Sign up for the Scotiabank MS Walk Lace up for someone you love and join the fight against multiple sclerosis at the Comox Valley Scotiabank MS Walk on Sunday, April 14th at 10 am. The MS Walk is the MS Society of Canada’s largest national fundraiser with more than 160 walks across Canada. The Comox Valley

I’ve recently been diagnosed with uncontrolled diabetes and my doctor suggested I see my dentist. Why? Answer: Diabetes affects many Canadians each year ~ it can lower your resistance to infection & can slow the healing process. The most common oral health problems associated with diabetes are tooth decay and periodontal (gum) disease which leads to tooth loss. Dr. Kevin Lathangue When diabetes is not controlled properly, high sugar levels in saliva may help bacteria thrive. Plaque that is not removed can eventually harden (calcify) into calculus. When calculus collects above the gumline, it cannot be removed by brushing. This can create conditions that lead to chronic inflammation and infection in the mouth. Periodontal disease often is linked to the control of diabetes. For example, patients with inadequate blood sugar control appear to develop periodontal disease more often and more severely, and they lose more teeth than do people who have good control of their diabetes. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning once a day between your teeth with floss and seeing your dentist regularly for an exam will help you to maintain your overall health.

What causes cancer and how to prevent colon cancer Part One March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month and April is Cancer Awareness Month so it is a good time to talk about what can cause and prevent cancer. This article will cover colon cancer and part two will cover breast, prostate and lung cancer. Colorectal cancer is the second biggest cancer killer in Canada for men and women combined. The first is lung cancer. Over 23,000 Canadian men and women will be diagnosed with colon cancer this year alone and over 9,000 people will die from it. In Quebec alone, 6,200 men and women will be diagnosed with the disease and 2,450 will die from it. In my practice I recommend everyone over the age of 50 to have a Fecal Occult Blood (FOB) test collected yearly. If your MD won’t order it for you we do it for $14. It is a simple home collection test that will detect blood in the stool that you cannot detect with the naked eye. If it is positive you may be asked to collect the test again or you

may get a referral to reactions. have a colonoscopy Cancer begins to rule out the growth with oxidative stress of benign polyps that on the DNA that is are easily removed not checked and runs and help prevent amuck. colon cancer from In a healthy cell the developing. “apoptosis program” Using the is a built in guidelines set off- switch for out for our bad cells that naturopathic causes the profession for cell to break the prevention up into little of cancer bits, turn its I use the membranes Dr. Ingrid book written inside out and Pincott by Dr. Neil the cell gets McKinney ND Naturally Healthy destroyed and Naturopathic recycled. The normal cell to cell communication is lost, the “apoptosis program” is blocked, they develop their own blood supply as they run out of oxygen, they develop their own lymph system to provide drainage of waste fluids, they make energy by fermenting sugars and generally drain the life energy out of the body. By the time a cancer cell has doubled 20 times it is one millimetre in diameter, too small to diagnose on screening tests. At this size they are using 30-40 times more energy than a healthy cell of the same type. In colo-rectal cancer the following suggestions are recommended for prevention and treatment: 1. A high fat, low fiber, high refined carbohydrate diet, alcohol, low intake of Vitamin C, folate, calcium selenium, flavones and indoles are all risk factors for developing colo-rectal cancer. Those with a history of Crohn’s and Ulcerative colitis have increased risk. 2. Restoring the off-switch “apoptosis program”.

This process is powered by the mitochondria or the energy producer of the cancer cells and can throw on the “apoptosis program switch”. Vitamin D, vitamin A, EPA, DHA, curcumin, garlic, quercitin, green tea, I3C, vitamin E, selenium and glutathione to name a few all aid apoptosis. 3. Interfering with angiogensis or the blood supply to cancer cells; Green tea, curcumin, vitamins A,C D, and E, soy isoflavones, milk thistle, quercitin, I3C, EPA and DHA. 4. Control invasion: MMP’s are enzymes which digest connective tissue and allow invasion of the cancer cell. Agents that inhibits MMP’s include: curcumin, green tea, quercitin, EPA essential fats, Vitamin A and Vitamin C to name a few.

5. Preventing metastasis of cancer cells: vitamin D, vitamin A, antiangiogenic agents used post surgery, control inflammation. 6. Controlling inflammation and production of IGF1 : make sure there is enough folic acid, B12 and B6 in the body to promote methylation detoxification pathways, proper probiotics in the gut to inhibit the growth of Bacterioides fragilis and Cyptosporidium parvum; Calcium, vitamin D, calcium D-glucarate, and low fat high fiber diet

prevents hyperplastic polyps from forming. Central obesity increases IGF1 an inflammatory marker as well as insulin. As you can see many of the natural therapies help numerous pathways at once to inhibit or treat cancer. This is why in most cancer patients there is a long term core program recommended. Dr. Ingrid Pincott, naturopathic physician, has been practicing since 1985 and can be reached at 250-286-3655 or www. DrPincott.com

Family meals make a difference March is Nutrition Month – a time to celebrate eating healthy foods. Brought to you by Dietitians of Canada and the 136 dietitians working for Vancouver Island Health, Nutrition Month 2013 is

dedicated to helping Canadians put their “best food forward” when choosing healthy food. There are dietitians working in more than 15 departments across Vancouver Island Health, ranging from acute care and

outpatient clinics, diabetes education centres and food services to Home and Community Care and Assisted Living. Included in this group are eleven dietitians working in Vancouver Island Health’s Child Youth and

well as kids and youth in schools. “Everyone should have access to safe, nutritious, local food along with the knowledge to prepare it,” says Swati Scott, community nutritionist with VIHA. “We know that eating healthy food plays an important role in staying healthy and our goal is to assist families in how to choose and prepare nutritious meals they can enjoy together.” Enjoying meals together has a greater impact than healthy eating - children and teens who eat meals with at least one parent most days are more likely to have better nutrition, better mental and physical health, less substance abuse and better school performance. Studies have found that they feel more connected to their family, experience less

depression and are less likely to be overweight or have an eating disorder. “Cooking with children is a great way of connecting and bonding, while having fun and creating memories,” says Scott. “After all, food brings families together; it connects us with our culture and inspires us to nourish our bodies and minds.” A popular community program that promotes eating together is “Dad’s Night Out” a free, drop-in program in Port Alberni. In January more than 60 dads and their children, aged three to nine, joined community nutritionist, Hélène Dufour to cook up their own pizza. Dads were able to make a meal with their kids, learn about the benefits of family meals and enjoy eating together. Rob

Gentlemen attended the event with his two kids, ages seven and ten. “I don’t want to sound like the stereotypical Dad, but I think it can be a real novelty for kids to see their Dad cooking and they love it,” said Gentlemen. “My kids had a great time and they were very creative with their pizzas, turning them into works of art using unique toppings like broccoli.” Family meals don’t have to mean a “home-cooked from scratch” dinner – they can happen at any meal. And you don’t have to sit down at a formal table; you can be perched in front of the breakfast bar. The important thing is to eat together, with conversation and without distractions. Celebrate Nutrition month by cooking a healthy meal with your friends and family.

Fishing 2X14 Corner with Don email:

Fishing conditions can change at any given moment due to unpredictable weather conditions. In the past week the wind and rain kept many Campbell River saltwater anglers on the shore. With the number of vehicles parked at various spots along the Salmon River conditions have been very good for the Steelheaders. Very few anglers have hit the Campbell River for trout because of high water flow. Signs have been posted warning po anglers and the an public about the high pu water wa levels. I spoke with Lorna Duncan at Roberts Du Lake La and the weather had its good wea Warning Sign moments and some people have been fishing. It is possible to fish off the dock and some catches have been reported in the evening, but at the moment fishing has been slow. Mark Dinney from Campbell River hooked into a 7 pound 2 ounce trout in 1995 at Roberts. Richard Glover from Sayward caught a 6 pound 2 ounce trout at Bear Lake in 1994. Riley Kominski who was fly fishing recently hooked into a 25 inch trout. His buddy caught another fish about 1 inch shorter. Freshwater fishing will be very good in local lakes that are easily accessible. Riley Kominski with 25”Tro You can fish ut from shore using worms and if you can get out in a small boat the areas of interest will be Maple and Echo. Popular fly patterns to use this time of year are Bead head and nymph patterns Fly tiers will be out creating their own favorite patterns, and sport shops in Campbell River and Courtenay will be stocking up on well known patterns. On any given day a fisherman using flies will lose anywhere from 6 to a dozen patterns.

Black Press With games like hide-and-seek and hopscotch becoming things of the past as children turn to video games and computers, one group has begun a tour to remind kids that it doesn’t have to have a plug to be fun.

Video games and smart phones may give kids’ thumbs a workout, but ParticipACTION wants to bring back unstructured play as a way of improving the all-around health of children. “Kids just aren’t

active enough these days,” said Zachary Nash, who is helping promote the program. “They don’t get a chance to develop that physical literacy.” The 2012 Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card found that 46 per cent of

Canadian kids get three hours a week or less of active play each week, including weekends. Unstructured play is seen as an important part of childhood development by many, and not only for physical health. Games

help kids develop problem-solving, decision-making and social skills and encourage creativity. This type of play has been in decline in recent decades, with distractions like television and games consoles occupying the free time of children. ParticipACTION, in partnership with the B.C. Ministry of Health and Healthy Families B.C., aims to reverse that trend with its Bring Back Play Funmobile by encouraging kids to get out and play. The Funmobile, a brightly-coloured truck laden with balls, hoops, chalk and the like, is coming to the North Island to promote old-fashioned games like Tag and California Kickball as part of its B.C.-wide tour. “Let’s bring back play and give kids the unstructured active time that used to be part of every childhood,” said Kelly Murumets, President and CEO of ParticipACTION. “Let’s offer them options besides computers and TV, and work with our neighbours to address safety concerns, so that our kids have the chance to run around freely, let loose and direct their own activities. They’ll be happier, healthier and stronger for it!” The Funmobile will be in Port McNeill at Sunset Elementary and Chesalakees Elementary on April 4, moving to Robinson Park after school. The team will visit Alert Bay Elementary the next day before going to Port Hardy’s Rec. Centre and Carrot Park on April 6. The Funmobile team will also introduce parents to the Bring Back Play app which lists games that parents may remember playing in their youth, and encourages them to share these games with their children.

Hearing loss affects more than your ears While many of us are aware of the frustration felt by those suffering from hearing loss, few really appreciate the seriousness of the problem. Recent studies have shown a link between hearing deterioration, stress and disease. And with one in 10 Canadians living with some degree of hearing loss, it’s an issue that can’t be ignored. Researchers at Johns Hopkins University, for example, recently found that individuals with untreated hearing loss have a higher risk

of dementia. For every significantly elevated 10 decibels of hearing rates of depression, loss, that risk increases anxiety and other 20 per cent. Even mild hearing loss takes energy, be it compensating with the other senses or constantly having to be focused and alert. Add to that the stress and depression that often accompany hearing loss due to feelings of isolation, confusion and anxiety, and it’s no wonder hearing loss can make us so vulnerable. If you suspect your hearing may be in decline, get tested. And if you already wear hearing aids, get them checked regularly to make sure you’re not elevating your risk of other

North Islanders’ access to services need attention In the past several months, the Immigrant Welcome Centre, based in Campbell River, has seen an increase in service delivery to members in the North Island communities. “Immigrants are driving for hours to get to the services they need to integrate in the area,”

said Rachel Blaney, Executive Director. “Our organization has a long history of serving immigrants in the North Island but in the past year we have seen a 20 per cent increase from the communities north of Campbell River.” Many of the immigrants

travel three hours to get inperson services. Because there was not any sustainable form of service delivery, the Immigrant Welcome Centre connected with their long term partner North Island Employment to create a linkage in their Port Hardy office.

Ranching the seas LOOKING The recent addition of several buildings and related hatchery infrastructure at Manatee Holdings’ Gartley Point Aquaculture Hatchery in Royston will help develop and implement an adaptive management plan. The plan is in development in consultation with the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), the provincial government, as well as marine researchers. According to Manatee Holdings company president Eric Gant, this season’s scallop and geoduck clam brood stock have been brought in and the two species have been successfully spawned. Once the animals reach sufficient size, they will be planted in regulated undersea land tenures around Savory, Texada, Cortes, and Marina islands. The company has employed this same aquaculture management practice for more than 15 years. While there are future plans to add other indigenous ocean species to the hatchery program — including sea urchins, cockles, sea cucumbers and horse clams — this expansion of the program is still subject to approval. Once underway, it will form part of an extensive marine animal research program in cooperation with UBC and Vancouver Island University. “Over the past 25 years, Manatee Holdings has helped to successfully develop the geoduck aquaculture industry in B.C., explains Gant. “Our efforts have been instrumental
