Foul play not suspected in woman’s death BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN
Foul play is no longer suspected behind the death of a woman whose body was found in Lantzville early Tuesday. Nanaimo RCMP and B.C. Coroner’s Service conducted their investigation of the scene on Peterson Road, a quiet residential street in Lantzville where the woman’s body was found lying beside the
road between Lantzville Road and Lynn Drive. Sgt. Sheryl Armstrong, Nanaimo RCMP spokeswoman, said because the area where the woman was discovered lies outside Nanaimo city limits and outside the jurisdiction of Nanaimo RCMP’s municipal force, provincial RCMP investigators were brought in from Victoria. Investigators from Nanaimo and Victoria were on scene until just after 11 a.m. when the body

was removed. They determined foul play was not suspected in the woman’s death. “Investigators have been on the scene and at this time it’s believed it’s going to be turned over to the coroner’s office as foul play is no longer suspected,” Armstrong said. The B.C. Coroner’s Service is continuing its investigation into the death. photos@nanaimobulletin.com
Gabriola RCMP continue to investigate why a vehicle sped through closed gates at B.C. Ferries’ Descanso Bay terminal on Gabriola Island, launched off a raised ferry access ramp, landed on the deck of the docked MV Quinsam and continued until it plunged into the ocean early Wednesday morning. Police received 911 calls just after 3:45 a.m. and were on scene within a few minutes, but there was no sign of the vehicle or anybody who may have been in it. Requests for Canadian Coast Guard and Nanaimo Harbour Patrol assistance were immediately made and a coast guard hovercraft arrived on the scene at 4:54 a.m., according to an RCMP press release. The vehicle is believed to be immersed in more than 50 metres of water, too deep for RCMP divers, so navy divers were called for assistance. As of press time Wednesday afternoon, divers had yet to locate the vehicle, its driver, or any potential occupants.

A barrier at the terminal was destroyed and the Quinsam sustained minor damage but is operational. It remains tied at its berth for the duration of the police investigation, according to a B.C. Ferries official. B.C. Ferries provided foot passengers with a water taxi to transport them between Gabriola Island and the Nanaimo Harbour, and vehicle traffic has been halted during the investigation. A similar incident took place in May 2011 at B.C. Ferries Swartz Bay terminal when an agitated customer suddenly accelerated his vehicle to 80 km/h from his place in line, charged at the barriers blocking Berth 1, and plunged into 10-metre deep water. Divers recovered both the driver’s body and vehicle. For the latest updates on this story, please visit our website at www.nanaimo bulletin.com. businesses. “It’s a lot of money going to local businesses. It’s fantastic,” he said. Joan Millar, Vancouver Island North regional film commissioner, said about 300 crew members will come to the city for the shoot in downtown Nanaimo. And while the filming is being done in Ladysmith the crew will be staying in Nanaimo hotels because there isn’t enough capacity in Ladysmith. “This is rare for us,”
said Millar about having a film shot in a downtown location on the Island. She said if a film wants a downtown look it would usually shoot in the Vancouver area. The economic development office was contacted about four months ago about filming locations for the movie. The development office works closely with InFilm to find suitable locations. “You want to make sure you are film

About $2.6 million in repair and renovation projects will take place at Nanaimo school district facilities over the next year. Trustees gave preliminary approval last week to a list of projects developed by the facilities department. The projects will be paid for using the annual facilities grant, a special fund the province gives to districts for building maintenance work. Big ticket items that take place at more than one school include $125,000 worth of flooring replacements, $750,000 in roof replacements, $100,000 for exterior painting and $125,000 toward the non-structural seismic program – securing items such as light fixtures, shelving and pictures that otherwise might move during an earthquake. Major projects at individual schools include $100,000 to replace the Strathmore Street parking lot at Woodlands Secondary School; $200,000 for a boiler upgrade and exterior wall repairs to stop a water leak at Pleasant Valley Elementary School; and $300,000 for additional working space at both the facilities building and district administration centre. Pete Sabo, the district’s director of planning and operations, said one-third of the $300,000 will be used to turn some of the warehouse space in the facilities building behind the administration centre into a meeting room because staff have had to use space in other buildings. With the remaining $200,000, the district wants to add space at the administration centre for information technology staff to prepare and fix computers because the space at NDSS that IT staff currently use is no longer adequate. Sabo said staff are looking into adding a portable or two for this purpose because the administration centre is full.

Sasha Angus, chief executive officer for the Nanaimo Economic Development, said the film industry is important and when a large movie production comes to town it means a lot of money is infused into the local economy. He said it could mean hundreds of thousands of dollars a day going into the Nanaimo economy. The film crews often hire local catering companies, fill hotels and motels and rent equipment from local

Instead of laying waste to Tokyo, Godzilla is making his way across Vancouver Island. The Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla movie is filming in downtown Nanaimo, as well as Ladysmith and Shawnigan Lake, this week. Depending on the weather there are several Nanaimo locations the crew may choose. Witnesses in the area said they saw film setup occurring on View and Seventh streets in south Nanaimo, Douglas Avenue, in Harewood, and Victoria Crescent near the Cambie. The movie, directed by Gareth Edwards, stars Aaron TaylorJohnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen and Juliette Binoche. The screenplay was written by Max Borenstein, Frank Darabont and Dave Callaham.
friendly,” said Angus. In 2006 the City of Nanaimo ended its support of the Nanaimo Film Commission and refused to contribute to InFilm. Angus said the economic development corporation is looking into whether it will work with the commission in the future to promote Nanaimo as a filming location. Millar said she’s encouraged by the conversations she’s had with the corporation because the film commission is a notfor-profit that works hard to promote Island locations to the film industry. Angus said he’s a fan of the Godzilla movies. “I have a four year old so I can’t wait to see it on the big screen and see his face when the monster comes rolling around,” said Angus. He said it’s great for the Nanaimo community and for people who watch the movie to recognize locations from their home town. Godzilla is expected to open in theatres May 16, 2014, and be presented in 3-D.

An environmental course developed by Dover Bay Secondary School teachers could get the green light at the end of the month. T r u s t e e s at t h e March 6 education committee meeti n g re c o m m e n d e d the board give final approval for the locally developed course. Environmental Stewardship, a Grade 11 course, was developed by three Dover Bay teachers – Gordon Graham, teacher sponsor of the school’s environmental club, John Eby and Janet Nelson. On top of introducing students to the principles, concepts and methodologies required for understanding the complex inter-relationships of the natural world, the course aims to get students to think critically about contemporary issues related to environmental problems, on both a local and global scale and get them thinking about solutions. thinking about developing an environmental stewardship course for some time, and teachers hope to get enough interest to run at least one class next fall. “It is, in my view, one of the most important issues kids are going to deal with in the 21st century,” he said. “It is sort of everywhere. The idea that we can’t keep going on like we have in the past, that message has to get out. “T here’s lots of opportunities where kids can get out in the community and get involved.” The course, which can be offered at any high school in the district once approved, introduces students to environmental sustainability and stewardship, examines the impact of environmental change on the planet’s natural systems and the relationship between the human world and natural world, and allows students to choose their own topics for deeper study in the contemporary environmental issues unit. Students also explore solutions and actions – both existing solutions and ones they create themselves. “The whole idea is for them to consider e nv i ro n m e n t a l ly responsible practices,” said Graham. Students will learn to calculate their carbon footprint and a large part of the course is completing learning journals and working with peers on presentations and group projects. “A lot of [course material] is going to be dealt with around the students and their presentations,” said Graham. Jamie Brennan, school board chairman, said the project is in keeping with the province’s focus on personalized learning and there was unanimous support for the course. “It’s really sort of natural because of the work teachers and students have done at that school through the environmental club,” he said. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

Cancer society needs volunteers
I
DAFFODIL MONTH kicks off in April.
BY CHRIS HAMLYN THE NEWS BULLETIN
Time is a valuable commodity and the Canadian Cancer Society is hoping Nanaimo and area residents have some to spare. The society kicks off its 75th annual door-to-door Daffodil Month campaign April 1, and Sue Carlson, Nanaimo/ Ladysmith campaign coordinator, is in desperate need of canvassers. “Getting enough canvassers is always a concern each year, but this year it’s a major concern,” she said. “We need people to phone, people to go door-to-door … we just need help.” The daffodil campaign is a major fundraiser alongside the Relay for Life and Tour de Rock Cops for Cancer. Money raised in the community
stays in the community for research and support services for those living with cancer. “The campaign is the one way to meet face-to-face with people and tell them how they can get the help and information,” said Carlson, a cancer survivor. “So many of the people who canvass have lived with cancer and therefore are giving back. It allows others to talk to people who have been there.” There are no parameters on the amount of volunteer time required. Carlson said they will take anything anyone can give. “If someone only has a couple of hours to offer between the first and thirtieth of April we would love it,” she said. “If someone can take a kit to their work or put up a notice in a multifamily dwelling it’s another opportunity for the public to give. “ Carlson said they are trying to reach all communities in the society’s service area.
“There might not be a Canadian Cancer Society office in a community, but services are still provided,” she said. Anyone wanting to help can call 250-7418180, e-mail midislandd2d@bc.cancer.ca or drop by the cancer unit at 777 Poplar St., next to the News Bulletin.
The society’s doorto-door canvass campaign is also short of volunteers in Nanoose. Those not comfortable knocking on doors can also take part in online canvassing. For more information, please call Hugh Baker at 250-468-1820.

About a hundred people attended an information session on the Boundary Crescent social housing project last week. Construction is expected to begin this summer on a four-storey, 41-unit supportive housing project at 1597 Boundary Cres., to be developed and operated by three local non-profit organizations: Nanaimo Affordable Housing Society, Columbian Centre Society and Haven Society. Nanaimo Affordable
Housing will build, own and maintain the building, Columbian Centre will provide 24-hour housing support workers and Haven will provide an additional layer of services on the floor of the building dedicated to women fleeing violent situations. At the open house on Wednesday, residents were shown the building designs and all three organizations made themselves available for questions. Jim Goldsack, acting president of the Hospital Area Neighbourhood Association, said on the whole, he thinks the neighbourhood is now happy with the plans. While the association was originally one of the most vocal opponents, he believes it started turning around when a portion of the land was sold to R.W. Wall Ltd. to develop a medical centre that includes lots of parking – one of the major issues in the area is a lack of parking. Goldsack said residents were provided with detailed answers to all their questions at the information session. “They weren’t vague answers, they were very pointed answers and that explained it perfectly,” he said. “It made a whole lot of difference to the neighbourhood with that open house. These people know what they’re doing.” Residents now have a very different picture of who is going to live there, Goldsack added. The Boundary social housing project is part of a partnership between the province and the city to help address homelessness. Spinelli said the association is close to finalizing the design and the project is expected to cost between $8 and $9 million. “We hope to be in the ground sometime this summer and hopefully open by the fall of 2014,” he said.

of the roughly 100 people who showed up throughout the four-hour information session, he didn’t hear from many who were extremely opposed to the project – most simply seemed curious to find out more. “I’m sure there’s still people who would still rather not have it in their neighbourhood,” he said. “But on the other hand, there was not a lot of animosity from the crowd. I think they were curious to see what was going to happen.” The intent is to provide safe, secure and stable housing for single adults who are homeless or at risk of being homeless who would benefit from the services provided as well as single women fleeing domestic or street violence. While there will be tenants with mental health issues and/or addiction issues, the facility has round-theclock staffing and tenants are expected to abide by strict rules, said Spinelli. “They know that if they are good tenants and they pay their rent, they will be able to stay there,” he said, adding that people who don’t want to make use of the services or are into criminal activities don’t generally want to stay in a place where staff know what they are doing 24 hours a day. “Usually when people get heavy into street drugs, they get evicted,” said Spinelli. “Everybody will be on a fixed income.”

Inbrief Citizens hope wetland report stops development city scene
Coroner names accident victim The B.C. Coroners Service has identified a man who died in a dirt-biking accident near Nanoose Bay on the weekend. Mark Lionel John Arsenault, 55, of Nanaimo, was riding a dirt bike on a logging road near Nanoose Bay Sunday at about 11 a.m. when he lost control of the bike and crashed. Arsenault, who died at the scene, was found by friends he was riding with. His family has been notified and the B.C. Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate this death.
Man suffers injury in fire One man was treated in Nanaimo Regional General Hospital for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in the basement of his home. The blaze broke out about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in a home at 144 Acacia Ave. in central Nanaimo. Rick Kwasnecha, Nanaimo Fire Rescue fire prevention officer investigating the fire Wednesday morning, said fire damage was contained to one room and its contents, but there was smoke damage throughout the residence. Kwasnecha was in the initial stages of his investigation and had not determined the cause of the fire. “The occupant was taken to hospital last night for smoke inhalation and was released sometime this morning,” Kwasnecha said. The man was the sole occupant of the home.

LINLEY VALLEY developer keen to keep sensitive areas safe in proposed housing construction.
BY TOBY GORMAN THE NEWS BULLETIN
Armed with a newly completed bio-inventory and conservation assessment, a group of citizens is determined to put a wrench into a proposed 352unit housing development in Linley Valley West, a parcel of land it says has too high of a biodiversity and conservation value to develop. Save Linley Valley West revealed its report titled Baseline Bio-Inventory and Conservation Assessment for Linley Valley West, prepared by biologist Joe Materi, Tuesday in front of one of the beaver ponds in the valley. The extensive report notes that at least 66 bird species, including hummingbirds, owls and woodpeckers, redlisted amphibians and reptiles, and mammals like cougars, beavers and deer, were observed on at least one of four land parcels prone to development. It also empha-
city’s property assessment report, the site of the proposed development, 5701 Vanderneuk Rd., was assessed at $972,700 in 2006. In 2010 it was assessed at $3 million and in 2012 it was valued at $4.5 million. Seventy-three hectares of Linley Valley West property is owned by Mount Benson Enterprises, which has submitted the development permit application. The land value jumped considerably in 2008 as well when, with a revised official community plan, the city included Linley Valley in its urban containment boundary for the first time despite protests from the public. Development in the area has become a reality, with extensive housing projects beginning to leach into the park from several directions except for the eastern portion, where the city secured 58 hectares in 2002 to designate as park. Lamont Lands has already developed a significant portion of Linley Valley West just off Rutherford Road.
sized that the land in its natural state provides “habitat connections between lakes, wetlands and adjacent forest patches that are key to persistence of native amphibians and mammals and intact connections for a variety of wideranging wildlife.” In total, 81 hectares in the valley is zoned for development. Jennifer O’Rourke, spokeswoman for Save Linley Valley West, said a new zoning bylaw introduced by the city in 2011 paved the way for densification of single family dwellings on the property, resulting in a 30-per cent increase in land value and greater profits for the developer. “It also allows for steep slope development,” she said. “The official term is bare rock but if you look at the bluff, it is anything but bare rock. There is a diverse ecosystem there with birds, trees and plants.” According to the

Norman Blattgerste, owner of Mount Benson Developments, said his own environmental report contains similar information as Save Linley Valley West’s, and that the development he is proposing is respectful of the ecosystem. “We’re leaving all of the wetlands alone, we’re not touching them, we’re working according to aquatic setbacks, and we’re not asking for any amendments when it comes to the zoning,” said Blattgerste. “I want to leave environmentally sensitive areas alone, it’s very expensive to deal with these areas, and these are important amenities in these areas. There is value in leaving as much natural as possible.” He added he’s met members of Save Linley Valley West several times and admits he’s a little confused by what they want. “It’s obvious they want to preserve it and not have any development at all there,” he said. “They’ve even mentioned they want to buy it but so far there haven’t been any offers.”

Save Linley Valley West is hosting Rally for the Valley at 2 p.m. on Sunday (March 24) at the end of Alta Vista Drive to bring awareness to its concerns. Last year, Save Linley Valley West approached city council asking if there would be consideration toward purchasing the land to designate it as a park. Council agreed to search for funding mechanisms, but quickly reversed its decision after a strongly-worded letter from Susan Cudahy, former executive director of the Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation, suggesting the city wasn’t legally able to downzone property for its own benefit. Blattgerste added
that new zoning in Nanaimo allows for better infilling and use of designated urban space to reduce the pressure on urban sprawl. “This will be clusters of dense development set in amongst the plants and environment so people can live in that kind of environment. We’re not the [Lamont Lands] development beside us. The backdrop of nature will be right there ... and I’m surprised the people of Save Linley Valley West won’t support this because we’re trying to stop development from occurring on the outskirts of the city.” The development permit is still in its early stages and not yet ready to go before city council.

Film industry still growing g g The cult following attached to Godzilla movies just got a little bigger in Nanaimo, thanks to filming of the latest installment in the Harbour City this week. The city’s south end and downtown played host to crashed helicopters and torpedoes strapped to railcars, with local actors and film enthusiasts on set as extras for the multi-day shoot. It’s one of just a handful of films that have been shot in Nanaimo over the past few years – the teen drama franchise Twilight features scenes shot around Nanaimo River. Movies can be economic drivers for areas lucky enough to be showcased in big budget flicks. Film crews descend on the city, gobbling up food at local restaurants and shacking up at hotels. Permits are paid for the privilege of shooting. The beauty and charm of a location is also included in that package – one that can have even more of an impact than the workers employed. Tourism numbers in New Zealand after filming of the Lord of the Rings trilogy can attest to that. Nanaimo Economic Development Corporation and Island North Film Commission, both of which worked closely with a production company to secure the shoot, have been at odds in the past over financial contributions to the nonprofit to support its work to secure filming on the Island. Seeing the start of a new working relationship between the two is yet another positive aspect. But one film does not an industry make. Questions still remain about the overall value of the film industry and whether Nanaimo will reap benefits for any financial contribution to InFilm. It’s exciting to see our beloved city showcased on the big screen. But we don’t yet know if our love affair with the film industry will end as an inspirational, feel-good drama or a gruesome horror show. 2010 report by Auditor General John Doyle, which condemned a five-year program of skimming money from NDP constituency office budgets all over the province and using it for political work. In a nice bit of symmetry, much of the more than $400,000 was spent to put three-time candidate Gabriel Yiu on the NDP caucus payroll. Yiu’s VancouverFraserview candidate page boasts of his ethnic outreach work, which included tirelessly warning B.C.’s Chinese community about the evils of the harmonized sales tax. In fact, it was the NDP-Yiu operation that inspired a B.C. Liberal copycat plan. The NDP quietly stopped the budget skimming after Doyle pointed out the blindingly obvious, which is that constituency funds are to serve constituents and are not to be diverted to political organizing. It was kept under wraps by the secretive Legislative Assembly Management Committee. This is the B.C. Liberal-NDP co-managed trough of undocumented MLA expenses and other questionable payments that Doyle has only recently dragged into the light. Both of these schemes have the same stink. Both are intentional abuse of taxpayers’ money for the political gain of the dominant parties. There is no moral high ground for either of them. ◆ Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

School closure issue flies under community’s radar To the Editor, In December 2012, the trustees of Nanaimo school district passed a motion accepting a draft strategic plan. This plan implies a number of significant changes throughout the district, specifically around what has been identified as “optimal school size” for maximum facility and staffing efficiency. It identifies student populations of 200 to 400 at the elementary school
level, and 600 to 1,200 at the secondary school level as being optimal. While the overall metrics of the plan seem sound at first blush, the lack of common sense becomes quickly apparent. The school district has to address facility use (potentially closing schools) where the specified minimum student population of 200 cannot be supported by either the existing facility or the surrounding com-
munity. This may displace students to what has previously been referred to as “adjacent schools,” many of which are already operating over capacity – in some cases, this displacement will also require the district to absorb the cost of new bus routes to transport displaced children daily from their home catchment areas. The plan then further outlines that pursuant to the district’s newest
catch-phrase, “success for all,” the remaining facilities will be updated to support a modernized approach to education, suited to this new era of technological immersion. While new facilities, customized education, and equal access to programs sounds like every parent’s wish list for the public education system, there is one rather large fly in this ointment. The district must achieve all of the above on a reduced budget.
It doesn’t take an accounting degree to see the impossibility of spending less money while offering new and updated facilities, individualized learning plans (that will be inherently time intensive for teaching staff), and absorbing new transportation costs. In light of the magnitude of changes coming to the district following this plan, I am stunned the proposed changes to the 2013-14 school cal-
endar have been widely publicized, while the details of this strategic plan have been kept largely quiet. Perhaps if the community were aware of the proposed changes, the trustees would be forced to examine the realities of this strategic plan rather than blindly pushing forward and hoping the numbers will magically add up all on their own. Readers respond: Feedback on news items Demolition of theatre the practical solution To the Editor, Re: Council approves $160,000 ffacelift for Centre Stage, March 14. As much as I love theatre, the Nanaimo Centre Stage building was too old to begin with and council of the day erred in purchasing it. It is indeed nothing but a black hole and council should not even consider spending more of the taxpayers money. Perhaps we should consider tearing it down and then fund-
raise for a brand new venue. Although more expensive in the long term, that is the only practical solution. Eleanor Miller Nanaimo
Idea of Island bridge simply out of reach To the Editor, Re: Island dwellers need a bridge, March 14. The P.E.I. Confederation Bridge was part of a constitutional deal. It took 120 years to be realized, it’s 12.9 kilometres long and the
sea is about 35 metres at the deepest. It was built from 1993-96 for $1.3-billion and the toll for a twoaxle car is $44.50 this year return. The toll is only a small portion of the overall maintenance budget. Without the federal government, the toll would be $110 return. A bridge from Vancouver Island to B.C.’s mainland would be more than three times as long and in water at its deepest of 156 metres. So the bridge would be also about three times taller. If we could engineer it, the bud-
get would probably more than $10 billion. The bridge maintenance budget would exceed current ferry fees. Reduce the experience to a single point crossing, take in the pollution and add an earthquake threat, and me thinks we shelve the silly idea. Victor Blazevic Nanaimo
Low-income residents can use a LEAP card To the Editor, Re: Exercise costs are prohibi-
tive, Letters, March 14. If L.A. Jones is in a lowincome bracket, he or she is eligible to receive a LEAP card that provides 50 free visits to the gym at Beban Park. After that the costs are much cheaper. I hope this is of some help. I don’t know why the costs went up twice to $5 for the gym. That is a terrible cost increase and Nanaimo’s city council should do something about it. Donna Nordstrom Nanaimo

sively manage the cumulative impacts of multiple resource industries operating within the same area. Because of this, WCEL and its First Nations partners are engaged in a multi-year law reform project that aims to overhaul the way we currently oversee and regulate cumulative impacts, ranging from declining water quality that may arise as a result of multiple industries using a common resource to emerging threats such as climate change. A cumulative-impacts approach to governing resource development would upend the current management paradigm. It would focus on the management needs of the land, water, air and wildlife and the communities that depend on them first, rather than the resources to be extracted. In practical terms, this would mean that rather than focusing on what we should take from nature to create wealth and employment, we should first consider what must be retained in nature to sustain both wildlife and the well-being of local communities – such as clean air, safe drinking water and healthy local food. We need to look at the big picture rather than individual elements in isolation.

Folk icon counts himself lucky to pursue music BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN
C
anadian folk icon Valdy considers himself lucky. “I’m doing something that I love, which makes it all worthwhile,” he said. “I consider myself very fortunate. I don’t take it for granted.” Valdy, Valdemar Horsdal, was born in Ottawa. His career has spanned more than three decades and he’s received two Juno awards, Folk Singer of the Year and Folk Entertainer of the Year, as well as seven Juno nominations and four gold albums. Last year he was made a member of the Order of Canada. “It was a wonderful event and I pinch myself every once in a while to say why me,” he said. But the singer/songwriter is humble about his accomplishments and acclaim. “It’s a matter of hanging in there enough so people notice,” he said. The musician’s inspiration for songs is all over the map. Valdy said he finds humorous or ironic situations and writes about them. Or sometimes he writes about something in his life. The folk singer is performing in Nanaimo Saturday (March 23)

at 8 p.m. at St. Andrew’s United Church. During the Nanaimo concert Valdy will perform songs from his newest album Read
Between the Lines as well as some old fan favourites. Vancouver Island musician Ryan McMahon opens for Valdy.
He also opened for him almost five years ago. “He was funny, amazing and completely engaging and a leg-
end,” said McMahon. McMahon said he jokes around with himself that his career has spanned 15 years and he is still the opening act. But he said he loves the opportunities to meet musicians he admires. “It’s afforded me a unique opportunity to meet a lot of different people,” he said. “I love meeting these guys that have already been there. There is a lot of knowledge for someone to impart.” McMahon said he has to force the “creative machine” off when he is out doing activities like hiking or enjoying family time. Instead he makes a date with himself and goes to his studio and tries to write. He said he has to see during that time if it is a good time to write. He tries writing and if nothing comes he doesn’t force it. “I have to see if I have anything to say. If I don’t the muse isn’t there,” said McMahon. “Songs are gifts that somehow visit themselves upon you and you have to strike while the iron is hot.” Tickets for the Saturday performance are $23 in advance by calling 250-754-8550, at the Port Theatre box office, located at 125 Front St., or www.porttheatre.com or tickets are $25 at the door. arts@nanaimobulletin.com
Savage in Limbo explores people’s decisions to change their lives THE NEWS BULLETIN
Denise Savage is stuck in a rut. She lives with her mother and doesn’t do much in life except go to work and go home. Her hobbies consist of staying home and reading a good book. But one day the 32-year-old virgin decides it’s time to change her life. “Denise is a very intelligent woman who has been living a narrow life, living with her mother who is a shut-in,” said actress Bonnie Catterson. “She is incredibly hungry for change and realizes she needs to change
her life, but she is terrified.” Denise Savage is the main character in Savage in Limbo, written by John Patrick Shanley. Western Edge Theatre Company is producing the play as its last offering of the season. Catterson said the characters in the play are “stuck in the roles they have carved out for themselves.” “They fight for change. There are some definite shifts,” she said. Denise Savage is a role Catterson has wanted to take on for about 10 years because she finds the character very interesting. Savage is strong and fierce and says whatever comes into her

Eliza Gardiner, Western Edge’s artistic director, said the play is “fast moving” and the actors have been doing a fabulous job discovering the motivations and feelings for each character. The dialogue is also very relatable, she added. “This writer (John Patrick Shanley) is particularly astute at writing crisp familiar dialogue. in the throat cause snoring, also interrupted breathing and gasping for air (sleep apnea), which brings on being tired all day, need for napping, high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks, irregular heart beat. Read below how Bell helps thousands, usually first night, inexpensively, with no side effects. Greatly improves quality of life and saves marriages. Survey says 48% snore and 75% are suffering if you include the silent suffering partners. To T my surprise, after taking BellSound Sleep #23 I really didn’t snore or gasp for air anymore. I sleep through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. Ma M rk r Wilson, 40, Wi 0 Hu H ds d on, NH N Sleep apnea capsules worked first night! For last 15 years I had sleep apnea and my doctor made me buy a CPAP machine, which I could not use. Finally Bell #23 helped the first night and every night thereafter. Like a miracle. Unbelievable. Ka K re rn Bra r un, 67, 7 Gla l ce Ba Bay, NS N For 20 years I was waking up frequently gasping for air. During the day I would start napping every time I would sit down, because I was tired. Since #23 taking Bell #23 sleeping 6 hours is heaven. It made a substantial change in my life. Ma M ry r C. My Myrick, k 62 62, Ja J cks k on, MS M It is such a joy not having to use the CPA P P machine. I have had sleep apnea for 10 years. Using Bell#23, my wife says there is no more snoring or stoppage of breathing. It is such a joy to be able to roll to left or right with no hose or mask to deal with. Thank you Bell for a great relief. I suggest anyone with these problems to try it. You will be overjoyed with the results. Wayne Burs Wa r e, 63 63, Beamsvi ville l , ON. N Lost my husband because of sleep apnea in 2011. I had sleep apnea, too. I was scared to go to bed and have an heart attack like my husband. After taking Bell #23 I can now sleep for 5-6 hours peacefully without gasping for air. A blessing. Suz uzie We W ig i el,l 60, 0 Chattttanooga g , TN TN.

Rabbit tale takes the stage BY RACHEL STERN THE NEWS BULLETIN
A velveteen rabbit that is at first snubbed for newer and shinier toys eventually becomes a favourite companion for a child. Through love and devotion to the small boy, the toy eventually transforms with the help of the Nursery Magic Fairy. Kathryn Popham, a performing artist with Erewhon Theatre, is bringing the story to life with the help of 10 children as part of TheatreOne’s Just Kidding Series this Saturday (March 23) at 1 p.m. at Vancouver Island University’s Malaspina Theatre. Popham said the tale appeals to children and adults alike and the work is meant to be read aloud. “It’s unusual to have such a sophisticated story (for a children’s
book),” she said. The Velveteen Rabbit was written by Margery Williams. The 10 children will play the parts of the nursery toys. They will learn and rehearse their roles about half an hour before the performance. The children’s participation is meant to help them access their imaginations and creativity in a positive environment. Popham said children are wonderful to work with because they listen to the instructions carefully and she finds as long as they perform shortly after learning their lines they retain the information. “Kids are just fine with all of those things. They come to it naturally,” said Popham. “A lot of the fear and inhibitions come later when people grow up.” The remaining char-

acters are played by Popham who uses an assortment of masks and puppets to create the story. Popham said while she wants people to laugh and be entertained she also wants people to be drawn into the story and really listen to the tale. “It’s great for all ages – adults will like it too,” she said about the performance. Tickets are two for $14 and are available by calling 250-754-7587 or online at www.the atreone.org. arts@nanaimobulletin.com

NEW CHAPTER
Water falls from the sky in Nanaimo in bucket loads during the spring. But accessing that water isn’t always simple. There are issues that impact watersheds on Vancouver Island and these issues are examined in Nanaimo filmmaker Paul Manly’s newest documentary Troubled Water. There is a special screening of the film on World Water Day Friday (March 22). The film examines threats to public water systems and watersheds on Vancouver Island, privatization and public and private partnerships, vulnerable aquifers, ground water contamination and international trade agreements that could threaten the security of public water systems. It also explores the issue of public ownership and the fundamental human right to access clean drinking water and includes examples of successes other communities have achieved. The film is free to attend and there are two screenings, 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., at Vancouver Island University in Bldg. 200 Rm. 203. After the shows there will be a discussion about local water issues.

Hockey League playoffs. Nanaimo had built a two-g ames-to-none series lead, but Alberni won both its games over the hump, winning 4-1 on Monday and 3-2 on Tuesday. In Tuesday’s Game 4 the Clippers carried much of the play but the Bulldogs built a lead on two power-play goals and were able to hang on. “They scored on their power play and we didn’t. That’s probably the biggest factor in the series, to be honest,” said Mike Vandekamp, Clippers coach. “Five-onfive we had a fair chunk of the play – we outshot them; we created a lot of scoring chances for ourselves. “We had a bad bounce on the penalty kill on one play, but you’ve got to take advantage of your bounces at the other end, too.” The Clippers outshot the Bulldogs in every period and ended up with a 41-26 edge in that category. It’s a new season and there’s a ballpark full of possibilities for the VIBI Mariners. Nanaimo’s Vancouver Island Baseball Institute team steps up to the plate Saturday (March 23) for the start of the Canadian College Baseball Conference season. The M’s have played in three-straight national finals, winning it all in 2010, and they will put another strong entry on the field for 2013. “It is definitely our plan to be in contention when the big games come around and play well in those big games,” said Jordan Blundell, VIBI manager. But the focus now is on the present, which is Saturday’s season opener at Serauxmen Stadium against Lethbridge, Alta.’s Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs. “They were the champs last year; it’s always fun to open up against them, see where we stand,” Blundell said. “We’ll be ready to go.” The M’s got in a lot of game action in spring training and won two out of three last weekend in exhibition play. “We’re playing good ball right now, everything’s kind of coming together,” said Reiley Grose, VIBI pitcher. “The pitching’s been strong and the bats are coming alive – it’s good timing, to happen now.” ◆ See ‘VIBI’ /B3
◆ GAME STORY can be found online at www. nanaimobulletin.com/ sports/clippers. ◆ IF THE CLIPPERS advance, they play Game 1 of Round 2 on Friday (March 22). The game could be home or away depending on results in the other Island Division series.

suffered the loss in goal in his first start of the series. Reid Sturos had both Nanaimo goals, including one with 22 seconds left in the third period that allowed his team to put together one final flurry to try to tie the game.
So both teams won their home games to start the series, and the Clippers ended up getting the home-ice advantage for Game 5 that they’d played for all season long. “A rink’s a rink, but maybe being able to get a few matchups on the ice that we want, having
the ability to do that will be helpful,” Vandekamp said. The Clippers also had some cavalry come in for Game 5, as power forward Mason Mitchell – one of the team’s top goal scorers in the second half of the season – returned from suspension for his
first playoff action. Vandekamp was asked whether the hockey cliches about winning with guts, heart and determination are accurate when it comes to elimination games. “The best team will win – the team that plays the best as a team. Part of playing as a team is doing just that, working hard and making sacrifices,” he said. “It’s not a matter of people playing outside of their abilities, it’s just a matter of everybody showing up and playing to the best of their abilities and playing hard as a team.” ICE CHIPS … The winner advances to face either the Victoria Grizzlies or the Powell River Kings. Those teams also needed a Game 5 to settle their series. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

VIBI brings veteran lineup to ballpark Inbrief ◆ From /B1 Getting the start in the opener will be big righty Connor Russell, and Cody Chartrand and Reiley Grose are other guys who will start games during the series. They’ll be supported by another seven or eight members of the pitching staff, all of whom are healthy and ready to go. “It’s nice to be able to trust the guys coming in behind you, that they’ll throw strikes, and there’s a good core of a starting rotation, too,” Grose said. On offence, one of the leaders will be shortstop Dallas Monk, who has been giving the team consistently good at-bats at the top of the order. Newcomer Darren Kolk has had a strong spring and Blundell is interested to see the centre fielder in CCBC league play. Another new addition to the lineup is freshman Tyson Dyck, who will slot in at third base. Veterans Cody Andreychuk and Aaron Witzke will be important middle-of-theorder guys. Andreychuk will play designated hitter, while also manning the outfield on occasion, and Witzke will be in right. Vet-

stage of spring, his batters seem to be swinging at the right pitches. “They’re picking out a pitch that they’re looking for and they’re taking a hack on it,” he said. “Now it’s building that consistency and making good contact on those swings.” Aside from baseball fun-
damentals, Blundell also wants to see what sort of compete level his team brings into league play. “[We need to] be emotionally invested and be prepared for a battle,” he said. “Be prepared to withstand things not going our way at times and be able to overcome those things.”

Emotion shouldn’t be a problem – it’s the home opener, after all, and the M’s have been feeling the anticipation building. “We’ve done a lot of work through the fall and we’re hungry to get on the field and start playing an actual game instead of going through the repetitions,” Grose said. “We feel ready and it’s going to be a good weekend.” GAME ON … The VIBI Mariners play doubleheaders against the PBA Dawgs on Saturday (March 23) and Sunday at Serauxmen Stadium. Saturday’s games will be at noon and 2:30 p.m. and Sunday’s games start at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m … The ball club will be raffling off Vancouver Canucks tickets during Saturday’s early game. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

Gymnasts bounce to victory NANAIMO CLUB wins at trampoline and tumbling event.
I
Nanaimo Gymnastics School athletes proved versatile and came up with top finishes at Gymnastics B.C.’s trampoline and tumbling championships. The local contingent combined to win seven medals at the three-day event this past
weekend at Kamloops’ Tournament Capital Centre. Chamberlan Teghtmeyer led the Nanaimo group with gold on the double mini, silver in tumbling and bronze in synchronized trampoline. Another noteworthy performance came from Emily Mould, who agreed to be a last-minute substitute for an injured teammate. After learning tumbling passes in a week, Mould won gold in her
tumbling division. Blake Mould took silver on the trampoline and Abbi Richardson earned a bronze in both the double mini and synchro trampoline. The Nanaimo club earned a silver in team competition in the double mini event, only missing first place because of tie-breaker rules. Next event for the athletes is the Western Canada Cup in Coquitlam in June.

The junior A Nanaimo Timbermen have added some scoring punch to the lineup for the coming season. The city’s B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League club announced the signing of two players who excelled at the junior B level last season with the Armstrong Shamrocks of the Thompson Okanagan Junior Lacrosse League. Brett Hawrys led that loop in scoring with 46 goals and 38 assists in 13 games. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound right hander earned league MVP honours for his efforts. Owen Barker was fourth in the league in scoring with 21 goals and 29 assists in 11 games. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound lefty might also add some grit – he racked up 100 penalty minutes last year, too. The junior Timbermen open training camp April 6. They will consider any free agents for a possible tryout; for more information e-mail general manager Jon Nicholson at jon_nich@ yahoo.com.

Sometimes coaches are measured by their win-loss record, but that never fully does them justice. The Kraft Hockey Goes On contest was put together to recognize some of Canada’s hockey coaches and administrators and all they do to make sure that hockey goes on in their communities. Only 100 people are finalists in the contest, and one of them is Rick Hannibal of the Nanaimo Minor Hockey Association. Hannibal coached the Nanaimo Kasjac Clippers Tier 2 peewee rep team this past season. The season is over, but he’s making sure that hockey goes on, coaching spring league. His teenaged daughter helped keep his nomination a secret as players, parents and other coaches wrote a stack of letters. The fact that his players support him for the contest might suggest that he’s not a stern coach, but that’s not

necessarily true – Hannibal said some kids need tough love, some need positive reinforcement, and some, he can just give them a look. The constant, he said, is that he tries to make sure they’re enjoying the game. “I try to teach them stuff that is fun, but they don’t know they’re learning something…” he said. “Sometimes hockey can get too serious
and they forget the fun.” If Hannibal does well in the Hockey Goes On contest, the NMHA stands to gain a prize of up to $100,000. Hannibal hopes the money might be used to purchase equipment for kids who might not have any. Of course he hopes to garner enough votes to win, but the nomination letters from his players were the most
meaningful recognition of all, Hannibal said. “What they’ve said about me means more than anything, more than trophies,” he said. “Letters like that, I’m going to keep those for as long as I live.” ICE CHIPS … The voting takes place Saturday (March 23) and Sunday online at www.krafthockeygoeson.ca. sports@nanaimobulletin.com

To the Editor, I would like to thank the lifeguards and staff at the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre for their professional expertise in keeping the swimming pool safe and enjoyable. It’s nice to see how much the children enjoy water and know that they are being carefully watched by the guards. I’ve used the facility
Pet owners have the chance to make their furry friend a star in the B.C. SPCA’s Animal Lovers’ calendar contest. A dozen pets will win a coveted spot in the non-profit society’s popular annual calendar. Until April 19, guardians can visit www.spca. bc.ca to upload a photo, tell a heartwarming story about their pet and customize a contest webpage where other visitors can vote for their pet. It costs $10 to enter and votes cost $1 each. Visitors can vote as often as they like for their favourite animal. The 12 animals with the most votes at noon April 19 win a spot in the calendar and an additional 10 entries will win a goody bag. The Animal Lovers’ Calendar is sent to supporters every year and is also for sale at branches and online in September.

Fit
0.99%
The movement toward lower consumption continues to gain momentum and we have excellent little gas-avoiders such as the Fit to help out. The wedge-shaped body still looks modern and athletic and the large front glass makes the car appear sleeker while providing excellent forward visibility. As one of the biggest cars in its class – in terms of interior volume – there’s an abundance of rear-passenger legroom and enough headroom for high-hatters. The interior features smart-looking gauges and control-panel layout, rich-feeling seat fabrics and 10 beverage holders. The Fit’s flip-up rear seat bench creates a load floor ideal for toting plants and shrubs while the split-folding rear seatback folds flat for transporting cargo. A 117-horsepower 1.5-litre four-cylinder connects to a five-speed manual transmission or optional five-speed automatic. Base DX Fits feature a tilt-and-telescopic steering column, four-speaker audio system and power windows, locks and mirrors. Moving up to the LX gets you air conditioning and more/better trim items, while the Sport edition offers up its own

Currently both coupes and sedans feature what Honda calls “one motion profile” sweeping rooflines plus thin roof pillars that help maximize visibility. Compared with the previous models, the sheet metal on the sedan and slightly shorter coupe is attached to a stiffer platform that reduces the distance between the front and rear wheels a tad. Despite this, inside, Honda increased shoulder and legroom for front- and rear-seat passengers and modestly enlarged the trunk space. The two-tier instrument panel is slightly more formal and the centrally located tachometer is topped by a speedometer and available five-inch screen that displays key operating and audio selection info. Most Civics operate with a 140-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine. The sporty Si coupe and Si sedan use a 2.4-litre four-cylinder that generates 201 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission and optional five-speed automatic are offered in regular-strength Civics, while a six-speed manual gearbox is exclusive to the Si. On the cleaner, greener front, the Civic Hybrid sedan runs with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder that combines with an electric motor to produce 110 horsepower. Honda claims the

Accord The U.S.-built (30 years and counting) Accord maintains a conservative presence, while undergoing a metamorphosis in style, features and running gear. The sedan shrunk nine centimetres in overall length and loses about two centimetres between the front and rear wheels, while gaining 1.5 centimetres in width. Concurrently, trunk space increases by five per cent, thanks to a more compact rear suspension. The Accord appears more svelte, with less front overhang. The coupe has undergone a more subtle transformation and remains one of the most appealing models of its type on the road. Inside, the artistically sculpted dashboard is thankfully devoid of knob and switchgear clutter. Drivers will be particularly enamoured with the clear and crisp white-on-black centre gauges and the 20-centimetre multi-information display screen. All passengers are treated to more comfort, with front-seaters enjoying more supportive buckets. There’s also an extra 2.5 centimetres of legroom for those in back. CR-V devotees might have difficulty spotting the current model that arrived for the 2012 model year since it closely mirrors the outgoing model in all key exterior dimensions. The overall shape was only moderately tinkered-with, including updated nose and tail sections plus a dramatically shaped rear roof pillar. The interior provides a slightly enlarged passenger area, but at the expense of slightly reduced cargo space. Maximizing the load floor is a snap with the standard fold-down rear seat that operates by flipping a pair of levers located just inside the tailgate. The rest of the cabin is standard Honda fare, which translates into an uncluttered dashboard, comfy, supportive seats and generously sized storage compartments. Under the hood is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 185 horsepower and 163 poundfeet of torque. Fuel-economy is a Honda trademark, but the company claims that by activating the “ECON” button that alters the transmission and air conditioning functions, drivers can save a bit more. In base LX trim, the CR-V arrives with a significant amount of standard equipment, such as heated seats and

A BEEF F to a phone company for charging me interest on a bill I received the same day it was due. A BEEF F to the city for changing the $3 swims from Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to Thursday only. Looks like you took the opportunity to charge families more during the summer because they're likely to use the pool more often. A SMART BEEF F to the beefer who has an issue with people who oppose the new radiating meters. You'll wish you supported the movement when you get your time-of-use (higher) bill from B.C. Hydro or discover that your personal information has been sold, or develop a chronic disease from the cumulative effect of microwave radiation exposure. A BIG BEEF F to the person who insists on dumping used kitty litter along Jinglepot Road and in nearby residential spots. How lazy and ignorant can a person be?
A BOUQUET. I wanted to let everyone know how special Raj at Christensen Collision is. He came highly recommended yet the service was even better than I could have hoped for. Great work, consistent professionalism and fabulous commitment to customer service.
HAPPY EASTER AND A BEAUTIFUL BOUQUET OF YELLOW ROSES to Marilyn, a cashier at Thrifty Foods in Port Place mall, for her kindness to all customers.
THE BIGGEST BOUQUET OF ROSES, WRENCHES, PAINT SPRAYERS, HANDSHAKES AND HUGS to Tony. You were not here long enough, but your grin, selflessness and enthusiasm for life will never be forgotten. Thanks for all you did and tried to do, for always being upbeat, and making everyone around you smile.
A BEAUTIFUL BOUQUET OF RED ROSES to Sue at H&R Block at Woodgrove Centre for being so nice.
A HUGE SHOUT OUT to Adam and his staff at Kal Tire near Costco. They are my knights in shining armour. When I finished work at 5:30 p.m. one day, I noticed that my car had a flat tire. I called them and not only did they offer to come right over to assist me – I work across the street – but they also insisted on taking my car to their shop overnight so it wouldn't be left in the mall parking lot. Then they repaired the flat at no charge.
A SORT OF BEEF F to the naysayers – they cannot change the past, nor control the present, nor predict the future. Whatever will be, will be.
A HUGE DELIVERY BOUQUET to Mark and Brad from The Brick. Your customer service is amazing. The Brick should be proud to have guys like you. I have never had such great delivery service.
A SAFE DRIVING BEEF F to the driver on Victoria Crescent driving with no lights in a black and grey car, on a grey and wet day. I could not see you coming and we almost collided, even though I double checked.
A BIG BEEF F to all business owners who think it's OK to have your dog on the premises while you are open to the public. I do not come into your store to socialize with your dog. I don't need it sniffing, licking, nudging and following me around. If you're so attached to your dogs, please feel free to stay at home with them. A BIG BEEF F to people who give out unlisted phone numbers to others without first contacting the owner of the unlisted number. Shame on you. A DOGGIE BEEF. I am a dog lover, but I resent it when dog owners allow their canine friends to poop on other people's lawns. It leaves a residue even when owners pick it up. Get your dogs to poop on your own lawn, then walk them. A GREEDY BEEF F to the woman who told her daughter to grab a second sample at Costco, then she grabbed one.
