Gloucester development regaining ‘lost ground’ By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star
New development at Gloucester Industrial Estates has been slow since the global economic meltdown of 2008. However, the 700-acre planned industrial community has recovered most of the tenancies that were lost and is starting to show signs of new development interest. “In the last three or four months there has been a clear pick-up of interest in new lots,” said spokesman Dave Gormley, the Vice President of Land Development at Beedie Development Group. “There were a lot of vacant spaces since 2008 but these have filled back in as a number of companies changed, and now there is more interest in the available lots.” Gloucester’s development is currently standing about 80 per cent, with about 75 to 80 acres remaining for new development. Prices range from about $700,000 to $800,000 per acre for a fully serviced lot. There are also 10 to 15 acres inside the Gloucester official community plan area that are owned by other parties. Gormley noted that Beedie is not involved in an application by another group which is seeking to expand industrial development on adjacent properties on the Abbotsford side of the municipal boundaries. Beedie has opened up new lands alongside 272 Street, north to 60 Avenue, and there are six new lots currently available there on a culde-sac. Benjamin Moore Paint became the first occu-
pant of a building in Gloucester in 1991 and the most recent new facility is the Mazda Canada Parts and Distribution Centre that opened in January 2012. The biggest company there is the EV Logistics distribution centre, which employs close to 700 workers at two major buildings. Gormley said Gloucester’s current employment figures are not known but there were about 3,000 jobs in an estimate several years ago. Projected employment at build-out is estimated at about 6,000. According to the Langley Township Economic Development department, Gloucester’s total building inventory is 6.6 million square feet, which is comparable to the Northwest Langley industrial park. Since the latter is fully developed, Gloucester will surpass it in size when Gloucester is fully developed. The Aldergrove, Carvolth, Willowbrook and other industrial areas in the Township are under 1 million square feet, each. Gloucester is a significant contributor to municipal taxes too. Township financial officer Hilary Tasaki says Gloucester contributes about $7 million in taxes annually to the Township, which is about eight per cent of the Township’s annual $91.7 million in tax revenues. “Gloucester and Campbell Heights are competing with each other right now, and it has been slower here than in Burnaby and New Westminster, but we hope to see one or two new starts at Gloucester this year,” said Gormley.

The face of true Canadian spirit at the 13th Peewee International Friendship Ice Hockey Tournament, hosted by Aldergrove, March 15-24. The tournament was won by the Japanese city of Hachinohe’s White Bear team, but all 400 participants of the dozen teams from six countries felt like winners. Hachinohe received major damage from the March 11, 2011 earthquake and tsunami but as key organizers of this tournament since its start the spirit of friendly international competition has helped give them the spirit for revival and rebuilding after this natural disaster. Langley RCMP is seeking the assistance of the public to identify a person of interest in a shoplifting investigation. On Friday, March 15 just after noon, police were called to the Aldergrove Liquor Store after a male stole three bottles of Bacardi Gold Rum by hiding them in his pants and jacket. The male left the store and fled eastbound on foot. He was last seen headed eastbound on
Fraser Highway. The male is described as approximately 45 years old with brown hair, 6’0” tall, wearing a blue checkered jacket and blue jeans. Police are asking the public to study the photograph. If you can assist police with this investigation, call Langley RCMP at 604532-3200. Should you need to remain anonymous, call CrimeStoppers: Video image of suspect 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Tab Buckner, Hilary McRoberts and Brian Thomasson point out new signs at Aldergrove Athletic Park which ask park users to keep pets, cigarettes and garbage out of the artificial turf fields. One would think it was blindingly obvious that pet owners should pick up their dog’s droppings in public park spaces used by children and athletes, but apparently this has been an ongoing problem in Aldergrove Athletic Park. Especially galling is that dog droppings are left inside the two synthetic turf fields. This is why Township manager of parks operations Tab Buckner has had new signs installed on the gates to the artificial turf fields that ask the public to pick up garbage and dispose of it in the bins provided, as well as keep dogs and cigarettes out of the fields. Aldergrove Soccer spokesperson Hilary McRoberts says it is unhealthy and unpleasant for players to slide into the droppings and asks people to help keep dogs out of the area, please. Disposable dog doo pickup bags are also provided at the park free of charge for those who walk their dogs in the other sports fields. In related news, Adergrove will be hosting the annual Barry Bauder Soccer Tournament, April 6-7, with 42 senior men’s and women’s teams competing at Aldergrove sports fields. KURT LANGMANN PHOTO
An Abbotsford man has created a new political party that bases some of its values on an ancient idea. Michael Halliday named his new entity the B.C. Rare bird gets artificial leg By VIKKI HOPES Aldergrove Star
In his more than 30 years as a veterinarian, Dr. Ken Macquisten of Abbotsford has seen just about everything. But he’s now dealing with a first in his career – the challenge of developing and fitting a permanent prosthetic leg for a large bird that required an amputation after a golf course injury. The sandhill crane’s leg was shattered by a flying golf ball on the Country Meadows Golf Course in Richmond at the beginning of March. Myles Lamont, a wildlife biologist and consultant based in Langley, was called by Richmond city staff to capture the injured bird about four days after the accident, following failed attempts by others. Lamont said sandhill cranes are rare in this part of Canada – they mainly live on the prairies – and this bird would have been the offspring of one of only four breeding pairs in the Lower Mainland. He was born on the golf course two or three years ago, and is accustomed to people, making him tamer than even some of the cranes that Lamont raises in captivity. Capturing the animal was easier than Lamont had anticipated. He lured the bird close to him with some grain in his hand,
grabbed him by the neck and wrapped his head in a Titleist golf bag to keep him calm. He then called Macquisten, whom he has worked with many times in the past, and brought the bird to the Whatcom Road Veterinary Hospital for assessment. Macquisten said the lower portion of the crane’s leg was “dangling” and, when it wasn’t healing as hoped, he had to amputate it. He then crafted a makeshift prosthetic so that the crane would be able to stand. In normal circumstances, a bird going through such circumstances would be euthanized. “You wouldn’t normally do this with a wild bird, but this one is so tame and so special,” Macquisten said, adding that its rarity is also a factor. The crane – who has yet to be named – was then taken to Elizabeth’s Wildlife Center in Abbotsford to convalesce. The first prosthetic has since been replaced with a more sturdy one, and Macquisten said the bird has adapted well to the artificial limb. “He hobbles along just great,” confirmed Elizabeth Melnick, who runs the wildlife centre. The challenge now is developing a permanent one that can withstand the elements, including the bird’s ability to walk over

There really isn’t a manual for this one,” Macquisten said. The goal is to release the crane back on the golf course. Lamont said the Canadian Wildlife Service and the Ministry of Environment, who must approve the release, have given a nine-month deadline for this to take place. Macquisten said he looks forward to that day – “as long as he (the bird) learns what the word ‘fore!’ means.”

Society pushes for park
Editor: To Langley Township Mayor and Council: We, the members of the Bertrand Creek Enhancement Society, would like to express our opposition to the sale of the eight properties in Glen Valley (north of 84 Ave bounded by 252 and 264 St) by the Township of Langley. We are community members of Aldergrove. We do not believe the lands have been adequately assessed for their ecological significance nor their social value in respect to the community or Langley at large. We would like to encourage the Mayor and Council to stall the sale of these lands until they can be properly valued and the possibility of setting all or most of them aside as park space is considered. As members of the Aldergrove community we understand the sale of these lands is intended to help fund the community centre we have been promised for the past twenty years. Funds for our community centre should have been collecting for more then twenty years, as well as DCC’s collected from the recent developments in Aldergrove. Losing precious park space in one area of the community to fund concrete buildings in another is a shame that should be worn by past councils for failing to be responsible with public monies, and will be worn by this council if they support this sale. We request that council reconsider the sale of these ecologically significant lands. Bertrand Creek Enhancement Society

VICTORIA – The B.C. election campaign that’s about to get underway will feature lots of talk about skills training. It will be everyone’s top priority, along with a dozen other top priorities. But since elections are no time to deal with serious issues, don’t expect much frank discussion about ways to redirect our increasingly soft, urban society toward useful work. Somebody might be offended. The B.C. Liberals see lots of skilled, technical jobs on the horizon, but they cut their skills training budget and many of their MLAs are also looking at a career change. The B.C. school system, like that of other provinces, still pushes kids to university programs that lead to coffeeserving jobs and the need for another round of training. This has been going on since the 1970s, and it’s not confined to B.C. The B.C. NDP apparently expects to coast to victory with the same empty rhetoric about “income inequality” and student debt that they’ve been using for years. Their only discernible intent is to return control over how many apprentices can be on a job site to industrial unions, which severely restrict it, squeezing out small business. This team’s ideas are mostly left over from the last industrial revolution. Fortunately there is a mid-
Ottawa takes lead on training
term federal government that has acted. Last week’s federal budget launches new programs that the next B.C. government will have to go along with. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government didn’t claw back post-secondary funds from B.C. and other inept provinces, as some had feared. What we got from Ottawa was social engineering, Conservative style. The centrepiece is the “Canada Job Grant,” a $5,000 grant to employers willing to match it and train an unemployed person. To qualify, the province has to match as well, for a total $15,000 commitment to one worker who will have a job to go to. Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay was one of the Conservatives out to promote the budget. She said when the Canada Job Grant is fully rolled out, it will fund training for 130,000 people a year. Some will be young people, but there will also be older workers whose skills need upgrading. “If they’re willing to look at the jobs that are available and understand that that’s their best shot at making a living and being able to support their own families some day, we want to be sure that the opportunities are there,” Findlay said. The difference is that it has
to be what an employer needs, not what the student might prefer. It’s a public-private partnership, as we have seen with modern public works. Findlay acknowledged that even with a big push on training, Canada will still need to import foreign workers. In B.C. we are bracing for an unprecedented resource boom, much of it in the B.C. Interior and north. That’s one reason for a $241 million increase over five years to the federal Income Assistance Program for aboriginal reserves. The new money is available only if the community leadership commits to a mandatory training component. They didn’t call it Idle No More, but that’s the gist of it. Of course, no worker or province or band council is required to participate. They have the option to leave the federal money on the table. But the NDP should note that the Canada Job Grant applies to union-run apprenticeship schools as well as those in community colleges and technical institutes. Saying no isn’t much of a choice. Whatever grand promises the B.C. Liberals and NDP have written into their yetto-be-released election platforms, they will need to find the money to participate. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca
Editor: I find it interesting that Mr. Dix and the NDP oppose balancing the budget and even went as far as to say and I quote: “well, we might get around to balancing the budget in four or five years”. So there is the deciding factor for me. A government in waiting that will continue to pile on debt for my kids to pay off or one that will do whatever it can to reach a balanced budget to ensure my kids have less debt, help ensure a triple A credit rating to reduce interest payments which will help lower taxes as a result. As much as I was toying and tinkering with the NDP, I have decided to vote for responsible government. Sandra Robinson, Maple Ridge
Guardianship a failure
Editor: The Adult Guardianship Act of British Columbia is a failure. My family has experienced directly how the Act, and its implementation by Health Authorities, fails to protect the most vulnerable of aging adults, those suffering from dementia. While major efforts are made to protect vulnerable children from predators, adults with dementia are left wide open to predation. Dementia, whether from Alzheimers or a stroke, leaves an adult in a very child-like condition, vulnerable to manipulation and abuse beyond their capacity to understand. A lawyer, after reviewing the Act, said: “You could drive a big truck through this Act with your eyes closed, and not hit anything.” I have been told that there is currently a review of the Act. I would urge anyone who has experienced or seen the failures of the Act (and Health Authorities) to protect vulnerable adults to contact Ralph Sultan, Minister of State for Seniors, at 250-356-0912. Do it for your mother. Michael Conway-Brown, Powell River
Try veggies for Easter
Editor: Easter and spring conjure up images of hope, renewal, rebirth, and growth. How about translating these images into life-giving practices by doing something new for Easter? Try foregoing carcasses which were once living animal beings who wanted to live, but after a miserable existence, were killed so that humans could eat their flesh in the celebratory practice of placing a dead animal on the Easter dinner table. What kind of conscience or critical thinking do we as humans possess when we blindly and unconsciously follow habits or traditions that impose violence by killing animals for unnecessary purposes? Instead, consider starting a new and positive life-giving tradition of your own by going pig-free, turkey-free, and animal-free for Easter and beyond. Try Tofurky roast or any plant-based nutritious food for the body. Would this not be more congruent with religious teachings of compassion? This would be true renewal, rebirth, and growth, and would also give hope to animals with whom we share the earth equally but which we often conveniently forget, neglect, and exploit. Clark sees bright future for B.C. By MONIQUE TAMMINGA Aldergrove Star
It was sunshine and standing ovations for B.C. Premier Christy Clark, who spoke to a large crowd at the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce’s Your Voice, Your Vote leadership series on Monday. Clark told the crowd of more than 160 that now is the time for B.C. to grow the economy to “something we’ve never seen before when we grow our exports and technology sectors.” She is focused on the potential of Liquefied Natural Gas and increasing exports to China. “There hasn’t been a chance like this since W.A.C. Bennett’s time,” said Clark, referring to when B.C.’s longest-standing premier gambled on creating BC. Hydro, building hydro dams and using water power when little was known about whether it would be a success or not. The premier was the last of the three party leaders to speak in the series that also brought NDP leader Adrian Dix and Conservative leader John Cummins out to speak last week. The Chamber’s hope is to increase voter turnout in Langley by five per cent. Among the many who came out to Newland’s Golf and Country Club were several MLAs, including AldergroveFort Langley MLA Rich Coleman, Langley MLA Mary Polak and Surrey-Panorama MLA Stephanie Cadieux. Liberal hopefuls Peter Fassbender and Amrik Virk was also there, as well as several Langley municipal councillors. Clark’s message was to build an economy strong enough for future generations to enjoy a debt-free province.
MONIQUE TAMMINGA PHOTO
Premier Christy Clark spoke to a full house at the Langley Chamber of Commerce leadership series. “My son Hamish is 11 years old now. If we do things right, we can be debt free by the time he is 26,” said Clark. “Let’s aspire for our children.” She wants to see windfall revenues from gas exports going into a prosperity fund. Clark detailed the Liberal successes of creating “47,000 net new jobs” with the B.C. Jobs Plan. She credits the Liberals for digging the province out of a $4 billion deficit it was “saddled with” when they took office in 2001. She said B.C. was one of two provinces to table a balanced budget this year. But she reminded the crowd that voting Liberal means there are tough times ahead, where they are going to have to say no to a lot of things to keep B.C.
strong. “I was raised in a middle class family in Burnaby. My mom started the first non-profit daycare out of our church and my dad was a school counsellor. There was six of us in a three bedroom house . . . what was most important to my parents is that we were better off than they were and that meant saying no to a lot of things us kids wanted. It was hard at times but when my dad passed away he left the house mortgage free, he pre-paid his funeral expenses and left us debt free. “If it’s not OK to leave our children with mounds of debt, why would it be OK for government to leave children with mounds of debt?” she asks. She said she doesn’t want to grow government, only the economy.
“I believe in low taxes, building the private sector, more trade, smaller government, supporting small business and cutting red tape,” Clark said. Several written questions were taken from the audience, including on the “crisis” in transportation and transit funding and whether universal tolling is part of the answer. “I don’t support universal tolling and road pricing. I don’t think it works,” said Clark. “Bringing in taxes without consulting the public doesn’t work well so improvements have to be affordable,” she said. She doesn’t believe there is a “crisis,” but said she is confident issues with TransLink funding will get solved within a year. Health care was also a topic of concern. “Health care works well if you are really sick,” said Clark. “When you aren’t urgently sick is when it doesn’t work so well. There are wait lists and huge expenses for procedures. We need to wrestle with new ideas. We’ve been shy to have these conversations.” Despite its problems, B.C. has the best health outcomes in the country, she said. “Alberta has the most expensive health care with the worst health outcomes.” She said that she wouldn’t impose the business vote on local governments but recognizes that in some communities the imbalance of how much businesses pay for property taxes over residential is “way out of hand.” She plans on keeping the municipal auditor general around because it’s important for local governments to be held financially accountable.

Around Town: Aldergrove seniors’ news By MARIE GOLD Aldergrove Star
Spring is here! Isn’t it grand to see the sunshine and the flowers coming up again after the winter? We celebrated St. Patrick’s Day at the Fox & Hounds Pub, watching the Irish dancers and listening to the Irish singers while sipping green beer. On Monday, March 18 the general meeting was held at the Aldergrove Seniors and Veterans Club. We enjoyed a Chinesestyle lunch and card bingo was
played after the meal. The club is looking for new members and volunteers to sign up. The Social Network at the Kinsmen Community Centre also held their general meeting on March 18. A fire fighter was guest speaker on the subject of fire safety in the home. Locally, there is a new Itsy Bitsy Emporium with all kinds of treasures for your home. If interested go to Facebook.com and seek Itsy Bitsy Emporium. The usual events are happening at the OAP Hall. The
Art Club is on Wednesdays at 1 p.m. Bridge is played Friday at 7 p.m. Exercise classes happen Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. Square dancing is on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. The Seniors and Veterans have good meals Tuesdays to Fridays. Events include cribbage Tuesdays at 1 p.m., Mexican dominoes Thursdays at 1 p.m., and whist on Fridays at 1 p.m. We enjoyed the potluck dinner at the OAP Hall, Sunday, March 24 and played card bingo after dinner. It’s always interest-
ing to see the variety of dishes brought to the table. There will be a line dance party at the OAP Hall, Saturday, April 20 from 1 to 4 p.m. Also coming up at the Aldergrove Legion is the flea market on April 20 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Here’s a thought: a reporter was interviewing a 104 year old woman and asked, “What do you think is the best thing about 104?” She answered, “No peer pressure.” Happy Easter to all!
Valley United Way presents Spirit Award to ANS Aldergrove Star
The United Way of the Fraser Valley presented its annual Spirit Awards March 14 at Garden Park Tower in Abbotsford. The awards recognize the organization’s top supporters in several categories. The annual workplace fundraising campaign, which runs from September to December, collected almost $756,000 toward the
$875,000 goal. The awards dinner was emceed by Mayor Bruce Banman and featured a 1970s disco theme. During the event, it was announced that current co-chair Bruce Howell, CEO and president of Prospera Credit Union, will return to the position for a second year. “I used to think the United Way was just a funding conduit,”
Howell said. “It’s not. On getting involved I learned it is a whole lot more than that. The time invested directly by United Way staff in community building was a surprise for me.” He said one of the important things the UWFV does is to have conversations with local citizens, as well as with municipal government and community organizations, to determine local priori-
ties and bring people together to work on them. Joining Howell as co-chair this year is Robin Marshall, senior premier relationship manager with HSBC Bank Canada in Abbotsford. Recipients of the Spirit Awards included Member Agency of the Year, Aldergrove Neighbourhood Services Society.

Local duo race for mission Aldergrove Star
The second place trophy for the UTV Unlimited Class in the Baja 250 Desert Race was won on March 9 by two Fraser Valley residents, Art Penner of Abbotsford and David Neuber of Langley. The duo formed the team ‘Cielo Sent 4 U’ (Cielo means heaven in Spanish). David, the driver and Art, co-driver, decided to enter the race after attending the Baja 1000 race in 2011 while visiting and working at an orphanage south of Ensenada on the Baja Peninsula. They thought this would be a great way to raise some funds for the orphanage. The Mount of Olives Children’s Village opened their doors to accepting orphans and children at risk in 2007 and currently is home to over 20 thriving children. Mount of Olives has been able to do an amazing amount of work with very limited funds and facilities and has utilized

volunteer help from both Canada and the U.S., with the large majority of help coming from the Pacific Northwest. Team Cielo was racing in a stock Polaris 900 Razer XT. They completed this grueling 254 mile off-road race in 9:51:56. A maximum time allowance for the race is 12 hours. Their average speed was 26 mph, a testament to the roughness of the course. The overall race was entered by 250 vehicles, with only 171 completing the race. Top names in racing like Jesse James were unable to finish the course. The race and vehicle costs were privately funded and 100 per cent of the money raised for the race is going directly to Mount of Olives Children’s Village. Donations can be made through the secure paypal link on the Missions website at: www.missions-network.org (with the detail line Baja 250).

Soccer moms going for spring soccer Aldergrove Star
Langley United’s spring soccer program is taking another giant step forward by opening up a spring program for soccer moms to start in late April. Registration for the program has just opened but it’s already attracted more than 20 sign ups. It seems soccer moms are dying to move from the sidelines on to the field. “So many of us moms have watched our kids for years so
we decided to open a program for those moms who want to try it out for fun and fitness,” said Betty Boucas, president of Langley United, who notes that Langley United’s kids spring soccer is a hit as well. There are already more than 700 boys and girls signed up for spring soccer with four weeks still to go before it starts. “With 22 moms already signed up after just a few days, that definitely shows strong
interest. Soccer really is a family game.” The soccer moms program starts April 24 and goes once a week until early June and is designed to provide an introductory experience by Langley United’s professional staff coaches. Each night starts with warmup and a bit of technical skills training before small-sided and large-sided games. The emphasis is on fun. “Just like we do with the lit-
tle ones, the emphasis here for the moms is on having fun and growing to love the game,” adds Boucas, who expects a number of the club’s female board members and coordinators to join in as well. Information and registration for boys and girls spring soccer for ages U5 to U17 (April to June) and the spring soccer moms program is available at Langley United’s website at www. luysa.com

PUBLIC SAFETY A TRACK RECORD OF SUCCESS The crime drop in British Columbia over the last decade has been spectacular. In fact, whether you are looking at crime drops in Australia, New Zealand, any state in the US, or any province in Canada, none of these jurisdictions have been as successful at reducing crime as we have here in BC.

Have a Green Easter Celebration
Easter calls to mind colored eggs and baskets full of candy and toys. Many of the things used for Easter celebrations are not necessarily eco-friendly. But there are ways to embrace greener options to ensure Easter is a happy time for celebrants and the environment. Here’s how to get started.
Easter Baskets
Easter baskets overflowing with fake grass and plenty of treats are an eagerly anticipated component of Easter celebrations. However, many of the items found in a typical Easter basket -- or even the basket itself -- may be made of items that are damaging to the environment. Plastic easter eggs are made from plastics that may not be biodegradable. Furthermore, they may be made using chemicals that are damaging to the environment. Plastic
grass carries the same dangers. Once discarded, plastic grass also may pose risks to wildlife that can become tangled in the substance or inadvertently eat it and choke or experience intestinal blockage. Instead of pre-packaged Easter baskets, individuals can construct their own. Look for baskets made from reusable materials, such as wicker or other wood-based materials, steering away from plastic.
Aldergrove United Church

Easter Eggs
Coloring Easter eggs is a tradition. So are the coloring kits that may be made from chemical food dyes. Instead, look to natural foods to add a festive hue to the eggs. Cranberry juice or beet juice can turn eggs pink. Red cabbage leaves or mashed blueberries can dye eggs blue. And turmeric can give eggs a yellow tint. These all-natural dyes are safe for little fingers.

A language everyone speaks is sports Aldergrove Star
Regional team leaders from around the province and the Yukon recently came together in Langley to review preparations underway in Langley as the community prepares to host the 2013 Special Olympics BC Summer Games from July 11-14. The 2013 Games Organizing Committee hosted a Chef de Mission tour on March 9, bringing together the leaders of the nine regional teams that will be coming to compete in Langley and giving them a chance to check out the facilities and faces that will welcome their athletes and coaches. The Chefs de Mission and the GOC held an orientation session in the Langley Events Centre, including a five-hour venue tour and the opportunity to meet the Games directors and hear a briefing on the plans for the Games. Arne Olson, Chair of the 2013
Games Organizing Committee, said the Langley organizing committee is very well prepared. “It was great to meet the regional organizers, and they left impressed with the dedication and work that has gone into preparing the Games so far,” Olson said. The 2013 SOBC Summer Games will include competitions in 11 sports to be held at venues including the Langley Events Centre, McLeod Athletic Park, and Walnut Grove Recreation Centre. Over 1,100 athletes will be attending from all over B.C. and the Yukon. “I hope that everyone will be a fan and fill the stands,” said Matthew Williams, SOBC – Langley athlete. Williams, who is also a Special Olympics Global Messenger and a member of the SOBC Leadership Council, encourages Langley residents to take in the Games as spec-
tators. “I think that people who come and attend the Special Olympics Summer Games this year in Langley will go away with many great memories. I really hope that everyone comes out and watches these amazing athletes at the Summer Games!” Williams is hopeful to have people cheering in the stands as “it is a feeling that is always a great experience.” More than 1,000 volunteers will be needed to execute the Games and will share in the life-changing Special Olympics spirit of achievement, acceptance, sportsmanship, and joy. To get involved, contact Carol Madill in the Langley office at 604-533-2233 or email: games@ specialolympics.bc.ca. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday, except Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Kodiaks down 3-0 in PJHL Finals By KURT LANGMANN Aldergrove Star
The Aldergrove Kodiaks are in tough after losing the first three of the Pacific Junior Hockey League championship finals to the Richmond Sockeyes. The Kodiaks have to win all four of the remaining games in order to win, while the Sockeyes only need one more win to clinch the series. The Kodiaks have managed to narrow the game scores in their favour after the March 20 rout on
home ice that saw the Kodiaks lose 8-2. The Kodiaks lost 4-2 March 24 at Richmond’s minor Arena and lost 5-0 March 21 at the same venue. The fourth game is Tuesday, March 26 at Aldergrove Arena (after The Star’s press deadline, see website for update after the game). The Sockeyes dominated the March 21 game, scoring one goal in each of the first two periods and following it with three more in the third. Keeper Mark Menicucci was pulled at 50:31 after stopping 35 of 39 shots

and backup Cole McInnes stopped two of three shots. Sockeyes keeper Kootenay Alder was game first star for stopping all of the Kodiaks’ 29 shots. The Kodiaks were in better form on March 24, although the Sockeyes were up 4-0 halfway through the second period. Kodiak Spencer Mchaffie finally got the team on the scoreboard at 18:53 of the second, assisted by his brother Scott and defender Stefan Gonzales. Kodiak Adam Callegari scored the only goal of the third period at 1:03, assisted by Kenny Prato and Gonzales. Keeper McInnes stopped 28 of 32 shots and the Kodiaks were unable to score in the final minute with a man advantage after McInnes was pulled. The Kodiaks had 25 shots on goal that night, to the Sockeyes’ 32. SOCKEYES SLAP DOWN KODIAKS IN CHAMPIONSHIP OPENER The Aldergrove Kodiaks started out flat in their opening game against the Richmond Sockeyes, and paid for it with an 8-2 loss Wednesday at the Kodiaks home ice. The Sockeyes were up 2-0 at the start of the second period and scored another before Kodiak defenceman Stefan Gonzales snapped in his team’s first goal, unassisted, as 12:29. However, the Sockeyes then scored another three to put them up 6-1 at the start of the third. The Kodiaks rallied in the third and matched the Sockeyes for shots on goal, but only Kodiak Scott McHaffie was able to find the back of the

Twisters hosted their 18th annual Gymnastics Invitational this past weekend, March 21-24. It is one of the province’s premiere gymnastics events, and hosted about 650 competitive and recreational athletes from all over B.C. This event contributes to Abbotsford’s claim to be “Sport Town Canada” and confirmed the fact that our valley is home to many extremely talented local athletes who are on their way to competing nationally and internationally. It also constituted the third trials to Nationals for both the men’s and women’s competitive teams. Between the 52 Twisters athletes from the men’s and women’s competitive teams, the medal count came to 24 gold, 38 silver and 29 bronze. Kudos to the excellent Twisters coaches, who put so much energy and expertise into training the young athletes. The results are as follows for Langley and Aldergrove athletes: • Paula Melger-Ida (Level 2 Tyro): gold on JOHN MORROW PHOTO vault, silver on floor, bronze all-around; • Kaitlin Melger-Ida (Level 1 Tyro): 9th all- Dawson Friesen of Twisters Gymnastics Club competes on the pommel horse during the Twisters Invitational, around; held at the Ag-Rec Building. • Jacob Ames (Level 1): silver all-around.
