CBT earmarks more than $19 million in new funding for area Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) will provide $19.4 million in new funding in the 2013/14 fiscal year to support a broad range of social, economic and envi-
ronmental initiatives throughout the region. “A key approach in how CBT delivers benefits is to support Basin communities and residents in identifying their
priorities, and to provide funds and other supports based on those priorities,” said Greg Deck, Chair, Board of Directors. “CBT will deliver a substantial portion of
this budget by involving communities in directly allocating CBT funds based on communityidentified priorities.” CBT’s Board of Directors approved the following budget allocation for 2013/14: • $3.5 million for Social Initiatives, including literacy, affordable housing, non-profit initiatives and $1 million
for the Social Grants Program; • $3.2 million for Economic Initiatives to strengthen the labour force, foster entrepreneurial ventures and encourage regional economic development partnerships within the Basin, including $1.3 million for wage subsidy programs; • $3.3 million for En-

Victoria is a long way from the East Kootenay, both in distance and in culture. Sometimes it seems that the things we value in rural BC aren’t priorities in the Lower Mainland. That’s why we need an MLA who is strong, passionate and knows how to get things done. Bill hikes, hunts, fishes, quads, snowmobiles, skis and golfs. Bill Bennett understands outdoor issues and shares our values here in the East Kootenay and he’s proven he’ll stand up for them. That’s why his constituents have nicknamed him “Kootenay Bill”

Salus® Floradix Formula Liquid Iron & Vitamin Formula Tired? You may be Iron Deficient! Why do so many of us constantly feel tired or fatigued? Perhaps the reason is iron deficiency, the most prevalent nutrient deficiency worldwide. Iron deficiency is the leading cause of fatigue among women between the time of menstruation and menopause. It is estimated that up to 26% of menstruating women are iron deficient. Women of childbearing age and adolescent girls need to regularly replace the iron that is eliminated through monthly blood loss. The elderly are also at risk because they no longer absorb iron from foods as efficiently as when they were younger. Regular Price for 500ml + 250ml = $75.59 SALE PRICE: $46.99 SAVINGS: $28.60 Salus® Floravit Formula Yeast & Gluten Free Liquid Iron & Vitamin Formula Floravit® is a yeast-free, gluten-free liquid iron supplement that is specially formulated for easy absorption and assimilation. In fact, over 98% of the iron is available for quick potential absorption. The daily use of Floravit® helps normalize low iron levels to boost energy, vitality and optimal health. Floravit® is especially important before and during pregnancy, and while breastfeeding. Iron is an essential element for the body. It combines with copper and protein to make hemoglobin, a major component of red blood cells which transports oxygen from the lungs to all the tissues of the body. Over the years, Angela and I have become less enthusiastic about large wine tasting events, our preference trending toward smaller, more intimate ones. So we were quite happy when we walked into the Flavours of British Columbia fundraiser recently. Organized by Alberta Theatre Projects and held in the lower level of Willow Park Wines and Spirits in Calgary, the tasting featured several food stations, live music, a silent auction and wines from 14 members of the Naramata Bench Wineries Association. Perfect. We had only eaten the appies designed to match with our tasting earlier in the evening, so we headed directly to a food table that was serving up open-faced sandwiches featuring lamb or chicken. They were scrumptious and a few minutes later we were wandering around the room. The selection of wines was small enough that no particular plan of action was necessary. Walk into a tasting featuring 600 wines, which we have done on more than a few occasions, and one had better have a plan. Or face becoming completely overwhelmed in a matter of minutes. The only real downside of a small tasting is that there is no particular sense of urgency among those in attendance. People tend to settle in front of a winery’s tasting table and leisurely taste their way through the selection, chatting with the server or their friends. In a larger event,
one can expect to get elbowed or brushed aside, sometimes not so gently, when others around sense you have overstayed your welcome. Of course, I was guilty a couple of times, myself. I never sample wines without moving aside, and not only out of consideration for others. As a spitter, I first head directly for a spit bucket, which is inevitably set at the end of the table, and used only occasionally. But I did take up several minutes in front of the D’Angelo Estate Winery and Serendipity Winery stations so that I could catch up with Sal D’Angelo and Judy Kingston, the wineries’ respective owners. They are among my favourite people on the Naramata Bench and I wasn’t about to pass up the chance to find out what each was up to in the wineries. While the wineries present represented only about half of the Naramata makers, the selection was a good one. Small producers like Kettle Valley, La Frenz and Van Westen competed comfortably with the bigger and better known Hillside Estate, Poplar Grove, Monster Vineyards and Red Rooster. Visitors to Naramata often miss the chance to stop into Laughing Stock because the wines sell out quickly. A chance to taste those wines in a casual setting was a treat. Elephant Island Orchard Wines was a popular site among the curious, who were inevitably impressed at the high quality of the products. Lake Breeze is always a welcome participant because tasting their wines takes one
back to unforgettable visits to the beautiful property. Moraine Estate is one of the newer labels on the Bench and it was good to see them in attendance. And what tasting isn’t going to improve with a little bit of Therapy? Therapy Vineyards has one of the most innovative and amusing marketing campaigns in the country, and the wines invariably meet the promise. The silent auction, a great way to raise funds, featured a great number of wine packages, including one each from the participating wineries. The music was an excellent addition, blending in nicely and never making conversation difficult. The food, as at all Willow Park events, was superb. I have no idea how much money was raised during the evening, but I suspect the theatre group was happy at the end of the night. Once again, Alberta Theatre Projects had associated itself with a well-organized and most pleasant tasting, providing a showcase for Naramata Bench wineries and taking advantage of the excellent facility at Willow Park, one that was until a few years ago used for wine and spirits storage and cleared out only for the store’s own fundraising week each November. It now comfortably holds 300 people. The Willow Park Wines and Spirits web site is worth checking out for anyone planning a trip to Calgary. The calendar is chock full of events and the extremely knowledgeable staff has become masterful at hosting, educating and entertaining.

The Atom ICE went undefeated in their pool beating Surrey, Westside, and Abbotsford. The team then beat South Okanagan in the semi final game to end up in the final against Boise. It was a battle between Boise and the ICE and after two periods Kootenay was ahead 3-2. Kootenay would get three more in the third period to win the game 6-2 and pick up the hardware.

carbon footprint and save some bucks. Wildsight’s Climate Solutions coordinator, Lars Sander-Green said that the selected demonstration homeowners will receive a free energy assessment to highlight money and energy draining problems. “A certified energy adviser will assess the house, and conduct a blower door test for air leakage,” said SanderGreen. “Then they will provide a list of potential energy upgrades with projected cost savings.” He said an experienced contractor will work with volunteers to make energy efficient upgrades to the home. “Homeowners will be expected to cover material costs,” said SanderGreen, “but will end up with a set of energy efficiency upgrades at a very low cost.” So come out in April and join the fun - this is a great chance to get your hands dirty and build some confidence. Volunteers will have the chance to join a fun weekend work party on April 6 & 7th in Cranbrook of April 13 & 14th in Kimberley and to learn hands-on how to complete simple energy upgrades in their own homes. No experience or tool kit is necessary. “Most people are pretty surprised how easy it is to make a few small changes that can make a big difference,” said Sander-Green. Participants will also be able to take advantage of Wildsight’s $450 wood-stove exchange rebate so we can all breathe a little easier, and a low flow toilet rebate or a $500 rebate for solar hot water from the City of Kimberley. Wildsight is now accepting applications for demonstration houses, so if you want your old, leaky, house to be one of our demo projects or want to volunteer to help out, get in touch with Lars Sander-Green at lars@wildsight.ca or 250-427-2535 x 227. For more information on Wildsight’s Climate Solutions projects, including composting workshops, waste reduction, biomass heating, carshare, and vanpool, visit Wildsight.ca/Climate. u n n A h t 6 1 Rebelle Kim Nguyen Canada , 2012 French with English subtitles 90 minutes Principal Cast: Rachel Mwanza, Serge Kanyinda Director Kim Nguyen spent ten years bringing this story to the screen, basing his script on the stories of actual child soldiers and shooting entirely on location in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The film is narrated by fourteen-year-old Komona (Rachel Mwanza), who recounts the past two years of her life to her unborn child. Abducted by a rebel army that invades her small village, Komona is forced to commit an unthinkable act — shooting her own parents — before being dragged off into the jungle. Over the next several months, she is inducted into the brutal
lifestyle of the child soldier: she is beaten repeatedly, taught to fire an AK-47, and kept in a drugged state by the administration of “magic milk.” One day, Komona has a vision of her parents, who warn her of danger ahead; heeding the apparitions’ advice, she is the only person to escape unscathed from a ferocious firefight. Impressed by her premonitory powers, the warlord Great Tiger bestows Komona with the title of “War Witch,” which earns her both privileges in the camp and the threat of harsh punishment if her powers fail. When Komona befriends fellow soldier Magicien (Serge Kanyinda), she seems to have found an escape. The two soon run away together and eventually fall in love — but the war is never far away, and their romantic idyll is cut short when they are recaptured by the

rebels. Returned to the tyranny of her former life and still haunted by the ghosts of her parents, Komona soon becomes pregnant and struggles to find a ray of hope in her desperate situation. This is undeniably grim material, but Nguyen leavens it with delicacy and tact, conveying violence by implication and atmosphere rather than through direct depiction. The performances from the mostly nonprofessional cast are vivid and authentic, particularly the extraordinary Mwanza’s portrayal of Komona, which won her the Best Actress prize at both the Berlin and Tribeca film festivals. Heartfelt and helplessly moving, Rebelle guides us through the harsh world of a young girl whose circumstances are tragic, yet whose story is one of formidable courage and unquenchable hope
Roger Michell United Kingdom, 2012 English 95 minutes Principal Cast: Bill Murray, Laura Linney, Roger Michell’s scurrilously entertaining Hyde Park on Hudson details the historic pre-war weekend in 1939 when England’s King George VI (last seen portrayed by Colin Firth in the Film Circuit favourite The King’s Speech) and Queen Consort Elizabeth came calling on U.S. president Franklin Delano Roosevelt at his upstate New York manor house — and when the president started to become especially close to his distant cousin Margaret “Daisy” Suckley.
The Angel’sShare Ken Loach United Kingdom, 2012 English 101 minutes Principal Cast: Paul Brannigan, Siobhan Reilly, John Henshaw, Roger Allam Determined to straighten out his life and settle down with his pregnant girlfriend (Siobhan Reilly), Robbie narrowly manages to avoid more jail time by agreeing to community service. He is soon befriended by his avuncular supervisor Harry (John Henshaw), a kindly soul
who has a connoisseur’s passion for whisky. When Harry takes Robbie and his fellow young offenders Mo (Jasmin Riggins), Rhino (William Ruane) and Albert (Gary Maitland) on an outing to a distillery in the Highlands, Robbie discovers that he has a natural nose for whisky. With his newfound skill, Robbie soon hatches a plan to plunder a few bottles of extremely rare Malt Mill whisky, which would give him and his fellow roughnecks enough money to clear their debts and start afresh. As two percent of every barrel of whisky evaporates over the course of a year — the
The royal couple’s sojourn to Hyde Park on Hudson marks the first time that the British monarchy has ever made an official visit to the United States, and with war clouds on the horizon it is crucial that the soon-to-be allied nations fortify relations. Michell and screenwriter Richard Nelson playfully depict the recurring spasms of culture shock — hot dogs on the barbecue proving an especial source of horror for the royals — that serve to turn prying eyes away from the blossoming love between Daisy (Laura Linney, Kinsey, Love Actually) and FDR (Bill Murray, Moonrise Kingdom, Get Low). Meaningful silences, the proud display of a stamp collection, a tryst in a car — stolen moments accumulate as affinity becomes affec-
so-called “angels’ share” — Robbie and his mates reason that it could be put to better use down on earth. Working wonders with a cast of nonprofessionals and unknowns, and making picturesque use of the lush, rolling Scottish Highlands, Loach transforms grubby realism into sprightly fable. Calling to mind two classic Scottish comedies, Alexander Mackendrick’s Whisky Galore! and Bill Forsyth’s That Sinking Feeling, The Angels’ Share is whimsical, light-hearted and freewheeling — but like any good whisky, it’s still got a bit of a kick.

tion becomes an affair, while the chaos brewing on the European continent seems far, far away. Well-served by Nelson’s screenplay and Michell’s sensitive, assured direction, Linney is marvelous as Daisy, both outsider and confidant, an object of fixation and the soul of discretion. But the film’s biggest revelation is Murray, who does not suppress his inimitable persona so much as channel it into a remarkable evocation of this larger-than-life figure; the deadpan humour and sideways charm remain, but Murray holds himself differently, uncannily suggests Roosevelt’s unique, almost Cary Grant-like cadence, and gives the impression of a man bearing great responsibility with beguiling grace.

Anna Karenina Joe Wright United Kingdom/Fra nce, 2012 English 130 minutes Principal Cast: Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Aaron Johnson, Matthew Macfadyen, Olivia Williams, Emily Watson, Kelly MacDonald, Domhnall Gleeson Set against the richly textured canvas of late nineteenthcentury Russian high society, Anna Karenina chronicles the doomed affair between the sensuous and rebellious Anna (Knightley, A Dangerous Method, Last Night) and dashing army officer Count
Vronsky (Aaron Johnson, Nowhere Boy, Albert Nobbs). Trapped in a loveless marriage to Count Karenin (Jude Law, Hugo, 360), a prominent government official twenty years her senior, Anna is flattered when she attracts the attention of the charismatic Vronsky. Although Anna initially rejects Vronsky’s advances, the couple’s powerful mutual attraction only intensifies. When Anna eventually succumbs to her desires, she soon finds herself torn between her happiness and the rigid demands of society. In a brilliantly neo-Brechtian twist, director Wright sets Anna and Vronsky’s tragic
tale against a blatantly theatrical backdrop, with stagehands changing the sets as the starcrossed lovers play out their fateful romance Anchored by Knightley’s commanding performance, and featuring an impressive supporting cast that includes Emily Watson (War Horse, Oranges and Sunshine), Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire, No Country for Old Men), Domhnall Gleeson (True Grit, Never Let Me Go) and Olivia Williams (An Education, the upcoming Hyde Park on Hudson), Anna Karenina is a dynamic and gorgeously rendered adaptation of the literary classic.

Jeff Orlowski USA, 2012 English 75 minutes With: James Balog Chasing Ice is the engrossing and enlightening debut feature from documentary filmmaker Jeff Orlowski. A Royal Affair
Nikolaj Arcel Denmark/Sweden/Czech Republic/ Germany, 2012 Danish with English subtitles, English 134 minutes
In the late eighteenth century, Denmark is ruled by the spoiled King Christian VII (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard), for whom governing takes a decided backseat to playing with his dog and indulging in all the pleasures of the flesh — which makes him susceptible to the designs of cunning courtiers.
Enter Johann Struensee (Mikkelsen), a ruggedly handsome German doctor and staunch proponent of the Enlightenment’s reformist principles, who is so well liked by the king when they meet abroad that he is asked to return with the monarch to Copenhagen as his personal physician. There, Struensee discovers his political match in the king’s physically and intellectually captivating queen, Caroline Mathilde (Alicia Vikander, Anna Karenina), who happens to be somewhat starved for attention.
Eager to use his influence to advance the cause of social reform, Struensee partners with the queen to convince the king to embark on an aggressive campaign of reforms, all of which stand in direct opposition to the conservative principles espoused by the king’s governing council. The two kindred spirits soon find themselves so engrossed in their explosive passion for each other that they fail to notice the conspiracies taking shape around them. What unfolds is a tale of highflown idealism undone by the blind passion of love.

ates an expedition called the Extreme Ice Survey, traversing the Arctic with a band of young adventurers and deploying revolutionary time-lapse cameras to capture a multi-year record of the world’s receding ice sheet. As the climate change debate continues to polarize America and natural disasters around the world intensify exponentially, Balog finds himself at the centre of a maelstrom and near the end of his tether, struggling to make the world see what he has seen with his own (camera) eye.
Featuring stunning cinematography and privileged views of some never-beforeseen areas of the Arctic, Chasing Ice is an engrossing chronicle of one man’s quest to reveal crucial evidence about the damage we have wrought to our carbon-powered planet. Shocking, sobering yet ultimately optimistic, the story of Balog’s incredible journey is an urgent reminder that our world is in crisis, and a rallying call to take action against its continued deterioration.

ROCKIES FILM FESTIVAL April 4-6 l Amour
16th Annua
Michael Haneke Austria/Fra nce/Germany, 2012 French with English subtitles, English 127 minutes Principal Cast: JeanLouis Trintignant, Emmanuelle Riva, Isabelle Huppert Director Michael Haneke’s Amour draws on the extraordinary talents of two of the finest and most legendary performers in the history of French cinema — Jean-Louis
Proud host of the Rockies Film Fest
Trintignant (The Conformist, Trois couleurs: Rouge) and Emmanuelle Riva (Hiroshima mon amour) — to create a powerful and moving portrait of an elderly couple struggling with their mortality. Ensconced in an apartment that fits them like an old glove and settled happily into their longestablished domestic routines, retired music teachers Anne and Georges Laurent have their comfortable world cataclysmically upend-
ed when Anne suddenly displays symptoms of a stroke. With Anne now partially paralyzed, Georges struggles to care for her at home, with each day bringing new, painful challenges. A visit from the couple’s dutiful daughter Eva (Isabelle Huppert, 8 Women, I Heart Huckabees) only further indicates how distant Georges and Anne’s lives now are from the rest of the world — a private realm that grows ever more solitary as
Anne slips slowly, unbearably away. It would have been easy with material such as this to slip into the conventions of a tearjerker, but Haneke unerringly steers clear of sentimentality, cliché or bathos. Humane, compassionate, and featuring exquisite performances from three of cinema’s greatest actors, Amour is a magisterial work from one of contemporary cinema’s most brilliant and fearless artists.
Wayne Blair Austra lia, 2012 English 103 minutes Principal Cast: Chris O’Dowd, Deborah Mailman, Miranda Tapsell, Jessica Mauboy, Shari Sebbens
rah Mailman, Bran Nue Dae, the Film Circuit hit Rabbit Proof Fence), Diana (Jessica Mauboy, Bran Nue Dae), and Cynthia (newcomer Miranda Tapsell) entering a local talent competition in an outback pub, where their moving rendition of a Merle Haggard classic outclasses the tone-deaf competition but fails to win over the racist judges. One man is impressed, however: boozy Irish emcee Dave Lovelace (Chris O’Dowd, Bridesmaids), a would-be music promoter with an ear
for raw talent. He convinces the girls to swap their sleepy country standards for soul music, promising to turn them into stars. Recruiting their long-estranged cousin Kay (Shari Sebbens) as a fourth member, the girls soon sing their way from the farflung Australian outback to Southeast Asia and a tour of war-torn Vietnam. Filled with show-stopping renditions of classic Motown hits that showcase the phenomenal voice of Mauboy (an Australian Idol alumnus), The Sapphires deftly mixes sparkling humour with serious drama, a delicate balance maintained not least by O’Dowd’s charisma and lackadaisical charm. Featuring stunning period recreations and gorgeous cinematography by Warwick Thornton, The Sapphires is a rousing film that hits all the right notes.

visual effect. However, it is important that all these elements must be harmonized and the right tone maintained throughout the room. In the living room and the bedroom, for example, choose simple furniture, a neutral upholstery fabric, and understated bedding which can be dressed up with more fashionable and extravagant accessories. A scattering of cushions is great for this task. Choose elegant yet comfortable cushions in a variety of complementary fabrics, tones, and patterns. They can be woven, embroidered, quilted, fluffy, pearly, sequined, or leather look. Dress up the bathroom with a chrome shelving unit and an
acrylic or metal bench with a fabric seat. Other fun touches include a clock fixed to the wall of the shower and an essential oil diffuser that is both decorative and relaxing as it spreads natural fragrance throughout the room. In the bedroom, install small pieces of furniture that are both practical and esthetic, such as a hand-painted dressing table or a jewellery box whose shape and material organically fit with the rest of the décor. Spring cleaning Spring is the season of renewal, a time where we have a sense of new beginnings and the urge to clean house. This year, while you make time to dust and shake out your carpets, do the same for your body and experience a new sense of energy and well-being. At the heart of any good spring cleanse is the health of your liver. The liver is the largest solid organ in the body, responsible for over 500 different functions including fighting infection and neutralizing toxins. It filters 1.4 litres of blood every minute and is arguably the most commonly stressed organ in the body. The typical Canadian diet with too much sugar, fat, alcohol, meat and dairy products plus the unavoidable exposure to toxins in our food, air and water puts a heavy load on the liver. When the liver is overworked, just like you and me, we become less effective and more sluggish. A sluggish liver
might cause you to have gas, bloating, headaches, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea, PMS, fatigue and food or environmental allergies. A congested liver can also affect your mood, making you feel angry, irritable, moody or depressed. Prevention is the best cure so even if you feel healthy it might be a good idea to give your liver a good spring clean. To help your liver, eliminate or reduce wheat, dairy, meats and sugar in your diet. Eat 4 to 6 cups of dark green leafy vegetables like kale, spinach, beet greens and swiss chard every day. Beets, artichokes, parsley, garlic, avocado, grapefruit, broccoli, lemons and the spice turmeric are particularly good for the liver. Don't forget exercise; moving your body will help stimulate your liver. This spring treat your body as well as you treat your house, cleanse your liver and enjoy the season of renewal.

OBITUARY
Obituaries
Enid Ethel Mortimer 1914 - 2013 It is with great sadness that our family announces the death of Enid Ethel Mortimer. Surrounded by family, Enid passed away in Edmonton, Alberta on January19, 2013 at 98 years of age. Born on September 20, 1914 in Barry, Wales at the outset of the Great War, Enid’s life spanned nearly a century. Enid is survived by her beloved husband, Gerald Mortimer, sister Margaret Carver, sons Rod and Barrie Chivers, Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren (Edmonton, Vancouver, Saskatoon), Nieces and Nephews (East Kootenays, Montreal) and by wonderful friends, nearby and faraway. She was predeceased by her first husband (Oswald Chivers , Newgate, 1950), by siblings Harold and Trevor Slee, by sons David, Leslie and Ronald Chivers and daughter, Janice Enid Shelly Eyre (nee Mortimer). Enid took great pride in her Welsh ancestry. Near the beginning of the depression in 1929, her family emigrated to Canada and homesteaded at Mannville, AB. Enid’s remarkable life took her across Alberta (Ryley, Blairmore, Bellevue, High River) and B.C. (Vancouver, Newgate, Grasmere, Cranbrook, Revelstoke) and finally to Edmonton. Everywhere she lived she made steadfast friends and her dedication to family, friends and community was her greatest passion. Enid was a gentle, gracious woman with a kind, caring heart and a great zest for life. She had many accomplishments, a wonderful voice, sang in choirs and was deeply involved in community organizations. Most recently, February 3, 2012, Enid was presented a pin recognizing her 50 year membership in the Eastern Star. Enid worked at many occupations including farming, shopkeeping, mail driver and retail sales. She was active as a union member while working in retail sales positions. On Saturday, March 30, 2013, at 2:00 o’clock in the afternoon, family and friends are invited to join in celebrating Enid’s life, sharing memories, enjoying one another’s company and saying farewell at Strathcona Centre Community League, 10139–87 Avenue, Edmonton, AB. Those who wish to make a memorial donation in honour of Enid may do so to a charity of their choice or to the Eastern Star Cancer Dressing Program, c/o Revelstoke Chapter No. 15, Order of the Eastern Star, P.O. Box 2579, Revelstoke, BC V0E 2S0, Attention: Joy Gill, Secretary.
