City to lobby for bridge upgrades
Salmon River: Council also adds their support for flood assessment, walkway. By Lachlan Labere
market news staff
A flood of letters from the public pushing for the replacement or the Salmon River Bridge and a related flood risk assessment will be channelled into one letter by the City of Salmon Arm. The letters from the public were submitted to the city in response to the B.C. government’s proposed four-laning project for the west end of town. Currently it is the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure’s plan to widen the TransCanada Highway between 30th
Street SW and 10 Street SW. The ministry is seeking feedback on how to spend roughly $510 million of a $650 million funding commitment by the province to four-lane the highway between Kamloops and the Alberta border. Salmon Arm residents and council gave a clear message that the Salmon River Bridge needs to be addressed as a short-term priority, and council has agreed to formalize the shared sentiment in a letter to the ministry. Coun. Chad Eliason recommended the written communication at Monday’s council meeting,

while councillors were discussing the past two week’s correspondence, including several letters relating to the desired bridge replacement and flood risk assessment. Eliason asked that council’s letter include the former, but not the latter. He also asked that a pedestrian walkway be considered with the bridge construction, and that an intersection with traffic lights be built rather than the current SmartCentres’ design. Coun. Marg Kentel suggested adding the flood plain assessment, noting it’s possible the province might pay for its completion.

Eliason accepted Kentel’s recommended amendment, stating that while he had excluded the item from his proposal, he would support her proposed amendment. “I don’t think we will see the bridge any time in the immediate future, so if we ask that now, that they include the flood-risk prevention measures… it would be prudent on our behalf,” said Eliason. Coun. Ken Jamieson said the Salmon River Bridge has been a pet project of his for years, and a topic of discussion with three dif-

Councillors opt to send letter Continued from front ferent ministers. “And it’s always three to five years,” said Jamieson. “Well, we must be close to three to five years. In fact, I suggest we’re at that year where it should be done.” Coun. Alan Harrison agreed with the recommendations, but felt the letter should be simple and to the point, focusing only
on replacing the bridge and the flood assessment. “I don’t think we need to talk anything about who is paying for it,” said Harrison. “We’re asking them to do it. And then we see what response we get.” Harrison, however, chose to support the points recommended by Eliason, as did the rest of council, though there were still differences of opinion. Jamieson called the
final recommendation “watered down,” and said the language isn’t strong enough, while Mayor Nancy Cooper was confident the province would take all the necessary measures regarding the environment and flood risk. “I think our talking about a flood plain hazard assessment, I’m certain they’d look at it as something they would do anyway,” said Cooper.

Directors debate division of community works funds By Barb Brouwer
MARKET NEWS STAFF
A proposal to amend policy regarding Community Works Funds sparked discussion about what’s good for whom and who should pay at the Feb. 28 meeting of Columbia Shuswap Regional District directors. A $60,000 expenditure from the All Electoral Area Community Works Fund for a food waste composting study and regional waste composition study was the issue that had some electoral area directors asking why municipalities are not coughing up dollars for projects that benefit them. Community Works Fund money is a gastax rebate given to local governments for projects that, in general, help clean up water, air or reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The board approved the amendment, but not without discussion first. “What is being recommended is we have had a couple of requests to support solid waste from the EAD (Electoral Area Directors) pool,” said Area E Rural Sicamous director Rhona Martin of the Electoral Area Directors. “If there’s something else that would benefit the whole re-
gion, maybe the municipalities could put some of their gas tax money into the fund. If you get $100,000 gas tax, maybe put one per cent, or say $5,000, into the fund, then it’s truly a CSRD pool not just an EAD pool.” Area D Falkland/ Silver Creek/Ranchero director René Talbot noted area directors
“I am not sure why EA directors have their own meetings away from the CSRD board,” he said. But chief administrative officer Charles Hamilton explained the practice is not uncommon. “They deal with a variety of EA issues without encumbering board directors,” he said. “Nothing is en-

of who pays and who benefits. He said allocation of gas tax funds should not be considered in isolation. “Gas tax money for municipalities is oversubscribed, but from regional districts is under subscribed,” he told directors. “We have to look at give and take from both sides, and also look at demand on municipal gas tax funds, which is much greater than on regional districts.” The amendment, meanwhile will speed up funding approvals as all but 10 per cent of applications for funding will now go directly to the board for approval without first having to have EAD approval.

Voters asking for integrity in politics
The ethnic vote scandal plaguing the governing B.C. Liberal government proved one thing. B.C. voters still care about government and the political system. The B.C. Liberals were caught red-handed trying to score ‘quick wins’ in the upcoming election by apologizing to ethnic groups for past wrongs, such as the Chinese head tax. It’s not a new tactic in politics to try to capture votes through announcement of special projects paid for with tax dollars. The B.C. Liberals themselves made fun of the previous NDP government for shovelling money off the back of a truck into the lead-up to an election. So why are people getting so bent out of shape over this latest example of pandering to the electorate? Even though everyone is doing it, it doesn’t make it right. Despite the cynicism rampant in today’s society and the lack of faith in the system often voiced by voters, people still care deeply about this province and its elected leaders. They care where their tax dollars are spent. And there is still an expectation, no matter how naive, that people elected to positions of power act with integrity and honesty. When they don’t, when politicians fail to uphold the trust the people give to them, B.C. voters react swiftly and decisively to remove them from office. Despite B.C. politic’s reputation as a blood sport, the province includes countless examples of selfless people who dedicated their lives to public service. The ethnic vote scandal might show that we often get less than we ask for from politicians. That doesn’t mean we quit demanding excellence. — Nanaimo News Bulletin

Spring cleaning for fishing season It’s that time of years again, you know, when winter is pretty well all over, the snow is all but gone, but it’s still to early to really call it spring. If nothing else, however, it is a good time to get ready for the upcoming fishing season. Spend a few hours checking over all your lines, leaders, and tippet to make sure the lines are clean and there are no knots in your leaders left over from the last fishing trip. I use a solution of slightly warm water and a very small amount of dish soap to clean my lines, although the commercially made ‘line wipes’ are just as good and a lot easier to use. I don’t know how many times I have started to load my electric trolling motor into the vehicle only to suddenly remember that I forgot to charge the batteries. A smarter person would have put their battery onto a trickle charger when they got back from their last fishing trip. I use two deepcycle batteries. That way, when I’ve gone fishing for several days, I
The GreaT OuTdOOrS James Murray can have one charging at the cabin while I am out on the water with the other. My point is that a battery without a charge isn’t much good when you arrive at the lake and want to head out fishing. Another thing that I have neglected to do when I have returned from a fishing trip, is to clean out the cooler and put the ice packs back in the freezer. On more than one occasion, I’ve gone to put food and drinks in the cooler, only to open the lid and see my ice packs sitting there on the bottom – at room temperature. And even worse, I’ve looked inside and found blue-green mould. I have also learned – again the hard way – to make sure
that I bring along a number of packages of matches, as well as a bundle of newspapers and some fire starter. I put a couple of packs of matches inside a plastic baggy in with my stuff in the cooler, a couple more in one of the pockets of my fishing vest and a couple more in my tackle box. I even have matches in my first aid kit, which is another thing that you should make sure always gets restocked. Sitting around, listening to a fire crackling in the wood stove is for me one of the more pleasurable parts of going fishing and staying at the cabin. Looking for matches to start a fire is one of the less enjoyable things. Waders and rain gear are another one of those things that seem to get put away and forgotten about at the end of one fishing season, an action lamented the following season when leaks are discovered. Proper repairs should be done indoors, at one’s leisure, prior to heading off. Having said that, an emergency repair done with gaffer’s tape will
be good enough to get you by for the day. Take it from me, sometimes the smallest of things can completely screw up even the best planned fishing trip. I’ve learned the hard way, to keep a spare stopper for my boat in my tackle box. Over time the rubber on the stopper can get hard and cracked. It only takes a small amount of water leaking into your boat to get everything that’s sitting on the bottom wet. A couple of rolls of toilet paper, flattened down, do not take up very much space but they sure can come in handy. So can garbage bags, soap, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, gaffer’s tape and some rope – all things that I have forgotten to pack at one time or another. They are also the kind of things that get used up. I guess when it comes to finding the time to do the small things that need to be done in preparation for a fishing trip, what better time than the present – especially now as I look out the window and see that it’s snowing.

An obvious benefit to the omnibus bill
Re: The article “Resident caught in ditch dilemma,” Shuswap Market News March 9. The situation may not be as bad for Mr. Strobl as he thinks or has been led to believe by city council. Perhaps all he needs to do is get the text of the new environmental leg-
islation passed in the much maligned “omnibus bill” passed by the Parliament of Canada. These are exactly the sort of issues that are addressed to resolve these ridiculous rules and regulations contained in the old legislation. As was pointed
out by the government, municipalities and cities were delighted that these very issues could now be dealt with in a rational manner. Not that we would know this from the reaction of the environmental gestapo, the First Nations, or the usual
uninformed media. And this would include our own local Black Press paper. So, Mr. Strobl, read up on the new regulations and then ask city maintenance to do the right thing for you. Al Schalm
Planning meals saves time, energy, money Living Well March is Nutrition Month, but really every month is nutrition month. It’s also the time I begin to contemplate gardening and the delicious things I will plant this year in my attempt to grown my own vegetables. My gardening dreams aside, I find this time of year very busy as I juggle the time demands of work, school, pets, swim lessons and family time. One of the best things I have done to save myself time, energy and money is plan weekly meals in advance. Ideally a monthly meal plan would be
great, but even a week at a time can work wonders. The first and most important thing I do is brainstorm some meal ideas that I know my family will like. The brainstorming phase can be fun. I ask friends, family and co-workers for their favourite recipes. Once I have collected some great ideas, I go through them and see which ones will work. Sometimes I modify the recipes to suit our tastes, dietary preferences, and needs. Then I look at the week’s activities to see if there are any days that are busier than others. I find it helps to use a crock pot on those days or make larger meals on the weekend in order to reheat left-
overs throughout the week. Another great time-saving tip I have discovered is to double up at least two of the recipe ideas each week, preferably those that are family favourites and will freeze well. Once I have my top five to seven recipes, its time to write out a grocery list. I start by taking inventory and going through my cupboard, pantry and fridge to see if there are any items
on the grocery list that I already have or may need. Once my list is complete, I choose a good time for shopping. I’ve learned that for me this means not shopping when hungry. Having a healthy snack before I enter the store helps keep me focused on my list and reduces temptation to buy other food. -Alexis Blueschke is a registered dietitian with Interior Health.

Grab paddle, join team Their paddles are ready to hit the water but before they do the GT Dragon Boat Society would like to invite both new and experience paddlers to join their team. The season is about to begin and a registration date has been set. All those who think they may be interested are asked to meet in the parking lot at the Blind Bay Village Grocer between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on April 13. Last year the society had 85 active members who would head to the Blind Bay waters on multiple evenings throughout the week.
For those who think they would like to give dragonboating a shot, but aren’t quite sure if they would like to commit to a membership, three sessions will be offered free of charge. These sessions will include instruction on how to do the sport, and those attending can ask as many questions as they like. The society generally gets members of all ages, with last years crews ranging from 17 to 80 years of age. For more information, call Todd McDonald at 250-8352386, or Margot Hall

They might be young, but students still feel stress. This is something Sorrento Elementary School officials recognize in their students, and have undertaken measures to help. The elementary school has been working with students over the last few years in a program that helps them not only understand when they are feeling stressed out

School principal, Ian Landy, says he had the pilot class for the program when he taught in Prince George and was amazed at how well the program worked. stretches to 20 hours. This is a good and bad thing he says – bad because it takes so much time out of the regular curriculum, great because the program is creating so much conversation among the students. Landy does not question whether or not the program itself works, as he has seen it firsthand. He explains that students might not use what they learn right away, but they think
about it and remember it, and years later when they encounter a stressful situation they tap into this information. Landy describes seeing one of the students who had taken the program put what he had learned into practice in a situation two years later. Each child processes what is taught in their own way, and they discuss the program among themselves for weeks after, he says.

Government, First Nations success should be highlighted From the hiLL colin mayes I have not commented on the recent actions of some First Nations members regarding the “Idle No More” demonstrations or Chief Spence’s hunger strike in Ottawa. The reason is I do not want, through any of my comments, to drive any wedge between constituents and the First Nations People of the OkanaganShuswap. Over the past seven years, I have had a good working relationship with the chiefs of all the five bands in my riding. Yes, there are outstanding issues with the Crown that
need to be resolved, but our government has worked with the First Nations leadership to put in a place a plan to create opportunity for all First Nations people. Aboriginal leadership and the Government of Canada have agreed that education, (academic, including skills and trades training for aboriginal students), is the key to jobs, prosperity and independence. Since 2006, our government has built more than 30 new schools, renovated more than 200 schools and funded skills and trades training for aboriginal students across Canada. Partnering with resource sector companies and First Nations bands, your government has helped many aboriginals integrate into the work force in mining and oil and gas sector projects (over 700 projects). As the former chair
of the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, I was witness to many very capable aboriginal leaders that were moving their communities forward. I also was witness to a few that were not. This is also true of non-aboriginal communities. The success of a community is the direct result of good leadership. This is why your government has taken action to make certain there is transparent and open accounting of band finances. We have introduced legislation to put in place a framework of open and fair band elections, and ensure that all band members experience the freedoms and human rights attributed to all Canadians. This will help band members hold their leaders accountable as is done in non-aboriginal communities. The aboriginal lead-
ership and our government are making progress. A poll taken during these demonstrations found that over 50 per cent of aboriginals did not support “Idle No More” and over 60 per cent did not support Chief Spence’s actions. I wish we could hear more about the First Nations and the Government of Canada working successfully together rather than always hearing the negative. We have not addressed all the issues, but we are dealing with decades of bad policy, and it takes time to build a new relationship and move forward together. All Canadians both aboriginal and non-aboriginal need to embrace one another with a common resolve to work together. - Colin Mayes, is the member of Parliament for Okanagan-Shuswap

Scammer attempts to nab credit info By Tracy Hughes
market news staff
A scammer has introduced a slick campaign to bilk consumers under the guise of raising money for Ronald McDonald House. Salmon Arm RCMP were contacted by a resident in the area of 23rd Street NE, who had a funny feeling after making a supposed donation and receiving McDonald’s gift cards in exchange. The door-to-door scammer claimed to be representing Ronald McDonald House and was wearing a photo ID tag with McDonald’s logo and the last name
“Harris.” The scammer was well dressed, wearing a dark suit. He is Caucasian, about six feet tall with dark hair. The man advised the resident that if he made a donation through his Visa card, he would be able to immediately issue a tax donation receipt. After the man left, the man and his wife became suspicious and decided to call the local McDonald’s to check. They were informed that there was no doorto-door campaign in progress, so the couple went to the store to see if the gift cards were valid. While the cards were legitimate Mc-
Donald’s gift cards, they were void with no value attached. The couple suspect they were stolen or previously used cards. They immediately contacted their credit card company and cancelled their card and then phoned police. “It’s another skimming operation,” said Staff Sgt. Kevin Keane of the Salmon Arm RCMP. “Last fall it was Tim (Hortons) cards.” Keane advises anyone who may have been scammed to contact them and also advised the public to be cautious with their credit card information.
“These people went to great lengths to appear legitimate,” says the victim. “I was lucky and wasn’t out anything because I cancelled my card... I just don’t want anyone else to get taken.”

More creative economic ideas
Jim Cooperman The multiple economic benefits that could be achieved by paying better attention to changing demographics was the focus of the last column and this strategy has been at the centre of University of Toronto economics professor David Foot’s work. His series of books, Boom, Bust and Echo, demonstrates the power of demographics to help understand the past and predict the future. Foot explained how small towns will benefit as many boomers will seek a slowerpaced life upon retirement where they can enjoy nature, culture and a lower-cost lifestyle. The Shuswap cerDon’t tainly fits the bill for retirees and the statistics already show the inward migration of seniors. The 2011 census reveals that the percentage of seniors living in the Shuswap is 23 per cent versus the B.C. average of 15.8 per cent. And the percentage of families with children under 24 in the Shuswap is just 36 per cent, while the B.C. average is 47.7 per cent. Arts and culture plays a major role in attracting boomers to smaller communities that is already happen-
Anielski is the author of The Economics of Happiness, a revolutionary book that details how capitalism has entrenched increasing inequality, thus failing to provide genuine happiness and how a new measurement model is needed to build the new economy of wellbeing. He defines the current practice of economics as more of an ideology than a science as it places the goal of maximizing wealth above the principles of social and environmental responsibility. Society, according to Anielski, needs a new goal of genuine wealth with a more comprehensive accounting system that integrates human, social, natural and financial capital into the balance sheets. Anielski’s vision of an economic renaissance based on a sustainable future will likely serve to stimulate the creative minds

Their goal is to link together the creative sector, the agricultural sector, the manufacturing sector, the tourism sector, the building sector, the volunteer service sector, conservation advocates and local political leaders to develop a strategy for moving the Shuswap community forward towards the “new society and new economy.” Plan B:E is organizing a workshop for April 27 to bring community leaders together to begin the process to develop a plan for a successful, sustainable and viable future. They are bringing in a true visionary, progressive economist Mark Anielski, as the keynote speaker to help inspire the roundtable discussions that will follow his talk.

Now, a new organization has sprung up in Salmon Arm called InoV8 that is a collective of local businesses made up of writers, illustrators, musicians, publishers, filmmakers, designers, printers and photographers. Their goal is to raise awareness about the importance of creativity in all aspects of community building. Last November, InoV8 gave a presentation to municipal decision makers about the significant role that creative enterprises have in the local economy. Advantages of this high-growth creative sector include an increased multiplier effect that helps spread the wealth within the community, a better way to connect to people and ideas, and an effective strategy to join the current trend of moving from a resource-based economy to a knowledge-based pay for 90 days economy. The creative economy develops into a circle of growth, whereby as a new idea or technology is developed, there is a need for creative design to promote its use among consumers. Examples of how the creative sector successfully operates are everywhere, from imaginative signage, innovative infrastructure, to unique advertising and promotional campaigns. City council supports trails, arts programs By Lachlan Labere

Salmon Arm council has given its stamp of approval to two feefor-service agreements that will see the city enter a mutually beneficial partnership with two prominent Shuswap organizations. The city will be contributing to arts and culture, as well as trails with the signing of agreements with
the Salmon Arm Arts Centre and the Shuswap Trail Alliance. Both agreements are for three-year terms, with the Trail Alliance receiving $40,000 each year, and the Arts Centre $35,000. The Arts Centre was initially seeking a fiveyear agreement with the city, but council favoured a three-year term. The funding will assist in the centre’s operations.

Chase residents will be able to line the streets to take in the latest event to come to the village, the first-ever lawn mower races. Chase council voted Tuesday to shut down Shuswap Avenue on Saturday, April 6 between the hours of 11:45 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. to accommodate the village’s first lawn mower race. Sue Bleile had sent a letter to the council on behalf of Sears, requesting the shutdown of a one-block stretch of Shuswap Avenue. The area will be used to conduct the race, which is expected to begin at the Cozy Corner and continue down to the finish line located at Sears. Bleile has already received support from most of the neighbouring businesses and has contacted Lakeside Concession and Mini Donuts in hopes of them attending the event as well. Council members also stated that they

When Chase residents were asked what they thought about the event, a number of them were thrilled, saying that it sounded like fun and they would certainly be in attendance. Sears has already put out a challenge to the village councillors as well as other businesses to enter a lawn mower of their own. Awards will be given

HOW CAN YOU HELP? Your community needs your help to prepare for emergencies. ESS volunteers:
• inform community businesses of the program • identify potential reception centres and group lodging sites • recruit and train more volunteers • complete contact lists and exercise the plan • inform the public of help available following a disaster More volunteers are always needed and welcomed. Disaster work offers a unique opportunity to help others when help is needed most. Working in this field challenges volunteers to stretch their own limits and potential.
YOUR LOCAL TEAM NEEDS VOLUNTEERS WHO: • have a concern for people affected by disaster, and want to help • have good communication skills • are able to respond on short notice • are flexible and work well as part of a team • are in good health • have a sense of adventure No specific skills are required to become a volunteer. However, skills such as volunteer management, interviewing and second languages are great assets.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE REWARDS IN ESS? Making a Difference: You are part of a team that provides shelter, food and a shoulder to lean on when disaster forces people from their homes. Training: Offered through the Justice Institute and partner agencies, training includes Reception Centre Operations, Family Reunification, Disaster Child Care and others. Recognition: Volunteers form the backbone of ESS. Recognition of their efforts may take many forms, including volunteer appreciation events, certificates, awards or letters from local government or provincial government, in addition to expressions of appreciation from peers, community members and those they have helped. Protection: All ESS volunteers receive Workers’ Compensation Board and liability insurance coverage while on assignment.

The B.C. government and the B.C Medical Association are offering doctors a $100,000 bonus to relocate to selected rural communities for three years. The latest incentive is on top of a program to forgive student debt for doctors who will set up a medical practice outside urban areas, and other inducements to graduating and foreign doctors to venture outside large cities. Health Minister Margaret MacDiarmid and BCMA president Dr. Shelley Ross announced the program Wednesday. Both said it was a difficult task picking the most needy locations, and expressed hope that it is successful and can be expanded. In the Interior Health Authority, Princeton and Clearwater are funded for two general practitioners each, and Nakusp gets one. Cranbrook is funded for one anesthesiologist. Despite continual doctor shortages, Chase was not chosen for the program. MacDiarmid, a family doctor in Rossland before going into politics, said these won’t be typical office-based medical practices. The GP positions will involve hospital and residential care, supported by a relief physician program so doctors can take some weekends and vacations. Some involve “outreach” visits to even more remote communities, including aboriginal villages. Eligible doctors will get $50,000 up front and the rest after one year, with repayment required if they don’t stay for three years.

North Shuswap Community Hall looking for volunteers The North Shuswap Community Association (NSCA) is asking members of the community to donate a small portion of their time for something that will benefit the entire community. Despite the snow that fell earlier this week, spring is approaching, and with it comes the annual spring cleanup of the North Shuswap Community Hall and Park. The NSCA is looking for volunteers of all ages to save the date on their calendar and make their way down on April 14 at 9 a.m. There will be a variety of tasks to be completed throughout the day and those who can are asked to bring along rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows or any other tool that might make the job a little easier. The community hall is rented out for all sorts of events throughout the year, including weddings,
entertainment, craft fairs and much more. The cleanup organizers stress the importance of keeping the hall looking tip-top from the insideout, as it makes it more inviting for those who might be interested in using it for their event. It is these rentals which provide the funding that allows them to keep the hall doors open, and the building available for emergency purposes as well. High school students who wish to donate their time can use these hours to help meet their school’s volunteer requirements, by requesting a letter of acknowledgment. Tea, coffee and other goodies will be made available for a midmorning snack, and will be followed by a complimentary barbecue.

ANTHONY FRANCIS SINKELDAM April 8th, 1950 - March 3rd, 2013 With love and pride, we announce the passing of Anthony. Pride because, as a self-taught artist Anthony reached out to the world with his wonderful oil paintings, expressing his love and gratitude of and to this planet, speaking the language of his art saying to all that would but listen: “find peace here.” Through his art he has touched many lives. He left this world quietly, still knowing, even in times of pain and sorrow, beauty surrounds us. Anthony is survived by his children Jessica, Lyndon and Rodney, and, his friend and companion in life, Lee Christensen. The loss of Anthony will also be felt by many others, including friends and neighbours, some he knew for many years, some a few months and some only for a brief moment in time, when he may have offered help, a kind word or, simply his winning smile. Anthony was born in Amsterdam, Holland. He emigrated, with his family, to Canada in 1952, becoming a very proud Canadian. Upon arriving in Canada, his family settled in the Toronto area, in the Italian section, then later to the country where they became dairy farmers. Anthony enjoyed his studies; his passion was always art, which he began at age 5. His wish was to attend Art College, but times as they were, and being part of a hard-working family, upon graduation, Anthony worked at Eaton’s, where he learned the flooring installation trade. Then, being an adventurous young man, with a keen interest in the world he travelled for a year, creating and selling his paintings as he went, enabling him to see much of Europe. Later, Anthony moved to Australia where he resided for ten years. Missing Canada he returned to live in Vancouver, BC until, a one-time visit to the Cariboo convinced him the Cariboo suited him better. The following year he moved to the 108 Mile, Lac La Hache area, where he married and his children Lyndon and Jessica were born. While living in Lac La Hache he became well-known for his art. Many of which can be seen in homes and businesses in the area (as well as worldwide). Lionel’s fruit stand, in Lac La Hache bears Anthony’s beautiful painted sunflowers. Having an interest in history he took a course in building preservation and restoration, participating in the restoration of historic buildings in both, 108 Mile and Barkerville. He also enjoyed writing, short stories and poetry. He continued to reside in the Cariboo until 2009, 25 years. Anthony recently moved to Salmon Arm, BC where he once again became connected to the local “art scene”. He was happy in his new home town, enjoying the community and his new friends. He would have been pleased if you like, Google his name to see his art. Messages may be sent to northwinds@live.ca There will be no service at this time. Anthony, we wish you Peace in your new world. Online condolences can be sent through Anthony’s obituary at www.bowersfuneralservice.com Funeral arrangements are in the care of Bowers Funeral Service, Salmon Arm, BC

Robert Babakaiff of Arro Wood Heat Services has been in business for 5 years. A 45-year resident of Salmon Arm, he believes in buying his products locally. After being laid off from Coe/Newnes, he saw there was a need for a reliable wood heat technician. He became certified in the WETT program – which is a Canadian recognized association, allowing him to be able to inspect, install and maintain wood burning stoves and fireplaces. His services include chimney sweeping, estimates and advice on purchasing and installation of wood burning stoves, such as size needed for the square footage, and the best stove to meet your needs. Robert’s motto “Burning Clean = More Green” not only refers to the money saved when keeping your stove or fireplace maintained, it also refers to the environment, as the new stoves burn cleaner and more efficiently. Repeat customers are spreading the word of his fair pricing and thorough job. For all your wood heat needs, call Robert today for an estimate.

SportS lots of snow left at larch Hills It was a sea of blue on the podium at the final Okanagan Teck race at Sovereign Lake last weekend. Those distinctive bright blue Larch Hills jackets dominated the colour scheme as awards were made from fifth to first in each age category. Then Larch Hills was awarded the aggregate Okanagan Teck series award for the most points over the season. Congrats to the LH team for a wonderfully successful ski season. For many, the racing season is over, but for 12 skiers the Canadian Championships at Callaghan Valley, Whistler, are yet to come – March 22 to 31. Best of luck to these athletes competing at the national level. And a huge thanks to the coaches, parents and waxers who will accompany them – and have given the entire team so much support over the ski season. At the Midget Championships in Revelstoke in early March, the Larch Hills Junior Racing team won the overall championship for the first time, wresting it from the powerful Hol-
Trail Tales Marcia Beckner lyburn Club who had dominated the Midgets these many championships. Way to go team! When Brian McKeever crossed the finish line as winner at the Reino Keski-Salmi Loppet, we noticed he was using skating skis. Curious, since this is a classic only event. Brian explained that he had double-poled the 36-km so needed no wax. He was in training mode for the 90-km Swedish Vasaloppet early March. My cousin in Edmonton remarked that the winner of the 50-km Canadian Birkebeiner there mid-February was “some guy who double-poled the whole thing!” That was Brian. So I checked out the results for the Vasaloppet held March 3. Of the
15,000 entries, Brian came 45th, just 12 minutes behind the winner. Remarkable result! And then I read that the winner, Jorgen Aukland from Norway, was the first Vasaloppet winner in its 89-year history to win the race without grip wax. So doublepoling seems to be the new way of the loppet
racers. Personally, I can’t imagine doublepoling 90-km – doublepoling over Bilbo’s Bog is enough at one whack for me. Marvellous skiing in the Larch Hills yet. Don’t let the lack of snow in the valley mislead you. A couple of weeks ago 12 of us Wednesday Wenches

YOU ARE HERE. AND SO ARE WE.
Much interest in ‘Jackrabbit’ Continued from A24 tions. Another part of the Larch Hills system to explore. We expect to be skiing and exploring into April, with the considerable snow base up there. My column recently about Jackrabbit Johanssen has elicited much feedback from folks who either knew him, skied at the club which he helped found
in Morin Heights, Quebec, or have stories of Jackrabbit themselves. The man was bigger than life. No wonder the kids’ ski program in Canada is called the “Jackrabbit Ski Program.” We continue to have an international presence on the hill. While out skiing on Ermine Frolic last Saturday we got to talking to a couple of gals. One introduced the
other as her Australian visitor who was out on cross-country skis for the first time. And she was loving it. As a snowboarder she had a feel for the snow but the skinny boards and tracks were a challenge. There is a Worldloppet at Falls Creek in the Snowy Mountains of Australia. That might have to be one of the 10 in my Worldloppet passport. Happy spring!
