Fish farmers have no trouble with site freeze No new fish farms for Discovery Islands until 2020 PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Fish far m opponents are applauding Friday’s announcement that puts a freeze on any new farms in the Discovery Islands until 2020, but an industry spokesperson says the move will have little impact on current operations. “We support more research in Discovery Islands area and are confident it will only continue to prove what we’ve seen to date – no impact of our farms on wild salmon,” said Mary Ellen Walling, executive director of the BC Salmon Farmers Association. Walling said salmon farmers support the recommendations set out by the Cohen Commission into the Decline of Fraser River Sockeye, and did so last November. Friday’s announcement to halt any new farms in the Discovery Islands, located northeast of Campbell River, just reinforces Cohen’s recommendations, she added. “We recognize the importance
of working to resolve any outstanding questions,” said Walling. “We are participating in research being done by Genome BC and other research projects to further understand wild and aquaculture fish health. “Our fish have been shown to be very healthy and as Justice Cohen recognized we have excellent data to support this.” The largest operator of fish farms in the Discovery Islands group is Marine Harvest Canada. According to site maps on the association’s website, Marine Harvest has 18 fish farm leases scattered through the Islands while Mainstream Canada has three. Fish far m opponents such as Alexander Morton and the Coastal Alliance for Aquaculture Reform are applauding the government’s announcement, but say it does’t go far enough. “Although we applaud the decision to cease issuing new tenures in this important area, the wild salmon remain at risk from the farms that are currently operating there,” said John Werring of the David Suzuki Foundation. “We continue to call on the province to rescind these tenures and support the transition of these farms to land-based closed containment facilities which would Continued on A2

Resident raises cell phone static KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
A Campbell River woman, concerned about the potential health effects of a proposed cell phone tower in Willow Point Park, is knocking on doors warning nearby residents. Nan Latchford is trying to raise awareness and is circulating a petition to stop Telus’ plans for a 30-metre high tower in the park near the bocce ball court, in an area where cedar chips are piled up.

Latchford said her main concern is the radiation that people, particularly children playing in the park, could be exposed to. “It’s an increase in pollution – in electromagnetic frequency (EMF) and radio frequency (RF) pollution. We are adding more and more to our environment and it has an accumulative effect,” Latchford said. “The worst in my mind is that you don’t see it, you can’t smell it, you can’t touch it but there’s nowhere to hide. There is no proof that there are safe levels of exposure to EMF and RF Continued on A2

Continued from A1 for people (and) children are effected at lower exposure rates.” Latchford, who has read several studies into the effects of radiation, said because children are especially vulnerable she can’t believe Telus wants to put the tower in Willow Point Park. “It’s closely surrounded by residences and it’s in a park where children play, where the baseball diamond is, where the bocce court is and the closer people are to the tower, the more effect these frequencies will have,” she said. Telus, which is proposing to install the tower to improve spotty cell phone coverage in the Willow Point area, is following Industry Canada guidelines. Industry Canada follows Health Canada’s Safety Code 6, which limits radio frequency exposure. According to Health Canada, in 2011 the “International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified RF energy as ‘possibly carcinogenic to humans’. The IARC classification reflects the fact that some lim-

ited evidence exists that RF energy might be a risk factor for cancer. However, the vast majority of scientific research to date does not support a link between RF energy exposure and human cancers. At present, the evidence of a possible link between RF energy exposure and cancer risk is far from conclusive and more research is needed to clarify this possible link. With respect to cell phone towers, as long as exposures respect the limits set in Health Canada’s guidelines, there is no scientific reason to consider cell phone towers dan-
gerous to the public.” But a 2012 BioInitiative report, written by 14 scientists, public health and public policy experts, says “the effects of long-term exposure to wireless technologies...and from whole-body exposure to RF transmissions from cell towers and antennas is simply not yet known with certainty. However, the body of evidence at hand suggests that bioeffects and health impacts can and do occur at exquisitely low exposure levels.” Latchford, who lives less than a five minute drive away from the park, said it’s a risk
she doesn’t want to take and she’s encouraging everyone to educate themselves. She has set up a community profile for the proposed Willow Point tower on the website, www.c4st.org which provides an easy way for public input which is then directed to Telus and city council. The community profile is listed under Cell Phone Tower disputes. Latchford has also set up an e-mail address, w i l l o w p o i n t p a rk @ yahoo.ca for people to get their name put onto the petition. Telus will be collecting public feedback until April 12.

free when they enter ocean pens and are treated by a veterinarian in the event of a sea lice or disease outbreak. The Cohen report could find no single cause for the reasons for the collapse of the 2009 Fraser River sockeye run. Walling is steadfast that fish farms are not the issue and instead pointed to a warming ocean as the “elephant in the room.” Walling added that the “more interesting” recent news for the industry was the federal government’s budget announcement to spend $57.5 million to develop and streamline industry regulations. Fisheries and Oceans Canada is now responsible for regulating the aquaculture industry while the province grants tenures for all sites. And while the feds are earmarking funds for fish farming, it is also slashing the Fisheries budget by $300 million.

Problem drunks prompt judge to pause PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
In an effort to give a pair of highly troubled alcoholics a chance,
Judge Ted Gouge stuck his foot in the so-called revolving door of justice. The two First Nations men appeared before
the provincial court judge on Monday in Campbell River, both facing separate charges f o r l i q u o r- r e l a t e d offences. Jesse Mack,

42, lives with his uncle on reserve at Ahousat, north of Tofino, and was ordered to stay there by Judge Gouge at a previous court date. “The problem is, every time you come to Campbell River, you get in trouble. Somone’s going to get hurt and it could be you,” the judge warned Mack. But Mack doesn’t remember the judge making the order. He also has little memory of the events that landed him in police cells. Last Thursday afternoon Mack was found passed out in the alley behind the downtown Lighthouse Shelter. When asked by a Mountie how much he’d had to drink, Mack smiled and replied, “too much.” The next day he was back on the street, intoxicated again, and this time he was at the public library in the children’s book section. It was bad enough that his eyes were
glazed over and he had trouble walking, but Mack is also a convicted sex offender and his probation order forbids him from being in any public place where there are children. To complicate matters, Mack has mental health issues, is schizophrenic and wasn’t taking his medication when he came to Campbell River. He came here, he said, to meet with his former spouse, but then “fell in with the wrong crowd,” said duty counsel lawyer Angie Penhall. Crown prosecutor Tim Morgan asked the judge to impose a 60-day sentence after Mack pleaded guilty to several breach charges. Morgan said it would be ideal if Mack intends to deal with his problems, but in the meantime, a jail term would keep him off the street for a short period of time. Mack told the judge he wants to return to Ahousat and go before a tribal council who intend to send him to a isolated off-shore

The UF UFE E is an exam written by Chartered Accountant students across Canada over three days in September. Passing the UFE is truly a milestone achievement. Karen has been with the Chan Nowosad Boates team for almost 20 years serving and managing a variety of clients as an accounting technician and in 2010 decided to become a Chartered Accountant (CA). Marlo joined us in January 2006 after completing her Bachelor’s degree in Forestry at University of British Columbia and began her training in the CA Program. Marlo’s recent focus of work is in the trust, estate, non-resident department although she has also utilized her degree in forestry with that sector of our clients. Both Karen and Marlo completed their articling and rigorous course schedule delivered through the CA School of Business (CASB) leading up to the UFE. Karen qualified as a CA this December and Marlo qualified in February 2013. We are all very proud of both of their accomplishments and look forward to having them continue serving their clients and mentoring our newest CA students. Chan Nowosad Boates has been providing accounting services to our clients on Vancouver Island for nearly 30 years. We attribute our success not only to our clients but also to providing continuing education and training opportunities to our team members and having great people like Karen and Marlo, who take the initiative to further their education and careers.

Harry claimed the bloodied victim was his friend and he was simply crossing the street to the hospital in order to get his friend help. At Monday’s bail hearing, Judge Gouge ordered Har ry’s detention and that’s when Harry suddenly changed his plea to guilty. He told the court he wants to enter residential treatment, but had no plan in place. “What are we to do with (him)?” asked Morgan, who said the public deserves to be protected from Harry, especially when he’s drinking. “The best offender is a rehabilitated offender…no one in the Crown office wants warehouse people.” Judge Gouge agreed and held off sentencing until April 8, giving Harry time to seek treatment and counselling.

He did the same thing earlier for Cameron Harry, 24, who’s been drinking since age 12. Carving competition was never near collapse, organizers say KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Coun. Andy Adams said Samson was missing the point. “This is not an issue of whether or not the carvings are maintained, it’s a matter of where the funding comes from,” Adams said. “I think councillor Samson’s comments are out of order. I think we have clearly articulated that the maintenance of the carvings is important and valuable to this community, it’s just a matter of where the money’s coming from. The $5,000 is not the question, and the maintenance of the carvings is not the question.” In the end, a motion to take the $5,000 from the parks and recreation budget was defeated, with only councillors Samson and Ron Kerr voting in favour. This year’s carving competition, the 17th annual, is slated for June 26-30 at Frank James Park.

The Shoreline Arts Society says comments made at a recent council meeting that the Canada Day carving competition came close to collapse are not true. Coun. Larry Samson said at a council meeting March 19 that the society was in a precarious spot and needed council’s help. “The Shoreline Arts had gone through a dramatic, drastic changeover and I think it’s important that we show them support,” Samson said. “It was in danger of collapsing.” On Monday, Amanda Minaker, secretary of the Shoreline Arts Society, said Samson’s comments were taken out of context. “Never, at any time, has the chainsaw carving competition been close to collapse,” Minaker said. “It is true that all but two of the directors resigned at the Annual General Meeting held in September, but the reasons for the resignations did not pertain to the society’s operations. Their replacements were also established at the same meeting. Our board is a strong one, made up of retired and non-retired professional members of the community who volunteer their time.” The society has, however, gone through a bit of an upheaval in the past few years. In 2011, 10-year president Barb Bitner moved to Vancouver and had to step down. The year before, eight board members stepped down. The popular chainsaw carving competition, which promotes local and
regional wood carvers and helps attract tourists, survives on community donations and grants. Part of that is the city’s annual $5,000 grant-in-aid. This year the money will come from the c i t y ’s C o m m u n i t y Partnership Committee as it has in the past but the committee was recommending the money come from the city’s parks and recreation budget in future years. Several councillors said they could not support that, much to the dismay of Samson. “What message are we giving to the carvers, the artists that come here when we don’t even want to spend $5,000 a year to maintain the carvings that show up?” Samson asked. “So I think the $5,000 is the least we can do to show our support and to make sure that the Shoreline Arts Society continues to grow.”

Just don’t drive, judge tells logger with ‘unenviable’ record PAUL RUDAN CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
After five convictions for driving while prohibited, combined with longer and longer jail sentences, the judge had one piece of advice for Jason Verhaeghe. “Just don’t drive,” said Judge Ted Gouge. Verhaeghe is back behind bars after receiving a 105-day sentence on Monday in Campbell River provincial court. He appeared by video from cells in Victoria, where he’s
been since March 15, when he was arrested on a warrant in Campbell River. The longtime logger admitted to long-ago substance abuse troubles, but those days are past. Now, he’s working to support a daughter attending university, and to get to some jobs, he chose to drive. And that’s what has led to most of his problems. “He’s quite remorseful,” said Bobby Movassaghi, an article law student representing Verhaeghe on behalf
of a Victoria law firm. “It’s a somewhat unenviable driving record… the driving wasn’t reckless and he wasn’t impaired…” Verhae ghe’s first driving while prohibited offence occurred in 2007. A second, and more serious, offence took place in January 2009 when he was also charged with threatening and assault of a police officer. As part of his sent e n c e, Ve r h a e g h e received a three-year driving prohibition. He
was handed another one-year driving prohibitions and 90 days jail for this third conviction in 2011. Then in January 2012, he was caught behind the wheel again and then once more the following month. As a result, he was handed a 120-day jail sentence to be served on weekends at the Courtenay RCMP detachment. However, Verhaeghe was free on a recognizance on Aug. 23, 2012, when police checked out a vehicle parked at
the Quinsam Crossing Shell station in Campbell River. Turned out the plates were stolen and Verhaeghe was the driver. This time he wasn’t charged with driving while prohibited, but he was charged with driving an uninsured vehicle, possession of stolen property under $5,000 and breach of a recognizance. On Friday, Nov. 23, Verhaeghe said he was working when he should have been in a RCMP jail cell which led to a charge of being
unlawfully at large, and then he failed to show up for a trial confirmation hearing at the Campbell River courthouse on Jan. 7. A warrant was issued and on March 15 police went a residence on 7th Avenue in Campbell River. Verhaeghe answered the door, but provided false identification to the officers. When officers pressed him, Verhaeghe became confused about his age. Police then reported he let out an audible sigh
and said, “Let me get my jacket boys.” He’s been in custody since then. At Monday’s court appeara n c e , Ve r h a e g h e pleaded guilty to four charges. In exchange, the Crown dropped charges of possession of stolen property and driving an uninsured vehicle. In a joint submission to the judge, Verhaeghe will serve out the remainder of his intermittent sentence, 45 days, plus another 60 days behind bars.
Property owner can’t shrub off too-tall hedge KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
A tall hedge on a 9th Avenue property has caught the attention of city staff who say the shrub is a traffic hazard. City council last week slapped the property owner at 183 9th Ave. with a remedial action notice for violating the city’s public nuisance bylaw. Karl Read, the city’s bylaw officer, said the hedge is more than 2.5 metres in height and limits visibility for traffic at the intersection of 9th Avenue and Alder Street. “This property is a corner lot that has been identified as having a well-established hedge encroaching within the area described in the bylaw as required to be kept clear of visual
obstruction,” Read said in a report to council. “The purpose of this provision of the bylaw is to enhance safety for traffic at intersections. The property has been in breach for some time and while no imminent hazard is identified, there remains the need to lower the risk associated with obstructed visibility.” The city sent the home owner a letter on January 22 asking
the owner to trim the hedge but received no response. Council approved a remedial action notice last week which gives the owner 30 days to bring the hedge into compliance or else the city will do the work at the home owner’s expense. Any unpaid costs would be added on to the owner’s property tax account. This is not the first time the city has

Our View
City needs to co-operate more with local First Nations Just when you think things are going along okay, something happens to give you insight into what’s really going on. Such was the case at last week’s economic roundtable hosted by the Campbell River Chamber of Commerce that included outgoWe say: It was ing Liberal cabinet minister Pat Bell. The media were initially not allowed a surprising participate in the roundtable but revelation to hear to were given permission to sit in on it’s not the last half hour after we squawked. Our reporter was there long enough to deduce that Cape Mudge Chief Ralph Dick had expressed dismay over the poor relationship between local First Nations and the City of Campbell River.
Chief Dick elaborated on his points in a subsequent interview and Campbell River Indian Band Chief Bob Pollard corroborated Chief Dick’s opinion. Despite being major economic players in the Campbell River area, the two First Nations bands are not happy with the relationship with city hall. This is a perplexing situation. If the bands’ economic projects were conducted by a private non-Native enterprise, city officials would be falling all over themselves to accommodate them. As it stands, the bands are feeling left out. Meanwhile, the two local bands have been the most active economic developers in the last decade or more. The Discovery Harbour Mall, the Quinsam Crossing development, Walmart and Home Depot all have been
band projects. And Chief Dick also addressed a major misconception in the community, that being, First Nations people don’t pay taxes. The reality is, they pay plenty of taxes on commercial developments, the marina and through service agreements. What’s more, their enterprises pay taxes on the predominantly local goods and services they buy. So, a little respect is warranted and an atmosphere of cooperation is expected. The city should be working with the Cape Mudge and Campbell River First Nations to drive our economy forward. They have a right to expect the same kind of accommodation a speculator from Alberta received when he floated the idea of buying the Elk Falls Mill.

Plenty of evidence Filed for publication with the Mirror Dear. Prime Minister Stephen Harper, I have recently watched the film “Salmon Confidential” produced by Twyla Roscovich about wild salmon acquiring diseases from salmon farms on the B.C. coast. I also saw on Global TV news that they have successfully made a closed containment operation near Port McNeil on Vancouver Island. I support the courageous work of Alexandra Morton who has worked tirelessly to have the open nets removed from the wild salmon migration routes on the B.C. coast in order to save the wild stocks of salmon, but has run into roadblock after roadblock from the fish farm companies and from your government that appears to be in the aquaculture industry’s pocket. I believe there is plenty of scientific evidence proving the diseases to wild salmon exist as a result of open net salmon farms. Now that there is a closed containment model in operation – that could be expanded and would ensure saving our wild salmon from diseases that will ultimately spell their extinction – will your government move to close the open net farming operations or will you continue to block the way (Muzzling DFO scientists, refuting the clear evidence of disease in tests conducted by independent laboratories, denying the science and letting the wild salmon stocks disappear for good)? It’s a wonderful day for a walk in the neighbourhood
Alistair Taylor Out On A Limb @AlstrT editor@campbellrivermirror.com
Went for a walk last week around Willow Point. Willow Point is not that great a place to walk around until you get to the shoreline, then it’s spectacular. The neighbourhood is nothing special. Just practical streets and homes where people live. Architecturally, there’s nothing that’s going to win awards. The Cambridge Estates subdivision has nice enough homes and if you still consider Georgia Park as part of Willow Point, then you’ve got some fancy places there, particularly on the upland area as you approach Dogwood Street. But the rest of the neighbourhood is basically an older part of town with wide streets reminiscent of the seventies and eighties when they
built things like roads and housing lots bigger than newer subdivisions do today. As you walk along the sidewalks of Willow Point, you don’t take your eyes off the ground for too long lest you stumble on a concrete joint that’s heaved and buckled a little. That’s if you’re lucky to have a sidewalk. My street doesn’t until you get to the end where it used to terminate in a cul de sac. A few years ago it was pushed through to connect with a larger street, thus opening our quiet backstreet to traffic in a rush to compensate for the mistake they made turning onto this road. Although a little tired and showing its age, my part of Willow Point is still a nice place to live. I’ve been there for 20 years now
and we like our quiet street and our nice neighbours. The city is seeking input on the walkability of various neighbourhoods and Willow Point has great potential as a pedestrian-scaled neighbourhood. It already has a focal point: the shoreline. People are always walking to the Willow Point commercial district but most are probably going to the Seawalk. One of the great amenities my family has taken advantage of is the Willow Point reef. When our kids were little they loved to explore the reef and the rocky beaches of Willow Point. But to get there you have to negotiate the big obstacle of Willow Point: the Old Island Highway. It’s noisy, it’s busy, it’s a highway in the middle of
an otherwise walkable neighbourhood. Campbell River is a cityscape dominated by the automobile. Our subdivisions are designed to accommodate our commuter lifestyle. It was that way in the sixties and seventies when my home was first built and it’s still that way now. The idea of pedestrian scale communities is gaining traction but the city has yet to implement a plan that puts it into place. Increasing density is the mechanism for walkable neighbourhoods but most of us still want our singledetached housing unit. Until we give that up, we’ll continue to spread out. Police dog tracks down suspect driver Two men escaped serious injury after a suspected drunk driver plowed into their car early Saturday morning. The accident occurred on Harrogate Road near Erickson Road around 1:25 a.m. According to Campbell
River RCMP, the men in the black 2003 BMW were northbound when they were hit head-on by a brown 2011 Dodge pickup. Witnesses who called 911 also reported seeing the driver of the pickup flee on foot. Emerg ency crews
assisted a 38-yearold local man and a 40-year-old Calgary resident from the heavilydamaged vehicle. Both were taken to Campbell River Hospital and later released. In the meantime, officers and a police dog fol-
lowed a track which led to the Island Highway near Erickson Road. A 28-year-old Campbell River man was found and taken to hospital for treatment of facial lacerations. The investigation is continuing with police consider-
ing charging him with failing to remain at the scene of an accident, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, and impaired driving causing bodily harm. The man’s name was not released.

Residents worry over seniors home expansion KRISTEN DOUGLAS CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR
Several Nicholls Road residents turned up at public hearing last week out of concern that a proposed expansion to the Evergreen Seniors Home will alter their quiet, neighbourhood street. Two residents voiced complaints over traffic, parking and privacy. Kelly McCay said she’s worried the lot at
636 Nicholls Rd. will be turned into a parking lot. “Once Calvin (Headrick) purchased the property he started using it for staff parking, McCay said. “Our first concern is that once this rezoning application is approved, but before he is funded to start building his addition, he will have the right to use his property as a parking lot. With that, we ask that if this applica-
tion is approved, that a safety fence and privacy hedge be installed along the length of the property. Pat B a r b e r, wh o lives across the street from the property, said he worries about increased traffic. He said as it is, drivers have been using Nicholls as a way to avoid waiting for the traffic light at Evergreen and Dogwood. McCay said she’s aware there is a short-
age of parking available at the existing seniors home on Evergreen and she’s concerned staff will start using Nicholls Road for parking once the new building is in place. Owners Calvin and Cindy Headricks’ proposal is to rezone the lot on Nicholls Road to accommodate an expansion to the existing 38-unit complex at 635 Evergreen on the corner of Evergreen Road and Dogwood
Street. The Headricks want to expand the seniors home and build an additional 27 units in a separate, two-storey building on Nicholls Road. The Headricks have taken into account their neighbours’ concerns and said they plan to have covered staff parking on the Nicholls site and they will maintain Evergreen Road as the main entrance for all deliveries and visitors.

Answer: Diabetes affects many Canadians each year ~ it can lower your resistance to infection & can slow the healing process. The most common oral health problems associated Dr. Kevin Lathangue with diabetes are tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease which leads to tooth loss. When diabetes is not controlled properly, high sugar levels in saliva may help bacteria thrive. Plaque that is not removed can eventually harden (calcify) into calculus. When calculus collects above the gumline, it cannot be removed by brushing. This can create conditions that lead to chronic inammation and infection in the mouth. Periodontal disease often is linked to the control of diabetes. For example, patients with inadequate blood sugar control appear to develop periodontal disease more often and more severely, and they lose more teeth than do people who have good control of their diabetes. Brushing twice a day with uoride toothpaste, cleaning once a day between your teeth with oss and seeing your dentist regularly for an exam will help you to maintain your overall health. Krista’s gearing up for cystic fibrosis ride
Krista Houston (right) will cycle from Vancouver to Banff in honor of her friend Kim Wood who struggles with cystic fibrosis.
Riding a bike all the way from Vancouver to Banff – 1200 kilometres in nine days in the GearUp 4 CF (cystic fibrosis) is ambitious. You might wonder why anyone would undertake this challenge. Krista Houston, 30-year-old helicopter pilot for Grizzly Helicopters is determined to complete this ride. She is doing it to help her friend Kim Wood (Black) who has cystic fibrosis. “I watch Kim struggle everyday to breathe, to survive and I know the incredible courage and strength she has – I want to make a difference in her life and for all those children and young adults who have CF. I know I will have to dig deep to find the strength and stamina to complete the ride. It
is only for nine days Kim finds the strength to fight CF everyday!” Houston will be joining 21 other riders also participating in this great Cystic Fibrosis Canada fundraising event which begins June 22. Houston says, “I am counting on the support of friends, family and even strangers to help me raise as much money as possible so we can find a cure or better treatments for CF. I want nothing more than for my friend, Kim to have the same quality of life
that you and I enjoy. By raising funds for the GearUp I can help make this happen. By making a donation to my ride you can help too.” Cystic Fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults. There is no cure for CF. It causes a build up of thick mucus in the lungs leading to severe respiratory problems which can make breathing difficult. Meanwhile, mucus and protein build-up in the digestive tract results
in extreme difficulty digesting and absorbing adequate nutrients from food. The effects of cystic fibrosis are most devastating in the lungs. Ultimately most CF deaths are due to lung disease. Wood and others who have CF must endure hours of physiotherapy and inhaled medications daily to help clear the secretions from their lungs and keep a lid on chronic lung infections. Wood also has CF related diabetes and uses an insulin pump and strict dietary controls.

Campbell Riverites top-10 energy savers during Earth Hour
OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK
Campbell River was in the top ten B.C. communities saving power during Earth Hour 2013. British Columbians saved 136 megawatt hours of electricity and reduced the provincial electricity load by 1.95 per cent during Earth Hour Saturday night – the equivalent of turning off more than 10 million 12.5-

watt LED light bulbs. Many communities across the province successfully improved their Earth Hour energy savings from the previous year. Comox and Courtenay saw the highest reduction at 9.8 per cent. Campbell River was seventh at 8.1 per cent. Earth Hour is an annual global event hosted by the World
Wildlife Fund and supported by BC Hydro. T h i s ye a r m a rk s the sixth year of BC Hydro’s support of the event. The goal of Earth Hour is to encourage individuals to turn off unnecessary lights and electronics in an effort to conserve power and in doing so, demonstrate support for climate change reduction
efforts. This year, many BC Hydro account holders were able to track their electricity use by logging onto MyHydro – their online account – at www.bchydro.com/ myhydro. They were able to see the hourly breakdown for their account and compare Earth Hour electricity use with their use on the Sat-
urday prior to Earth Hour. Power Smart tips help British Columbians make a difference in energy conservation through simple ef forts year-round. Since 2007, BC Hydro’s Power Smart programs have saved close to 4,300 gigawatt hours per year of electricity – enough to power 390,000 B.C. homes.

nurse, to have a family and be able to travel and enjoy life like the rest of us,” said Houston. Wood says “I’m in awe of what Krista is doing for me – she is my support, my cheerleader, my laughter and my escape. She understands the daily struggles I have and does anything and everything she can to help me get through them. There aren’t many friends like her out there in the world.
I feel incredibly lucky to have such a thoughtful and caring friend.” Joining Houston for the first few days will be her husband Daryl Barnes. Also on the ride will be Michael Hamilton, 25, who has cystic fibrosis. Hamilton grew up in Campbell River and along with his father Neal, volunteers for Cystic Fibrosis Canada’s Campbell River Chapter. Houston is working hard to raise funds for
her ride. She will be having a giant garage sale, May 11. She welcomes donated items for the garage sale – call 250-923-7980. To help sponsor Houston or Hamilton, donations to Cystic Fibrosis Canada can be dropped off at Outdoor Addictions or online at www. cfvancouver.ca and follow the links for Gearup4CF 2013. Your support will help make a difference to those living with cystic fibrosis.

Celebrate National Wildlife Week at MARS’ annual Open House Spring is in the air, with flowers blooming, bees buzzing and birds singing. Mountainaire Avian Rescue Society (MARS) is inviting everyone to join us at our annual Open House on Sunday April 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the wildlife centre in Merville. Shakespeare the barred owl and Horus the red-tail Hhawk will be on hand for visitors to see up close. Brinley, the great horned owl, our newest MARS ambassador can be seen as well. This year there will be a big book sale and bake sale for all you book and food lovers and lots of activities for kids. This is also a perfect time to register to take a Walk for Wildlif ” on April 21 and observe the wildlife in the Comox Valley around the Courtenay Airpark. “We’re trying something new this year, with the book and bake sale and hoping that we can top last year’s attendance of over 300 people. time to come and meet the MARS team,” says manager and founder Maj Birch. Volunteers will be on hand with tours of the wildlife facility that is only open to the public during Open House each year. Their permits do not allow public viewing of patients and most of the cages
are off limits during busy times of the year. This is also a chance to learn about MARS’ other activities within the surrounding communities of Campbell River, Courtenay and the Comox Valley. Discover how MARS helps with conservation efforts and wildlife studies, their edu-
cational prog rams, internship program and more. They’ll have some other local environm e n t a l g ro u p s i n attendance to provide information about area conservation efforts and Wendy Kotilla’s Youth in Ecological Restoration (YER) Program participants will be helping with traffic control at the event. Look for MARS merchandise for sale, including chocolate eagles from Hot Chocolates and wildlife key chains and note cards. Refreshments will also be available for purchase. Attend their Open House and talk with staff and volunteers t o f i n d o u t m o re about wildlife issues, how you can become involved, and have a look at what’s happening at the MARS Wildlife Centre. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27, 2013 | CAMPBELL RIVER MIRROR |
British Columbians are increasingly losing money to text messaging-related scams. In 2012, more than $7,700 in losses were reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre from these kinds of schemes – a 600 per cent increase over the previous year. To mark March’s F r a u d P r eve n t i o n Month – a month-long, national initiative that helps Canadians reco gnize, prevent and report fraudulent activities – the Ministry of Justice, Consumer Protection BC and the Better Busi-
ness Bureau Mainland BC have teamed up to share important information with British Columbian consumers about texting and app scams. You might be at risk if... You click on text message links from unfamiliar sources. He brings seven years of experience as a college president to his new position and has a deep appreciation of the challenges facing colleges in rural communities. “He believes in a collaborative approach to leadership, fostering a climate and organization culture conducive to improvement, supporting employees as well as student learning, with a focus on developing trust and achieving desired results,” said Bruce Calder, chair of board of governors.
