Quick response by the Cranbrook RCMP prevented this shed fire from destroying an adjoining building. Submitted On the 14th day of March 2013 at 5:52 in the morning, Cranbrook RCMP responded to a complaint of a prowler in the 1800 block of 6th St S, who was slashing vehicle tires. Upon police attendance the officers heard a “whomp” sound as they entered a back yard and immediately saw a wooden garden shed on fire. The officers acted quickly to evacuate the

Attention deficit and hyperactivity
Over the last few weeks I have seen a number of young people who are struggling at school because they can’t focus, have a hard time sitting still, and are easily distracted. The medical label (aka diagnosis) attached to this constellation of symptoms is attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the recommended treatment is Ritalin or Concerta. While these drugs are sometimes necessary, they are more often used unnecessarily. Let’s take a step back and think about treating the underlying cause of health problems, including ADHD. In an ideal world, any treatment for a problem should treat the cause. Ritalin works by fine-tuning the neurons in a part of the brain called the prefrontal cortex allowing for better concentration. It seems to me a good question to ask would be “why is the brain affected so that it is hard to concentrate?” We know for sure that ADHD is not caused by a

deficiency of a man-made drug. What I see with ADHD is that the child is affected by some combination of food intolerance, nutritional deficiencies and environment. From a dietary perspective many foods can trigger ADHD if the child is reactive to that food. Common triggers are sugar, wheat, dairy, citrus, egg, soy, food colourings and additives. Testing for these and other foods is crucial to helping a child with ADHD. Nutrient deficiencies like iron and hearing and visual troubles can also be involved. The environment can also play a role and not getting enough sleep is a common issue that makes concentration more difficult. Turmoil in the home is sometimes involved, as is exposure to toxins like lead. ADHD is a complex disorder that demands a close look at the above issues. Sure, using medication is sometimes needed and in many cases can be avoided if the underlying cause of the problem is addressed.

As we tasted our way through the selection at Misconduct Wine Co. last year I couldn’t help but think back to why we fell in love with visits to wineries so long ago. Owner Richard da Silva is knowledgeable and passionate. Enthusiasm and energy course through his body, lifting up everyone around him. And he happens to make good wine. Very good wine. In the past couple of weeks we have opened two bottles from our purchases on that visit, each to match with a meal. In both cases we were pleased with the pairings, but also to be reminded about our initial impression of da Dilva’s wines. During out tasting it had been apparent that he is achieving his stated goal of not just producing what other wineries around the province are already doing. Misconduct wines are full bodied and very complex, much more Old World than modern in style. Exactly to my taste preferences. And they are made to cellar--if one can resist opening them right away. First, a little about the winery and its image. Located right at the entrance to Naramata, Misconduct Wine Co. is a playful homage to the Roaring Twenties, with stylish labeling, created in-house, and a clever story line that references speakeasies, bootlegging, molls and massacres. The tasting room and wine shop is generously sized and
through a doorway is The Kitchen, which in the summer months offers up a small but very appealing menu. If you time your arrival to Misconduct Wine Co. just right, as we did, da Silva, carrying a mittful of tools and looking like the joint’s handyman, will greet you at the door and lead you directly into as entertaining a tasting as you are likely to find anywhere. A couple of weeks ago we pulled a container of stew from the freezer. It was from a big pot of beef and root vegetable stew I had made earlier in the winter. I remembered that it was quite spicy, so when I went down to the wine cellar I was in search of something hearty that would complement the flavours. Misconduct wines have two distinct label designs and the bottle I selected had one that on first glance can be mistaken for a French wine. The Syrah-Malbec label is pale blue, with “Suspect Series” in script beneath a coat of arms. I’ll leave the telling of the coat of arms story to da Silva when you stop in at the winery. This wine spent 34 months in oak. It is very dark in colour and has a great aroma. Pepper and nutmeg abound, along with both ripe and dried fruit flavours. It has a remarkably long finish. I enjoyed taking a spoonful of stew into my mouth and chewing a few times, then sipping from my glass. The wine matched so beautifully that I could have got away with telling people I had also used it in the making of
the stew. At $38 a bottle (and worth every cent), though, that wasn’t gonna happen. Then, this week, we settled into our favourite takeout meal, pad thai and drunken noodles with chicken (and some fantastic boneless stuffed chicken wings) from Kootenay Thai Restaurant here in Creston. I had just lightly chilled a bottle of Massacre Rose so that it wasn’t so cold that the nose and flavours became muted. The label on that bottle is one of three stylishly cartooned designs that closely mirror the speakeasy theme. The wine is an unusual blend of Merlot, Cabernet Suavignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Malbec Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. It might sound like a bit of a hodge-podge, but da Silva undoubtedly had a reason for using each of the varietals. Never question the wisdom of a winemaker when you are happy with the result. Massacre Rose is an amazing amalgam of fruit flavours that range from raspberry and strawberry all the way to peach, apple and citrus. It made our very tasty takeout doubly good and I am grateful that I still have another bottle in the cellar. This is a 2010 Rose that will be great for another few years yet. Misconduct Wine Co. is a not to be missed visit while in the Penticton-Naramata region, another reminder that small wineries often produce the very best wines.

The B.C. government has invested $580,000 to support the program, and the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) has invested $560,000. The college has been working closely with both partners and with industry to ensure they can put the latest tools in the hands of B.C. students. “Our resource industries remain a key part of B.C.’s economy. So it’s vital that the right trades training equipment is available to our postsecondary institutions to ensure students enter the labour market with the skills the sector needs. This funding will enable the college to continue their excellent work, training students for the mining industry’s needs today and in the future,” said Bill Bennett, Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. The funding will help the college to buy simulators, plus a truck and trailer to transport the equipment between campuses to ensure that as many students as possible benefit from the new equipment. “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this funding. This is good news for not only the college but for students looking to learn here in the Kootenays. The simulators will prepare our students for job opportunities across the province,” said Nick Rubidge, president and CEO, College of the Rockies. The provincial government funding is part of $17 million announced last September for public post-secondary institutions around the province to upgrade skills training equipment. It aligns with BC Skills and Training Plan priorities to ensure that students get access to the right training tools and that skills training matches the needs of regional economies. A 2012 report by the Mining Industry Human Resources council in conjunction with the Mining Association of BC indicated that the top two mining sector indemand occupations in the next 10 years will be heavy-equipment operators and truck drivers. It indicated that of 11,330 workers needed in the B.C. mining industry, 6,370 will be needed in the Kootenays.

Monday, March 18, 2013 Kootenay News Advertiser
History’s oldest industry is alive and well in the East Kootenay by Lily Durham The Kootenay Livestock Association held their Annual General Meeting on Saturday February 9th at the Heritage Inn in Cranbrook. This years venue was a great location as meetings were held downstairs through the afternoon and followed by the banquet afterwards upstairs. The day began with coffee, cookies and some follow up with fellow ranchers and introductions to some new faces. It is great to see that other young folks are taking over their parents ventures in Agriculture and Livestock when faced with
harsher times to be in the Industry. President Jordy Thibeault brought the meeting to order with a updated presidents message. He thanked many members in attendance for their hard work and efforts as well as spoke on some of the issues facing the ranchers in the upcoming years. He also thanked the committee for allowing him to preside over the association for the past 4 years and wished the best to the new president coming in. Committee Reports were given and special guest Kevin Boone, General Manager of the BC Cattlemen’s Association spoke on what
services the BCCA has to offer to BC ranchers and various upcoming changes to structure within the association. He reminded us that ranchers have been caring for the environment through water, grass & trees from day one. The rancher maintains and continues to enhance these resources as they are important to them. Kevin spoke on the primary goals of BCCA, one being they represent the producer through various government, associations and councils. He spoke of BC Beef day when government meets with the association to learn more see History’s page 11

Farm & Ranch election. The business side of the day rounded up with elections and draws for various prizes that were donated. Congratulations to Randy Reay on his upcoming term as President, to new directors and to those that are still holding their positions to help with the association. Ranchers alike were upstairs for the banquet and it was great to see a full house. Cocktails followed by grace given by Morgan Dilts and a superb supper put on by the Heritage Inn. Jordy gave a short

about the beef industry. The new “society act” will definitely unite the province in a balanced way to contribute to the BCCA’s continual growth and board of directors. Kevin spoke of the new structure and how it will give all areas of the province communication and save the Association money. There will be 7 zones with 12 directors and 5 committees (Environment, Land stewardships, Livestock Protection, Research & Public Affairs). Our next speaker was Brian Zak from the Grassland & Rangeland Enhancement Program. Brian spoke on the various issues the Program has faced throughout the term and recommending working with the EKICP to map out invasive plants on ranges that KLA members hold and possibly develop rancher spraying workshops. Noxious weeds are continually a problem for range and farm use. They choke out the life of any other plants within their vicinity and continue to be a thorn in a ranchers side. Much spraying has been done but the weeds are still cropping up and permanent removal of these invasive species
is needed. Brian said: “We need to continue to protect and enhance grasslands and range areas within the Kootenay region.” MLA Bill Bennett spoke with great passion and desire to help the local ranchers with various issues they are facing and gave a summary on the carbon tax, PST exemption in relations to agriculture, the ALR and BC Hydro

This event was definitely a family social and it brought back many memories of years gone by with 3-4 generation ranchers and their families, traditional stories being told and kids running throughout. As evening set in the youngest could be found curled up on coats in the corner and young and old danced to good ol’ country tunes. Most certainly the positive benefit to our ranching community. in life. Kids nowadays have technology to entertain them and don’t get the gifts of seeing a new born calf being born or watching a field grow from the early stages of seeding to harvest. They don’t get to learn the true values of hard work with very little compensation than knowing you are contributing to an industry that has long been passed on. Agriculture is what we eat. Even for those that choose to eat vegetables as their only pallet it is still a part of Farming and ranching. We need to continue to preserve this industry and allow it to continue to grow. Last time I checked a ‘hard drive’ was a trip through the range and ‘rams’ were male sheep, ‘safe mode’ was referring to when
the bull wasn’t in the corral and ‘virtual reality’ was every fall when we sold the cattle (depending on the market). Ranching in the East Kootenay is still going strong even with the various challenges that continually hit the industry. Dam reviews, cattle losses, fencing, range lands, meat inspection, wildlife, weeds, ALR mandates, funding, animal welfare, plus much more face this industry but remember folks, without them we will truly be at a loss for they are the driving force behind the food we eat and rely on daily.

the Heritage Inn Hotel and Convention Center in Cranbrook (registration begins at 9:00 am). While invasive plant managers use a variety

things that actually eat invasive plants). As always, EKIPC has enlisted some engaging speakers to share their ideas and experiences
with you. Jo-Ann Fox from the Southern Interior Weed management Committee (SIWMC) will be doing a presentation on the weed de-

lowing website: www. livestockforlandscapes. com. The East Kootenay Invasive Plant Council is more than just a Society and a logo – the inner workings of this organization are a local group of dedicated and passionate people who share a common vision of protecting our East Kootenay landscapes from the impacts of invasive species. Together, the work of these people has resonated beyond the borders of our Regional District and EKIPC is consistently recognized as one of the lead regional invasive species organizations in the province. If you share our vision or are just interested to learn more about what you can do - please come down to our AGM and meet our friendly Board of Directors. EKIPC will be electing new members to our Board at our AGM and if you have skills that can be of benefit to this group this will be your chance to join in. No invasive plant background is necessary to sit on the Board, just a skill set and passion for helping preserve our ecosystems is all that is necessary. EKIPC is looking for Board members with the specific
skills of: business; accounting; law; administration; marketing/ advertising; council development and human resources. Not sure about committing to sit on the Board? There are plenty of other opportunities to participate and get your feet wet, ranging from becoming a member, to serving on different standing committees and advisory committees. Without the dedicated people working with us over the years EKIPC would not have accomplished half of what we have. Please contact EKIPC’s Chair Chris Bosman at 250-489-2791 if you are interested in becoming involved with our fun loving group. To register for the AGM and Speaker Series please contact Stephanie Daniels at 250-426-1206 or at Stephanie.Daniels@ gov.bc.ca. As we all wind up for another busy field season, this gathering will serve as an excellent opportunity for old colleagues to catch up, new faces to introduce themselves and for everyone to get fired up to do battle against invasive species again this year. Our future generations depend on it.

Obituaries OBITUARY
Kassy Margaret May Evans 1994 - 2013 It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our beautiful baby girl Kassy on Monday, March 11, 2013 in Cranbrook at 18 years of age. She was a strong, courageous, smart, gifted, caring and extremely thoughtful young lady. She had many accomplishments in her life, like being awarded the Governor General's Academic Medal for 2012. Her wishes are that we remember these accomplishments when we think of her. Our wishes are that we also remember her smile, her sense of humour and her loving heart. She was her father's "Angel" and her mother's "Chica". You are forever in our thoughts Angel. Kassy is sorely missed by her parents Laine Evans (Wendy Larsen), Michelle Evans (Pat McNeill); her brother Cody Evans; her cousin who was more like a second brother Ryley Pungor; grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. She was predeceased by her Auntie Susan and her Grandma Myra. A memorial service for Kassy will be held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation in honour of Kassy may do so to the: East Kootenay Foundation For Health, 13 – 24th Avenue North, Cranbrook, British Columbia, V1C 3H9. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com

FORD (BC) LTD
The Challenger is all the car Efficient and roomy, the Forester is perfect for families you remember plus a lot more
PHOTO SUBMITTED
Tons of space with a fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine makes the Forester a great choice.
Supreme styling and an engine that just won’t quit – what more could you want?
Overall: Subie’s smallute/wagon gives the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Ford Escape a run for their money; all-wheel-drive standard, of course; an all-new 2014 Forester is now available now as well. Drivetrain: The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder is a steady performer with fuelconsumption numbers that will impress; WRX-based turbocharged four-cylinder adds extra punch; CVT likely a certainty next time around. The Forester is based on the previous-generation Subaru Impreza, but follows its own path by offering more space and ruggedness plus a choice of engines. Base models come with a 2.5-litre horizontally opposed four-cylinder (two pistons are placed on each side of the crankshaft at 180 degrees) that makes 170 horsepower. Fuel
Overall: How does Dodge try to chase down the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro? With plenty of firepower available through a range of seven different models, including a new Rallye Redline series that adds some sporting flair for buyers on a V6 budget. Drivetrain: A 305-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 starts the Challenger rolling; two optional “Hemi” V8s worth 375 and 470 horses ready to liquefy tires and asphalt. If you’re a Ford Mustang or Chevy Camaro owner, you can see yourself coming or going nearly any time you hit the street. But whether by design or something else, the less common (by quite a bit) Dodge Challenger is almost like driving a low-volume production model that gets noticed because there are fewer around
economy rings in at 9.9 l/100 km in the city and 7.5 highway, while the base Outback is rated at 9.5/6.9 city/highway. Optional for the Forester, but not available in the Outback, is a turbocharged dual-overhead-cam version of the 2.5 that generates 224 horsepower. The first of two all-wheel-drive systems is a permanently engaged unit for five-speed-manual transmission models that splits the torque 50:50 under normal driving situations, but transfers power to the front or rear wheels when needed. A continuously variable version comes with four-speed automatic-transmissionequipped Foresters that constantly monitors driving and road conditions and reacts accordingly. Manual-gearbox Foresters incorporate Incline Start Assist that keeps the vehicle from rolling backward
when letting out the clutch on a steep incline. There are no real surprises when it comes to the standard-equipment list, which encompasses air conditioning, cruise control, tilt steering wheel, remote keyless entry, height-adjustable driver’s seat, fourspeaker audio system and power windows, locks and mirrors. Standard or available on up-level models are climate control, alloy wheels, heated leather-covered seats, reclining back seat, power moonroof, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, premium 100-watt audio system and touch-screen navigation. So, Outback or Forester? If a taller ride height and cargo area are overriding factors as well as price, the choice seems clear, although it would be really difficult to go wrong with either.
to trip over. The Challenger is actually based on a shortened version of the previous Chrysler 300 platform and uses many of its components. While that’s good for business by minimizing development and production costs, it also makes for a car that, for a supposedly sporty two-door, is a bit on the chunky side. Like many Chrysler products, the base Challenger uses a 3.6-litre V6 that in this case puts out 305 horses. That’s short of the 323-horsepower V6 used by the Camaro, but identical to the Mustang’s 305 rating. The carryover 5.7-litre Hemi installed in the R/T makes 375 horsepower again this year, less than the 412-444 horses delivered by Ford and the maximum 426 from the Chevy. Dodge’s top dog SRT8 392’s 470 horsepower 6.4-litre V8 isn’t enough to

take on the Shelby GT500 or the Camaro ZL1, which put out as much as 192 more ponies. Still, there’s no sight — or sound — like an SRT8 392 at full song whether from behind the wheel or listening from the sidelines. For the 2013 model year, there are half dozen distinct trim levels being showcased, including the new Rallye Redline that slots between the SXT Plus (available with a Super Sport Group of goodies, but Chevrolet might not be too happy about the name) and the Hemi-powered R/T. This V6 model comes dressed up with “red-hot” exterior trim, special Black Chrome 20-inch wheels, heavy-duty suspension and brakes and a performance rear-axle ratio.
