Princeton celebrates Earth Hour Lisa Carleton
lisa@similkameenspotlight.com
An Earth Hour party was held in Veterans Square on March 23. Hosted for the second year by the Princeton Exhibition Association (PXA) the party was a success, giving residents a chance to go out for some fun while conserving energy at home during Earth Hour. Kevin Chuley and Lydia Buhler manned the barbecued hot dogs provided by Cooper’s Foods. Princeton Home Hardware, The Source, Shoppers Drug Mart, Princeton Crisis Assistance and Everything Pets supplied prizes for the partygoers. A glow-in-the-dark parade with kids and adults dressed in brightly coloured clothing adorned with neon bracelets, fluorescent blinking headbands and reflective stickers marched through the square along to music provided by The Trubador, Mr. Allan Kovaltsenko. The children enjoyed an Easter candy hunt and those who entered the colouring contest each received a flashlight courtesy of Princeton Crisis Assistance. The PXA was given the opportunity to participate in the FortisBC Earth Hour Challenge for non-profit societies. The challenge was to get votes for an upgrade from residents when they made their Earth Hour pledge. Although the PXA did not win the contest, they are pleased with the excellent support they received from the community. According to a release from FortisBC, Participation in this year’s Earth Hour resulted in a 5.7 megawatt drop in electricity consumption, or the equivalent of switching off over 96,000 incandescent light bulbs. (60 Watt) Seventeen communities provided this drop in consumption—Princeton being one of them.

Good news for literacy in B.C. VANCOUVER - The B.C. government is providing Decoda Literacy Solutions with a $1 million grant to support the organization’s literacy outreach programs in communities throughout British Columbia. Education Minister Don McRae made the announcement on Monday at a Decoda conference in Vancouver on literacy and essential skills in the B.C. labour market. The $1 million in funding brings total grant funding to Decoda to $2.5 million from the Ministry of Education in 2012-13. This includes $500,000 provided in September for the Raise-A-Reader campaign. The funds will be used to further support 102

The services many of these groups provide include employment readiness programs and essential job skills training. Decoda Literacy Solutions is B.C.’s provincial literacy organization. In 2011, Literacy BC merged with the literacy department of 2010 Legacies Now to become Decoda Literacy Solutions. Decoda supports literacy and learning in communities throughout B.C.

Choosing fitness for life Lisa Carleton lisa@similkameenspotlight.com
Zumba® instructor Noelle Roccamatisi decided to take her love for fitness to a whole new level. She has just recently become the proud new owner of Vermilion Forks Fitness, located at 301 Bridge Street. This busy mom of three saw a great opportunity when the business came up for sale. “ I love it, so I just snapped it up,” she said with a huge smile. Roccamatisi is very excited about her new venture. Zumba® classes will continue 5 days per week; Monday to Friday from 7 - 8 p.m., and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:15 - 10:15 a.m.
Gym hours will run Monday to Friday 6 a.m. - 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., until the new cardlock system is installed, which will then extend the hours. Chantelle White has stayed on to assist Roccamatisi with her new business. White says she had “learned a ton” from working for the previous owner and that fitness has become a lifestyle for her. “I couldn’t have done this without her,” said Roccamatisi. The ladies welcome clients, both previous and new. Call 250-295-6099 for more information or pop by the gym at 301 Bridge Street. Look for Vermilion Forks Fitness on Facebook and watch for their new website coming soon.

Penticton hospital promise could be a hollow commitment Black Press Guest Editorial
It’s a little hard to take Premier Christy Clark seriously when she says the province is committed to building a new tower to upgrade the Penticton Regional Hospital. It’s also a bit hard to accept Mayor Dan Ashton — who will be the Penticton Liberal candidate when the writ is dropped next month — when he asserts that Clark’s announcement this week was not politically motivated. Health shouldn’t be about politics, Ashton said. On that, at least, it’s easy to agree with our potential MLA. However, when it comes to the PRH expansion, it’s pretty clear that politics plays a big part. The project has been “at the top of the list” for years. But political wrangling on the part of Kamloops and Vernon health proponents — a Vernon group even hired a political lobbyist — saw their projects jump to the head of the line. Now Clark says its Penticton’s turn, after public outcry and a “loud and proud” campaign on the part of Penticton doctors has given the B.C. Liberals a bit of a black eye. Clark has even found $2 million to put towards a business case to show the actual need for an expansion. It’s something of a hollow commitment, coming from a government that is by no means certain of re-election. And the need is obvious; PRH is more than half a century old, and suffers from chronic overcrowding as well as lack of facilities for increasingly modernized medical equipment. It’s too close to the election for Clark to make any sort of authentic commitment to PRH. The Penticton Medical Society has promised to continue keeping the need for the hospital expansion in the public eye until they see shovels in the ground. The rest of Penticton needs to do likewise, and support and encourage their efforts.

62nd Annual Family Fair on the horizon Plans are now underway for the 62 Annual Family Fair, which raises funds for bursaries for the Graduating Class of Princeton Secondary School. The first Family Fair was held in 1951, put on by the PTA to raise funds for equipment for the school. It has evolved to be an annual fundraiser for bursaries for each year’s graduating class at Princeton Secondary School. Community participation has been great in the past years and once again we are calling on the community for support with this annual event. While you are doing your spring cleaning you may find articles that you may wish to donate to the Fair. We appreciate all “garage sale” items (no used clothing please), toys, puzzles, plants, books, jewellery and handicrafts – preferably in good clean condition. Introduction of Liberal candidate for Boundary Similkameen riding I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the readers of the Similkameen Spotlight. I am the BC Liberal Party Candidate for the Provincial Election in May for the Boundary Similkameen riding. This riding is bounded by Penticton at the north and runs to the US border at the south, and includes Keremeos and Hedley to the west, and Grand Forks and Christina Lake to the east. I am currently a Town Councillor in Oliver and was the Mayor of Oliver from 1997 to 2005. I am the Chair of the Board of Community Futures Okanagan Similkameen and also Chair the Provincial CF Board representing 34 Community Futures offices around the Province. I am the past Vice-Chair of the BC Small Business Roundtable 20052011 and was on the Board of Directors of Junior Achievement BC from 2006 to 2011. My husband Larry and I [married 42 years] moved to Oliver in 1989 and bought the Eastside Grocery, then partnered in the Stedmans/V&S and finally owned Ruffled Edges until 2003. We have 3 daughters and 3 grandchildren—number four is due in April. Royal Canadian Legion News - George Pearkes Branch #56 - Princeton, B.C. FRoM tHE PRESiDENt
FRoM tHE LADiES AUxiLiARy
Here we are into the last part of the month of March and approaching the summer months and looking forward to our Saturdays having our BBQ’s out on our patio behind the Legion. As of a couple of weeks ago we started having a lunch menu on Saturday which consists of four different kinds of Sandwiches with soup or a hamburger along with potato salad for only $5.00. This luncheon is put on by Sharon Paterson with some help from other volunteers who are willing to give up their time and help the Legion raise funds so we can help out community organizations in Princeton that need our assistance. On March 16th we had a beautiful roast beef dinner for St. Patrick’s Day and it was sold out and everyone enjoyed the food and the social activity that went along with it. Easter is coming and I hope that you out there read the Bugler in The Spotlight as there is another nice meal coming up for that time of the year. Join us you will not be disappointed.
“Pat yourselves on the back,” President Charlene Longdo told Legion Ladies Auxiliary members at the March 12 meeting. She congratulated everyone on the success of the spaghetti dinner held February 23 to raise bursary funds. The Auxiliary has been asked when they will do another dinner. Members decided they will wait until September. Applications for the bursary must be received by May 15 for the 2013 graduation awards. Students wishing to apply will receive the informaeuchre Fridays tion at Princeton Secondary School. 1:00 p.m. The Legion Zone meetings went well. Princeton’s Branch 56 hosted the meetings. Auxiliary members helped prepare the luncheon for those attending the meetings. Eleanor Sinclair was presented with a long service pin. She has been a member for 35 years. Laurel Johnson applied for membership and will be initiated at the April meeting. Memorial Crib tournament Auxiliary members formed the committee that will cater the Fish and March 24, 2013 Game banquet on March 23, and arranged for a committee to make sandwiches for a birthday celebration booked for May. Members were advised about the Legion and Auxiliary convention to ~ Jim Turner be held in Whistler the last weekend in May, but none are attending due to the high cost, as commitments for other expenditures take priority. WAyS AND MEANS Another month is almost gone, and spring is just around the corner. Our The Legion has agreed to share the cost of a new cooler for the kitchen. The old cooler, if it is still operating, will be kept for extra cooling meat draws are still doing okay but we can always do better. Come in and join us on Saturdays at 2:30 p.m. We are having turkeys space as needed. The usual meeting dates for April and May have been changed. The April and hams on March 30th in celebration of Easter. meeting will be held April 16, and the following month the meeting will The Bingos on Wednesdays & Sundays at 2:30 are also a lot of fun. President Jim Turner along with Arnie Powell present be on May 7. winners Lorne and Maureen with the Guy Bruneau trophy. Following the meeting, members enjoyed the customary social hour. ~ Jean Bowles

One of the lambs at Happy Hollow Farms.
Frolicking with lambs Janis Wright Vermilion Forks Field Naturalists
It’s lambing season in the Similkameen and a large group of Vermilion Forks Field Naturalists were delighted to visit Happy Hollow Farm on Saturday, March 23, and interact with 50 plus lambs, as well as 60 plus ewes and rams. A few ewes are still awaiting delivery of their precious bundles, while one mother has triplets to care for. Club member Charles Weber and his wife Bev, owners of this lovely site on Highway 3, were kind enough to let us bottle-feed some of the lambs, and we fell in love with a little one called Teacup, who was comfortable with the 17 visitors, and completely relaxed with his ever-constant companion, the herding border collie. It was another sunny Saturday morning, and we were happy to watch the lambs frolic while Charles explained various features of the pure-bred Suffolk sheep. After our tour many of us lingered to eat our lunches outdoors and glory in the early spring air. The next field trip will be held on April 13, when Rika Ruebsaat will lead us on a section of the old Vancouver, Victoria & Eastern Railway bed, along the river near Hedley. Please confirm with Rika at 295-4006 and meet at Billy’s Restaurant at 9 a.m. The next meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 9, 7 p.m., at Riverside Centre, when we will feature Dr. Jason Jones who will speak on the miracle of migration.

Pulled Pork With Tangy Barbecue Sauce Serves 12 to 14 1 pork shoulder (Boston butt or pork butt), approximately 7 lbs. 2 tablespoons kosher salt 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin 11/2 teaspoons ground coriander 1 teaspoon chili powder 1 tablespoon hot smoked paprika 1 tablespoon onion powder 2 teaspoons garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard powder 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 3 cups apple cider vinegar, divided Clean the pork shoulder well and pat dry with paper towels. Mix all dry ingredients together and rub liberally all over the pork. Let the meat absorb the dry spices at room temperature for 3 to 4 hours. Prepare a smoker with pecan chips and bring the temperature up to 210 F. Place a water pan with 2 cups apple cider vinegar in the bottom of the smoker. Place the pork shoulder in the smoker and cook at a temperature between 200 and 210 F for 14 hours. The smoking chips will need to be replenished every few hours.
Each time the door is opened, baste the pork with the remaining apple cider vinegar to moisten. After 14 hours, remove the pork and use two forks to pull the meat apart. Serve with Tangy Barbecue Sauce. Tangy Barbecue Sauce - Makes roughly 4 cups 3 tablespoons canola oil 1 large sweet onion, chopped 1 jalapeno, seeded and diced 3 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup ketchup
CAPRICORN: Capricorn, it can be tempting to toss away your responsibilities and simply have fun. But then you will be so backed up it could take quite a while to dig out from under your to-do list. AQUARIUS: Aquarius, just when you need a bit of sunshine, a satisfying piece of good news arrives. Your spouse or partner plays a significant role in this positive development. PISCES: Pisces, a tangled web is forming around you, but with quick wit you will manage to steer clear of the melee. ARIES: Aries, a mountain of responsibility has put pressure on you. Although you cannot shy away from what has to be done, you can put a smile on your face when tackling your tasks. TAURUS: Taurus, something special will take place in the next few days and you will be on hand to experience all of it. Magical moments are to be made with a romantic partner. GEMINI: Gemini, you may want to think before you speak when a friend asks for advice. The truth might hurt, so it could be wise to keep quiet for the time being. CANCER: Cancer, a stroke of inspiration leads you on a creative journey. Things will calm down toward the end of the week when you have to focus on more tangible things. LEO: Leo, someone you know wants to step things up to another level, but you may not be ready to take that kind of plunge. Talk over your feelings in a kind way. VIRGO: Virgo, family has been on your mind lately, and you may feel it’s best to spend the majority of your free time at home rather than out. Make good use of your time. LIBRA: Libra, a chance encounter has you rethinking what you want to accomplish in the next few weeks. You are second-guessing all of your plans because of this surprise. SCORPIO: A decision you made could have long-term effects, Scorpio. You’ll probably find that you have to do some damage control this week to get things back on track. SAGITTARIUS: Sagittarius, all indications point to a monumental change in your life. Wait to see what occurs and put big decisions or vacations on hold. FOR ENTERTAINMENT ONLY
