Hall needs new ‘legends’: Spencer WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News
T
he fire that razed the iconic Alberni Athletic Hall on Beaver Creek Road in 2009 is one of those events that, when you think of it, you can remember exactly where you were when it happened. Port Alberni Athletic Hall Society president Larry Spencer was driving into the city along Highway 4 on the morning of May 12, 2009 when he checked the messages on his cellphone and found 20 of them, all of which said the same thing. “Everyone said the hall was on fire and that it was burning down,” Spencer recalled. “I didn’t believe it until I saw it for myself.” A massive fire leveled the venerable hall at its former location on Beaver Creek Road. Twentythree firefighters from two different departments battled the blaze for more than six hours but the building, which was the epicentre of the community for half a century, was lost. The then board of directors vowed to rebuild and a massive effort was undertaken to accomplish that. A land swap with the city resulted in a new location. The society received more than $1 million in insurance money. And federal grants were found. A new hall was built and opened its doors in November 2010. Lost amid the excitement though were the generation

Director Scott Davidson is in his 40s and Spencer is in his late 50s—they are the youngest members of the executive, Spencer said. “We need some fresh faces soon before we start to burn out.” Two years after the fire, the new hall is a beehive of activity. The new facility has hosted science fairs, craft fairs, basketball tournaments and graduation ceremonies. Drop-in basketball is active, as are volleyball and

says he hopes to see a new director or two. Spencer’s mother, once a fixture at the hall and who helped in the community wherever it was needed, is now past the time in her life when she can do that. Athletic Hall stalwarts Denny Grisdale and Bill Andrews are both over age 75, and Jack Gilbert, who steps in and helps once in awhile, is over 80 years old. “These guys are real local legends, but some of them are having a hard time even getting around these days,” Spencer said. “We need some new legends.”

Andrews, 75, has been involved in the Athletic Hall since playing basketball there in his teens; he stayed involved afterward, he said. “It was a big thing in my life and as an adult I felt I owed something to it and gave back,” he said. Andrews coached youth basketball, did maintenance, worked bingos and bar nights, and he coordinated rentals for one year, he said. “And I was treasurer for more than 20 years.” Andrews stayed involved but said to do a good job you need to devote a lot of time to it, time that he wants to enjoy more of in
his retirement. Much of the Valley’s population is older and may feel the same way, Spencer said. “And people in general are just busier these days and don’t always have the time.” The society’s treasurer isn’t running again so there’s a slot open for someone who has some financial knowhow and is community minded. “And if someone wants to be president, well hey, you won’t get any argument from me,” Spencer said. Some ideas around attracting new society members include requiring user groups to appoint someone to be a member, Spencer said. “And we host a lot of First Nations events so I’d like to see that reflected on our board.” Local health professional Sandra Innes Gentleman uses the hall frequently with her children to play badminton, and has considered running for the board. “My background is in health and health promotion and the hall does promote healthy activities,” she said. “It would depend on the time commitment involved and the expectation, but being on the board is definitely something I’d think about.” Innes Gentleman sees how the hall draws people from other cities to Port Alberni for athletic events and says there are other possibilities too. “It’s a great facility with a lot of space so they could host a health fair there, for sure.”

The Tseshaht hope any pollution is minimal, but moreover “...we need assurances that the seafood from Barkley Sound is safe for our children to eat,” Braker said. According to VIHA, arsenic can be poisonous in small doses and fatal if consumed in larger amounts. Contamination can take place by something as simple as a child playing in contaminated soil, VIHA noted. Braker specifically pointed a finger at the province for allowing the situation to come to this, and called in a letter to BC Minister of Environment Terry Lake for the government to accept responsibility and conduct further testing. “The province allowed the mine company to dump the tailings and sand without adequate

Letters speaking against a new Port Alberni shelter facility on Eight Avenue keep pouring into the city even though the city apparently can’t stop the process. At city council on Monday, discussion about the issue came up after councillors received more letters for and against the shelter issue. “What power do we have over this? I don’t know what we can do as a city council,” Coun. Dan Washington said. The proposed shelter would be located on Eighth Avenue across the street from the existing one on a swath of land owned by the Vancouver Island Health Authority. The facility would
be developed in partnership with VIHA and BC Housing. City manager Ken Watson reminded council that the site is already properly zoned, therefore no public process is required. And city councillors already approved the plan shelter officials presented, so no formal approval by the city is required, Watson said. The city has done what it can, Mayor John Douglas said. “We’ve facilitated a meeting between the parties. And we still have the power to continue to receive comments,” Douglas said. The deal for the land isn’t cemented yet, Coun. Cindy Solda said. “I’ve talked to VIHA and they’re following this. They’re watching this,” she said.

Council mulls Veterans Way and Legion Street WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON/ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Port Alberni resident Harold Hamilton has proposed that the 4600 block of Victoria Quay and Johnston Road be renamed.
an you imagine turning at the corner of Legion Street and Veterans Way instead of at Johnston Road and Victoria Quay? Port Alberni resident Harold Hamilton can. He has proposed street name changes at the 4600 block of Victoria Quay and Johnston Road. The initiative would better identify Legion Branch No. 293, which is located at 4680 Victoria Quay, Hamilton said in a presentation to city council. The legion was established in 1938 and is one of the oldest active institutions in the city, Hamilton said. The location only has three mailing
addresses on it, and it only has one exit onto Burke Street, he said. There is precedence for the project. Qualicum has a Veterans Way and Memorial Drive, Hamilton said. The process to change the name of a street is straightforward, city manager Ken Watson said. The change has to be confirmed with the residents at the other two mailing addresses. And the move has to be compliant with the 911 emergency service. “Subject to these things it’s not expensive or onerous to change,” Watson said. Council directed staff to draw up a report regarding the process and its impacts.

Principles For Living by Dr. Carl Weber, BPE (Hon), DC You Are Only As Healthy As Your Spine Joseph Pilates, the founder of the exercise movement Pilates, realized this through those exact words. Mohandas Gandhi, the father of modern India and moral template for nonviolent protest, captured this truth by stating “As your spine gets rigid, so do your thoughts, your attitudes, your arteries, your organs…. and as you get rigid you can’t reach your full potential.” Yoga and martial arts training accentuate the suppleness and strength of the spine and pelvic corridor in an attempt to both protect and harness the subtle presence and power of your spine and nervous system. Pilates, Gandhi, the founders of Yoga and martial arts….hmmmm…..some pretty smart, groundbreaking folks. And what about the people that started the practice of meditation? What did they understand that now makes up the cornerstone of all reflective practice? They realized if the spine is not aligned properly, then attempting to meditate is largely a waste of time. Until your ear aligns over your shoulder, until your head is favourably in equilibrium with gravity, your spine is not balanced. If your spine is not balanced, your nervous system won’t let you be relaxed, won’t let you think clearly and won’t allow you to be clear enough to live your life effectively. What if we kept our spine healthy from an early age? What if, as a result, we could be clearer in our thinking and in our health? Would that be worthwhile? To me, a Chiropractor restores life to a human being through the nervous system by establishing and maintaining the complete integrity of the spine from birth to death, beginning with the upper neck. It’s your health, it’s your decision. Is your spine healthy? Is your nervous system clear? Have you tried Chiropractic care? Have you given it a fair chance? After all, you are only as healthy as your spine. Peace, Carl

Hall potential still untapped Ottawa takes lead on skills training Evidence that sports are a boon to Port Alberni’s economy cannot be disputed this week, as the AV Multiplex echoes with cheers from sold out crowds enjoying the Alberni Valley Bulldogs’ B.C. Hockey League playoffs, on the heels of a week-long provincial midget hockey championship that saw the host team win gold medals. In early April, the city will play host to a Goodwill Ambassador tour with a Russian hockey team, an event spawned in 2009 during the World Under17 Hockey Challenge staged here. And this summer, B.C. championship baseball will be played on our fields. Standing on the edge of all this early spring glory is a building that, while out of the limelight, is equally busy. The Alberni Athletic Hall operates literally in the shadow of the Multiplex, quietly hosting everything from dryland training for hockey teams to basketball and badminton tournaments, craft fairs to science fairs. However, the hall society’s directors are getting older—their average age is 75— and new blood is needed in order to keep this building operating to its full potential. It is time for the youth of the Alberni Valley to step in. Present Athletic Hall directors have carried you through two different halls—one destroyed by fire, one resurrected in a different location. They have ensured you had a place to compete, play, gather. Quite simply, and to use Larry Spencer’s words, the Athletic Hall is in need of some new legends. — Alberni Valley News

ICTORIA – The B.C. election campaign that’s about to get underway will feature lots of talk about skills training. It will be everyone’s top priority, along with a dozen other top priorities. But since elections are no time to deal with serious issues, don’t expect much frank discussion about ways to redirect our increasingly soft, urban society toward useful work. Somebody might be offended. The B.C. Liberals see lots of skilled, technical jobs on the horizon, but they cut their skills training budget and many of their MLAs are also looking at a career change. The B.C. school system, like that of other provinces, still pushes kids to university programs that lead to coffee-serving jobs and the need for another round of training.
This has been going on since the 1970s, and it’s not confined to B.C. The B.C. NDP apparently expects to coast to victory with the same empty rhetoric about “income inequality” and student debt that they’ve been using for years. Their only discernible intent is to return control over how many apprentices can be on a job site to industrial unions, which severely restrict it, squeezing out small business. This team’s ideas are mostly left over from the last industrial revolution. Fortunately there is a mid-term federal government that has acted. Last week’s federal budget launches new programs that the next B.C. government will have to go along with. Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government
didn’t claw back postsecondary funds from B.C. and other inept provinces, as some had feared. What we got from Ottawa was social engineering, Conservative style. The centrepiece is the “Canada Job Grant,” a $5,000 grant to employers willing to match it and train an unemployed person. To qualify, the province has to match as well, for a total $15,000 commitment to one worker who will have a job to go to. DeltaRichmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay was one of the Conservatives out to promote the budget. She said when the Canada Job Grant is fully rolled out, it will fund training for 130,000 people a year. Some will be young people, but there will also be older workers whose skills need upgrading. “If they’re willing to look at the jobs that are
‘...even with a big push on training, Canada will still need to import foreign workers.’

available and understand that that’s their best shot at making a living and being able to support their own families some day, we want to be sure that the opportunities are there,” Findlay said. The difference is that it has to be what an employer needs, not what the student might prefer. It’s a public-private partnership, as we have seen with modern public works. Findlay acknowledged that even with a big push on training, Canada will still need to import foreign workers. In B.C. we are bracing for an unprecedented resource boom, much of it in the B.C. Interior and north. That’s one reason for a $241 million increase over five years to the federal Income Assistance Program for aboriginal reserves. The new money is available only if the community leadership commits to a mandatory training component. They didn’t call it Idle No More, but that’s the gist of it. Continued / A9

isn’t much of a choice. Whatever grand promises the B.C. Liberals and NDP have written into their yet-to-bereleased election platforms, they will need to find the money to participate. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca
To the Editor, Re: Preparing for the after-oil era, Letters, Feb. 28. I am responding to a letter by Pamela Walden-Landry of Feb. 28. “We must wean ourselves off our carbon-based economy” is a mantra we should put on the back burner for a while. Like, about 100 years. At that time we might be a bit closer to depleting known resources and maybe have learned how to substitute oil. If carbon consumption is responsible for global warming, according to the fearmongers, the planet will be two degrees warmer by the time our known resources would be depleted at no additional cost to anybody. Scientists have known for some time that temperatures always increased during previous warm periods before amounts of CO2 became more abundant in the upper atmosphere. In other words: it is not CO2 which issues marching orders to our climate. Lord Christopher Monckton has a
standing invitation to debate this with any scientist of your choice on the Roy Green Show. The last person to be sure to find such a person and silence Monckton forever was Elizabeth May, the leader of Canada’s Green Party. That was about a year ago. The most typical response from those serving at the altar of ‘global warming’, is: “but Monckton is a ‘denier’, not a climate scientist!...” But, Ben West of the Canadian Wilderness Committee is? Elizabeth May is? David Suzuki is? Al Gore is? Ottawa Prof. Ian Clark is a climate scientist. He and others have studied the drill cores of Greenland and Antarctica ice which clearly show that, for whatever reason, warming happens, then the amount of CO2 increases in the atmosphere. Knowing this, should we still be as keen on making sure Alberta oil does not reach the coast? That we deny our grandchildren an unprecedented opportunity to participate in an economic boom? Now: sign me up to
ensure all reasonable safety standards are applied. Even a “global warming denier” does not like to see an oil spill. Ziggy Eckardt, Burnaby
Happy fair trade Easter To the Editor, We often contribute to the better wellbeing of other people in the world. This was true with fair trade coffee and is becoming more and more true with other fair trade consumer goods, such as chocolate. The purchase of fair trade certified products has important consequences. It allows many producers to receive reasonable prices for their products and numerous workers and little producers to climb out of poverty. It also has positive impacts on the environment. We believe that about 15,000 slave children work on farms and cocoa plantations in Ivory Coast, which supplies 35 per cent of the world’s cocoa. In Western Africa, there are 300,000 children under the age of 14 working on such plantations, doing
hard and dangerous labour. Overall, 14 billion workers live from cocoa plantations, several of them earning around $300US per year for their work and production. We should all work towards a world where solidarity is at the heart of economic development. A fair trade Easter would be an immense step in this direction. Bruno Marquis, Gatineau, QC
Questioning city’s tax rate To the Editor, Property tax increase stinks but will it be even more if the pulp mill’s welfare checks cease? If we hadn’t bucked a Liberal prison offer or city council’s BC Hydro generating station, didn’t get stuck with milliondollar paramedic bureaucracy and fund McLean Mill to the tune of $300,000 annually, would tax be less? Hindsight is 100 per cent accurate but can we learn from the past and prepare for lean years? If we need a museum director, can we award it to the lowest tender just like city, business and
homeowners do for roofs and bridges, etc? Could we cut costs by leveling the public with private sector in wages, benefits and working conditions when CUPE’s contract expires? If Raven’s 16-year project is only 15 per cent (or less) of the Island’s coal heyday, is it reasonable to assume that under present guidelines, it’ll cause 15 per cent of the environmental damage that Dunsmuir’s dynasty did? If we built bridges and roofs a thousand times the anticipated loads and exacted zero tolerance rat droppings in food, would costs be prohibitive? Can coal and shellfish farming coexist as they did when coal was king? Could pulp and sawmills have been built if they were subject to today’s green standards? Would we still be in the dark ages and would Echo Centre and the arena have been built? Will BC government be pressured by the shellfish lobby or license coal for the royalty and drop sales tax like Alberta did? RJ Frankow, Port Alberni

Holy Week Today we remember the ‘Last Supper’ that Jesus shared with his disciples, followed tomorrow by the remembrance of Jesus’ death. Sunday is the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection. Holy Week always seems to come at the time that Spring is producing its first flowers, and bushes and trees are beginning to produce buds, and leaves and blossoms… Both Easter and Spring remind us of ‘new life’. As a Church Community, our call is to pass through times of winter and darkness, and to share the news of God’s ‘spring’. It is good news! Please take time to reflect on the ‘new life’ offered through Jesus, and to share in services this weekend, at Trinity, or the church of your choice. Let us join together on April 8th to say, with great enthusiasm, Happy Easter!

Our writer: Valley Seniors is a monthly feature compiled by Orlando Delano and featuring residents living in Port Alberni seniors complexes.
Over 90 and loving it ORLANDO DELANO SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
The fifth annual “Over 90s Club” was successfully held at Heritage Place this month. Eleven residents, whose ages range from 90 to 97, gathered in the living and dining room area of their home to celebrate the event. Joining the nonagenarians were several residents of Abbeyfield who have also been part of the event year after year since its inception. This year’s event, put together by Heritage Place program coordinator Deb Walton, was opened with a welcome and introduction of the “special members” of the now well-known Over 90s Club. After the introductions, Walton read biographies of all the members and the comments they made on different topics related to their long life. In preparation for the event, honourees were asked various questions about their experiences and how they see the differences between the “old days” and present times. Among the

About 40 per cent of the residents of Heritage Place are now over 90 years old. “We hope to continue with this celebration every year,” adds Walton.

SD 70 should kick in Franklin Road residents for track repair - city still get fire coverage WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON Alberni Valley News
S
chool District 70 doesn’t have any extra money to contribute to the $700,000 resurfacing of the track at Bob Dailey Stadium, trustee Rosemarie Buchanan said. Buchanan was responding to discussion at Monday’s Port Alberni city council meeting, at which the subject was discussed. At the meeting, councillors voted to underwrite track repair with $700,000 from the land sale reserve fund. Parks and Recreation director Scott Kenny apprised council that the city’s application for a federal grant to help with the repair had failed. The condition
of the track is deteriorating and is a potential safety hazard, hence the need to act now, Kenny said. The track was installed more than 20 years ago. Surface repairs have been delayed due to budget restraint but the project can no longer wait, Kenny said. The elements and user wear and tear have taken their toll on the surface, Kenny said. Walkers use the track the most. Other users include the Alberni Valley Track and Field Club and School District 70. Bob Dailey Stadium’s track is located across the street from Alberni District Secondary School, and students use it often, Kenny said. Council voted to send a letter to the school district asking
‘...we don’t have any extra money laying around to contribute’ – Rosemarie Buchannan it to contribute to the repairs. The school board didn’t participate in any discussions about track repair, Coun. Cindy Solda said. “The Ministry of Education wouldn’t let them allocate money offsite,” she said. Trustees haven’t discussed the matter yet, Buchanan said. “But as we heard during the school closure public forums we don’t have any extra money laying around to contribute,” she said. Councillor Jack

McLeman asked Kenny if the city really needed a $500,000 track to just walk on, asking further about what if it wasn’t there at all. Even if you take the track out, people will still walk there, Kenny said. Proposing its removal would give rise to organizations speaking up against the idea, he added. “From seniors’ standpoints they would beg to differ and would be vocal about it being taken away.” If the city decides not to proceed then it runs the risk of litigation, Kenny said. “If it’s such a big offense and we can’t afford it then we should get rid of it,” McLeman responded. Doing the work now saves a headache later, Coun. Dan Washington said. “There’s no effect on the taxpayers, and the longer we wait the worse it’s going to get,” he said. reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

ranklin River Road residents will receive fire protection services in 2013 at 2012 prices. Port Alberni city councillors voted to maintain the 2012 fee for service level, and to explore options with the Alberni Clayoquot Regional District over the next 12 months. The city has a threeyear old agreement with Franklin Road residents that provides them with fire protection services. In exchange for the service the residents pay fees based on the assessed value of their homes, much like how city residents pay. The problem isn’t the service but rather the formula used to calculate it, Port Alberni Fire Chief Time Pley said. Several factors have combined to increase the fee over the maximum amount
Lily, a Grade 6 student, has been a carrier with the Alberni Valley News since November 2011. She delivers to 44 Port Alberni residents every Thursday. Lily enjoys everything about art at school. In her spare time Lily likes to read, especially science fiction. She is almost finished the first Hunger Games book. Lily is saving her delivery earnings for college or a car when she’s older. What Lily likes about being a carrier for the News is that she likes to be outside and enjoys the nice weather.

this is one of them,” he said. Business is business, Coun. Hira Chopra said. “At the end of the day it cost us this much to provide the service. Someone has to pay or the taxpayers will have to,” Chopra said. The city actually earned money because there have been no fires, so the fee is akin to a form of insurance, he added. If the city gives Franklin residents a break then it’s a slippery slope with other entities the city has such a contract with, like First Nations, Chopra said. “If we give them a break then others are going to want a break too,” he said. “We should stick to our principles.” Franklin homeowners have been caught off-guard and breathing room is needed to manoeuvre, ACRD Cherry Creek director Lucas Banton said. “If residents buy fire insurance then the premium they pay is less than the fee to the city,” Banton said. It’s an economic issue, Banton said, and residents have hit a threshold.

permitted under the ACRD’s bylaws. Those factors include: significantly increased assessed values of properties in the Franklin Road area; new construction in Franklin that has inflated values; low growth in the city; a freeze on industrial taxes; and a 100 per cent surcharge for lack of water supply to fight fires in Franklin, a report noted. Spiraling assessed property values in Franklin are having the biggest impact on the increasing fee, Pley said. Based on a one dollar per $1,000 assessed value of an average home, the fees have gone from $492 in 2011 to $587 in 2013. By comparison, fees for city residents have gone from $160 in 2011 to $185 in 2013. The city council motion freezes the Franklin fees at the 2012 value of $576. Delivering fire protection on a regional level remains a strategic goal of the city’s, and incremental progress has been made in this area, Pley said. “We’re on a path to regional fire service, but that path is going to have some curves in it and

Families put their best food forward ‘Food... connects us with our culture.’
VIHA: | March is Nutrition Month in Canada. A community program that promotes eating together has gained popularity in Port Alberni over the past few months. Dad’s Night Out is a free, drop-in program. In January more than 60 dads and their children, aged three to nine, joined community nutritionist Hélène Dufour to cook up their own pizza. Dads were able to make a meal with their kids, learn about the benefits of family meals and enjoy eating together. This is a theme that Dietitians of Canada are promoting during Nutrition Month in March. There are dietitians working in more than 15 departments across Vancouver Island Health Authority, ranging from acute care and outpatient clinics, diabetes

Fun By The Numbers Like puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mindbending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test! Here’s How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must ďŹ ll each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can ďŹ gure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Cross preps wrestlers for nationals WAWMEESH G. HAMILTON ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
New faces and a new technique will benefit Alberni Valley wrestlers who are trying out for the national championships, says former Olympic wrestler Travis Cross. More than 20 high school wrestlers attended the Nationals Preparation Camp held at Alberni District Secondary School during spring break. The wrestlers came from Port Alberni, Cowichan, and the Lower Mainland. The camp is for wrestlers who are headed to nationals tryouts. Working out with new partners benefits
wrestlers, Cross said. “When you practice against the same people all of the time you know each others’ styles and know what to expect,” he said. “Mixing it up prevents that kind of predictability.” New faces in a new place was also nice for wrestlers who came from Vancouver’s John Oliver High School, head coach Chris Fuoco said. John Oliver had access to a high level camp at SFU but came to Alberni instead. “The training is good, the competition level high and it was nice to get the kids out of the city for a bit,” Fuoco said. The goal of the camp was to refine wrestling technique and not introduce new

– Travis Cross ones, Cross said. “We’ll build on skills that are already there and get them to wrestle in situations they’ll see at the nationals.” Training took place every day, three times a day, Cross said. There was a morning run and outdoor fitness. A second late morning session involved wrestling technique.
And a third session in the evening involved technique plus matches. “The morning workout was something I learned when I was at a camp overseas. It wakes up your body and your mind,” Cross said. The wrestlers might have been doing something hard during what was supposed to be spring break, but this was something they wanted to do, Cross said. “That shows dedication. Those are the kids who are very coachable and I like that,” he said. “It makes you want to give your best so they can perform their best.” reporter@albernivalleynews.com Twitter.com/AlberniNews

The Bulldogs came back from the brink, something that didn’t surprise assistant coach Adam Hayduk. “People counted us out against Nanaimo and we came back,” Hayduk said. “The guys are just relentless and now we’ve set up Game 5
