader forwarded a copy of the letter to the school district

seeking comment. He’s since spoken to Pai about his concerns and explained the avenues available to raise them. He’s also spoken to about 10 students whose signatures were on the petition and was disturbed to hear some claim they didn’t know what they were signing. As for the complaints, Errico said they’re all part of the growing pains involved in a project as large as a new school. please see GeNerally, a4

The proposed redevelopment of Burnaby’s Value Village won’t include a childcare centre after all. In a preliminary proposal presented to city hall last year to start off the rezoning process, the property’s owner, Cressey Developments, said it is looking at building a mixed-use multifamily residential and commercial project on the three-acre site at the corner of Kingsway and Edmonds Street. Cressey plans to use the city’s density bonus provisions which city hall estimates would yield about $14 million as a community benefit if the rezoning goes ahead. Last month, in a report to council, city staff recommended $5 million of that be used to build and furnish a group childcare centre on the site large enough to accommodate 70 children, citing a “significant need” in the community for childcare spaces. please see city, a3

Father walks for Down Syndrome Mario Bartel

photo@burnabynewsleader.com

Rebecca English is almost six years old. She’s never been invited to a birthday party. It’s not that she lacks friends or playmates, explains her father Howie. Rebecca has Down Syndrome, and that scares some of their parents. So to help overcome some of those fears and raise awareness about Down Syndrome, Howie is embarking on his second Sky Walk, from his home in Maple Ridge to the Down Syndrome Research Foundation in North Burnaby, on March 23. The 21-mile trek is fitting as Trisomy 21 is the technical term for the genetic anomaly of an extra 21st chromosome that results in physical and developmental challenges. English says when doctors at the hospital informed him and his wife of their daughter’s Down Syndrome and some medical

issues that could limit her life expectancy, he was initially overwhelmed. But after catching his breath, he was ready to tackle the challenges that lay before his family. “I realized what a special child I have,” says English, who owns Kaplan’s Deli in Vancouver. “They’re your life, you’d do anything for them.” One of those things was connecting with DSRF, who were able to map out a plan for Rebecca, hook her up with medical and community resources. “You’re not alone,” says English. “My eyes welled up with the understanding of what we needed to do for our daughter, the great things we can achieve with her.” Now a vivacious little girl, Rebecca attends elementary school with her two siblings. But getting to that point hasn’t always been easy, says English.

Howie English holds his daughter Rebecca, 5, who has Down Syndrome, while her sisters Rachel, 9, left, and Renee, 12, read a story. English is walking 21 miles from his home in Maple Ridge to the Down Syndrome Research Foundation in North Burnaby to raise money and awareness for the genetic anomaly.

Support hasn’t always been available, resources are sometimes limited by budget constraints. “You find out about all the inadequacies in our system,” says English. “People want to help, but there’s not enough money.” That’s how he got the idea for

his Sky Walk. Last year he trekked 167 kilometres from Pitt Meadows to Whistler. It took him 31 hours, but he was able to raise thousands of dollars for the DSRF and the Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society.

“It was the most painful thing I’ve ever done,” says English of that effort. This year’s walk is a little more modest, but no less arduous. To prepare, English has been bookending his 14-hour days at his restaurant with hourlong walks around a track in Coquitlam in all kinds of weather. English says his goal is to raise $10,000 for the DSRF. But more importantly, he wants to send a message of solidarity with other families facing the challenges of bringing up a child with Down Syndrome as well raise awareness in the community. “Awareness is everything,” says English. • The Sky Walk will conclude at the Down Syndrome Research Foundation, 1409 Sperling Ave., with a finish-line celebration at 12:30 p.m. March 23, followed by a community barbecue. At the time, council referred the issue back to the community development committee for discussion. On Monday, it followed the committee’s recommendation and decided to simply take the cash. Coun. Colleen Jordan, chair of the community development committee, said at Monday’s meeting that $5 million is a lot of money to be used to create 70 childcare spaces. Burnaby city hall owns five childcare centres in the city, three of which were built with community benefit funds, said Jordan. The last one built with such funds was in 2005, which cost roughly $2 million. With the potential influx of money from the Value

Village redevelopment, the committee decided instead to first determine what the priorities are for the Edmonds community. “We are of the view that now with several big projects in the offing in that area we should take a step back and look at what all the potential is and look at what all the potential funds there are, and what all the needs are in that area and then make a priority list that would better serve the community as a whole,” Jordan said. If the development is granted rezoning, the cash contribution would add $11.2 million to the Edmonds Town Centre community benefit account earmarked for future community amenities in the area.

work was completed, Errico said. The occasional plugged toilet or water fountain that doesn’t work are “isolated incidents,” he said, noting the fountains, designed to fill personal water bottles are popular with students. The building actually doesn’t have air conditioning but rather a geothermal heating and cooling system that administrators were told would take about a couple years to adjust to their preferences, he said. The cold air being blown into classrooms is actually fresh air from outside, and the system is continually being monitored and tweaked. Garbage cans are located in hallways along with recycling bins to encourage recycling, instead of students throwing everything into the

trash. The move has resulted in a significant reduction in the garbage being sent to the landfill, Errico said. He agreed equipment is being stored in hallways but only while the school sorts through it all and awaits proper shelving and storage hardware to be installed in designated storage areas. Pai’s complaint about overcrowded hallways is related to his difficulty in getting to his lower-level locker. The old Central didn’t have enough lockers, forcing its 1,300 students to share, Errico said. The new Central tries to solve that by providing halfsize lockers, stacked on top of each other, to each student, making the issue likely more one of students not being respectful of others. TVs and video

monitors that Pai considers a waste of money are there to display announcements to students and the touch-screen near the front entrance is actually a requirement of the school’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold status, to provide information on the school’s energy use and sustainability. And unlike a brand new school, a replacement school such as Central’s doesn’t generally come with brand new equipment for science labs, Errico noted. With old equipment brought over from the old building, it’s not unusual to have some pieces that don’t work. “Generally, students believe it’s a fantastic building,” he said, noting he plans to talk to those who signed the petition to discuss their concerns. Grade 12 student Alesia Dicicco, a co-prime minister on student council, said she’s occasionally heard some students’ complaints but understood the situation better after talking with school administrators. The washroom issues also existed at the old school, Dicicco noted, saying it’s likely more an issue of the volume of students using them. Anytime there’s 700 girls using three washrooms “you’re going to have issues.”

ADRIAN RAESIDE:

QUESTION OF THE WEEK:

No more apologies Former B.C. Premier and ex-MP Ujjal Dosanjh doesn’t think the current provincial government should apologize for the federal head tax charged to Chinese immigrants from 1885 to 1923. Not because B.C. shouldn’t be sorry, just that politicians need to stop playing games. Official apologies are wrong, he believes now. They strengthen the urge for identity politics – us versus them. They encourage pandering by politicians. They don’t help, tearing societies apart rather than bringing them closer together. Mr. Dosanjh, as an NDP MLA in the 1990s, campaigned for the federal government to apologize for the Chinese head tax. Then as a Liberal MP and cabinet minister in 2006, he helped then-prime minster Paul Martin make a historic apology. But Mr. Dosanjh claims to have evolved since, and now opposes such apologies. Premier Christy Clark has put off a decision on an official apology after a document was leaked, outlining a Liberal strategy to target ethnic voters in the May 14 election. Mr. Dosanjh says all political parties do so, that the Liberal memo was no big deal. The mistake the Liberals made, he added, was mixing government money with partisan purposes. The provincial NDP is being accused of doing the same, taking more than $200,000 from constituency office budgets to pay for partisan activities conducted by MLAs. Given such shenanigans, what good would another apology do? What would it mean other than politicians are willing to say anything to get elected? In the end, all that’s been accomplished is an erosion of trust. —Black Press

No easy solution for child care Last month, while on her post-budget press tour, Premier Christy Clark announced a $76-million child-care funding plan that the BC Liberals plan to roll out over the next three years, should they win this spring’s provincial election. The funding would include $32 million to create new child-care spaces, $37 million to improve the quality of early years services and $7 million to strengthen and co-ordinate early childhood development programs. Critics say the Liberals’ plan will barely scratch the surface of fixing the issue of unaffordable child care in this province. With the critique comes the renewed call for universal child care for a flat fee of $10 per day, similar to Quebec’s much-revered child-care program. Clark’s announcement was the kind of pre-election-season promise we’ve heard a time or two before in this province, and one that, frankly, a few years ago I would have pretty much completely ignored. But a lot has changed for me in the past few years – namely, my husband and I became parents

Melissa Smalley and, more recently, one of thousands of B.C. families that rely on using child-care services so we can both work. We were fortunate enough to find a full-time spot for our daughter, who was not quite a year old when she started at day care. In many communities, spots for young infants in licensed facilities require a lengthy wait. In the prenatal class my husband and I took before our daughter’s birth, there were several parents who already had their unborn children on day-care waiting lists. It’s been two months since my return to work, and I’m willing to admit I have a love-hate relationship with our day-care arrangement. I love that we were able to find a day-care program that places a strong emphasis on learning, with Early Childhood Education-

trained caregivers. I hate that it sits at the expensive end of the price scale, and that we are paying more for child care than we do for rent. I love that our daughter’s caregivers light up with genuine adoration when they see her, and that she feels comfortable, secure and happy in their care. I hate that, at least once a day, my mommy instincts kick me in the gut with a pang of guilt for leaving my daughter eight hours a day, five days a week. I love that she comes home from ‘school’ each week with something new to proudly share with us – a new facial expression, hand gesture, dance or ‘word.’ I hate that she comes home each week with a new virus, which she also shares with us. Not a day goes by that I don’t second-guess our decision for me to return to work. I’m extremely proud of my career and the work I do – I’m even quite fond of the people I work with – but returning to work and placing our child in day care has been an extremely difficult, expensive and stressful transition.

Would a $10-a-day government-subsidized program solve all of our child-care woes? No, not really. But it would ease some of the financial burden we are facing and perhaps allow us to explore some alternatives. As would the option of taking extended parental leave or working flexible or part-time hours upon returning to the workforce, which are other valid ideas that should be included in the discussion of this critical topic. Making the decision to place a child of any age into someone else’s care is never easy – and neither is making the decision to leave a career you enjoy and have worked hard to establish. Parenting comes with enough stress as it is. While there’s no quick fix for B.C.’s child-care quandary, long-term solutions that address affordability and accessibility for all families would be a tremendous help in making child-care decisions a little less stressful. Hello! My name is James. I am 17 years old and in grade 11. I have been delivering the Burnaby NewsLeader for six years. I began my newspaper delivery route because my mom thought it would get me outside and off my ipod at least twice a week. She was right! Although I do not like pausing my Angry Birds and Temple Run games, it is probably a good thing that I go outside once in a while. Thanks to the NewsLeader for nominating me as “Carrier of the Week”.

When you live next to a professional horticulturalist, gardening isn’t just a pastime, it’s bloodsport. Well, it’s at least a friendly rivalry, says Bill Woodson, who shares a fence and front yard with Claude LeDoux, New Westminster’s horticulture manager. But he’s not afraid to point out that even in March, his artichoke plant is already looking more impressive than the one in his neighbour’s front garden. “Mine is definitely bigger than his,” says Woodson. “I always have an eye on what Claude is doing. We trade information.” So when LeDoux approached Woodson about four years ago about setting aside some of his garden’s bounty to donate to the Food Bank through the Plant a Row Grow a Row program, he was only too happy to help out. The program is an initiative by gardeners in New Westminster and Burnaby to contribute fresh vegetables

and fruit to those who might not otherwise be able to afford them. A special garden party at St. Thomas More secondary school on Thursday launched this year’s growing season. Gardeners and prospective gardeners were able to get tips for planting from experts like Brian Minter as well as June Hewko from Lee Valley Tools and Mike Lascelle, who gave a tour of edible flowers and leaves. Donating a portion of his harvest is a neighbourly way of addressing the age-old problem faced by gardeners who inevitably end up with more than their family and friends could possibly eat, says Woodson. It’s also a way to share his love for fresh, healthy, locally-grown produce. “Food shouldn’t be elitist,” says Woodson, who contributed almost 50 pounds of squash last season, as well beets, cucumbers, beans, tomatoes, onions and salad greens. “Everyone should be able to eat locally.” It’s also educational, says LeDoux, who’s in charge of

the local Plant a Row Grow a Row program, now in its 14th season. “People don’t realize you put the seed in the ground and food emerges. They’re learning to acknowledge where food comes from and the difference in how things taste when they’re fresh.” The recent run of rainy, cool weather hasn’t dampened anyone’s enthusiasm to get their hands dirty, says LeDoux. Already delicate greens are sprouting and spreading under a special shelter Woodson’s erected in his front garden. Thin green shoots of garlic rise above the spongy soil, cabbage leaves are fanning out. “You really look forward to when the earth warms up and it dries out,” says Woodson. “When you’re in the middle of the garden with its smells and the insects, it creates its own world.” Then he casts a glance to the garden next door and picks up a spade. It’s game time. • To find out more about Plant a Row Grow a Row, go to www. growarow.org

There’s more to do on St. Patrick’s Day than just drink green beer. Charlie’s Chocolate Factory in Burnaby has a whole selection of Irish-themed treats for those who want to indulge their sweet tooth between bites of boxy, a traditional Irish potato pancake. The shop is at 3756 Canada Way. If you’re too young to exercise your drinking elbow at the pub, the Burnaby Public Library has a special selection of 26 green-themed titles for teens on St. Patrick’s Day. Some of the books include Green Lantern, Why Is Snot Green and Green is the New Black. For those teetotalers shunning demon ale on the holiday, there will be a Serendipity Tea Party in New Westminster, from 2 to 4:30 p.m. The event is a networking opportunity for female entrepreneurs. For more information go to www.eventbrite.com/ event/5626412752. There are also events for revelers who’d rather be active than hungover. A special St. Patrick’s Day skate will be held at Copeland Arena on March 17, from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Kids can get their faces painted and participate in special craft and game activities on and off the ice. The trails that circumnavigate nearby Burnaby Lake will be the venue for the Green Sock Half Shamrock ‘n’ Race with relay, five-kilometre, seven-mile and halfmarathon distances to test your fitness and prolong your sobriety. All events start at 9 a.m. Participants will be awarded a pair of green souvenir socks and a special finishing medal and then treated to a pancake breakfast. So, who was this St. Patrick fellow? Saint Patrick was a bishop who traveled around Ireland for nearly 30 years using the shamrock to help him explain the Catholic doctrine of the Holy Trinity. So he might be a little shocked at all the drinking and carousing that goes on in his name every March 17. Especially as this year St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Sunday. Patrick’s father and grandfather were deacons in the Catholic church. When he was 16, he was kidnapped by Irish raiders who enslaved him. Eventually he was able to escape to the coast, and then on to Britain where he studied to become a priest. Upon returning to Ireland in 432, Patrick became a champion of Irish Christianity, teaching and preaching around the country until his death on March 17, 461. Rebels roll into B.C. hoop quarters The Burnaby South Rebels have reached the quarter-finals of the B.C. AAA senior boys high school basketball championship. The Rebels defeated Chilliwack’s Sardis Falcons 73-69 Wednesday morning in their first round match at the Langley Events Centre. South controlled most of the game and had a 14-point lead late in the third quarter. But Sardis kept plugging away and reduced the deficit down to three with four minutes remaining in the game. The Rebels’ lead was even down to two, 71-69, with 21 seconds left but Burnaby South managed to sink a couple of free throws to secure the victory. The win put the Rebels into a quarter-final matchup Thursday (8:15 p.m.) against either the province’s top-ranked team, the Walnut Grove Gators from Langley, or the No. 7 Churchill Bulldogs of Vancouver, who played each other in a first-round matchup later Wednesday.

Five-foot-six Guard Gino Pabilao was named player of the game, scoring 15 points and racking up seven assists and six turnovers. Martin Bogajev was the team’s top scorer with 17 points. South’s scoring was spread around with six-foot-four forward Djordje Obradovic getting 14 points and Nick Garcha contributing 13. • The Burnaby Mountain Lions’ first venture to the tourney was a memorable one, but for the wrong reason. In their opening round game Tuesday, the Lions were defeated 59-50 by the Caledonia Kermodes from Terrace. It was the first time Burnaby Mountain had made it to the tournament since the school opened 13 years ago. Atdhe Hajrizi was Mountain’s top scorer with 21 points. He also collected 13 rebounds. The loss relegated the Lions to the consolation side where they were to face the Pitt Meadows Marauders on Wednesday afternoon.

BLRC beats up on Old Boys

Gino Pagbilao puts up a three-point shot over top of Scott Fitzsimmons of the Sardis Falcons in the opening round of the B.C. AAA senior boys high school basketball championships in Langley on Wednesday morning. Pagbilao was named player of the game as South won 73-69 to advance to Thursday’s quarter-finals.

A strong second half propelled Burnaby Lake Rugby Club to a 35-13 victory over the UBC Old Boy Ravens as Rugby BC premier league kicked off the second half of its season Saturday. A close 10-6 game was blown wide open in the second stanza when Burnaby racked up three tries and 25 unanswered points. Burnaby Central grad Admir Cejvanovic scored two of BLRC’s second-half tries while Mike Gough had another. Guiseppe Laudisio crossed the goal line in the first half while James Reekie kicked three penalties and three converts. With the win, Burnaby moved into fourth place with a 5-3 record. They will play in Victoria against UVic Saturday. “We are really starting to roll and after losing some really close games against teams like James Bay and UVic , we are proving to be a second half team,” said Cejvanovic. “It’s important to be able to play out the full 80 minutes and we did that [Saturday] creating scoring chances and finding the spaces.” Burnaby also beat the Old Boys 65-0 in first division play last Saturday.

Panther Constructors hopes Vancouver will follow Abbotsford’s lead

Finding affordable living in the Lower Mainland Affordable housing has been in the news a lot lately, and developers are looking to appeal to buyers who may not be able to afford as much in an expensive real estate market. Brian Roche, president of Panther Constructors, is hoping that Vancouver will take a page out of Abbotsford’s book and implement a rezoning plan that will allow developers in Chinatown to offer more affordable homes to buyers in an area that is rapidly becoming popular. “Abbotsford took a piece of property and rezoned it to make it more affordable,” Roche says. “They offered it to developers to buy, and built

affordable housing.” This prevented buyers from leaving the area and moving to less-expensive communities, such as Mission. Roche says this is something that he is hoping to see in Vancouver as well. Panther is looking for the city to find ways to either reduce prices on the land in the area or cap the current price. Since Panther purchased the land for The Flats on Georgia, their condo development in Chinatown, other developers have taken notice and begun working on their own projects. “Chinatown has become a hotbed,” says Roche. “Prices have gone up quite substantially.”

Modern Georgian style

Coquitlam welcomes Emerson to the neighbourhood By Kerry Vital

Georgian architecture with modern interiors is arriving in West Coquitlam with MOSAIC’s EMERSON, already under construction on Como Lake Avenue near North Road. “EMERSON will be a block from the coming Evergreen Line,” says MOSAIC’s Geoff Duyker. “In the near future, this whole area will look totally different. The halo of the Evergreen Line combined with some exciting mixed-used projects will bring new high-street retail and breathe vibrant life into everything.” While the convenient transit orientation of Evergreen Heights has huge appeal to shoppers, the neighbourhood has other amenities to offer. “EMERSON is close to Simon Fraser University’s Burnaby Mountain campus,” says Duyker. “This has brought both first-time buyers and parents investing for their children.” Shops and restaurants are minutes away in either direction at Lougheed Town Centre, Newport Village or Little Korea on North Road. Plus, you’ll also find the big box convenience of United Boulevard a few minutes away. Recreation and leisure activities are available at the parks in the area, as well as fishing at Como Lake, golfing at the Vancouver Golf Club or a workout at Steve Nash Fitness World – all nearby. EMERSON will hold 63 apartment

residences in a variety of one- and twobedroom floorplans ranging from 589 to over 700 square feet. “Already 70 per cent sold, homebuyers are recognizing EMERSON’s phenomenal value relative to other options on the market,” says Duyker. Inspired by Georgian architecture, EMERSON will have plenty of red brick and black metal work, mullioned windows and layers of landscaping. Buyers with a green thumb will find plots for herbs and vegetables, but you don’t need to be a nature lover to enjoy the garden greenscape with trellises and benches perfect for a picnic. Inside, the nine-foot ceilings (10 feet on the penthouse level) heighten the sense of space to the home, complemented by large windows that let the light pour in, whatever the weather. The main living areas feature laminate wood flooring throughout, with an elegant tile threshold with granite inset in the entry – a MOSAIC

signature. The beauty continues in the kitchen, with its polished composite quartz countertop and two-tone flat-panel cabinetry. The stainless-steel appliances and glass tile backsplash are lit by under-cabinet task lighting, while the open shelving and under-cabinet spice ledge, all designed by MOSAIC, are masterstrokes of convenience and contemporary style. Moving into the bathrooms, you will find porcelain tile flooring and polished composite quartz countertops, complemented by the polished chrome

and white glass pendant light fixtures. The deep soaker tub is perfect for a soak, while the wood-framed niche with inset glass shelves beside the vanity in the ensuite is a special touch that demonstrates the design-driven details in a MOSAIC home. “MOSAIC is passionate about great design,” says Duyker. “We build better homes.” Homes at EMERSON start in the low $200,000s. For more information, visit mosaichomes.com/emerson, call 604936-9300 or check out the Home Store and model home at 608 Como Lake Avenue, West Coquitlam.

A link between hearing loss and dementia? ADVERTISEMENT

R

esearchers have found a close relationship between losing your hearing and memory loss. The study was carried out at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore. 693 men and women aged between 36-90 years were studied. All participants underwent initial hearing and cognitive testing at the outset of the study between 1990 and 1994; none of the participants had dementia at that point. These participants were then followed for the development of Alzheimer's disease and dementia through to 2008 - an average of 12 years. The study revealed that the risk of dementia increased among participants with at least a mild 25-decibel reduced hearing ability. Participants with more severe hearing loss were most likely to be diagnosed with dementia – and even Alzheimer's. The relationship between Alzheimer's and hearing loss should come as no surprise - After all, how can you remember what someone said if you didn't hear them say it. Several symptoms are common to both Alzheimer's and untreated hearing loss. These symptoms include depression, anxiety, feelings of isolation and problems with talking and understanding what is being said. In addition, people with either Alzheimer's or unidentified hearing loss may have inappropriate responses to social cues, lower scores on tests of mental function, attitudes of denial, defensiveness, or negativity, and increased distrust of others' motives, even those of family and friends. Research has shown that hearing loss damages interpersonal and family relationships and may lead to emotional instability, low self-esteem and even depression. Untreated hearing loss not only reduces one's quality of life, but it can also result in the brain losing its capacity to recognize everyday sounds. Therefore, it is imperative that a hearing loss is dealt with as quickly as possible and using the most appropriate and up to date technology available will significantly ease everyday communication.
