By Jennifer Lang With less than two months to go until the 67th annual Cloverdale Rodeo and 125th Country Fair, organizers have announced a big discount for families with children. Children 12 and under will receive free admission to rodeo performances – and on gate admission to the country fair – provided they’re accompanied by an adult this May long weekend in Cloverdale. The move expands a discount for children’s gate admissions floated last year at Surrey’s biggest tourist attraction, which appeared poised to burst all previous attendance records until bad weather arrived, putting a damper on the final two days of

Are you looking for a way to contribute to the vitality and safety of your community? The Surrey Crime Prevention Society has two volunteer opportunities for residents in the Cloverdale and Clayton Heights neighbourhoods. The society is looking for volunteers for its community safety volunteer tours and speed watch programs. The society works with community partners the City of Surrey, Surrey RCMP, Surrey Parks and Recreation and the Surrey Public Library on a range of safety programs. Community safety volunteer tours involve walking or cycling through designated areas in pairs to observe and report suspicious activities from a safe distance. Volunteers are issued equipment, such as bicycles, two-way radios and reflective visibility jackets. Volunteers are expected to commit for a

minimum of one year, putting in one, twohour shift per week. Speed Watch volunteers work with a team to set up a speed reader board to track vehicles driving at excessive speeds through playground areas, school zones and high-risk crash sites. The program assists with data collection and public awareness of speeding issues. Volunteers gain valuable experience and

perspective through traffic safety initiatives, and are invited to Speed Watch training events throughout the year. Speed Watch volunteers are expected to commit to a four-hour shift once per month, weather permitting. Interested applicants can contact Jen Samuel at jen@preventcrime. ca. On behalf of the mayor and council, thank you so very much.” Hunt added that the city is working with the Canada Public Private Partnerships program because it’s still hoping to one day build a convention facility on the site that would be large enough to accommodate the rodeo, bringing it indoors. “And then we can just have a real good party instead of worrying about the weather every May long weekend,” he said. The city’s operating grant to the association is $775,000, but only a portion of that goes to the rodeo and country fair. The majority – $550,000 – pays for the day-to-day operations of the fairgrounds. Hunt stressed that the combined grant is “a great deal for the city” because it gets so much in return. That’s because in addition to managing the annual rodeo and fair, which brings in millions of revenue in the city of Surrey, the Cloverdale Rodeo and Exhibition Association is responsible for year-round management of the eight facilities on the fairgrounds. A drop in attendance can have a big impact on finances, especially by the end of the year, treasurer Gerry Spielmacher said, delivering his report March 13. “If we could get a good year behind us, we could get our finances back in really good, strong order.” Last year’s challenges forced the board of directors to make a number of changes, including ending the contract of general manager Dave Melenchuk. Mike MacSorley, a former vice president of the PNE, was hired in October, and he’s hired several new staff members, including a new events manager, office administrator and accountant. “The association is looking hard at ways it can continue to mitigate the financial risk it incurs in being

an outdoor event in the Lower Mainland,” spokesperson Laura Ballance said Tuesday, adding MacSorley has assembled a team that will take the association in the right direction. “They had a tough year but they’ll bounce back.” In offering free admission for both events to children 12 and under, the association hopes to appeal to more families by making it more affordable. Last year, there was a discount for children under 6, but the public found it confusing, MacSorley said. Along with the world’s top-ranked cowboys and cowgirls, the 2013 Cloverdale Rodeo May 17 to 20 will feature additional competitions, including the alwayspopular Mutton Bustin, the Rib Fest and BBQ Competition, and will see return of the World Freestyle Round-Up Skateboarding Competition. B.C.’s largest midway will also return, along with the Kidz Zone, Classic Car Show, and more, including performances by the Ken McCoy Band and Dr. Strangelove, and B.C. Country Music female vocalist for 2012, AJ Woodworth.

Youth leaders help homeless By Jennifer Lang Local members of an organization for young community leaders recently marked World Rotaract Week by making outreach kits for Cloverdale’s homeless. The Cloverdale Rotaract Club – part of District 5050 – joined their counterparts across the globe by planning events to raise the profile of the international organization, a program of Rotary International that encourages youth to serve their communities and which celebrates its 45th anniversary this year. The Cloverdale chapter recently assembled 50 kits for Cloverdale Hyland House, a local shelter. The kits each contain a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, instant coffee, socks, hand warmer, and

granola bar. “Earlier this year our local projects committee (Manprit Chutai and Manny Chutai) contacted the Cloverdale shelter to ask if there was anything that we could do to help out their operation through fundraising or projects,” said Jennifer Petrichenko of the Rotaract Club of Cloverdale. “ The director there advised our members that one of the biggest things we could do to help was create kits that they could give to individuals that frequent the facility. They give out the bags seasonally so we hope to continue this project as the seasons turn.” Locally, members are involved in community events such as the Cloverdale Blueberry Festival.

CHANGES LIVES — MAKING A DIFFERENCE We train students and send them on their way with freshly minted certificate in hand, off into the world to render aid when an incident happens. On occasion students contact us when they’ve had to use their skills to share their experience. This past year we heard back from a student that attended a Canadian Red Cross Emergency First Aid class a couple years ago. Here is how it went: I just have to let you know about an incident that happened in my home here in Cloverdale a week ago. I took your course just before Christmas when our first child was born and it was a little over a year later when my wife stepped out of the room to grab the phone. When she returned, no more than a couple minutes later, our son (15 months) was not moving on the floor. I heard my wife scream so I came running. Jamie was unconscious and his lips and face were definitely blue. There was a moment of panic when I told my wife to call 911 but then amazingly I remembered what you taught us. It was like you were standing over my shoulder telling me the steps like we were in class. Everything came back in that moment! I opened his airway and checked for breathing, there was none. I started doing chest compressions, it was scary compressing my son’s chest like that but I knew it had to be done if he had a chance. Almost immediately a wood plug (the ones that cover screw holes in wood furniture) from one of our kitchen chairs popped out and he immediately began to breathe and cry. The paramedics arrived about 10 minutes later and Jamie was checked over. We went to hospital where he was checked and the doctor confirmed that everything is ok. The emergency doctor complimented me on my quick reaction and said if I had not cleared the airway so quickly, it would likely have been a very different story. There will be no long term effects just memories of a day I will never forget. All I can say is, it really works and I am so glad I took that training! Thank you for what you do and even though you weren’t there physically, I felt you were there with me through the whole thing!

ties have implemented Dark Sky Ordinances designed to conserve cash and energy, and attract astronomers and researchers. One such place is Safford, home to MGIO, the Mount Graham International Observatory. Upon our arrival Mother Nature was in an uncooperative mood. But, when she finally unveiled the night sky it was undeniably impressive. Suddenly, I was acutely aware of how long it was since I’d seen such a brilliant extravaganza. Minimizing artificial outdoor lighting in Phoenix, Flagstaff, and small southern centres, is proving that mysterious Dark Sky beauty inspires both scientists, tourists, and locals. “We retired here because of the clear skies,” hobby stargazers told me repeatedly. Is a backyard telescope standard desert equipment, I

wondered? It seems so. Picture a real life, real time, sci-fi flick featuring flocks of Arizona residents emerging after dark hoping to be the first to spot a nebula (an interstellar gas and dust cloud), the birth of a new star, the demise of an old one, or simply being awed by a shooting star. I would be kept busy wishing on them all! The possibilities – based on the right conditions and equipment – are undeniably endless. So, has preserving and promoting the Arizona night sky succeeded? Apparently. It has lured the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope to the strange desert-to-evergreen terrain atop Mount Graham, high above Safford. A few yards away looms the Large Binocular Telescope, one of the world’s most advanced telescopes housed in the constantly staffed Observatory. And the Meteorite Collection at Arizona State University in Tempe contains the world’s largest university-based meteorite collection with over 1,600 separate meteorite falls is on display. Visits to this active global research centre are encouraged, and I would highly recommend it. There is no entry fee. Our tour was complex, and far exceeded all my elementary technical understand-

ing of this massive installation, or the nearby Heinrich Herts Submillimeter Telescope. Suffice to say, though, I left with an increased awareness of the massive scope of the staggering size and complexity of the cosmos, plus a peculiar sense of having visited an alien world populated by invisible ‘day sleeper’ space travellers. It could also have been a touch lightheadedness – the Observatory altitude is 10,700 feet. “So, you believe in the Big Bang Theory?” I asked our well-versed, and clearly dedicated, guide. “Absolutely,” he replied firmly. The same sentiment was repeatedly voiced by hobbyists, and academics. Since no one was on duty at the Vatican Telescope Observatory, there was no way to inquire if VTO astronomers checked their faith at the door, or if they were just hedging their bets. That’s a discussion I’m sure I would have thoroughly enjoyed. In the 1870s, the legendary Billy the Kid roamed these mountains, also known as ‘sky islands’, but times have changed. You’ll have to make reservations at the Eastern Arizona College’s Discovery Park Campus (call -928-4286260) for weekend tours from mid May to mid November if weather permits.

The smart money is on non-traditional lenders. Another wave of mortgage lending rules has many Canadians looking at non-traditional lenders: those not federally regulated. As trained, accredited mortgage professionals, we’re always scouting out the best options, so we can help more Canadians achieve their homeownership dreams. 2. Avoid rollovers. That’s when your mortgage comes up for renewal and you just roll it over with your current lender. If you are auto-renewed at posted versus discounted rates, the difference can be hundreds of dollars a month. At renewal, you have a moment of opportunity to shop around, and make every last dollar count. Contact us for the best range of options. 3. Polish your credit. A low credit score can prevent you from getting the lowest

mortgage rate. That’s why it’s so important to have good credit behaviours, like paying your bills on time. Don’t let your credit accounts exceed 30% of the credit available. The right renovation might be all it takes to turn the house you’re in, into the home of your dreams. It is almost always less expensive to renovate than to relocate – if an upgrade to your lifestyle is what you’re after! • Get your benefits: Any senior receiving Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) through Old Age Security should file on time to ensure their benefits continue uninterrupted. • Transfer amounts: If your spouse is unable to completely offset his or her age amount, pension income and disability amount against tax payable, he or she may transfer the unused portion to your return. • Caregiver amount: If you live with your children and you are over 65, they may be able to claim a caregiver amount for you if your income is less than $19,435. • Foreign pension income: Pensions from foreign countries may be subject to special tax treatment under the terms of a tax treaty. Always check with a tax professional to find out if the pension you receive

from a foreign source is taxable in Canada. • Split your CPP and save: You may be able to split part of your CPP retirement benefits with your spouse depending on how long you lived together when you were contributing to the plan. This is an advantage if one senior is in a higher tax bracket than the other. However, to do so, you must apply to Human Resources & Social Development Canada using Form ISP-1002. It cannot be done at the time of tax preparation. • Medical expenses can add up: If you purchase medical insurance for a trip or wintering in another country, it is considered a medical expense. Medical expenses are calculated based on income so the lower income spouse should claim them. And if you have to travel to obtain medical treatment that was not available where you live, you may be able to claim the cost of transportation, meals and accommodation. On a more down-to-earth note, this is also the Salsa Trail, the tagline for a series of small town south-western Mexican-style restaurants. A homemade chimichanga and salsa at the newly-renovated La Paloma Restaurant in nearby Solomon, and a visit with local Chamber of Commerce members, made me feel right at home. There is also a local family-owned tortilla factory which is well patronized by locals. For a real change of pace, an easy couple of hours drive will land you in historic Bisbee. This funky little town is composed of three sections, but it’s the old one that’s home to Brewery Gulch. It’s a long, dusty trip! A hill town populated by free-spirits and independent business folks, a glassblowing merchant, and silver jewellery designer told me life there is good. Discovering copper in 1880 turned

this into a thriving little town, until the mine closed in 1975. Undaunted, the Queen Mine was turned into a tourist attraction that doesn’t disappoint. Visitors ride 1,500 feet into the disused mine shaft on a little train with guides, many of whom were associated with the working mine. As always with such mines, it’s hard to imagine such labour-intensive work for men – and donkeys that worked underground until the darkness affected their eyes, and they had to be returned to the surface.
