Langley skier’s body pulled from crevasse Vikki HoPeS Black Press
Family, friends and co-workers are mourning the loss of a man described as a passionate outdoorsman who lived life to the fullest. The body of Langley resident Mark Taylor — the general manager of the City of Abbotsford’s parks, recreation and culture department — was recovered by search and rescue crews late Tuesday afternoon in Yoho National Park. Abbotsford Deputy Police Chief Rick Lucy, a close friend, said Taylor has many close, life-long friends who are mourning his loss. Mark The pair met Taylor through their involvement in community matters and learned that they had a common interest in the backcountry. “I was one of the many people who was fortunate to have travelled in wilderness locations with Mark. “He was passionate about the outdoors and knew his stuff. He was a great person who loved living life to the fullest. He will be missed,” Lucy said. Mayor Bruce Banman said the city is devastated by the loss. “The city of Abbotsford has lost a dedicated and loyal public servant. continued, PAGE 7

Tuesday, March 19 marked five years since Kellen McElwee went missing, and his parents are desperate to bring his body home. “You don’t have to identify yourself. We simply want to find his body so we can bury him,” said McElwee’s mother Paula, who along with her husband Len spoke at a press
conference held at RCMP E division headquarters in Surrey on Tuesday. “Try to put yourself in our position. It’s awful. It’s the excruciating pain that no one understands,” she said. “For these five years all we get to do is wonder what happened to our son.” Five years ago 25-year-old Kellen, who grew up in Surrey, went missing after having dinner with friends at the Keg in

Proposed changes for an overhaul to McBurney Lane are one step closer to reality.
Contractor chosen for renovations
BrenDa anDerson Times Reporter
Plans long in the works for a major overhaul to McBurney Lane came a step closer to reality earlier this week. Langley City Council has chosen a contractor to carry out more than $770,000 worth of renovations to the downtown gathering space. But, for now, they can’t reveal who that contractor is. Mayor Peter Fassbender made the announcement during a Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce dinner on Tuesday
night, but because the decision was made during an in-camera meeting of council, no details can yet be made public, explained City CAO Frances Cheung. “We’re hoping to award the contract within the next couple of weeks,” he said The next step, he said, will be to consult with area businesses. “We need to work through the logistics of construction and the access issues with merchants to address any impact (the construction) may have.” Cheung said the work will begin this spring and likely be complete by early June. Planned improvements to the plaza
include new public seating, the addition of green space and installation of a large wooden deck. The design was unveiled at a public open house at City Hall last June, based on feedback from an open house held in the summer of 2011. Originally, several options for improvements had been presented, however it was a proposal to remove all parking from the lane south of the plaza that raised the ire of local merchants. Following the backlash, a plan was selected that retains several parking spaces up the west side of the lane.
Police trying to ID break-in suspect
Langley RCMP is seeking the assistance of the public to identify a person of interest in a break-in at a Langley City apartment on March 11. Police were called that day when the residents of an apartment in the 5600 block of 201A Street returned home to find their door kicked in and apartment ransacked. Police have obtained video surveillance from the building and believe the individual pictured to be a person of interest in this investigation, said Cpl. Holly Marks. If you believe you know who this person is or have information that may assist with this investigation, call Langley RCMP at 604-532-3200. Should you need to remain anonymous call CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
Township providing economic development advice to Vietnamese city Dan Ferguson Times Reporter
The capital city of one of Vietnam’s poorest provinces is getting help from the Township of Langley under an international economic development program. The program, funded by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities and the Canadian International Development Agency, provides expertise from the Township Economic Development Department to Ha Tinh City, a community of
91,000 people in Ha Tinh Province located in the northern part of central Vietnam, about 340 kilometres south of Hanoi. Last week (March 11) Township council approved sending a mission to the Vietnam in mid-April to work on an economic development strategy for the city. That follows a visit last year by a group from Ha Tinh City in July of 2012. The four-person Vietnamese delegation included the secretary of the Ha Tinh City Communist Party and the chairwoman of the
Ha Tinh City People Council. They spent 10 days in Langley, opting to arrive the day before Canada Day, July 1, 2012. A threeperson delegation from the Township spent five days in Ha Tinh City in February of 2012. The goal, a city staff report states, is to use the Canadian community’s planners to help create a development plan “that will capitalize on the unique advantages and assets of the local community within the Vietnam national context.” The report doesn’t mention
many specifics, but one of those Ha Tinh City assets could be a nearby beach that once housed a tourist resort built by the French during their occupation of Vietnam. Much of Thien Cam Beach, located 20 kilometres from Ha Tinh City, was destroyed during the subsequent wars, but it continues to draw foreign visitors. The beach includes the historic Yen Lac Pagoda, which houses a famous set of paintings called “the King of Hell’s Ten Palaces.”

Ha Tinh Province is among the poorest provinces of Vietnam with 1.2 million residents who have an average annual household income of $1,500 to $1,800. The Township staff report said the links between Langley Township and Ha Tinh City could also come to include a co-operation agreement between Ha Tinh University and both Kwantlen Polytechnic University and Trinity Western University that would cover horticulture, nursing and Englishlanguage instruction.

Who is BC NDP leader Adrian Dix? We know quite a bit about Dix’s political history, including his time working as chief of staff under NDP premier Glen Clark in the late 1990s, as well as his more recent work as an MLA, keeping East Vancouver schools from being closed, fighting to reverse the HST and a strong concern for seniors’ rights. But who is Dix when he isn’t criss-crossing the province, shaking hands and giving speeches, in a lead up to the May election? The Times sat down with him on his visit to Langley on Monday to find out. If you could sit down and have dinner with anyone dead or alive, who would it Monique TAMMINGA/Langley Times be and why? Fighting drivers disperse
Whether a fistfight broke out on the side of the freeway at the 264 Street exit on Monday night is not known, say Langley RCMP, but there was a crash. A call came in that a fight was breaking out on the side
of the highway after one vehicle sideswiped another. “By the time we arrived, the only person who remained at the scene was the witness and the two drivers have not called into us to report any fight,”
said Cpl. Holly Marks. “But we do know a collision occurred because there was damage to one vehicle and it appears it may have been a bad lane change, or a vehicle was in a blind spot.”

It was in 2011, when B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix was watching a football game with his parents, that he saw the first B.C. Liberal attack ad on TV about him. “I think it was too soon and it was a mistake on their part,” said Dix, who was the second in the provincial leadership race to speak at a luncheon series organized by the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce at Newlands on Monday. Conservative leader John Cummins spoke on Friday and Premier Christy Clark is set to speak on Monday, March 25. The series is part of an
initiative by the Chamber to increase voter turnout in the two Langley ridings by at least five per cent. “Negative ads turn people off politics. We already have a huge challenge in our democracy today with 71 per cent of British Columbians not turning out to vote,” said Dix. Less than 30 people turned out to hear Dix and roughly the same number turned out to hear Cummins speak. None of the Langley municipal politicians, except for City Councillor Teri James, were present at either luncheon. “What purpose does it serve for me to attack Mary Polak?” questioned Dix about negative campaigning. “We are trying to
change the tone of politics.” Dix doesn’t believe that the younger generations are apathetic, just the opposite. “I think they are very passionate about making this a better world. I think it’s that they don’t believe politics [and politicians] has a role,” he said. Only 53 per cent of eligible voters participated in the last election. Those are registered voters. There were eligible 1.7 million B.C. residents who didn’t vote. “It’s a thin turnout for voting and yet these are the people who are making the big decisions in this province,” Dix said about the provincial government.

After fifty years of good morning and good night kisses...
Mark Taylor remembered as a dynamic leader, quick to smile TAYLOR: from PAGE 1
“Mark Taylor has provided passionate and dynamic leadership in his role ... Mark managed a team of 300 staff and was always quick with a smile and hello for everyone that he came across.” Taylor had been on a five-day ski excursion with his daughter, in her 30s, and a man in his 60s on the Wapta Traverse, located northeast of Golden on the B.C.-Alberta border. Just before midnight last Tuesday, March 12, the trio were caught in a blizzard on the B.C. side of the traverse, and Taylor fell down a crevasse. His companions survived, built a snow cave to stay warm, set off an emergency beacon, and were rescued on Friday, March 15. But continuing harsh weather prevented rescue crews from reaching Taylor until this week.
Omar McDadi, a spokesperson with Parks Canada, said the weather cleared on Tuesday, and two rescue crews made up of a total of seven people were able to get to the scene. Once they entered the crevasse, they came across a “snow bridge” about 15 metres down. This required them to shovel through about six metres of snow before reaching Taylor, who was located at a depth of about 30 metres. “The thoughts of the rescue team and all Parks Canada personnel are with the family,” McDadi said. Taylor had been with the city of Abbotsford for 12 years. Earlier this year, Taylor was an integeral part of the bid that landed Abbotsford the 2016 BC Summer Games. Details on his memorial service have not yet been finalized.

Based on the information gathered to date, police have not been able to make any conclusive links to gangs, drugs or organized crime as being responsible for the disappearance of Kellen. He has no criminal record. On April 2, 2008, Burnaby RCMP released surveillance photos of a man of interest who was inside McElwee’s
condo building at that time. The male in the photos was wearing a winter jacket with a fur-rimmed hood and carrying a DC brand backpack. To date, police have not been able to identify this man and would still like to, said Pound. “Five years is a very long time to hold on to this information and we know that lifestyles can change significantly in this period of time,” said
Pound. “With the change of lifestyle comes better decision making and choices. “We are asking that you make the choice to come forward with information that will allow this family to feel at peace.” Anyone with information is asked to call the IHIT tip line at 1-877-551-4448 or if you wish to remain anonymous call Crimestoppers at 1-800222-TIPS.

Logical eastwest route
W
ith all the speculation about the coming provincial election campaign, little attention is rarely paid to an alarming trend — the rate of voter participation is dropping steadily, and in 20 years, it may be at minimal levels. All this happens as governments at all levels take more and more money from taxpayers’ pockets, and face significant challenges. Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce analyzed these trends and decided to host a series of lunch meetings featuring the leaders of the three major provincial parties, in the run-up to the election. The chamber’s laudable goal is to raise voter participation in the two Langley ridings by five per cent. There have been two luncheons thus far, and attendance at both has been low. Remarkably, even elected officials themselves have stayed away from hearing firsthand from NDP leader Adrian Dix and Conservative leader John Cummins. Only one elected official, Langley City Councillor Teri James, has attended the two meetings. Of course, municipal politicians know all about poor turnout. In the last Langley City election, turnout was just over 20 per cent. In the Township, where there was a hard-fought threeway race for mayor, turnout was only marginally better, at 26 per cent. In the 2009 provincial election, the turnout was just over 50 per cent. As Dix put it bluntly at Monday’s lunch, the BC Liberals were actually elected by 23 per cent of the people eligible to vote, while his party in opposition received votes from just 21 per cent of those eligible. As recently as 1983, 70 per cent of those eligible voted in a provincial election. Dix is correct in diagnosing that an increasing number of young people don’t see any point in voting. Most are not disinterested in the world around them, but they don’t see voting or being involved with a political party as making any real difference. As a result of this disinterest, Dix says elections (and governing) increasingly are reduced to contests between the powerful and the loud, with almost everyone else shunted off to the sidelines. It’s not a good omen for democracy. There must be concerted efforts to get young people to engage in voting. Dix has proposed having 16-year-olds on the voters’ list, so they’re ready to vote at 18. This and other measures need to be looked at as well.

was on my way to Victoria. Surprisingly, and despite the artificially low 50 km/h speed limit along Zero Avenue, it took only slightly more than an hour to reach the toll booths at Tsawwassen. Which made me wonder why it couldn’t be achieved even more quickly, if there was an efficient high-speed southern east-west connector as an alternative to the overburdened Highway 1. After all, the Fraser Valley is the growth centre during the next few decades, and unlike Vancouver which is some 50 km north of the border, Abbotsford and much of Langley is situated right on it. Demand and need for such a route can only increase. And it isn’t just quicker access to the Island ferries that is the issue, but Vancouver International Airport as well. I can’t remember when I travelled from Abbotsford to the airport and didn’t take Zero, 8 or 16 Avenues to get there. Certainly a southern transportation corridor linking the 99 Freeway with Highway 1 in Abbotsford has long been talked about, with 16 Avenue the favourite since it would also provide direct access to Abbotsford Airport. However, that route would mean considerable land acquisition at higher prices, and myriad driveways entering the route or even more space for parallel roads on each side to provide residential/farm access. Zero, on the other hand, has far fewer entryways, and only on the north side. A single parallel road would address access and, for safety purposes, separate the homesites from the high-speed traffic. On the southern side, all that would be needed is a high fence to prevent wildlife collisions, while at the same time make our American friends happy that their country would be more secure from terrorists, drug runners and enterprising Canadians. This route would also provide better access to the border crossings at both Aldergrove and Pacific Highway for cross-border travellers. —Mark Rushton, Abbotsford News The Langley Times is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. Pipelines are much safer today Editor: At last a light in the darkness, an editorial of reason (The Times, March 12). I agree that Enbridge’s public relations regarding the Northern Gateway Project has been an fiasco in the grand style. Can you say “foot in mouth?” The Kinder Morgan proposal appears to be thought out, yet as one who has worked in the oil and gas project industry, the companies need to get information to the public in a manner that can be understood. This is sadly lacking. The current manufacture of line pipe has absolutely no relationship to the pipe of the 1950s and 1960s. API 5L requirements have been upgraded to reflect the concerns of the industry and the public. These specifications are in constant review. There is a project in Alberta that rejected the first group of pipe because one of the chemical elements was miss-
ing. The pipe met all other requirements, yet it was deemed not suitable for the application the end user wanted it for. There is a Canadian firm of note that took the Caspian Sea pipeline calamity as an opportunity to take the technology, improve it and put their company on the line with a guaranty to any user. These upgrades are not done without considering the long-term implications to the public. Canada’s major pipeline contractors have led the industry in safety and environmental procedures. Projects in the recent past that have been problematic have had little or no involvement with Canadian firms, the Caspian problems notwithstanding. Not to appear too cynical, but I often question the motives of the naysayers. These are people who travel utiliz-
ing modern transportation vehicles and equipment. They decry pipelines and oil, but for the most part the negativity is based on “what if.” Who are these organizations that decry the dangers without any hard information and facts, just supposition? In any other situation these groups would be ignored as loonies, baying into the night. When they come up with some hard facts which address the situation, I will listen. If one wanted to take the time to research the supposed problems, an indepth search may turn up a common denominator. I’m for a prosperous, forward-thinking British Columbia.
Editor: Recently, circumstances have come to my attention which cause great concern to me and others who have worked tirelessly for the Langley community for many years. Why does the Township hire experts and then ignore their advice? The medical building in Fort Langley, which complied with heritage guidelines and the OCP, was sent back for redesigning. Do the councillors believe they have more expertise than their paid experts? Why should one developer have his Coulter Berry building passed by council after it failed to meet the OCP and heritage guidelines in Fort Langley? It was not supported by over 80 per cent of the community and was rejected by experts
in heritage. How could the Township and Trinity Western University possibly suggest trading land out of the ALR to assist in the development of a “university district”? How could the Langley Township council approve underground wiring in Fort Langley in order to get rid of historic wires and lampposts, knowing of the devastation the project would cause to the landscaping, sidewalks and trees, let alone the immense cost in money and time? We are in tough economic times and over $4 million is a lot, even in good times. Again, why are the Langley Township councillors making decisions without listening to the people who elected them? It is incomprehensible why the taxpayer
is paying expensive staff and council, if council members have the necessary expertise to decide, plan and ignore the advice they pay for. How could the Township even think of selling any part of any old growth forest, without protecting it from development by having a restrictive covenant put on the entire endangered area? Where is the oxygen coming from for future generations? What will happen to all the wildlife when we crowd them out? I could go on about many other troubling items, but surely we should follow the advice of our experts and try to look to the future. Bays Blackhall, Langley
Terry Brenan, Aldergrove

It’s time to replace Rich Coleman as MLA
Editor: I have been a resident of Langley Township for 10 years. I am definitely not a pioneer, but it’s a respectable term of residency and has allowed me to have formed an opinion about how politicians are not doing their jobs for us. Rich Coleman needs to be replaced. He has had 17 years to get it right and has not done so. I believe he has no interest in helping the citizens of Langley Township getting ahead and actually joining the rest of Greater Vancouver. How can we? We don’t have any way of getting there. This transit set-up is great for the entire GVRD. We pay millions of dollars to support the system, and yet
commuter rail system back on track for us. Check out his web site at www.rickmanuel.com. We need a movement here folks. We need our citizens to start caring and do something. We need voters to get out there and really put some strength and commitment into our community. While I’m on the soapbox, please talk to young people who are eligible to vote. They need to get involved too. Their futures are at stake. If it is important to you, it will be important to them. I love where I live. Let’s make a difference we can all be proud of. Roberta Lee, Langley
Editor: I had to laugh when I heard that councillors noted that there had been no objection from the committees that look over heritage design standards for Fort Langley. This council did not listen to the residents nor the heritage committees or their own planning department when they gave approval to the Coulter Berry Building. There is indeed a double standard in Fort Langley. Even the words of Councillor Charlie Fox “and in a way I’m very gratified that I challenged you” makes it sound as if the new plans were done because of him. Why did none of these councillors, except for David Davis, object to the monstrous Coulter Berry building being forced on the village, against the majority of residents, who said no. I hope that the residents of Fort Langley, Willoughby, and other areas of the Township who are not being listened to by this council remember these serious concerns at the next election. It will be time for certain members of council who have ignored us to finally hear us. Sandra Cameron, Fort Langley
Let’s hear from others
Editor: It shouldn’t surprise me, but yet again I read a letter in your newspaper from David J. Standcumbe. I have lost count, but I suspect The Times has published half a dozen letters from the writer blaming global warming on volcanoes and forest fires. I would like to read what others have to say on the subject. Since we all know where Standcumbe stands on this topic, I would encourage you to publish another viewpoint. D.W. Mather, Langley Editor’s note — Another viewpoint on the topic was published in Tuesday’s letters.

here was some public business conducted in the final frantic days of the B.C. legislature session last week, but you likely wouldn’t have heard much about it. Premier Christy Clark’s skimpy governing agenda was overshadowed by the delivery of an internal investigation report into her government’s ethnic outreach program. A review by four deputy ministers detailed what reporters already knew from a memo and meeting notes leaked to the NDP. The plan started in the premier’s office, led by Clark’s deputy chief of staff, who resigned as soon as it was made public. A BC Liberal Party employee attended the first meeting, expressly intended to organize events to impress immigrant communities, then harvest the goodwill in the form of contact

In a nice bit of symmetry, much of the more than $400,000 was spent to put three-time candidate Gabriel Yiu on the NDP caucus payroll. Yiu’s VancouverFraserview candidate page boasts of his ethnic outreach work, which included tirelessly warning B.C.’s Chinese community about the evils of the harmonized sales tax. In fact, it was the NDP-Yiu operation that inspired a BC Liberal copycat plan. The NDP quietly stopped the budget skimming after Doyle pointed out the blindingly obvious, which is that constituency funds are to serve constituents and are not to be diverted to political organizing. It was kept under wraps by the secretive Legislative Assembly Management Committee. This is the B.C. Liberal-NDP co-managed trough of undocumented MLA expenses and other questionable payments that Doyle has only recently dragged into the light. Both of these schemes have the same stink. Both are intentional abuse of taxpayers’ money for the political gain of the dominant parties. There is no moral high ground for either of them. Two-year property tax hike for TransLink scrapped Jeff Nagel Black Press
TransLink won’t add a temporary property tax increase of $23 per average home that had previously been approved and was to remain in place for this year and next year. Area mayors had OK’d the time-limited tax hike in 2011 as a backup measure
in case new funding sources from the province didn’t materialize, although they fully expected Victoria would deliver. When that didn’t happen, mayors last year indicated by a non-binding vote they wanted to scrap the tax hike, which would have generated an extra $60 million in property tax over 2013 and 2014.
TransLink initially warned last summer removal of the tax could trigger deep service cuts or project cancellations, because it was already struggling with revenue shortfalls, notably a drop in fuel tax collected. Mayors countered late in the fall, vowing to axe the tax increase and blame the province for any service cuts that
ensued if it refused to grant a new revenue source by February. None was forthcoming but TransLink’s board has now agreed to remove the increase, saying enough offsetting money has now been saved through cost cutting. Mayors in Langley, Surrey and White Rock had previously opposed eliminating the property tax
hike, fearing that might torpedo the new Highway 1 express bus over the Port Mann Bridge and King George Boulevard B-Line. Those projects are proceeding, but it will take more money than TransLink now has to fully implement them as originally proposed — higher frequency on the Highway 1 express bus and

extending the King George B-line to White Rock. There’s no money in the budget for other improvements proposed in 2012, including a broader bus service expansion and extending SeaBus service on Sundays and holidays. The regional Mayors’ Council is expected to pass a TransLink-prepared supplemental plan to formally rescind the temporary property tax hike by May 1. Metro Vancouver’s board endorsed the new plan last Friday. Mayors continue to demand new cash sources for TransLink, including a regional sales tax of up to 0.5 per cent, an annual vehicle levy or a share of B.C.’s carbon tax, plus longer-term implementation of comprehensive road tolls.
Despite the latest decision, TransLink’s regular annual property tax increase is still proceeding. Provincial law allows the transportation authority to raise its total property taxes, which have gradually climbed to almost $300 million, by three per cent each year without the mayors’ approval. An owner of a home assessed at the regional average of $712,000 paid more than $230 to TransLink in 2012, while a business assessed at $2 million paid more than $3,000. The bills for each property tend to go up by one to two per cent a year, not the full three per cent, because some growth in TransLink property tax comes from new construction.

Envision Financial wants people to bring confidential documents for shredding in exchange for food bank donations In recognition of national Fraud Prevention Month, Envision Financial is partnering with Iron Mountain and the Langley RCMP to host a free shredding event. People are invited to bring their confidential documents to Envision Financial’s regional office (6470 201 St.) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday (March 23). “Identity theft is a growing concern and shredding confidential document is one of the best ways to protect yourself,” said Lindzee Herring, the senior manager of corporate security at Envision Financial. More than 500 people
attended their two shredding events in 2012. “While identity theft is a reality in our society, it is often a preventable crime,” said Cpl. Holly Marks of the Langley RCMP. “By shredding your personal information, you are taking a proactive approach to avoid being a victim. “As police officers, we see identity theft all too often so we encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity if they are able (to).” The RCMP will be on hand to provide fraud awareness information to the public. Iron Mountain will provide complimentary onsite paper
shredding by donation. “Our partnership with the RCMP and Envision Financial offers Langley citizens piece of mind with secure shredding of their private documentation, environmental stewardship through paper recycling and support of a worthy cause — all of which is positive for our community,” said Jane Banham, the Western Canada director of customer development for Iron Mountain. As part of the event, Envision Financial will be accepting food and cash donations for The Full Cupboard, its newlyannounced community program designed to raise food, funds and awareness for food banks. Through this program, Envision Financial has committed to raising at least $1 million for local food banks over the next 10 years.

Coming home to Polygon’s Red Maple Park By Kerry Vital
Langley is widely considered to be the “countryside” of the Lower Mainland, with a number of equestrian and agricultural areas. Polygon’s Red Maple Park makes living the idyllic country lifestyle easy. “The location is ideal,” says sales manager Judy Rohatyn. “The neighbourhood is nice and quiet. We’ve had so many young families and couples moving in.” Red Maple Park’s convenient location means that there are plenty of shopping and dining opportunities nearby. Willowbrook Mall and the Langley Events Centre are also close, and a new elementary school within walking distance of Red Maple Park will open in the fall. For commuters, this location offers quick access to Highway 1 and the Langley bypass. Red Maple Park offers some of the best value in Langley in a convenient, yet exclusive, setting. The two- and three-bedroom townhomes are spacious and open, with several floorplans to choose from. Homes impress with charming Arts and Crafts architectural details and custom interior design elements. Every home has a large deck or patio, and a yard surrounded by picket fencing, with most homes featuring a tandem double-car garage. “This is an established community,” Rohatyn says, adding that the homes are move-in ready. Inside, natural light flows through large windows and the nine-foot ceilings on the main floor give the

Attractive and durable wood laminate flooring is featured throughout the main level, and kitchens boast stainless-steel appliances, contemporary customcrafted flat-panel cabinetry and luxurious quartz countertops. Master ensuites are spa-inspired with dual sinks, an elegant light bar that illuminates the full-length vanity mirror, countertops with integral backsplash and custom-designed flatpanel cabinetry. And, most homes also include a bathtub with ceramic tile surround in the main bathroom. Another incentive which puts Red Maple Park above the competition is exclusive use of the impressive 8,400 square-foot resort-inspired Maples Club, which features an outdoor pool and whirlpool, fitness studio, guest suites for out-of-town visitors, theatre

Artists combine to get ‘In Spirit with Nature’ When two spiritually driven artists unite their extraordinary talents, the outcome is spectacular and inspiring. “In Spirit With Nature” is a limited edition signature jewelry collection designed in sterling silver and hand carved in a time honoured tradition. In keeping with their instinctive and physical sense of earth, air, fire and water, artists Susan Rind and Sky Phoenix Shanna have brought their passion for spiritual beliefs in a collaboration that stimulates the senses. Shanna has been a freelance artist for 35 years and as a young boy, he lived in Laguna Beach, Calif. where he was inspired by the local art colony and his father Don Hanna. As a teenager he returned to Vancouver to work on his multifaceted skills. During Expo ‘86, Shanna had the opportunity to speak with Haida artist Bill Reid. As Reid sculpted his jade canoe, Shanna was able to ask questions and learn technique. Shanna spent many years studying the forms of totem poles, going to pow wows, listening to elders and learning secrets of a culture that holds a deep and personal meaning to him. In an explosive start to her
25-year anniversary career, bead artist Susan Rind has delved deep into her own spiritual being and her profound appreciation of nature. The past 25 years have seen her evolve from, Fashion Week in New York, sharing a showroom with Dorothy Grant, to interviews with Vogue magazine, book publications and being showcased in Nordstroms. Enthusiasts have appreciated her latest creations with lamp work beads and her artistic renditions with glass. Inspired by the great Dale Chihuly, Rind has been able to see her deep love of nature radiate through her beads. Rind has a gifted talent to bring colour, metal and glass together in a perfect, creative balance. The purpose of these two artist having been brought together is more than evident in the ground breaking jewelry that they have created. Connected through mind and soul, Susan and Sky have collaborated to bring art that invokes the essence of truth, history and future in all people. Every piece in this beautiful exhibit is hand carved and numbered for authenticity. “In Spirit With Nature” is available in a limited quantity to the public at select locations and galleries.

Telus will also fund 30 scholarships for graduating high school players who have demonstrated outstanding citizenship, leadership and academic performance. The announcement was made on March 13, the second day of the B.C. boys AAA high school championships at the Langley Events Centre. Starting in 2014, all four provincial championships will be contested at the LEC. “We recognize the vital role that sports play in the well-being of youth,” Podborksi said. “Telus’ incredible contributions to our community, and in turn, the generation of the future are invaluable to the student-athletes who are fortunate enough to participate in high school basketball in our province,” said BCSSGBA president Brett Westcott. “The Telus sponsorship, and in particular, the scholarships, provides so many opportunities for our studentathletes to pursue a post-secondary education while continuing to play basketball,” added BCHSBBA president Kerry Taylor. Playing in honour of Jordan More than 500 young hockey players hit the ice at the Walnut Grove Sportsplex for the Jordan Owens Memorial Spring Initiation Hockey Tournament. Forty teams of five to eightyear-old hockey players took part in the five-day tournament which celebrates the memory of Jordan Owens. Owens passed away in 1999 at the age of eight after a battle with cancer. The Langley Minor Hockey Association hosts the tournament every March and raises money in honour of Owens, for the B.C. Children’s Hospital. This was the 13th year of the tournament, and last year’s event raised $21,162.81. Altogether, more than $107,000 has now been raised in the tournament’s 12 years. grand prize winners, who will earn $100,000 apiece for their respective hockey association, and a total of 20 second prize winners, who will earn $20,000 apiece. The other $100,000 will go to Hockey Canada to distribute to Learn to Skate programs at the local level. “Through our many years of involvement in community hockey, we realize there are countless unrecognized hockey volunteers and it’s because of them that our favourite sport goes on,” said Jack Hewitt, vice-president of marketing insight and services for Kraft Canada. “There are over four million volunteers who dedicate themselves to ensure the game is played from coast to coast. This year, we’re celebrating these heroes of the
game.” “He spends every waking moment and all his free time coaching kids,” wrote Jesse Fryer in Taylor’s nominating letter. “This may sound like an easy task, but I assure you it is not. “I have watched him sacrifice his entire life for the benefit of these kids, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.” “I listen to the parents talk about him during the games, and they rant and rave about his level of dedication, patience and love of the game,” the letter says. “His energy on the ice is contagious with the kids, and he’s able to bring out the best in his players game after game.” “With a constant smile and ever changing ways to inspire the boys in drills, Coach Steve had made a massive
difference in the ability and confidence of every single team members,” wrote Bernadette Matthew in the nominating letter. “Coach Steve’s leadership and dedication (are) not only bringing hockey to our kids, but inspiring our community, our team, to connect through the game of hockey.” The letter thanks Clauzel for bringing the best out in the players and calls him an inspiration. Eagles end Rivermen run Gary ahuja Times Sports
After holding the high-flying Surrey Eagles to a pair of goals in games one and two combined — and earning a split in the process — the Langley Rivermen could not duplicate the feat on home ice, dropping games three and four to bow out in the first round of the BCHL Fred Page Cup playoffs. The Eagles won 6-2 on Monday and 6-3 on Tuesday at the Langley Events Centre to win the best-of-five series 3-1. Surrey won 2-0 while Langley countered with a 1-0 victory in the series’ first two games, which were played at the South Surrey Arena. Rivermen coach and general manager Bobby Henderson said his team probably deserved a better fate after game one and then stole game two. But when the series shifted to Langley, the high-flying Eagles got their offence on track. “Monday and Tuesday, it was tough for us to get things going,” Henderson said. Also not helping things was the fact Surrey held a significant advantage in power plays, getting five in game three and then nine in game four, compared to Langley’s three and two, respectively. In fact, Viktor Dombrovskiy was whistled for a bench minor even before the game began on Tuesday and 35 seconds later, the puck was in the back of the Langley net. The Rivermen were penalized five times in the first 20 minutes — the final one came at the whistle — and

this may have caused,” Ratcliff said in a statement he released to media. “As a professional athlete, I make every effort to avoid prescription and over-the counter medications that could put me at risk.” The 31-year-old Ratcliff was tied for the Thunder scoring lead with 57 points (26 goals, 31 assists) in a dozen games. And he continued his torrid scoring pace in the Western Lacrosse
Times Sports
Ratcliff said a shoulder injury suffered last fall — which will require surgery following his National Lacrosse League season — led him to acquire a doctor’s prescription for pain medicine in order to get him through the playoffs. “Regarding the performance enhancing substances, I never knowingly or intentionally took any banned substances,” Ratcliff said. “Like many
professional athletes, I am very health conscious, and regularly include nutritional supplements as a part (of) my daily routine and diet. I buy these at the local nutritional and supplement stores in my neighbourhood.” “Unlike the major sports, where knowledge resources are easily available to identify substances that appear on banned lists, in lacrosse we are left to our own resources to stay up

I tested positive due to something I took in a common over the counter supplement.” “We believe Lewis’s statement that his violation was inadvertent,” said Thunder general manager Gerry Van Beek. “We will do what we can to support him; he is part of our family. “We will do whatever we can to help him through this difficult time.” Ratcliff went on to state his opposition to performance enhancing drugs. “I believe that athletic performance and success should be measured by how hard an athlete works on the field and am adamantly opposed to taking any type of performance enhancing substances,”

Ratcliff said. “For me, sport is about pure competition, not about using an artificial substance to get ahead. “I try to live my life as a role model and hope that this can somehow become a learning experience for both me and others to pay closer attention to the food that we eat and the medications that we take in our daily lives. The ban took effect Nov. 10, 2012 and Ratcliff will be eligible to return Nov. 9, 2014. Ratcliff, who lives in Redmond, Wash., also plays for the NLL’s Washington Stealth. His suspension does not affect his status in that league. Through the season’s first dozen games, Ratcliff has 22 goals and 47 points, both of which are second on the team.
