Anglicans mull new direction on marriages Traditional weddings could be removed from church offerings, pending a national decision Daniel Palmer News staff
The outgoing bishop of the Anglican Diocese of B.C. hopes a recently adopted decision to allow same-gender blessings will become the norm for all marrying couples in the church. Bishop James Cowan supports ending a centurieslong tradition of legal marriages in the Anglican church and hopes its national decision-making body embraces the “European model” of performing only religious consecration ceremonies. “If marriage is something that the state wants to keep an eye on, then let state officers do it,” he said. “Why should the clergy be instruments of the state, and (do it) for free?” Currently, Anglican parishes in B.C. are able to conduct both civil and religious blessing ceremonies for heterosexual couples, while local parish members can choose whether or not their church can perform samesex blessings. On March 3, Victoria’s Christ Church Cathedral approved the decision to include same-gender blessings with the support of Rev. Logan McMenamie, dean of the parish. “There might be a time for the church to bless all marriages. ... It really depends if the clergy are willing to move in that direction,” McMenamie said. The possibility of ending church-administered civil marriage was broached in 2010 at the Anglican Church of Canada’s national conference, known as general synod, Cowan said. Errant driver leaves rec centre in dark Damaged power box shuts Esquimalt Rec Spring break camps and beforeand after-school care programs were relocated from Esquimalt Recreation Centre on Tuesday due to transformer damage that severed power to the entire facility. The damaged box, located outside the building off Fraser Street, had been struck by a vehicle between 5:30 and 6
a.m. Sunday. The damage didn’t immediately affect the power supply, said Jeff Byron, Esquimalt’s manager of recreation services. He said a fire started in the box around 7:45 a.m. when three fuses blew, cutting off all power to the centre. Workers got the system up and running again about 4:30 p.m. after spending all day on it, but the system failed again early Tuesday, leaving recreation staff to set up shop at the nearby Archie Browning Sports Centre.
A temporary generator installed later Tuesday was expected to produce about 60 per cent of the building’s necessary power, Byron said. The pool remained closed as of Wednesday. ICBC and the municipality’s insurance company will cover the cost of the repairs, Byron added. Pool users are asked to visit esquimalt.ca for updates, or visit Esquimalt Recreation on Facebook. editor@vicnews.com

Christ Church Cathedral has hosted many weddings over the generations.
Area church leaders split on blessings-only idea Continued from Page A1
Clergy and other church members gather every three years to discuss major ministry decisions, including marriage policies. At the 2010 conference, clergy and canon lawyers weren’t able to come to a consensus on the definition of a “European model” of marriage, so no progress was made. Carol Throp volunteers as a steward at Christ Church Cathedral and was raised and married in the Anglican tradition. She also supports the idea of offering blessings only to all couples. “Married couples would be coming to the church to celebrate and affirm their union in the presence of God,” she said. “My children, who are in their 30s, don’t think twice about equal gay rights (in society). If blessings are acceptable for gay couples, why can’t we all do that?” Throp acknowledged, however, that many fellow churchgoers want traditional marriage ceremonies to remain a part of the church’s offerings. Anglican church leaders on southern Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands seem split in their opinion of the move, Cowan said, but he remains hopeful. “I was actually surprised with the (positive) response.” The next Anglican general synod takes place in Ottawa, July 3 to 7. dpalmer@vicnews.com

Housing money delivered Advocacy group to find housing for an additional 120 individuals Daniel Palmer News staff
The Greater Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness received much-needed funding this week with a $400,000 grant from B.C. Housing for one of its successful pilot projects. The Streets to Homes program has already provided housing for 130 people in the Capital Region over the past two years, using a unique delivery of services through a $300 housing subsidy, community support workers and willing landlords with private-market buildings. Provincial funds will cover 103 spaces, while another 17 spots will be funded by the Coalition, United Way, the City of Victoria and the Victoria Foundation. “It’s going to take a lot of different tools to end homelessness, so this program won’t work for everybody, but it’s really effective for the people it’s intended for,” said Andrew Wynn-Williams, Coalition executive director. The province likes the program because it costs about $7,000 per participant each year,

less than half the cost of purpose-built supportive housing. Streets to Homes uses a “housing-first” approach, then works with each person to create an action plan to overcome addiction, treat mental health issues or undergo employment training. Nearly threequarters of participants remain in the program after one year, said Brad Crewson, who oversees the project through Pacifica Housing. “The program only works if we can provide people with some stability,” he said. “All of the psychological benefits from feeling safe and secure, and being able to address other issues in your life, that really isn’t happening when all you’re thinking is what you’re going to do for housing in two, four, six months.” Crewson hopes to see Streets to Homes expand to provide support for families as well. He said the key to success is collaborative work with each non-profit service provider in the Capital Region. “That’s the piece we take a lot of pride in. The beauty of the
Coalition is we are really making a concerted effort in maximizing these (funding) dollars and focusing our resources.” Wynn-Williams said there is still much more work to be done to “break the back” of the challenge of homelessness.
“… this program won’t work for everybody, but it’s really effective for the people it’s intended for.”

Admirals Road gets federal funding Bike lanes, pedestrian and streetlight upgrades planned Daniel Palmer News staff
Esquimalt is getting a $2.8million boost from the federal government’s gas tax fund to improve Admirals Road. The Township will soon be seeking resident input on the design for the upgrades. The funding, announced last week, will pay for work taking place between Maplebank Road
and Lyall Street. It includes the addition of bike lanes, a two-way left turn lane, median islands plus street lighting and sidewalk upgrades. Township crews will also use the opportunity to install separate manhole access to stormwater and sewage systems. “Admirals Road is a regional commuter route used by the Canadian Forces base personnel, shipyard employees and
flow-through traffic in both directions, Mayor Barb Desjardins said. She added the funding will cover 100 per cent of the necessary upgrades. The federal gas tax fund allots $2 billion annually to municipal infrastructure projects across Canada. OUR VIEW
Eroding pillars of the church Last week, parishioners at the Anglican Christ Church Cathedral voted to allow the blessing of same-sex marriages, an unusually progressive move for a mainstream faith. The Anglican Church, and this congregation in particular, understand the value of embracing people equally, and to a certain degree, rejecting arbitrary and antiquated doctrines that install bigotry as part of faith. Whether this will help or further erode support for the Anglican Church in the Capital Region remains to be seen. In past years, the Victoria diocese has struggled to keep an audience. In January 2010 Anglican Diocese of B.C. announced it would close 19 of its churches in Greater Victoria largely due to declining membership, And notably in 2008, Anglican parishioners in Metchosin kicked up an angry fuss – and eventually separated from the church – when the Anglican Church of Canada started sending signals that it would bless same-sex unions, as indeed it does now. Allowing same-sex blessings – which is strictly symbolic, as opposed to a legal church wedding ceremony – cracks open the door for progressive equality within the church. But James Cowan, the outgoing bishop of the Anglican Diocese of B.C., says the church should get out of the marriage business altogether and leave all legal aspects of marriage in the hands of the state. This is all fine and well, but Anglicans need to tread carefully about the messaging behind ditching legal marriage ceremonies. Marrying and burying, so to speak, are two traditional tenets of churches the world over. Even more than that, bailing on legal marriage ceremonies, especially around the same time as adopting same-sex blessings, could open the door to bigotry and accusations that same-sex rights led to the downfall of marriage in church. Allowing church blessings for all people is the right thing to do, but the Anglican Church needs to be mindful of unintended consequences of trying to level the playing field for marriage ceremonies. Aid and mining; now’s our chance to make a difference The world was recently shocked by the news of South African police gunning down protesting mine workers. But the untold story is more insidious and far more lethal.
South Africa’s mining industry is a hotbed of tuberculosis infection, due to crowded and unhealthy working conditions. One third of all new South African TB cases arises in the mines, adding three-quarters of a million sufferers each year. It is estimated that every infected mine worker spreads the disease to 15 other people. Although TB cost only $20 per person to treat, infection is often a death sentence for these people and their families. Canada has long been a leader in battling TB by working with The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria, which has treated almost 10 million cases of TB. March 24 is world TB day, and this year the Global Fund is set for replenishment. The federal government’s new direction in aid is to link it to mining development. Here’s a chance for them to show true leadership in this regard and help South Africa’s mining industry rid itself of

LETTERS There is no need to shed tears for any Member of the Legislative Assembly who might lose their job in the upcoming provincial election. Why, you ask? Well, defeated honourable members will soon shed their own tears when they realize they will soon return to the real world, where they may no longer be able to enjoy the many outrageous benefits they have grown accustomed to as legislators. They will no longer receive a generous salary, access to expense accounts so protected that even the auditor general cannot scrutinize them properly, limited attendance in the legislature – only when the house is in session – and of course, an unheard of goldplated pension if they have served six years or more. One former cabinet minister who announced he would not run in the next election, as he wanted to spend more time with his family, will receive approximately $89,000 per

Nature becomes the classroom

Q ARNOLD LIM, NEWS STAFF
The sun is gone on a chilly Victoria afternoon, but Eli Thuot doesn’t seem to notice. The six-year-old nature kindergarten student is moments into a visit to Esquimalt Lagoon and he is already knee-deep in twigs and driftwood, and building a den for himself along the beach. One particular branch, he said, is from an arbutus tree. “He’s coming home with facts I would never have learned, he knows the subtle qualities of tree types,” said mother Dory Thuot laughing. “It is fascinating
watching a kid at that age picking up all that information.” Six months into a two-year pilot project and based out of Sangster elementary in Colwood, Eli is responding well to nature kindergarten, where students spend their mornings going to parks, going on walks or making their way into the Royal Roads University forest rain or shine. The educators, of which there are two instead of one, include an early childhood educator joining the traditional kindergarten teacher to guide
the students along their trips with Æexible lesson plans built to reÆect how the children respond and interact with the environment on a given day. Already into the back half of the year, Dory sees opportunities for the program to spread beyond kindergarten into the elementary school, based on the lessons her son brings home on a daily basis. She said Eli is sharing elements of stewardship and respect for the environment at an early age that many students don’t acquire until much later

Parenting and attachments
Surviving Purrla The parenting books said it was Åne – all good in fact – for children to attach themselves to toys, blankets or any other transitional objects. Q SUSAN LUNDY Apparently, 70 per FEATURE WRITER cent of children develop these strong attachments, but the literature doesn’t offer much advice on replacing these items should something horriÅc happen. So when my oldest daughter, Danica, glued herself to a stuffed kitten called Purrla, my mother anxiety moved beyond ensuring the safety of my kids to constant consideration of the whereabouts and good health of a stuffed cat. Cozily tucked under an arm, the purring (rattling) Purrla travelled everywhere with Danica, starting from the moment it appeared under the Christmas tree in her kindergarten year. Soccer with a stuffy? No problem. Purrla clung to an armpit. School theatre with a stufÅe? No problem. Purrla dressed in a miniature version of Danica’s costume and went on stage too. “She is not stuffed,” Danica claimed. “She is Ålled with my love.” More than once in the darkness of night, a blood-freezing scream from Danica’s room pierced my peaceful slumber and sent me stumbling to her side. “Purrla,” Danica would groggily groan.
victoria
I’d pluck Purrla from the Æoor, deposit her back in the bed, and take several deep breaths to calm my hammering heart. I suffered reoccurring nightmares centred on issues of loss – speciÅcally – the loss of Purrla. What if she FELL OVERBOARD ON A FERRY? What if she TUMBLED INTO AN OUTHOUSE? The terror of it could grip me at any time – like the day an American tourist strolled by. “My daughter used to have one of those,” he drawled, pointing at Purrla. (At which point Danica tucked her pet into her shirt and deliberately turned her back). “Called her Yellow Dog. Got so there was only one ear left. Carried that ear everywhere.” He added ominously, “Better get yourself another one. Just in case.” His family life was apparently saved by the friend of a friend of a friend who just happened to Ånd an exact Yellow Dog replica “in North Carolina of all places.” Dear God, I’d ordered Purrla from a timelimited, only-available-here offer at least a year earlier. I wasn’t the only one suffering Purrla nightmares. Danica’s kindergarten teacher experienced a few of her own. Purrla became a member of her class, having her own turn whacking the piñata, and inspiring a full-school hunt on the day she was misplaced and eventually found “hiding” under a table.
“Just like kittens will do,” said a relieved Danica. Fellow kindergartners fell into a horriÅed hush when, as another child held Purrla, one of her whiskers got caught, pulling from one side of her face to the other. Danica gave a hysterical, my-baby-isfatally-wounded scream and a grim silence fell over the classroom. The teacher dug out a needle and managed to Åx the offending whisker. It was tense, she conÅded later, still a little pale from the experience. Purrla stuck like glue to Danica’s underarm for the next 18 months. She became ratty, with balled up fur – but her attachment was unyielding. And because Purrla became an appendage, Danica never lost her. She was just always there, tucked under her arm. Then, on the Årst day of Grade 2, Danica looked mournfully at her bedraggled pet and decided in the best interest of Purrla’s health, the kitty should stay home and rest on her pillow. She continued to sleep with her pet (rattle, rattle all night long) and did not start leaving her behind when we travelled until Åve years later. Slowly my fear of loss subsided, but even these days, before Danica arrives home from university, I scoot up to her room, breathing though a little tremble of fear, to make sure Purrla is still there, waiting on Danica’s pillow. a similar program in Germany. She began working on the project in January 2011, developing and planning the program with a team alongside members of post-secondary early childhood experts at Royal Roads University and the University of Victoria. While it is still early, other municipalities in Greater Victoria could soon see similar programs in their backyards. “From what the parents have experienced this year, their expectations from the program have been exceeded and they are extremely happy with how their children are learning and progressing,” Krusekopf said. “The students have a great sense of community and team when they are out together. They demonstrate empathy towards one another in a way that is noticeable.” She said other beneÅts include more independence, resilience to the weather, increased Åtness and even weight loss. Negatives have been few, but the biggest problem was Ånding a washroom for the kids while they were out and about on the Royal Roads property. They have since secured a mobile porta-potty. “Children are becoming more independent. The other thing is the early childhood educator is mentioning the children have become comfortable with being uncomfortable,” Krusekopf said. “They also discuss the word perseverance. They understand that and they live that concept of perseverance.” Eli, who has experienced the learning Årst hand, said he enjoys the outdoor trips because he likes playing and learning outside. “I like nature because it is so beautiful and we get to play in it,” Eli said. “I love it.” For his mother Dory, that is all she needs to hear. “We live in an amazing part of the world,” she said. “Most of our schools are close enough or backing up onto parkland. The fact we are not taking advantage of that is a shame.” For more on nature kindergarten, see naturekindergarten. sd62.bc.ca. alim@vicnews.com O

We tend to do a lot of drawing – sitting around the kitchen table with tons of paper and colouring utensils. We like going for hikes at Mount Doug, Thetis Lake and Cattle Point. It’s funny how the kids might not want to go, but as soon as we get to the hiking spot, they are running and jumping around and having a blast. We also play games on the Wii together. Bowling, archery ... anything goes!

What is the part of your day you most look forward to? I love dinner time, because we are all hanging out together before someone has to take off to their next activity. But truth be told, nothing beats the time when the kids are asleep (or they are reading in bed on their own) and Lance and I get to flop on the couch and watch mindless TV together. American Idol anyone? If it’s not too serious a show, we can still chat about our day and just hang out and catch up. O

For centuries, artists have been capturing emotional, hard-fought moments in sport through beautifully hand-crafted paintings, sculptures and sketches. But Victoria-born painter Jayné Childs realized one sport – a favourite Canadian pastime – was noticeably absent from the artistic world. “I never got in to curling – it was cold; my body doesn’t like the cold. But it’s a really big sport, especially in this part of the country,” she says from her home in Maryfield, Sask. “Curling is such a community heartbeat.” Childs’ first foray into painting the sport was in February 2011 when curler Russ Howard came to her small Saskatchewan town. “I decided to see if I could draw anymore. I had done metal sculpture work, huge murals, marblings – all sorts of mediums, but I hadn’t done what I’d done as a kid in

Childs will be the artist in residence at the Fairmont Empress Hotel from March 23 to April 8, showcasing her curling portfolio in the hotel’s conservatory. While in Victoria, she plans to attend some of the draws to photograph more intimate moments in the sport, which she’ll then translate to canvas. She plans to have three or four paintings on the go, as she works at the Empress. “There’s nothing like being in the live rink and being able to get their personality, and the personality that I’m able to really paint in their champion character,” Childs said. Childs’ work will be on display daily from noon to 8 p.m. (excluding Easter Sunday). Limited edition collector prints will be available for purchase. Awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2008, Lang’s reflective musical setting is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s text. It tells the tragic story of a poor young girl, beaten by her father, who tries unsuccessfully to sell matches on the street, is ignored, and finally freezes to death. Lang’s setting of this original story incorporates influences from various sources, including Bach’s St. Matthew Passion. Vox Humana’s performance of this

Beacon Hill looks to repeat as National Little League turns 60 The boys of Beacon Hill Little League are looking to be back-to-back city champions this year as baseball season nears. Last year Beacon Hill made it to the provincial semifinals. Late registration is still open for boys and girls to play District 7 Little League baseball. National Little League (Cook Street and Hillside Avenue), the city’s oldest program, is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Visit littleleaguevictoria.org to register.
Greater Victoria recruiting youngsters for the gridiron The Greater Victoria Minor Football Association is recruiting boys and girls aged six to 13 years old for its spring season. Equipment is provided, which includes helmet, shoulder pads, kidney belt, pants, knee and thigh pads. Teams are located in Gordon Head, Saanich, Victoria, Westshore, Peninsula and Sooke. Player registration and gear-up is this weekend, Saturday (March 16) 10 to 11 a.m. at the Copley Park field house, 600 Parkridge St., off Vanalman Avenue. For more info visit victoriafootball.ca.
Vikes track down gold at CIS championships UVic Vikes 600-metre specialist Rachel Francois won her second CIS gold medallist in the event at the CIS national track championships in Edmonton last weekend. Over the course of the three-day meet the middle-distance focused Vikes earned two gold medals and two bronze. The Vikes women’s 4x800m team won gold. The same team then won its first CIS medal in the 4x400m, taking bronze, with Jenica Moore, Grace Annear, Kendra Pomfret and Francois at anchor in that race. Pomfret also medaled with third in the 1,000m. sports@vicnews.com
It’s not the ideal way to enter the playoffs. The Victoria Grizzlies haven’t won in six games, even if three of the past four losses did come in overtime. And as the puck drops at Bear Mountain Arena tonight (March 15) for Game 1 of the BCHL best-of-five playoff series versus the Powell River Kings, it will mark a month since the Grizzlies’ last win at home, Feb. 16 over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. But playoffs are a clean slate, a time to start over. “I know (the Kings) will be well prepared to make life miserable for their opponents,” said Grizzlies coach and general manager Bill Bestwick. The coach of the year winner anticipates a well-prepared Kings team under fellow coach of the year winner Kent Lewis, who won in 2009 and 2011. “(The Kings) will compete hard and I’m sure they’re not satisfied with their regular season. You can make amends of a season real quick in a five-game series.” The season hasn’t been the same for the Grizzlies since Gerry Fitzgerald went down for good in January, though the team hung on to finish atop the Island division But the Fitzgerald triplets, of which the Grizz were recently down to one, are back to two today as Leo returns to form a top line with brother Myles and David Mazurek. Myles Powell with skate with Mark McClellan and Pearce Eviston on the Grizzlies second line. Defenceman Jaden Schmeisser will return for Game 2 for a fifth fighting major of the season against Alberni on Saturday. Defenceman Blake Thompson can return for Game 3, as he is banned two games for a blow to the head against Alberni. Brady Rouleau will start in net for the Grizzlies. “Our goaltending has been challenged down the stretch. We’re leaning on Brady to get us our first win on Friday night and go from there,” Bestwick said. “In a best of five, obviously home ice advantage is critical and if you falter there’s no margin for error.”
Coach of the year The BCHL awards were released earlier this week naming Bill Bestwick the Coastal conference Coach of the Year and defenceman D.J. Jones to the Coastal All-Star team. It’s Bestwick’s third time winning the award, having won it with the Nanaimo Clippers in 2005 and 2008. The last Victoria coach to win it was Campbell Blair with the Grizzlies (Salsa) in 2000. Bestwick is heralded for turning a Griz-
zlies roster, stripped of its assets and with little in the way of prospects, into a BCHL contender. Key acquisitions captain Zach Urban from the Penticton Vees and the Fitzgerald triplets from the Prince George Spruce Kings led the turnaround. Bestwick last faced the Kings in the playoffs with the Clippers in 2008. The Clippers swept the best-of-seven series in four straight. The Grizzlies last faced the Kings in the second round of the 2011 playoffs. The Kings roared back from being down 3-1 in the series, rallying off a Game 5 overtime win.
Victoria trio leads Vees Wade Murphy, a former Victoria Grizzlies player from Saanich, was also named a BCHL all-star. Murphy plays for the Penticton Vees which finished first in the Interior division. He won the RBC Cup national championship with the Vees last year. This year he was overall in BCHL scoring with 23 goals and 47 assists for 70 points, but was second in points per game average. He missed games while playing for Canada at the World Junior A Challenge. The Vees’ goaltending duo of Chad Katunar and Nic Renyard, both from Victoria, will share the Wally Forslund Award as the Top Goaltending Tandem with the best combined goals-against average of 2.33 per game. sports@vicnews.com

Victorians getting ready for a fresh change The basement of the Hudson building, with its collection of concrete pillars helping hold up the floors of residential spaces above, appears more a construction site than a place to find fresh produce. In a few short months the Douglas Street space will be a literal beehive of activity – with real honey Don Descoteau farmers setting Biz Beat up shop here, along with a variety of other food producers. Members of the Victoria Downtown Public Market Society, including chair Philippe Lucas, have been plotting the creation of a permanent year-round facility for the past three years.
Lucas says the concept has been rattling around his head longer than that. “We’re getting so close here that I can taste it,” he said Tuesday, after the society announced it has 70 per cent of the vendor spots filled and a floor plan laid out. “For me, this has always been a beneficial social enterprise. I think the potential to marry the ‘eat local’ movement with the ‘shop local’ movement (creates a) unique proposition for positive social change.” The hope is the market will become a destination for visitors and locals alike, much like the public markets at Pike Place in Seattle and the Ferry Building in San Francisco. Established merchants Silk Road Tea, Wildfire Bakery and Salt Spring Island Cheese join a sweet and savoury pie seller, Mexican food kiosk, seafood
With fresh produce sellers and other merchants expected to fill up the day tables, the market holds plenty of promise, she added. “The way that it all came together was from the community supporting our successful summer and winter farmer’s markets. (That) shows that we’re missing that public market component for the city.” The plan is for the sevenday-a-week market to open up sometime in June. The society also hopes to host outdoor markets in the alley between the former department store and the construction site at the back of the property. Walk, run and roll to find a cure for MS By Jennifer Blyth Make every step count April 14 and join hundreds of others in the community to help find a cure for multiple sclerosis. The annual Scotiabank MS Walk kicks off at Willows Beach Park and takes participants along the Oak Bay waterfront, where more than 600 people are expected to walk, run and roll in this annual fundraiser in support of the MS Society’s South & Central Vancouver Island Chapter. Among those leading the way will be Andrew Kempton, owner of Mortgage Alliance Cutting Edge Lending and one of the Tiddleywinks Tip Toers team. Andrew joined the MS Walk several years ago when his sister-inlaw was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at age 22. “She is such an inspiration and that’s what prompted me to get my company involved as well,” Andrew says, noting that events like the annual walk help raise awareness of the disease while at the same time raising funds for invaluable research that brings Canada one step closer to a cure. “Supporting something like this starts with your inner circle of friends and family and when you take it one step further, it touches clients, friends of friends, etc. “Many of my supporters know someone who is also facing something similar and are happy to support this worthy cause with the hopes
that their support will somehow make one person’s life just that much easier,” Andrew says. Multiple sclerosis is a complex, unpredictable and often disabling disease of the central nervous system. It is most often diagnosed in young adults, aged 15 to 40 and can affect vision, hearing, memory, balance and mobility. The MS Society, through events like the annual Scotiabank MS Walk, MS Awareness Month in May and the MS Bike Tour – Cowichan Valley Grape Escape, raises money to support local programs and support research to find a cure. The atmosphere on walk day is exciting. As walkers proudly wear signs noting they’re walking for their sister, daughter, mother or husband, “it turns it from a fundraising event into something more real and it truly makes your efforts seem that much more appreciated in the end,” Andrew says. For Andrew, being part of a team makes the MS Walk all the more special. “The team experience is everything to me,” he says, and the Tiddleywinks Tip Toers, founded by Courtney Surdu, “is a fun way to show togetherness.” And as word spreads, the team is growing. This year Andrew will welcome all his co-workers along with a whole host of other new Tip Toers.

In addition to receivvm ing donations, team d members have raised thousands of dollars over the years through dances, silent auctions and raffles, which always generate significant interest when Andrew m mentions that 1100 per cent of tthe proceeds go to tthe MS Society. At the same time, his goals are as m much about raising awareness of tthe disease and people living with it it. “The more we support charities ssuch as the MS Society, the more w we are helping our friends, family aand colleagues within our commun nity,” he says. That same community-minded aapproach is a key reason Andrew aalso involved his business in his
✦
fundraising efforts. “Philanthropy is ingrained into our business philosophy and we participate jointly to support many community charities,” he explains. “We appreciate the business we’ve gotten through our connection with community events and we hope to build on that. By working with us, not only do people save time and money, they are helping us give back to their community.”

6,000 Scotiabank MS Walk participants will gather in communities across BC and Yukon to raise funds for research and to enhance the quality of life for those living with MS. Canadians have one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world. MS is the most common neurological disease affecting young adults in Canada; every day, three more people in Canada are diagnosed with MS. Women are three times more likely than men to develop MS. Here in Victoria, join the walk Sunday, April 14 at Willows Beach Park (Beach Drive at Dalhousie). Choose a 3km, 6km or 9km route, all wheelchair/ scooter accessible. Dogs on leashes welcome. k.d. lang with the 1964 Mercury Meteor she bought 30 years ago at the beginning of her singing career.
Iconic Canadian singer k.d. lang to sell car that helped launch her career 30 years ago Multi Juno and Grammy Awardwinning singer k.d. lang, who will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame April 21, is selling her beloved ALYN EDWARDS 1964 Mercury Meteor CLASSIC sedan with its unusual RIDES ‘breezeway’ electrically operated rear window. The car has been in dead storage in downtown Vancouver for the past 15 years as the singer, who now lives in Portland, Oregon, pursued her international singing career. She bought the car in Edmonton 30 years ago at the beginning of her singing career. “My Uncle Deed had a Mercury Meteor when I was a kid and I rode in the back seat,” she recalls. “It was black with a red interior and it had a roll-down rear window. To me, that car at that moment became the pinnacle of automotive coolness. I always loved that car and had a sentimental attachment to it.” In 1983, her neighbour had a visitor who was driving the same type of car and k.d. had to have it. “I went next door and asked to buy it. It was in good shape and it became my car,” she says. She paid $2,300 for the Mercury, had it repainted in the original aqua colour and drove it regularly through the Prairie provinces, into Montana and to Vancouver. “It rode like a dream. I drove the car to some gigs although I usually toured in a van with musicians,” k.d. recalls. “After a while, everyone in Edmonton knew it was me with that car.” At that time, k.d. had a little dog named Stinkerton. Motorists would do a double take when k.d. pulled up to a stop sign and the dog would go through the rolled-down rear window to do a quick turnaround on the rear deck before re-entering the car. She was on the highway driving from Edmonton to Red Deer one day when
k.d. lang bought this 1964 Mercury Meteor 30 years ago. It will be sold at the inaugural Vancouver Collector Car Show, Sale and Auction June 22 and 23.
she said to Stinkerton: “Look at those cows!” As she glanced in the rear view mirror, she was horrified to see her dog had gone through the rear window and was riding on the trunk. “I was doing 70 miles an hour. All I could do was slowly put on the brakes so the dog would come back into the car.” k.d. stopped using the car as her career required constant travelling and living away from her Vancouver home. “To be honest, I thought I had sold the car,” she says. “I had given someone instructions to sell it and that didn’t happen.” She has a strong emotional attachment to the near 50-year-old Mercury Meteor with the roll-down ‘breezeway’ rear window. “I love this car. It means a lot to me and it was a huge part of the beginning of my career. It has an AM radio and I used to put on country music or find a station

that played Doris Day and Frank Sinatra. It sounded so good.” So why sell the car now? “I would keep it except, as a Buddhist, I now try not to hold on to things,” she says. “I would rather see someone take the car, drive it sometimes and enjoy that AM radio as I did.” She says the new owner doesn’t have to be a k.d. lang fan. “Just have a sense of humour and have fun with the car.” Her rare Mercury Meteor is in remarkably good shape since it was dry stored for so many years. After the car was removed from the warehouse in downtown Vancouver, Vern Bethel of False Creek Automotive completed repairs to ensure the car is safe and

Corvette concept seen for first time by public METROLAND MEDIA WHEELSTALK.COM
The 12th annual Corvette Technical Session staged Saturday in Richmond Hill marked the first time the general public has seen the 2014 Corvette Stingray concept car. This first-ever showing outside the GM Styling Centre in Detroit drew a crowd of several hundred of the Corvette faithful to Wilson
Niblett Corvette on Yonge Street. Considered Canada’s largest Corvette dealer, Wilson Niblett has been selling the ‘Vettes for 60 years and regularly hosts events at the dealership for Corvette owners and fanciers. Guest speakers this year included Kirk Bennion, exterior design manager, Corvette and Camaro General Motors Styling and Harlan Charles, Corvette product and marketing manager.
Besides opening the floor to any and all questions about the seventh-generation, 2014 Corvette Stingray, they took attendees through the process of taking the Stingray from a
concept to a production vehicle. Prices have not been set but attendees were told, “if you can afford a 2013 Corvette, you can afford a 2014.

2013 Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe earn safety honours METROLAND MEDIA WHEELSTALK.COM
The new 2013 Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe have received the highest available safety rating of Top Safety Pick + from the U.S. Institute for Highway Safety. This recognition makes the Civic Sedan and Coupe the first and only IIHS small cars in the industry to earn a Top Safety Pick +. Honda leads all other brands in achieving Top Safety Pick + ratings with four models – Civic Sedan and Coupe, and Accord Sedan and Coupe. Further, for the 2013 model year, all Honda and Acura models tested by the IIHS have received a Top Safety Pic or Top Safety Pick + rating. The new Civic Sedan, equipped with the second generation of the Honda Advanced Compatibility Body Structure (ACEII), is not only the first small car to earn Top Safety Pick + in the industry, but also the first and only to earn the highest possible rating of GOOD on the IIHS’ new small overlap frontal crash test (sometimes called a ‘narrow offset’ test). This aggressive test is designed to simulate what happens when the front corner of a vehicle collides with another vehicle or an object such as a tree or utility pole at high speed. The ACEII reinforced body structure found on the 2013 Civic further enhances frontal crash energy through a wider range of these offset and oblique collision scenarios.
