Gregarious Gardener

Time to nominate an outstanding volunteer

by Top Crop Garden, Farm & Pet

New shrubs and trees

After looking at the new small fruit shrubs and roses last week, I will tell you about exciting new additions to the lineup of ornamental shrubs and trees. Not everyone is familiar with the weigela family of shrubs and if you are not, I suggest you come see what’s new in weigela. This is an outstanding year for weigela with a lot of new introductions and there will be five of them that will grow in our area. Weigela are great little shrubs and depending on variety range in height from 12 inches to 5 feet. This shrub boasts compact growth and showy trumpet shaped flowers, some with fragrance, that will bloom in mid spring and sometimes again in the fall if deadheaded. It is also one of the best shrubs to attract hummingbirds, a definite must have for your hummingbird garden. The names of the new varieties alone make me want to plant them, with ‘Rainbow Sensation’, a variegated foliage weigela with soft pink trumpet shaped flowers, really a rainbow of colour all season. ‘Wings of Fire’ weigela is a striking new addition to the family, with leaves that open in spring with a faint flush of pink red that continue to darken and take on more red until late summer when they are awash with fiery red. This colour continues to intensify into autumn making other garden plants jealous of the showy foliage. It does flower, a cool pink but they are almost an afterthought as this variety is a must have for foliage in your garden. And last but certainly not the least are the new additions of ‘Sonic Bloom Pink’ and ‘Sonic Bloom Red’. These new beauties are a must have as the first true reblooming weigela, and they don’t rebloom once, they will rebloom all season long until frost. Finally a reblooming weigela that will keep the hummingbirds in the yard all season long. Hydrangeas are a must have in any garden and this years new introductions are a continuation in the tradition of showy and hardy hydrangea. ‘Great Star’ comes to us from Europe and is unique, because of its graceful display of large starry blooms, that are a creamy white colour with 4 inch wide blooms. This hydrangea is a large variety reaching about 6 feet in height at maturity, so be sure to give it room to grow in the yard and it will flower from mid-summer to frost. ‘Bobo’ hydrangea is the second new introduction for 2013 and will most definitely turn heads. It is a compact 3 foot tall hydrangea that is engulfed in large white flowers in the summer and the blooms take on a slightly pinkish tinge in fall. This is a must have especially for our modern yards where a full size hydrangea may overpower an area, a compact hydrangea with all the showiness of a full size hydrangea in flower. A perfect addition to any garden. No preview of what’s new can be complete without introducing the new maples for 2013. Maples are always a favourite of most gardeners, not only because of their showiness in the fall, but also their speed of growth. The new varieties for 2013 certainly follow in this same tradition. ‘Red Rocket’ maple is a perfect choice for smaller yards or if you want that stunning red display, but don’t have room for a tree that is 50 feet high when mature. ‘Red Rocket’ is a columnar red maple that reaches 30 feet in height and 10 feet in spread - all the showiness of the fall red maple, but in a columnar form. It is perfect for creating an informal break between two yards or even planting as privacy around the deck or hot tub. The next maple on display is the ‘Crimson Sunset’ maple, it is similar in leaf colour to the ‘Crimson King’ or ‘Prairie Splendor’, but is distinguished by a more compact and upright habit and outstanding heat tolerance. It will flourish in the summer heat where other varieties may show signs of heat stress. The leaves are also noted for taking on a slightly copper tone in the fall. Another must-have addition to the landscape. With so much new for 2013 in the nursery, I am sure there will be at least one new addition to your landscape and if you are anything like me, more than a few new installations in the yard this spring and summer season. Come down and have a look at all the beautiful new trees and shrubs that would love to help make your yard one of a kind and your own little piece of paradise. Till next time... happy gardening. Seniors, stop worrying about your pocketbooks. by Kathleen Thomas For many seniors, there are common concerns about lifestyle as they age. Many wonder how they will manage their own homes in their older years or what kind of personal care they might be able to afford. For seniors on a limited income, these concerns can be especially pressing as limited resources tend to mean fewer options. Fortunately, a new model of retirement living is helping to alleviate those fears. Retirement living communities across the country are working with provincial, federal and local authorities to make seniors of all income levels equally welcome in their facilities. In Kimberley, Garden View Village has made a commitment to low-income seniors a priority.

3 Facts you need to Know About... Attracting Doctors to Rural BC

1. The Joint Standing Committee on Rural Issues, a collaboration of government representatives, rural physicians, the BC Medical Association, and regional health authorities, has made recommendations to the Ministry of Health, based on the degree of difficulty the community has experienced in recruiting hard-to-fill physician positions. 2. East Kootenay Regional Hospital received $100,000 from the Province to attract a much needed anesthetist. Doctors receive $50,000 to come & another $50,000 after one year of service but must repay money if they don’t stay 3 years. 3. This is a pilot project and if successful, the provincial government will inject further funds into the program to assist other rural communities. There are already other incentives to attract physicians to rural communities, such as contracts for services in Sparwood & Elkford. Best described as a number crossword, the task in Kakuro is to fill all of the empty squares, using numbers 1 to 9, so the sum of each horizontal block equals the number to its left, and the sum of each vertical block equals the number on its top. This popular rebate program returns to provide an incentive for homeowners who install a low flow toilet, replacing a higher volume fixture (greater than 6 litres per flush). There is a lifetime maximum of two $50 rebates (maximum $100) per residence. Submitting an application does not guarantee a rebate – each application will be evaluated and processed on a first come, first serve basis. To qualify for a rebate, you must be a property owner in the limits of the City of Cranbrook. For more information about the Low Flow Toilet Rebate program and qualifications you can visit the City of Cranbrook website at www.cranbrook.ca. City Hall will be closed for Good Friday (March 29) and Easter Monday (April 1st) for the Easter weekend. City Hall will reopen as usual at 8:30am on Tuesday April 2.

College of the Rockies

Why Choose College of the Rockies? A few of the many reasons you should consider College of the Rockies:

Our small class sizes provide more individualized instruction and better access to our amazing instructors. Our many transfer agreements allow you to start your educational journey close to home and easily transfer to university to complete your credential. Staying local and enjoying lower tuition and lots of scholarship, bursary and award options helps you to save money!

   Nina Erickson was in her first practicum in College of the Rockies’ Education Assistant Program when she realized she wanted to continue her education and obtain a Bachelor of Education degree. She found the small class sizes allowed for more hands-on learning opportunities than she may have experienced at a larger institution. Four months after graduating Nina obtained a full-time teaching position in Ahousat, BC where she is further developing her skills in hopes of eventually returning to the Cranbrook area to teach.

Create your journey... start here, get there.

Flexible learning options including day, evening and online courses to fit your schedule and your lifestyle. Our faculty are highly qualified - many have PhDs! Student support is our priority. We want to help you succeed.

We were pleased to work with the Kootenay Advertiser on the annual Women’s Show at St. Eugene’s resort. As the charity of choice we were happy to receive $2,600 from the door entrance proceeds. Obituaries OBITUARY

Rena Gladys Turner (nee Ireland) March 14, 1918 – March 3, 2013 With heavy hearts, the family announce the peaceful passing of their mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend surrounded by family, just shy of her 95th birthday, reunited with husband Andy, son Morley, her mother, brothers and sister. Mom was born March 14, 1918 on the family farm near Meota, Saskatchewan to Jack and Florence Ireland. She grew up on the farm, educated in a rural school, left home beginning her adult life. While working in North Battleford, she met the love of her life Andy, they were married on August 2, 1942, and relocated to Regina in 1946 where dad was employed with CP Air and daughter Judy-Lynn was born. In 1947 they relocated to Taber, AB where son Morley and daughter Cindy-Anne were born. In 1951 they again packed up and moved to Cranbrook, BC where son Bradford was born, and she resided until her passing. During her life, mom was dedicated to helping others and very involved in her community. She was active in the United Church, Juniper Day School, Dr. Endicott Home, ACT Ladies, Kinnette Club, and K40. She enjoyed bowling in her younger years. She led CGIT for many years in Creston and Cranbrook, and was instrumental in the opening of The Cellar. Mom was predeceased by husband Andy in 2003, son Morley in 2012, her parents, in-laws, sister Belle, brothers Stan, Ken and John. Left missing her are daughter’s Judy-Lynn (Reg), Cindy-Anne (Ian), son Bradford (Pam); grandchildren Tamara, Drew, Andy, Jeff, Rhonda, Jennifer, Jeffrey, and Mitch; great-grandchildren Raeanna, Talyah, Tyrus, Tavin, Maddison, Triston, Elizabeth and Alexandra; her sister Elsie along with many nieces, nephews, and friends. A celebration of mom’s life will be held at the Cranbrook United Church on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at 2:00 pm. A reception will follow in the Church Hall. No flowers by request, however, donations in her memory may be made to Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC & Yukon, Canadian Cancer Society, Dr. David Suzuki Foundation or a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the staff at Joseph Creek Care Village, Dr. F.W. Green Memorial Home and East Kootenay Regional Hospital for their loving care during her stay there. Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service. Condolences for the family can be offered at: www.mcphersonfh.com
