“What specific learning needs and opportunities exist in the valley when it comes to farming, food production, and food security?” “What kinds of educational programs, services and facilities would best meet local needs?” Those questions will be addressed in community agriculture learning needs assessment (CALNA) when data is collected from March to August this year. In a presentation to town council at the March 12 meeting, College of the Rockies employees Nigel Francis and Laura Hannant said there is a lack of relevant educational programming, “not just in Creston, but across the country.” “There is an opportunity in the Creston Valley to capture this new market and become a destination for agricultural education,” Francis said. oswell resident Luanne Armstrong’s memoir, The Light Through the Trees: Reflections on Land and Farming (Caitlin Press), has been shortlisted for the Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize, one of seven prizes presented annually to B.C. authors and publishers at the Lieutenant Governor’s BC Book Prizes Gala. Armstrong, MFA, PhD, is the author of 14 books, and she has worked as a feminist researcher, a freelance journalist and a writing instructor. The Light Through the Trees is a deeply wise reflection on land, farming, a sense of place, connecting with nature and what it means to live on this earth. Town approves market location, will consider possibly becoming city

Creston town council approved the permanent move of the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market to town property adjacent to the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce at the March 12 regular meeting. Approval was recommended by town manager Lou Varela, who also proposed a funding method to ensure adequate water and electricity are available. Some grading and gravelling of the site, as well as dust control in the summer, will also be needed, she said. Funds should come from the Community Development Program funds, which are allocated to regional areas and municipalities by the Regional District of Central Kootenay. In 2011 and 2012, the program funds were used to pay for murals painted in the downtown core. “We now know what an important economic asset the farmers’ market is and moving it to the downtown core, where it will have more visibility, will benefit everyone, including downtown businesses,” she said. Klassen said there are no direct benefits to the designation, but there are costs, including changing legal documents and all signage and stationery. Such a move would require approval of 50 per cent of those voting in a plebiscite, which would also have a cost, he said. Coun. Scott Veitch asked that council consider the issue, saying it was an opportunity to decide how Creston can best market itself for development. “This might be an important message to deliver to developers or investors,” he said. “We have to decide whether we see ourselves as a small rural community or a more dynamic place.” •Mayor Ron Toyota was directed to represent Creston at the presentation of a BC

Mayor follows recycling trail to Spokane BY LORNE ECKERSLEY Advance Staff Creston Mayor Ron Toyota admits to being fascinated with how public systems work — how transportation systems move people around, how water gets from creek to tap, and so on. So it is no surprise that he recently arranged a visit to a new state of the art recycling plant in Spokane. “I’ve always wondered what happens to the bins full of recyclables that are collected by Waste Management three times a month,” he said on Tuesday. “Every once in a while I would get a complaint from someone who heard from someone else that some or all of it just gets taken to the landfill in Cranbrook. Management, one of North America’s largest recycling companies, the SMaRT plant is built to handle about 6,000 tons a month, processing about 11 pounds per second. “The SMaRT plant opens the bales, fluffs them and everything goes into the processing line where the latest technology processes and separates cardboard (different types), paper, metal, glass and plastics,” Toyota said. “These products are then baled and sent out to the different destinations. Glass goes to Seattle. Metal products are sent to U.S. plants. Plastics can go to China or other source locations.” Materials are sorted by a variety of means. Air currents float off cardboard and paper, plastic bags are sucked into

vacuum tubes and hand sorting separates other items into separate streams. Volume is key for recycling sorting operations, the Creston group learned. The contents of 42 green Waste Management bins in the Creston Valley eventually arrive at the SMaRT plant, along with recyclables from southern B.C., Idaho and Washington. Alberta recyclables are also being considered for the Spokane facility. “Another most interesting discussion was Agilyx,” Toyota added, “a company based in Beaverton, Ore., with an operating plant in Tigard, Ore. WM has partnered with this company and its purpose is to extract pure crude oil from waste plastics that are already in our landfill sites. It is an amazing vision and process.”

“With what little we have left.” It was a phrase I heard twice on Monday morning, and one that said volumes about our community. Two speakers used the phrase at a cross-cultural workshop presented by the Lower Kootenay Band. I was one of about two dozen invitees who were engrossed for over three hours as we learned about Ktunaxa history, right back to the Creation Story, culture, language and community. It was as satisfying and moving an experience as I have had in a long time. Kudos once again to Chief Jason Louie for having enough trust in himself and the people around him to reach out to the larger community around Lower Kootenay. Along with his wife, Angie, his band council, LKB chief administrative officer Linda Berg and other residents, Louie did a masterful job of enlightening the audience. The morning started with a brief introduction by Louie and a prayer from band Coun. Anne Jimmie. Then the floor was turned over to Joe Pierre Jr. The son of long time Lower Kootenay resident and employee Joe Pierre and Sophie Pierre, now chief commissioner of the BC Treaty Commission, Joe Jr. has been telling the Creation Story, and about how he learned it, to audiences for more than a decade. Nobody, repeat nobody, who lives in the Kootenays, should not have a chance to hear the legend. It is part of our own history and gives us a much greater appreciation for our geography and natural history. Angie Louie has built up a strong reputation with her health and wellness work. She spoke about the history of the Ktunaxa people before they were “discovered”, she said ironically, by the explorer David Thompson. Of note is the fact that the Ktunaxa were not a nomadic people, with archeological and anthropological evidence of their residing in this area more than 10,000 years ago. The language is a rarity in that it was not blended with or influenced by the language of other tribes.

Once white settlers moved into the region life changed dramatically for the Ktunaxa, and rarely for the better. The fur trade changed the men from being subsistence hunters to economic

They passed a resolution letting the government know that they oppose the section of the letters patent, the legal function to create a municipality, giving Jumbo a seat at the Regional District of East Kootenay without residents. Jumbo’s Council was appointed by the legislature’s strongest opponent to Jumbo Wild, Kootenay East MLA and Minister for Community, Sport and Cultural Development Bill Bennett. Finding no problems with the lack of democracy in all of this, he responded to my questions in the legislature, saying it’s about jobs (to view the exchange, go to www. michellemungall.ca). Use foresight to make good choices To the Editor: We are all born with a sixth sense and gain foresight as we live. We don’t use it or apply it enough each day. We all have choices and use them every day. Easter is coming soon. Does that mean an early spring? Start planting. I can’t help thinking what Easter means. Have you asked yourself what would you have done had you been there when they crucified our Lord? Would you have shouted out with the crowd, “Crucify him”? Would you have feared the lash and yelled out again? Just maybe, would you help carry his cross? Too afraid? Maybe you would go stand by his mother, Mary, and give her support. When you believe in the heavenly Father, that makes Jesus your heavenly brother. You don’t have to go to church to believe, just read your Bible. Jesus lay in the ground three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. That does not make three days, for he was raised up early Sunday morning. In Mark chapters 15 and 16, you will read that one went for spices the day before the Sabbath and one after. Two days between gives us three days. So the Bible does not lie. Writers speak and write; the reader must use his common sense. Think of planting seeds in the spring and the harvest in the fall. Think of Halloween, a really fun night for children to remember. Go to a door, knock and teach your child to say “Trick or treat”, as I did. The door opened and big man, older, said, “Well, who do we have here?” A little voice said, “Trick or treat.” The

big man said, “I have a real one for you,” and hands him a baggie. I looked in and saw seeds of all kinds, and a half-eaten apple core, chewed in someone’s mouth, full of germs. He laughed and I said, “You should be ashamed of yourself, giving children such a dirty trick, spreading germs.” He slammed the door and we threw the seeds on his veranda, and said, “You keep the seeds, apple cores, peach pits, grape seeds and germs. Shame on you!” We didn’t go much farther around the corner toward home, and looked at all our treats and decided we should say “Sweet and treat” hereafter. Look at what happened over the years — lethal objects put in treats to hurt children by real spoilsports using cruelty to teach one dirty tricks. Was common sense used? Do people give parties because they lost trust in a fun night? I’d say someone had no foresight. We do have six senses. Mary Jane Matze Creston

Daylight time could make us healthier To the Editor: Just when you thought the daylight time issue was over and you have many reasons for not wanting to be in synch with the rest of the province and country, here are some interesting facts and benefits to be considered. I am very surprised that environmentally- and conservation-minded people of the area have not picked up on these facts let alone those caring for a healthier life style. The real reason and benefits for daylight savings time

seem to have been long forgotten by Creston and area so here is a short history lesson. Daylight time was introduced by Germany during the First World War in 1916 to conserve energy for the war movement; it was so successful that Britain followed less than a month later. When the U.S.A. entered the war in 1918 it almost immediately brought in daylight time to conserve energy. It was repealed in the U.S.A. after the end of the First World War only to be reintroduced again a month after Pearl Harbor in the Second World War, this time to stay. Over the course of time. this energy saving action has proved to be so successful that daylight time has been extended, not once, not twice, but three times, to now cover eight months of the year. Although I have not found any studies on the health benefits, they could only be positive as more time in the evenings would be spent on outdoor activities like playing ball, golf, any outdoor sport, fishing, cycling, gardening or sitting around a campfire,and the list goes on and on. Even if you’re not an outdoor person there would be one hour more of daylight during your waking hours that you are not using lights. In eight months, this adds up to 240 hours of being active rather than sitting in front of a TV, computer or even reading a book, all of which use electricity and have a negative rather than positive impact on our bodies. The winter days are short enough — why make the summer days short as well? Perhaps instead of daylight time it should be renamed energy saving time. Think about it, folks. It’s your money and your body. I would even go so far as to say it could have an impact on health care costs! Let’s get out and enjoy those beautiful summer evenings for an extra hour. Survey reveals library users’ wants

First, an announcement: The library’s annual general meeting will be held on March 28 at 7 p.m. in the library meeting room. Anybody with a library card is welcome to attend and help elect new board members, hear the latest reports from the librarian and board, and mingle with some of the finest minds in Creston. In January and February, members of the library board and staff hit the streets to ask you what you wanted to see in the library in the future. We received hundreds of responses, and while we are still sorting through the results, here is a preview of some of the things you said: First, despite all of the competition from the Internet, ebooks and all of the other modern gadgets, folks in Creston still love to sit down with a bound and printed book. I just want to say that we love them too, and I can guarantee that a big part of our budget in future years will be spent on good old-fashioned books! Second, you want better furniture and seating areas, preferably a coffee bar, and one person suggested a waterslide. Well, I would personally love to be slipping down a waterslide sipping a latte and reading Jose Saramago but, to be realistic, we are actively exploring options for a coffee bar, and new furniture is definitely on the horizon (yes, when the time comes, we will ask you to help us choose the furniture).

We already provide hands-on computer training, access to free income tax assistance, a venue for local artists, opportunities for youth volunteering, documentary film screenings and much more. In short, we are deeply invested in this community, and we will continue to explore new opportunities and keep listening to your ideas. Lastly, many of you said that we are already perfect, and to just keep doing what we are doing, and to that, all I can say is thank you. We are grateful. A full report of what you said and what we are going to do about it will be presented in our strategic plan 2013-

2015, expected to be completed by June. On a different note, I am proud to announce the start of a new program at the library called the Living Books speaker series. The idea behind this series is that stories and knowledge are not only in books and websites, but also in the people around us. Just as the library provides access to books and websites, we want to provide a venue for these stories and knowledge to be shared throughout the community. Although I am new to Creston, I have had the opportunity to meet some amazing, wonderful and colourful individuals with fascinating stories to tell. On March 16 (already passed, I know), our first “living book”, Jim Smith — a charming, down-to-earth retired forester with a deep respect for the land — told his story. For decades, Jim photographed the natural beauty around him in order to promote a gentler, more holistic vision of forest management. Nowadays, together with his son Howard, Jim specializes in fine art nature photography. His outstanding works have been shown throughout the Kootenays and beyond. In April, we are fortunate to have Rachel Beck, a local herbalist and College of the Rockies instructor. Rachel has an extensive background in natural medicine, and has written for a number of publications about natural health. See LIVING, page 8

New golf pro’s job a family affair

As all local golfers will know by now, Randy Panton has retired as the Creston Golf Club head professional after 29 years of dedicated employment. Members wish him a relaxing, happy retirement.

Experience Phil Thomas Many applications were received to fill the position and after very careful consideration, the selection committee appointed Brian O’Keefe from Shuswap Lake Estate Golf and Country Club near Salmon Arm. Brian has been a Canadian Professional Golfers’ Association professional for the past 27 years, with the unique asset of having his family as pro shop co-workers. His wife, Janet, is a keen golfer with pro shop experience and his two sons, Karson and Kowan, presently attending college on golf scholarships, will be behind the counter during the summer months. Brian’s golfing skill is indeed impressive. As an outstanding junior, age 15, he won the BC Juvenile Championship at Capilano Golf Club and a year later carded his best round to date of 64 (eight under par) at Vernon Golf Club, evidence enough for his career decision. After a year at Oral Roberts University, Brian completed his CPGA apprentice professional training at Rivershore Golf Links in Kamloops. As a professional, he continued his strong play in the ’90s; his most recent

success was in 2002 at Aberdeen Hills Golf Club in Kamloops in the King of the Hill Pro Am with a seven-under-par score. Of course, playing competitively is only a small part of the job, and Brian is well prepared in all areas of this complex position. Golf instruction, pro shop management and merchandizing, customer service and visitor promotion are a few of the areas of expertise he has developed over the years. In addition, his personable, friendly manner will ensure good relationships with all

his co-workers, the club executive, the course superintendent, visitors and, most importantly, members. Brian, a family man first and foremost, lists his interests as hockey and coaching kids sports. He likes to golf socially as well as competitively. We wish a warm welcome to the O’Keefe family, surely a great asset to our golf club and our community. From page 7 More than just a living book, Chief Jason Louie is a living library of local indigenous knowledge. His fluency in the local dialect of Ktunaxa, deep knowledge of Ktunaxa stories and knowledge, and generosity and dedication to traditional ways of life make him an inspiration to the whole community. We are honoured to have him present his story at the library in June. Lastly, I am embarrassed to include myself among this illustrious group, but I will be sharing my story with you in May. As some of you may know, music is a passion of mine, and I have spent a number of years studying various forms of music from around the world, primarily in Korea and India. My talk will focus on understanding North Indian classical music. Last of all, an apology. In my previous column, I erroneously referred to Gordon Lawrence of New Life Church as Gordon Anderson.
